May is ALS Awareness Month

n May 2011, a father of three was playing basketball with his 14-yearold son. Each time he shot, the ball uncharacteristically fell short of the basket. After just a brief time on the court, the man was much more tired than normal. The following morning he noticed he had trouble buttoning his shirt before work. Over the next month, the father of three saw other strange symptoms; he was much more tired than usual, his joints were sore, and his hand-eye coordination was

progressively getting worse. Two months after that father-son basketball game, Michael Jaillet was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. He progressively lost control of his muscular system until passing away on December 14, 2014. He was 45 years old. May is ALS-Awareness month. Each year 5,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with the disease. The horror of slowly losing control of your body as your mind stays sharp is something no one should endure. There is still no cure and few treatments. Many of us remember the Ice Bucket Challenge in 2014. The viral campaign raised millions of dollars to support the victims of ALS and to fund research. Unfortunately, the need for funding continues today. If you have the means, please support ALS research by donating to the ALS Foundation at ALS.org. With your help, in the future children won’t have to watch their dad fade away. In memory of my brother, Michael.

Saint Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church

Supports Ukrainian Cause By Terry Jaillet

here is a small, somewhat nondescript, church built on four acres of land on 100th Ave in Cooper City. You may have driven by and not noticed it. Saint Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church was consecrated and opened its doors in February 1992. The church has served the small but growing South Florida Ukrainian Orthodox community since then. And, it now serves as a lifeline to Ukraine. Since the day Russian tanks began rolling across the border, the congregation at Saint Nicholas’ took action. Church members have raised funds and supplies to help Ukrainians survive the Russian attack. The most vital items have been medical supplies, food, and clothing. In addition to supplies and shelf-stable food, the church raised money to purchase a four-wheel-drive ambulance that is being used to evacuate children and injured and sick people. The incredible generosity of the community has been overwhelming.

Children’s Harbor Goes Full Court

hildren’s Harbor, a nationally accredited nonprofit agency with a mission to provide a safe harbor and support to at-risk children, youth, and families is about to get a full-court basketball court. The agency, which is focused on keeping brothers and sisters together, and, strengthening families received a $25,000 Community Impact Grant from New York Life (NYL) and additional matching funds from the Craig Zinn Automotive Group. “The court is one of our main fixtures on campus and is enjoyed daily by many of the youth we serve,” said Children’s Harbor President and CEO Tiffani Dhooge. “Not only does the court serve as an athletic space, but it is also one of the many keys utilized by our therapists to unlock traumas in the youth we serve. roward County Supervisor of Elections, Joe Scott, led a month-long voter registration drive at county high schools during April. Representatives from the Supervisor of Elections Office visited every high school in the county and met with students in their classrooms, encouraging them to register. Students were given paperwork and guidance on how to properly fill it out during history, government and civics classes. Many of the students were already registered via the state of Florida’s driver’s license voter registration program. However, others took advantage of the opportunity to participate in future elections. “No part of my job is more rewarding than helping young citizens vote for the first time,” said Scott in a video released on the Browardvotes.com, “Here in the state of Florida your sixteenth birthday is an

important milestone. I am not saying that because you can get your drivers’ license, I am saying that because you can register to vote.” Students who registered will not be able to vote till they reach 18 years old, but will automatically be added to the voter register if they participated in the drive. Fighting for Broward Families

his past January, I packed up my 5-yearold twins and headed to Tallahassee for the 2022 legislative session to be a voice for Broward County. For those of you I have not had the pleasure to meet, I am Lauren Book, your State Senator and the Senate’s Democratic Leader. As a working mom, fighting for Broward families is one of my top priorities. This year, I was able to pass meaningful legislation to benefit families in our local community and across the state, including two long-standing priorities I’ve held since first being elected to the Senate in 2016 while pregnant: a sales tax exemption on diapers that will save families hundreds of dollars a year, and expanding Medicaid to cover prescribed breast milk for medically at-risk babies. In addition, I passed legislation to combat digital sex crimes – making sure the law has caught up with technology, our use of cell phones, and the Internet.

Budget Victories for Pembroke Pines This year, I fought to bring home more than 24 million in taxpayers’ dollars to be reinvested back into Broward County. These funds will go towards hardening our infrastructure against storms and climate change and expanding healthcare initiatives for vulnerable populations. My office has secured over $1 million to maintain the fire training facility, create a special needs inclusive park and playground, and install flood management pumps in Pembroke Pines. These pumps are designed to inhibit water from flowing out of the everglades and into the city, keeping our neighborhoods dry and natural water system clean. Despite legislative leadership’s continued focus on passing controversial “culture war” bills that garnered national attention this year, my focus remains squarely on addressing critical issues facing Floridians. I was proud to lead the Senate Democrats in a bipartisan call for a Special Session to address the current property insurance crisis, which needs immediate attention to protect Floridians’ property and their pocketbooks.

For 38 years, the Area Agency on Aging of Broward County has honored seniors for their contributions to the community through this recognition. When I was told, I actually had to catch my breath. I do what I do out of love for my community, concern regarding difficult issues and because I honestly like helping. I encourage our youth to get involved and give of their time. I’m glad my life has taken me in this direction Throughout the month of May, Mental Health America, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), and other mental health organizations across the country organize events, webinars, and more to improve mental health access across the country. At our May Commission Meeting, I will issue a proclamation recognizing May as Mental Health Awareness Month. In the Proclamation, I strongly urge the citizens in our community to commit to increasing and understanding mental health illnesses, reducing stigma and discrimination, and promoting appreciation and accessible services for all people with mental illnesses. Hurricane preparedness is essential to all of us living in South Florida which is why we provide an extensive and comprehensive section regarding hurricanes, preparation, and resources on the city’s website at www. ppines.com/hurricane called Pembroke Pines Prepared. There will also continually be helpful information posted on the city’s social media on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter throughout the season and year, and during National Hurricane Preparedness Week. The Mayor’s Annual Chess Challenge is back in Pembroke Pines and being held on Saturday, May 14, 2022, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Pembroke Lakes Golf Club 19 Restaurant, located at 10500 Taft Street. This is the last chess challenge being held throughout Broward County as part of a free and friendly series of chess meet-ups in over 20 different cities created to draw attention to the benefits of chess in both the academic environment and in our community.
