At The Palace, Sandy could be a stand-up comedian, a piano teacher, or a theater director. She decided to be all three.
“I’m too busy to get old,” says Sandy. She’s deep into maximizing her new life at The Palace and all the possibilities it offers. That’s typical among Palace residents, because our seniors — like everyone else — just want to enjoy life.
We are the best in the business at important things like health care and safe, comforting environments — and you will not see more beautiful residences. We never forget that offering real quality of life is just as important as quality of care.

Over 360 local newspapers have gone out of business since the pandemic began. According to Northwestern University’s journalism school, about two local news providers close their doors each week. Increases in the prices of paper and postage combined with a global recession in advertising spending have hit smaller publishers the most.
Our City has been impacted by these trends as well. We are, however, committed to continuing to bring the community the same local and school news we have had for years. We are restructuring and reinvigorating ourselves for a prosperous 2023.
We will publish our magazines in the Broward County cities we serve and continue to inform you about the latest goings-on in the community. Our focus, as always, will be on providing our readers with a valuable source of community news and offering advertisers an unparalleled way to reach local residents. Here is to a healthy, happy, and prosperous 2023!

Meet a Wellpath Healthcare Hero from Broward County
Tell us a little about yourself: Where you grew up, hobbies, school, talents, family, pets, etc. Help us get to know you a bit.
I was born and raised in Jamaica with my parents and my dog, Fluffy. I enjoyed dancing and playing tennis growing up and as I got older, traveling became my love. My profession of choice was pharmacy. I then decided to transition to mental health, focusing on the forensic population.
What has been your career path at Wellpath?
I began with Wellpath as a PRN Counselor and was promoted to my current position, Mental Health Coordinator, in June 2022.
What is your why? What gets you up every day to do this important work?
Our population is forgotten by society so my why is not only to advocate but also provide quality mental healthcare to our most
vulnerable. I love my job and every single day I am able to provide hope and care to those who feel hopeless.
What makes Wellpath different from other healthcare opportunities?
Wellpath demonstrates true collaboration between the medical and mental healthcare for our population. Our integration approach treats our patients as a whole and not only focus on one problem.
What would you say to someone considering a job here?
I can always say this job is fulfilling but it is more. At Wellpath we work hard together, laugh together and together we help our patient to overcome their challenges.
What is the best part about working where you do?
My colleagues and supportive management team.

Broward County Commuter Rail Approved
Broward County received official notice from the U. S. Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration (FTA) that the first phase of the long-awaited Broward Commuter Rail-South (BCR-South) has been approved to enter Project Development (PD) phase.
This official approval opens the door to possible federal funding via the Capital Investment Grant program of FTA and will allow all funds expended by Broward and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) from this point forward to count against local funding match requirements of a future grant. It also places the BCR-South project on the list published by the FTA of projects "in-line" for potential funding, most likely via a Small Starts grant, providing up to $150 million in federal funding for projects below a $400 million threshold (capital costs for BCR-South are presently estimated at $297 million).
"We are very pleased by this development and appreciate the support and cooperation of both the FTA, along with our partners from the Florida Department of Transportation, who have been instrumental in helping us reach this important milestone," said Broward County Mayor Lamar Fisher.
FDOT recently announced that it has programmed $74 million to be available to help support the local match requirements of the potential FTA grant, approximately 25% of the estimated capital cost. FDOT and the County signed a Memorandum of Understanding outlining collaborative efforts to develop this new public transit initiative in January 2021.
"With this news, we are one step closer to leveraging both state and federal funds for this important public transit initiative, bringing in outside resources to assist with covering a majority of the cost to build the new system and begin the transformation of our community," said Monica Cepero, County Administrator.
Broward County officials are coordinating closely with counterparts in Miami-Dade County, who in parallel are developing the southern-most extension of the commuter rail project. Their section is referred to as the "Northeast Corridor" within Miami-Dade's "Smart Mobility" master plan. Palm Beach County is also participating, as the counties work to define governance and operations approaches of the new system.

Central Park Elementary’s
Turkey Trot Fund Run
Central Park Elementary students continued a holiday tradition, and the Plantation school raised more than $40,000 in the process.
The students and teachers participated in their 3rd annual Thanksgiving Turkey Trot Fund Run, trotting around the back parking lot at the school dressed in festive gear. Josh Stern, the owner of Split Second Timing race company, provided a colorful finish line, similar to what bigger races deploy.
All grades, Kindergarten thru 5th grade, spent 30 minutes each circling the course as Plantation PTA members and volunteers handed out frozen ice pops, water, and cheered the students along while listening to DJ Dean play their favorite songs.
More than 700 students registered online for the fundraiser, creating pages to share via social media that then garnered donations to help the school's PTA. The PTA organizes countless events and programs throughout the year, as well as provides school equipment, books, supplies, and technology including laptops and much more to CPE.
This year, the top fund-raisers received prizes, including an Echo Show kids edition, 13,000 Robux and were eligible for a raffle for a family jet ski adventure. Central Park students weren’t the only ones who could receive prizes. The teachers with the highest daily donations were awarded prizes for the entire week. The Top 12 students received a special surprise this year. They were called out of class to spray Assistant Principal Jennifer Kinggard and new Principal Lori Turner with silly string.
The PTA has 50 active members and newly inducted President, Jennifer Simon is thrilled about how the event turned out and so grateful for all of the amazing families who donated. The amount raised can truly make a difference.
Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital sponsored the event for the second year in a row, with help also coming from various local companies like Coldwell Banker Realty, Fresh Market, Sign Gypsies, and Ft. Lauderdale Watersports. The PTA is already planning next year's event and cannot wait to Trot for Technology in 2023!

SOUTH PLANTATION TO GET NEW STATE-OF-THE ART MEDIA CENTER
South Plantation High School and Sawgrass Springs Middle School celebrated the start of new SMART construction projects at School Advisory Council (SAC) meetings. The SAC meetings were led by John Nigro, Deputy Program Director for the SMART Program, who informed community members about the status of SMART projects at their school. The meetings were attended by school staff, school advisory councils, SMART Program team members, district board members, students, and parents.
Exciting renovations are coming to South Plantation High School! The SAC meeting highlighted the beginning of construction on the school’s new media center, as well as other renovation projects underway such as STEM lab improvements, ADA restroom updates, building envelope improvements, and fire sprinkler upgrades. In attendance there was South Plantation HS principal Christine Henschel and City of Plantation council members.
Principal Henschel discussed how the new media center will be more student-centered with a college and career readiness room to help students plan for their future. Additionally, the media center will have a teacher planning room where teachers can collaborate and plan their curriculums. The principal also shared with attendees how she works hand in hand with the project manager and contractors to ensure that student learning isn’t impacted.

Meet a
Healthcare Hero from Broward County

Instead of learning facts and a sequence of information leading towards the greater concept, these students have strong conceptual skills and abstract reasoning and very poor concrete, sequential skills. By Andrea L. Jakob, Esq.
As a new year arrives, many people will resolve to finally complete an estate plan that they have had on the "backburner" for ages. But please don't rush to complete the forms you find online!
Many websites will offer customized do-it-yourself ("DIY") documents. While they may seem convenient, quick, and inexpensive, their use could result in hefty legal expenses for your family.
One of my favorite Authors, James Clear, writes in his book Atomic Habits that in order to succeed, you need to take small steps to arrive at your goal. The same is true for creating your Estate Plans.
Although web services may seem an easy alternative, many questions require personal assistance. Many families fail to complete their wills and other planning documents because they are stunned by the number of questions they have and the enormity of the task. Parents wait until their youngest child is almost 18 years old because "we couldn't agree on a guardian." Or folks wait because they believe it will be too much work. To avoid being overwhelmed, you should break down the approach into step-by-step processes with the help of a professional.
Please read on if your goal is to avoid Probate, protect your children, keep family harmony, and avoid extra taxes or costs when you pass.
What is a "Will"? Contrary to popular belief, a will does not dispose of your assets independently. Without designated beneficiaries for every asset or entity, such as a Revocable Living Trust to control distributions, the will must be probated.
I call it a "Dear Judge Letter!"
What is Probate? Probate is a court-supervised process for identifying and gathering a deceased person's assets, distributing them to beneficiaries, and paying their debts.
Why shouldn't I use an online company?
Many people believe that online programs will prepare a legally enforceable document, but quite often create the opposite effect.
1. You may not have properly followed the state law particulars in language and in the execution of the will, potentially invalidating it.
2. Your DIY document may contain irregularities or errors, potentially disinheriting loved ones or invalidating the will.
3. You may not have added potential tax exemptions or contingencies, leaving your family to pay more in estate tax.
4. You may have forgotten to add your personal items, or only included personal items.
5. You may have drafted a "Living Will" instead. A Living Will is the document that allows a hospital to remove life support without a court order or fear of liability.
This New Year, resolve to complete your estate plan. According to Author James Clear, by outlining a direct method of action and setting the day or time to do it, you simplify the task and follow through with it. So please put it on your calendar for January to get started on that estate plan. Hire an Estate Planning Attorney who can guide you through the process so you can rest easy knowing your plan will work; you'll be thankful you did.

ANKLE INJURIES IN YOUTH ATHLETES
By Dr. John Goodner
arents should encourage their children to participate in sports, not only for the cardiovascular benefits, but also to help develop attributes like self-discipline, teamwork and an appreciation for the importance of good health habits to carry throughout their lifetime. In children younger than ten, multi-sport participation is advised with a training emphasis on proper technique and coordination. It is commonly advised that sport specialization be delayed until the late teens; research shows that children who specialize too early are more likely to experience foot and ankle injuries.
In addition to proper fitting and supporting footwear, a dynamic warm-up specific to the sport being played is recommended for all ages in order to prevent injury. As the opposite of adults, children are more susceptible to growth plate injuries than injuries to tendons and ligaments. These growth plates typically do not finish closing until 15-18 in boys and 13-16 in girls. Many children suffer from torsional imbalances such as in-toe or out-toe, however, the majority of these children outgrow these
Pconditions without medical treatment; see a foot and ankle specialist if your child is consistently tripping during activity.
Ankle Sprains - Typically seen more often in older youth athletes, younger athletes tend to also have associated growth plate injuries with ankle sprains. Immediate treatment is critical to healing and prevention of longterm ankle instability. See a foot and ankle specialist, immediately, for better long-term prognosis. Physical therapy to restore balance and strength is often necessary after offloading the injured ankle.
Fractures - If a child is unable to put weight on the injured foot after injury, it is recommended to see a foot and ankle specialist for an X-ray to rule out a fracture. If not severe, rest and immobilization with a cast may likely be the treatment. More complicated injuries may require surgical correction for better long-term prognosis. Stress fractures are often seen in children whose total participation in sports activity is greater than 16 hours per week; it is recommended that a child’s total hours of organized sports per week should be less than or equal to the age in years.
Heel Pain - Also referred to as calcaneal apophysitis, it is an inflammation of the growth
plate in the heel usually caused by excessive usage, tight Achilles tendon, flat feet, poor fitting cleats or shoes, or blunt trauma. Commonly seen in sprinting sports, like soccer and baseball, because of the cleat patterns and also in basketball because of the force from coming down after a rebound. Usual treatment includes rest, immobilization, ice, heel lifts, orthotics, stretching and physical therapy.
Shin Splints – This is a very common overuse injury. The presence of a tight Achilles tendon can cause overuse and inflammation of the weaker dorsiflexion muscles in the front of the leg. In children with flatfeet and a tight Achilles, overuse of a muscle in the back inside of the leg can become inflamed as well. Treatment includes rest, ice, compression, physical therapy, stretching, strengthening exercises, and orthotics.

HAPPY 2023!
By Nick Sortal
t the time of this writing I am just getting a glimpse of the annual calendar our city distributes. And I love it!
Plantation is celebrating its 70th birthday this year and the calendar gives each decade at least one page of photos and historical information. A page at the end of the calendar provides information on each of the more than 50 photos we display.
The calendar is available at city parks and other Plantation locations.
City Chastises Seritage
The administration met with Seritage about their delayed project at the Broward Mall. The main point is we let them know how frustrated the public is with having the property as such an eyesore on one of our busiest corners.
They agreed to find ways to make it more visually appealing. Long-term Seritage is selling off its properties. They had owned 250 and are now down to about 135.
The city in 2019 approved a Seritage project, which had a working title of “The Social.” The north anchor of Broward Mall, Sears, was demolished. The plans were for a YOLO restaurant, two other restaurant-bars, a Powerhouse gym, a Gametime entertainment center and salons. The two non-YOLO restaurants pulled out soon after Covid hit and YOLO never fully committed.
Long-term, some revision of the Broward Mall and the Seritage property will happen. But, sorry, it won’t be soon.
Short-Term Rental Ordinance
Planning and Zoning compiled suggestions from earlier City Council meetings and presented a short-term rental ordinance that is tougher than the one we have in place. The council responded on Dec. 7 with suggestions. For the changes to take effect, the measure must clear the council vote twice; that gives the public two opportunities for input. That is expected sometime in January.
Smoking Ban Discussion
Council member Louis Reinstein suggested the city look at regulating smoking in city parks. Other council members agreed that it is generally a good idea. We’ll have a larger discussion in the future.
Court Awareness
Councilmember Denise Horland read a proclamation similar to one she did last year proclaiming November as Family Court Awareness Month. Plantation resident Ali Kesler, whose 4-year-old son Greyson was killed by his father during a visit approved by the court system, accepted the proclamation and spoke briefly.
Office hours
AI am conducting “Office Hours,” a time for residents to talk about whatever is on their minds. They are generally held from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Fridays. Email AskCityHall@Plantation.org if interested.
