Pembroke Pines Charter School Foundation Has Many Fundraisers Planned

he Pembroke Pines Charter School (PPCS) Foundation has a variety of fun and exciting events planned for the remainder of the school year. Three upcoming major event fundraisers include: Pines “Light UP the Night” 5K, Taste of Pines, and Mayor’s Golf Tournament.

The Foundation is supported entirely by contributions from individuals, businesses and granting organizations. Money raised is used for necessary capital improvements and infrastructure, aid in underwriting the increasing costs of benefits and operating expenses, and to help raise the system’s reserves to financially sustainable levels.

Some of the upcoming fundraisers planned include: ▸▸ Pines “Light UP the Night” 5K – On February 10, experience a run in the dark during the 1st Annual “Light UP the Night 5K. The race begins at the old Pembroke Pines City Hall at the corner of Pines Boulevard and Palm Avenue and immediately to the East of the City of Pembroke Pines Charles F. Dodge City Center, 601 City Center Way. Each runner will be given an LED race bracelet, which will light up and change colors at each mile marker. As runners finish the race, their bracelets will become a rainbow of colors when they pass under a lighted arch on The Plaza of City Center. Prior to the awards presentation, runners will enjoy dessert samples and beer for those 21 and older who present an I.D., Food Truck Invasion, a black light area, sponsor give-a-ways, glow in the dark necklaces and create a personalized Pines Light Up the Night, 5K-Run 2018 backdrop for selfies. Packet pickup begins at 4:30

Young Dancers Perform for Assisted Living Facility

group of 30 young dancers, ages three to 12, from Thrive Performing Arts in Pembroke Pines took time out of their busy weekends to entertain seniors at The Peninsula Assisted Living Facility during the holiday season. It is just one of the many ways they give back to the community throughout the year.

“It was a great way to show the dancers how much joy their dancing can bring to others,” said Andrea Solis, owner/dance director. “The residents were so excited! They couldn’t thank us enough for doing something so different and entertaining. They enjoyed the performances very much!”

Hailey Vasquez, 11, has been dancing competitively for one year. She participated in the performance. “It was really fun, because we got to perform for the

people who usually don’t see other people perform,” said Hailey.

Thrive’s dancers have recently given back to the community in a variety of other ways. In September, the dancers held a grand opening event to raise funds for hurricane victims. They donated the funds to the American Red Cross and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. In October, they performed at Renaissance Charter School for the Halloween Fundraiser event.

They participated in the Broward Moms Inc. Family Fun Day event, which raised money for single moms in Broward. They were also part of the Pembroke Pines Snow Fest. They will participate in the Davie Orange Blossom Parade this month, as well as Pines Day later in the year.

“To have the opportunity to bring a group of girls together, to form friendships, talents and passions is the highlight of my job,” said Solis. “To be able to spread that positivity and share the beauty of the performing arts with our community is the cherry on top. The dancers learn from it and are able to focus their energy on the good out there in the world.”

Find Bargains at the Flea Market and Bazaar

argain hunters from near and far are expected to meet at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center in Pembroke Pines for the Flea Market and Bazaar. They will have an opportunity to search through tables of treasures from over 100 venders in more than 53,000 square feet of air-conditioned, indoor comfort. The event will be held on February 10, from 8am-4pm, and February 11, from 9am-3pm. Admission and parking are free. Proceeds will benefit senior programs.

“Over 100 indoor vendors will offer a large variety of items, wanting to start off 2018 with great flea market priced bargains to be rewarded with high sales” said Valerie Toth, Activities Events Specialist and Flea Market point person. “So stop on by, you never know what you’ll find!”

There will be thousands of household items, toys, clothing, new & estate jewelry, collectibles, bath soaps & scrubs, record albums, baseball cards, unique arts/crafts and much more. There will also be food available in Emilio’s Café.

Buyers are encouraged to come early, since a large crowd of people always forms before the doors open. Most know what they are looking for and want to be the first to find it.

The Flea Market and Bazaar is held four times a year (February, May, August, and November). It helps to raise funds for senior programs at the SWFP Community Center, which provides the community with a wide range of programs and activities that promote physical and mental stimulation, encourage socialization, cultural education and intellectual enrichment. The Center is committed to offering quality comprehensive services and updated programs that respond to the changing needs within our diverse communities.

The Frank Art Gallery to Host Several Events and Workshops

his month, The Frank art gallery, will offer the community a variety of free events and workshops. Several of them support the gallery’s current exhibition, “Perceptual Tracking: A Color Space,” which is on display through March 12.

“Perceptual Tracking: A Color Space” is a collaborative installation by artists Leah Brown, Christian Feneck and Peter Symons. Visitors will experience a visual immersion of color and form interacting with custom, color-shifting light that gives the sensation of movement while concealing and revealing as it shifts through the spectrum. This color-space combines narrative-driven sculptural elements with color-field painting and atmospheric lighting to create four distinct views of a visually confusing scene that combines elements of the organic and inorganic, the “real” and the perceived, predator and prey. In the front gallery, contemporary artists Henning Haupt, Donna Haynes, Bonney Goldstein, Virginia Fifield and Jen Clay have created pieces around the overarching theme of perception.

“Perceptual Tracking kicks off an amazing year we have planned at The Frank in 2018,” said Joshua Carden, chief curator of The Frank. “The brilliant minds of some very talented artists have created an exceptional experience within this exhibition and we are excited to share this and more with the community.”

and the natural world. Fifield’s work is featured in “Perceptual Tracking: A Color Space.” ▸▸ Frank Contemporaries – On February 22, from 6pm to 8pm, the public is invited to participate in Frank Contemporaries, a free monthly meet-up for emerging creative and visual arts professionals to network and foster connections at regular social events. Pembroke Pines Students Invited to Enter Art Competition

or years, the City of Pembroke Pines has offered adults a way to showcase their artistic talents in competitions.

Now, it is also providing students attending school in Pembroke Pines with a way to showcase their creativity. The City of Pembroke Pines Recreation & Cultural Arts Department and the Arts & Culture Advisory Board are presenting the 1st Annual Student Art Competition. The deadline to apply is March 3, at 5pm.

“We have an adult art competition and we felt it important to do the same for our youth,” said Holly Bonkowski, Division Director of Cultural Arts for the City of Pembroke Pines. “The City of Pembroke Pines is looking forward to showcasing the artistic abilities of the students in our Pembroke Pines schools.”

Students, in grades K to 12, may submit artwork in collages, drawings, paintings, photography, sculptures, or a combination of mediums and materials.

All artwork submitted will be reviewed and the City reserves the right to reject any artwork deemed inappropriate. Winners will be chosen by a selected panel of judges based on artistic expression and creativity by grade level (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12). A student in each

grade level will be awarded with a ribbon and a gift card to the Shops at Pembroke Gardens: 1st place winner receives $100; 2nd place winner receives $50; 3rd place winner receives $25.

Artwork will be displayed in the main lobby of the Charles F. Dodge City Center from March 5 to March 12. Winners will be announced on March 10, at 1pm, at the Artist Reception held at the Charles F. Dodge City Center. Immediately after, the Shops at Pembroke Gardens will sponsor a FREE ice cream celebration to all participating artists and their parents.

“Since this is the first year that we are having this competition, I’m quite excited and hope to get an overwhelming response,” said Amelia Mohamed, Studio 18 in the Pines Facility Manager. “I know that we have many talented students in the City of Pembroke Pines. Master Chef Chocolate Challenge Returns

ttention Chocoholics! The Master Chef Chocolate Challenge is returning to Pembroke Pines. Bring in your favorite home baked cakes, cookies, pies, brownies, cupcakes and other desserts and you may be leaving with a prize. The event will be held on February 13, from 10am-11:30am, at the Carl Schechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center. The deadline to enter is February 9.

There is no cost.

“Never underestimate the power of chocolate; it is the key to happiness!” said Helen Daniels, Recreation Division Supervisor.

“This challenge gives home ‘chefs’ the chance to showcase their culinary skills and possibly win a cash prize.

Remember to be creative. Judges are not only looking for the best tasting dessert, they are also looking for the dessert that is beautiful to look at!”

Artis Senior Living to Open New Memory Care Assisted Living Community in Davie

I

n July 2018, Artis Senior Living will be opening a 72-suite memory care community in Davie for seniors affected by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Residents will be able to move freely among neighborhoods in the one-story, 35,000 square foot community. They can also take advantage of an outdoor area on three acres of secured land. Imaginations Came Alive at the StoryBook Festival

any think of the library as a place to read a book in silence. Some of these books recently came alive at the 16th Annual StoryBook Festival at the Broward County Southwest Regional Library. The free family event offered a day of music, dance, storytelling, storybook characters, children’s performances and more. Thousands attended and many of them were dressed as their favorite storybook characters, such as Cinderella, Waldo and Harry Potter.

This year’s theme was “It Takes a Village.”

It celebrated the 50th anniversary of the book “Frederick,” written and illustrated by Leo Lionni, which focuses on the nature of community and the many roles played within a community.

There was an enchanted forest, where children met some of their favorite characters, such as Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, The Three Little Pigs, and Rumpelstiltskin. Throughout the library, there were entertainers and storytellers recreating these stories and bringing them to life. The City of Pembroke Pines sponsored an arts and crafts tent where kids got creative. Guest enjoyed food trucks, face painting, photo spots and much more.

The Storybook Festival was presented by and funded through the Broward Public

Library Foundation, in partnership with the City of Pembroke Pines. It was sponsored by the Friends of Southwest Regional Library with Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital as presenting sponsor.

PPCHS Students “Dash” to Raise Funds for Honor Flight South Florida

embers of the Pembroke Pines Charter High School Student Government Association (SGA) recently “dashed” throughout Pembroke Pines Charles F. Dodge City Center, 601 City Center Way, to help raise money for Honor Flight South Florida. The nonprofit organization transports America’s Veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit/ tour the United States Veterans Military Memorials created to honor their service and sacrifice.

“The Dollar Dash helps fund a day trip to Washington, D.C. for our Veterans to tour our Veteran Memorials which recognize and honor their service and sacrifice and those who never returned home,” said Andrew Curry, Pembroke Pines Charter High School’s Student Government Association Adviser/AICE International History, AICE U.S. History, and Leadership Development Teacher.

The students walked into every department of City Hall carrying large donation buckets. As they met with each person, they explained the mission behind the Honor Flight program and the importance each donation made to City Hall employees. The 3rd Annual Dollar Dash raised $2,797, up from $700 in 2016. The donations will cover expenses for Veterans to make a day-trip to Washington D.C. Since Honor Flight South Florida began in 2012, it has taken over 600 local WWII Veterans on the Honor Flight to Washington, DC to visit those memorials dedicated to

honor the service and sacrifices of themselves and their friends. It gives top priority to senior veterans – World War II survivors – along with those other veterans who may be terminally ill. It has also brought hundreds of World War II Veterans to local schools as guest speakers. The Veterans bring a unique life experience to the classroom, giving the students an opportunity to learn from those who have lived world history.

Seniors from Pembroke Pines Charter High School will battle local senior citizens (60 and older) during the 3rd Annual Seniors vs. Seniors Spelling Bee. The event, which is presented by the City of Pembroke Pines Community Services, will be held from 12:30pm – 2pm, in the main hall of the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Senior Center Campus, located at 301 NW 103 Ave. Registration is required.

PPCSS Opens Lottery for the 2018-19 School Year

or the past 17 years, the Pembroke Pines Charter School Elementary and Middle schools have earned an “A” rating, based on FSA scores and other factors. Through March 10, Florida residents are invited to enroll their child/children into the 2018-2019 school year lottery for the City of Pembroke Pines Charter School System (PPCSS), which includes four elementary schools, three middle schools, and one high school.

“The students in our system receive private school education without paying private school tuition,” said Jonathan Bonilla, Controller for the City of Pembroke Pines.

Since its inception in 1998, PPCSS has received numerous awards and recognitions. In 2007, it was named a 2007 National Charter School of the Year.

It was awarded the National Blue Ribbon School of

Pembroke Pines Charter High School is one of eight schools in the PPCS System.

Excellence, the highest honor an American school can achieve, in 2009 for the Pembroke Pines Charter Middle School and in 2015 for the Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary School-FSU Campus. Yes, there are priorities which are assigned thru the applicant’s highest qualifying category.

In order, from highest to lowest priority, they include: parent/guardian is a school employee; active duty military parent/guardian; siblings of current students; Pembroke Pines residents; all other applicants. ▸▸ How do students enter the lottery system for the first time? Parents/guardians can apply at www. pinescharterapply.net. Once the lottery application is successfully submitted, parents/guardians can view the lottery results from the website.

Parents/guardians will also be sent additional

notification of the lottery results via email. ▸▸ Do current students need to re-enroll? Yes, parents/guardians are required to re-enroll their student(s) for the new school year, update and/ or verify contact information. Parents/guardians who re-enroll their students(s) by March 10th will be awarded 1 (one) volunteer service hour per student(s). ▸▸ What do students do who are already on the lottery wait list? If the parents/guardians cannot successfully log in, then use the forgotten password feature or contact a registrar for assistance. A.C. Perry Elementary Students Receive Free Books

embers of the Rotary Club of Miramar-Pines are helping students at Annabel C. Perry Elementary School create a home library. For the seventh year, they provided all of the students with a book as a holiday gift.

“Many of the students have never owned a book before,” said Gail Quigley, retired middle school principal, who helped initiate the project and has been a member of the Rotary for 20 years. “If they don’t see reading at home, how are they ever going to develop reading as something one does for pleasure? Reading at home is very different from reading at school.

We need to have kids experience this difference for themselves.”

All of the students visited the resource room to select a book of their choice. There was excitement in the room as they chose from a variety of genres, including mystery, fantasy, historical fiction, informational text, realistic fiction, science fiction and more. Members of the Rotary Club, Principal Thomas Correll, classroom teachers, and other school administrators were there to help them. By the time they graduate, they may have received as many as nine books from the Rotary.

“Having partnerships with organizations such as the Rotary Club allows us to increase the resources that will impact our students,” said Principal Thomas J. Correll. “The Book Giveaway is just one of the many ways to help our students establish a love of literacy and build a foundation of reading.”

This year, the Rotary Club of Miramar-Pines also gave hundreds of books to Sunshine Elementary for the first time. Each child in the school was allowed to select a new book. n 1982, 12-year-old Andre Agassi and his doubles partner, Roddy Parks, won the National Indoor Boys 14’s Doubles Championship in Chicago, IL. Less than a year later, he was shipped off to Nick Bolletieri’s Tennis Academy in Bradenton. He would go on become one of the greatest tennis players in history. Agassi famously trained exclusively for tennis from a very young age and reached greatness.

Most of our children are not prodigies like Agassi. Many however, face pressure to specialize in a sport at increasingly younger ages. The emergence of club teams and travel sports combined with a prioritization of excellence over participation and the year-round warm weather of South Florida makes this trend even more pronounced here than in other areas of the country.

Different Strokes for Different Sports…

Does Specialization Make Someone a Better Performer?

Author Malcom Gladwell famously coined the “10,000-hour rule.” This “rule” is an adaptation of an old theory about chess masters.

It suggests that becoming a master requires around 10,000 hours of dedicated practice and training.

Gladwell applied this theory to life more broadly: to become a true expert takes a lot of hard work!

Proponents of sports specialization have adapted this theory: if a child shows an aptitude for a sport, having them focus on this sport early sets them on a path to attaining those 10,000 hours, becoming great and potentially gaining a college scholarship.

Sports Specialization: Should Kids Focus on What They are Best At? A 2013 study by the National Institute of Health suggests, however, that timing may be what matters most. The study’s conclusion states “Some degree of sports specialization is necessary to develop elite-level

skill development. However, for most sports, such intense training in a single sport to the exclusion of others should be delayed until late adolescence.”

Health Risks There are essentially two types of sports-related injuries: traumatic injuries and overuse injuries. Overuse injuries are typically caused when a person does the same physical motion over and over, causing wear and tear.

Playing a single year-round sport significantly increases the risk of these types of injuries.

Dr. James R. Andrews, founder of the Andrews Institute for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine has become an outspoken critic of specialization.

“I have seen my patient population and surgical cases get increasingly younger. Children, parents and coaches need to realize that kids need to take a break from

The benefits and timing gained from specializing vary significantly by sport. Sports where athletes tend to be elite at a young age favor earlier specialization. Parents of star gymnasts or tennis players often contemplate home-school their children to maximize training time.

According to a 2016 NCAA survey, almost nine out of ten college gymnasts said they had specialized by the age of 12.

Other sports had far less pronounced benefits and trends toward specialization. Football players, for instance, had the lowest levels of high school specialization.

In fact, every touchdown scored in this year’s NCAA National Championship Game was scored by an athlete who played multiple sports throughout high school.

Interestingly, none of them play any other sport while in college. In fact, multi-sport collegiate athletes are extremely rare.

Should You Make the #1 Sport the Only Sport?

Specializing in a single sport at a young age is a bad idea. A study that tracked young athletes between 1990 and 2011 concluded, “For most sports, there is no evidence that intense training and specialization before puberty are necessary to achieve elite status. Risks of early sports specialization include higher rates of injury, increased psychological stress, and quitting sports at a young age.”

For High School kids, it’s a bit of a different question. Sports participation like theater or art or music are as much about a teen’s self-identification and pursuit of happiness as they are about pursuing excellence. Being good at something is important to selfesteem and makes that activity more fun. So, if your 14-year-old daughter wants to drop Basketball to focus on Volley Ball, tell her to go for it!

Facelift Techniques

L

ifestyle lift, S-Lift, Whisper lift, and Feather lift.

The names may change, but these procedures are almost identical.

Cosmetic surgeons will change the name of a straightforward procedure in an attempt to gain new patients, attract attention to “their” practice, or to lure an uneducated patient into thinking that “their” procedure is somehow “better” than what has been done thousands of times before by well-qualified plastic surgeons.

The original “facelift procedure” was performed by Dr. Eugen Höllander in 1901, and involved elevating with tightening the facial skin only. The procedure has evolved and undergone multiple transformations. Today, a facelift typically involves elevation of the skin on cheek and neck with tightening of the underlying muscle (the SMAS in the cheek and the platysma on the neck). The 21st Century approach to facial rejuvenation focuses on a structured reconstruction as well with fat grafting and tissue tightening.

As skin ages, there is a loss of collagen and elastic, which results in increased skin laxity. This, coupled with loss of the underlying soft tissue volume, results in prominent nasolabial folds, jowls, and neck bands. In order to improve the appearance of the face and neck, a skin tightening procedure should be performed.

This can be accomplished several ways – lifting and removing excess skin, a skin resurfacing procedure with laser or chemical peel, or restoring loss of soft tissue volume with fat or synthetic fillers. These techniques can be used alone or in a combination, depending on each person’s individual facial anatomy and appearance goals.

In describing face lifting procedures, the facial skin is elevated, the underlying muscle is tightened and the excess skin is removed. When the skin laxity is limited to the cheek area, a mini or short-scar facelift can be performed (scar is limited to the area in the front of the ear). If neck skin laxity and neck bands are present, additional incisions can be made behind the ear and under the chin. This technique is referred to as a full facelift, or face and neck lift.

The Lifestyle lift and S-Lift have similar incisions with limited undermining or elevation of the face and neck skin. If there is heaviness or sagging of the eyebrow, then a browlift or forehead lift is performed. In certain cases, depending on the patient’s facial appearance, a facelift is performed in combination with soft tissue volume addition by fat transfer, skin smoothing with a chemical peel or laser resurfacing.

The most important factor to consider when making a decision to have elective cosmetic surgery is the surgeon, the facility, and the anesthesia provider. Only have facial plastic surgery by a surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstruction Surgery in an accredited outpatient facility or hospital. Anesthesia should be administered by a licensed, board certified anesthesiologist or certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA).

Without careful cash planning, the business and surviving owners may find themselves in a tough position to come up with the assets to fund the retiring owner’s departure, or buy the deceased or disabled partner’s interest in the business.

he reality of a dissolution of marriage is that no matter how “uncontested” it might seem, there is a cost for attorney’s fees. Each attorney bills an hourly rate and requires a retainer or a “down payment” to begin representation. I am always asked, “How much will this case cost me?” My response is always the same – it’s impossible to know for sure, since fees are based upon the time an attorney spends on a case. The more complex the case, the more the fees. The more litigation, the higher the fees. In reality, the clients and not the lawyers have control over how much a dissolution will cost.

So, what if you are for example a stay at home parent and your spouse is the one who is your sole means of support? How does someone who does not have an income afford representation? Florida law provides for those types of circumstances. Pursuant to Florida Statutes, an individual can request the court to award attorney’s fees from his/her spouse based upon a number of factors.

The law states: “A trial court may from time to time, depending on the circumstances surrounding each particular case award a reasonable attorney’s fee after considering the financial resources of both parties.”

This provision is based upon ability of one spouse to assist in the payment of fees, as well as the need of the requesting spouse. Since a divorce proceeding is a proceeding in equity, the court is required to consider basic rules of fairness and equity. Therefore, each party should have the same right of representation, regardless of their earning potential. In order to achieve this equity, the court will under certain circumstances require one spouse to contribute to the other spouse’s fees. Since Florida is a no fault state, the court will not take into consideration as a factor who initiated the proceedings.

In addition to the financial resources of each party, other relevant circumstances can be considered by the court. These include the scope and history of the litigation between the parties, the length of litigation and the merits of each party’s position in the case. In addition, the court can consider whether the litigation brought by one party has been done to primarily harass the other party. Or whether one of the parties has been attempting to delay or frustrate the proceedings. In other words, unnecessary or unreasonable litigation may cause that person to pay for wasting the courts time.

Habitual Toe Walkers

A

t the beginning of independent walking, toddlers may walk on their toes. Within three to six months the heel should be touching the ground during gait. Intermittent toe walking may be present in normal children until age six or seven.

Tightness of the calf muscle is the primary cause of the child that toe walks. Underlying neurological disorders have to always be ruled out. Most children who present as persistent toe walkers are able to lower their heels to the ground when standing but not walking. Walking heel-toe is possible for a few steps but usually awkwardly due to tight calf muscles. Toe walkers are more common in boys and in many cases is a cause of concern.

Treatment of habitual toe walkers is necessary to avoid problems that can occur secondary to compensating for the abnormal posture. Compensation may occur by hyperextending the knee, rotating the entire leg towards the outside or having the foot turn down or out, causing a flat foot. It is important to assess the degree of muscle tightness in the hips, knees and legs. Spontaneous resolution may take place in some cases. If the gastroc soleus (calf muscles) are not severely tight, physical therapy or stretching at home may be of benefit. If unresponsive, serial casting may be necessary.

Serial casting is a process in which the foot and leg are placed in a cast with the foot held in a neutral position. The muscle is placed under stretch while the cast is on and walking is strongly encouraged to help the muscles stretch. Children who are sedentary who are placed in a cast do not get the same benefits as those that are active.

Casts are applied every ten to 14 days until the muscle is slightly overstretched. It may take as little as two to as many as eight weeks to improve the muscle flexibility. The casts are applied one leg at a time to allow for the activity level needed for successful treatment. Following the casts, a night splint may be used for up to six months to maintain calf flexibility.

In rare cases, the muscle is too tight to respond to serial casting. Surgical lengthening of the Achilles tendon through three little holes in the skin may be needed. It is an outpatient procedure. Casts are applied postoperatively for six to eight weeks. Once healing takes place, physical therapy is provided to maintain lower extremity strength and flexibility. An excellent long-term prognosis is the norm.
