Hurricane Andrew’s Lasting Legacy

On a warm Sunday evening in the summer of 1992, homeowners across South Florida were preparing for a tropical storm in the usual ways. Hardware stores were selling out of plywood, neighbors were helping each other put up storm shutters, and, grocery stores were running out of toilet paper and bottled water. Many were anxious about the storm’s power and size. No one could have envisioned its lasting impact on the lives of so many people.

Hurricane Andrew made landfall just south of Miami at about 5:00 am on Monday, August 24, 1992. The Category 5 hurricane’s intensity and compact size focused its destructive power on a relatively small area, causing catastrophic damage. The storm directly resulted in 65 deaths and left many more injured. It caused more than $27 billion in damage, making it the costliest storm in Florida history. 25,000 homes were destroyed with more than 100,000 more suffering damage.

The hurricane also had a lasting impact on the insurance industry. Many insurers went bankrupt or pulled out of Florida, leading to reforms in how insurance is regulated and provided in hurricane-prone areas. 2022’s Hurricane Ian is having a similar impact on the already fragile Florida insurance market.

Andrew exposed significant weaknesses in building codes, disaster preparedness, and response strategies. In response, Florida significantly overhauled building codes and developed stricter construction standards.

Hurricane Andrew remains a pivotal event in the history of disaster management and preparedness in the United States. The lessons learned from the hurricane led to improved hurricane forecasting, better building practices, and a greater emphasis on emergency preparedness both in Florida and nationwide.

As we head into another hurricane season, remember Andrew and be prepared.

Mother’s Day

Mother's Day is a celebration honoring mothers and motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. The official Mother's Day holiday arose in the 1900s as a result of the efforts of Anna Jarvis. After her mother's death in 1905, Jarvis conceived Mother's Day as a way of honoring the sacrifices mothers made for their children. The first official Mother's Day celebration took place in 1908 at a Methodist church in Grafton, West Virginia, with a larger ceremony in Philadelphia. Through her efforts, President Woodrow Wilson officially designated the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day in 1914.

Easter Extravaganza: Pembroke Pines Doubles the Fun with Two Egg Hunts

Families flocked to Pines Recreation Center and Pembroke Shores Park for an exhilarating Easter Egg Hunt, where over 52,000 hidden eggs awaited eager young treasure hunters. Equipped with baskets, children dashed across the parks, their eyes sparkling with excitement as they gathered as many candy-filled eggs as possible.

Recognizing the growing popularity of this festive event, the City of Pembroke Pines expanded the celebration this year, hosting two separate hunts to double the fun. In addition to the traditional egg hunting, the event featured a vibrant kid's zone complete with bouncy castles, slides, and numerous interactive activities that added to the day's joy.

The festivities also included a talent show where local children showcased their singing and dancing skills, delighting family and friends with their performances. Additional fun activities such as face painting and games allowed kids to enjoy the beautiful South Florida spring weather to the fullest. The highlight for many was a special visit from Mr. Peter Rabbit himself, The Easter Bunny,

who brought smiles and excitement to all in attendance.

Cassandra, a delighted mom, expressed her joy, saying, “What an absolutely delightful day for the children. Everyone had a blast. It’s truly wonderful to live in a city where we can relish in such fabulous events.” Her sentiments echoed the community's appreciation for a well-organized, fun-filled day that celebrated the spirit of Easter and community togetherness.

PEMBROKE PINES TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL KIDS TO PARKS DAY

On May 18th, families in Pembroke Pines are invited to celebrate the 14th Annual National Kids to Parks Day, a nationwide event encouraging outdoor fun and exploration. Hosted by the Pembroke Pines Recreation and Cultural Arts Department, this local celebration will run from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, offering a variety of free activities in several parks throughout the city. Mayor Angelo Castillo encourages local families to take advantage of this special day. Broward Schools Swears in Dr. Howard Hepburn Following Surprise Resignation of Peter Licata

Dr. Peter Licata shocked the Broward Schools community last month by announcing his retirement at a regularly schedule School Board meeting last month. He told the board that he regretted informing them that he was retiring.

"It is with great sadness that I write this letter informing you of my anticipated retirement on December 31, 2024. I communicated to the board on December 17, which is protected from the public record, regarding the status of a medical condition that I have been receiving treatments for. After conferring recently with my doctors, my wife, and my four adult children, it is best that I retire from this incredible role as an educator after 30-plus years here in South Florida," he said.

Licata continued, "I am certainly not being forced out, there is no question about that. I think by everyone's belief that they were surprised by this. This is something that happened over the weekend. Friday I spoke to one of my doctors and just indicated that you've got some choices to make. When I talked to my kids they were very happy.

Having grandkids and not seeing them much is not what it's about. I lost my father at 59, my grandfather at 62, and an older brother at 57. So, I'm 59 and I want to out live my dad and make sure to out live everybody else too," he said.

Licata gave the board almost eight months' notice so that they could search for his replacement. The board took less than a day. In an unprecedented move, they appointed Howard Hepburn, the district's Chief Academic Officer, as the new superintendent effective immediately. Hepburn is from Belle Glade in Palm Beach County and has been one of Licata's key lieutenants since joining the school system in July.

“I thank the School Board for their trust and support as I proudly serve the District in this new capacity,” said Hepburn, “As Superintendent, my focus remains on moving our District to an ‘A’ grade and ensuring all students receive a world-class education. We will continue to prioritize closing achievement gaps, increasing student access to accelerated courses and implementing strategies to support continuous student achievement.”

Dr. Hepburn holds a Bachelor of Science in Science Education and a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from the University of Central Florida, and a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Florida Southern College.

Broward County Hosts High School Voter Drive

Broward County Supervisor of Elections, Joe Scott, led a monthlong voter registration drive at county high schools during April. Representatives from the Supervisor of Elections Office visited every high school in the county and met with students in their classrooms, encouraging them to register.

Students were given paperwork and guidance on how to properly fill it out during history, government and civics classes. Many of the students were already registered via the state of Florida’s driver’s license voter registration program. However, others took advantage of the opportunity to participate in future elections.

“No part of my job is more rewarding than helping young citizens vote for the first time,” said Scott in a video released on the Browardvotes.com, “Here in the state of Florida your sixteenth birthday is an

important milestone. I am not saying that because you can get your drivers’ license, I am saying that because you can register to vote.”

Students who registered will not be able to vote till they reach 18 years old, but will automatically be added to the voter register if they participated in the drive. Many of the students received a keepsake water bottle emblazoned with the @browardvotes logo.

“I was really excited. I can’t wait till I turn 18 to vote in my first election. Hashtag adulting!” said Stoneman Douglas junior Jo.

“When you become an active voter, you will have an impact on who our government leaders are at every level, including city, county, state, and national governments,” commented Scott, “I’ll see you at the polls.”

Celebrating 20 Years of Excellence in Early Education A WORLD OF KNOWLEDGE

Step into the world of early childhood education excellence with Elizabeth Gonzalez, the Founder and Owner of A World of Knowledge. For over two decades, this educational haven has illuminated the path to lifelong learning. Catering to children aged 1 through 6, it stands as a cornerstone of the community, recently celebrating its proud 20th anniversary.

The festivities in February marked this significant milestone, bringing together the original staff from 2004, the school's very first student, alumni spanning two decades, and dedicated teachers who have left an indelible mark on countless young minds. Pony rides, bounce houses, and a petting zoo added to the jubilant atmosphere.

A World of Knowledge owes its enduring success to its passionate staff, who infuse their curriculum with love and care. Under Elizabeth Gonzalez's guidance, this curriculum transcends boundaries, bringing the world

to students through music and play, making learning both interactive and enjoyable.

The curriculum at A World of Knowledge isn't just about teaching; it's about empowering young learners to grasp concepts beyond their years. Mastery of phonemic awareness and reading skills before kindergarten sets the stage for academic success. As pioneers in offering Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (VPK) programs to over 144 students in their inaugural year, the accolades have poured in, placing A World of Knowledge among Florida's top five early learning centers. VPK graduates often enter elementary school with advanced literacy skills, a testament to the effectiveness of the program.

Yours in Service,

Our Siberian Husky, Storm, recently celebrated his 6th birthday in style. We made it a point to support Pembroke Pines businesses on his special birthday. First, we went shopping for his hat & treats at Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming. Then he enjoyed a pup cup at Jeremiah’s Italian Ice of Pembroke Pines and a puppuccino from Starbucks. Storm is a sweet boy who loves saying hi to all his neighbors, especially students waiting for the West Broward HS bus.

Pembroke Pines UPDATE

Iwould first like to thank Pembroke Pines voters citywide for honoring me as your Mayor. My work has begun as our city’s 12th Mayor and the first of Hispanic American origin, but I will be a Mayor for all of our people and have pledged to ensure that the richness of our natural and viewpoint diversity is reflected at City Hall. There will be something on the menu for everyone to enjoy and I hope you will be pleased. I begin this task knowing that I did not earn every vote in our city in the last elections, but I want each of you to know, whether you voted for me or not, that you will always have my vote. Nobody will outwork me. I will be engaged and honest with you even when what I have to say isn’t what you hoped to hear. We will form a family in Pembroke Pines devoted to achieving goals and, together with the entire City Commission and all in City Hall Administration, we will demonstrate that we love the city we call home. These will not be mere words. We will show it in the things we do together. WE are the city that cares, the city that can and the city that does. And it’s time to get our great city moving forward again toward a brighter future.

Please know that I am here to listen, to address and help find solutions for the concerns you bring to my attention. We know what the top issues are in our city because I took the time to ask.

Residents want action on traffic relief, they want a return to recycling and an environmentally friendly trash disposal policy from the county that doesn’t involve incinerators. They want our city to help our own people to access decent, attractive and secure affordable housing units and they trust our city to expand the program we’ve run for decades, which has always been a good neighbor, so that our own kids (young working professionals) seniors and

families can be taken care of. Residents want a city where we take care of our own. They want more police community patrols, they want more police hired, and they want to feel safer. They want better infrastructure to protect them from flooding when it rains hard. They want us to work to keep taxes low. They want a city hall that listens to them, is responsive to them, works for them and puts politics aside. In all these ways, I will not disappoint you and I believe our entire City Commission will rise to that expectation.

That said, I will soon begin a Town Hall tour of our city in which you will be asked to contribute your ideas that can be brought back to City Hall and assembled into a strategic plan moving us forward. This is exceptionally important for the future of our city, and I look forward to having a candid and direct discussion with all of you about it. Details for those meetings are coming soon. I ask that you attend.

Every year, our city holds a Memorial

Day Observance and this year it will be held on Monday, May 27 beginning at 9 am at Fletcher Park, located at 7900 Johnson Street. Please consider attending with friends and family to honor all those in the military who gave their lives in defense of our nation. The Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Honor Guard will present colors, a wreath will be placed, and every attendee given a flower to place in that wreath in honor of a departed loved one. For more information, please check our website at www. ppines.com. Again, I am humbled by the honor of serving as your mayor.

Very Sincerely Yours.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or email me at acastillo@ppines.com.
