Varicose Veins? Might be More than Meets the Eye

Watchman , a new treatment to prevent stroke in people with atrial fibrillation (AFib) TM

A new alternative to blood thinners Atrial fibrillation, which is an irregular heartbeat, is among the leading causes of stroke in the United States.

The WatchmanTM procedure, a new treatment option approved by the FDA, can reduce the risk of stroke in people with atrial fibrillation (AFib).

The Watchman procedure takes about one hour, is performed through a catheter and requires only a local anesthetic. The Watchman device is used to close the left atrial appendage where 90 to 95 percent of the clots form in patients with non-valvular AFib. The risk of the procedure is low, and patients typically go home the morning after the procedure.

Watchman, a surgical procedure which includes the implantation of a device, is good news for the millions of people affected by AFib, whose stroke risk is four to five times higher compared to the general population. Robert J. Cubeddu, MD Treatment with Watchman might prevent approximately 750,000 annual hospitalizations due to strokes related to AFib.

Currently, Watchman is the only approved interventional treatment for closure of the left atrial appendage for stroke prevention. Aside from the reduction in stroke, the major advantage of the Watchman procedure is the ability of the patient to stop taking blood thinners permanently.

Preventing the disability associated with stroke is imperative, especially since strokes caused by AFib tend to be more severe than those that are attributed to other causes. Plus, with the increase in the population of aging boomers, the number of AFib-related stroke victims is expected to rise significantly.

According to Dr. Robert J. Cubeddu, Chairman of the Department of Cardiology at Cleveland Clinic Florida, AFib is very common among patients over 65 years of age, and is therefore prevalent in South Florida, a retirement hub. Most patients with AFib are currently taking blood thinners also known as anticoagulants.

“Blood thinners are required for a lifetime, and their use is often limited by their side-effects, and the need for regular bloodwork and strict adherence to medication protocols,” said Dr. Cubeddu.

“In addition to those side-effects, several studies have suggested that up to 40 percent of patients with AFib are poor candidates for the blood thinners due to a history of internal bleeding, a diagnosis of peptic ulcer or cancer, or even a risk for falls.” In other words, many people with AFib need new treatment options.

esides local newspapers, magazines, and television, most individuals these days rely on social media to fill them in with up-to-theminute happenings. Besides keeping up with friends, many are also posting on their Facebook pages when they are in need of a specific service or recommendation for the best pizza, hair stylist, and even a plumber.

BoardroomPR President and Founder Julie Talenfeld saw this need as a great opportunity to start a Facebook Group for the City of Plantation. She created the group less than two years ago based on her love for journalism and keeping people informed.

The unique page called Julie Talenfeld “Plantation Nation” already has nearly 9,000 members from Plantation and all around West Broward - including Weston, Davie, Cooper City and Fort Lauderdale. It has been growing by more than 25 members each day

bringing in over 1,000 virtual community members every 60 days.

Prior to launching her PR business, BoardroomPR in 1985, Talenfeld interned for CNN in the Washington, D.C. bureau where she worked on the assignment desk and for their nightly Crossfire show.

“As a child I would ride my bike chasing down police and fire rescue always wanting to know what was happening and reporting back to my neighborhood friends,” said Talenfeld.

Talenfeld reports on news, politics, issues and events that impact Plantation residents, and invites people to post stories effecting the community. “Plantation Nation” has also become a popular social media hangout where residents request recommendations for restaurants, doctors, dentists and other businesses in the West Broward area.

“News today is all about being hyper-local,” added Talenfeld. “I’m very happy to live, work, play and report on everything Plantation - from my great hometown.”

Known amongst her clients as the de facto ‘mayor’ of Plantation, Talenfeld was named by the South Florida Business Journal as among its Most Influential Business Women and BoardroomPR has been named to the paper’s Top 25 Corporate Giving and Top 25 Largest Women-Owned Businesses lists.

Family Matters – Jacaranda Lakes Family Day

T

he Jacaranda Lakes community enjoyed their annual Family Day early last month.

The anticipated event attracted hundreds of residents to celebrate the neighborhood they call home. The Plantation community, consisting of 1,150 homes, gathered for a fun-filled day of food, music, entertainment, and participation from the City of Plantation Police and Fire Department and various local businesses.

The free event, now in its third year, encourages everyone to come together and connect, make new friends, and form everlasting friendships similar to those neighborhoods in much earlier decades when everyone knew their neighbor.

This year’s event planners were Christie Pfingsten and Sharon Vogel, also chairs of Jacaranda Lakes’ Neighbors-for-Neighbors (N4N) committee. The committee, comprised of about 15 dedicated residents, strives to bring meaningful programs and community building events to Jacaranda Lakes.

“When I first moved to Jacaranda Lakes in 2014, our house was broken into. I was heartbroken and

just wanted to do something to help build a safer community. All my research and all my conversations with local authorities pointed to one thing: the more connected a neighborhood is, the more likely it is to deter crime,” expressed Sharon Vogel, founder and chair of N4N. “As neighbors, we need to connect with one another and look out for each other. That is the most powerful thing that we can do to build a stronger and safer community. Although that was the initial motivation for starting N4N, what has kept it going for nearly four years are the wonderful relationships we’ve built with each other and our mutual desire to make Jacaranda Lakes the best residential community in Plantation.”

Covenant Village Residents Take Flight!

F

our Covenant Village of Florida residents, ranging in ages from 79-93, took to the skies in early April from the Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport on Dream Flights in a 1942 Boeing Stearman. The flights are courtesy of Ageless Aviation Dreams Foundation (AADF), a non-profit organization founded

by Darryl Fisher in 2011 to honor U.S. military veterans living in long-term care facilities.

AADF is dedicated to “giving back to those who have given,” by providing a Dream Flight in a biplane, the same aircraft used to train military aviators in the 1940s. This is the third year Plantation’s premier retirement community has coordinated Dream Flights with AADF to honor military veterans living in Covenant Village of Florida.

Each participant took a 15-20-minute flight on a route that passed over Fort Lauderdale, soaring 1,000 feet above the heads of participants’ friends and family. These residents included Rev. Arthur (Art) Stejskal, 90, T-5, U.S. Army, WWII, 1947-1948, Ralph Dirksen, 85, PFC, U.S. Army, Korean War, 1954-1956, Richard (Dick) Wells, 93, 2nd Lieutenant, U.S. Army, WWII, 1943-1945, and Doris Tjong, 79.

Rev. Arthur Stejskal served at Fort Sheridan as a clerk typist and counselor in charge of enlisted men’s separation from the 5th Army headquarters. Always having a desire to fly a small plane, but never having had the opportunity due to work commitments following his own separation from military made this experience one he will never forget.

Ralph Dirksen, a Chaplain’s Assistant and a Good Conduct Medal recipient, was thrilled to participate in the Dream Flight along with Richard Wells, a Cadet Bombardier. German born Doris Tjong had been fascinated watching squadrons

of planes flying overhead as a child. While she’s flown commercial flights traveling, the desire to “fly in the sky like a bird” remains. She viewed the Dream Flight as “making a little girl’s dream come true”.

“When we land, every one of them has a smile on their face and a spring in their step,” said Darryl Fisher, Founder and President of AADF. “Something about that fresh air and the roar of the engine energizes them. It’s an honor to hear their stories and to share this experience with them.”

“Dream Flights are becoming a tradition we look forward to each year,” said Executive Director Doug Fennema. “More than 70 military veterans live at our community; AADF gives us another opportunity for us to say thank you and show appreciation for the sacrifices these men and women have made for our country.”

In addition to playing sports, their number one priority is for children to not only learn the skills necessary for sports, but also learn the skills necessary for life. Developing valued characteristics such as independence, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, leadership, teamwork are key components in their comprehensive programs.

N Zone Sports Greater Broward believes the overall experience each child receives is one of their top priorities. Their goal is to reshape the way youth leagues operate by having highly qualified, experienced, and passionate coaches and referees to teach their players.

The organization recently launched in the Greater Broward area to offer sports programs to children ages 3-14.

Besides youth sports weekend leagues, the dedicated staff also offers in-school and after-care sports programs with a specific focus on kids just having fun in Broward County.

Luis Campo, Area Director for N Zone Sports Greater Broward, took the time to tell us why being in the “Zone” is the ultimate sports experience.

What differentiates you from the competition? We are reshaping the way recreational youth sports operate. The truth of the matter is, many recreational leagues use volunteer parent coaches to coach your child.

Programmed for Success – VEX Robotics at Plantation Middle School

E

arlier this year, hundreds of students from all over Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) competed in two separate VEX Robotics Qualifying Tournaments. These ambitious middle and high school students competed in team matches using VEX Robotics that they designed, built, and programmed to complete specific challenges on the game field.

One of these competitions was held at Plantation Middle School where twenty-three student teams in grades 6-12 participated in action-packed non-stop tasks with their custom-built VEX robots. The event was an opportunity to showcase their skills operating and programming their mechanical creations.

The students also had to submit engineering design notebooks documenting their building and programming process. Students in grades 4 – 8 also researched and presented solutions to a real-world STEM-related problem.

As the world and technology both evolve with global challenges, there is a greater need for the younger generation to be prepared with knowledge and skills to understand and tackle these problems.

BCPS are promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) studies and opportunities

such as competitions like these. The study of robotics encompasses all four pillars of STEM education, as well as important life skills such as teamwork, communication, and projectbased organization.

Members of Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) Students, School and District Staff Members, and Representatives from the Robotics Education and Competition (REC) Foundation were in attendance to supervise, support, and judge the anticipated event. n 2012, a 7th grade Plantation student, Tiernan Ramer, started her own charity project “Tiernan’s Soles Shoe Drive”. Fast forward six years and the ambitious teen reached her goal of collecting 6,000 pairs of shoes.

These shoes are brought to “In Jacob’s Shoes”.

The local 501(c)(3) public charity, created in loving memory of Jacob S. Zweig, provides shoes, backpacks, school supplies and athletic gear to South Florida children in need.

During this time Tiernan won the “Mattel Top 5 Young Philanthropists” in the United States award.

As a result, “In Jacob’s Shoes” received a donation

of $1000 in her name. During her Sophomore year of high school, she was awarded the “Jacob S. Zweig Excellence in Service Award”, and in her Junior year the “Freedom’s Foundation National George Washington Award” for her continued efforts.

Tiernan is now graduating from South Plantation High School and will put her focus on college where she will study law, social work or education to continue serving those less fortunate. I Wanna Rock! – Rockfest Concerts Breathes Life into the Miramar Amphitheater with Multi-Year Concert Series

ockfest Concerts, the renowned promoter of the Rockfest 80s Music Festivals, has signed an exclusive agreement to promote events at the Miramar Amphitheater. Led by music veteran Roy Anthony, Rockfest Concerts has been putting on shows throughout South Florida for over a decade.

The group is best known for its retro 80s events featuring legendary rockers like Dokken, 38 Special and Joan Jett.

The new concert series, however, isn’t just for head bangers. In fact, the first three events will

feature Latin music and Hip-Hop. “We are so excited to tap into the diversity of South Florida,” said Anthony, “We want to put on shows for all types of people and music.”

All the events will be held at the Miramar Amphitheater at Miramar Regional Park. The venue, which has 3,000 covered seats and room for 2,000 more on the lawn, is a perfect fit for the types of events Rockfest envisions. Concertgoers will get the benefits they’ve come to expect at major venues, like VIP sections and multiple food and beverage options, while also enjoying a much more intimate concert experience.

The first two events planned are the Festival Cinco de Mayo on May 5th and the Godfather’s of Hip Hop on May 18th.

Festival Cinco de Mayo The First concert in the series will celebrate Mexican Independence Day with music from all over Latin America. The headliner is Mexican Grammynominated artist Paquita La Del Barrio. Known for giving it to “Macho” men in the crowd while belting out regional favorites, Barrio is a true entertainer.

Paquita will be joined by sexy Columbian salsa and tropical diva Carolina La O as well as special guest KerreKe.

The Godfathers of Hip-Hop The second event hosted by Rockfest will be The Godfathers of Hip Hop, featuring many of the names who put Hip-Hop on the map. Doug E. Fresh and Naughty by Nature top the line up of 80s and 90s superstars. The crowd is sure to get down to Doug E Fresh’s The Show or Naughty by Nature’s party anthems O.P.P and Hip-Hop Hooray. But, the real treat of the night will be the when Eric B. and Rakim unite for the first time in 20 years. T

he tragic events of the past few months have touched all of us deeply. Whether you were directly involved, know someone who was, or just felt a connection, these events have had an impact on all of us emotionally. The fact that they are so close to home only sensitizes us all the more.

While our hearts ache for those directly affected we must recognize that we are impacted as well. Even more than ourselves we need to think about our children.

With all the media coverage and all the social media activity regarding it is nearly impossible to shield, even your youngest children, from what’s unfolding around them.

So how do you deal with the stress, and how do you talk with your family? I am by no means a psychologist, but what we do know from our crisis intervention training is that not talking about it is the worst thing you can do.

Discussing the tragic events that have occurred with your family can provide a level of closure and resolution. While we may never truly understand how or why these things happen, and often feel helpless because of it, talking, airing, and in some cases even venting your thoughts and feelings allow us to process such situations better.

We all grieve during such tragic times. First, we can’t believe that it could happen here, then we get angry. We try to put some meaning to it all. Then in the end we are upset, and finally, at some level, come to terms with it.

In the face of such tragedies children often internalize the events around them and can often feel some form of guilt or anguish they cannot explain or understand. Allowing them to talk it out can ease their grief and help them begin to heal.

Now is a good time to share with your family. Encourage everyone to express their feelings. If someone begins to show signs of extreme stress like sleeplessness, poor appetite, or unexplained irritability, it may be time to seek some professional help.

According to their website counselors are trained to neutralize the situation, de-escalate the caller to ensure their safety, identify the callers most critical issues, provide emotional support, and involve outside interventions as needed.

Remember, up from the ashes usually rises a Phoenix. The children of Stoneman Douglas have shown amazing resolve in the face of tragedy most of us can barely imagine. If they can be strong enough to rally a nation, then we can be strong enough to help our families.

Sunrise Resident Shows that The Mission is Never Impossible

S

unrise resident Tim Clay knows no limits when it comes to serving his country and his community. The sound engineering student at Miami International University (MIU) of Art & Design previously served in the United States Navy for seven years and continues to passionately help others.

The ambitious student is president of the school’s Military Vet Club. Under Clay’s leadership, the club has partnered with the Miami Rescue Mission to assist the homeless in the community by organizing various service events on and off campus. The club creates “hope bags” with hygiene products for the needy, collects and sorts toys for children, prepares and delivers sandwiches for the hungry and recently made Easter baskets for families.

“We strive to continue our service by bringing together staff, students and family to strengthen our bond with local communities through service,” Clay said. “It’s extremely rewarding to know we are making an impact on the lives of those who need it most.”

Clay’s dedication to helping those in need has earned him Leadership Awards at MIU in 2016 and 2017, and also inspired many other students to get involved.

“As someone who is committed to his family, school and community, Clay inspires all of us to not just give back, but to connect with those in need to understand how we can make a real impact in someone else’s life,” said John Osborne, Dean of Student Affairs at MIU. “It’s an incredible honor to recognize Clay for his dedication to helping those less fortunate.”

Just last month, Clay was recognized for his tireless dedication and efforts to serving the Miami community during National Volunteer Month.

He was also selected for a fellowship with “Mission Continues”. The fellowship is awarded to post-9/11 veterans who are sent to various communities across the country to perform volunteer work, while developing their own professional and personal skills.

Since its founding in 2007, “Mission Continues” has awarded over 2,000 fellowships to veterans. MIU has served as the host site for Clay’s fellowship, where he has continued to serve those around him.

When he’s not volunteering, Tim can be found spending time with his two young children and his wife, who is currently an active duty YNC in the Navy.

Broward County Selects The Police Foundation to Review Actions Following Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Tragedy

O

ngoing concerns regarding the Broward Sheriff’s Office’s response to the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School have led The Broward County Commission to request a thorough review.

The county selected The Police Foundation to lead an independent review and to create an After-Action Report (AAR) on the February 14th shooting. The Police Foundation was tasked with identifying and reviewing all relevant information about the event. It will conduct interviews, as necessary, to complete an

assessment and provide the After Action Report to the County. The goal of the effort is to identify strengths, successes as well as opportunities for improvement.

The Police Foundation was created in 1970 and is the oldest nationally known independent, nonprofit, non-partisan, and non-membership driven organization dedicated to advancing policing through innovation and science. It recently conducted and concluded the After-Action Report into the police response to the Pulse Nightclub mass shooting in the City of Orlando and is now looking into the Fire Rescue response at the City’s request. The City of Orlando highly recommended the group.

The Police Foundation’s team will be comprised of subject matter experts in

the field of public safety response to critical incidents, psychology of school shooters, school safety, security and emergency preparedness. Most notably, the team will include the retired Police Chief best known for managing the aftermath of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

“Of the three companies submitting proposals, Ms. Henry and staff concluded the Police Foundation was the best choice to deliver a comprehensive, factbased and unbiased After-Action Report, conducted in a thorough and deliberate manner,” said Assistant County Administrator Alphonso Jefferson. “We expect the assessment to begin later this month and take between 3 to 6 months to complete, with interim reports issued throughout the process.”

Why the Need for a Hysterectomy?

E

ach year, up to 500,000 women in the United States have a hysterectomy. This means the surgical removal of the uterus, most times also the cervix and supporting tissue such as the fallopian tubes and ovaries. Once a woman has this procedure she will no longer be able to bear children and her menstrual cycles will cease. She will go into surgical menopause if both ovaries are removed.

Generally, most hysterectomies are not emergency operations, so a woman will have time to discuss with her doctor and have time to consider her options.

There are five broad diagnostic categories of indications for hysterectomy.

These include most commonly uterine fibroids, abnormal uterine bleeding, endometriosis, pelvic pain and pelvic organ prolapse. Malignant and premalignant reasons also account for reasons why a woman may have a hysterectomy. This includes cancer of the uterus known as endometrial cancer, uterine sarcomas, cancer of the cervix, cancer of the ovaries or fallopian tubes along with premalignant endometrial hyperplasia. Depending on the type and extent of the cancer, other treatment modalities may also be necessary including radiation, chemotherapy or hormonal treatment.

Depending on a patient’s health history, a hysterectomy can be done in several different ways. ▸▸ Abdominal hysterectomy – The doctor makes a cut, usually in the lower abdomen. ▸▸ Vaginal hysterectomy - This is done through a small cut in the vagina. ▸▸ Laparoscopic hysterectomy A laparoscope, an instrument with a thin, lighted tube and a small camera, is inserted through small cuts and the uterus is removed either from the abdomen or vagina depending where the cuts are made. ▸▸ Robotic – The doctor uses a robotic arm to do the surgery through a small cut.

However, there are alternative ways to treat health issues without having the major procedure. A doctor may first want to keep a close eye on the patient by watching and waiting to see if uterine fibroids shrink after menopause. The doctor may suggest Kegel exercises for a uterine prolapse or prescribe medication to help with endometriosis. Nonsurgical therapies are also available for heavy menstrual bleeding, including progesterone containing IUD’s or oral medication. Less invasive surgical procedures to treat symptomatic fibroids are uterine artery embolization or myomectomy. Less invasive surgical procedures for heavy menstrual bleeding include endometrial ablation.

For those that do need a hysterectomy, it’s typical for most women stay in the hospital for one to two days after the surgery. Some doctors may send their patients home on the same day depending on their procedure. Those that needed a hysterectomy done because of cancer stay longer.

Doctors like their patients to get up and get moving soon after the surgery. The foley catheter is typically removed the next morning after surgery. Recovery and resuming normal activities vary depending upon the type of surgery. Abdominal surgery can take from four to six weeks while vaginal, laparoscopic, or robotic surgery can take just three to four weeks to recover. It’s best to listen to your doctor’s recommendation.

The Fountains hosted another successful and fun “Celebrate Plantation’s Moonlit Movie and Business Expo”. “Ferdinand” showed on the large outdoor screen, “Sparky the Fire Dog” posed with Encore Dance Theatre dancers, Limitless Martial Arts & Fitness demonstrated their skills, and Plantation General Hospital and Westside Regional Medical Center hosted the children’s tent with games and crafts among so many other participants.
