No Bones About It, Doggie Palooza 2019 Promises Tail-Wagging Fun!

nimal lovers get ready for the much-anticipated tail-wagging “Doggie Palooza” experience. All model canine citizens and their humans are invited to the 18th annual dog expo at Happy Tails Dog Park, 6600 S.W. 16th Street, Plantation (Peters Road and SW 63rd Avenue) on January 26th from 10:00am-3:00 pm.

The event was designed to bring the community together with their beloved four-legged friends and showcase information on products and services from local companies. The gate fee is free for canines and $2.00 per human. The proceeds will all be donated to a non-profit animal-related organization. All attendees will receive a treat upon entrance.

“Doggie-Palooza is such a fun event for the City. There are so many vendors with great new dog products and health information. If you are looking to add a four-legged member to the family, there are many South Florida rescues attending with their dogs up for adoption,” said Shannon Ryan City of Plantation Superintendent of Administration and Special Events.

The event attracts over 2,000 people and features over 50 vendors. The Plantation Police Department will have two K9 demonstrations, and there will also be a Frisbee Dog Show, Captain Cartoon Caricatures, and other activities including a Doggie Fun Zone filled with obstacles and toys, and a pet competition.

Owners can enter their pet in one of the three contests: “Best Dog Trick”, “Best Dressed”, and the always popular “Pet-Owner Look-Alike”. Prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place winners.

The GFWC Plantation Women’s Club loves the annual January event so much that once again they are the “Big Dog” sponsor.

“It is a fun experience for the humans who come to Happy Tails Dog Park with their canines. Seeing dogs of all shapes, sizes and breeds are enjoyed by everyone who has ever had a four-legged best friend

or is thinking about the kind of dog they would like for their household,” expressed GFWC Plantation Woman’s Club Past President Helen Ackerman.

Pet lovers are encouraged to attend regardless if they have a dog. Vendor space and sponsorships are available through mid-January for a nominal fee. All dogs must be on a leash, and owners must pick up after their pups.

“Thousands of pet lovers from all over the county look forward to our event each year. JAFCO Male Supporters were All-In at the Second Annual Poker Night

ll bets were in that the second annual “Men’s Poker Night” would be better than the first, and these philanthropic individuals certainly were not bluffing. Last year’s inaugural event came close to raising $30,000 for the JAFCO Children’s Ability Center, and this year they exceeded that figure.

Typically, JAFCO has a well-deserved and wellearned reputation for selling out ladies’ luncheons to raise funds for the 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization which serves abused and neglected children and those with developmental disabilities in MiamiDade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. But once again, over eighty men attended with one common goal. All were betting on a great time and raising much-needed funds for the Center at their very own signature event.

The night began with dinner and drinks followed by card play. Throughout the night, players had access to high-end pub food, an open bar, and a chance to win prizes including a three-day, fournight trip to Atlantis Paradise Island. Once the “Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament” concluded, the tables turned over for guests to play Blackjack.

“We wanted to create a signature event for the men who support JAFCO,” said Jessica Stein, Senior Development Associate at JAFCO. “We had wonderful participation – and a lot of fun – at the Poker Tournament, and we are delighted to have raised over $30,000 to support the incredible work that JAFCO does every day. There were some great winners at the tournament, but we know, it’s the children who win big.”

Since 2014, The JAFCO Children’s Ability Center has been offering support, enrichment, and respite care for families raising a child ages birth to twentytwo with any developmental disability. The center services hundreds of children a month in a beautiful, clean, and fun place where their children can feel safe and feel like they belong. Children can spend a day, weekend or up to two weeks of overnight fun experiences – allowing parents to take a short break.

The Ability Center is now a research institute in partnership with Nova Southeastern University who is studying the impact that these programs and services are having on the strength of the family unit.

“Snow” Much Fun!

elieve it or not, snow was in the forecast at a very special location in Sunrise last month. The children who reside in JAFCO Village as well as those who have been adopted or placed in foster care through JAFCO (Jewish Adoption and Family Care Options) programs donned their warmest winter gear for a special Chanukah celebration.

More than 10 tons of snow, plenty of traditional potato latkes, and lots of donated toys were present at the annual party. Over 150 eager children made snow balls, created snow angels, and were even able to slide down a snowy hill right in their backyard.

Additionally, the traditional menorah lighting was done by JAFCO Director, Sarah Franco, and a gift table was available for children to choose something special.

“Every year we come here to celebrate Chanukah, because it’s a miracle, and for us, it’s a very special day, because we adopted him from JAFCO,” said Taly Raz, about her son.

The smiles were contagious, the laughter outrageous, and the joy instantaneous all because of a philanthropic and loving Plantation couple. Longtime JAFCO supporters Howard and Julie Talenfield once again sponsored the anticipated snow-filled event. The duo’s generous donation has become a holiday tradition that they have been carrying on for over a decade. Howard is a managing partner at Talenfeld Law and Julie is president of BoardroomPR in Fort Lauderdale.

“I challenge anyone to tell me a better feeling than bringing smiles to children’s faces during the holiday season,” said Julie Talenfeld. “My husband and I are proud to continue this tradition of the snow-filled party at JAFCO Village.”

The Talenfelds have a reputation for giving back to the community and making an impact. The big-hearted couple sponsors the Chanukah party so that foster children who live in the

residences at the Children’s Village and children who have been adopted through JAFCO can celebrate the holiday in a unique fashion.

“We’re thrilled to be able to provide a holiday miracle for the children of JAFCO,” added Shelli Gold, Director of Development Operations at JAFCO. “This annual tradition fills the air with magic, laughter and smiles, it’s a very exciting time of year for the children.”

JAFCO was established in 1992 to provide services to abused and neglected children. In September 2014 JAFCO expanded its mission to include children with autism and other developmental disabilities with the opening of the JAFCO Children’s Ability Center, a family enrichment, resource and respite center for families raising a child (ages 0-22) with a developmental disability. The center is in Sunrise and is the only center of its kind in the country offering families intensive support, case management services and overnight and extended out-of-home respite care all under one roof.

Give A Standing Ovation for Plantation’s Performing Arts Volunteers

he Broward Center for the Performing Arts paid tribute to the nearly 900 volunteers who donated 123,000 hours of community service during the past season to the Broward Center and its affiliate venues during its 28th annual volunteer recognition event, presented by Florida Blue.

The Broward Center volunteer ushers are a dynamic mix of theater-lovers, from retired seniors and baby boomers to high school students, many of whom earn community service hours and volunteer alongside a parent or grandparent.

More than 500 of these dedicated volunteers attended an appreciation dinner where they were entertained with musical performances by a cast member of Slow Burn Theatre Company’s, 9 to 5 The Musical, the Broward Center Spotlights youth vocal ensemble and four talented head ushers.

Florida Blue Field Marketing Director Jorge Blanco announced the top three winners. Fort Lauderdale resident Michael Waymire was recognized as the 2019-20 “Volunteer of the Year” for donating 1,480 hours during the season, which was the most by any volunteer. The prize package included tickets to Broadway in Fort

Lauderdale’s Fiddler on the Roof, a dinner gift certificate to Marti’s New River Bistro and gift basket filled with wine, snacks and Broadway show souvenirs.

Also recognized were Plantation resident Aven Roberts who contributed 1,260 hours and Fort Lauderdale resident Lorraine Schramm who donated 775 hours of volunteer time.

Roberts has been volunteering at the Broward Center since 2006. The star volunteer says, “I enjoy being an usher and helping people seeing the shows. The Broward Center is very nice and welcoming place to work. I work with a great group of people and see shows that I may not be able to afford to see otherwise.”

The Broward Center also recognized 23 volunteers who were applauded for service of 10 years or more and received their gold bow tie signifying this level of service. Four volunteers were honored for their 20-year milestone of volunteering.

Included in this great group of volunteers was Annette Kenner who has been volunteering for 27 years. She was at the Broward Center’s opening show of Phantom of the Opera.

Before that, I served in a variety of administrative capacities including assistant principal, dean of students, and summer school director for 16 years at Brophy Prep in Phoenix, Arizona. I received my Doctorate in Education from Nova Southeastern University and my Masters from

Northern Arizona University. I earned my undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan, where I was a member of four Big Ten Championship swim teams. In addition, I was an individual Big Ten Champion and a Big Ten Scholar Athlete.

Speaking of sports, what types of extracurricular activities does NSU University School offer?

We offer abundant opportunities for students including athletics at all levels, visual and performing arts programs, as well as a multitude of clubs. The NSU University School Speech and Debate team is ranked in the top 1% of all teams in the United States and we have had four National Champions in the past three years. BY MAYOR LYNN STONER irst and foremost, it is with sincere humility and great appreciation that I give thanks to all who voted for me. It is in this great country of ours that we have the freedom of speech to voice our votes and opinions at the polls, and I embrace the process with pride.

I sincerely appreciate your confidence in my ability to lead Plantation into a new era. I look back on many of the traditions and values that previous administrations have forged during the past 65 years, and I am thankful for the hard work, dedication, and leadership our past Elected Officials have shown. It has made Plantation one of the top communities for families and businesses in South Florida.

Now, it is time to look forward. I want to send a heartfelt “Congratulations” to our new Councilmembers, Erik Anderson, Denise Horland, and Nick Sortal.

Together with Councilmembers Mark Hyatt and Ron Jacobs we will embark on moving the City forward.

My first formal involvement in public service began with my appointment to the County’s Small Business Advisory Board in 2004, and I’ve never looked back. My advocacy for small businesses is unwavering, and one of my first objectives as Mayor is to review the City’s economic development policies, and work with businesses in the Midtown and Gateway districts, as well as throughout the City, to find ways to improve communication between businesses and the City, help with marketing and outreach efforts, and bring businesses and jobs to Plantation. In a downturned economy, Economic Development should be a top priority, not an afterthought.

Plantation is the geographic center of Broward County. Each day, thousands of cars pour through our City’s major thoroughfares. And while the majority of local traffic is not generated by Plantation residents and businesses, I am keenly aware that it is a valid concern for our residents, and something we need to contend with.

Customer service is also one of my top priorities. I firmly believe that employees should be empowered to do what is necessary to ensure customers who visit our departments walk away from the counter or hang up the phone having the best possible experience. I am also deeply committed to ensuring employees have the appropriate technology to do their jobs in the most effective and efficient manner possible. Processes and procedures are important, but “we’ve always done it that way,” won’t work in today’s society. I will be looking at how we do business here in the City, and work to ensure every customer walk away satisfied.

Not all my ideas and plans will work, but I can assure you that together with City employees and Elected Officials, we will leave no stone unturned, no program unexamined. I am very excited – and a little nervous – as I look ahead at the task before. But I am confident that together, we will make Plantation the best version of itself.

Typically, people give their old flags to scouts, and their local fire and police stations,” said Poling. “But because I knew that most people had no idea where to drop off their used flags, I decided that I should make drop boxes that could go to my local police and fire stations. The drop boxes help to inform those in the community who do

not know where to bring their flags. I have also not seen many of these around, so it was a contribution I was happy to make. From that point forward, I began planning out my project.”

The ambitious scout recorded a total of 198 hours to complete his project. Information about flag retirement along with fun facts about the American flag are attached to the box and those that deposit theirs are welcome to join the troop for the impressive service.

Before Thanksgiving a total of six flags were collected from the box at the Plantation Police Department and an entire box was collected from the Plantation Fire Rescue Department.

“I believe that this project is a great benefit to the City of Plantation as it provides a connection between the scouts and the community. I am proud to have done this project and I am very happy to know that it will better my community,” added Poling.

Be Safe When Traveling

BY CHIEF HOWARD HARRISON ell, the holiday season has passed, and many people look forward to some rest and relaxation but must get back to work.

However, for many, it is the time to go on vacation, whether they are driving somewhere nearby or flying to a much further destination. Whichever is the case, one becomes a tourist.

A vacation that one has been looking forward to can become an instant disaster if they put down their guard. One may be less likely to pay attention to security issues while seeking to rest and enjoy some leisure time and take a break from negative aspects and events of everyday life. They may even be willing to take risks and visit unfamiliar environments. While on vacation, security becomes physically and psychologically a secondary concern.

Tourists are the preferred target because they are usually relaxed and carry large amounts of money or other valuables visibly. Please don’t show off how much money you have, how many credit cards you can use, or how much jewelry you own. The more tempting it looks for a criminal, the more you risk being a victim.

Tourists are more vulnerable in a social space that is not their own. They often give out obvious signs that they are visitors, like having a rental car, constantly taking pictures, and using maps. If you need assistance with directions, go to a police or fire department. If you are staying in a hotel, get your directions from one of the desk clerks or the concierge.

Tourists usually don’t report a crime since they may have difficulty identifying assailants or aggressors. Chances are that a visitor probably would not come back for a trial or trials. Tourists rarely return to testify. Criminals use the “here today, gone tomorrow” attitude, and know that it is very unlikely one will report and prosecute.

Tourists think that the best luggage is the most expensive luggage. But expensive luggage gives the idea that there are expensive things inside the luggage. Old and worn luggage can give the impression that there might be more non-desirable things inside. The same goes for your wallet or handbag. Use a small handbag and just put inside what you absolutely need. Fanny packs are even better. Men, please put your wallet in your front pocket instead of your back pocket. It is much easier to take a wallet from the back instead of the front.

We all want to take a vacation or a road trip. But taking one that is safe is better than taking one that is a disaster. A few little changes can make the difference. Happy Traveling!

appy New Year! If you’re like many people, you might have resolved to exercise more in 2019. Starting a new exercise routine can result in foot and ankle injuries if you’re not careful.

Here are answers to commonly asked questions by new exercise enthusiasts: Why does the bottom of my heel hurt?

Plantar fasciitis is a very common overuse injury.

Dramatic increase in activity over a short period of time, coupled with poor supporting footwear, can ignite an episode of sudden heel pain.

Treatment includes but is not limited to: offloading, stretching, orthotics, cortisone injection, platelet rich plasma, shockwave therapy, and end stage surgery if conservative care fails.

Why do my legs hurt?

Shin splints can either occur in the front outside or back inside portion of the leg. They also tend to occur when the patient has flatfeet and tight

calves. Shin splints is a very common overuse injury. Treatment includes but is not limited to: offloading, stretching, orthotics, compression sleeves, and physical therapy.

Why does the back of my heel hurt?

Achilles tendonitis is likely to occur after repetitive ankle motion type exercise and activity.

Excessive jump rope, plyometrics, stair climbing, and distance running on hills can create inflammation to the achilles tendon. Treatment includes but is not limited to: offloading, stretching, orthotics, heel lifts, and physical therapy.

Why does the inside of my foot hurt?

Posterior tibial tendonitis occurs mainly in the flatfooted patient, to which the main tendon that holds up the arch becomes inflamed due to the increase in workload without proper arch support.

Treatment includes but is not limited to: offloading, orthotics, and physical therapy.

Why does the outside of my ankle hurt?

Peroneal tendonitis occurs after distance running on uneven surfaces. These tendons serve as ankle stabilizers so cross training on several different terrains can cause inflammation. Treatment includes but is not limited to: offloading, orthotics, ankle brace, and physical therapy.

ew Year’s celebrations provide us with a sense of renewal, revitalization, and resolutions to improve ourselves as we move forward. Too often, however, the revelry fades quickly as the realities of daily life take over.

The change of the calendar presents an opportunity for the Fire Department to begin writing a new chapter in its history book as well.

BY ADRIAN ROZNOWSKI M.D., F.A.C.O.G. OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY here is one question that has transcended my career. I hear it today as much as I heard it during my first interview for an obstetrics and gynecology residency over a decade ago. While phrased differently the core remains constant.

“As a male physician why did you choose OBGYN?” I cannot say that I’ve grown accustomed to answering this question, I have not developed a canned response. After the initial pause, I do my best to use it as a bonding opportunity and perhaps to separate myth from fact.

When it comes to gynecology, two topics that are habitually separated into different topics yet are invariably one of the same are preventive gynecology and cancer. The annual exam also known as the annual ode to procrastination in some circles lasts an average of fifteen to twenty minutes and usually comes without the discomfort of blood draws.

Through education and a short exam. It gives the seasoned gynecologist enough information to be able to prevent or diagnose over 90% of gynecologic cancers as well as breast cancer. The fair share of advanced malignancies that I diagnosed had the common denominator of limited to no medical care for quite some time. When I politely delved further into the reasons of this oversight the vast majority of women cited busy lives and putting off an exam that they particularly did not look forward to.

Gynecology is advancing at a breakneck pace. Gone are the days of large speculums, needless blood draws and large surgical incisions. Even the days of yearly pap smears and the discomfort of a yearly speculum examination are behind us. The modern gynecologist accomplishes his objective largely through counseling, education and a targeted painless physical exam that uses the smallest, appropriate instruments (if any) to visualize and assess the pelvic organs in the shortest possible time.

Even in a perfect compliant patient who sees their gynecologist yearly, cancer or precancerous lesions do occur. Given the advancements in the field, these early manifestations can usually be treated on an outpatient basis with limited follow up visits. After the appropriate tests, the vast majority of these patients can have curative procedures in the office or at an outpatient surgical center.

While exceptions do happen, I have not encountered a single woman with an advanced gynecologic malignancy that had been previously been seeing a gynecologist on a yearly basis. Gynecologic cancers are slow growing and largely preventable. In an efficient office, a full visit including taking time for traveling can be accomplished within two hours. Coupled with your compliance this short visit can give you peace of mind for a year.

Why did I choose obstetrics and gynecology? To this day I cannot precisely say. It’s a multifaceted field that transcends medicine and lifelong bonds devoid of simple answers.

Over 50 avid golfers and senior advocates joined the Aging and Disability Resource Center to commemorate the “30th Annual Swing for Seniors Golf Tournament” at Plantation’s Jacaranda Golf Club.
