Miramar Remembers Martin Luther King

By Terry Jaillet

Miramar celebrated the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. on January 17th with its annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Caravan. The parade departed the Mirmar multi-service complex at 10:00 am and included city leaders, representatives of the fire and police departments, and the community at large.

Residents from all walks of life came out to watch the procession pass. In addition to fire trucks, police cars, and convertibles carrying dignitaries, a truck with a large jumbotron-type video screen passed by playing some of Dr. King’s most memorable speeches.

In a prepared video, Miramar Mayor Wayne Messam commented “He gave the ultimate sacrifice fighting for equality for African Americans, those who are disenfranchised and just people in general. The city of Miramar takes the time to pause and recognize that he (Dr. King) is a symbol of hope.”

“He taught us that civil protests and fighting for something you believe in can actually work,” said Commissioner Alexandra Davis, “It is always good to reflect on our history so that a lot of those things are not repeated. We want our children and our children’s children to know what it took for us to get here.”

PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE CITY OF MIRAMAR I have seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we as a people will get to the promised land. So I’m happy tonight. I’m not worried about anything. I’m not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the lord.

Let us never forget.
