Say Cheese for the #BestDayEver

Students in Ms. Jordanna Egan’s class were treated to what was called #BestDayEver. As they came into class expecting their usual surroundings, they were surprised to experience few changes and an exciting new day of learning. These eager second graders were all smiles when they discovered that their ambitious teacher transformed their classroom into an Italian Café, a pet shelter, and a hospital.
“I do room transformations 3-4 times a year,” explained Egan, Tropical Elementary Second Grade Team Leader. “It’s a teaching engagement strategy I learned at a conference called ‘Get Your Teach On’. Teachers transform their rooms into several different themes to spark student engagement. When we got back from the conference, we were able to create themed bins for teachers to use, which are amazing PTA sponsored.”
Ms. Egan likes to make learning as authentic as possible, so she became “Chef Cray” who entertained and taught with a silly accent. Two of Plantation’s small businesses did not hesitate to also authenticate as they stepped in and give these “Toucans” a day to remember. Pizzeria Magaddino set up a pizza-making station for an Italian adventure. Tom Magaddino taught the students how to make a Neapolitan pie and then treated them to delicious gelato and pizzelles for dessert. If that wasn’t sweet enough, Down Home Desserts brought some alphabet and pizza sugar cookies to help explain fractions.
Besides math being a significant lesson, reading engagement is always a must. Those who visited the pet shelter filled out an application to shop for a pet to adopt. To receive a successful adoption, the student must read to their pets. They then made a collar, received a blanket, a bag of books, and an adoption certificate.
“I love the hospital. I can teach so many standards with it. For instance, students practice math skills by learning about lung capacity and measuring real bones! They also do surgery on ‘words’ by turning them into contractions,” added Egan. “The kids love dressing up as surgeons and the background music is from a hospital soundtrack. It’s so much fun!”
Egan recently surprised her students on Valentine’s Day which is designated as a day of service and love. She placed black lights all around the room and added pops of neon colors.
“The kids really enjoy it. Their faces as they walk into the classroom are absolutely magical. It’s moments like these that make me so happy as a teacher. I know I’m making memories that’ll last forever and most importantly, I’m making learning fun,” exclaimed Egan.
