Everybody Counts in Census 2020
T
his month we will all be part of history. The 2020 Census will be the first to be completed online, but there are options to complete by mail or even phone if you prefer. By definition, a census is an official count or survey of a population. Our Constitution calls for an “actual enumeration” to be completed once a decade. The first census was taken in 1790. It included the original 13 States, plus the districts of Kentucky, Maine, and Vermont, and the Southwest Territory (Tennessee). The 1790 enumeration asked for the name of the head of the family and the number of persons in each household of the following descriptions: free white males of 16 years and upward (to assess the country’s industrial and military potential); free white males under 16 years; free white females; all other free persons; and slaves. Census 2020 will ask questions such as the number of people living or staying in a home on April 1, 2020; whether the home is owned with or without a mortgage, rented or occupied without rent; and the name, sex, age, date of birth and race of each person in the home. When filling out your census it is important to include every person living in the household, regardless of age, citizenship or immigration status. Your responses are confidential and protected by federal law. The Census Bureau cannot share responses identifying individuals with the public or other federal agencies, including immigration authorities and law enforcement. The results of Census 2020 will have a direct impact on our communities, so it is critical that everyone is counted. Census results help determine how billions of dollars in federal funding flow into states, counties and cities each year for things such as health care, fire departments, school funding, and even construction of roads and highways. Census data also determines our political future by determining how many seats in Congress each state gets and legislative districts. Please keep an eye on your mailbox this month and be sure to take the steps to complete Census 2020. Your community is counting on you being counted. Sincerely,

Hail to the Champ: Pembroke Pines’ Sophia Kenin Is on Top of the Tennis World BY TERRY JAILLET
Pembroke Pines’ Sophia Kenin took the tennis world by storm by winning the Australian Open. In doing so, she became the youngest Women’s Grand Slam winner since Serena Williams won at Wimbleton in 2002. “These past two weeks have been a lot of emotions. It is just such an honor. I am cloud nine right now.,” commented Kenin during the post-match press conference. The 21-year old sat in front of a throng of reporters with a glass of champagne in her hand and a beaming smile.

Collages, Drawings, Paintings, Photography, Sculptures, or a combination of mediums are accepted. The budding artists will be judged on their artistic expression and creativity. Winners in each grade level will be announced and receive a ribbon and gift card as follows: 1st place: $100 gift card, 2nd place: $50 gift card, 3rd place: $25 gift card. Following the awards presentation, participants are invited to a free ice cream celebration. ArtFest in the Pines will take place on March 14th-15th, 2020 from 10:00 am-5:00 pm at the Charles F. Cleveland Clinic Weston Launches New Bone Cancer Treatment Program BY STACEY BOMSER
C
leveland Clinic Weston is leading the way in treating patients with a rare form of cancer with its new multidisciplinary Sarcoma Program. Specialists in the Orthopaedic and Rheumatologic Center and the Maroone Cancer Center will collaborate to develop treatment plans designed to provide the best possible outcome and improve quality of life for patients with sarcoma. Sarcomas are cancers of the bone and soft tissue. They are extremely rare, with fewer than 200,000 cases diagnosed each year in this country. Sarcomas can be found anywhere in the upper or lower extremities and require special attention from initial diagnosis through treatment. “We are excited to launch this new program that brings together specialists who are experienced
in the care of complex, challenging tumors,” said Cleveland Clinic Weston President Rodolfo J. Blandon, MD, MBA. “As a quaternary and tertiary care medical center, our highly specialized medical team is committed to working together to tailor treatment plans to meet each patient’s needs and goals.” In order to accomplish this, Cleveland Clinic Weston’s Sarcoma Program brings together orthopedic and general surgeons, medical oncologists, musculoskeletal radiologists, pathologists, and plastic surgeons who are experts in treating a variety of sarcomas. The program is headed by Jorge Manrique, MD, a specialist in musculoskeletal oncology as well as hip and knee replacement surgery. “We are pleased to offer patients with bone and soft tissue tumors the
opportunity to be treated with the latest technology and improve their quality of life,” said Dr. Manrique. “Patients tend to have better outcomes with they receive coordinated care at a center with highly trained specialists from different disciplines. We look forward to providing our patients with compassionate care in one convenient location.” In addition to treating patients with sarcoma, Cleveland Clinic Weston’s Sarcoma Program will also treat patients who have other forms of cancer that has metastasized to the bone. These patients require special attention to avoid fractures and reduce the impact of the disease. Cleveland Clinic Weston is part of the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. Its Sarcoma Program is regarded as a national and international resource for the diagnosis

As one of the largest programs in the United States, Cleveland Clinic’s specialists treat hundreds of people with benign and malignant tumors each year. Pines Lakes Elementary carried out its reading of “Thank You, Omu” in two languages, English and Spanish. For the past three years, the Pembroke Pines school has made a bilingual interactive read-aloud a tradition. “We highly respect and value our diverse student population which includes dual-language learners and the bilingual read-aloud is representative of that. The idea behind it was to simultaneously read the book in English and Spanish, while having students interact with the book through thinkalouds and new
vocabulary words in both languages,” explained Principal Susan F. Sasse. This year the school invited guest readers for the bilingual read aloud, and Stephanie Bustillo and Hanne Sinclair from the district’s ESOL/ Bilingual Department were gracious enough to accept their invitation. “Being able to include both the English and Spanish speakers of our diverse population creates a wonderful sense of community,” stated Kindergarten teacher Carey Hastings. “Reading aloud is a powerful tool that connects us not only to new experiences but to each other as humans. When students who speak other languages are included in school-wide celebrations like this, they not only know but feel they belong in Pines Lakes,” added Johanna Benitez the literacy coach at Pines Lakes.

Conservatory Prep Students Are “Sew” Amazing! BY BEVERLY PERKINS

fter the winter break, Conservatory Prep students jumped right into a philanthropic project to start the new year off right. Longtime school volunteer Beth Goldstein heard about an opportunity through The Rescue Collective to help rescue those animals affected by the wildfires in Australia and she shared her idea Dr. Wendy Hirsch Weiner. According to many news reports, the fires have consumed millions of acres and it’s estimated that more than 500,000 animals have been killed in the conflagration. Without hesita-

tion, the esteemed school founder and principal loved the idea and wanted to begin right away as she is always searching for ways to involve her students in the world around them. “As part of the Conservatory Prep mission, we instruct our students through the arts and experiential learning to meet the needs of our twice-exceptional students. The devastating fires in Australia gave us an opportunity to learn about the geography and environment of the region and allowed us to help the animals burned by the fires in a small way,” explained Dr. Weiner. Cotton pouches needed to be made to provide comfortable, secure homes for animals separated from their mothers in the natural disaster. Conservatory Prep donated the 100% organic cotton fabric needed for the pouch liners with the students’ families providing fabric swatches for the
outer shells. Goldstein, an avid sewer, was thrilled to assist the group of fourteen to seventeen-year-olds. She downloaded patterns and instructions from the Queensland nonprofit organization and taught the ambitious students how to cut and sew to create Jaclyn Greenwald the much-needed Joey pouches for the young marsupials. “The kids came through. They asked many questions about the animals they were going to save, and they were enthusiastic and felt empowered. We made 35 pouches for the Joeys that day. I am thrilled to volunteer at a school where we can actually get projects done,” noted Goldstein. “It felt like we were really helping out the animals in Australia. So many were badly injured, I saw videos online. It was really upsetting to see them

caught in the fires. So, it was great that our school did this. And it wasn’t just our school, everybody was trying to help, and we were a part of that. That was pretty cool,” exclaimed Conservatory Prep Schools senior, Alex Gold. “People are just going out in their cars and plucking frightened and injured animals out of trees, providing whatever first aid they can and bringing them to rescue centers that have sprung up all over the country,” added Dr. Weiner. “Our group is just one of hundreds in countries across the world who are doing what we can to help.”

UF seeks high school student applicants for science summer program BY: JOHN DUKA
This summer, Florida high school students have the opportunity to experience college life at the University of Florida while learning how the agricultural, natural resource and life sciences impact their families and communities around the world. Rising high school juniors and seniors are encouraged to apply for the Florida Youth Institute (FYI), a week-long summer program sponsored by the UF/IFAS College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS), the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) and The World Food Prize Foundation.
“I was empowered after attending FYI,” said Maria Duran, a 2019 FYI participant and a student at Cypress Bay High School. “During the program, we toured various facilities around UF, where experts are doing their part to improve food security in Florida and around the world. We were exposed to ways we can be part of the solution as well.” FYI participants will: • Engage in hands-on activities and demonstrations. • Experience indoor and outdoor laboratories and campus facilities. • Meet CALS Dean Elaine Turner, repre-

F
oot and ankle injuries are very common in sports or in general activities of daily living. Many structures including bone, ligament, cartilage and joint lining may be injured. Injuries may occur from a single traumatic event or from overuse. Injuries may occur during the teenage years that may manifest themselves later on. These injuries may cause stiffness and pain in the foot or the ankle joints, especially after getting out of bed first thing in the morning to walk. This stiffness and pain will be present for a proportional period of time usually to the degree of joint injury. With weightbearing, the joint usually loosens and the person is able to ambulate. This stiffness and pain will redevelop if the person sits for a period of time and tries to get up and walk. As the day goes on, the foot or ankle may ache, especially with excessive activity. Swelling may be present over the area that is injured. Instability may develop if the ligaments have been injured causing the foot or ankle to constantly twist. When these injuries are unresponsive to con-
servative treatment which may include orthotics, medication or rehabilitation, arthroscopic surgery may be necessary to remove the damaged tissue in the foot and ankle. A miniature camera is placed into the injured joint allowing an image to be seen on a television screen. The joint is visualized, and small instruments are introduced into the joint to clean out and repair the damage. Fragments of bone and cartilage are often removed. Suctioning of debris and smoothing rough surfaces will often allow a joint to resume its normal gliding motion. Arthroscopic surgery may be used to treat chronic joint pain and swelling; arthritis and bone spurs; loose bone and cartilage fragments; stiff, scarred joints; and ankle fractures that have not completely recovered. The advantages of this treatment include faster recovery; less pain and swelling; avoids large incisions; low risk of infection; it is an outpatient procedure; and a quicker return to activities. Joints are designed to give our bodies freedom of movement. Wear and tear of a joint due to injury or due to aging may alter the lifestyle of an individual. When conservative treatments fail, arthroscopic surgery should be considered. The surgery is especially helpful for a fracture that has occurred to the
ankle even after the ankle has been fixed surgically. The cartilage in the ankle joint may have been damaged during the injury causing chronic stiffness and pain that may be mild but never goes away completely. Patients often think that this is a very livable condition. However, once treated arthroscopically, a full return to activity may be possible. Carlo A. DR. MILAGRITOS RIOS, DMD e just finished the Month of Love! Like me, you probably saw many promotions about teeth whitening. In fact, many people come to my office with questions about teeth whitening. Some are even concerned that it will destroy the enamel of their teeth. I want to ease your concerns. Teeth, as well as hair, eyes, and skin, have color variations from person to person and sometimes even from tooth to tooth. At the basic level, teeth are made up of molecules. These molecules are initially small, and they are constantly joining together to form larger molecules. The larger the molecule, the higher the quantity of light they can absorb. Therefore, they look darker and can have intrinsic stains, which are absorbed in the microstructure of the tooth. Tooth whitening solutions use gel peroxide. There are different brands, which contain different peroxide mixtures, but they all use hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen perozide acts by producing oxygenation sometimes referred to as “scrubbing bubbles”. These bubbles disintegrate the long molecules we mentioned previously. They also break the long molecular chains, making them smaller so they will no longer absorb the light and look whiter. There are also whitening procedures that use light and lasers. These techniques work in the same way, they use the peroxide as well, but the light or PuzzleJunction.com laser helps accelerate the process by creating an exothermic reaction (heat). It has been shown that this system generates more dental sensitivity, not because the combination of peroxide with heat causes the pulp of the tooth (the nerve) to produce a substance related to dental pain and inflammation. I hope we have demystified the teeth whitening process. Tooth whitening will not destroy your teeth. It does not affect the enamel of the teeth but does change the molecules and particles that are absorbed and formed within it and make the tooth look darker. It is also essential to know which system is more convenient for each patient. Within the systems, some are carried out in the dental office, while others use bleaching trays that you can use at home. For these, it is better to make customized cuvettes with a dentist to avoid mixing and wasting the gel with saliva, which makes the treatment less effective. The Collaborative Process & the Flat Fee Option BY FERNANDA PEDROSO, ESQ. hen meeting with potential clients seeking advice related to their family law issues, I find that they are anxious about two main points: 1) how their case will be resolved and 2) how much the total cost will be. I always explain that how much a case ends up costing is directly linked to how long it takes to resolve their case. While most family cases deal with similar issues— division of assets, financial support for a spouse (alimony)and/or child support and the accompanying parenting plan addressing timesharing—not all families have the same dynamic. That difference in family dynamic is what can cause one case to reach a resolution in a short period of time with little exposure to litigation, and another case to drag on for what feels like an eternity, which often results in court intervention. Naturally, the more time a case is pending, the more likely it is that it is financially costing the client.

Do Your Eyes Make You Look Tired? BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. he eyes are the first thing we notice when we meet someone. Beautiful eyes can make up for other features that are less than ideal. Likewise, eyes that are tired, droopy, or puffy may not reflect a vibrant inner self. It is often said that the earliest signs of aging are around the eyes. Perhaps people are always questioning whether or not you had a good night’s sleep, because your eyes are swollen with bags. Fortunately, at the Weston Cosmetic Surgery Center, we can give you dramatically younger looking eyes through “eyelid lifts,” also known as blepharoplasty. A primary reason for droopy eyes is simply due to age. It can also be hereditary. As everything droops, so do the eyebrows. As the outer part of the eyebrows droop, the skin of the upper eyelids will look saggy, as if you had developed extra skin that was not there several years before. Removing this “extra” skin can drastically improve that droopy look. Another reason for “tired eyes” is because of droopy or migrating eyelid fat. This fat is held back by a thin wall of fibrous tissue called the orbital septum, which weakens over time. The fat, held firmly back by this wall in youth can bulge with age, giving you “baggy” upper and lower eyelids. Blepharoplasty removes this extra fat and tightens the wall, restoring a youthful contour. For those patients with puffiness under the eyes or baggy upper and lower eyelids, laser eyelid surgery can reduce and often eliminate these problems. The end results are a more alert and youthful look around the eyes. The prominent fat pockets can be removed from a hidden incision along the inside surface of the eyelid. This “no stitch”, no external scar technique is utilized when patients have fat prominence of “eyelid bags” alone without excess or sagging eyelid skin. If minimal excess skin is present, a skin pinch technique is combined with transconjunctival fat removal. In this case, a “pinch” of lower eyelid skin is removed. These techniques typically result in less swelling, less discomfort, and shorter recovery time. I will assess which technique is ideal for your eyes during your personal consultation. Recovery from eyelid surgery usually takes seven to ten days. Sunglasses allow you to go out in public immediately after surgery, and make-up can be worn within about one week. Normal activity can be resumed within a few days, and exercise can be resumed within 14 days after surgery. If the eyes looking back at you in the mirror are not reflecting how you are feeling, it might be time to consider a blepharoplasty. Providing for Minor Children BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE re you a parent with minor children? If you are, your days are busy and your life is full. Probably the last thing you want to imagine is the possibility that someday you may leave for work in the morning, and not return. Who will take care of your children if something happens to you? Have you ever thought about a will or trust? Perhaps that’s something you’d consider when you’re older. You’re young, healthy, and, of course, you plan to be around for a long time: to see your children finish college, to walk your daughter down the aisle, to grow old with your spouse or partner and to play with your grandchildren. But we are reminded on a daily basis that life doesn’t always go as planned. I am often reminded of one of my favorite John Lennon lyrics, “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans,” from his song, “Beautiful Boy.” The song was written for his young son, Sean. And, in the same year, the song was released, tragedy struck. Lennon was shot and killed in front of his New York apartment. Life doesn’t always go as planned. As an estate planning attorney, I frequently see the sad consequences of a family facing an unexpected death, made even more difficult when minor children are involved. Does having an estate plan lessen the pain of an expected loss? Of course not. But it does take some of the burden off surviving family members: difficult decisions have already been made, priorities set, helpers designated.

What happens if both parents die simultaneously, or within a short duration of time? A contingency plan should identify the persons you’d like to manage your assets, as well as the guardian you’d nominate to finish raising your children. In many instances, you may purposely designate different persons to deal with your money and your children so as to maintain a system of checks and balances. You don’t want the probate court deciding who will manage your finances or to guess whom you’d prefer to raise your children. Other issues to consider are whether you’d like your heirs to receive an inheritance directly, or whether you’d prefer to have the assets placed in trust. Funds from a trust can be distributed based on a number of factors that you designate such as age, need, and/or even incentives based on behavior and education. All too often, children receive substantial assets before they are mature enough to handle them properly, with devastating results. Most importantly, give careful thought to your choice of guardian, ensuring that he or she shares the values you want to be instilled in your children. Life can change in an instant.
