Travel Tips Top 10 Reasons Why a Cruise Should be Your Next Vacation By Mary Beth Casey

irst time customers are always curious about cruising. We receive questions about everything from the overall cost to how to compare cruise lines and ships, and whether cruises are good for children. Here are the Top 10 reasons why your next vacation should be a cruise: Reason #10: Enjoy some pampering. Many of our clients take advantage of the services onboard such as room service, full service spas and beauty salons, gyms and outdoor exercise space, romantic dining venues, as well as watching shooting stars on a crystal clear night. Reason #9: Dining to suit your mood. Each cruise line and ship provides a variety of dining options. Your choices include casual buffet, main dining room with full menu, specialty restaurants (from Asian to Italian and pub fare to steakhouse), and quick bites (including cupcake shops and hot dog stands). Reason #8: Pack once, visit many ports. A benefit of cruising is the ability to spend less time packing and unpacking (as in motor trips), yet still enjoy the excitement of seeing multiple ports and destinations. Cruising allows you to hang up/put away your clothes ONCE and get to the best part…fun Reason #7: Children love ships. A key benefit of cruising is that most cruise lines cater to families and have not only built the ships with fun family activities in mind (flow riders, movies under the stars, cartoon characters) but they have also created camps for kids of all ages (very young, tweens and teens). Reason # 6: Something for everyone. Whether you are interested in a quiet experience (cards, lectures, walking tours) or a high energy vacation (zip lining, dancing, shopping), you can find a cruise that allows everyone to feel that they are getting the vacation they dreamed about! Reason #5: Something new to see every day. A unique aspect of cruising is that your “hotel” travels to different locations so that you can literally try/learn/view something new each day. From port to port, you can experience a wide variety of nationalities, sites and history…unlike any other vacation! Reason #4: Suit your vacation interest and timing. Cruising provides many vacation options. You can choose from short (3-5 days) or long (21+ days) in warm climates (Caribbean, Hawaii, and South Pacific) or cool (Alaska, New England, and Transatlantic). There are also a variety of themed cruises such as author lectures, music, culinary, sports and honeymoons! Reason #3: As active as you desire. You can participate in as many activities as you want (shore excursions, onboard games, theme nights) or as little as you desire (reading your book, lounging in the spa or eating dinner under the stars on your balcony). Cruising is designed to allow you to create the experience that you want to have while sailing. Reason #2: Value. Cruising is an all-inclusive vacation. For a single price, guests enjoy their accommodations, meals, entertainment and transportation to multiple destinations. And with a variety of itineraries, staterooms and cruise lines to choose from, you can find a choice to meet your vacation budget. Cruising gives you more fun for your money! And the #1 reason for booking a cruise: Professional travel consultation. One of the most important reasons our clients favor cruise vacations is the knowledge, expertise and consultation they receive when booking with Expedia CruiseShipCenters. Our team of professionally trained Cruise Consultants ensures that you get the right cruise at the best possible price. The training and education of our consultants has earned us leadership in the industry. And our preferred relationships with the world’s leading cruise lines have allowed us to create and pass along incredible savings to our clients.

here’s more to YouTube than simply watching silly videos of singing dogs and dancing cats. Today, more and more municipalities are turning to this social media site to share important information with residents. The City of Weston’s YouTube Channel posts videos on everything from upcoming events to critical health and safety information. The City of Weston YouTube Channel was created as yet another means of getting City messages across to residents. “YouTube is such a popular way to get information out, especially to younger residents who prefer to watch a short video than read an article,” explains Denise Barrett, Director of Communications for the City of Weston. It was her department that created the YouTube channel. “It allows us to promote upcoming events and city projects, as well as highlight our different departments and utilize our staff as best we can,” explains Barrett. The City’s Department of Parks and Recreation has already been highlighted in videos on the lightning predictor warning system and Weston’s “beach” volleyball courts at Regional Park. The Public Works department assisted in the production of informational videos with tips on proper tree pruning and how to prevent flooding on your street. Just before school started, a video on school crossing safety was aired. “YouTube provides us with an incredible opportunity to inform residents about all of the wonderful events and programs taking place in our city,” notes Barrett who is planning a series of videos to promote the popular Movies In The Park series. “We can also use YouTube to showcase some of the unique features in Weston such as the heritage plaques at Library Park.”

You can subscribe to the City of Weston YouTube Channel by visiting or by clicking the YouTube link on the City of Weston homepage at There is no fee to use YouTube. The videos will also be broadcast on the city’s government access cable channels; Advanced Communications customers can tune to Channel 25, Comcast customers to Channel 78, and Direct Path customers to Channel 62.

Community News Weston Art Guild Supports Arts and Artists in Our Community By Stacey Bomser

he Weston Art Guild is celebrating its sixth season this year which includes a special showing at the Weston Branch Library. The exhibit will feature 40-50 pieces of original art work created by local artists. The Weston Art Guild is comprised of professional and non-professional visual artists living in Weston and the surrounding communities. These talented artists work in various mediums. “We have painters who work with acrylic, oil and watercolors. We have sculptors who work with stone, clay and wood. Other members include photographers, stained glass artists, fabric artists and jewelry makers,” explains Joyce Albrecht, President of the Weston Art Guild and one of its founding members. The non-profit, all volunteer visual arts organization was formed in 2005 with the purpose of creating a cultural atmosphere in the community by educating the public on the importance of all forms of visual arts. In addition, the Guild provides members with the opportunity to meet other artists and exchange information on art events. It also provides outlets for members to show and sell their work. Members enjoy the opportunity the learn about other art forms. Each monthly meeting includes an art demonstration. “The purpose of the demos is to give members exposure to other artists’ techniques,” explains Albrecht. “It helps the members to get out of their studios, meet other artists in their community, and see what other artists are creating.” Albrecht says the Guild has arranged for some exciting demonstrations this upcoming season. Highlights include a fabric artist who will demonstrate how to make a fine art wall hanging, a glass artist showing how stained glass pieces are made, and a wire artist demonstrating creations on baskets and glasses. In addition, several painters have been invited to demonstrate watercolor work and oil paintings. Each season the Art Guild arranges several exhibits to showcase the tremendous talent of its members. Past venues have included the Sunrise Civic Center Gallery, Pembroke Pines Glass Gallery and the Coral Springs Museum of Art. “We are really excited to be featuring a showing here in Weston this season,” states Albrecht. In March and April 2012, the Weston Art Guild will host an exhibit at the Weston Branch Library. About 40-50 pieces of original artwork will be on display throughout the library utilizing the library’s new hanging system. The artwork will be judged and prizes awarded at the reception on March 14th. Any artists living in the Weston area are invited to attend the first Weston Art Guild meeting of the season on Monday, September 26th. The Guild meets the last Monday of each month, September through May, from 7-9pm in the upstairs meeting room at Rick Case Hyundai in Weston. Dues are $35 per year and this includes entry to all exhibits.

Members of the Weston Art Guild work in various mediums. Pictured here is an acrylic painting by Rasma Yaffa (top left), oil painting by Clara Hada (top right), watercolor by Judy Nunno (bottom left), clay sculpture by Joyce Albrecht (bottom middle) and watercolor by Phyllis Casper (bottom right).

Community News Weston Residents Win for Essays on Arts Impact By Stacey Bomser

September 2011 | To Advertise in Our City Weston, Please call 954-306-1007 |

t’s no secret that the Weston community has a strong appreciation for the arts. Three Weston residents were recently recognized for their personal stories on how the arts has impacted their lives. They were all winners of the first ever Faces of the Arts in Broward Challenge. Designed to promote and stimulate public awareness and appreciation of the arts in Broward County, Faces of the Arts in Broward Challenge was sponsored by the Cultural Foundation of Broward. Participants were asked to submit an essay, video or photograph of their experience at a cultural event or organization in Broward County that has moved or changed their life in a positive way. Entries were judged on content, development/organization, relevance to the theme, and creativity/originality. Anna Maria Ukleja of Weston was one of the nine winners. Her winning essay entitled “A Poet of Hearts” was about a magnificently-rewarding and life-changing Florida Youth Orchestra (FYO) concert at Bailey Concert Hall which inspired her to become a volunteer for FYO and to enroll in piano lessons. gentle, fine, young lady she is today.” The winners were recognized by the Broward Cultural Foundation and the Broward Cultural Council during the Symphony of the Americas’ Summerfest concert at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Anna Maria Ukleja and the eight other winners were presented with four tickets to a cultural event in Broward County. The Cultural Foundation of Broward is a non-profit organization of member companies and individuals who have a philanthropic commitment to the arts and recognize the connection between cultural and creative success. The Broward Cultural Council is a volunteer advisory board appointed by the Broward County Commission with the mission of enhancing the community’s cultural environment through the development of the arts. Two other Weston residents received Honorable Mentions. A gong player inspired Scott Garrett to enter the contest. He wrote: “Listening to the mysterious, wonderful, fascinating sounds of the gong player at an outdoor concert at the Renaissance Festival, allowed me to travel to exotic far away places without every leaving Broward County.” Grecia Garrett’s photo and essay about a Florida Youth Orchestra violinist named Joanna earned her an Honorable Mention. Grecia wrote: “As Joanna plays her violin, she paints beautiful stories with her warm, soothing music. he brilliant young musicians, under the masterful direction of the passionate and ebullient conductors, charted a timeless musical course for the audience to embark on. The orchestra drew upon myriad classical and contemporary rhythms on an afternoon of uncommon musical beauty. The audience was instantly partaking in an emotional exposition of indefinable mood of musical mastery, painstakingly yet gently enhanced by the conductors’ rich melodic sensibility. This concert surpassed my expectations! It changed my life! While the young musicians were traversing a variety of captivating international rhythms in perfect harmony, my heart was teased with indescribable emotions. When I suddenly realized that my children were among that talented group, I sat still, being afraid to close my eyes lest I and those around me would be overcome with emotion. These feelings inspired me to become an instant passionate volunteer for the FYO’s ambitious programs and to enroll in piano lessons the very next day!   Chopin was a poet of piano. FYO is a poet of hearts. Let the poetry ring out!

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession toWest Broward”

Dear Friend, want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the right. Twenty years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s a simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You Benefit from an Amazing Offer-Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 9/30/11) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $35. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell YOU THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT. Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Mylene and Johanna – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Windmill Health Center and it’s at 17160 Royal Palm Blvd., Suite 1 in the Windmill Professional Plaza. Our phone number is 954-217-4881. Call Mylene, Johanna or Lindsay for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you. For more information regarding our services please visit our website If you would like to email us with your questions, you may reach us at – Rick Behar, D.C. P.S. I am also offering the second family member for only $27. P.P.S. Your time is as valuable as mine. That’s why I have a no-wait policy. You will be seen within minutes of your appointment.

community news Crime Prevention Van Makes Streets Safer By Stacey Bomser

he streets of Weston may soon be safer thanks to the City’s new Crime Prevention Van. Weston is the first community in the county to receive BSO’s interactive mobile unit. “We wanted this van to get more residents involved in crime prevention,” states Deputy Kari Pallotto, BSO Crime Prevention Specialist, who coordinates the crime prevention van’s appearances. “I felt if we physically brought our programs into neighborhoods it would be more convenient for residents to participate.” The beauty of this program is that it is completely mobile and provides an interactive experience to educate both children and adults on an array of crime prevention tactics and topics. “We are able to offer a variety of programs on everything from internet safety to neighborhood watch programs to child fingerprinting services,” states Deputy Pallotto. The van houses an incredible amount of equipment. It features three TV’s, a DVD player, surround sound and gaming stations. It even includes a pint-sized police car (battery operated) to teach children, and parents, about aggressive driving prevention. While the kids love the games and toys, adults are benefitting from the van’s educational tools.

According to Deputy Pallotto, officers can project crime statistics or trends using the van’s video equipment. “When teaching a women’s self defense class, I am able to show the videos and power point through the van’s TVs.” So far the response has been incredible. “Everyone loves it,” states Deputy Pallotto. She is already receiving many requests for appearances. To arrange a visit by the crime prevention van to your neighborhood or function, call Deputy Pallotto at (954) 389-2030 or email her at There is no charge for this service.

You don’t need to spend a fortune to feel like a million bucks!

community news Weston BSO Hosts Successful Operation Medicine Cabinet & Shred-A-Thon By Stacey Bomser

September 2011 | To Advertise in Our City Weston, Please call 954-306-1007 |

eston residents took advantage of the recent Operation Medicine Cabinet and Shred-A-Thon event hosted by the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Hundreds of people stopped by the Weston Police Services Center to drop off papers and pills to be safely destroyed. Operation Medicine Cabinet provides the opportunity to rid your medicine cabinet of unused, unnecessary or expired prescription medication. Fifty-eight thousand pills were collected at the Weston event. Participants received $5 gift cards to local stores and pharmacies for their diligent efforts to safely dispose of unused prescription drugs. Prescription drug abuse is on the rise in Florida, especially among teens. That’s because prescription drugs are easier for kids to get than illegal drugs. For many, it’s as simple as opening the medicine cabinet. Officials say one in five teens has abused a prescription pain medication and prescription drugs have killed 300% more people than illegal drugs. Programs such as Operation Medicine Cabinet with its no questions asked policy are proving successful in keeping prescription drugs off the streets.

BSO’s Shred-A-Thon program is helping reduce crime in another way. It allows residents to shred sensitive documents as a pro-active step to reducing the risk of identity theft. Weston residents shredded 18,240 pounds of personal documents, check stubs, credit card offers, receipts and other materials that might contain sensitive data. The Broward Sheriff’s Office hosts various Operation Medicine Cabinet and Shred-A-Thon events throughout Broward County. If you missed the Weston event, visit to see upcoming event dates and locations. For more information about prescription drug “take back” programs please contact BSO Prescription Drug Prevention Specialist Jonathan Fishman at (954) 5571124 or email jonathan_ If you find yourself a victim of identify theft or have a stolen credit card or checks, visit identity_theft.cfm.

community news Police Services Academy Students Explore Law Enforcement Services By Stacey Bomser

September 2011 | To Advertise in Our City Weston, Please call 954-306-1007 |

hen asked what they did over the summer, most kids share stories of favorite summer camp experiences or family vacations. But for the 29 students enrolled in the Weston University – Broward Sheriff’s Office Police Services Academy, summer memories are of dusting for fingerprints and tracking bullet trajectories. The program provides students, ages 10-16, the opportunity to explore law enforcement services on an in-depth basis with hands-on exercises. It also provides education and safety training, and exposes students to a variety of career paths. “At the beginning of the program, only one-quarter of the students were interested in becoming a police officer, but by the end more than half wanted to pursue a career in law enforcement, especially after seeing all the different aspects and divisions of police work,” states Deputy Kari Pallotto, BSO Crime Prevention Specialist, who coordinates the Police Services Academy. Throughout the eight-week program, students explored a different area or department each week. For instance, the crime scene investigation (CSI) unit explained how they process different crime scenes and then engaged the “rookies” in a hands-on activity lifting finger prints off an object. The traffic homicide unit spoke to students about the dangers of texting while driving and driving under the influence. Students had the opportunity to put on “DUI goggles” to simulate being drunk and take part in a field sobriety test. Other

classes included earning CPR certification and learning self-defense techniques. The Police Services Academy is unique to Weston. It is funded through a BSO grant, with support from the City of Weston.

eston’s Elliot Borkson will be among the honorees at Signature Grand’s 2011 Profiles in Leadership Gala presented by Holy Cross Hospital. He is one of six distinguished “Leaders of the Year” being recognized at the event which benefits the Leadership Broward Foundation. Borkson has built an impressive reputation in the South Florida legal community as a prominent tax attorney and CPA. But more impressive is his work benefitting the less fortunate in our area. Borkson was a founding board member of the Broward Partnership for the Homeless (BPHI) in 1998 and remains a dedicated board member today. In 2008, he received BPHI’s most prestigious honor, the James L. Blosser Community Trusteeship Award. “The Leadership Broward Foundation is proud to recognize Mr. Borkson for his great efforts in this community, particularly on behalf of the homeless,” said Terri Wallace Flannery, Leadership Broward CEO. “In fact, it was his fellow BPHI board members and supporters who collectively nominated him and it is our privilege to honor him.” In addition to his work with the Broward Partnership for the Homeless, which has served more than 12,000 people at its Homeless Assistance Center to date, Borkson has also

held leadership positions with many other communitybased and national organizations, especially those which benefit children’s and Jewish causes. He has served on the board of directors for Kids In Distress, the Children’s Services Council, the Anti-Defamation League, the Jewish National Fund, and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. Borkson also served on the Broward County Charter Review Commission. “The Profiles in Leadership gala is Leadership Broward Foundation’s annual opportunity to shine the spotlight on individuals, such as Elliot Borkson, who have set a high standard of philanthropy and leadership for our community,” states Wallace Flannery. Borkson and the other honorees will be recognized at the Profiles in Leadership Gala presented by Holy Cross Hospital and taking place at Signature Grand on Saturday, October 15th. he kids are back in school and now it’s time to start thinking about after-school activities. The Sheinberg Family YMCA of Weston offers a host of programs and sports leagues for children of all ages and abilities. The beauty of the Y-sports program is that everyone plays. “The benefits of YMCA sports extend past the playing field. We obviously want all the kids to be successful during the season, but we also want to provide them with skills they will use for a lifetime, such as teamwork and good sportsmanship,” explains Dan Caliento, senior program director at the Sheinberg Family YMCA. “In youth sports, and particularly with the Y-sports, there is more than just the win-loss record at the end of the season to measure success.” Three sports leagues begin this month at the Y: baseball, t-ball and softball; girls volleyball; and roller hockey. The baseball, t-ball and softball leagues are for boys and girls ages four to 14. Teams are now forming and the games begin on Saturday, September 17th. The season runs through November 12th. her recovery to her training. “When I first got home, I was so depressed I could barely get out of bed,” shares Sara. “My dad said to consider this time off from school as boot camp, and get myself into shape both physically and mentally. Now, I’m in the best shape of my life.” Sara works out three to five hours a day. Her trainer and mentor is David Bush, program director of the Ultimate Sports Institute (USI), an affiliate of the Sheinberg Family YMCA. “David always believed in me. He made me realize that I could do anything an able-bodied athlete can do,” says Sara. “I do not think of myself as disabled. I can still do everything; I’m just missing one leg.” In fact, she often works out without her prosthetic. “I always told Sara, she’s never restricted, just slightly modified,” states David, who has donated his time to train Sara. “It’s not that she can’t do something. We just need to figure out how to modify the exercise so Sara can do it.” There is nothing this determined young woman can’t do. “Yoga was the hardest at the beginning. It seemed impossible at first,” confesses Sara. “Lying on the mat, I worried about the simplest things such as how I would get up or would I be stranded there on the floor. My yoga instructor, Lillian Koziol, showed me how to use the chair, floor or wall to get up. I’ve progressed from there.” Sara Phillips works out with trainer David Bush at the Ultimate She certainly has. She takes spinning classes and has even ridden a real bike for ten miles. “I have two new sports prosthetics being made. One for running and one for biking,” says Sara. “My ultimate goal is to one day take part in a triathlon.” Sara has already walked in three 5K events with her prosthesis, and placed second and fourth in two races using a hand cycle sponsored by Achilles. Her greatest accomplishment to date was being named Female Athlete of the Year by the Getting2Tri Foundation, a paratriathlon training camp for adults with disabilities. “I was in shock when they announced my name,” says Sara. “I did not think I would win. Other athletes were so impressive, doing triathlons and climbing mountains. I told myself I would be happy just being nominated, so I was psyched to actually win.” Mike Lenhart, founder of the G2T Foundation, says Sara was a natural winner. “She was our pick for Female Athlete of the Year because of the remarkable progress she made both physically and mentally from the previous year to this year. She is an inspiration to other athletes.” Sara is an inspiration to everyone she meets. wo years ago, doctors told Sara Phillips she would never walk again. She definitely proved them wrong. Today, not only is she walking, but Sara is also biking, swimming, weight training, and even doing yoga and Pilates. Two years ago, Sara was in the prime of her life. She was a second year law student at Michigan State University when she experienced a bad flare up of ulcerative colitis. She went to the doctor, but instead of getting better, Sara was getting worse. Her mother flew up to take care of her and ended up saving her life. “As soon as she got there and took one look at me, she took me right to the ER,” says Sara. “I went for my colon. I didn’t think there was anything wrong with my leg. I had what looked like a mosquito bite, but the next think I knew I was being rushed into emergency surgery in the middle of the night.” It turns out that because of a problem with the medication, Sara had developed necrotizing fasciitis (the flesheating virus) and it had become septic in her bloodstream. Doctors had to amputate her right leg an inch below her hip to save her life. She was not expected to survive. Sara’s family temporarily left their jobs and moved to Michigan to take care of her. After spending six months in the hospital and undergoing five surgeries, Sara was finally well enough to go home. She returned to Weston

can do kid Weston Teen Is Making Strides to Cure Cancer By Stacey Bomser

e may be one step closer to finding a cure for breast cancer thanks to the efforts of one Weston teen. Alexa Ramer, a junior at Cypress Bay High School, was the third highest fundraiser at last year’s American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Broward. She is hoping to raise even more money at this year’s event which takes place on October 9th. Alexa became involved with this cause after her mother, Stacey, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009. “After surgeries and chemo, I’m doing fine today, but it sparked a drive in my daughter that has only become stronger over the years,” states Stacey. Just weeks after her mother’s mastectomy, Alexa formed a Making Strides team in her mother’s honor. That first year, Steppin’ For Stacey raised over $2500. Last year, Alexa stepped it up, organizing a fundraising event in addition to her role as team captain. She got 15 vendors to donate items to be raffled off at the event. Steppin’ For Stacey raised over $5700 for Making Strides, making it the third highest fundraiser in Broward County in 2010. Alexa was recognized at an awards ceremony for being the youngest fundraiser at that level in the ten year history of Making Strides in Broward County. “That was a huge honor for me. I did not realize that I made such a big impact until I was recognized for my efforts. It definitely motivated me to go above and beyond for 2011.” This year Alexa’s goal is to raise $7500. She is well on her way with support from local businesses including Mitch’s Westside Bagels Too, Acquolina Ristorante Italiano, It’s A Wrap, and Broward Dental Rejuvenation Center. In addition, Alexa is selling Steppin’ For Stacey t-shirts for $10 and rubber bracelets for $5, with all proceeds going to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.

Stacey and Alexa Ramer.

“Honestly, when I first started our team, all I wanted to do was to raise money for the cause,” shares Alexa. “But over time, I became more passionate toward the cause and wanted to make a bigger difference for all women going through this disease.” Alexa believes it is important to support Making Strides and other breast cancer awareness organizations. “There has been so much progress made already toward finding a cure for this awful disease and we need to keep going until a cure has been found. Not only do these organizations help to raise necessary funds for research, but they also help to motivate all women to be more aware of their own breast health.” In addition to organizing Team Steppin’ For Stacey, Alexa is also co-founder of the Junior Pink Angels. This is an organization that raises funds for breast cancer patients at the Memorial Breast Cancer Center, where Stacey was treated. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk unites communities to celebrate people who have battled breast cancer, educate people about ways to reduce their risk, and empower communities to join the fight. Every dollar raised and every step taken will save lives by helping people stay well and get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back against breast cancer. Since 1993, nearly 7 million walkers have raised more than $400 million to help fight breast cancer through participating in the noncompetitive, three to five mile events. Last year alone, nearly 800,000 walkers across the country collected more than $60 million to save lives from breast cancer. To learn more visit

veryone knows that you burn calories when you work out. But, wouldn’t it be nice to continue burning calories long after you’re done? That’s the premise behind Orangetheory Fitness. This new fitness studio in the Country Isles Plaza is providing Weston residents with the “ultimate workout.” In fact, it’s based on the program of that name developed by exercise physiologist and fitness guru Ellen Latham, who created the workout at her Davie studio. Now she’s sharing her results-oriented routine with the world, with Orangetheory Fitness franchises opening nationwide. John O’Brien, owner of the Weston Orangetheory Fitness, says he jumped at the chance to get in on the ground floor of this venture. “Ellen is an incredible individual. She’s so full of energy. We were taken in by her and the whole concept.” He’s seen first-hand what Orangetheory Fitness can do. O’Brien is not only the owner, but also a client. “This is the best work out you will ever do,” he states. “One of our trainers said he thought he was in perfect shape until he took this class. Even he saw he had work to do.” The reason the Orangetheory Fitness program gets results is that it is based on science, not fitness fads. Clients

continue to burn calories after each workout due to Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC). The key is to get the heart rate up to at least 85% of the maximum and maintain that for 20 minutes. This triggers EPOC which speeds up the metabolism. “You can continue to burn calories for 24 to 36 hours,” notes O’Brien. Orangetheory Fitness is not your typical gym and the workout is anything but ordinary. During the course of a class, clients perform focused ten to 20 minute intervals that work the entire body and stimulate metabolism using treadmills, rowing Orangetheory Fitness owners John and Andrea O'Brien with the Orangetheory Fitness coaches. machines, TRX training and free weights. This proven workout helps build strength, increase energy, surpass workout plateaus, and tone and shape your body like nothing else. The beauty is that after your workout you feel refreshed and energized. In fact, that’s how the company got its name. According to color theory, each color stimulates a different psychological response, and orange elicits energy. With brightly colored walls, the studio was designed to inspire strength and make you feel energized and focused. legally speaking Cervical Injuries From Car Accidents – Are They Preventable?

Accidents happen.

By Howard Citron

September 2011 | To Advertise in Our City Weston, Please call 954-306-1007 |

hiplash is a common and painful injury caused by motor vehicle accidents. While almost everyone has heard the name, most people don’t have a clear idea of what whiplash is, how serious it can be or how to prevent it.

They can even happen to you.

How Do Car Accidents Cause Whiplash?

Whiplash is a tearing of the muscles, tendons and ligaments in the neck that occurs when the body is exposed to a sudden jolt, such as in a car accident, a fall, or a blow to the head while playing sports. The injury is most common in rear-end collisions, but can occur from a collision from any direction. Additionally, it doesn’t have to be a high-speed crash. In a collision, the car is abruptly accelerated forward (or in another direction). Everything in the car, including your body, resists this sudden forward motion, which is why you feel pushed back in your seat. Braced against the seat, your torso is carried forward with the car. If your head is not braced, it can be jerked back for a second or so. The jolt of the crash can whip your head up and back, tearing muscles and other structures in your neck. Your neck’s reflex reaction is to pull your head forward, but that can be overdone in a car accident, making the injury worse.

What Are the Symptoms of Whiplash?

Often, the symptoms of whiplash are not immediately apparent after a car accident. They typically take 12 to 24 hours to develop and the symptoms may get worse every day until properly treated. Whiplash commonly takes several months to as long as two (2) years after the accident to heal. Common symptoms of whiplash occur in the neck, shoulders, back, and arms, and can include: ▸▸ Pain, stiffness, numbness, tingling and/or swelling ▸▸ Muscle spasms ▸▸ Weakness or temporary loss of movement in the neck ▸▸ Headaches, dizziness, ringing in the ears ▸▸ Blurred vision or other vision changes ▸▸ Cognitive issues such as problems concentrating, memory loss and irritability ▸▸ Depression and sleep interruption ▸▸ Difficulty performing daily activities at home or work

We Handle All Types Of Accident/Injury Cases • Automobile Accidents • Slip & Falls • Dog Bites • Medical Malpractice • Nursing Home Abuse Call today to get the care and attention you deserve. Se habla Español. Call 24/7

How Can I Reduce the Risk of a Whiplash Injury?

Your first line of defense against whiplash is to wear a seatbelt at all times while in an automobile and to properly position your headrest. The top of the headrest should be just below the top of your head. Everyone in the car should routinely adjust the headrest just as they routinely fasten their safety belts. Keep in mind, however, that whiplash can be caused by a collision from any direction. If your head snaps to the side, for example, the headrest will not be in a position to protect you. After any car accident, be aware of your symptoms. If you are experiencing any neck pain, be sure to be evaluated by a doctor.

Keeping Weston Playgrounds Safe By Don Decker, Director of Parks & Recreation

t is estimated that there are over 200,000 injuries on playgrounds each year that will require a trip to the emergency room. Falls are the most common form of injury, followed by equipment related hazards such as breakage. The City of Weston goes to great lengths to limit both the frequency and severity of playground injuries. In 2007, the City began installing poured in place rubberized surfacing on its playgrounds. This surface provides the best possible accessibility to the equipment for persons with disabilities, while reducing the likelihood of life-threatening head injuries due to the shock absorbing characteristics of the rubber. The surfacing must meet very strict guidelines set forth by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. (It should be noted that the surfacing is not expected to prevent all injuries such as broken limbs. There is no surface on the market that can do that.) Continued inspection and maintenance of the surfacing (and the playground equipment) is essential to keeping a playground area safe. Because Weston’s initial rubber play surfaces were installed between three and four years ago, the parks and recreation department chose to have the playgrounds retested to make sure they are still in compliance with the CPSC standards. An independent testing agency performed surface tests using a “Triaxial Accelerometer.” This device measures the impact attenuation (or absorbency) of the surface. All four playgrounds tested this year were affirmed to be in compliance with the national standards. Additional playgrounds will be tested in the coming year and then at regular intervals. In addition to this rigorous test, the parks and recreation department performs inspections and routine maintenance on The City of Weston hired inspectors to ensure the rubberized playground surfaces still meet CPSC standards. a weekly and monthly basis. Playground equipment is observed for damage, graffiti, and cleanliness. Our staff includes individuals certified as Playground Safety Inspectors with the necessary knowledge of the most up to date safety standards. Perhaps one of the greatest unforeseen injuries can occur as a result of sun exposure. Weston playgrounds are covered with a protective shade that will minimize the risk due to exposure. (The playground at Peace Mound Park does not have a shade cover but is surrounded by a number of trees that provide shade.) Even with the shade covers, parents are reminded that the best form of protection is a good sunscreen that provides broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection and has an SPF of at least 15 to 30. It should also be water-resistant as sweating can limit its effectiveness. Keeping Weston children safe on the City playgrounds is a priority. The most crucial element to a safe playground is something that the City cannot buy, and that is good parental supervision. With safe equipment, proper use of the equipment (read the rules signs for helpful information) and attentive parents the playground experience, an essential element of childhood development, should be enjoyable for all.

leveland Clinic Florida has received approval to establish a General Surgery Residency Program, adding to eight other graduate medical education programs already offered at the teaching hospital. It just received approval from the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Evaluation to establish the first and only General Surgery Residency Program in Broward County. The program has been approved for a total of 21 residents over a five year period. Currently, Cleveland Clinic Florida has a total of 85 residents and fellows who participate in Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs annually. “Cleveland Clinic’s unique model of medicine, which integrates clinical and hospital care with research and education, is the perfect training ground for physicians pursuing their specialty. They learn from some of the our nation’s top doctors and surgeons,” states Cleveland Clinic Florida Chief Executive Officer Bernie Fernandez, MD. Not only is the addition of the General Surgery Residency Program good news for the hospital, but for the Weston community as well. “As a teaching hospital with the largest GME program in Broward and Palm Beach counties, we are acutely aware of the role Cleveland Clinic Florida plays in influencing the next generation of physicians and the quality of health care available in South Florida,” says Eric G. Weiss, MD, Chairman of Graduate Medical Evaluation at Cleveland Clinic Florida. “We are proud that many of our residents and fellows choose to remain in the area, and some even continue with Cleveland Clinic as either staff physicians or for additional advanced training.” The General Surgery Residency Program joins Cleveland Clinic Florida’s core residency program in internal medicine. In the last three years, the medical board passing rate for internal medicine residents has been 97 percent.

The epilepsy monitoring unit now houses four beds, with two additional mobile units to improve access for patients. Physicians can now monitor patients with epilepsy symptoms 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in order to diagnose their condition. According to the Epilepsy Foundation, almost three million Americans suffer from some form of epilepsy. Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by recurrent, unprovoked seizures. Cleveland Clinic Recognized for Excellence By Stacey Bomser

leveland Clinic Florida continues to earn accolades for providing superior medical care. A few months ago, it was named one of the region’s Best Hospitals by US News & World Report. Now its gastroenterology department has been ranked among the top 20 in the country and its Pelvic Floor Center has been designated a Center of Excellence. Cleveland Clinic Florida has once again been recognized as one of the best hospitals for gastroenterology according to U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals rankings. It was ranked 19th. This was the second year in a row Cleveland Clinic Florida was among the top 20 hospitals in this specialty. “This recognition is testimony of the dedication and collaboration among our medical staff in our Digestive Disease Center, which includes gastroenterology, colorectal surgery and bariatric surgery,” states Bernie Fernandez, MD, Chief Executive Officer of Cleveland Clinic Florida. “It reflects our commitment to providing patients with the highest quality care as demonstrated by the positive outcomes we deliver.” In U.S. News & World Report’s regional rankings, Cleveland Clinic Florida also achieved high performing designations in nine other specialties: cancer, diabetes and endocrinology, geriatrics, gynecology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopaedics, pulmonology, and urology.

Several of these departments work together in Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Pelvic Floor Center. It was just designated a Center of Excellence: Continence Care in Women by the National Association for Continence, which found that as many as one in four women over the age of 18 experiences urinary incontinence. Cleveland Clinic Florida is the first medical center on the east coast and the third in the nation to receive this distinguished designation. Its nationally ranked Pelvic Floor Center embodies the model of coordinated and specialized care by integrating the departments of urology, gynecology and colorectal surgery into the treatment of pelvic floor dysfunction. “Cleveland Clinic Florida’s unique model of medicine allows doctors across specialties to work together resulting in high quality, patient-centered care,” said G. Willy Davila, MD, Chairman of the Department of Gynecology at Cleveland Clinic Florida. The Pelvic Floor Center is at the forefront of technological advances in the field, enabling physicians to provide minimally invasive, yet safe and effective treatments for common pelvic floor problems that previously required more invasive procedures. As a Center for Excellence, Cleveland Clinic Florida offers solutions to patients who have bladder control and bowel control problems and related pelvic floor dysfunction.

he first day of school was filled with emotion for students at The Sagemont School’s Lower School Campus. The excitement of starting a new school year was enhanced by the pride in knowing that the students helped make the first day of school special for kids miles away. Shortly before the school year ended last June, members of the school’s National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS) along with the Student Council joined forces to organize a school-wide community service project – providing school supplies and backpacks to children living in the tornado-ravaged areas of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Sebastian Zozaya, 2010-2011 NEHS President, thought it was a great idea to collect all the supplies before the school year ended, so they would be ready to distribute on the first day of school. “I was motivated to get involved and start a community service project by an aspect of the NEHS pledge I took that says ‘Be of Service to my school and community, showing that I care.’ We all care for what has happened to these kids our age,” he so eloquently stated. Doris Quintero, Sagemont’s National Elementary Honor Society advisor, says the entire project was student driven. “Our students were very enthusiastic about this project because they knew it was helping elementary students their age and they all know the joy of starting a school year with brand new school supplies.” The entire school embraced the project collecting over 100 backpacks filled with school supplies such as crayons, markers, pencils, pens, binders, folders, loose leaf paper, scissors, glue and much more. The school Karina McCarthy helps organize all of the supplies. collected so many school supply items that after all the backpacks were filled, the extra me in minutes,” shares Breanna Blake, 2010-2011 NEHS Vice President. “I’ve learned items were boxed up to deliver to the schools destroyed by the Tuscaloosa tornado. to appreciate what I have, but most importantly, find ways to help those who do not!” Former Weston resident Allison Stoutland helped distribute the donated school supOlivia Byrne, NEHS member, found the experience uplifting. “The supplies and plies. Understanding Options To Solve Financial Debt ProblemsWhat Credit Card Companies Can Do…And When! By Attorney Caroly Pedersen, Bankruptcy Law Center n these challenging economic times, families are increasingly finding themselves strangled by high rate credit debt, medical bills, threats of foreclosure and judgments. It can all seem very overwhelming, often causing anxiety and fear. The good news is that the first step to solving debt problems is the easiest one - simply learning what creditors can actually do …and when they can do it.

The most rewarding part of my legal consultation with clients is explaining these very basic concepts about creditors and then to see their eyes brighten and a great burden seemingly lift from their shoulders. Yes… knowledge is power and power brings peace of mind. Basically, credit card companies cannot take wages or property from consumers unless they have a court order. Typically, these companies mount a telephone & letter campaign to intimidate and pressure consumers for payment, which lasts 1 year or more before even filing a lawsuit, if ever. If a lawsuit is eventually filed, it can take 6 months or more for a court order (judgment) to be issued, before wages can be garnished or property can be seized. In many cases, consumers are exempt from garnishment and have nothing which can be legally seized anyway – this is called being “judgment proof”. So, for those who are worried about overdue credit card bills, waiting for the creditor to knock on the door any minute, relax…Sleep peacefully tonight!

ongratulations to Isabela Dos Santos, a 2011 graduate of Cypress Bay High School. Not only was she accepted as one of only ten students in the world to the prestigious Experimental Animation Program at the California Institute of the Arts, but Isabela was also one of only 20 students in the country to be named a 2011 U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts. Isabela was recognized for her work in the Cinematic Arts category. She submitted a reel of her stop motion animation for consideration. This is one of her greatest passions. She hopes to one day work in the movie industry. As a Presidential Scholar in the Arts, Isabela was recognized at a White House ceremony and her work was included in an exhibit at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Isabela also contributed to the multimedia performance at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts as part of the Presidential Scholars in Arts. Her animated film “Evolution” was created backwards. Isabela says this was an exercise on studying motion because she figured that if she could make a smooth animation backwards, then she could “probably do an awesome job animating anything else the normal way.” As a medium, she used “clay” made of kneadable erasers, one yellow and the other gray. The Presidential Scholar in the Arts is awarded not only based on a student’s artistic achievements, but also on academics, character and community service. Cypress Bay High School is extremely proud of its distinguished alumna. Isabela is the first student in Weston to achieve this honor. car care Original Equipment vs. Aftermarket Auto Parts By Charles J. Bonfiglio

hen taking your vehicle for service, do you ever think about what kind of parts are being installed? If you take it to the car dealership for service, you can expect Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts. If you take it to an aftermarket repair shop you’ll most likely expect Aftermarket auto parts; although quality aftermarket service centers will offer consumers the option of using either OEM parts or Aftermarket auto parts, which is an advantage for consumers because car dealerships only offer OEM parts. To help you evaluate when to use OEM parts and when to use Aftermarket parts, I’ve created a list of Pros and Cons: Aftermarket Auto Parts are made or sourced by companies other than the car manufacturer that makes the vehicle. PROS: ▸▸ Low Price: Most Aftermarket parts are priced lower than OEM parts with many choices to get the best price. ▸▸ OEM Quality: All Direct-Fit Replacement Parts meet or exceed OEM part specifications and using Aftermarket parts does not void the vehicle manufacturer’s warranty. ▸▸ More Choice: There are many Aftermarket part companies offering a wide variety of choices from valued parts to improved performance parts that outperform OEM parts. ▸▸ Performance Parts: Aftermarket performance parts are made with higher quality materials, upgraded design, improved performance, more durable and come with extended warranty terms. ▸▸ Better Availability: Aftermarket parts offer more availability with many parts stores and service centers that carry them in-stock for all makes and models. Car dealers usually only have one kind of part for one brand car. CONS: ▸▸ Quality Choices: There are many Aftermarket parts brands with varying options of quality and prices, making it difficult to choose from inferior lower-quality materials and improved performance parts. OEM Parts are made by the vehicle manufacturer and match the original parts that came with your vehicle. PROS: ▸▸ Easy Choice: OEM parts offer only one choice of part that fits your vehicle. ▸▸ Fewer Concerns: OEM parts will work and perform exactly as the original part that came in the vehicle. ▸▸ Consistent Warranty: OEM parts offer a standard OEM parts one-year warranty. CONS: ▸▸ More Expensive: OEM parts usually cost more than Aftermarket parts. ▸▸ Limited Parts Access: OEM parts can usually only be purchased at the car dealership, limiting where you can buy them, and in many cases need to be special ordered. ▸▸ Standard Quality: OEM parts are perceived as the best part for your vehicle, but in many cases Aftermarket parts are superior to OEM parts. Which Is the Best Way To Go? My experience has proven OEM parts are the best choice to use for some applications. However, some Aftermarket parts can improve and/or add performance and durability over the OEM parts. This is why our service centers offer both OEM and Aftermarket parts options providing consumers with the best product for their application and budget.

health & wellness Does Corneal Reshaping Work? By Dr. Jane Therrien

n the early days of contact lenses, doctors noticed that their patients wearing hard contact lenses would report seeing better at a distance after removing the lenses than they did before they had put them in. Doctors also noticed that the prescription of some patients in these hard lenses was changing slower than people who wore glasses. They discovered the reason for this was that the lenses which had these effects fit flatter on the curvature of the eye than a regular contact lens, creating a gentle “pushing” effect which temporarily reduced the amount of nearsightedness for the wearers. Doctors went on prescribing these “flatter” lenses for many years until a company produced a special design and healthier contact lens material for approval by the FDA. The FDA approved OrthoK in 2002 for patients of all ages. The procedure involves the patient putting an OrthoK lens in their eye before bed. When the eyes are closed they don’t feel the lenses and upon awakening when they removed the lens they could see clearly all day until bedtime, when they needed to re-insert the lens.

Surgical Treatment Options for Uterine Fibroids

Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer, and third leading cause of cancer death in both men and women in the U.S. Our department of colorectal surgery offers world renowned care, and has achieved excellent outcomes, utilizing innovative treatment techniques.

For women with the most severe symptoms or very large fibroids, surgical removal of the fibroids may be the best solution. Robot-Assisted Laparoscopic Myomectomy Cleveland Clinic Florida specializes in the latest minimally invasive technique, called robot-assisted laparoscopic myomectomy, a breakthrough approach that allows for the selective removal of fibroids. Using this approach, fibroids are removed through five small keyhole incisions. This treatment offers faster recovery time than an abdominal myomectomy and preserves the uterus allowing for future pregnancies. Symptoms such as pressure and heavy bleeding can be eliminated or reduced after the fibroids are removed.

Speaker: David Maron, MD Colorectal Surgeon

Tuesday, September 27

Laparoscopic Myomectomy Fibroids can also be removed with an advanced laparoscopy. This is performed with four small incisions and without the use of robotic equipment. Typically patients go home the same day with a two-week recovery.

Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) PAD is when the arteries in the legs, or any other part of the body that carries blood outside of the heart, become narrowed or clogged with fatty deposits, or plaque. It is a serious condition that can more than double your risk for heart attack or stroke, but it can often be successfully treated by quitting tobacco, exercising and eating a healthy diet.

Laparoscopic Hysterectomy In cases that call for a hysterectomy, a minimally invasive approach called a laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy is available. In this type of hysterectomy, doctors insert a thin, lighted telescope-like instrument called a laparoscope and other small surgical instruments into the navel and abdomen. Cleveland Clinic Florida surgeons can perform the laparoscopic hysterectomy though only one incision instead of the typical three to four incisions. A laparoscope acts like a video camera, guiding the surgeon as they carefully remove the uterus (womb) through the opening. In a laparoscopic hysterectomy, the cervix, the bottom part of the uterus, may be left intact.

her spouse due to an illness. It was certainly a painful and sad time for her and those around her. As we spoke, I was sharing with her how many of her lovely items were sold to people who purchased them for a loved one as a wedding gift, birthday present, or may have been just the special item that they had been looking for to give to someone they cared deeply about. The fact that these items were now helping bring joy to the lives of others was comforting to her in a certain way. On a lighter note, we also discussed how it was helping keep the landfill a bit less full, and helped to recycle back into the community. She also donated many of her items to charities, Goodwill, or just another person in need. While it is a bonus that when clearing out you earn some extra or needed cash, it can also be cleansing, comforting, and for some even liberating.

s we journey through our lives, we collect many things along the way; friendships, family, memories, experiences, and possessions. These things affect our lives in positive and negative ways. Our families and friendships provide joy, laughter, strength, and sometimes pain and difficulty. Often if we learn to let go of the congestion and negative stuff in our lives, we can be happier and more peaceful. If we can free ourselves from excess burdens, stress, and clutter, sometimes we find we are more relaxed, and can enjoy the journey. In the ten years since I have been in selling on eBay, I have encountered many wonderful clients with some quite unusual items to sell, and some very ordinary. Regardless of what items a person has to sell, the most difficult part often seems to be the letting go of the possessions because of the emotional attachment or meaning they represent. Often, I am called to help a client after a parent or spouse passes on, or a divorce has occurred. Recently, I met a particularly lovely woman who had just experienced the loss of

Letting Go With Love By Alina Gastesi-de Armas, MA, MEd, LMHC

hen you are continuously making yourself crazy expecting something from someone who has nothing to give or feeling frustrated because you are trying to make a person someone he or she is not, then it is time to look at your definition of love. Love is not supposed to be painful. Yes, there is pain involved in any relationship but if it is painful most of the time then something is not working. You may be pretending that a person is someone he or she is not. Or, you may be spending precious time trying to get someone to love you in a certain way, when that person cannot or will not. It is time to let it go. It is time to let go of your insistence that they become the person you want them to be, as well as let go of demanding that they give you something they are neither willing nor capable of giving. This does not necessarily mean that you have to immediately stop loving that person. It means that you love them for who they are. You release that person to be who he or she actually is. You stop trying to make that person be someone he or she is not. You deal with your feelings and walk away from the destructive cycle of broken promises, high demands, and endless frustrations. You learn to detach with love.

Conflict Resolution

Being detached and letting go with love does not mean that you cannot enjoy anything or enjoy being with anyone. Rather, it refers to that very strong clinging behavior to anything or anyone that causes you problems; that behavior insists on a reality that does not exist and creates havoc trying to achieve it. Whether it is a destructive friendship, relationship, occupation or familial situation, you need to be able to separate yourself and evaluate the intensity and personal investment of your requests. If you are more invested in the well being or behavior of another than they are then you need to let go. Just as Melody Beattie states in her book The Language of Letting Go: “We learn to let go of people we love, people we like, and those we don’t particularly care for. We separate ourselves, and our process, from others and their process. We relinquish our tight hold and our need to control in our relationships. We take responsibility for ourselves; we allow others to do the same. We detach with the understanding that life is unfolding exactly as it needs to, for others and ourselves. The way life unfolds is good, even when it hurts. And ultimately, we can benefit from even the most difficult situations. We do this with the understanding that a Power greater than ourselves is in charge, and all is well.” Alina Gastesi-de Armas, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Florida Supreme Court Mediator, and Parent Coordinator, is available to answer questions regarding your concerns at A Place for Growth, in Weston at (954) 384-9373 or

Positive Parenting Child’s Play By Jodi Kurry Cohen, MS.Ed Director of Early Childhood Programs Temple Dor Dorim Early Childhood Center

are learned through play are even bigger indicators of success later in life than a child’s academic readiness. Although good grades and academic aptitude can help a child get to where they need to go, creativity, determination, follow through and being able to work with others will take them above and beyond that place. Play comes in many forms and can include play dates, playgrounds, dramatic play and blocks at the preschool age to team sports, neighborhood play and game nights with older children. Play can be structured or unstructured, guided by adults or led by children. For some children play will come naturally but for others it may need to be coaxed and encouraged. Regardless of how it’s done, it’s important for parents to provide environments that allow for play and foster that type of learning so that our children are well prepared for a competitive future.

“Play has been man’s most useful preoccupation.” Frank Caplan rom the moment a child experiences their first game of peek-a-boo with their parents to the time they play competitive sports on the high school football field, that child is learning through play. Play provides for vital opportunities in the development of a variety of skills that are essential in determining a child’s future success. Whether younger or older, children gain similar benefits from play. Through play children learn: ▸▸ How to make choices ▸▸ To use their imagination, improvise, think flexibly and explore new options ▸▸ To solve problems, both with materials and people ▸▸ To work cooperatively ▸▸ To put skills into action ▸▸ To give a project their attention until it’s done In recent years, children’s play has been markedly reduced due to our hurried lifestyles and increased attention to academics and enrichments. Play is so important to optimal child development that it has been recognized by the United Nations’ High Commission for Human Rights as a right of every child. It is imperative that as parents we seek balance in our children’s lives to provide what’s best in optimizing all aspects of their development. Play is essential to development because it contributes to the cognitive, physical, emotional and social well-being of a child. Research has shown that the life skills that

sparing them the pain and distress really in their best interest? Every year one or two parents withdraw their child from preschool because the child cried when their parents left them at school. By not allowing a child to grow through the process of learning to trust others to meet their needs, you may be robbing them of acquiring skills they will need to gain for success in the future. There is such a thing as “over-protecting.” All children need to be protected from physical and mental harm. However, they do not need to be protected from learning how to deal with developmentally appropriate separations and restrictions. When they are given the opportunity to navigate the social terrain, they begin to acquire skills and confidence that they can bring with them to the next task or trial that presents itself. It is important that parents do not rush in to rescue a child before they have had ample opportunity to figure it out on their own. Socially adept children learn from parents who have confidence in their child’s ability to sooth themselves in a difficult situation and make appropriate choices when allowed to; or at the very least, learn and grow from their mistakes.

new school year has begun and that brings mixed emotions for both preschool children and parents. From moment to moment, the classrooms are filled with sounds of happy giggles and sobbing tears. It is always difficult to watch children who are exhibiting signs of distress. As parents and educators we would like to have our child’s first experience at school be pleasant, and for the majority of children it is. But for some, it is a difficult transition. Children of various stages and ages will exhibit distress when left on their own in an unfamiliar environment. It is a normal reaction. How families deal with their child’s “normal” reaction can influence how their child will deal with new situations now, and in the future; as well as how confident they will be when left to their own resources. Some families have spent a significant amount of time helping their child prepare for the transition to school. They have visited the classroom, played on the playground and spoken to the teachers. Though they have planned well, this does not guarantee that their child will not have any difficulty when left in the care of their preschool teacher. All children go through a certain level of anxiety when left on their own, but some children have had opportunities to develop self soothing and coping skills and the transition is shorter and less difficult. Most parents want to spare their children (any and all) pain and distress. But is

reast implants were first introduced in the 1960’s. Since that time, implants, and the surgical procedures to insert them, have evolved in many ways. However, the original goal is still the same -- achieving a natural look.

Size Matters

Se Habla Español

The most common question patients ask is “What would be a good size?” My first response is to remind the patient that implants are not breasts. A simple formula is that the greater the patient’s own breast tissue and the smaller the prosthesis, the more natural the result. Size is, by far, the most important variable in achieving a natural result. Breast size is also influenced by cultural factors. I’ve had the privilege of lecturing in many countries. When I survey plastic surgeons I find that average implant size increases from Asia to Europe to Latin America to the United States. I tell my colleagues that here we suffer from what I call the “Pamela Anderson Syndrome.” Interestingly, surgeons everywhere, even in Vietnam, seem to be familiar with the Baywatch star. Each surgeon develops his or her own technique for choosing the right breast implant size. I like to ask patients what their goals are. Do they want to be understated, proportionate, or XL? It’s not an exact formula but this method has worked well for me over the years.

We service all major household appliances.

Shapes and Styles

Independently owned and operated.

Breast implants come in various shapes and styles. These choices will also impact the aesthetic result of surgery. The first choice is between saline and silicone prostheses. Gel implants feel and look more natural and are lighter than the equivalent saline sizes. Both saline and silicone implants come with either a smooth or textured cover and in round or teardrop shapes. Patients should feel all the implant types at the time of consultation and then decide for themselves.

Surgical Technique: It’s All About the Cleavage!

There are several surgical incisions and approaches to breast augmentation surgery. The technique often will vary based upon the surgeon’s preference and experience. One very important variable however, is the position of the implant pocket. All too often implants are placed too far apart and fail to close the cleavage gap. Even though every woman presents with a different preoperative cleavage gap, the surgeon should focus on helping the patient achieve her personal best. With few exceptions, the gap should be narrower in almost all cases. In my opinion, proper cleavage is second to size in achieving a natural result. So what goes into a “natural” breast implant result? The answer is all of the above: size, shape, style, technique and cleavage. They should all be discussed thoroughly at the time of consultation. Dr. Jorge A. Perez is a member of the NOVO National Council of Leaders in Breast Aesthetics. He has served as a consultant for leading breast implant manufacturers: Mentor (J&J) and Inamed (Allergan). Dr. Perez has lectured internationally on the subject of breast surgery and has been selected among the Castle Connolly (U.S. News & World Report) America’s Top Doctors. health & wellness Dispelling The Myths of Hormones– What Will You Choose? By Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette

he use of hormones has sparked much debate on their efficacy and safety. There are many myths circulating about hormones that have no founded evidence or truth to support these statements. I am starting a series to dispel the common myths surrounding hormone therapy. I will give you true scientific data – so you may have all the options available in order to make an educated choice. Myth #1 – “The term Bio-Identical Hormone has no meaning”. This is incorrect. Bio-Identical is a term which is defined as having the exact chemical structure. Bio-Identical Hormones are hormones that have the same chemical structure as those hormones within our own body. Myth #2 – “There is no proof that Bio-Identical Hormones are safer and more effective than synthetic hormones – all hormones should be classified the same”. This is incorrect and misleading. There is a wealth of information proving that synthetic progestin and estrogen are associated with an increased incidence in both breast cancer and heart disease unlike bio-identical hormones estradiol and progesterone, which are cancer and heart protective. ▸▸ 1996 - Swedish Record Review – four-fold increase in breast cancer with (synthetic) progestin use. ▸▸ 2000 - Breast Cancer Detection Project published – eight-fold increase in breast cancer for synthetic estrogen-progestin users. ▸▸ 2002 - Women’s Health Initiative Study terminated prematurely because of increased breast cancer and heart disease in synthetic estrogenprogestin users. The following is a short list not inclusive of all articles published in medical journals demonstrating the protective benefits of bio-identical hormones: ▸▸ 1998 - Annals of Clinical and Laboratory Science, “Progesterone inhibits growth and induces apotosis in breast cancer cells”– This article documented that the use of progesterone is cancer protective for the breast”. (Bio-Identical Progesterone was shown to stop growth and cause cell death in breast cancer cells). ▸▸ 1985 - American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, “Subfractions of high –density lipoprotein cholesterol during estrogen-replacement therapy: a comparison between progestogens and natural progesterone.” (This study demonstrated the protective benefits of bio-identical hormones on reducing the risk of heart disease). ▸▸ 2000 - Journal of the American College of Cardiology, “Natural progesterone, but not medroxyprogesterone acetate, enhances the beneficial effect of estrogen on exercise-induced myocardial ischemia in post menopausal women.” (This study demonstrated the protective benefits of bio-identical progesterone on reducing the risk of heart disease). ▸▸ 2001 - Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, “Progesterone, but not medroxyprogesterone inhibits vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 expression in human vascular endothelial cells.” (This study demonstrated the protective benefits of bio-identical progesterone on reducing the risk of heart disease). ▸▸ 2005 - International Journal of Cancer – “Breast Cancer Risk in relation to different types of hormone replacement therapy in the E3N-EPIC cohort.” (This study demonstrated the breast protective benefits of bio-identical progesterone). In summary, it is important that if you make the decision to replace your hormones they should be Bio-Identical. Bio-identical hormones mimic what your body already has – molecule per molecule. As you can see through the studies listed above, all hormones and how they react within the body are not the same. The synthetic hormones are associated with an increased risk in both heart disease and breast cancer unlike their bio-identical counterparts. Bio-Identical Hormones are heart and breast protective. home dÊcor The Color of Recovery ing interest in the much livelier tones of coral, turquoise, citrus, and kiwi leading me to believe that the improving real estate market, the more robust stock market, and the bump in consumer confidence are having their effect. Now, these observations are not based on any scientific evidence, but I’d like to think that we are on to something here. The Las Vegas Furniture and Accessory Market supports this theory. In every showroom we saw cheerful, brightly colored accent pieces, and the new fabric lines were more eye-catching than ever. Many of the lighting fixtures and table top accessories were actually whimsical. Very few of the dark heavy Asian rugs were spotlighted, while the lighter newer designs were predominant in every showroom. Almost all of the furniture manufacturers displayed lighter stained woods and less serious styling. With a little luck, our theory is valid and we will see these cheerful colors stay around for a long, long time.

nteriors by Decorating Den has been designing residential interiors for well over 30 years. Throughout this time span we have noticed an interesting phenomenon regarding the color trends that grace our clients’ collective homes. When the economy is in a slump, we have noticed not only a distinctive difference in the tastes of color choices of the homeowners with whom we work, but also a difference in the art, rugs, fabrics, furniture, and lighting that are exhibited twice yearly at the Las Vegas and High Point furniture and accessory markets. It seems that during recessionary periods like we have gone through recently, homeowners tend to choose neutral colors such as beige, espresso, and chocolate with accents of dark blues, greens, and burgundy. Conversely, as the economic picture brightens, those same homeowners look to lighten up the interiors of their homes to more closely match their moods. Lately, more and more clients are express-

Do You Handle Short Sales, Eric?

indows are “energy holes.” So, even though windows make up only about 10% of a home’s insulated shell, as much as 50% of our energy is lost through our windows. Translated into dollars and cents, up to half of what you pay for cooling pours right through them. In Florida, heat is a way of life. Incoming sunlight is harmful to wood causing premature cracking and fading. The UV fades art work, rugs, furniture and upholstery. But there is a beautiful solution from Hunter Douglas. You can have your view and at the same time block the heat and UV with Silhouette and Luminette sheer shadings from Hunter Douglas. ▸▸ Kill the heat but keep the view - Come in to our showroom and see the evidence yourself. We’ll measure the temperature of the heat coming through the window glass with and without a Silhouette and you’ll be amazed at how much cooler it is with the shade in there.

BEFORE: A picture, they say, is worth a thousand words. You be the judge. In the before image the sun fills the room and all the upholstery and rugs look washed. Imagine the heat gain in this opening.

AFTER: Compare to the same room after Silhouette window coverings have been installed. You can now sit comfortably in the same room, without dealing with the heat and yet enjoy your view of the outside.

▸▸ Solar Heat Gain Coefficient - SHGC tells us what fraction of solar energy hitting the window actually enters the home. Lower numbers are better. Standard double-pane windows have a SHGC of 0.76, meaning 76% of the solar energy gets into the home. Add Luminette Privacy sheers and watch that number drop down to as low as 0.20. With energy prices rising, you’ll want to save as much as you can. At Beautiful Windows we have many different options to help you save money. ▸▸ Daylighting - This is the practice of lighting rooms with natural light rather than generating illumination from electricity. The sheers from these products actually diffuse light as it enters and help draw it deeper into the room. Plus, you can direct incoming light where it is needed most by tilting the louvers and slats. Another added advantage is that the sheers on the Silhouette actually keep out 80% of the incoming UV to protect upholstery, flooring and art from fading. When you visit us, ask to see our oversized Silhouette with room darkening features to keep your master room cozy & cool. ▸▸ Motorization - Flipping a wall switch to operate your shades beats having to go window to window to operate each blind individually. Wall switches and remotes can be programmed to handle multiple shades individually or in unison. The “platinum technology” from Hunter Douglas can be integrated into any home automation system. ▸▸ View Through - If view is important, then you want the “4” Silhouette because it offers the most “view through” (space between louvers). It brings the beauty of the outdoors in. The Luminette marries the beauty of sheers with the privacy of soft draperies and allows you to rotate the vanes for infinite degrees of light control. ▸▸ Living smart - Going green is about making small changes that can have a large impact: Energy costs dollars – so the more energy we save, the fewer dollars we spend. Plus, by saving money and energy resources, we leave a healthier world to future generations. Living smart is the best choice for everyone. Visit Beautiful Windows’ 4,000 sq. ft. Draperies and Blinds Showroom. It is a one-stop shopping source for all your window covering needs. With over 19 years of experience, you know you are in good hands. For information, visit

haute hair Help Me, I’m Losing My Hair! By Helen & Jeff Charles

September 2011 | To Advertise in Our City Weston, Please call 954-306-1007 |

ne of the most common requests we hairdressers hear today is help for hair loss. Hair loss affects both men and women of all ages. My husband, Jeff Charles, is a certified trichologist with many years of experience as a hair and scalp specialist. I have asked him to shed some light on hair loss and answer some of the common questions we are asked daily.

Helen: Jeff can you tell me what causes excessive hair loss? Jeff: A variety of things can cause hair loss. Most hair loss is caused by illness or medical issues. For instance, it is common for patients to lose hair after surgery. Paying attention to diet and resuming a healthy lifestyle as soon as possible will eliminate long term hair loss. Hormonal problems or underactive as well as overactive thyroid glands can also cause hair loss. Treatment of hormonal and thyroid imbalances can eliminate excessive fall out. Many women notice hair loss after child birth due to high levels of certain hormones during pregnancy which keep hair from shedding. After birth, when hormone levels return to normal this hair that should have fallen out starts shedding as well as the normal cycle of growth and loss starts occurring. The key to maintaining healthy and shiny hair, in these circumstances, is to have regular trims and use treatment shampoos which strengthen and accelerate the new growth.

Certain types of hair loss are also due to medications including blood thinners, medication for gout, heart problems and high blood pressure, vitamin A if taken excessively, birth control pills and antidepressants. Certain fungal infections can cause hair loss and can be treated with antifungal medicine. Nutritional deficiency, emotional or physical stress, even certain hair styles such as regular tight ponytails or cornrows can add to the long list of causes of hair loss.

Helen: In some cases our clients are unnecessarily

concerned about hair loss. Can you identify what is the normal cycle of hair growth and hair loss? Jeff: The normal cycle of hair growth lasts two to three years and each strand of hair grows approximately one centimeter per month throughout this phase. It is normal to shed 50 to 100 strands a day. While 90% of the hair on each person grows at any one time (anagen phase), 10% of the hair on the scalp is in the resting period (telogen phase). After three to four months, the follicle of the resting hair weakens and falls out and new hair starts growing. Therefore, it is normal to lose some hair each day as part of this cycle and there is absolutely no need for concern unless thinning of the hair occurs. A thorough examination by a qualified trichologist (a specialist of hair and scalp problems) of the scalp and analyzing of some strands of fallen out hair, will determine the cause of hair loss and identify the need, if any, for concern.

I really must emphasize that when it comes to hair fallout, it is important to remember that genes count. We literally inherit our hair from our mother’s father and father’s mother, along with any of their hair problems. Hair will be thicker, thinner, sparse or abundant, straight or curly and so on depending upon your genetics.

Helen: So now, Jeff, the million dollar question -- Is there any treatment for hair loss? Jeff: Depending on the type of hair loss, there are many treatments available. If the cause is due to a side effect of medication, your doctor may be able to prescribe a different medicine. Infectious hair loss can be treated with ultraviolet rays, cortisone ointments and medicated shampoos. Certain medicines such as Rogaine can also 82

help, however, it is important to be consistent and use remedies such as this for at least six months to assess the benefits. When we are dealing with the most common cause of hair loss, the stress factor, the best remedy is regular scalp massage. When you are tense, the muscles in your scalp and neck also tense up, restricting the flow of blood. Amongst my clients I am appalled at the rate I discover scalps that are as tight as drums, squeezing the hair roots to pieces and strangulating the hair bulb. To aid these clients with a high rate of success, I teach a simple daily massage and recommend a nourishing shampoo and a majority of my clients report great results.

Helen: All the valuable advice we volunteer to our clients and in all the years that we have worked so closely with women and men, we have always been impressed by their daring and adventurous spirit in the realm of DIY hairdressing. One of the major hair losses we are experiencing today stems from over-processed hair which is chemically weakened and results in thinning and unsightly hair conditions. My advice to all is “if you botched up your color, please, please do not compensate by trying again.” The overuse of harsh chemicals will over time spell disaster. Men and women do not like to consider the health aspects of hair unless they have a severe problem, such as hair loss, thinning of hair, dandruff, etc. For the most part, people abuse their hair and then expect miracles overnight when they finally do consult a specialist. legally speaking Mortgage Lender Myths They Want You to Believe By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

ost mortgage lenders and servicers are taking advantage of the public’s sense of desperation and lack of information to strong-arm homeowners into signing one-sided loan modification agreements. Prior to signing any loan modification agreement or making any other significant decision affecting your home loan, it is critical that every homeowner be fully aware of the following “myths” that most mortgage lenders want you to believe.

Myth No. 1: If I signed for a bad loan, I have to suffer the consequences of that decision. In reality, federal and state laws impose severe penalties on lenders that engaged in predatory lending practices. These penalties include cancellation of the entire loan and/or a refund of all payments made by the borrower, including any down payment. More importantly, these penalties and remedies related to the original loan transaction may even be available against your current lender. Myth No. 2: Once a foreclosure is filed, the bank can immediately seize your bank accounts, garnish your wages and/or repossess any vehicles you own to satisfy your mortgage debt. Florida law prevents any lender from seizing any assets until after a final judgment of foreclosure, and only after authorization from the Court is obtained to satisfy a “deficiency judgment” (i.e., the difference between the amount owed to the bank and the amount for which the property sold at the foreclosure sale). Myth No. 3: If you are negotiating a loan modification with your lender, they cannot proceed with a foreclosure of your home. This is absolutely false. Actually, lenders can and will use the foreclosure process, especially during a loan modification application, as a means of coercing the homeowner to accept a one-sided loan modification agreement that may even contain a provision where the homeowner gives up all defenses and claims he/she may possess against the lender. Don’t sign any modification or forbearance agreement without first consulting with a qualified attorney in the area of foreclosure defense. Myth No. 4: The lender will act in good faith to offer you the best terms possible during a loan modification. In actuality, the lender’s only concern is their “bottom line.” If the deal does not make sense financially to them, they will force you to accept a one-sided loan modification agreement, or attempt to force you out of your home through a foreclosure process. Most importantly, never assume what you are being told by the mortgage company is the complete truth. We hope you are able to use the information in this article as a tool to assist you in any preliminary discussions with your lender about your home loan. However, this information is not meant to substitute proper legal advice. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you are in the middle of a frustrating loan modification process, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 1-800-770-7102 to schedule a free consultation, or visit www. for more information. Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, or at risk of foreclosure are discussed in a new instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight for Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a complimentary copy during your consultation to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. health & Wellness Upper Back Pain By Dr. Browner & Dr. Behar

ou may have woken up with a “kink” in your neck or upper back, or a shooting pain in your shoulder or arm. Perhaps you have noticed restricted movement in these regions doing the simplest of tasks, such as putting on a coat or backing up the car. Upper back disorders can be manifested in a wide variety of symptoms ranging from a constant dull ache to an excruciating stabbing pain. It may be precipitated by head, arm or torso movement, or by coughing, sneezing or just taking

include organic diseases such as lung, heart and gallbladder, bone diseases and fractures. Your chiropractic doctor’s first task is to perform a thorough consultation and examination so that an accurate diagnosis can be made. The examination usually includes a manual, hands-on assessment of the area of complaint as well as associated areas, a detailed postural evaluation, appropriate orthopedic, neurological and vascular tests, and it will frequently include an x-ray evaluation. Occasionally, laboratory blood work may be ordered. Your chiropractor will discuss the examination findings with you and if the condition is appropriate for chiropractic care, will recommend a specific treatment program. In cases where other forms of health care are required, prompt referral to the appropriate health provider will be made. Your chiropractor will offer two basic types of care: relief care which helps restore the movement of individual spinal segments, thus helping to reduce immediate pain and symptoms; and corrective care. Corrective care involves specific spinal adjustments, rehabilitative exercises and other procedures that reconstruct the spine to as near normal as possible. By restoring near normal spinal alignment and function, not only is pain relieved but optimum healing can occur. So if you or someone you know is suffering from upper back pain, think before reaching for that bottle of pain-killers: what is the more logical solution? Call your chiropractor!

a normal breath. After low back pain, neck pain and headache, upper back discomfort is the most frequent reason people visit a doctor of chiropractic. The upper back refers to the general area between the shoulder blades extending up to the base of the neck. Comprising the upper half of the thoracic spine, it involves ribs that attach to the thoracic spine, and numerous muscles, ligaments, nerves and other soft tissue. Some of the most common causes of upper back pain include: ▸▸ chronic poor posture ▸▸ abnormal thoracic spinal alignment and function (biomechanics) ▸▸ structural and functional problems of the neck (cervical spine) ▸▸ strains and sprains due to trauma or repetitive overuse ▸▸ arthritic conditions A good argument can be made for only two main causes - poor posture and strains/ sprains - since the majority of structural and mechanical problems of the thoracic spine and neck, and the most common form of spinal arthritis, osteoarthritis, can be traced directly back to chronic poor posture. Less common causes of upper back pain can

Fitness forum Kundalini Yoga - A Practice in Awareness of Self By Julie Lazarus

September 2011 | To Advertise in Our City Weston, Please call 954-306-1007 |

rought to North America in the 1960’s, Kundalini Yoga, the mother of all Yoga, has been in practice for 5000 years. It differs from most yoga because its main focus is not posture (asana). Kundalini is a highly spiritual form of yoga with a combination of postures, breath work and meditations. The philosophy of Kundalini is deeply integrated in its teachings; it is unique among all types of yoga because the practice has not been altered in any way from its original form since it arrived here. This is very uncommon. Many people who begin practicing yoga find themselves on a spiritual journey and begin to desire spiritual awakening. They want to raise their consciousness. Kundalini yoga is the fastest, most effective way to do this. It is said that what you can accomplish in 20 years of practice with other forms of yoga can be accomplished in one year of Kundalini yoga.

What exactly makes this type of yoga so effective and unique? What is it about Kundalini that enables its students to delve into their core self and awaken? Each class focuses on a specific topic or life issue. The class consists of a yoga set and/or meditation to support the journey through the issue. Whether students desire balanced emotions and finding a place of neutrality, sharpened intuition, release from fear or simply strengthening the physical body, Kundalini yoga has a set or meditation to assist in the process. It is common to find Kundalini yogis practicing the same yoga set or meditation for 40 days or more in order to master and usher in the change that is desired.  What is the result? Change. Students find an increased quality of life. They find happiness through strengthening the nervous system and balancing the glandular system. Consistent practice also provides a release for the subconscious, which allows for the effective processing of emotions and life situations. Known as the yoga of Awareness, an increased practice of Kundalini awakens students into consciousness. A consistent practice provides a shift in perspective -- life can be seen for what it really is as opposed to what one may think it is, freeing the student to live from a place of neutrality instead of emotion. Julie Lazarus has a bachelor degree in Exercise Science, is certified in Kundalini Yoga, and is a Yogic Numerology Instructor. Julie offers Kundalini classes on Wednesday and Friday from 12:15-1:30pm at Weston Yoga. She frequently holds Primary and Advanced Workshops and is available for Private Numerology Readings. Pet Care Dental Care for Your Pet By Miguel E. Cordova, DVM

September 2011 | To Advertise in Our City Weston, Please call 954-306-1007 |

ere’s a statistic you may find shocking: Veterinary experts estimate that up to 80% of dogs and 70% of cats that do not receive proper dental care will show signs of dental disease by the age of three. Dental care is a very important but often overlooked aspect of your pet’s overall health and well-being. Dental disease can cause serious health problems in dogs and cats -- ranging from tooth loss to systemic illness. That’s why it is important to make sure your pet gets regular dental checkups and that you pay attention to her dental care at home, too.

Why Is Dental Care So Important?

Without proper dental care, many pets will, at the least, suffer from bad breath, inflamed or bleeding gums, missing, loose, or broken teeth, and all the discomfort that such problems can cause. At worst, dental problems can contribute to systemic disease and even organ damage. In addition, many dental problems, such as broken or abscessed teeth, can be extremely painful. Broken teeth are a common problem in dogs that like to chew on hard objects (so make sure your dog has plenty of appropriate chew toys). Dental disease, in particular, is a common cause of weight loss in older cats.

When Should I Worry About My Pet’s Teeth?

Proper dental care should begin when your pet is a puppy or kitten. Your pet should have an annual dental examination and cleaning performed by your veterinarian, who will thoroughly evaluate your pet’s entire mouth as well as her face, head, and lymph nodes. The exam will be followed by a professional cleaning to remove plaque, stains, and tartar both above and below the gumline. Your veterinarian will also remove the bacteria that can cause gum disease and take an x-ray of your pet’s teeth to check for potential problems. In order for your veterinarian to perform a proper dental examination and cleaning and to visualize all of your pet’s teeth (even those in the back of the mouth) your pet will need to be anesthetized. While there is always a slight risk whenever anesthesia is used, today’s anesthetic agents are extremely safe. To enhance safety, your veterinarian will recommend relevant preanesthetic testing for your pet to make sure there are no hidden health problems that could be affected by the anesthesia.

Dental Care at Home

In between your pet’s examinations and professional cleanings, you should follow your veterinarian’s advice regarding home dental care for your pet, including daily teeth brushing and special dental care diets and treats. From the time your pet is young, you should begin getting her gradually accustomed to having her mouth opened, her teeth touched, and her gums massaged. Ask your veterinarian for advice on the best way to brush your pet’s teeth, but generally you can start by touching one tooth a day and gradually increasing the number over a period of days, weeks, or even months. Once your pet becomes used to having something in her mouth, you can start brushing her teeth with a special pet toothbrush. (Be sure to use pet toothpaste only. Human toothpaste can be upsetting to pets’ stomachs.) If your pet seems afraid of the toothbrush, try using a small piece of gauze wrapped around your finger to start.

The Bottom Line

Oral disease is one of the biggest health problems diagnosed in dogs and cats today, so it is essential for owners to provide pets with good dental care, both professionally and at home. The fact is that your furry friend will live longer and be healthier if her teeth are properly cared for at all stages of life.

here’s an old adage that babies don’t come with instruction manuals. Well, the truth is, neither do children. Parents are often left wondering what to do and, unfortunately, busy pediatric practices are not always able to answer all their questions. U & I Pediatric Wellness was created by Dr. Iris Silverberg, a parent and a pediatrician, to fill the gaps while also promoting health and wellness. During her seven years in private practice, Dr. Silverberg noticed that wait times were getting longer, while office visits were getting shorter. “I found there was not enough time to answer all the questions or address all the needs,” she explains. “I recognized there was a need for longer appointments and a more personalized relationship between the physician and the family.” And from that, U & I Pediatric Wellness was born. Dr. Silverberg is quick to point out that U & I does not replace your pediatrician as primary care physician. Your child will still see their pediatrician for well visits and sick care. U & I Pediatric Wellness is an adjunct service. It complements your child’s health care. “My mission is to enrich your child’s wellness by providing enhanced services beyond current pediatrics,” states Dr. Silverberg. “This practice offers a variety of commonly requested services missing from most pediatrics, including one-on-one consultations, fitness, health care advocacy, nutrition, education seminars and wellness programs.” U & I Pediatric Wellness consultations are 45 minutes long, allowing for plenty of dedicated time and attention to your child’s wellness. These appointments can be scheduled to address any issues or medical concerns you may have about your child’s health and his/her development. Commonly requested topics include vaccine education, development - milestones, and advice on discipline, bullying, sibling rivalry, picky eaters, sleep difficulties, bedwetting, potty training and many more subjects. Any issue of concern to you or your child can be discussed during a consultation. Other services provided include multiple specialist coordination and medical record review. “If you have a child who needs to see multiple specialists, your pediatrician is supposed to coordinate that care,” explains Dr. Silverberg. “However, that does not always happen in many pediatric practices due to limited time or your child doesn’t always see the same doctor. I can coordinate all of your child’s physicians and specialists, while taking the needed time to educate the parents.” This working relationship between physician and parent (and patient) is why “U & I” is part of the practice name. The practice’s commitment to fitness and nutrition explains the “Wellness” part of the name. As a pediatrician, Dr. Silverberg is concerned about the growing incidence of childhood obesity. “U & I Pediatric Wellness strongly believes that a comprehensive nutrition and fitness program is essential to counteract the staggering statistics of increasing

Most importantly, all of these exercises are kid-approved to keep kids motivated and having fun,” notes Dr. Silverberg. The onsite gym is also used for Floor Time with Dr. Silverberg. Dr. Iris Silverberg is a board certified pediatrician and mother of two. The long time South Florida resident was accepted into the Medical Scholars Program, an accelerated seven-year medicine program, at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. After excelling at the top of her class, she accepted a pediatric residency position at the Holtz Children’s Hospital at Jackson Memorial Hospital. During her residency, Dr. Silverberg was awarded the Teaching Excellence Award and National Funding under the CHAMP/Dyson Community Pediatrics Training Initiative. After completing her residency and becoming board certified, Dr. Silverberg joined a private pediatric practice with offices in Weston and Plantation. She now serves as medical director of U & I Pediatric Wellness, PA. U & I Pediatric Wellness is conveniently located at 1290 Weston Road, Suite 220, in the Citibank building at Country Isles Plaza. hild support in Florida is based upon a number of factors. They include the number of minor children in the household, the income of the parents, and the amount of time each parent will spend with the minor children. Time is defined as overnight visits. A parent who spends considerable time with his/her child(ren) will not have the time considered if the visits do not result in an overnight stay. To some people that “rule” may seem a bit unfair and in some instances it probably is. That is the state of the law however as of today. The child support guidelines were amended many years ago to include a new formula (commonly referred to as the Gross Up Method), which takes into consideration the amount of time the parent who is paying child support spends with his/her child. Once again, time spent refers only to overnights. It was realized that the more time a parent has with his/her children, the more money he/she will directly spend on them for food, clothing and even utilities like electricity and water. Initially, the amount of

overnights to qualify for this reduction was a minimum of 40% of the overnights or approximately 12 each month. That number was recently reduced to 20% each month or approximately 6 per month. The formula however still gave a greater reduction in support to someone who had the children for 40% of the overnights than for someone who had them for 20% of the overnights. A few days ago I received an E-mail concerning the new guidelines and their calculations. It appears that when the guidelines were modified, a problem arose. The problem is that under certain circumstances, child support which is calculated under the “Gross Up Method”, results in a greater monthly amount than if the normal or “Non Gross Up Method” is used. What that means is that someone who is spending less time with the minor children maybe paying less child support than someone who spends a more substantial time. This was clearly not the intent of the law. This appears to occur when one party has minimal income and the other earns over $4,000 a month and the paying parent has the child(ren) for a minimum of 73 nights and a maximum of 90 overnights (yearly). To test this “glitch,” in the guidelines I prepared my own scenario using those numbers and in fact the outcome was as indicated. The child support was greater using the “Gross Up Method”. There are arguments that can be made to a judge to correct this mistake and make it equitable. If you fall within these guidelines you may want to schedule a consultation.

the client. “I will not try to sell them more than they should be buying. I go with what the client feels most comfortable with,” she said. Silvy says now is a great time to buy a home, thanks in part to historically low interest rates and lower prices. “Right now is the best time ever to buy. The prices are back to the 2002 level according to the Case-Shiller Index. This means five percent annual appreciation since 2002 has not yet been realized. When market conditions improve, we could see this appreciation recaptured,” she said. Customer service is key with Silvy Gamarra. She says even after completing a deal, she stays in contact with many former clients, to make sure they are doing well. For her, putting a family in a new home that is right for them is what drives her. “I love finding a home for someone and seeing the expression on their face when they have finally found their dream place,” she said. Silvy is a Broker Associate with Galleria International Realty, which is located on trendy Las Olas Boulevard in the heart of Fort Lauderdale and specializes in luxury oceanfront, waterfront and prime townhomes and condominiums. They can offer a unique exposure to millions of people who pass by their 55’ Real Estate Gallery of windows showcasing properties on our four large flat screen TV’s. Originally from Montreal, Canada, Silvy spent 15 years working in customer service, sales, government relations and public affairs for major corporations. It was a position that let her travel the world, living in places like Hong Kong and Australia. As result, Silvy and family were continually relocating, bringing her a unique and international appreciation of the real estate market. She became a realtor in 2004, and has since become one of Weston’s leading real estate experts. She speaks fluent English and French and is currently working on perfecting her Spanish. “Weston is a great city, and one of the best places to raise kids in South Florida,” Silvy said. If you own real estate and you are thinking of selling, Silvy would be happy to provide you with a free home evaluation. She’s also ready to answer any general questions about buying, selling or renting real estate in Florida. She invites everyone to browse her website for listings, reports and other important local real estate information. She stands by her word that her clients will come away with a positive experience. “I am a dedicated and trust-worthy person. When someone calls and makes an appointment, I am going to be there, on-time, and will take care of everything. I make the process of selling and buying really easy for my clients,” she said.

hether you are buying, selling or renting in today’s housing economy, it’s best to turn to a realtor who has the experience needed to close the deal, quickly and professionally. Silvy Gamarra has spent years building a reputation as one of the area’s most trusted real estate advisors, and with good reason. “I really care about the client. She says Weston, with its lush, upscale style, great amenities and schools, is still a neighborhood in huge demand and a great investment. “The Weston market is still very, very good. We didn’t see as much of a drop in the pricing as in other areas. It is very stable,” Silvy said. But making such an important transaction requires a real estate advisor with the knowledge of the market in today’s competitive environment. t depends on the facts and circumstances. Taxpayers are allowed to exclude from gross income a discharge in whole or in part of qualified principal residence indebtedness. However, in order to qualify the debt must meet the following criteria: 1. The debt must be on the taxpayer’s principal residence. As per IRS Pub. 4681, it is stressed that a taxpayer can have only one principal residence; and 2. The debt must be acquisition indebtedness. This means that the debt is incurred in the acquisition, construction or substantial improvement of the taxpayer’s principal residence and is secured by the residence. Debt forgiven on a second home, rental property, business property, credit card, or car loan does not qualify for this relief provision. However, in some cases, other kinds of tax relief such as insolvency may be available. In addition, debt reduced through mortgage restructuring, as well as mortgage debt forgiven in connection with a foreclosure, may qualify for this relief. Thus, taxpayers only need to complete Lines 1e, 2, and 10b of Form 982, in most cases. However, the basis of the taxpayer’s principal residence must be reduced, but not below zero, by the amount of any income excluded under the 2007 Mortgage Relief Act (IRC 108(h)(1)). The Ordering Rule applies when only a portion of the loan outstanding meets the qualified acquisition indebtedness standard. Thus, the exclusion from income only applies to the extent that the amount cancelled exceeds the amount of the loan (immediately before the cancellation) that is not qualified principal residence indebtedness (IRC Sec. 108(h)(4)). The effect of this rule is the application of any forgiveness is first applied to non-qualified debt. Accordingly, those taxpayers who refinanced the home for purposes of other than buying, building, and improving the property may still be subject to income on the loss of the home. For example, Mary incurred recourse debt of $800,000 when she purchased her principal residence for $880,000. When the value of the property was $1,000,000, Mary refinanced the property with a new $850,000 loan at the time the original mortgage had a balance of $740,000. Mary used the $110,000 to pay off credit cards. Two years later Mary loses her job. Her property has declined in value between $700,000 and $750,000. The lender agrees to a short sale of the property for $735,000 and to forgive the remaining balance on the note, $115,000. Under the ordering rule, Mary can only exclude $5,000 under the exclusion for canceled qualified principal indebtedness ($115,000 canceled minus $110,000 amount of indebtedness that is not qualified principal indebtedness). Mary must include the remaining $110,000 of canceled debt in income on Line 21 of Form 1040, unless another exception or exclusion applies. The exclusion does not apply to a taxpayer in a Title 11 bankruptcy. However, only your specific facts and circumstances would define whether or not you are a tax target after debt discharge. New floors feature thick planks and lots of texture. This can be seen in laminate flooring as well. “Laminate is still very popular because of its durability and it has a lower price point than hard wood,” explains Ken. “We’re also seeing people installing porcelain tile that looks just like hard wood,” he adds. Porcelain tile can also look just like real stone, but without the maintenance and upkeep of marble. Rotary News “Service Above Self,” Not Just a Motto By Herb Schultz, Rotary Club of Weston member

September 2011 | To Advertise in Our City Weston, Please call 954-306-1007 |

he Rotary Club of Weston is a highly diverse group of 120 professionals dedicated to the Rotary ideal of “Service Above Self.” The Club celebrates its 25th anniversary this year and offers a wide variety of service opportunities for its members. Many local people recognize the Weston Rotary for its signature golf tournament which raises money for scholarships for local students, and the Get Fit Weston program and Run for Tomorrow, which combine to fund afterschool fitness programs and the Club’s charity funds. Rotarians, however, are also involved on a “hands-on” level with many other projects. Club members make regular visits, as a group, to LifeNet 4 Families (formerly the Broward Cooperative Feeding Program). They provide assistance by preparing and serving food, stocking the pantry, preparing weekly food baskets, and other projects at the facility which provides food, clothing and vocational assistance to over 200 needy families weekly.

Rotarians prepare crafts for mothers and children at the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center.

The Club actively and financially supports the humanitarian efforts of Rotary International. RI’s signature project has been the eradication of polio, which is now very close to becoming a reality. The Weston Rotary sponsors an annual free concert, at Weston Regional Park, where this year wristbands were sold to raise money for the polio effort. Major efforts in the past several years have been made to support relief for Haiti as well as clean water management projects in various underdeveloped areas.

Rotarians Pete Messina and Rick Stark work the kitchen at LifeNet 4 Families.

The Club also sponsors ongoing programs at the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center, a facility where young mothers can recover from substance abuse while still living with their children. Programs have included holiday celebrations, storytelling, arts and crafts, and concerts. Many members are involved in supporting those in military service, as well as veterans. The Club arranges regular poker nights at the local VA Hospital and has sponsored a project to refurbish the landscaping at the facility. Recently a large shipment of personal items was collected and shipped to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. A Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) has recently been established under the leadership of Weston Fire Chief Harris Bouchillon (a Rotary member). The team is being trained by local police, fire fighters and EMTs in disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. The response from Club members has been excellent and other members of the community are encouraged to join the CERT team as well. Rotary is very committed to developing the idea of service among our youth. To that end, the Weston Rotary sponsors Interact Clubs at both Western and Cypress Bay high schools and honors one student from each school as its Student of the Month. Young adults are encouraged to serve through the Rotoract Club at Nova Southeastern University, which is also supported by the Weston Rotary. Rotary members provide mentoring and assist these young people in developing their passion for service.

Bill Gates addresses Rotary International. The Gates Foundation matches Rotary funds to eradicate polio.

The Rotary Club of Weston is recognized as one of Southwest Broward’s leading community service organizations. Weston Rotary meets at Weston Hills Country Club every Thursday morning, year-round, from 7:30 – 8:30am to enjoy a buffet breakfast and a lively meeting program. For further information about Weston Rotary, visit our website, or stop by our FaceBook Fan Page (Rotary Club of Weston) for the latest happenings.

legally speaking Deadline Approaching for Widow(er)s to Self-Petition for Green Card By Elizabeth R. Blandon

or many years, foreign nationals were barred from qualifying for a green card following the death of their United States citizen or Legal Permanent Resident spouse. This rule was commonly known as the “two year marriage rule for widow(er)s.” While the rule was in effect, applications were automatically denied if the spouse died before the couple’s two-year wedding anniversary. Applications for stepchildren were also denied based on the spouse’s death. In 2009, the law changed to allow the immediate relatives to remain eligible for the green card following the immediate relative’s death. However, foreign nationals need to file a petition before October 28, 2011, to become a legal permanent resident based on this law. If the foreign national – or a non-lawyer representative – files incorrectly or late, the opportunity for the green card is gone forever. Now, foreign nationals who were married less than two years at the time of their spouse’s death can get a green card based on the marriage. Children of either spouse can qualify as well. In order to qualify under the new law, a widow petition needs to be filed within two years of the death of the qualifying relative (which could be a spouse, parent or step-parent). Persons who never submitted a petition and did not qualify based on the old rule can file a new widow petition before the October 28, 2011, deadline.

Except for the relative’s presence during the application process, the case will be decided based on the same criteria as it would if the immediate relative were still alive. The foreign national needs to show that he/she resided in the United States with their spouse at the time of death, continues to reside in the United States on the date of the decision of the pending petition or application, and meet other requirements for admission. Generally, the basic requirements for admission involve health related grounds, economic or public charge grounds, a criminal law violation or violation of immigration laws. If the foreign national is not admissible, then they can still gain admission by obtaining a waiver. Before filing, foreign nationals should first determine whether they meet all of the other requirements to obtain the green card. An immigration attorney is the most qualified person to review the case to determine if the foreign national is eligible and should file the petition. The attorney can also prepare the foreign national throughout the application process and represent them at the Immigration interview. •

Beat the Heat

Camp TDD found some clever ways to beat the heat this summer. The little ones had a “splashtacular” time playing in the super-sized sprinkler, while older campers enjoyed a tasty treat with a field trip to Jaxson’s Ice Cream Parlor.

Wet & Wild

Campers at Camp Chameleon pretend to “walk the plank” during some pirate-themed pool fun. Another fan favorite was the field trip to see the alligator show at the Seminole Okalee Indian Village.

Game On!

It was all fun and games at Mark at the Park Camp. Campers enjoyed lots of games, activities, and funfilled field trips! Xtreme Dodgeball and Capture the Flag were popular picks with campers this summer.

Chutes & Ladders

Camp Sagemont campers kept busy this summer with fun activities and field trips. These “shady” characters enjoyed the playground, while senior travel campers spent a wet and wild day at Rapids Water Park splishin’ and splashin’ on the water slides.

Galloping Gourmets

Campers at A Children’s Carousel enjoyed a tasty treat after making their own personal pizzas. Another day, campers got a taste of the “wild west” when they were treated to pony rides.

Artistic Expression

Campers at the All Art Camp at the Art Institute of Weston expressed their creative sides this summer. Campers took part in a variety of artistic activities including drawing, painting, ceramics, arts & crafts, music and drama.

Summerfest Celebration Weston Philharmonic Society Board Members Joy Rodenberg (left) and Gina Catone.

Music lovers enjoyed an evening of hors d’oeuvres and beautiful music when the Weston Philharmonic Society (WPS) presented Summerfest 2011. The concert featured members of the Symphony of the Americas joined by the internationally acclaimed Remenyi Ede Chamber Orchestra from Hungary.

Style & Substance

Congratulations to Weston residents Robert and Jane Toney (middle row and back row on right). The Symphony of the Americas recognized the couple at its recent Style & Substance luncheon. The honorees are all prominent individuals who have distinguished themselves through outstanding service and commitment to the community. The event benefits the Symphony of the Americas’ Education and Outreach Programs, which reach over 35,000 people annually.

Supporting the Arts

Cecile Klein, assistance vice president and store manager for TD Bank in Weston, presents a check to Mindy Shrago, executive director of Young At Art Museum, and Marie Segre, ArtREACH coordinator for Young At Art. TD Bank, through its TD Charitable Foundation, made the $12,500 donation to Young At Art to help fund the museum’s ArtREACH program. ArtREACH is an afterschool program for homeless children. It is a collaborative effort between Young At Art and the Broward County School Board. Through the power of art, ArtREACH helps build learning aptitude, literacy skills, selfesteem and self-confidence in homeless children in a safe, nurturing and creative learning environment.

Celebrate Life

Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz has been named the 2011 Cancer Survivor of the Year by Holy Cross Hospital. The announcement was made at the hospital’s annual Celebration of Life luncheon. After announcing two years ago that she had been diagnosed with and treated for breast cancer, Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz became an even stronger advocate for health issues. She introduced the Education and Awareness Requires Learning Young Act, which passed as law as a part of the Affordable Health Care for America Act. It calls for a national campaign about the threat of breast cancer to all young women, but particularly for women of ethnic, cultural, and racial minorities.

Summer Scholars

Ashley DeBiase cheered on the Barcelona team against the Chivas from Mexico in a recent soccer game at Sun Life Stadium attended by a record-breaking 78,000-plus fans. Ashley plays for the Cypress Bay girls’ soccer team and the Weston FC U-15 team. She is also a volunteer for the AYSO youth soccer program.

Cleveland Clinic Florida graduated 29 students from its six-week Summer Scholar Program. The group of high school and college students, with a shared interest in medicine, spent their summer days shadowing physician-mentors, observing surgeries and procedures, and seeing firsthand what it means to care for patients. Program Director Dana Sands, MD, a colorectal surgeon, and Beth Duke, Director of Graduate Medical Education at Cleveland Clinic Florida, coordinated the no-cost program and are pictured to the left and right, respectively, of the 2011 Summer Scholar participants.

Students from Jammin’ Kids International Music Academy were invited to perform at Young at Art Children’s Museum. Pictured here are a few of instructor Danny Gast’s piano and voice students.
