May is ALS Awareness Month
I
n May 2011, a father of three was playing basketball with his 14-yearold son. Each time he shot, the ball uncharacteristically fell short of the basket. After just a brief time on the court, the man was much more tired than normal. The following morning he noticed he had trouble buttoning his shirt before work. Over the next month, the father of three saw other strange symptoms; he was much more tired than usual, his joints were sore, and his hand-eye coordination was
progressively getting worse. Two months after that father-son basketball game, Michael Jaillet was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. He progressively lost control of his muscular system until passing away on December 14, 2014. He was 45 years old. May is ALS-Awareness month. Each year 5,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with the disease. The horror of slowly losing control of your body as your mind stays sharp is something no one should endure. There is still no cure and few treatments. Many of us remember the Ice Bucket Challenge in 2014. The viral campaign raised millions of dollars to support the victims of ALS and to fund research. Unfortunately, the need for funding continues today. If you have the means, please support ALS research by donating to the ALS Foundation at ALS.org. With your help, in the future children won’t have to watch their dad fade away. In memory of my brother, Michael.

Saint Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church
Supports Ukrainian Cause By Terry Jaillet
T
here is a small, somewhat nondescript, church built on four acres of land on 100th Ave in Cooper City. You may have driven by and not noticed it. Saint Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church was consecrated and opened its doors in February 1992. The church has served the small but growing South Florida Ukrainian Orthodox community since then. And, it now serves as a lifeline to Ukraine. Since the day Russian tanks began rolling across the border, the congregation at Saint Nicholas’ took action. Church members have raised funds and supplies to help Ukrainians survive the Russian attack. The most vital items have been medical supplies, food, and clothing. In addition to supplies and shelf-stable food, the church raised money to purchase a four-wheel-drive ambulance that is being used to evacuate children and injured and sick people. The incredible generosity of the community has been overwhelming.

communication equipment ▸ Radio food supply kits ▸ Emergency Aid Kits ▸ First Donations ▸ Monetary In addition, there are some specific items that have been requested by Ukrainians in the combat zone. The church’s website, ukrainianorthodox.church includes a list of needed items along with instructions on how to donate both money and materials.

¿Alguien a quien amas sufre de depresión? No sufras en silencio, defiéndete.
L
Tratamiento no invasivo, no farmacológico. 3. Más de 2,5 millones de tratamientos realizados. 4. La mayoría de las personas tratadas experimentan mejoras significativas y duraderas. 5. Ampliamente cubierto por el seguro.

The agency, which is focused on keeping brothers and sisters together, and, strengthening families received a $25,000 Community Impact Grant from New York Life (NYL) and additional matching funds from the Craig Zinn Automotive Group. “The court is one of our main fixtures on campus and is enjoyed daily by many of the youth we serve,” said Children’s Harbor President and CEO Tiffani Dhooge. “Not only does the court serve as an athletic space, but it is also one of the many keys utilized by our therapists to unlock traumas in the youth we serve. It’s a comfortable setting for them to have open discussions so that they may begin to heal from their trauma.” “We are grateful to New York Life for their continued support over the years of Children’s Harbor, an organization that is near and dear

Children’s Harbor provides nurturing, family group homes for teens in the foster care system on a beautiful eight-acre campus in Pembroke Pines, FL. These loving homes allow brothers and sisters and teen mothers and their babies to stay together during a turbulent time in their young lives. Children’s Harbor also helps prevent child abuse through our Family Strengthening Program. The initial release of the annual forecast was produced by Professor Michael M. Bell and Research Scientist Philip J. Hurricane Season Begins June 1st BE PREPARED!
A
tlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1 through November 30 each year. It is no secret to South Florida residents that hurricanes are dangerous and can cause major damage. Storm surge, wind damage, and flooding can wreak havoc on property and pose major threats to people and pets. According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the best way to minimize those risks is to be prepared.
Make an Emergency Plan
Make sure everyone in your household knows and understands your hurricane plans. Include the office, kids’ daycare, and anywhere else you frequent in your hurricane plans. Ensure your business has a continuity plan to continue operating when disaster strikes. Determine the best way to protect yourself,

family, and pets in the event of a major storm.
Recognize Warnings and Alerts
Stay informed during a hurricane threat by monitoring news channels, and paying attention to emergency information and alerts. Download the FEMA app to receive real-time alerts from the National Weather Service.
Keep and Protect Important Documents
Make sure your insurance policies and personal documents are up to date. It is a good idea to have both digital and physical copies of these important documents, especially if you need to evacuate.
Make a Hurricane Kit
One of the best ways to prepare for a potential storm is to prepare a hurricane kit. A basic emergency supply kit could include:

HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS
Five Things Every Homeowner Should Do BEFORE HURRICANE SEASON
H
urricane Season starts next month. This year’s season is expected to be “above average.”, Most South Floridians have experienced the rush to “get things done” when a major storm is on the way. There are a few things, however, that homeowners can do ahead of time to make that storm watch period a little bit less stressful.
1. Prune trees and clear yard debris
Hurricane-force winds can convert almost anything into a missile, capable of inflicting damage to homes, cars, and people. High winds can pick things like coconuts or dead branches and launch them at windows or people. It is a good idea to prune back dead branches and tree limbs that overhang homes. Dead and diseased plants should also be removed.
2. Repair windows, doors & roofing
In severe weather, your roof is your first line of defense, and a roof in need of repair is exposed to heavy winds. Examine the flashing for leaks and look for loose roof tiles that may be prone to wind and rain. Make sure it's ready to withstand severe winds and make any necessary repairs. The same goes for windows and doors.
4. Clean and inspect drains, downspouts & gutters
3. Have a plan to install hurricane shutters
5. Check Your Insurance Policies
Installing hurricane shutters prior to the arrival of a major storm can be a challenge. Contractors and handymen become booked around the clock during a hurricane warning. It is a good idea to prearrange the installation of hurricane shutters prior to a storm warning. If you plan to install them yourself, make sure you have the appropriate tools and ladders needed. Home improvement stores frequently sell out quickly!

Clogged or damaged gutters and downspouts are one of the most common sources of water damage to homes during a storm. Water that does not drain away from your home may flood it. Make sure they are secured in place and free of any debris.
Review your insurance documents to make sure you have the right amount and right types of coverage. Ask your insurance agent if your policy covers replacement costs or cash value. Also, if you are in a flood plain, make sure your flood insurance is up to date. A few, simple things, done before hurricane season will make it a breeze if a big storm comes!

THE DONOWAY CENTER Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation for Advanced and Oligo-Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer
If you are being treated for advanced or oligometastatic pancreatic cancer you may want to contact Dr. Robert Donoway at ATLAS ONCOLOGY in Hollywood, Florida. Dr Donoway is using multi-modality therapy combining Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation with chemo-immunoradio therapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients from around the world after they have stopped responding to standard of care therapy and have been left with few options for further treatment. With over 32 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in south Florida, Dr Donoway recognized that because of late diagnosis, up to 85% of patients treated for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis. This fact limited the benefit many patients might receive from pancreatic surgery, which is problematic as surgery has been long held to be the only reproduceable therapy for cure; whereas in reality surgery is currently more likely Palliative in almost 80% of the cases. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating NanoKnife surgery with chemotherapy and now supplemented with immunotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially when compared to chemotherapy alone. Dr Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex cases. During the past decade, patients from around the world have traveled to benefit from
this groundbreaking treatment by Dr Donoway, which is FDA approved. Dr Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, Breast, and sarcomas, using NanoKnife Surgery based on its FDA approved guidelines. Patients experience a brief recovery, which means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating Pancreatic Ca. The treatment history been largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 10% five year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein‘s definition of insanity.” Dr Donoway is involved in ongoing research in identifying the best chemo-immuno therapy and sequencing to be used along with Pancreatic nanoKnife/IRE . Dr Donoway states, “the results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over nine years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have lived a little over a year, and so this technique opens a whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” Dr Donoway has presented his results of pancreatic ablation at the recent annual meeting of the American Pancreatic Association. Broward County Hosts
High School Voter Drive By Zach McDaniels
B
roward County Supervisor of Elections, Joe Scott, led a month-long voter registration drive at county high schools during April. Representatives from the Supervisor of Elections Office visited every high school in the county and met with students in their classrooms, encouraging them to register. Students were given paperwork and guidance on how to properly fill it out during history, government and civics classes. Many of the students were already registered via the state of Florida’s driver’s license voter registration program. However, others took advantage of the opportunity to participate in future elections. “No part of my job is more rewarding than helping young citizens vote for the first time,” said Scott in a video released on the Browardvotes.com, “Here in the state of Florida your sixteenth birthday is an
important milestone. I am not saying that because you can get your drivers’ license, I am saying that because you can register to vote.” Students who registered will not be able to vote till they reach 18 years old, but will automatically be added to the voter register if they participated in the drive. Many of the students received a keepsake water bottle emblazoned with the @browardvotes logo. “I was really excited. I can’t wait till I turn 18 to vote in my first election. Hashtag adulting!” said Stoneman Douglas junior Jo. “When you become an active voter, you will have an impact on who our government leaders are at every level, including city, county, state, and national governments,” commented Scott, “I’ll see you at the polls.”

A Mother’s Day Gift for Mastectomy Survivors
B
By Pauline Marinho
razilian Touch Clinic produces a variety of realistic nipples intended for women who have undergone unilateral , bilateral mastectomies or breast lift scars. My passion is to give my clients the most realistic results. After the doctor gives you shape, our job is to give you custom made areola reconstruction using the best ink, needless and machine on the market. For Mother’s Day we are giving away our 3D Areola Reconstruction Tattoo. These custom made areolas are hand-made by Pauline Marinho and her team. We help women feel whole again, be satisfied with their appearance and feel comfortable and confident. What is an Areola Reconstruction Tattoo? Areola Reconstruction Tattoos involve several cosmetic procedures to make changes around or on the areola. The tattoo ink alters the appearance of the areola and nipple by adding a realistic nipple as well as changing the shape or color. After breast surgery, many women undergo cosmetic procedures to regain what was removed or altered. The visual regeneration of your areolas brings the appearance closer to your pre-surgical look. There are a number of things people should know prior to booking a consultation to discuss the areola reconstruction. Who is eligible to get an Areola Reconstruction Tattoo ? Many people believe you can only get an areola reconstruction tattoo if you have breast reconstruction. This is not true. Anyone who wants to improve the general appearance of their breasts can have this kind of tattoo. Any surgery that leaves the areola intact may leave scarring or a misshapen areola. An areola and nipple’s size, shape, and color can be easily evened out by tattooing over the area. Know the difference between these terms When you first learn of an areola reconstruction tattoo, you may hear different terms for it. Some common terms are listed down below: • Areola Micro-Pigmentation • 3D Nipple Tattoo • Natural Areola Tattoo • Nipple Tattoo Reconstruction • Areola Derma Pigmentation Tattoo These terms are all similar ways to describe the procedure. They all involved introducing ink into the dermis skin layer using needle. At Brazilian Touch Clinic we take the time to discuss the best options for your areola pigmentation. It is entirely safe to tattoo the areola and nipple You may wonder if it is safe to tattoo around the areola. Tattooing the areola and nipple is very safe. You will be given post care instructions to insure the best and healthiest result. Be sure you choose a licensed artist that utilizes proper safety, sterilization and hygiene practices. B r a z i l i a n To u c h Aesthetics Clinic take pride in using quality pigments and products for each and every procedure. You and your tech will carefully select your color pallet together for the most natural and realistic look. Areola micro-pigmentation done with a qualified, experienced technician will give you the procedure needed to complete your individual needs. Is it painful to have your breast tattooed? This is a common question and the answer is that most people are very comfortable with our topical anesthetics. Our team will use them to ease any discomfort that may occur. There may be some slight discomfort depending on the specific surgery, but it’s typically mild. Are there any side effects associated with Areola Reconstruction Tattoos? The skin may feel sensitive or tight after you get a tattoo, and there may be some swelling and redness. It is normal during healing to flake, look patchy or feel dry. Make sure you take care of your Areola Reconstruction Tattoo After your tattoo, the artist will apply a dressing to it and give you proper explicit directions in the care of your procedure. Generally, new areola tattoos heal in 10-14 days, although there is no set timeline. Your skin condition will ultimately determine how fast it heals. How long will the areola pigmentation Last? Generally, all tattoos will fade to some degree and may need touch-ups. We use cosmetic pigment colors and over time some fading may occur, at which time you may opt to have your colors refreshed. What is the price of an Areola Reconstruction Tattoo? Costs differ from artist to artist when it comes to areola micro-pigmentation. Your technician typically has a set price but each case is subject to the consultation and circumstances of the individual. Additionally, the initial price usually includes the first touch-up. But for Mother’s Day Brazilian Touch will give a free procedure for all the mothers that contact us in May. Are you ready to book your appointment for your Areola Tattoo? For those looking to create natural looking areolas and nipples, Brazilian Touch Clinic provides an option. If you or someone you love need this service, book an appointment today. Fighting for Broward Families
T
By Senate Democratic Leader Lauren Book
his past January, I packed up my 5-yearold twins and headed to Tallahassee for the 2022 legislative session to be a voice for Broward County. For those of you I have not had the pleasure to meet, I am Lauren Book, your State Senator and the Senate’s Democratic Leader. As a working mom, fighting for Broward families is one of my top priorities. This year, I was able to pass meaningful legislation to benefit families in our local community and across the state, including two long-standing priorities I’ve held since first being elected to the Senate in 2016 while pregnant: a sales tax exemption on diapers that will save families hundreds of dollars a year, and expanding Medicaid to cover prescribed breast milk for medically at-risk babies. In addition, I passed legislation to combat digital sex crimes – making sure the law has caught up with technology, our use of cell phones, and the Internet.
Budget Victories for Pembroke Pines This year, I fought to bring home more than 24 million in taxpayers’ dollars to be reinvested back into Broward County. These funds will go towards hardening our infrastructure against storms and climate change and expanding healthcare initiatives for vulnerable populations. My office has secured over $1 million to maintain the fire training facility, create a special needs inclusive park and playground, and install flood management pumps in Pembroke Pines. These pumps are designed to inhibit water from flowing out of the everglades and into the city, keeping our neighborhoods dry and natural water system clean. Despite legislative leadership’s continued focus on passing controversial “culture war” bills that garnered national attention this year, my focus remains squarely on addressing critical issues facing Floridians. I was proud to lead the Senate Democrats in a bipartisan call for a Special Session to address the current property insurance crisis, which needs immediate attention to protect Floridians’ property and their pocketbooks.

ear Readers, I am deeply honored and humbled to have been chosen to be a 2022 inductee into the Broward County Senior Hall of Fame. For 38 years, the Area Agency on Aging of Broward County has honored seniors for their contributions to the community through this recognition. When I was told, I actually had to catch my breath. I do what I do out of love for my community, concern regarding difficult issues and because I honestly like helping. I encourage our youth to get involved and give of their time. I’m glad my life has taken me in this direction Throughout the month of May, Mental Health America, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), and other mental health organizations across the country organize events, webinars, and more to improve mental health access across the country. At our May Commission Meeting, I will issue a proclamation recognizing May as Mental Health Awareness Month. In the Proclamation, I strongly urge the citizens in our community to commit to increasing and understanding mental health illnesses, reducing stigma and discrimination, and promoting appreciation and accessible services for all people with mental illnesses. If you or a loved one is experiencing mental health issues, please visit the resources we’ve posted on the city’s website at www.ppines. com.
