Let’s Celebrate Earth Day

E

very year, on April 22nd, people around the world recognize the importance of preserving and protecting our natural environment. Earth Day, as we call it today, was proposed by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson and founded in 1970.

Since then, it has evolved from a day for teachers to focus on nature to a global rally day for environmentalists.

Locally, Earth Day is a great day to celebrate the wonders of South Florida. Some of the best beaches in the world are just a few miles away. The Everglades, which is both an exciting natural refuge to visit and a critically important ecosystem, is right in our back yard. Just off shore, there are miles of coral reefs full of fish and wildlife. Preserving the beauty and splendor of our natural environment is critical for the continued enjoyment of this wonderful community.

This year, let’s celebrate Earth Day by taking a step back from our fast-paced digital world and recognizing the splendor of the environment around us. You could visit the Long Key Nature Center in Davie, take an airboat ride through the Everglades, dip your toes in the surf, or simply spend a few hours at one our wonderful local parks. n April 22, area residents will have an opportunity to celebrate as the City of Pembroke Pines turns 57. The City is marking the occasion with the Pines Day event. The full day of free family fun will be held from noon-6pm, on the grounds of the new Photos: Residents enjoy 2016 Pines Day Pembroke Pines City Center, 601 City Center Way. “There will be something for everyone at Pines Day,” said Francie Novo, special events coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines “Pines Day is a wonderful time for all of the residents to come together and celebrate. Come for a few hours or spend the whole day.”

The event will celebrate the city’s birthday, as well as Earth Day, Kindness and the opening of the new City Center.

Some of the highlights of the event include: ▸▸ Main Stage Performances – Enjoy main stage performances from noon6pm. Approximately 500 children will have an opportunity to perform in 15 minute intervals. ▸▸ Kids Konnection Expo – From noon-6pm, visit with businesses that sell kid-friendly products. ▸▸ Royal Court Pageant – At 1:30pm, join in the fun at the Royal Court Pageant, when children ages 3 to 16 will compete for the title of princess and Queen. Winners will be judged on their poise and personality.

Participants must be Pembroke Pines residents. Winners will be selected in each age category – Little Miss Sweetheart (3-5), Young Jr. Miss (6-8), Junior Miss (9-12) and Miss (13-16). Applications are available at www.ppines.com.

n April 22, area residents will have an opportunity to celebrate as the City of Pembroke Pines turns 57. The City is marking the occasion with the Annual Pines Day event at the new Pembroke Pines City Center. Pines Day will be filled with activities for the whole family, including the Little Miss Sweetheart and Miss Pembroke Pines (Royal Court) contests. Applications are due by 4pm on April 20.

Sponsored by the City of Pembroke Pines Recreation and Cultural Arts Department, the Miss Pembroke Pines contest is open to residents of Pembroke Pines between the ages of 6-16. Applicants must provide proof of residency, as well as a copy of a birth certificate. They must also attend a dress rehearsal.

There will be three categories: Miss Pembroke Pines (ages 13-16), Junior Miss Pembroke Pines (ages 9-12) and Young Junior Miss Pembroke Pines (ages 6-8).

The girls will be judged on poise and personality. Each contestant will answer an onstage question.

Students Will Find Ways to Give Back at the Annual Teen Volunteer Expo COMMUNITY NEWS

any teens are looking for volunteer opportunities as a way to earn service hours for school or simply to give back to the community. Since 2006, the Teen Volunteer Expo has offered them an opportunity to connect with a wide variety of local organizations that need their help. The event, which is co-sponsored by Pembroke Pines Charter High School, will be held on May 6, from 1pm-3pm, at the Broward County Southwest Regional Library, located at 16835 Sheridan Street in Pembroke Pines.

Over 500 students are expected to attend the Expo, which is like “speed dating” for volunteer work.

On one day, in one place, students will be able to match their interests with an organization. Within two hours, students can sample between 25-40 different organizations, both large and small. They will have an opportunity to talk to the people who manage the organization’s volunteer programs, as well as other teens who have volunteered for the organization.

Most of the organizations that participated last year are expected to return.

They include: Museum of Discovery and Science, Broward County Teen Court,

8th Annual Taste of Pines Is a Success COMMUNITY NEWS

osted by the City of Pembroke Pines, the 8th Annual Taste of Pines was a huge success and all for a good cause. The event raised awareness and funds for the City of Pembroke Pines Charter School System, which allows Pembroke Pines children to begin their education in a Pembroke Pines Charter elementary school, study in a regional library, graduate from the high school, and continue their education at Broward College and/or Florida International University.

Taste of Pines was held at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center. The crowd enjoyed unlimited samples of food from area restaurants, wines and beers from around the world, and the music of the Patrick Lopez and Xpresso Band.

“Tastes of Pines was a great evening out for adults who enjoyed sampling foods, desserts, waters, wines and beers from all around the world,” said Francie Novo, Special Events Coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines. “In addition to raising funds for our Pembroke Pines Charter School Foundation, this event introduces attendees to new and established Pembroke Pines restaurants.”

To raise additional funds, the City of Pembroke Pines Charter School System held the Mayor’s Golf Tournament on March 24, as well as the 7th Annual Pill Box Pharmacies Flamingo Strut 5K and Kids Fun Run on April 2.

ily Mazurek proved that you are never too old to enter a pageant.

At 66 years young, Mazurek was crowned the winner at the 2016 Lady Pines Pageant.

This year’s event will be held on April 11, at 12:30pm, and organizers are looking any Pembroke Pines residents interested in 2016 Lady Pines’ contestants entering. The application deadline is April 7.

“It is a great opportunity to build self-confidence and meet new people,” said Helen Daniels, Recreation Division Supervisor for the City of Pembroke Pines. “The winner will also have bragging rights to the prestigious title of Lady Pines.”

The pageant will be held at the Pembroke Pines Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center Campus in Pembroke Pines. Women ages 60 and older are eligible to enter. Contestants will be judged on style, charisma and personality. Last year’s contestants ranged in age from 61 to 86.

They will be asked two prescreened questions, plus a surprise question. Last year, some of the questions included: How do you feel about the quality of television

shows today and how would you change it? If you received a million dollars, for which city project would this money be used? Describe the most significant moment in your life.

Natalie Belmonte Great Yards Award Contest Returns SECTION HEAD COMMUNITY NEWS

f you have a great yard, now is the time to enter it in the 5th Annual Natalie Belmonte Great Yards Award Contest, which is open to all Pembroke Pines homeowners/multi-family owners. Neighbors can also nominate another resident’s property (with their consent). The contest promotes quality landscaping within Pembroke Pines. It also honors Natalie Belmonte who tragically lost her life in 2011. She was a longtime resident of the Pembroke Pines, who loved nature and butterflies. The deadline for applications is April 13.

Five winners will be selected, including one from each of the four City Commission Districts and one at large. The Landscape Advisory Board will judge the yards in April. The winning residents will receive their awards at the May Commission meeting, in the spirit of Mother’s Day and to honor Natalie Belmonte during her birthday month.

The contest will consist of five components worth 20 points each. These areas will be added together to reach the final score for the property. All entries must attain a minimum score of 70 to be eligible. The highest score per district will receive the award.

Karen Nelson has been working on her yard and plans to enter it in the contest this year. “I am very proud of my yard,” said Nelson. “I want my house and neighborhood to look nice. The contest gave me some incentive to do it.”

The five components are as follows: ▸▸ Butterfly component: This area judges the preservation of all stages of a

butterfly’s life. It should supply food and shelter with the proper selection of plants, including: host plants, caterpillar food plants, butterfly nectar plants, and an area that provides about half a day’s worth of sunlight. ▸▸ Design and function: This area judges the overall design, use of texture, compatibility of materials, continuity, balance, and the overall function of the landscape in correlation with the use of the property. ▸▸ Maintenance: The focus on this section will be the overall view of the property’s landscape maintenance. Are turf areas mowed? Are planter beds kept weed free and edged? Is mulching and fertilization kept up? ▸▸ Florida Friendly Value: This section judges the selection and use of plants that have similar water demands. Mulching techniques will also be observed. ▸▸ Use of Hardscapes: This section judges the use of non-living additions to finish a landscape, such as fountains, ponds, statues, boulders, decks, mulch, stones, etc.

The Frank Opens Inaugural Exhibit - “What’s Wonderful” COMMUNITY NEWS

T

he Frank is a two-story art gallery named after Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis for his decades-long commitment to the cultural arts. Its mission is to foster connection and promote curiosity through innovative programming, and to offer the community a way to see art as part of daily life. On April 27, from 6pm to 9pm, the public is invited to a reception to celebrate the Frank’s grand opening and inaugural exhibition, “What’s Wonderful,” curated by The Frank’s Chief Curator Jill Slaughter. The public can tour The Frank; view the exhibit; see interactive art on the plaza; and enjoy live entertainment, hors d’oeuvres and beverages.

The exhibit, which runs through May, looks at the broad interpretation of wonder by 15 artists - each with a singular version of “What’s Wonderful.” Throughout three different exhibition spaces, paintings, sculptures, site-specific installations and pop art prompt visitors to determine if “what’s wonderful” is a question or a statement. It provides opportunities for people to not only see art, but to interact with each other and self-reflect.

“We are showcasing works from artists of multiple disciplines at The Frank,” said Slaughter. “Art has to be more than an aesthetic. It has to represent something visceral, something that will cause you to put down your electronics to come out and see it.”

Ruben Ubiera’s “urban pop,” a careful blend of graffiti art and surrealism. Other artists featured in the exhibition include Virginia Fifield, Flore, TD Gillispie, Henning Haupt, Frank Hyder, Marcus Kenney, Monique Lazard, Kerry Phillips, Lori Practico, Peter Symons, Valeria Yamamoto and Robert Zuckerman.

In the first Frank site-specific installation, “People of Pines,” painter Carrie Smith will unveil 16 portraits

of randomly selected Pembroke Pines residents, each unmasked by her decisive exploration of the subject’s identity and state of mind. A continuous soundscape of Pembroke Pines residents will play, whispering answers to life questions that were made available to the project participants, such as “What qualities made you marry your spouse?” and “How did you decide what to do with your life?” Smith worked on the series for more than a year.

In the third space gallery wall, located on the second floor, a variety of original work by Friends & Stars, Inc. will be on display. Friends & Stars, Inc. is an arts program expressly designed for an all-inclusive special needs population. It is open to the public.

On the City Center plaza, guests can play on a custom ping pong table, created by The Urban Conga, a Tampa-based design firm focused on creating community activity and social interaction through play. They can also view the new Gateway Sculpture, designed by Brooks + Scarpa Architects. The sculpture and landscape elements frame the pedestrian gateway into the new public plaza.

Q&A: Ready for a run? There’s much to know before you go.

According to recent statistics, U.S. participation in running and jogging has grown 70% over Farah Tejpar, MD the past decade.

Cleveland Clinic Florida In 2016, it was Sports Health Specialist estimated that over 60 million Americans were involved in the sport. The number of people running in non-traditional events like warrior and color runs has increased dramatically in the past five years.

Running properly is of utmost importance, regardless of whether you’ve been running for years or just getting started, or if you’re running just for recreation or are serious about the sport and have goals to break personal bests. And sometimes it requires some trial and error to figure out what will work best for you. We asked Farah Tejpar, MD, sports health specialist, to answer key questions about running, and how runners of all types can prepare.

Q. Is running good for everyone?

A. Running is a great way to boost your metabolism, burn calories and improve your cardiovascular health.

But it’s important to run with proper technique and incorporate warm up and recovery exercises.

Q. Are there different types of runners?

A. Runners can fall into two groups.

• Endurance athletes who are always training for their next marathon or striving to improve their performance • Weekend warriors who enjoy running for recreation and fitness Q. What are typical running injuries?

A. Runners typically present with overuse injuries. Overuse injuries result from increased demand over time on the muscles, bones and tendons.

Q. Is running bad for your joints?

A. Running can help with weight maintenance and weight loss. This actually decreases the load on your joints and helps to prevent arthritis.

Q. How can a sports health specialist help?

A. During your consultation, a sports health physician will address structural and functional issues that can lead to injuries. These include your individual capabilities; such as muscle strength and flexibility, as well as external factors; such as environmental conditions, running surfaces and shoe wear.

Since he joined Angel Flight a year ago, he has flown a total of 13 missions – 11 as pilot in command and two with his friend, Rick Abin. Some of the missions have included flying a teenager and her mother from Jacksonville to Knoxville for treatment; an elderly man with Stage IV metastatic melanoma, along with his wife, from Georgia to Fort Myers; and a woman with breast cancer from Port St Lucie to Tampa.

Panther Run Elementary Has Principal of the Year Finalist

his month, Broward County Public Schools will select the 2018 Principal of the Year from among six finalists.

Elaine Saef, principal of Panther Run Elementary School, is one of them. This is the third time she has been a finalist for Principal of the Year.

In 1989, Saef began her career with Broward County Public Schools as a fourth grade teacher at Pembroke Lakes Elementary School. Since then, she has held a variety of positions before becoming principal of Panther Run Elementary ten years ago.

Her philosophy is student and teacher centered. She firmly believes that all students can and will learn if we teach them.

She is known for creating and Elaine Saef implementing programs and activities that motivate and inspire teachers to educate students to achieve their highest potential.

“I believe it is our job as educators to teach all students,” said Saef. “We need to find the way a child learns – visually, auditorily, tactily, technologically, etc. - and meet their individual needs.”

When Saef became principal, her number one priority was to create and foster

a positive school culture of caring, kindness and nurturing in which all students, parents, and staff could flourish, learn and grow. She created PIF-WIAMAD, which stands for “Pay It Forward!” and “Who I Am Makes A Difference!” She challenges the students and loves to be challenged in return. For example, after students have met reading and charitable fundraising goals, she has kissed a horse and been slimed, silly stringed and duct taped to a wall.

“This philosophy has proven to be effective in developing a caring culture in our school and community,” said Saef. ‘“Pay it forward!’ or paying it forward refers to repaying the good deeds one has received by doing good things for other unrelated people. In this way, we hope to establish an ever growing, branching, organic flow of generosity amongst our fellow humans. ‘Who I Am Makes A Difference’ is a philosophy that we all are important and make a difference in the lives of others by our actions, words, feelings and just being who we are. It is our job to make the world a better place than we grew up in and to make a positive difference.”

She believes in full inclusion. In her tenure as principal, the school’s Exceptional Student Education population has grown to include specialized program classes in Autism, Varying Exceptionalities, Intellectually Disabled, brain injuries, Speech and Language. Today, it is one of the number one choices for McKay Scholarships and ESE reassignments in the District.

In an effort to provide open and clear communication, she designed and maintains a web page. She also uses Parent Links, Twitter, marquee messages, weekly “Panther Prints” newsletters and more. All of this gives students a safe place to learn on-line and parents information about the school.

This is not the first time Saef has been recognized for her efforts. She was a Caliber Award Finalist for Principal of the Year (2016); finalist for Broward County’s ACCLAIM Principal of the Year Award (2011); recipient of the Broward Alliance of Black School Educators Educational Leadership Award (2017) and more. In addition, she will serve as President of Broward Principals and Assistants Association from 2017-2019.

PPCHS Students Participate in National Society of Arts & Letters Competition

or the first time, photography students from Pembroke Pines Charter High School competed in the Second Annual High School National Society of Arts and Letters Competition recently held at Florida Atlantic University. Although the students did not win one of the eight prizes awarded, they gained invaluable experience at the competition.

“This was a fantastic and educational experience for all of us,” said Faran Fagen, PPCHS Newspaper and Yearbook teacher, whose students are also taught

by PPCHS AP photography teacher Lorraine Vazquez. “Our students had many unique and eye-opening experiences at the NSAL competition.”

PPCHS student Megan Fraga was selected for participation in an instructional demo, which highlighted the importance of utilizing a variety of angles in lighting to create a desired effect. Each of the students received a certificate of participation. They also had the opportunity to learn from fine-art photographer and photojournalist Fred Conrad during a one-on-one critique session.

Conrad has been shooting for The New York Times since 1977. He retired from The Times in 2014, but still continues to work on assignment for the newspaper. He has photographed a wide variety of subjects, including the Iran-Iraq War in 1984, the Kurdish crisis in 1991, the conflict in Croatia and Kosovo and the recovery and reconstruction of the World Trade Center.

The NSAL Florida East Coast Chapter developed and rolled out the high school photography pilot for the 2015-16 academic year. Since its inception, the pilot program has focused on the area of photography. In coming years, the competition area of interest may vary, but the discipline will come from within the visual and performing arts and literature categories.

“School Supplies on the Move” Mobile Unit Visits Pines Lakes Elementary

roward Education Foundation established Tools for Schools Broward, so teachers from Title 1 schools could have access to free school supplies for their students and classroom twice a year. The Tools for Schools “School Supplies on the Move” mobile unit recently made a stop at Pines Lakes Elementary in Pembroke Pines, giving teachers an opportunity to “shop” for donated school supplies worth thousands of dollars.

Teachers will use the supplies to complete a variety of assignments, including project-based learning and hands-on science activities. Very often, the teachers use their own money to purchase these supplies.

“Pines Lakes Elementary school students and staff are very appreciative of the Mobile Unit visiting our school,” said Intern Principal Cormic Priester. “Our students will greatly benefit from the gracious donations. Our teachers were thrilled about the school supplies and look forward to using them in their classrooms.”

Tools for Schools Broward is a collaborative effort between Kids in Need Foundation, the Broward County School District, local businesses and community volunteers. During the past academic year, Tools for Schools Broward donated more than $1.1 million worth of school supplies to Broward County Title I School teachers and their students. More than 9,500 teachers and students have benefited from Tools for Schools Broward since its inception.

“There are teachers at some schools that cannot make it to our Tools for

Schools retail center in Pompano Beach,” said Christina Fischer, Chair of Broward Education Foundation. “For their convenience, we mobilized our mobile unit to

deliver much needed classroom supplies to those schools. Access to essential school supplies leads to increased student self-esteem, which enhances learning in the classroom. It’s a win-win for underserved students and their teachers.”

Monetary donations, as well as school supplies, are always needed. A $50 cash donation will fill an entire backpack with school supplies. The items that are most needed include: 100-page composition books, glue sticks, 24-pack crayons, dry erase markers, colored pencils, two-pocket folders, pink erasers, filler paper, pencils and pencil cases. Supplies can be dropped off at Tools for School Broward, 2300 West Copans Road in Pompano Beach and monetary donations can be made to BrowardEdFoundation.org.

he City of Pembroke Pines Police Department recently honored 19 Pembroke Pines elementary school students at Pembroke Pines Police Department Headquarters during its “Student of the Month” ceremony. The students were nominated by their respective teachers based on criteria set forth by the Pembroke Pines Police Department that included exemplary behavior, good citizenship, and being a good role model.

After Pembroke Pines Sergeant James Henry’s welcomed the students, Police Captain Chris Stasio commended the students on their fine behavior and actions which led to their nominations. Each of the honorees was presented a certificate, posed for a photo and received a goodie bag. They also took the “Walk of Honor,” shaking hands with Major Carlos Bermudez, Crime Dog McGruff, Assistant Chief of Police Neil Vaughan, Captain Chris Stasio, and Sergeant Jim Henry, as well as Pembroke Pines elected officials - Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis, Vice Mayor Carl Shechter, Commissioners Iris Siple and Jay Schwartz.

PPCMS – West Robotics Teams to Compete at VEX Worlds

Knights teams traveled to Tampa, Florida to compete in the Florida State Vex IQ “Throughout the year, our West Campus robotics teams have done an outstanding job competing against equally impressive teams,” said Michael Castellano, principal of Pembroke Pines Charter School West Campus. “The teams have shown how dedication, skill and hard work pay off!”

In January, five West Campus teams participated in RoboSLAM Vex IQ Regional Qualifying competition at the Miami-Dade Fair and Expo Center against 54 South Florida teams. The PPCMS-West Campus Steel Jags, Mecha-Knights, and Tech Titans advanced to the teamwork match finals, where they placed in the Top 15. The Tech Titans team also won the design award, which is presented to the team with the most effective and efficient robot design process.

In early February, the Steel Jags and the MechaKnights competed in the last Vex IQ qualifier, where The 2016-2017 PPCMS-West robotics team with Michael Castellano, principal of PPCS-West Campus. they hoped to earn at least one of the two available slots left at the state competition. The PPCMS Teams were victorious in the comChampionship. They competed against 61 of the best teams from Florida in the petition against nine other teams. The Mecha-Knights and the Steel Jags posted daylong event. The Steel Jags and the Mecha-Knights finished 5th and 8th, respechigh scores in the skills challenges. I Love Tacos Owner Monica Angulo shares some of the secrets to the ever expanding restaurant’s success, as well as a few of her favorite dishes.

How has I Love Tacos grown over the years? It’s hard to believe

that in less than four years, we have gone from one restaurant to three, with another opening soon. In May, our flagship restaurant in Weston celebrates its four year anniversary. Our Pembroke Pines restaurant celebrates its three year anniversary in August.

Our Las Olas location, just steps from the beach, opened in February. Let’s not forget, the I Love Tacos food truck rolled out last November. And, I’m really excited to announce, we will be launching our brand new brand, I Love Cuba, this summer.

How do the three I Love Tacos restaurants differ? While all three serve authentic Mexican cuisine

in a friendly and casual atmosphere, each restaurant is unique. Weston is big and bright and familyfriendly. With the fountain in the center it’s reminiscent of being in a Mexican marketplace. The Pines location is smaller and more intimate. It’s a great spot to grab a quick lunch, get together with friends after work for a drink, or enjoy an evening out enjoying live music and a delicious meal in a cozy atmosphere. The Las Olas restaurant is the perfect place to grab a bite or drink when enjoying a day at the beach. You’re welcome, even if you are still wearing your swimsuit and flip flops. It also offers a late night menu and Azteca-size margaritas.

What distinguishes I Love Tacos from other Mexican restaurants?

Our Los Sopes were voted “best dish”

by I Love Tacos guests. These are small corn dough caps topped with beans, your choice of meat, lettuce, tomato, pico de gallo, cheese and sour cream. The Tacos Locos were awarded the Best Taco award from Reader’s Choice. Of course, our menu also features a selection of more popular Mexican dishes such as tacos, burritos, quesadillas, tostados and enchiladas, all prepared to perfection with your choice of filling. Choose from picadillo and chipotle (seasoned ground beef), carnitas (pork), carne asada (churrasco steak), pastor (pork with grilled pineapple), chicken tinga (shredded chicken), and rajas con crema (vegetables).

Aside from award-winning, authentic Mexican food, what can diners expect to find at I Love Tacos? You’ll find unique décor, full of color featuring Mexican folkloric decorations, images of Mexican celebrity icons, as well as Mexican soccer. I personally painted all of the tables and chairs in our restaurants. The walls are filled with photos of long-time clients as well as theme parties we’ve hosted.

What is special about your staff? Our wait staff is trained to provide top service in the friendliest atmosphere. They know each client and greet them at the door. Our clients quickly become our friends.

What meals do you serve? The Weston and Pembroke Pines restau-

rants are open for lunch and dinner. The Las Olas restaurant is also open for breakfast. On Friday and Saturday it serves brunch from 9am to 3pm with unlimited Passionfruit Mimosas and Micheladas (the original Mexican brunch drink) for only $15.

Do you offer catering? Each of our restaurants offers catering services, as well as our food truck. In addition, the Las Olas restaurant delivers to the beach and nearby hotels and businesses. I Love Tacos is a great place to host your special occasion celebration. From birthdays and anniversaries to baby showers and first communions, and even bachelor and bachelorette parties, we do it all. We can customize packages for each special event. After-hours packages are available to reserve the entire restaurant.

n February 11, the City of Pembroke Pines collaborated with the Broward County School Board in hosting the first kindness community event in support of the United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) Kindness Initiative. The event engaged attendees to practice the broader message of Kindness: Kindness/ Forgiveness/Compassion and Tolerance.

I knew, after attending the USCM 84th Annual Meeting kindness panel with the Dalai Lama, Lady Gaga and Phil Anschutz, that I needed to bring this Kindness Initiative back to our City. During our event, which attracted over 1,500 people, Dr. Robert Runcie, Broward County School Board Superintendent, and I challenged other leaders in Broward County cities to embrace this Kindness Initiative and organize similar events to promote awareness of Kindness, Compassion, and Forgiveness.

Why Mediate?

M

ediation is an effective and efficient option to costly, bitter and often times very lengthy litigation. Mediation can be done in almost any type of case including, but not limited to, divorce, asset distribution, child support, time-sharing, small claims, contract disputes, landlord/tenant issues, neighbor disputes, family disputes and employer disputes amongst many others.

The biggest benefits of Mediation are: ▸▸ Significantly reduced costs ▸▸ The ability to implement creative options ▸▸ Complete control by the Participants

Cost

Litigation (fighting it out in Court) is expensive and stressful. The hourly costs of attorney fees add up quickly, especially in situations where there is extensive discovery and the parties move forward to trial. Depending on the outcome at trial, one side can be responsible not only for his own attorney’s fees, but also for the fees of the opposing attorney. Mediation provides the participants with the ability to decide almost hour-by-hour how much they are willing to spend on the Mediation, since participation is voluntary.

Mediation is often conducted prior to filing any documents with the Court. This style of Mediation is the most cost effective. The Parties often present to Mediation prior to retaining an attorney in attempt to resolve most or all the issues prior to proceeding with legal representation and/or the filing fee costs imposed by the Court. Attending Mediation prior to heading to Court can save participants hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

Creative Options

Mediation provides a unique opportunity to the Participants to explore many different solutions to the dispute at hand. At Court, a Judge or Jury may only award that which has been pled and that to which the Litigant is legally entitled. At Mediation, the Participants can determine what is truly important to them and negotiate on how to reach a mutually agreeable resolution.

These creative options can be beneficial in many types of cases, such as where one party is judgment proof and even with a judgment they would not be able to repay the other party. It is also very beneficial in situations where the Participants will need to continue to deal with each other like in Landlord/ Tenant disputes and particularly in family issues involving children. Creative options reached during Mediations through negotiations have been deemed to be effective in providing families the best solutions for unique and often complicated family disputes.

Control

By far the most important aspect of Mediation is that at all times the Participants are in full control of everything that occurs during the Mediation.

Although the Mediator runs the Mediation and ensures everything runs smoothly, only the Participants can make a decision over the issues in their dispute. The Mediator is there as facilitator to assist the Parties fined solutions but cannot dictate or decide the outcome. The Participants at Mediation are in the driver’s seat and all times. This power is only available at Mediation.

Once the Parties decide to proceed to Court and rest their fate in the hands of a Judge or Jury, they can no longer decide what is best for them. At that point, each Party is at the mercy of the Court.

How Long Will This Take?

I

can always count on a prospective client to ask me the following two questions at their initial consultation: ▸▸ How long will my divorce take? ▸▸ How much will it cost?

In reality, the answer to the second question is directly related to the answer to first question.

Since attorney’s fees for divorce cases are based upon time spent by the attorney, the cost will vary from case to case. The more complex the case, the longer it usually takes and therefore the more it will cost. The more litigation in a case, the more time it will take and therefore, the more it will cost.

I often tell clients that it is really up to them how quickly a case gets resolved. The quicker they can reach an agreement, the quicker they can be divorced. Once an agreement is signed by the parties, it is literally a matter of weeks until a Final Judgment granting the divorce can be issued by a Judge.

However, what if there is not a quick settlement? What if there are issues which need to be litigated? How long can someone expect a divorce to continue until they get to a final resolution?

Unfortunately, sometimes the answers to these questions are not in the control of the attorney. In addition, Florida law provides for certain deadlines, which must be followed.

When a Petition for Dissolution is filed (the original document), it is usually served upon the other spouse. This process can take a week or more depending on a number of factors, such as the process server’s ability to locate the individual. The Florida Courts have recently converted to E-filing and this has also caused a delay in receiving documentation back from the Clerk’s Office. Once served, the spouse has twenty days to respond in writing. If the response contains a counter-petition, then another 20 days will be allowed for a subsequent response. At this point, the case is considered to be “at issue” and all initial pleadings have been filed. This is just the beginning stages and already approximately 6 weeks have passed.

If we need time to litigate any temporary issues, it could be weeks or months before we can obtain a court date. Judge’s dockets are full and it is simply a matter of first come, first served for a court date. No matter how much an attorney tries to get an earlier court date, the Judge only has a limited amount of time due to his/her heavy caseload.

So when I am asked, “Why is it taking so long?” I try my best to explain the various factors which cause delay. It is often times frustrating to me, so I can only imagine how frustrating it is for the client.

Pregnancy takes its toll on your body, especially your breasts and abdominal areas.

On average, most women gain 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy. This weight is stored as fatty tissue in the breasts, abdomen, flanks (love-handles), hips, buttocks and thighs. will be writing a monthly series on the newest direction in medicine – wellness. It has become a passion for me to practice and should become a passion for you to learn about and demand.

Over the years of practicing medicine and moving forward in my natural progression of life, I have learned about things that affect most of us in the same way. Do you have a mother with Alzheimer’s, a father with arthritis in his knees, a family member that died from a heart attack, or a co-worker who has just been diagnosed with breast cancer?

Well, I can say “yes” to all of these.

Do you know that most of these conditions, if not all, did not have to happen? All of them can eventually happen to you and your children. You will be left feeling as sad as you feel today if you don’t do something about it now! Isn’t it obvious that medicine has prolonged the number of years people live, but has not improved or prolonged their health?

Isn’t it also a familiar experience to go to your physician with an array of concerns and everyday symptoms not related to any specific illness, such as, “I’m always tired. I forget everything. I don’t want sex anymore. Everything bothers me.”

The most common answer you receive in response to your concerns is, “You are fine.

Your blood tests are okay. You are no longer 20-years old.” There are many things that we as physicians were not taught in medical school and specialty residencies. We were just educated to identify the disease and treat it, medically or surgically.

It has been my own job to learn from life and from my patients that medicine clearly has different aspects and treating them for a disease or illness is one of them. Optimizing how patients feel, live and function, as well as providing them with healthy aging, is called “wellness.” Let medicine treat diseases, but have wellness prevent diseases!

t’s the time of year that brings high school seniors news of college acceptances. After 18 years of living under mom and dad’s roof, your “baby” is moving away. It’s an exciting time for kids, but an emotional time for parents. You know how much you will miss your child, and distance won’t keep you from worrying about their well-being. It’s no surprise that you wonder, “Have I done all that I can to keep them safe?”

Many parents are stunned to discover that in medical emergencies they may not be entitled to information about their college-aged children.

Why? Because in the eyes of the law, your 18-year old is an adult. Legally, parents have no standing to know or do anything.

In an emergency, how will health care providers determine whom to call with urgent news? Will they know your child’s prior medical history? Often times, they simply won’t. What’s worse, even if a parent learns of a child’s illness or accident, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) prohibits doctors and hospitals from providing information about an adult’s medical condition without his/her written consent. While some hospitals make reasonable judgments about giving information to parents, others have refused to reveal anything, least of all over the phone. Some may not even acknowledge to frantic parents whether their adult child has been admitted to a hospital.

What can a parent do? It’s simple. Have your adult child execute advance directives, which include the following: ▸▸ HIPPA Authorization for Release of Protected Health Information - Grants health care providers permission to disclose medical information to designated individuals, which is essential to informed and timely decision-making. ▸▸ Health Care Power of Attorney - A document that authorizes another person to make medical decisions for your adult child, if they cannot. ▸▸ Living Will - A declaration stating whether or not life-sustaining procedures should be used to prolong life when a terminal condition is irreversible or death is imminent. ▸▸ Emergency Information and Contact List - An organized, updated and concise presentation of prior medical history, allergies, and emergency contact information.

Advance directives and emergency contact information should be immediately available when urgently needed, or the information is useless. We strongly recommend that every adult carry in their wallet an emergency medical information card that makes health/contact information and advance directives instantly accessible to medical facilities anywhere in the world. An estate planning attorney can prepare these advance directives, and arrange for an emergency medical card.

SCIENCE FAIR

A group of PPCMS-Central students is heading to the Broward County Science Fair.

SCIENTISTS – At the PPCS -

East Campus, two aspiring 3rd grade scientists, Vaishnavi Kappala & Jasmine Salmon, programmed satellite information via coordinates and maps of various countries for photographing to the International Space Station. They were participants in the Sally Ride EarthKam - Mission 56 program.

ART FESTIVAL

Thousands of art lovers enjoyed the 19th Annual Arts and Fine Crafts Festival hosted by the City of Pembroke Pines Recreation and Cultural Arts Department and Arts and Cultural Advisory Board. Pictured are some of the artists who won first place.

TEACHER OF THE YEAR

Deborah Alexander, kindergarten teacher at Pembroke Pines Elementary School, is one of six finalists for Broward County Public Schools Teacher of the Year.

Members of the Pembroke Pines Charter High School Student Government Association (SGA) recently “dashed” throughout Pembroke Pines City Hall to help raise money for Honor Flight South Florida, a nonprofit volunteer program created to honor America’s Veterans.

DONATIONS

The Builders Club of PPCMS West sent over five boxes filled with donations for the troops in Guantanamo Bay. The donation was in partnership with the Coast Guard, and Commander Chad Bland, who personally flew the donations to the base.

BRIGHT STEPS FORWARD Founded in 2005 to help families in need, Bright Steps Forward, Inc. is a 501(c)3 organization with the mission to ensure that ALL children in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties with neurological or developmental disorders have access to top quality special needs education and therapeutic interventions so they may achieve their maximum potential.

Bright Steps Forward operates a fully accredited therapeutic learning center for children with special needs that serves children from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Unlike public school classrooms, the class sizes in our learning centers are small and children are grouped according to their needs. Bright Steps Forward’s academic program follows the Sunshine State Standards and we include other programs to enrich the curriculum.

What sets our therapeutic learning centers apart from other special needs programs is our ability to provide intensive ABA, PT, OT and speech therapies during or after the tutoring sessions so that each child can blossom socially, physically as well as cognitively.
