Navigating the Back-to-School Season in the Modern Age
As we bid farewell to the sun-kissed days of summer, it’s hard to believe that another school year is just around the corner. With the arrival of August 21st, the first day of school for most children in the area, it’s time to gather the necessary school supplies, select the perfect lunch box, and wrap up those summer reading assignments. However, preparing for school has become increasingly intricate over the past two decades, as technology and educational options have evolved.
Gone are the days of covering textbooks in brown paper bags. The rapid advancement of technology has transformed the way students engage with learning materials. From downloading software onto smartphones, iPads, and Chromebooks, to accessing a vast array of digital resources, students now have a world of knowledge at their fingertips.
After-school programs have blossomed into a diverse range of opportunities, surpassing the traditional offerings of sports and music. Today, students can choose from an array of enriching activities, including computer classes, dual language programs, and much more. Likewise, parents now have an abundance of educational options for their children. In addition to traditional public and private schools, charter schools, home school, and virtual schools have emerged, providing families with a broader selection tailored to their needs.
If your family finds itself in the midst of the back-to-school preparations without a concrete plan, fear not! Our City is here to lend a helping hand. Inside this issue, you’ll discover our comprehensive Back-to-School Guide, designed to assist you in navigating the educational landscape. Packed with valuable information on the area’s top preschools, private schools, and educational programs, as well as an extensive directory of after-school activities ranging from arts to YMCA programs, this curated guide aims to provide practical support as you gear up for the upcoming school year.
Amidst the hustle and bustle of back-to-school preparations, it’s important to savor the remaining weeks of summer. Cherish the sun-drenched days, create lasting memories, and relish the freedom that this season offers. Before you know it, school will be back in session, and a new chapter of growth and learning will begin.
So, take a deep breath, enjoy the fleeting moments of summer, and rest assured that you have the resources and support to embrace the forthcoming school year with confidence.

Uniting Communities Through Baseball Pembroke Pines Mayor's “Play Ball” Initiative
Mayor Frank Ortis of Pembroke Pines hosted a heartwarming event in collaboration with the United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) and Major League Baseball. The annual Mayor's Play Ball Summer event, featuring the timeless charm of a classic song, took place at Flamingo Park on July 15th.
Children between the ages of 7 and 14 were invited to participate in this free event, which aimed to promote youth baseball and softball. The day was filled with exciting activities, music, and delicious food, ensuring everyone had a great time.
The kids were split into age groups, and Mayor Ortis led the pitch, hit, and run competitions.
Pembroke Pines has been actively involved in the Major League Baseball program since its launch in June 2015. This nationwide campaign aims to encourage continued participation in baseball and foster a connection between generations through the love of the game.
Play Ball provides an excellent platform for current baseball enthusiasts to engage further, while also offering opportunities for those interested in getting involved, with a
special focus on youth participation. Thanks to the collaboration with mayors across the country, Play Ball Events are taking place until August 2022, energizing communities and nurturing the passion for baseball and softball.
Representatives from the Florida Marlins joined the event this year, adding to the excitement. Along with on-field activities, the children received Play Ball t-shirts, relished tasty snacks, tried their luck at the dunk tank, and had the joy of taking pictures with Marlin's mascot, Bill Marlin. It was a day filled with laughter, sportsmanship, and cherished memories for everyone involved.
“We love getting out here with the kids,” said Mayor Ortis, “it puts a smile on everyone’s face!”

championships. Afterward, he played one season at the University of Central Florida (UCF) and became the program's first-ever first-round draft pick.
Howard, who was also part of the talented University School team, transferred to IMG Academy for his final two years of high school. Following his high school career, he played college basketball at the University of Michigan under the guidance of his father, Juwan Howard, a former 19-year NBA player who currently serves as the head coach for the Wolverines.
Notably, with the Orlando Magic, Howard will join forces with Jonathan Isaac, who attended the International School of Broward in Hollywood for two seasons.
On June 22nd, the National Basketball Association (NBA) conducted its annual amateur draft, during which 58 of the finest basketball players from around the world were selected by the NBA's 30 teams. Notably, Broward County produced five players who were chosen in this draft.
The first pair of players from Broward County were the Thompson twins, who showcased their skills at Pine Crest School. Amen Thompson was picked as the fourth overall selection by the Houston Rockets, followed by his brother, Ausar Thompson, who was chosen by the Detroit Pistons in the subsequent pick.
Taylor Hendricks, who played for both University School and Calvary Christian, was selected as the ninth pick by the Utah Jazz. Jett Howard, hailing from University School, became the 11th pick, joining the Orlando Magic. Lastly, Toumani Camara from ChaminadeMadonna concluded Broward County's representation by being selected as the 52nd pick by the Phoenix Suns in the second round.
The Thompson twins initially made the varsity team at Pine Crest in eighth grade and quickly rose to become two of the top players in the country. They
led Pine Crest to a state championship during their junior year, both averaging over 20 points per game. After their junior seasons, Amen and Ausar decided to depart Pine Crest and join the professional Overtime Elite league in Atlanta.
Hendricks played alongside Barnes, Howard, and Vernon Carey Jr. at University School, forming a formidable team. He later transferred to Calvary Christian for his final two years of high school, where he won consecutive state
Although Camara was born in Belgium, he moved to South Florida and played high school basketball at Chaminade-Madonna. He went on to play two years of college basketball at the University of Georgia before transferring to Dayton for an additional two seasons, where he earned recognition as an all-conference player. Camara's selection in the NBA draft marks a significant milestone as he becomes the first-ever player from ChaminadeMadonna to be drafted into the NBA.

“I’M COMING HOME”
BCPS
SELECTS PETER LICATA AS NEW SUPERINTENDENT
Broward County Public School Board (BCPS) announced the selection of Dr. Peter Licata as its next superintendent. The country’s sixth-largest school district announced the selection after a nationwide search. Licata is set to be in place prior to the start of the 2023/24 school year. He was selected via a 7-2 board vote. East Baton Rouge Louisiana School District Superintendent Dr. Sito Narcisse received the other two votes.
BCPS Board Chair Lori Alhadeff announced the selection, saying, “I am so excited to introduce the next superintendent of Broward County Public Schools, Dr. Peter Licata. I believe he is the transformational leader that we were seeking.”
By joining BCPS, Licata is coming full circle, returning to the school district where he was once a first-grade student at McNab Elementary School in Pompano Beach.
“I’m coming home. We will change Broward County to an A (school district),” Dr. Licata said, “We are down the street from where I was born and where my wife was born.
I feel like a fortunate son to be able to do this.”
Licata began his almost 30-year career in education as a teacher and basketball coach for the School District of Palm Beach County and has continued to advance his leadership career – most recently holding the position of South Region Superintendent. In this role, he oversees 60 schools, 65,000 students, more than 5,000 teachers and four instructional superintendents.
Licata comes from a family of teachers and was inspired to pursue his career by his father.
“It was at my father’s funeral, when thousands of people came to me to say what an impact, as coach and algebra teacher, my father had on their lives. That day I became a teacher.” Licata said during his public remarks at the school board’s public interview.
Licata’s experience includes 15 years of teaching and leading at the middle and high school levels, and 14 years at the district-leadership level as Director

of Secondary Curriculum and Assistant Superintendent, before becoming a regional superintendent.
“Our goal has remained to find the most qualified candidate to lead our schools while maintaining our dedication to excellence in education and to preparing our students to reach their highest potential,” Alhadeff commented. “We are excited to welcome Dr. Licata to Broward County Public Schools.”
During the interview process, the new superintendent laid out his vision to get the school system to become an ‘A’ district.
“It’s my vision and mission that every child that starts school at BCPS has an experience as memorable as mine with the same opportunities. I know being born and raised in Broward County doesn’t automatically qualify me as the best candidate, but I believe it gives me a unique perspective and knowledge of the county… Broward County is where I was born, raised, married, and I now want to make it the best educational system in all of Florida as superintendent..

ith the backto-school season in full swing, students everywhere are gearing up with new backpacks to carry their books, laptops, and supplies. While backpacks are a convenient and essential tool for students, improper use can lead to back pain, muscle strain, and potential long-term spinal issues. To ensure a healthy and pain-free school year, it's important to learn and implement proper backpack use techniques, backed by chiropractic recommendations.
It’s common to see children carrying backpacks equaling as much as 25% of their body weight. The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) recommends a backpack weigh no more than
By Dr. Alphonso Chie
W5% to 10% of a child’s weight.
A large, roomy backpack may always seem like a good idea. However, the more space there is to fill, the more likely your child will fill it. If something’s not essential, have them leave it at home, in their locker, or the classroom.
If your child regularly carries home a heavy backpack, you may need to talk to their teachers. Remind them that your chiropractor is concerned about the short- and long-term effects on children’s musculoskeletal development and function.
Remember, too, that your child may not think about telling you the backpack is too heavy. Observe their backpack habits, and intervene for them if necessary.
Show your child how to put the largest and heaviest items in first, usually in the largest pocket of the backpack.
For even weight distribution, be sure to make use of the multiple compartments for smaller items.
3 Keys to Backpack Safety
• Make sure your child uses both backpack straps. Using one strap shifts the weight to one side and this can cause muscle pain and posture problems.
• Make sure the shoulder straps are tight, so the backpack fits closely to your child’s back. A low-hanging backpack can cause spinal misalignment and pain.
• Encourage your child to use the chest and waist straps and adjust them to the load each time, to and from school. If you or your student are experiencing back or neck pain caused by wearing a backpack or for any reason, Revive Chiropractic can help. Contact us for a wellness checkup today!

Pembroke Pines UPDATE
By Mayor Frank C. Ortis
ear Readers: In a few weeks, families will be making the transition from the lazy days of summer to the new school year. It’s a time when parents often breathe a sigh of relief, and students and teachers anticipate new beginnings and new challenges.
It’s also a time when motorists should slow down and proceed with caution in school zones, stop for buses and be alert for children walking in the street or biking to school. Parents can help by teaching their children safety rules, and supervising young children as they walk or bike to school or as they wait at the school bus stop. And, students should practice the safety rules for waiting at the bus stop, getting on and off the bus, and riding the bus. If walking to school, they should learn and practice the safety rules for pedestrians, cross at cross walks, obey all traffic signs, traffic lights and safety patrol instructions.
Although the summer is starting to wind down, I hope everyone still gets a chance to take some time to relax a bit and enjoy all the amenities the City of Pembroke Pines has to offer during our summer months. I encourage all Pines residents to visit the Recreation & Cultural Arts web page at www.ppines. com, check our calendars, and visit our social media pages on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for more information. You can also sign up to receive a digital newsletter full of information about what is happening in the city twice a month via email – to subscribe, please go to www.ppines.com/Newsflash. You won’t want to miss Splash in the Pines which is on August 14th.
Be sure to also check out the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center’s many monthly Social Service programs, created to enhance the well-being of seniors by providing assistance and facilitating services to them while maintaining an independent lifestyle. There are also many interesting classes such as, chess,
Dfloral arrangement workshops and jewelry-making classes. For more information, please call the Center at 954-450-6888.
Just a quick note to let you know that the City is developing a Community Public Art Plan and needs your input. We’d like to hear from everyone, so please either go to our website page or this link to complete a short survey before August 21st. The intent of the plan is to advance the current public art program to be vibrant, interactive and inclusive, to represent all of the Pembroke Pines community, and to develop a vision and direction for art in the public realm. https://survey. alchemer.com/s3/7310667/PembrokePines-Community-Survey-A-Vision-forPublic-Art
Lastly, please remember that we are still in hurricane season and are quickly approaching our most active time of the year. I hope everyone has their hurricane plans in place and are taking steps to prepare. This also includes pruning trees and landscaping now before a storm is on our doorstep. Be sure to visit our hurricane preparedness information at www.ppines.com/hurricane to help you in your preparations. There are helpful tips, informational videos, resources etc. covering every aspect of making sure we are storm safe.

RUNNING SHOES
HISTORY, ANATOMY, & TIPS ON PURCHASING YOUR IDEAL RUNNING SHOE
ANATOMY OF A RUNNING SHOE (PART 2)
How important are running shoes and what role do they play in preventing or even causing injury?
Before answering this question, one must ponder this important point. Running requires conditioning and conditioning requires a consistent and deliberate training schedule. Running shoes are but an adjunct to avoiding injury. Who can forget the great Ethiopian marathoner Abebe Bakila who in 1960 won a gold medal in the Rome Olympics in 2:12 barefooted? To Africans, running barefoot is not a particularly unusual sight. Ethiopians and Kenyans are known to train barefoot and had been doing so since they were children because running is the sole source of transportation to and from school.
The Tarahumara Indians in Copper Canyon New Mexico hunt deer for several days covering 100-200 miles of rocky mule track. These exceptional athletes would hunt deer by literally running them to exhaustion. The incredible feat is accomplished while wearing homemade sandals constructed from the treads of discarded truck tires.
What is it that keeps the Indians and Africans from becoming injured in light of the fact that they are not wearing high-tech running shoes? The answer lies essentially in one word, conditioning. Running shoes are but half the battle against injury prevention, the other half requires a proper training schedule. While it’s true that our concrete jungles do not mimic the natural impact absorbing properties of soil and sand found in other regions, we nevertheless require the conditioning necessary by training smartly and safely. Novices quickly discover that the shoe is not a substitute for good training. That being said, the purpose of a running shoe is twofold. It is necessary to absorb impact and stabilize- or control unnecessary and abnormal motion of the foot in the shoe. Chronic overuse injuries generally occur because of excessive impact, excessive motion, or both. We describe the motion in the foot in terms of pronation (an excessive pronator has flat feet) and supination (an excessive supinator generally has high arched or cavus feet). Running shoes are designed to accommodate specific foot types, training distances, and body weight. They may also be used in certain circumstances to avoid or treat specific injuries. One needs to know how to match these features with
By Dr. Michael M. Cohen, DPM, FACFAS
their particular needs. Because of the many variables described it is clear that there will be no single perfect shoe for everybody.
To find an appropriate running shoe it’s essential that runners become familiar with a shoe’s anatomy. Below are a few of the major components:
ANATOMY OF A RUNNING SHOE
▸ Toe box: This is the front of the shoe where the forefoot and toes lie. It can take many shapes: pointed (narrow), rounded (wide), low or high. The size of the toe box allows the shoes to accommodate for the width of the foot as well as hammertoe and bunion deformities.
▸ Midsole: This is the rubbery white or grey stuff in the sole of the shoe and is made of EVA or polyurethane. It functions to control movement and absorb shock and may harbor additional shock-absorbing inserts such as air or gel. A disadvantage to air and gel is in the loss of stability with additional cushioning is adversely proportional to the stability of the shoe.
▸ Counter: The heel counter is the portion that wraps around the back of the heel and helps to control its motion, it provides stability. The stiffer the counter the better the stability. A stable heel counter is good for flexible feet (usually the flexible flat foot).
▸ Last design: This refers to the shape of the shoe. It may come in straight (good for flat feet), semi-curved (the average foot), or curved (good for high arched feet and midfoot strikers). (HINT: Trace your foot and match it to the shoe design.)
▸ Lateral: Outer edge of the shoe.
▸ Medial: Inner edge of the shoe (along the arch and great toe).
▸ Insole: Removable footplate and shoe which often comes with attachable arch cookies.
▸ Motion control: These are designs used to control overpronating feet (rolling in of the foot), and is generally necessary for feet that are flat and flexible. I do not recommend this type of shoe for runners or walkers who are plagued with knee arthritis because of their inherent lack of shock absorption.
▸ Outsole: The material on the bottom of the shoe which contacts the ground and is made of carbon rubber. The outsole grips the ground and is a descendent of the Nike waffle pattern designed by Oregon coach Bill Bowerman over half a century ago.
▸ Upper: This is the cloth of the shoe connected to the rubber portion or the midsole.
▸ Rocker: this refers to the shape of the bottom of the shoe while viewing the shoe from the side. There may be a curve under the ball of the foot referred to as a forefoot rocker or in the center of the arch referred to as a midfoot rocker. Rockers are excellent for offloading the ball of the foot and are appropriate for those with a history of metatarsal stress fractures, inflexibility, or arthritis in the ball of the foot and the Achilles tendon. Rockers are also very effective in treating plantar fasciitis.
▸ Last type: If you pull the insole out of the shoe, you can observe how the last was constructed. Slip lasted shoes are sewn like a moccasin from the heel to the toes along the center of the shoe, this is the most flexible design. A board lasted shoe maintains a firm fiberboard throughout and is the most rigid design. This provides the most stiffness and best stability. Combination lasting is a combination of the two and provides advantages of both designs. Most shoes now bear this type of last.

Pet of the Month
Greetings From Your Chamber President!
By Patty Archer
In today's rapidly evolving business landscape, the support of pro-business policies are crucial for fostering economic prosperity. As a Chamber of Commerce, we understand the vital role we play in promoting the growth and success of our local business community. By advocating for policies that create a favorable business environment, we can drive economic growth and enhance our area’s competitiveness.
Legislative Advocacy serves as a powerful catalyst for change, providing a platform for businesses to voice their concerns, ideas, and aspirations. By actively engaging with policymakers and stakeholders, we can help shape policies that reduce regulatory burdens, foster innovation, and create opportunities for businesses to thrive. Pro-business policies, such as tax incentives, streamlined licensing processes, and infrastructure improvements, help attract investment, encourage entrepreneurship, and create jobs.
We invite you to join us for our 2nd Annual Eggs & Issues Legislative Breakfast, sponsored by Waste Pro, on Wednesday, August 30th in Pembroke Pines. A number of our local elected officials will be joining us for a discussion and taking questions ahead of the fall committee sessions in Tallahassee. Attendees must register through our events calendar.
It is important to recognize that advocacy is an ongoing effort. The Chamber continues to build relationships, communicate positions through our legislative agenda, and keep you informed about emerging issues and opportunities. The Chamber takes seriously its responsibility for advocacy work that strengthens the collective voice of our business community. Together, we can advocate for policies that support a vibrant business ecosystem, benefiting not only our members but also the entire community.

Marbles Vasquez just turned 6 on June 4. She became a member of our family a year ago and has been one the family’s greatest blessings. From her auntie to her Buela and all that visit our home, immediately they fall in love with her gentle, friendly and lovable nature. Her best friends are her god-sister Ditto and her neighbor Chimi and she enjoys chasing tennis balls and the lizards in our yard, getting long walks, getting a Pup Cup at Starbucks and afternoon naps in one of her three beds (yes, she’s spoiled!) but her favorite location is cuddling in on our sofa next to one of her human family members.
Yours
in Service, Patty Archer Chamber President
