“The way some Senior Communities Nickel-And-Dime you, they feel more like airlines.”

When you fly now, you know it’s extra for everything — that airfare only pretends to be low. But when a Senior Community offers luxury living for a seemingly-attractive monthly rent, you don’t expect to be Nickel-and-Dimed.

That’s why you’ll never see Nickel-and-Diming at The Palace. Here your monthly rent covers almost everything. Including all your meals, housekeeping, personal trainers, maintenance, and even Happy Hours with drinks and hors d’oeuvres.

You won’t see a long list of extra charges. At The Palace, the price is the price.

Remember when everything about flying was to make you feel special? That’s how living at The Palace feels today. Call or visit soon to see for yourself.

Hurricane Andrew’s Lasting Legacy

On a warm Sunday evening in the summer of 1992, homeowners across South Florida were preparing for a tropical storm in the usual ways. Hardware stores were selling out of plywood, neighbors were helping each other put up storm shutters, and, grocery stores were running out of toilet paper and bottled water. Many were anxious about the storm’s power and size. No one could have envisioned its lasting impact on the lives of so many people.

Hurricane Andrew made landfall just south of Miami at about 5:00 am on Monday, August 24, 1992. The Category 5 hurricane’s intensity and compact size focused its destructive power on a relatively small area, causing catastrophic damage. The storm directly resulted in 65 deaths and left many more injured. It caused more than $27 billion in damage, making it the costliest storm in Florida history. 25,000 homes were destroyed with more than 100,000 more suffering damage.

The hurricane also had a lasting impact on the insurance industry. Many insurers went bankrupt or pulled out of Florida, leading to reforms in how insurance is regulated and provided in hurricane-prone areas. 2022’s Hurricane Ian is having a similar impact on the already fragile Florida insurance market.

Andrew exposed significant weaknesses in building codes, disaster preparedness, and response strategies. In response, Florida significantly overhauled building codes and developed stricter construction standards.

Hurricane Andrew remains a pivotal event in the history of disaster management and preparedness in the United States. The lessons learned from the hurricane led to improved hurricane forecasting, better building practices, and a greater emphasis on emergency preparedness both in Florida and nationwide.

As we head into another hurricane season, remember Andrew and be prepared.

Mother’s Day

Mother's Day is a celebration honoring mothers and motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. The official Mother's Day holiday arose in the 1900s as a result of the efforts of Anna Jarvis. After her mother's death in 1905, Jarvis conceived Mother's Day as a way of honoring the sacrifices mothers made for their children. The first official Mother's Day celebration took place in 1908 at a Methodist church in Grafton, West Virginia, with a larger ceremony in Philadelphia. Through her efforts, President Woodrow Wilson officially designated the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day in 1914.

Memorial Day

This day is a federal holiday dedicated to honoring and mourning the military personnel who died in the line of duty. Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, was first observed on May 30, 1868. This day was designated to decorate the graves of American Civil War soldiers with flowers. The choice of May 30 was symbolic, intended to ensure that flowers across the country would be in bloom. The observance of Memorial Day was eventually set as the last Monday in May in 1971.

Hundreds of runners, spectators, and friends converged at the Amerant Bank Arena for a special event dedicated to celebrating the life of Aden Perry, raising funds for a noble cause, and engaging in healthy physical activity. This gathering was orchestrated by Sarah Perry, Aden's mother, who transformed her grief into a mission of community service following her son's tragic death.

Aden Perry passed away in high school while heroically attempting to save another teen from a car accident in a local lake. In the wake of this tragedy, Sarah Perry initiated a community program to provide lifesaving flotation devices near public lakes, continuing her son's legacy of helping others.

The event kicked off with a yoga and stretching class, setting a mindful tone for the 5K run that followed. Participants enjoyed a scenic route around the stadium grounds, energized by a live DJ. Post-run, the atmosphere was filled with joy as attendees indulged in barbecue from Mission BBQ and enjoyed beers while listening to the Beatles tribute band, The Beatlemaniax.

The event not only celebrated Aden's life and contributions but also successfully raised significant funds for the Aden Perry Foundation, ensuring that his spirit of community aid lives on. It was a day of fitness, fun, and remembrance, deeply resonating with all who took part.

Broward Schools Swears in Dr. Howard Hepburn Following Surprise Resignation of Peter Licata

Dr. Peter Licata shocked the Broward Schools community last month by announcing his retirement at a regularly schedule School Board meeting last month. He told the board that he regretted informing them that he was retiring.

"It is with great sadness that I write this letter informing you of my anticipated retirement on December 31, 2024. I communicated to the board on December 17, which is protected from the public record, regarding the status of a medical condition that I have been receiving treatments for. After conferring recently with my doctors, my wife, and my four adult children, it is best that I retire from this incredible role as an educator after 30-plus years here in South Florida," he said.

Licata continued, "I am certainly not being forced out, there is no question about that. I think by everyone's belief that they were surprised by this. This is something that happened over the weekend. Friday I spoke to one of my doctors and just indicated that you've got some choices to make. When I talked to my kids they were very happy. Having grandkids and not seeing them much

is not what it's about. I lost my father at 59, my grandfather at 62, and an older brother at 57. So, I'm 59 and I want to out live my dad and make sure to out live everybody else too," he said.

Licata gave the board almost eight months' notice so that they could search for his replacement. The board took less than a day. In an unprecedented move, they appointed Howard Hepburn, the district's Chief Academic Officer, as the new superintendent effective immediately. Hepburn is from Belle Glade in Palm Beach County and has been one of Licata's key lieutenants since joining the school system in July.

“I thank the School Board for their trust and support as I proudly serve the District in this new capacity,” said Hepburn, “As Superintendent, my focus remains on moving our District to an ‘A’ grade and ensuring all students receive a world-class education. We will continue to prioritize closing achievement gaps, increasing student access to accelerated courses and implementing strategies to support continuous student achievement.”

Dr. Hepburn holds a Bachelor of Science in

Science Education and a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from the University of Central Florida, and a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Florida Southern College.

Hurricane Guide

The Atlantic is bracing for an exceptionally active hurricane season this year, potentially setting records for the number of storms. In fact, forecasters from AccuWeather are concerned they might exhaust the list of storm names due to an anticipated surge in tropical activity. Last year saw 19 named storms, yet only four directly impacted the U.S. Among these, Hurricane Idalia stood out as the most significant, hitting Florida with Category 3 force in late August. Tropical Storm Harold brought heavy rains to southern Texas, while Tropical Storm Ophelia affected North Carolina. Lee, transitioning into a tropical rainstorm, brushed the New England coast before making landfall in Nova Scotia, Canada. Predictions for the current season suggest it could surpass the last, potentially making it one of the busiest on record.

"The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season is forecast to feature well above the historical average number of tropical storms, hurricanes, major hurricanes and direct U.S. impacts," AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Forecaster Alex DaSilva said.

Several key factors are contributing to the forecast of a highly active season. The abundance of warm ocean waters serves as a catalyst for the development

and strengthening of tropical storms. This condition facilitates more frequent storm formation and increases the likelihood of rapid intensification, a trend observed in some of the most devastating hurricanes in recent history. Additionally, the potential for late-season activity is heightened by the unusually warm waters extending into November.

"Sea-surface temperatures are well above historical average across much of the Atlantic basin, especially across the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean and the Main Development Region [for hurricanes]," DaSilva explained. The Atlantic water temperatures observed last month were around or even warmer than they were ahead of the blockbuster 2005 and 2020 hurricane seasons.

A significant influence on this year's hurricane outlook is linked to changes in the Pacific Ocean. The rapid shift from El Niño conditions, characterized by warmer-than-average sea temperatures, to La Niña, marked by cooler temperatures, is expected to have a profound impact on Atlantic hurricane activity. La Niña typically reduces wind shear over the Atlantic, favoring more active hurricane seasons. This pattern was observed during the notably busy seasons of 2020, 2021, and 2022, with the

2020 season tying the record for the most named storms.

“It can be helpful to visualize a stack of pancakes," DaSilva explained. When there is a high amount of wind shear, the top of a tropical system can be pushed and tilted away from its base, causing it to become lopsided. If a mature hurricane is in place, it may weaken but will not necessarily dissipate. "A tall, neat stack is what a tropical system wants to be, but wind shear can cause some pancakes to be displaced and the stack could fall over," said DaSilva.

AccuWeather's forecast for 2024 anticipates 20-25 named storms in the Atlantic, including 8-12 hurricanes, of which four to seven could be major hurricanes. This exceeds the 30-year average and suggests a significant increase in the risk of U.S. landfalls.

Meteorologists are using historical weather patterns, or analog years, to refine their forecasts. The 2016 season, featuring Hurricane Matthew's destructive path through Hispaniola, eastern Cuba, and near Florida's coast, serves as a reference for this year. Like 2016, the upcoming season is expected to occur under La Niña conditions, underscoring the heightened risk and the need for preparedness.

Living in South Florida, we know the sky can go from sunny to stormy in no time, especially during hurricane season. That's why it's important for every family or household to have a hurricane kit ready. Imagine a big storm hits, and you can't leave your house or find a store open. That's when your hurricane kit becomes a treasure chest!

Why You Need a Hurricane Kit

A hurricane kit is like your survival box during and after a storm. It has all the essentials to keep you and your family safe, healthy, and somewhat comfortable when the power goes out, or you're stuck at home. Hurricanes can knock out electricity, block roads, and even cause stores to close for days. With a kit, you're one step ahead, ready to tackle these challenges head-on.

Keeping Your Kit Ready

Once you have your hurricane kit packed, keep it in a place where you can grab it easily. Check your kit every few months to replace expired food and water and to make sure the batteries still work.

Final Thoughts

Having a hurricane kit ready isn’t just about being prepared; it’s about giving yourself peace of mind. In the chaos that a hurricane can bring, knowing you have a kit with essentials for your family can be a huge relief. Start building your kit today, and stay safe and prepared!

Creating a hurricane kit might seem like a big task, but it's easier than you think. Here's a checklist of items that are must-haves in your kit:

1. Water: This is the most important. Plan for at least one gallon per person per-day, for at least three days. This is for drinking and cleaning.

2. Food: Stock up on non-perishable food items that don’t need cooking. Think canned beans, vegetables, fruit, peanut butter, crackers, and energy bars. Enough for three days is a good start.

3. Battery-powered or hand-crank radio: Stay updated with the latest weather alerts and news. Don’t forget extra batteries!

4. Flashlights: The more, the merrier. Again, don’t forget extra batteries.

5. First aid kit: Include basic first-aid supplies to handle minor injuries at home.

6. Medications: Keep at least a week’s supply of any prescription medicines you or your family members take. Also include common over-the-counter medications like pain relievers and allergy meds.

7. Personal hygiene items: Think of soap, toothpaste, sanitary pads, and baby wipes. These can make life more comfortable when you can’t shower.

8. Copies of important documents: Keep copies of insurance policies, identification documents, and bank account records in a waterproof container.

9. Cash: ATMs might not work if the power is out, so have some cash on hand.

10. Emergency contact information: Write down phone numbers of family, friends, and local emergency services.

11. Pet supplies: Don’t forget about your furry friends! Include food, water, and any medications for your pets.

12. Blankets or sleeping bags: Stay warm and cozy if the air conditioning is out.

13. Batteries: Keep a couple of USB charging batteries handy to enable you to keep cell phones charged and functioning.

As hurricane season approaches, preparing to protect your home and loved ones is crucial, and this includes your pets. Pets are an integral part of many families, and ensuring their safety during a hurricane is as important as securing the safety of any family member. Below, we offer comprehensive tips and strategies to keep your pets safe before, during, and after a hurricane.

Before the Hurricane

Prepare a Pet Emergency Kit: Just as you would for any family member, prepare an emergency kit specifically for your pet. This should include:

• At least a three-day supply of water and food in airtight containers.

• Medications and medical records stored in a waterproof container.

• Collars with ID tags, a leash, and a harness.

• A pet carrier with bedding and toys to help reduce stress.

• Current photos of your pets in case they get lost.

• Litter box, litter, paper towels, plastic trash

bags, and household chlorine bleach for sanitation.

• Information on feeding schedules, medical conditions, and behavior tendencies in case you have to board your pets or place them in foster care.

Ensure Your Pet’s Identification is Up-toDate: Check that your pet’s tags are secure and legible. Consider microchipping your pet if not already done, as it can be a lifesaver in reuniting lost pets with their owners.

Know Your Shelter Options: Not all shelters accept pets, so it’s essential to plan ahead. Research pet-friendly hotels, motels, or boarding facilities both in and outside your immediate area. You can also check with your local animal shelter—they may have a foster program available during emergencies.

During the Hurricane

1. Bring Pets Indoors: Well before the storm hits, bring your pets inside where they can stay dry and safe. Create a comfortable area in a room without windows and remove

any toxic items that pets might accidentally consume.

2. Calm and Comfort Your Pet: Hurricanes can be frightening for pets. Your presence is comforting, so stay close and show calmness and reassurance through gentle petting and talking softly.

3. Maintain a Routine: As much as possible, stick to your pet's regular routine for feeding and bathroom breaks. If it’s not safe to go outside, prepare an indoor area where your pet can relieve themselves.

4. Securely Confine Pets: During the storm, place pets in a carrier or secure room to prevent escape or injury. This also makes it easier to evacuate quickly if the need arises.

By incorporating these measures into your hurricane preparedness plan, you can greatly reduce the stress on your pets and ensure their safety and comfort during a potentially chaotic time. Remember, planning ahead is the best way to protect all members of your family, including the four-legged ones.

Tabacon Cigars & Spirits, a refined venue in a relaxed setting, boasts a carefully curated collection of top-quality cigars and a diverse range of spirits. The Plantation Walk venue opened in March. Two other spots also had scheduled April ribbon-cuttings: Samsara Aesthetics & Wellness, with massage therapy, skincare, laser and energy procedures and injectables among the services provided. And Chewy, the national pet food company headquartered in Plantation, is opening its first Chewy Vet Care practice at Plantation Walk. The company states its goal is to “bring gold standard medical care” to pets in Plantation community.”

I issued my first-ever State of the City address, first to employees and then to the general public in April. Our permitting process has improved, with more accountability and some time-consuming and unnecessary steps being eliminated. We are partway through adding 14 pickleball courts across the city and we are undergoing a complete code rewrite. The addition of a stormwater manager will prepare us better in flooding situations and body-worn cameras for police are on the way. See my 30-minute address at Plantation.org.

More than 50 city employees competed in the Lexus Corporate Run March 20 in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The 5K walk/run, an evening event to give organizations a night to promote team spirit and wellness, drew about 4,300 participants. Councilmember Erik Anderson was the fastest of our group, with a time of just over 24 minutes.

Deputy Police Chief James Dourvetakis was lauded at the March 27 City Council meeting. He is retiring after 29.9 years of service. He said he’d have loved to do a rounded-up full 30 years but he entered the DROP retirement portal a while back and that committed him to a specific date. He wasn’t idle for long. He started as a School Resource Officer immediately, rotating among Plantation’s schools.

I provide information about twice a month and it can sent to your inbox. I want to lift the curtain off of local government and spell out exactly what we’re doing. I think that makes for a better city. I also recently added a “Mayor’s Minute” video and you can get that every Monday. The goal of that one-minute video is to give you an idea of what is coming up that week (only). If you’re like me, you especially lock in on your weekly plans on Monday.

Gathering for the Reading of a Will

In movies and television shows, there is often a dramatic scene where family members gather in a lawyer's office for the reading of the will, eagerly waiting to find out who gets what.

In reality, there is no gathering, and the process is more private. Some families may have realistic expectations about the terms of the will based on prior family conversations and will not be blindsided. Other families may find out the details of the will after it is filed with the probate court and may be angered, hurt, or bewildered when they learn what is in it (or not in it) for them.

The Truth About Writing a Will

People think that it is easy to write or change a will. Some movies or television shows imply that all you have to do is write something down and put it into an envelope for safekeeping. In the real world, a will that is not created properly may be considered invalid.

Immediate Access to your Inheritance

In movies and on television, beneficiaries often receive their inheritances immediately after the death of a loved one, allowing family members to access their newfound wealth right away.

The distribution of money and property according to a will is a legal process that involves probate, unless a trust controls the distribution of the inheritance. Probate is the court-supervised process of validating the will, paying off debts, and distributing money and property. This process can be lengthy, especially if there are disputes or complications. It could be months or even years before Junior buys his new fancy car.

Arguing Before a Judge

When the expectations of family and loved ones are shattered in a movie or television show, everyone immediately considers contesting the will. Movies often depict legal matters, including estate planning, as requiring an appearance before a judge; cases are argued in a courtroom and include cross-examinations and emotional accusations.

Some movies and television shows correctly explain that contesting a will does require proving the case in court and it may not always be easy, but it will be expensive!

Real-Life Probate and Trust Administration

Although television and movies are entertaining with their conflicts and cliffhangers, Real-life estate administration is less dramatic than Hollywood would have you believe. An experienced Estate Plan Attorney can help you craft a customized plan that addresses your goals and wishes and provides an uneventful administration at your death to ensure that your wishes are carried out without the TV drama!

How Martial Arts Transforms Women's Lives

Martial arts training offers a multitude of benefits, and it's an excellent pathway for women seeking a unique fitness journey. Here are several compelling reasons why women should consider martial arts:

Self-Defense Skills: Martial arts provide essential self-defense techniques that can be incredibly beneficial. Training in disciplines such as Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) equips you with the physical and mental skills to handle various situations where personal safety might be compromised.

Boost Confidence: Stepping onto the mat can significantly boost your self-confidence. The progress you see, the skills you acquire, and the challenges you overcome in training contribute to a stronger sense of self. This confidence transcends the academy, impacting other areas of your life.

Stress Reduction: Physical activity is known for reducing stress, and martial arts are no exception. The intense physical exertion

combined with mental focus required during training helps clear your mind, offering a form of moving meditation that can alleviate daily stress.

A Nurturing Environment: Unlike traditional gyms, martial arts academies often foster a community-oriented environment. Training alongside others who are respectful and supportive enhances the learning experience, making it more enjoyable and effective.

Community of Like-Minded Females: Many martial arts academies are seeing an increase in female participation. Joining a martial arts academy with an active female community can provide camaraderie and support, as you share goals and challenges with women who understand the unique aspects of being a female martial artist.

Real Fitness Results: Martial arts training is incredibly comprehensive, providing cardiovascular, strength, flexibility, and agility benefits. The physical demands of martial arts can transform your body, offering tangible fitness results that are hard to achieve through traditional workout routines.

When considering martial arts, it's important to find an academy that supports female practitioners. Look for a place that not only has other women training but also respects and promotes their growth in the sport. This can significantly enhance your training experience and ensure you get the most out of your martial arts journey.

In conclusion, martial arts offer a rich and varied training environment for women seeking to enhance their physical abilities, mental resilience, and overall well-being. Whether your goal is self-defense, fitness, or stress relief, the world of martial arts has something to offer. Step onto the mat and start your journey today; you might just find it's exactly what you've been looking for.

As the temperature rises, it’s essential to take extra precautions to ensure your furry friends stay cool and safe during the scorching summer months. Here are some tips to help you keep your pets comfortable and protected:

1. Hydration is Key: Make sure your pets have access to fresh, cold water at all times. Consider adding ice cubes to their water bowl to keep it cool throughout the day. You can also create frozen treats using pet-friendly ingredients like peanut butter or yogurt to provide a refreshing snack.

2. Beat the Heat with Playtime: Set up a kiddie pool or provide access to a hose for your pets to splash around in. However, always check the temperature of the water before allowing your pets to play, as water sitting in a hose under the sun can become scalding hot and cause burns.

3. Stay Cool Indoors: If possible, keep your pets indoors during the hottest parts of the day. Use fans or air conditioning to help lower the temperature inside your home and provide a comfortable environment for your furry companions.

4. Mosquito Prevention & Heartworm

Preventative: With summer comes pesky mosquitoes. Eliminate stagnant bodies of

water around your home, such as buckets, kiddie pools, and planters, to reduce breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Additionally, consider using pet-safe mosquito repellents to protect your pets from itchy bites and potential diseases.

Heartworm disease can be fatal if left untreated, so keeping your pets on heartworm prevention medication is essential, especially during the peak mosquito season. Consult your veterinarian for the most suitable heartworm prevention option for your pets and ensure they stay up-to-date with their medication regimen throughout the summer months. By combining mosquito prevention measures with heartworm protection, you can significantly reduce the risk of your pets contracting this potentially life-threatening disease.

5. Prepare for Thunderstorms: Afternoon thunderstorms are common during the summer months. Create a safe space indoors where your pets can retreat to during storms, and consider using calming products like thundershirts or pheromone diffusers to help ease their anxiety.

6. Sun Protection: Light-skinned pets are particularly susceptible to sunburn and skin damage. Provide plenty of shade in your

yard and consider using pet-safe sunscreen on exposed areas like noses and ears when your pets are outdoors.

7. Check the Ground Temperature: Before taking your pets for a walk, check the temperature of the ground. Asphalt and concrete can become extremely hot and cause burns to your pet's paw pads. Opt for walks during cooler hours of the day, such as early morning or late evening, to prevent heat-related injuries.

8. Never Leave Pets Unattended: Avoid leaving your pets outside unattended, especially brachycephalic breeds like Bulldogs and Pugs who are more prone to heatstroke. Always supervise outdoor playtime and provide plenty of shade and water.

9. Beware of Bufo Toads: During the rainy season, keep an eye out for Bufo toads, which are toxic to pets if ingested. If you live in an area where these toads are present, take precautions to prevent your pets from coming into contact with them.

By following these simple guidelines, you can ensure that your pets stay cool, comfortable, and safe all summer long. Remember, a little extra care goes a long way in keeping our furry companions happy and healthy in the heat.
