ebruary is Black History Month. The annual observance is celebrated in the United States, Canada, and the UK. In the U.S., school students learn about the contributions people of African descent have made to our county, communities, and the world. Many public observances are held across the country, and a renewed focus is made on the continuing struggles African Americans face. Before Black History Month was a nationally recognized observance, “Negro History Week” was created in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson. He chose the second week of February for its observance because that week typically includes the birthdays of Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. He wanted to encourage the teaching of Black History in schools. At that time, there was frequently little to no inclusion of the contributions and plight of African Americans in history classes. In the 1970s Negro History Week became Black History Month and is celebrated across the country. It is more important now than ever to remember the severe sacrifices African Americans have made. We must all remember historian George Santayana’s famous quip, “Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” Remembering the worst of our past, as well as, the best, will help us all continue to become better versions of ourselves.

When my father, Bruce, started A Shade Above in 1984, he had a vision of a showroom-based shades and blinds company where customers could see full size, interactive displays of all the latest products on the market. Being a Senior in South Florida

he Senior Games movement started in Florida almost fifty years ago when the Golden Age Games was created in Sanford. A task force was then appointed to study the games and determine a course of action to take moving forward. Without hesitation, the committee decided that it was the right time to bring all existing local senior games together to better serve the needs of seniors as well as standardize them to lead to a state championship. The Florida Senior Games provides seniors an opportunity to interact with other seniors as they play in various sports and activities. However, the focus is not on winning but participating. The games encourage and promote a healthy lifestyle, an exclusive multi-sport festival, and the chance to compete at the local, state, and national levels. Throughout the years, the Florida Senior Games has grown exponentially, but this year was even more special as the 30th anniversary was celebrated. The 2021 games were recently held in December at the Jim Ward Community
Center in Plantation. This event served as a qualifier for the 2022 National Senior Games which will be held in May in Fort Lauderdale. Miramar Vice Mayor Yvette Colbourne sponsored ten seniors who were enrolled in Miramar’s senior center to participate in the Domino Championship. Like all other sports, all games are played and followed by the rule book. This event was a multiple partners tournament in which individuals and/or random partners played over seven (7) rounds of one set each round. Win or lose, all players were able to compete in each of the seven (7) Rounds. At the end of the seventh round, the player with the highest accumulated score wins the Tournament. The ambitious bunch received transportation from Miramar to the City of Plantation where they each donned their “Senior Domino” tournament gear and competitive spirit. They enjoyed the camaraderie and a festive meal with others who shared the same passion. The ten participating seniors from Miramar were: Laveita Byers, Hazel Bushay, Dennis

Miramar Remembers Martin Luther King By Terry Jaillet

iramar celebrated the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. on January 17th with its annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Caravan. The parade departed the Mirmar multi-service complex at 10:00 am and included city leaders, representatives of the fire and police departments, and the community at large. Residents from all walks of life came out to watch the procession pass. In addition to
fire trucks, police cars, and convertibles carrying dignitaries, a truck with a large jumbotron-type video screen passed by playing some of Dr. King’s most memorable speeches. In a prepared video, Miramar Mayor Wayne Messam commented “He gave the ultimate sacrifice fighting for equality for African Americans, those who are disenfranchised and just people in general. The city of
Miramar takes the time to pause and recognize that he (Dr. King) is a symbol of hope.” “He taught us that civil protests and fighting for something you believe in can actually work,” said Commissioner Alexandra Davis, “It is always good to reflect on our history so that a lot of those things are not repeated. We want our children and our children’s children to know what it took for us to get here.”

Jack Zink Memorial Scholarships Are Available for Theater and Journalism Students
he Carbonell Awards are seeking college-bound high school students to apply for 2022 Jack Zink Memorial Scholarships. Theater and journalism students from Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach Counties are encouraged to apply for $2,000 Scholarships. Since 1978, the Carbonell Awards has given out more than $110,000 in scholarships to winning applicants. The selection of scholarship recipients is based on talent, experience, and demonstrated commitment to theater and/or journalism, with one winner from each of the three area counties (Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach) receiving a $2,000 scholarship. The selection process is chaired by Carbonell Vice President Javier Siut, a member of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs. Eligibility Requirements: • Applicant must be a graduating high school senior with a minimum 2.5 GPA.

Applicant must be a resident of Broward, Miami-Dade or Palm Beach County. • Applicant must be nominated by a mentor from school or theatre (no parents and no self-nominations). • If selected, the applicant must be accepted into an accredited College to pursue a degree in theatre or journalism. • Completed application must be submitted no later than February 7, 2022. • The interview/audition for scholarship finalists will be held on Sunday, March 13, 2022, at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. The Carbonell Awards fosters the artistic growth of professional theater in South Florida by celebrating the diversity of our theater artists, providing educational scholarships, and building audience appreciation and civic pride by highlighting achievements of our theater community. The Carbonell Awards also celebrate the
accomplishments of local artistic leaders by presenting several Special Awards. Over the last 45 years, the Carbonell family has donated more than $250,000 in awards. The scholarship is named for Jack Zink (1947-2008) who was a major voice in South Florida entertainment coverage for more than three decades. Python Elimination Program Accepting New Participants
N
on-native Burmese pythons have established a breeding population in South Florida and are one of the most concerning invasive species in Everglades National Park. Pythons compete with native wildlife for food, which includes mammals, birds, and other reptiles.
The Burmese python is now distributed across more than a thousand square miles of southern Florida, including all of Everglades National Park and areas to the north including Big Cypress National Preserve and Collier-Seminole State Forest. A number of Burmese pythons have been found in the Florida Keys, but there is not yet confirmation of a breeding population in the Keys. The South Florida Water Management District Governing Board is taking aggressive action to protect the Everglades and eliminate invasive pythons from across the landscape. Starting in March 2017, the Python Elimination Program incentivizes a limited number of public-spirited individuals to humanely euthanize these destructive snakes which have become an invasive apex predator in the Everglades. The program provides access to python removal agents on designated lands in Monroe, Miami-Dade, Broward, Collier, Hendry, Lee, and Palm Beach counties. The program is now accepting applications for new python removal

back of the ankle can occur from a dancer standing “en point” or “demi point.” Pain behind the ankle is due to a bone prominence that pinches the soft tissue or due to a fractured bone or cartilage in the back of the ankle (Os Trigonum). A deep pain in the back of the ankle is felt and is made worse if the foot points down. Treatment includes rest, physical therapy and
anti-inflammatory medication. If the pain does not improve, a Cortisone injection is given to decrease inflammation and scar tissue. Unresolved pain may be treated surgically, thus allowing a full return to dance. The back of the ankle is cleaned out and a small piece of bone may be removed with arthroscopic surgery to allow the dancer to return to full activity. Rarely an open procedure is needed. Pain in the front of the ankle is usually caused by thickening of the ankle joint lining and can cause pain while moving the leg forward on the foot. This impingement syndrome is usually associated with an ankle ligament injury and can become very painful, especially the first thing in the morning when getting out of bed to walk or after sitting for a short period of time and getting up to walk. The inflammation and soreness usually lessen with activity but return later on in the day. Physical therapy and a short course of anti-inflammatory medication may be necessary to reduce the inflammation in the ankle joint. If that does not improve, a Fluoroscopic Guided Cortisone injection may be necessary to reduce the thickening of the soft tissue. If conservative measures fail, a Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injection can be given into the joint to improve healing potential. In some cases, the impingement in the front part of the ankle does not improve and arthroscopic surgery may be necessary to completely regain the ankle mobility without discomfort.

This school year alone, the Miramar Police Department has investigated numerous cases and arrested several students for making such threats. After investigations have been conducted, the majority of these threats have proved not to be credible. Most students making threats have motives ranging from wanting to disrupt a school function to making the threat as a prank. They fail to realize that their actions can have devastating consequences, putting not only the public, but their lives at risk. Those making threats also fail to realize the loss of valuable law enforcement resources that could have been directed to solving or preventing other crimes and the emotional distress caused to the entire community.
We recommend that you:
your child that any threat ▸ Remind made will be thoroughly investigated
and the consequences are severe, affecting more than just their education and future career choices, even if the child’s intentions were to be humorous. Threats can come in the form of conversations, writings, emails/text messages, and/or social media posts using suggestive words or images. Be receptive to answering your child’s questions and make sure they know the lines of communication with you and our department are open to discuss any aspect of a school threat. Monitor your child’s social media accounts and talk to him/her about using social media responsibly. If you see something, say something: report any suspicious activity immediately. Do not forward or share the threat until the proper authorities have had a chance to investigate it. Doing so could cause panic or spread misinformation. We were the first agency in Broward County to provide full-time SROs at every public school and have had a school resource officer (SRO) program for decades. Today, our public and charter schools all benefit from the fundamental concept of the SRO program - having students and faculty interact with officers on a day-to-day basis, thus building trust and developing relationships with the youth of our community. Unfortunately, no school district is immune to threats or acts of violence. We must all remain vigilant. Please remember that communication is key to working together effectively.
