Back to School!

S

ummer vacations are a hallmark of modern life. After the final bell of the school year rings, children from across the country anxiously head home, often looking forward to trips abroad, excursions to the beach, local “staycations” or time at summer camps. This year was a bit different than most. Many students have not attended in-person classes for more than 18 months. This year, the transition back to school will be unlike any other. Most local kids return to school on August 18th this year. Like vacation options, the number of after-school programs has exploded. There is a myriad of activities and opportunities from which families to choose. Parents also have more choice in how their kids are educated today. Rather than simply dropping a child at the local bus stop, parents now decide between their local public school, charter schools, private schools, or online learning. Having so many choices can become overwhelming. If your family is like ours, you might not have everything planned just yet. Have no fear; Our City is here to help! Check out Our City’s Back to School Guide in this month’s issue. It contains helpful information on the best preschools, private schools, and educational programs in the area. We have included almost every afterschool activity you can think of. The material is curated to provide our readers with a valuable guide to help them get ready for the new school year. Remember to enjoy the last couple of weeks of summer. Before you know it, school will have already started!

outh Florida’s premier dance school is ready to get back to business as usual. For nearly thirty years, Dance theatre has been an industry leader in children’s dance. However, when Covid-19 arrived, health and safety concerns prevented all students from participating in their regular activities, including dance students. True to form, Dance Theatre adapted to the “new normal” in spectacular fashion, and kept its students dancing throughout the pandemic.

Dance Theatre's X-treme Team (DTX) posed with all of their awards from the Inspire National Finals in Nashville, TN

According to Dance Theatre’s owner Michelle Gerlick, the past eighteen months have given rise to the worst, but also the best of times for her dancers. “When Covid19 required us to temporarily discontinue all studio classes, my teachers and I had to learn how to conduct classes online. It was no simple task. We had hundreds of classes, involving thousands of dancers, and we had to ensure that everyone could access the proper “meetings”. When it was finally

deemed safe to return to the studios, we knew we had to do everything possible to protect the health of our dancers. First, we installed Reme Halo air cleansing systems in all HVAC units at every studio. They kill over 99% of all coronavirus particles, including Covid-19. Next, we divided our dance floors into six foot boxes to provide adequate social distancing. Finally, we established guidelines concerning masks, temperature stations, and sanitization.” Wondering whether all of these efforts worked? They did! Not only did Dance Theatre emerge from the depths of the Covid-19 pandemic without an outbreak, but there wasn’t a single case of transmission resulting from its’ class activities. Not a single one. “I’ll be honest.” Michelle continued “There were many days where I broke down and cried. I was worried about my students, their families, my family and friends, my business. But an amazing thing happened along the way. I realized just how special the bonds we’ve created at Dance Theatre really are. I witnessed how much we mean to our families, and in turn, how much they mean to us. When we asked them to Zoom, they did. When we were forced to film recital in small masked groups, they showed up and dazzled. When we invited them back into the studios, they ran in smiling, thrilled to be together. We’ve all lost so much through this ordeal, but we’ve gained something too. We’ve gained a greater appreciation for one another, for the precious gift of life, and for the privilege of seeing and instructing our amazing dancers. I’ve never been more inspired to continue doing what I love, and make Dance Theatre the greatest school on Earth.”

Dance Theatre Company (DTC) performing at Universal Orlando

For those of you unfamiliar with Dance Theatre, it offers a truly comprehensive program where dancers ages 3 through adult, beginner through advanced, can take classes in every possible discipline. They include the basics, like ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, hip hop, acrobatics, musical theater and pointe, as well as specialty classes like strength and flexibility, leaps and turns, etc. In addition, dancers who excel and aspire to become professionals also have options. First, they can join Dance Theatre’s performance company, DTC. This year they will perform the halftime show at the Dolphins vs. Jets game, Miami Heat basketball games, and travel to New York City to open the 95th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. In addition, the best dancers may be invited to join Dance Theatre’s elite competitive team, DTX, where they can travel to local, regional and national conventions and hone their skills against the best from other schools. DTX just returned from the Inspire National Championship in Nashville, Tennessee where the team brought home several top awards in virtually every category, with seven of their pieces chosen for the Inspire No Limits Challenge. Way to go girls!!!

If you are interested in joining Dance Theatre, there are several ways. First, you can visit their web-site, www.dancetheatre.net, choose your location, view the Fall Schedule, and register online at any time by filling out the simple form. Second, you may call the studio at 954-427-7217 (for the Parkland location in the Publix Center on 441 & Holmberg Rd.) OR 954-340-1544 (for the Heron Bay Publix location on Coral Ridge Drive) and speak to someone today. Finally, if you prefer to register in person, you can visit the studios during our Fall Registration Hours Friday August 13th from 5:00pm – 7:00pm & Saturday August 14th From 9:00am – 11:00am. Better hurry though, classes fill quickly!

In February, the community clubhouse was transformed into a vaccination site and fortunately, a large majority of residents were able to receive their shots.

“As soon as people were getting their shots they started asking about July 4th,” said Lauderdale West’s Steve Taylor. “We have a long tradition of celebrating the holidays together here.” So just last month, Taylor was thrilled to organize and announce the highly anticipated annual July 4th luncheon. About 150 residents donned their festive red, white, and blue garb and headed to the community’s main ballroom for a patriotic celebration featuring music, dancing, and plenty of food. Hamburgers and hot dogs with all the trimmings filled their tummies and conversations and laughter with friends and neighbors once again filled their hearts. “I’ve known a lot of these people for years,” added Taylor. “It’s just great to see them out and about again.” As much as the 55+ community was celebrating the nation’s Independence Day, they were celebrating their freedom as well after being in lockdown for so long. No one will take life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for granted.

Douglas High School students Olivia Alvarez and Spencer Brenner. The dynamic duo held their second annual book drive, collecting more than 2,700

books for several local schools After collecting donated books from local families, the pair meticulously went through each title to categorize them by reading level and theme. They then donated over 1,000 books to James S. Hunt Elementary School and another 1,000 to Coral Springs Pre K. The remaining books were donated to the Literacy Connection, Inc. for its Operation: R.E.A.D.. Literacy Connection is a non profit organization that seeks to empower parents and families through collaborative initiatives such as trainings and resources that encourage meaningful involvement in the academic careers of their children. Their goal is to ensure that they erase the “book gap” globally by distributing books

to children, providing family and community workshops, offering consulting services that instill the importance of reading and modeling strategies to support a developing reading culture. This is the second year that Spencer and Olivia have organized a book drive. Last August, the two collected more than 1,900 books and donated them in bundles of five to students at James S. Hunt Elementary School and Coral Springs Pre K – 8 during Broward County Public Schools grab-and-go meal pickup when students were attending school virtually. In addition, 400 books were donated to the Literacy Connection, Inc. mobile book bus, a nonprofit organization, who provides literacy resources to children and families.

ASK THE SHERIFF

BULLYING AWARENESS By Sheriff Gregory Tony

S

tudents will soon be back in school learning face to face, which may bring apprehension, excitement or a combination of both. I never take education lightly, and I am grateful that, despite the struggles I have faced to get to where I am today, education kept me on that road to success. Education shapes children’s lives, which is why it is vital to continue to ensure our children are safe and feel safe in their learning environment. Here are some essential safety tips to keep in mind as your children head back to in-person learning. Bullying is an issue that needs to be addressed. According to the National Bullying Prevention Center, one out of every five students reports being bullied. Your children have or will come in contact with bullying, either by experiencing it or witnessing it. Before it happens, it is important to advise your children neither to ignore it nor encourage it. Whether or not your child is a victim or a witness, they must understand the importance of reporting it. In the age of technology, cyberbullying

28 / August 2021 / OurCityMedia.com

is a new way to bully someone. Fifteen percent of students were bullied online or through text messages. It is essential to remind your children to think before they post, comment or share. Advise them never to share inappropriate photos, videos, or messages about themselves or other people. Keep your children safe by advising them to keep their accounts private and never give out personal information. Always keep close tabs on what your children are doing on their electronic devices and accounts. An unsafe environment in or out of school can affect an individual in many ways. Be aware of warning signs: a downward shift in grades difficulty sleeping self-destructive behavior a change in eating habits low self-esteem unexplainable injuries These could be signs that someone is being bullied. If you notice any changes, it is crucial to step in and help. Report every

incident of bullying or suspicious behavior. Ensure your children are aware of these resources and feel safe talking to you or a teacher: The SAFERWATCH app allows individuals to report suspicious activity and/or threats. Call the crisis hotline for teens at 211 or 954-567-TEEN (8336) to report an incident. In emergency situations, do not hesitate to call 911. The safety of your children, both physical and mental, is paramount to their future success. Make communicating with your children a priority. Create a safe place at home to talk to them about bullying either at school or online.

argie Purtic says that when Guardian ad Litem volunteer Chuck Davidson came to visit the little boy she was fostering, her four biological children would come downstairs, too. “He doesn’t just tend to our little foster guy,” Margie says. “He’s like everyone’s grandpa…I’m sure he’s like this with everyone.” Absolutely he is. Chuck carries a ball in his bag and is always ready to play. He invented the “secret Guardian ad Litem handshake” for a little boy who’d been shaken as a baby and lived in a therapeutic foster home. In his 25 years as a GAL, he’s represented well over 100 abused, abandoned and neglected children in dependency court, specializing in older youths. “I asked for older kids because those are the kids I could do the

TEE TO GREEN

How Good

is Your Alignment By By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional

T

he single most important – and frequently overlooked – full swing fundamental in golf is the setup position. So, here are some step-by-step tips for how to take your stance and achieve that perfect setup.

Alignment in the Golf Stance At address your body (feet, knees, hips, forearms, shoulders and eyes) should be positioned parallel to the target line. When viewed from behind, a right-handed golfer will appear aimed slightly left of the target. This optical illusion is created because the ball is on the target line and the body is not.

Foot Position Your feet should start out shoulder-width apart but adjust depending on whether you’re playing woods/long irons, middle irons or short irons. The feet should be shoulder-width (outside of the shoulders to the inside of the heels) for the middle irons. The short iron stance will be two inches narrower and the stance for long irons and woods should be two inches wider. The target-side foot should be flared toward the target from 20 to 40 degrees to allow the body to rotate toward the target on the downswing. The back foot should be square (90 degrees to the target line) to slightly open to create the proper hip turn on the back swing. Your flexibility and body rotation speed determine the proper foot placement.

Ball Position in the Golf Stance The position of the golf ball in one’s stance varies depending on the club used. The ball placement in your setup position varies with the club you select. Your middle irons should be played in the middle of your stance. The correct ball position for the long irons and fairway woods plus your driver is to be played off the inside left heel.

Keep Your Weight on the Balls of Your Feet Your weight should be balanced on the balls of the feet, not on the heels or toes. With short irons, your weight should be 60% on the target-side foot. For middle iron shots the weight should be 50/50 or equal on each foot. For your longest clubs, place 60% of your weight on the backside foot. This will help you swing the club on the correct angle on the back swing.

The Final Setup Positions Always practice proper alignment out on the driving range by placing two clubs down on the ground parallel to each other after you feel you are properly aligned to your intended target and see how well you are lined up. Better yet, while on the golf course ask your playing partner to stand behind you and see if you are properly aligned. The best way is to take a lesson from your local PGA Professional just on alignment. They are the experts in the game.

SCHOOL NEWS

Broward Education Foundation Launches Back to School Supply Drive

S

For Broward County Public Schools Students By Terry Jaillet

chool’s never out for Broward Education Foundation. The 501(c)3 charitable organization which is dedicated to serving students and teachers in Broward County Public Schools launched its annual school supply drive with BEFdrive.com to help equip students with the essential supplies they’ll need for the upcoming 2021-22 school year. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 200,000 students in Broward Schools were living in poverty, based on qualification and participation in the National School Lunch Program where students receive meals through school at a discount or for free. And 3 students in 4 arrive to class without the requisite school supplies necessary for learning according to

90% of teachers surveyed by the national non-profit Kids in Need Foundation. Covid drastically increased the need for basic school supplies for children in Broward County schools. For these students, school supplies are a luxury. “Broward Education Foundation remains incredibly responsive to the shifting needs in education within our community,” said Tim Curtin, board chair of Broward Education Foundation. “Last year, we reimagined our annual Back to School campaign into a fully virtual model to follow health protocols and delivered safely sealed individual basic school supply kits to students

throughout the county. It worked so well that we’re continuing this model with even more supplies for each student!" “Basic school supplies are always in demand, but even more so now,” said Shea Ciriago, executive director of Broward Education Foundation. “It’s vital we do everything in our power to provide students with the tools they need to stay engaged and focused. We are so appre-

ciative of all the individuals and local businesses who step up each and every year to support our resilient students who are so eager to learn.” Financial donations of any amount go a long way. A gift of just $10 safely equips one student for with the necessities for success. To sponsor an individual student, a class or an entire school please visit BEFdrive.com before August 31, 2021.

WISHING EVERYONE A PuzzleJunction.comWONDERFUL END OF SUMMER And a Great Start to the New School Year!

I

By State Rep. Christine Hunschofsky

t is so hard to believe that the summer is already slowly coming to an end and that the school year is about to start up again. Last year was such a challenging year for students, teachers, and parents. We are all looking forward to a better and brighter 2021/2022 school year! As we prepare for going back to school, the Florida Legislature approved a 10-day Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday this year to help alleviate the cost of school supplies. The sales tax holiday takes place July 30 - August 9, 2021 and covers a whole range of Back-to-School supplies. For a full list of qualifying items, please visit www. floridarevenue.com. Broward Public School students return to school on August 18, while teachers, administration, and staff go back on August 11. As we head back to school, please be mindful of the school zones and look out for students crossing the road or riding bicycles to get to school. Please allow yourself extra time in the morning so that you are not in a rush and can be fully attentive while driving. Last legislative session, I co-sponsored HB 229 by Representative Salzman that would study the safety of certain walking conditions for students. Unfortunately, the bill never made it to the floor, but Speaker Sprowl’s office agreed to fund the study. The study will be completed by September 2022 after which the results and recommendations will be reviewed and improvements can be implemented by the State Legislature. While this study will just provide more direction regarding hazardous walking conditions, each School District still has the ultimate authority to determine hazardous walking conditions and to provide alternative transportation. For more information on school transportation, visit www.browardschools.com/ transportation. I wish everyone a wonderful rest of the summer and a great start to the new school year. For those of you sending your children off to preschool, kindergarten, or college for the first time, it can be hard. As a mom of two children who are now grown up, I can certainly relate. However, be assured that your child can manage the new situation, and more importantly let them know that you know they can handle it and that you will always be there to support them. My team and I are always available to help in any way we can. Please reach out to us if we can be of assistance either via email at HDist096@myfloridahouse.gov or at 954-956-5600. We have an email newsletter we send out on a regular basis with information about District 96 and the legislative process. If you would like to be added to our newsletter list, please email us with “subscribe” in the subject line. Additionally, connect with me on social media to receive timely District 96 updates. You can find me on Facebook or Twitter @RepHunschofsky or Instagram @ChrisHunschofsky. Looking forward to hearing from you and staying in touch!

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

PARKLAND UPDATE By Mayor Rich Walker

W

hen I sat with my family and discussed the idea of running for Mayor more than a year ago, one of the things we all agreed upon was, if I became Mayor, I would always keep learning. Never reach a point at which I felt like I knew enough, but rather always seek to learn more than I now know. So as I continue as Mayor, one of the many things I have learned is everyone is concerned about those things that affect them in very specific ways. As we enter August and children prepare to return to school for what we hope will be a year that fits our definition of ‘normal’ more than last year, parents are concerned about safety. Will my son have to wear a face mask, will my daughter remember to use hand sanitizer, are the teachers going to take care of my child? All understandable concerns. So, what concerns me? Well, as a parent, I worry about all the same things you do. But that concern is tempered because I have

seen up close how committed our teachers and principals are to not only teaching our children as effectively as possible, but to ensuring their safety by applying all effective safety protocols. But as Mayor, I do not have the luxury of just worrying about one thing. I hear from residents who are concerned about home values, I hear from others concerned about athletic field safety, some want more services, others worry about the millage rate, and while some want more children’s programs, many want more senior programming. I worry about all of it. It all concerns me because I know each of these matters are of concern to some of our residents. It may seem like a lot—and if I am being truthful—it is. But I’m frequently reminded of that conversation with my family. One of the words that was repeated over and over was ‘service.’ My family loves Parkland. That is why my wife and I moved here, decided to raise our children here, and why our kids want to stay here. So when I had the opportunity to serve

the City we love, my family helped me decide that it was the right thing to do. None of the worrying, none of the concerns have swayed me from that decision. So if you are considering serving your community—whether in public service, volunteer service, maybe your HOA, maybe helping at church—I would encourage you to do so. There is nothing quite so rewarding as helping others. If you would like to share your thoughts about public service, or any other topic, I would love to hear from you. I can be reached via e-mail at rwalker@cityofparkland.org or via cell phone at (973) 3901453. Of course, I am frequently available monthly at Parkland businesses and love to talk with residents there. I encourage you to visit the City’s website cityofparkland.org and click on the social media icon you prefer so you can follow us to stay informed on events and helpful information.
