Moments of Kindness

T

his year we will mark the 20th anniversary of the worst terrorist attack in American history.

Like many, we will never forget the moment we learned of the tragedy and vowed to never forget.

We were living in Hong Kong, on a temporary work assignment at the time of the attack. After confirming the safety of our friends, coworkers, and loved ones we spent the remainder of that day wandering through that great city in a bit of a numb fog. What we will also never forget was the omnipresent kindness of strangers on that day.

Countless Chinese and Cantonese strangers approached us that day to offer condolences. Our appearance and mannerisms made it fairly obvious we were Americans. Strangers simply wanted us to know they felt the same grief we did. Outside the United States Consulate people had begun placing flowers in a sort-of make-shift memorial. We attempted to purchase flowers to place but were told they would be free for us on that day.

A young girl gave us a single yellow flower as if we were somehow representative of those who had been lost.

Like everyone, remembering that terrible day will always conjure images of the worst people can be. But, for us, we also remember those moments of kindness and shared humanity.

We are hopeful, even in our darkest moments, that the “greater angels” of our souls will win out.

This day is recognized by United States law as a National Day of Service and Remembrance and has been observed every year since that tragic day in 2001.

he Holocaust Documentation & Education Center (HDEC) continues to educate students on how to combat bullying and modern-day racism through its annual Visual Arts & Writing Contests: The Jean & Jules Kluger Annual Visual Arts and Writing Contest and the “A Simple Act of Kindness” Contest. This year, students created a wide array of artistic creations, including paintings, poems, essays, and multimedia presentations. There was a total of 149 entries and 23 winners.

The Jean & Jules Kluger Annual Visual Arts and Writing Contest seeks to engage students from grades K – 12 and empower them to submit either a literary, visual arts or musical creative expression addressing the contest theme. This year the theme was: “How Can We Be Our Brother’s Keeper and Stand Up for One Another?” The “A Simple Act of Kindness” Contest, which is inspired by the novel Pay it Forward, encourages students to demonstrate how their community involvement affects positive change in the world. This contest is also open to students from grades K – 12.

For the second year, students faced the added obstacle of COVID-19 and, despite the fact that schools were operating both in-person and virtually, all the students and teachers did everything they could to participate in the contests.

“Year after year, I continue to be overwhelmingly impressed and moved by the contest submissions from students as young as elementary school up to the seniors in high school,” said Rositta Kenigsberg, president of the Holocaust Documentation and Education Center. “We are proud to see that they are truly representing part of our mission in promoting kindness and understanding the ramifications of prejudice and hate.”

This year’s winners include two Flanagan High School students Rida Yousuf ,Grade 11, who won 1st place in the Jean & Jules Kluger writing contest and Christian PierreJullot,Grade 11,who was awarded 2nd place in the “A Simple Act of Kindness” Writing contest.

n September 11, 2001, Miramar Police Captain Mike Yepez was wearing a different uniform. He was working as a New York City Police Department (NYPD) patrol officer. Below is his personal story of that fateful day: I used to work the night shift. When I would arrive home at around 6:30-7:00 a.m., I would always unplug my home phone to sleep without interruptions. For some unknown reason I didn’t unplug my phone that day. That had never happened.

At around 8 a.m. I received a call from my lieutenant and was told I had to come in for court.

As I was driving on the Verrazano Bridge, listening to the radio, I heard about a plane crashing into the Twin Towers. I thought it was a bad joke until I looked up and saw the smoke. I passed the toll bridge and saw the second plane strike the second tower.

I knew then it was no accident. I still get goosebumps thinking about it.

My fiancé at the time, Jenny, was working at the World Trade Center building 7. Along with the towers, that building collapsed as well. Cell phones were not as common as they are today. We didn’t own one and I was concerned and unable to get a hold of her.

I remember walking into the 66 Precinct, and everyone was crying. I was told to suit up in our riot gear. There was an utter silence in the locker room. That was uncommon. Usually, guys were joking around and being loud. Fifteen of us squeezed into a transport van and headed toward the towers. Vehicles in the Battery Tunnel were not moving. We evacuated everyone in the cars and decided to walk through the Battery tunnel into Manhattan. The site looked like a scene from a movie… a cloud of dust; people running, screaming, crying; chaos. It seemed unreal. I kept thinking about how to get into contact with Jenny.

By: Captain Mike Yepez Our assignment was to help with rescue efforts. Exhausted from the previous shift and with no sleep, I worked for another 38 hours. We all wanted to save someone.

That’s what pushed us to continue working, while breathing in soot. At that point we had no masks, and we didn’t care.

I was relieved of duty for twelve hours and was able to go home. That’s when I found out Jenny had survived. She had walked out of her building after the first plane hit and decided not to go back in. She walked that day for hours and hours to her parents’ home in New Jersey.

For the next three months many NYPD officers worked twelve hour shifts with no days off. I felt as if I was on autopilot. I didn’t have the leisure to feel anything. It took six months for what occurred to really sink-in.

Jenny didn’t have a job anymore; knew she wouldn’t be seeing much of me during the recovery efforts and decided to stay with her parents in their second home in Miramar.

Nine months later I decided to give South Florida a try, but in my heart I felt I would be back in New York within a year.

And I was… I had taken a short trip back to file paperwork for my return to the NYPD. That trip conjured up many memories, good and bad. When I returned to the Florida sunshine, I decided my life would continue here. I love New York, but 9/11 had forever

changed the course of my life and career.

The Miramar Police Department became my home in 2002. Grateful for what the department has offered me throughout my career, I find great joy in mentoring new recruits. When I was asked to write about my 9/11 experience, I pulled from an album an old picture of me in my NYPD uniform.

The kid in that picture had no idea what he was getting himself into. However, every time he put that uniform on, he enjoyed every minute of it and did it with pride and honor.

When I left New York, I bought a video commemorating 9/11. I have yet been able to watch it. It took me about 10 years before I was able to even speak about what happened that day and deal with all of the emotions.

We often hear the term “Never Forget.”

On this 20th Anniversary of 9/11, I will ‘Never Forget’ the pride we felt to be an American at that time. It didn’t matter what your background was or what uniform you were wearing that day. We all came together and showed the world the compassion we had for each other.

Captain Mike Yepez will be a guest speaker at Miramar’s 9/11 Memorial Site Dedication on Saturday, September 11th, 2021, 9:30 a.m. at Miramar Regional Park.

n a Dissolution of Marriage the couple’s finances are usually the main issue in the case. Finances are considered in determining the division of assets and liabilities (equitable distribution), child support and alimony. In most instances determining a spouse’s income is not very difficult. Tax returns, w-2’s and pay stubs can assist in determining a person’s yearly income. However, not everyone is a salaried employee who gets paid on either a yearly salary or standard 40 hour work week. There are many people who work on commission or have a large part of their income paid in either quarterly or yearly bonuses. So are these bonuses income? How do we determine income when a bonus is not guaranteed or a commissioned sales person cannot predict how his year will be? In determining child support each parent’s income must be considered to calculate the monthly support. It cannot be recalculated each month depending on an individual’s income which may vary based on sales totals or bonuses.

Income is actually defined by Florida Statutes as follows:

The above clearly shows that income is not just what a person may bring home each week in a check. Car allowances for instance would be considered reimbursed expenses or in kind payments, which must be considered as income. I am often asked whether overtime (again never guaranteed) is income. The answer is yes and it will be considered when determining child support. Of course if overtime is no longer available because of economic conditions than it should be considered as well.

A voluntary reduction in income, such as refusing overtime when it is available, is not permitted and such a reduction will not be considered. In addition, a person cannot voluntarily reduce his/her income by changing jobs and expect to be able to either reduce or increase a child support or alimony obligation. If someone is “underemployed” additional income may be imputed by the courts. Of course, sometimes a reduction in income can occur due to circumstances beyond the individuals control.

What Can I Do About My Bunion?

A

bunion is a bony bump that forms on the joint at the base of your big toe. It is part of your normal foot and not a growth of new bone. The foot bones are starting to spread out, making the bone more prominent.

Here are answers to commonly asked questions about bunions and bunion surgery: What is the cause of bunions? Most commonly it is hereditary. Tight shoes will often bring out the problem sooner. Poor foot structure (i.e. flatfeet) may also contribute to the problem.

Can I avoid getting bunions if my mother and grandmother have them? Generally, no. You may wear shoes that are wider in the toe box. This may delay the onset of bunions and prevent them from getting very painful. Eventually, a bunion will appear if you are predisposed to it.

Do bunions get worse? Over time the bones in the feet spread out further making a bunion appear larger. It may take months to many years, but they will almost always get worse, especially if you are pronated or flatfooted. Cartilage will start to wear thin and some degree of arthritis may develop.

What causes the pain over the bunion? Shoes that are narrow put pressure on the skin, nerves and bone.

Numbness or tingling may also develop as the nerve gets compressed against the bone by tight shoes.

Can the bunion be corrected? Bunions can be corrected surgically if the bunion is painful and it is unresponsive to conservative care. In some cases, small bunions hurt much more than large bunions.

Is it painful to have surgery? When done correctly by an experienced surgeon minimal pain is involved.

We have done more than 5,000 bunion surgeries.

Can I walk on it immediately after surgery? We advise people to stay off their foot for two or three days.

A surgical boot is utilized for a period of six weeks to protect the area and allow it to heal properly.

How quickly can I return to work after surgery? It usually requires four days of rest at home before returning to work. A special surgical shoe or boot is given to take stress off the area and prevent problems from developing postoperatively.

How long will it take to get back into normal shoes?

Everyone is different. It will usually take four to six weeks to get back into flat shoes or sneakers.

Heels may take two to three months.

Will I be able to resume sports after surgery? Stationery bicycles may be used one to two weeks after

surgery. Running sports and activities may require six or more weeks.

I had bunion surgery many years ago and it has come back. Can I do something about it? Yes. If the surgical procedure is done correctly a second time the results may be outstanding provided that there are no arthritic changes in the joint. If there are arthritic changes, many surgical options are available to correct the deformity.

What is the long-term prognosis? In almost all cases, it is excellent. The earlier the treatment, the better the long-term prognosis because arthritic changes are minimized.

ear Reader: It is hard to believe that 20 years have passed since terrorists commandeered airplanes, taking the lives of nearly 3,000 people, in horrific attacks on our country. Despite the time, the memories remain vivid and all too recent for many, especially those directly affected.

I would like to personally invite everyone to attend the 9/11 Ceremony on Saturday, September 11, 2021 as the City of Pembroke Pines remembers and honors those who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington D.C. and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The ceremony will take place at Memorial Park adjacent to the Charles F. Dodge City Center, located at 601 City Center Way. Beginning September 1, 2021, visitors of the Charles F. Dodge City Center, located at 601 City Center Way, can discover and celebrate diverse histories and rich culture through a new pop-up exhibition series in the lobby. Presented by The City of Pembroke Pines Recreation and Cultural Arts Department, Upfront in The Pines is a rotating exhibition series that focuses on culture, education and history.

In collaboration with Florida Memory, Upfront in The Pines offers a special opportunity to view media from the Florida State Library and Archives of Florida. Displays will include documentary photography, literature and maps. Additionally, QR codes will provide links to Florida Memory’s digital archives containing related film media and audio clips. Guests can enjoy the pop-up exhibit during a short visit, or follow links to Florida’s state archives to uncover cultural moments and reveal hidden histories. Masks are required in City Hall.

We also have some exciting news for the kids in the city. The Touch-A-Truck Vehicle Expo is coming back and will take place on September 25, 2021 from 10 am to noon at the Charles F. Dodge City Center, located at 601 City Center Way. Children will have the opportunity to get up close and explore, climb and touch trucks, emergency response vehicles, heavy machinery, construction vehicles and all sorts of other equipment used for transportation.

Guests of all ages also will be able to meet the personnel who serve and protect the community, including Fire and Police Officers. Visitors will be able to ask questions and actually experience what the vehicles are truly like. An added bonus as part of this learning experience is having the opportunity for one-on-one interaction with local and national transportation representatives.

HER STORY

Lynne Kunins discovered her true calling when she volunteered to work with South Florida kids of parents that were serving time in prison. She led the kids through after-school team-building games, fun routines for building physical skills, and provided hands on experiences with new and healthy foods. She felt such a strong connection to these kids that she promised to find a way to sustain and expand the program.

Lynne founded FLIPANY in 2005 and started writing grant proposals. It was a struggle in the early days, working alone and learning the hard way. Lynne’s first hire was a registered dietitian — a commitment to ensuring program quality — and in the first year of operations she hosted the first Annual FLIPANY Fun Run, became the designated Florida Partner for Cooking Matters food skills education programs, and managed an operating budget of $106,000. Sixteen years later, FLIPANY operates a budget of over 6 million dollars with a team of 26 full time staff and management team.

During Covid-19 pandemic, FLIPANY retooled its programming to distribute healthy meals to kids and adults and to provide virtual cooking classes, fitness classes, and nutrition education activities.

By the end of 2020, FLIPANY had partnered with over 250 South Florida meal distribution locations to deliver over 2 million healthy meals.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG WOMEN?

Lynne’s number one tip for aspiring women in business would be to work on something you want to wake up to everyday and make a difference; make mistakes, learn, grow, and partner with people who want to see you and your business succeed.

Collaborations are very important because you learn from other businesses and that’s exactly what Lynne did since day one; asked questions and sometimes for forgiveness but never stopped building relationships with her community.
