This is unheard of.” A . Most, if not all yoga studios, offer 1 free class. In reality it is very difficult to get a true sense or feeling for what yoga is in one class. We want everyone interested in getting into yoga, from the beginner as well as those already enjoying and practicing yoga to get acquainted with our studio, staff and for beginners to see what yoga is all about. When I got into yoga I took advantage of the free class offers and to be honest I was not sure if yoga was for me. I had a real purpose and goal to practice some ongoing type of exercise having started with Kempo Karate at a very early age and attaining my Jr. Black Belt at the age of 8. I later went on to become a dancer and member of the Somerset Academy dance team and the FIU Dazzlers. Always looking for the best exercise and activities to be healthy. I continued to pursue my goal and am truly glad I did, since there are many types of yoga styles and had I not continued I would have most likely not fallen in love with yoga as I did.

Q. When you say different types of yoga, what do you mean? Isn’t yoga just yoga? A. No, most definitely not. There are many styles of yoga, hot power yoga which can be heated or non-heated, there is Vinyasa which is a flow etc. and not all studios offer different types of yoga. So finding the right style that fits you is very important. If you take a class and that specific type of yoga does not fill your heart and soul, it is difficult and you get discouraged, you might never bring yoga into your life. You would have missed out on one of the best practices and lifestyles that an individual can enjoy. Q. So you offer different types of yoga? A. Yes, we offer different types during different days and hours. We have two large studios which allows us to do so without having the students feeling crowded and uncomfortable. Our classes start at 6:30 am and go on throughout the day unti 7:30 pm. Our institute is designed to accommodate our students’ needs and schedules.

Miramar Residents Celebrate With New, Forever Family Members on National Adoption Day BY JILL SHARPE

her first birthday that couldn’t be bought in any store. She was adopted by her forever parents. Crystal Robinson and Farouk Morales of Miramar, who fostered Allison since she was seven days old. The family celebrated the occasion along with many other children and new parents on November 22nd, National Adoption Day at an event hosted by ChildNet at the Broward County Courthouse. Crystal Robinson said it was a long process but they couldn’t be more excited. “My favorite part of the day was when the judge announced that we are officially a family,” said Robinson. “We won’t need any more court orders if we want to travel with her and we love hearing her call us mommy and daddy.” ChildNet, a non-profit agency that coordinates the child welfare system in Broward and Palm Beach Counti,es has been hosting National Adoption Day events for over 12 years. On November 22nd, 29 new homes were found for 37 children between the ages of one and 17. A similar event in Palm Beach County saw 16 families adopt 24 children. The celebration brought together members of the judiciary, local businesses, human service agencies, and adoptive families. “It’s great to see so many happy families, especially this being their first day as a happy family together,” said Judge John Bowman of

the 17th Circuit Court, who has presided over many adoptions. “There are still a lot of children that are waiting to find a family. Every kid deserves a family, and we’re open for adoptions year-round.” Chick-fil-A donated lunch for the event while Rhythm City DJs kept the crowd dancing. Representatives from agencies like the Department of Children and Families, Broward County, Heart Gallery and Guardian ad Litem enjoyed seeing their hard work pay off with all of the joyous new families. Steve Thacker, Community Development Coordinator for Guardian Ad Litem, explained that the agency works with dependent children from Weston to Liberty City, all just looking for a forever home. “We have three-year-old twins here that were in five different placements in two years and were just adopted today,” he said. “They’re terrific kids and their new forever family is wonderful. They really hit a home run.” Chivonne Henry, who volunteered at the event along with several other Marriage and Family Therapy students from Nova Southeastern University, said the group was happy to come and give back at this worthy event. “We’re here for the kids and for these families,” said Henry. Theara and Victor Edwards of Miramar were beaming with pride as they celebrated the official adoption of two year-old Tijwuan. Tijwuan is their

nephew and the couple has been looking after him since he was ten days old. “I can have him all to myself now, and don’t have to share him with the courts,” said Edwards. “Before Tijwuan, life was meaningless and now life has purpose. I just love him and having this new addition to our family.” Teresa Fiedtkou, a Guardian ad Litem Staff Advocate who worked with the Edwards family, spoke about her experience working with the family. “You can see the bond between Tijwuan and the Edwards. The family really goes above and beyond, and he’s thriving in school. We’re so proud and excited for him.” “We’re here to celebrate families and the children they’re adopting,” said Theresa Kennedy, ChildNet’s Assistant Vice President for Adoption and Youth Services. “My favorite part is seeing how happy everyone is. I recruit these prospective families and to meet them in person, and some of these families brought their relatives along, that makes it all so special.”

Middle Schoolers Get Fit at TAG USA

he newest Middle School “get in shape” program is at TAG USA in Weston. Students can be picked up at their school by the TAG USA Aftercare vans to participate in the “Get Fit Boot Camp & Sports program. Kids will have fun with the crossfit rings, trampolines, weights, and aerobic tumbling drills while they get fit and in shape. TAG USA owner Marissa Zoldan explains that there are many health, social, and educational benefits from participating in a physical activities program at the end of a school day. Describe TAG’s new Get Fit Program: It’s specifically designed for children, ages 10-14, that want daily physical activity without committing to one sport. Some children do not want to join a specific team or go to a gym that has the same activities every day. TAG USA’s Get Fit program uses a variety of exercises and sports to keep the children interested and help them get into shape. TAG’s Get Fit activities change every day which prevents “workout boredom” and makes each day different. The program alternates activities from using trampolines, rings, and bars to tumbling and basic gymnastics. I also includes aerobics and lifting weights to create a fun, unique, and productive training session. Who can join TAG’s Get Fit Program: TAG’s Get Fit program targets Middle School students who need an after school activity. Studies show that physically active students do better in school and in their long term health, compared to sedentary children. In the Get Fit program, a student will learn how to tumble, use free weights to isolate muscle growth, complete aerobic training for weight control, learn basic trampoline skills, and build their core strength while using the rings and bars apparatus Workout methods will also vary by using isometric resistance (where muscles of the body exert a force either against an immovable object) and isotonic (involves controlled contraction and extension of muscles and joints) exercises. Each and every workout day will be different and exciting.

How do you join? Parents can register their middle school children to be by the TAG USA Aftercare Program. The TAG vans will pick up the students at their schools and bring them to TAG’s 40,000 square foot facility by 4:30pm. At the gym, the students will break into their groups and begin one and a half hours of fitness training. After their fitness class, students will then work on their school assignments until they are picked up by their parents before 6:30pm. If school pick-up is not needed, parents may also register their child as a walk-in athlete. TAG started an aftercare program this year. Why is it so popular? Parents love our aftercare program because it includes homework time with a licensed teacher in a designated classroom space. After the school work is done, children take part in planned physical activity. They are not sitting around watching movies and playing video games. Our students take park in recreational sports and gymnastics/tumbling classes. For students in the Weston and Cooper City area we offer after-school pick-up. Students and Community Pitch In To Make Harvest Drive a Success BY JILL SHARPE

hanks to the efforts of 17 local schools and 784 volunteers ,

including businesses, 201 families received a week’s worth of groceries (10-12 grocery bags full) and a Publix Gift Card to buy a turkey and other

perishable items as a result of this year’s Harvest Drive. Glades Middle School in Miramar once again served as the distribution site for the annual food drive, packing and distribution effort November 18-20. According to Jennifer Moser, the Harvest Drive Coordinator at Glades Middle, all told students and volunteers collected 21,469 food items in addition to more than $5,000 in gift cards. Moser said she doesn’t have to do much to motivate the students to help. “Everyone really and truly wants to be involved in this project,” said Moser, who is also the school’s peer counseling teacher. “We’ve created a culture here of giving back to our community and it’s wonderful. This year our community partners included Rolls Royce, Bimbos Bakery, The Miramar Police, and other outside agencies.” Intern Principal Dorys Palacio said the Harvest Drive is by far the school’s most rewarding event of the year. “It brings the entire community together including parents, local businesses and corporations. More importantly, it directly involves our student body in the process and teaches them the very valuable lesson of community involvement and helping those in need.” Students Sidhaant Rath and Natalie Mion, both 8th grade peer counselors, exemplify how many students feel about the Harvest Drive. “It makes us feel good to know that we’re helping people and making such a positive impact,” the student’s said. The Harvest Drive began at Country Isles Elementary School in Weston 20 years ago but now incorporates fundraising efforts and collections every Thanksgiving across the county. all created equal? No, they are not. Orthotics, sometimes referred to as “orthoses” or even “arch supports,” is a device inserted into a shoe. It can range from a felt pad to a custom-made shoe insert. It can correct an abnormal or irregular walking pattern. Orthotics allow people to stand, walk, and run better and with more comfort. While over the counter orthotics, typically seen in drug stores, are available and may help ease mild symptoms, they typically do not correct the wide range of symptoms that prescription foot orthoses can. Prescription orthoses are custom made to fit a person’s unique foot structure. Orthotics come in many shapes, sizes, and materials and fall into three general categories: those that change foot function, those that are mainly protective in design, and those that combine functional control and protection.

Rigid orthotics fall into the first category. They are designed to control function and are used normally for walking and dress shoes. They are often made of firm material like plastic or carbon fiber. They are made from a mold after a podiatric physician takes a plaster cast (or other image) of the foot. Rigid orthotics control motion in two major foot joints that lie below the ankle joint. They can improve or eliminate strains, aches, and pains in the legs, thighs, and lower back. Soft orthotics are mostly used to absorb shock, increase balance, and take pressure off sore spots of the foot. They are effective for diabetic, arthritic, and deformed feet. Soft orthotics are usually made of cushioned materials, so they can be worn against the sole of the foot. They extend from the heel past the ball of the foot, and include the toes. Soft orthotics, like rigid ones, are made from a mold after the podiatric physician takes a plaster cast. Lastly, there are the semi-rigid orthotics. They provide foot balance for walking or engaging in sports. They are typically made from soft material and reinforced with more rigid material. Sometimes they are prescribed for children with flat feet and in toeing or out toeing disorders. They are additionally used to help athletes mitigate pain while they compete. In comparison, a newly published report says that kids and teenagers who wear contact lenses feel a significant enhancement in their appearance. The research results show that starting at the age of eight, children may prefer being offered the choice of contact lenses. ne of the most difficult things that

Orthopedic Surgeons have to deal with is what to do with the knee that has irreversible cartilage damage. The knee joint, specifically the undersurface of the patella, the end of the femur and the top of the tibia are covered by a substance we call articular cartilage. This looks and functions like the carpet that is covering the floor in your house. It is a smooth cushioned surface that helps the knee joint move in a frictionless environment. Without healthy articular cartilage, the knee joint can not function properly. Exposed bone in the knee joint by deficient, inefficient cartilage leads to arthritis, pain and disability. Patients present to the office stating that they injured the knee joint. They complain of swelling, pain going up and down stairs, getting out of the car, changing directions, unable to run or jog without pain. The injury is usually after an event that the patient can recall without any problems. The Orthopedic Surgeon gets some simple X-Rays in the office and usually they are normal. You see, articular cartilage does not show up in X-rays. After a thorough physical exam the initial treatment usually consists of ice, rest, anti-inflammatory medications and physical therapy. However, if the initial physical exam demonstrates severe findings and/or the symptoms persist or they do not get resolved, then the patient will need to get an MRI Scan to check for articular cartilage problems. The MRI Scan is the diagnostic study of choice in the detection of articular cartilage damage (bottom photo), meniscus tears and ligament injuries. If the patient has an articular cartilage defect (bottom photo) this is considered to be a permanent problem for the knee joint. This leads to abnormal friction forces, inflammation, pain and eventual destruction of the rest of the knee joint. Classically, patients who continued to have problems eventually developed arthritis and require a total knee replacement. Today, with advances in science, we can offer patients alternatives to try to salvage the knee joint. This consists of procedures that can be done through small incisions in the knee joint (Arthroscopic Surgery). The arthroscope is the instrument that has allowed us to manage this issue through small incisions. We can do a chondrolasty with shaving, chondroplasty micro fracture or bone drilling or bone picking. The chondroplasty is stimulating your cartilage, stimulating your body to make new cartilage in the defective area. The recovery from this type of surgery usually requires the patient to use crutches for one month and in most cases the patient returns to full unrestricted sports activities in six to nine months from the day of the surgery. Other patients can have a transplant of cartilage (top photo). This is usually reserved for those patients who failed to heal with the chondroplasty and have a focal well circumscribe defect in the articular cartilage. The surgery is also done through mini incisions, usually two or three. The rehabilitation consists of crutches for four to six weeks and range of motion exercises. After this healing period, the patient returns to activities of daily living and finally to sports within six to nine months from the day of the surgery. Can You Defend Foreclosure & Obtain a Modification on Your Own? By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Attorney

or obtain a mortgage modification on your own, here are some sobering facts to consider. ▸▸ When the Florida legislature approved additional funding to clear the foreclosure backlog in June 2013, it also ordered our court system to clear 256,000 foreclosure cases per year through 2016. That’s more than 700 cases per day. ▸▸ Unlike other Florida judges, foreclosure judges are effectively temps who don’t have to face voters. ▸▸ Today, most foreclosure cases are set for trial or final judgment within 6-8 months, and any continuances of trial are routinely denied. ▸▸ Mortgage giant Freddie Mac pays mortgage servicers “bonuses” for expediting foreclosures and charges a daily penalty for delayed foreclosures. The most important tool you can use to defend against our court system’s quest to drain the dockets is to hire a qualified and experienced foreclosure defense attorney. Let’s get real, if they are too busy to meet with you personally to review your case, they will just be “too busy” to actually help you with your case. incredible results in 2014 that have made our community a better and safer place to live, work and visit. Crime rates are sharply down in the parts of Broward County policed by BSO. In 2013, we saw a 10% drop in overall crime. In 2014, crime dropped an additional 8%. This means that in two years, we’ve seen nearly a one-fifth drop in crime rates, which is huge! In this time period, we have helped bring about the lowest crime rate in South Florida in many decades. These results directly reflect the amazing work being performed daily by the dedicated men and women of BSO. Last year, BSO launched the V.I.P.E.R. unit to target the most dangerous violent criminals in Broward – and we saw a large drop in violent crime rates. This year, BSO added another innovative specialized unit: the Burglary Apprehension Team (BAT). The BAT combats residential burglaries in Broward, using a combination of reliable “old school” police detective work on the ground coupled with high-tech, computerized, predictive crime modeling intelligence. This combination has proven highly effective, helping to reduce residential burglaries agencywide in 2014 by 30%.

Our Civil Citation Program, aimed at keeping kids out of jail and in the classroom, has been aided by the new PROMISE Program partnership between BSO, various police agencies, the State Attorney’s Office and the Broward County School Board. The objective of the PROMISE Program is to end the “schoolhouseto-jailhouse” pipeline by offering in-school alternatives to arrests and suspensions. In 2014, juvenile arrests were down 16%, due in part to these innovative programs. BSO also launched the innovative Driveway Initiative last year, where neighbors come together in informal settings with law enforcement to exchange ideas, concerns and solutions. The Driveway Initiative is about applying different strategies to reduce crime and fostering stronger relationships with the communities we serve. It helps find local solutions to local problems. This year, I hope to expand these initiatives to help recapture an era when residents and businesses had strong, positive relationships with their neighbors and with their local law enforcement officers. Finally, we have worked to advance our Uniting Broward community initiative. BSO held a community conference and an outdoor festival to promote diversity, safety and security. These events were exciting new opportunities for law enforcement and residents to listen, understand and build connections. Understanding and embracing Broward’s vibrant diversity promotes better public safety. When we make an effort to become familiar with the things that make us different, we are safer and smarter as a result. By working together, we can make Broward County an even better place to call our home. I am looking forward to 2015 and continuing the successful work of this agency. My warmest wishes to each of you and your family for a happy, healthy and safe new year!
