CORAL SPRINGS COMMISION AUGUST MESSAGE

With August upon us, it’s officially “Back to School” season; and although we are experiencing what appears to be the end of the pandemic, we are excited to welcome more “normalcy” in our city and nation. We recognize going back to school can be a stressful time for parent and students. It may be especially difficult for those who are suffering financial hardships, so here in Coral Springs, we are committed to assisting struggling families through our Back-to-School Drive. You can assist us with providing children in our community with a great start to a new school year by making a donation of school supplies. The Parks and Recreation Department is excited to kick-off free Family Fun Nights at the Coral Springs Gymnasium (2501 Coral Springs Dr.) starting August 11, 2021, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and every second Wednesday of the month thereafter. The new initiative is meant to bring the community together, providing a fun and interactive way for residents and guests to engage with one another. An important priority for us in Coral Springs is providing a platform for our residents to raise their voices and be heard. To maintain this commitment, we will host a ‘Slice of Springs’ community meeting, scheduled for August 12, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. This event gives residents the opportunity to interact with city staff and ask question and concerns related to issues affecting our community. Committed to providing the community with transparency, on Monday, August 23, 2021, representatives from the Department of Budget and Strategy will host a one-hour budget academy virtually via the video conferencing app Zoom, from 12:00-1:00 p.m. to and in-person at City Hall from 6:00-7:00 p.m. Residents will be provided with an overview of the city’s budget process, including how tax dollars are allocated and used for city services and operations. Residents can register to participate by visiting, www.coralsprings.org/academy.

August is also a month that serves to remind us that the 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season is still active, and it is critical for our community to be prepared beforehand to stay safe. Here are tips to ensure you and your family are prepared for this year’s hurricane season: • Make an emergency plan that includes your evacuation zone and make sure all members of your household know and understand the hurricane plan. • Gather supplies ahead of time including medication, disinfectant supplies, pet supplies, and all things you deem essential. • Strengthen your home by decluttering drains and gutters, bring outside furniture inside, and consider investing in hurricane shutters.

We continue to lend our support to the victims and families of the Surfside building collapse. We are incredibly proud of the men and women of our Fire Department who assisted in search and recovery efforts, as well as the support they have provided regarding the mental health of first responders on scene.

Our August Commission Meeting will take place on the 4th and the 18th at 6:30 p.m. inside of City Hall Commission Chambers. Residents are invited to attend in person or watch on CityTV, Blue Stream Channels 25, 25.7, 725 and on AT&T U-Verse channel 99. Meetings are also live streamed at www.coralsprings.org/citytv
