People Are People Wherever You Go

W

e have had the fortune to travel all around the world over the past twenty years. In fact, we have lived in the English countryside, in the urban mega-city of Hong Kong, in swanky Nashville, and in the suburbs of Atlanta. In addition to living in those places, we have visited many more, and seen people of all walks of life: from villagers in rural Thailand to wealthy Europeans vacationing in the Canary Islands. What has been remarkable, throughout our travels, is not the differences we share, but how surprisingly similar people truly are. Don’t get us wrong, there are certainly differences in culture everywhere. A dining delicacy in one country is often considered gross, or worse, in another. However, most people we have met have been primarily focused on the same few values: a safe, peaceful place to raise a family; a sense of pride or validation in their endeavors or occupation; a source of relief from the stresses of our modern world; and belonging to a community. In an era where the twin pressures of globalization and technological innovation often push us in uncomfortable directions and division, it is helpful to remember that there is likely a family just like yours in Nairobi or Singapore or Tehran with ambitions and dreams not too different than the family right next door. In the end, people are people everywhere you go. Sincerely,

Christy & Terry Jaillet

Her separation anxiety has improved, she was able to work for longer periods of time independently and the group sessions at T4K took Brigitte to a whole new level where she was able to overcome social obstacles,” says Brigitte’s mom, Stephanie. “Therapies 4 Kids ABA and Speech therapists worked to design a program to tailor Brigitte’s needs. Over the past 18 years, we have worked steadily toward our mission by not only treating ill, injured and orphaned animals, but also by educating the public about the natural world, being a responsible pet owner, and what to do when you find a wild animal. They offer wildlife camps for children, and on-site and off-site programming. They are also an information resource for people who find injured or lost wild animals, or have any questions regarding wildlife. They try to educate people about their local natural environment as well as how to best handle a wild animal they believe is orphaned. It is through the dedication of our numerous volunteers, small staff, and the generosity of individual and corporate donors that they are able to provide many services to the community. Tickets for the Brunch with the Bunnies event are: Members at $13 and Future Members at $15; infants under 1 are free. Register directly on their website at www.sawgrassnaturecenter.org. The event is open to all high school students who live in Coral Springs or who attend local high schools: Coral Springs High, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High, Coral Glades High, Coral Springs Charter and J.P. Taravella High. Students who are home-schooled or attend private schools and live in Coral Springs are also welcome. “Our goal is to provide an educational opportunity for high school students to ask questions of their elected officials from local, state and federal levels, while encouraging an interest in the workings of government,” said Joyce Campos, 24 APRIL 2019 | OUR CITY | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

as the students see the benefits of having their voices heard. Our average attendance each year is around 1400 students,” added Campos. All topics of local interest are discussed at the event. At past Teen Political Forums, the students have asked questions covering dress code in school, quality of meals served, teacher salaries, SAT testing, school auditoriums, the status of a school bond issue, among other topics. Teens from Coral Springs benefit greatly from attending this forum. “Local teens who comprise the Steering Committee get to develop their leadership skills as they organize the event, under minimal adult supervision. They research their

elected officials and their backgrounds and learn more about how government is conducted at various levels. Other students who attend the event get to interact directly with these elected officials whom they otherwise may not have an opportunity to meet. They ask questions and get answers to issues that are important to them. It is important for them to know that their voices can be heard and make an impact on those who make decisions,” said Campos. n Students may receive service hours for attending the Forum and the school with the highest attendance will win cash for their school. Q&A: Ready for a run? There’s much to know before you go. According to recent statistics, U.S. participation in running and jogging has grown 70% over the past decade. In 2018, it was estimated that over 60 million Americans were involved in the sport. The number of people running in non-traditional events like warrior and color runs has increased dramatically in the past five years. Running properly is of utmost importance, regardless of whether you’ve been running for years or just getting started, or if you’re running just for recreation or are serious about the sport and have goals to break personal bests. And sometimes it requires some trial and error to figure out what will work best for you. We asked Leonardo Oliveira, MD, sports health and running medicine specialist, to answer key questions about Leonardo Oliveira, MD running, and how runners of all types can prepare.

Q. Is running good for everyone? A. Running is a great way to boost your metabolism, burn calories and improve your cardiovascular health. But it’s important to run with proper technique and incorporate warm up and recovery exercises. Q. Are there different types of runners? A. Runners can fall into two groups. • Endurance athletes who are always training for their next marathon or striving to improve their performance • Weekend warriors who enjoy running for recreation and fitness Q. What are typical running injuries? A. Runners typically present with overuse injuries. Overuse injuries result from increased demand over time on the muscles, bones and tendons.

Q. How can a sports health specialist help? A. During your consultation, a sports health physician will address structural and functional issues that can lead to injuries. These include your individual capabilities; such as muscle strength and flexibility, as well as external factors; such as environmental conditions, running surfaces and shoe wear. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Oliveira in Coral Springs or any other Cleveland Clinic Florida sports health specialist, call 800.597.2037 or visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/ SportsHealth to schedule online. For more information about Cleveland Clinic Florida Sports Health, visit ClevelandClinicFlorida.org/ SportsHealth.

Q. Is running bad for your joints? A. Running can help with weight maintenance and weight loss. This actually decreases the load on your joints and helps to prevent arthritis.

Hunter Douglas SunScreen: The woven vinyl-coated fiberglass screening manufactured for the primary use of reducing solar heat gain and glare. They absorb and dissipate up to 70 percent of the sun’s heat and glare before it reaches the window and work whether windows are open or closed. Its weave is tight enough to stop tiny insects but open enough to allow cool breezes to flow through. Opacities variate from 14% being most see through to 0% where it offers full blackout. Hunter Douglas fabrics are GREENGUARD-Certified: People spend about 90% of their time indoors, where air can be 2-5 times more polluted than outdoor air. Products can release thousands of potentially harmful chemicals such as volatile organic compounds (VOC) into the indoor environment. Once airborne, VOCs can easily be inhaled by building occupants. Poor indoor air quality can trigger a number of health problems, including asthma and allergy attacks, headaches and flu-like symptoms. GREENGUARD Certification helps identify healthier products and ensures that a product has met some of the world’s most rigorous and comprehensive standards for low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into indoor air. Hunter Douglas Quality and Price: All solar screen shades are not equal. The materials used by Hunter Douglas are superior to those used by cheaper brands. Tube size and strength are important. Less expensive quality tubes will bow and warp. The shade will not function as it should and will “run off” unevenly and cause the fabric to be damaged by the gears. Inexpensive fabrics will curl on the sides and create that bowed effect.

The Sawgrass Nature Center Announces The Blooming” Of Its 3rd Annual Orchid & Plant Festival BY NICOL JENKINS

T

he Sawgrass Nature Center will be holding its 3rd Annual Orchid & Plant Festival. Taking place from 9:30am to 4:30pm on Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7, the Festival will allow orchid enthusiasts, and plant lovers in general, the opportunity to vividly experience – and purchase – diverse, colorful and fragrant varieties of orchids, tropical plants, herbs and fruit trees sold by over 20 local vendors. The Sawgrass Nature Center & Wildlife Hospital is located at 3000 Sportsplex Drive Coral Springs, Florida 33065. The orchids and tropical plants, though, are only the beginning. This exciting two-day event will be held in Coral Springs and will offer something for everyone to enjoy, including garden art, food vendors, cocktails, birds of prey, live animals, music and much more! All proceeds will benefit the Sawgrass Nature Center and Wildlife Hospital, the non-profit organization that provides environmental education programs focused on South Florida’s unique, fragile Everglades and its many resident species. The wildlife hospital also provides expert rehabilitative care for injured and orphaned native wildlife at no cost to the public.

The Sawgrass Nature Center’s mission is to educate the public about South Florida’s unique culture, environment and the many species it contains, to promote healthy living, outdoor activity and to provide excellent care for sick, injured or orphaned native wildlife. They want to foster awareness and appreciation of wildlife, particularly urban wildlife found here in South Florida. Each year, people bring approximately 700 animals into their wildlife

hospital, and they provide educational presentations to approximately 7,000 students. Volunteers donate roughly 8000 hours of their time annually to help us meet our goals. “The Orchid and Plant Festival is our major Spring fundraiser to enable us to continue our mission of environmental education and to provide excellent care for sick, injured or orphaned native wildlife,” said Robin Reccasina, Operations & Education Director at Sawgrass Nature & Wildlife Hospital. “This event will offer over 20 vendors featuring beautiful orchids, native and tropical plants, plant supplies, and garden adornments. There will be food and beverages for purchase as well as music and animal encounters.” The event continues to grow each year, and attracts orchid lovers from Palm Beach, Broward and Dade counties. The entry fee for the Orchid Festival is $7 per person and includes entry to the center’s exhibits. Parking is free. Join Blue Stream as a proud sponsor of this wonderful event. MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR: PARKLAND

Parkland Update MAYOR CHRISTINE HUNSCHOFSKY n April, the Florida Legislature is in the second part of its 60-day session, which ends May 3, 2019. While most people look to local government regarding zoning, community regulations and quality of life issues in their cities, state government has been preempting local control the past few years on issues such as microcell tower location, charter schools and others. State government also continues to work on preempting local control regarding short-term rental regulations and Community Redevelopment Agencies. Some mandates that come from Tallahassee do not come with funding—adding an additional financial burden on local government. While some issues are more conducive to being legislated statewide, others are better legislated locally. For example, residents in the Panhandle will have different needs and wants from their city than the residents of South Florida. Even within South Florida, every community has its own attributes that make it special. By mandating a one-size fits all approach to communities, the legislature takes away local control and inhibits the individual qualities and features of each community. If local residents do not like state-mandated laws, they have to go to Tallahassee and speak to a majority of the State Representatives and State Senators, most of whom live in other areas of the state, and convince them to vote a different way. When issues are controlled locally, residents just need to contact their city commission, which usually consists of five to seven members. It is much easier to attend local city commission meetings than numerous committee meetings in Tallahassee. Parkland has adopted a legislative platform and we continue to monitor bills coming out of the Florida Legislature. To follow what is going on this legislative session, please visit https://www.flsenate.gov/Session/Bills/2019 and https://www.myfloridahouse.gov/Sections/Bills/bills.aspx. I would like to thank our State Representative Kristin Jacobs and our State Senator Kevin Rader for always supporting our community so strongly in Tallahassee. Representative Jacobs is one of 120 Representatives and Senator Radar is one of 40 Senators, but they have earned the respect of so many of their colleagues and they are important voices for us in Tallahassee. Our next City Commission meetings are Wednesday, April 3, and Wednesday, April 17. Commission workshops and recognitions start at 6:00pm and regular Commission meetings begin at 7:00pm. You can view all meeting agendas at www.cityofparkland,org/cc. Keep up with Parkland events by following www.facebook.com/copfl and subscribing to our e-blast “Parkland on Tap” at cityofparkland.org/notifyme to ensure you never miss an event. I love hearing from residents, so please share your thoughts and comments with me at chunschofsky@cityofparkland.org.

t’s finally that time of year in South Florida when it’s not yet too hot (and certainly not cold) for everyone to start enjoying some time outside of their homes. Outdoor spaces are quite popular and with so many items available online and in popular retail stores, creating an inviting space is extremely cost-effective and offers a relaxing environment for the entire family to enjoy.

First things first, it’s important to clean and declutter the area before adding a comfortable seating area. For décor purposes it’s recommended to blend the exterior with the interior by utilizing similar colors, materials, and styles; therefore, expanding a home’s living space. Including weatherappropriate pillows and rugs along with some lighting and perhaps a fire pit and/or a waterfall item will soften and create a tranquil atmosphere. After giving your patio some panache, enhance it by freshening up the landscape. Planting flowers, vegetables and herbs will add beauty, life, color, and fragrance to any patio, deck or balcony. Believe it or not many annuals need full sun and some fruit trees thrive in warm climates. But if you’re not ready to get your hands dirty just go to your local home improvement store and buy ready grown potted ones. The Bougainvillea is the queen of large flowering shrubs. The colorful year-round plant can be planted in a variety of ways such as a tree, on a vine, or in a planter making it work well in any area.

April Showers Bring May Flowers – Get Your Outdoor Space Ready for Spring! CONTINUED FROM P. 39

Pentas are one of the easiest flowers to grow in Florida. The low-maintenance blooms produce a rainbow of clusters which are irresistible to butterflies and hummingbirds. Evolvulus, also called Blue Daze, always make a good choice for Florida gardens because it is drought tolerant. Mexican Heather has become a Florida garden staple with its shiny, dark green foliage accented with charming lavender-pink or white flowers. Let’s not forget Florida’s official state flower, the Coreopsis, it is one of the cheeriest plants to grow and can be enjoyed all year.

Wrap herbs in ribbon or create a special homemade infusion to bring the hostess when invited to a springtime soiree. Another favorite thing to add to the outdoor space for spring and summer entertaining are heat loving herbs like basil, tarragon, thyme, sage, and parsley. Not only are they great for recipes like gazpacho, but they make perfect garnishes and fun herb-infused vodkas too. Serve them up at all your parties or give them as gifts. With Memorial Day upon us, use some of these inspiring ideas for spending some time outdoors on those hot spring/summer nights. Regardless if you are entertaining or just relaxing under the stars, it’s easy and affordable to dress up your outdoor space.

Holocaust Reflection and Resource Center Opens Eyes and Hearts BY STACEY BOMSER

O

ne of the world’s most unique and comprehensive Holocaust museums is here in our backyard. The Craig and Barbara Weiner Holocaust Reflection and Resource Center, located within the Alvin Sherman Library on the Nova Southeastern University campus, is a one-of-a-kind experience, offering young and old the opportunity to learn about the atrocities of the Holocaust and why we must practice tolerance and respect to ensure history does not repeat itself. The exhibit is the work of Weston residents Craig and Barbara Weiner. The couple has always felt that the best way for current and future generations to learn the importance of having greater respect for one another, and greater tolerance for our fellow humankind, is through Holocaust education. The Weiners began devoting their lives to Holocaust education in 2012. After taking several trips to Eastern Europe, where they saw school groups from other countries visiting Holocaust memorials and touring concentration camps, they determined that more education was needed here in the United States. “For our first project, we brought a guide from the Buchenwald Concentration Camp Memorial to Florida to provide students with a firsthand lesson,” explains Craig. “Over five months’ time, he taught in roughly 100 schools. It was simply unheard of to make this happen. The program was so unique and impactful.” Recognizing the success of that education program, the Weiners approached NSU to partner with them to create the Holocaust Reflection Contest. It is open to middle and high school students statewide. Students may

enter in one of three categories: essay, film or artwork. Now in its fifth year, Craig says last year they received so many entries that they needed 76 judges to judge all the submissions. But the project the Weiners are most proud of is the one that bears their name, the Craig and Barbara Weiner Holocaust Reflection and Resource Center. It has truly been a labor of love for the couple who have traveled the world curating artifacts and collaborated with renowned institutions such as the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. The Center has been fully funded in perpetuity, insuring that it can never close and will be there for future generations to learn from and experience. Empowering Youth with Empathy and Education The primary purpose of the Holocaust Reflection and Resource Center is education. The Weiners, as well as other trained docents, run a day-long program for students in grades eight to twelve. According to Craig, the program begins with a 90-minute tour of the Center during which the students are led from exhibit to exhibit and explained the significance of the various images and artifacts. That is followed by an hour-long session either meeting with a Holocaust survivor or watching and discussing the documentary The Search for the White Rose, which the Weiners collaborated in producing. “The film is about a group of nonJewish German students who had the courage to stand up against Hitler and the Nazis. They serve as wonderful role models for today’s students to learn the importance of standing up and rejecting all forms of hate – racism, anti-Semitism, bigotry, and intolerance,” states Craig.

The program concludes with a special presentation on the Auschwitz Barbara and Craig Weiner established the Album. “It’s Holocaust Reflection and Resource Center the only Department. album in One of the main messages of the existence that illustrates the selection process at the concentration camps and Center is that of activism. “We can’t spend our lives being bystanders,” states depicts individual family situations,” Craig. “The Holocaust could have been shares Barbara. “It’s very touching and prevented if the world had not been impactful to students.” bystanders. THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR ADVANCED PANCREATIC AND LIVER CANCER PATIENTS Patient’s once diagnosed with locally advanced Pancreatic and Liver Cancers were given little hope and often offered limited treatment options all with certain short life expectancies despite the treatment they were receiving. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation, also known as IRE or NANO-KNIFE for short, has changed all that. Patients are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies based on recently published reports. Though currently used in patients with known locally advanced disease it has now found its place in the operating room and used when patients are “unexpectedly” found to have more advanced disease than pre-operative imaging shows.

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director of Institute for Breast Cancer Prevention

Dr. Robert Donoway, a surgical oncologist trained at SloanKettering, is the only surgeon performing these procedures. During the procedure, in the operating room, after it has been determined that the patient’s tumor is non-resectable, fine needle probes are placed through the tumor using ultrasound guidance to ensure there is no injury to critical structures such as the Bile Ducts and Portal Vein. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is delivered through the probes in 90 microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The procedure lasts between 1 & 2 hours using imaging to follow the ablative process. After the procedure is completed the probes are removed and the patient is taken to ICU step down for a 24-hour observation period. Most patients are discharged in 2 or 3 days following surgery and because there is no major surgery to recover from they are able to start postoperative neo-adjuvant type chemotherapy and radiation sooner. After 3 to 6 months of combination treatment patients are re-evaluated and restaged. A number have been converted to Resection candidates, which is still deemed the standard of care. Preliminary results have been very encouraging and have more than doubled many patients' life expectancy. Clinical trials are ongoing to use new novel agents including monoclonal antibodies and vaccines as the next line of treatment in this highly selected & heavily pre-treated group. Dr. Donoway is the only surgeon performing this procedure in Florida. For more information about Dr. Donoway visit www.AtlasOncology.com

MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF: MARGATE

Spring Safety CHIEF JON SHAW

H

appy April everyone! I hope that you are all off to a wonderful spring and are able to get outside to enjoy our beautiful South Florida weather. I can’t believe that we are slowly tiptoeing towards the end of the school year and as soon as we turn around, summer break will be upon us! As a continued effort to educate and provide some useful information to our residents and those living in and around our community, I have compiled some safety tools, or tips, (which I also complete at my home, as well) for you to keep in your toolbox, as you continually work on keeping your family and home safe. Let’s begin with the exterior of your home, the portion of your home that can be seen by everyone and anyone. Please be sure that you keep your garage door closed (completely) at all times! Even if you are home, the sight of an open and empty garage door, can be very appealing to those individuals who are seeking opportunities to commit crime. Check to make sure that all of your windows and doors are closed AND locked each night before you head to bed (and each morning as you head to work)! The appearance of a well secured home is key! Exterior lights should be left on throughout the overnight hours for good visibility around your home. Do you have an alarm system and/or video surveillance system? Be sure that not only are they both properly working, with new batteries installed, if needed. Be sure that your surveillance system is recording! A good recommendation is to use a system that keeps record for a minimum of 72 hours (or more). Plan a day each week that you complete your own “residential safety check”. Take those 5 minutes to secure your home and keep you and your loved ones safe. As always, should you ever have any questions about safety tips and keeping your home safe, please contact the Margate Police Department at (954) 972-7111 and speak with an officer in our Community Relations Unit or if you see an officer out in the city, feel free to say hello and spark up a safety conversation! Margate Chief of Police, Jonathan Shaw

Coral Springs Welcomes New Mayor BY LYNNE MARTZALL

S

cott J. Brook was sworn in by long-time friend and colleague, Judge Carroll Kelly, as Mayor for the City of Coral Springs during a ceremony held in Commission Chambers on Tuesday, March 19, 2019. After opening remarks by City Attorney, John J. Hearn, and the Pledge of Allegiance led by Vice Mayor Joy Carter, the Star-Spangled Banner was performed by the Coral Springs Charter School Encore. Mayor Brook provided remarks, thanking his many supporters, especially his family. As a proud resident of Coral Springs since 1997, Brook’s values are rooted in his love of family. A proud father and grandfather, Brook and his wife, Brenda, have five children and three grandchildren. As a partner in the law firm, Brodzki, Jacobs and Brook, he advocates for families and parents leading community conversations that encourage Coral Springs residents, business owners and visitors to work together like family. Brook is quite familiar with service in the City of Coral Springs, he served on as a City Commissioner from 2002-2006 and served as the City’s Mayor from 2006 to 2010. During his term as Mayor, the City of Coral Springs became the first city in the USA to

receive the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. During his terms of service, Brook consistently demonstrated his commitment to bridging the gap between the citizens of Coral Springs and local government, further promoting transparency and a united community. Brook graduated from Tulane University in 1985, and he remained at Tulane to obtain an M.B.A. on a fellowship. Brook graduated from the University

of Miami School of Law in 1992. As a member of the Florida Bar, Brook has practiced successfully before the Florida Supreme Court, the First District Court of Appeal, the Judges of Compensation Claims of the tri-county area, as well as the Dade and Broward State Courts. Brook is also a private mediator. n Mayor Brook will host office hours at City Hall on Monday, April 15, from 3:30-5:30 p.m. (meetings will be held in 15-minute increments) or to schedule an appointment, please call (954) 344-5911.
