New Year Brings New Beginnings

ew Year’s Day serves as a point in time for many of us to make a change; our New Year’s Resolutions. These resolutions, big and small, can be a helpful way for people to motivate themselves to improve their lives in a positive way. Like many people, our New Year’s Resolutions are focused on living healthier lives: we want to exercise more, eat healthier, and sleep better. To achieve these goals, we must develop new healthy habits. William James, a turn-of-the-century psychologist, was one of the first researchers to study habit forming. He discovered three keys to establishing a new habit: (i) Creating an environment to reinforce the behavior you are seeking; (ii) Sticking to the new routine until the habit is fully formed; (iii) Acting now, without delay. For our resolution to get healthy, we have dedicated Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings to working out. We have pledged to make sure we don’t miss a day, at least for the first two months of the year. If you have a New Year’s Resolution, block out the time, don’t let anyone or anything interfere with your focus, and, in the words of the Nike slogan, Just do it! ore than 100 of man’s best friends came out (with their owners, of course) to the first-ever City of Miramar Puppy Palooza on Saturday, November 19 at Miramar Town Center. The doggies enjoyed a fashion show just for them, an obstacle course, puppy photo booth and more. There were on-site dog-friendly vendors as well as the chance for pet adoptions on the spot.

Families near and far came out for the event and enjoyed the day’s festivities. Elizabeth Valera, Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Miramar, said she was very happy with the great turn out for the event. “We wanted to make sure we provided a fun and recreational event for “Man’s Best Friend” who are also our residents. I think we achieved that.”

he City of Miramar’s Mayor Wayne Messam was recently named National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials (NBC-LEO) Presidentelect during the National League of Cities conference (November 16-19, 2016) held in Pittsburgh, PA. In this new capacity he will administer leadership to an organization that has more than 200 members who represent millions of Americans. As an organization, NBC-LEO works independently with its members to inform them on issues affecting the African-American community and helps to devise ways to achieve their community objectives through legislation and direct action. They conduct their annual meetings in conjunction with National League of Cities (NLC) City Summit and its Congressional City Conference. “It is an honor to serve as President-Elect of the National League of Cities National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials. Kids and Families at Joe Dimaggio Children’s Hospital Benefit From ANF Group Tour de Broward BY JILL SHARPE

he message on the shirt Naida Revelo wore in her first 5K run made it clear what motivated the grandmother to take on the physical challenge: Joe D’s Saved My Grandson’s Life.” Revelo was among the more than 6,000 people who participated in the 2016 Tour de Broward, each one having their own reason for cycling, running, or walking. A similar number is expected in 2017, each of them united by a desire to support Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, the region’s largest pediatric facility serving Broward, Palm Beach and northern Miami-Dade counties. A facility that has impacted many lives. “This is an opportunity for South Florida to assist our efforts to provide safe, high quality, cost-effective patient and family-centered care,” said Memorial Healthcare System President & CEO Aurelio M. Fernandez, III, FACHE. “We want everyone in our community to get involved.” The event, which takes place Sunday, February 26,at Miramar Regional Park - has raised more than $2.5 million in its previous seven years for Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, a facility that provides care regardless of one’s ability to pay.

Friar George Bettinger Interviews Celebrities for “Mom & Pop Shop” Radio Show BY JILL SHARPE

eorge Bettinger of Miramar first began his own show business career at the age of 18 as an impersonator. He created one of the early cable TV shows called Movie Magic where he showed nostalgic cartoons like follow the bouncing ball. Legendary broadcaster Joe Franklin really enjoyed Bettinger’s impersonations and featured him on his show regularly. Then Bettinger wrote some bits and did occasional on camera cameos on The Uncle Floyd show. He went on to appear in radio and TV commercials and even played the voice of the red M&M. Bettinger was recently made a member of the prestigious Friars Club in New York. For the past seven years, he has hosted a worldwide radio show called “The Mom & Pop Shop” from a studio right here in Miramar. The show, which has been featured on NBC and ABC network news, is what they call a “hybrid” in today’s world as it brings the charm of old school entertainment to the fast pace of the internet. “My mentors were Joe Franklin, Soupy Sales and Uncle Floyd,” Bettinger said. “They all taught me a great deal. The Miramar Cultural Center is thrilled to present an amazing tribute to the legendary performer on January 13th at 8 p.m. This dazzling evening of pure musical joy stars Brian Owens, who is often referred to as the “second coming of Marvin Gaye.” Owens, who has performed at the White House for First Lady Michelle Obama, dazzles audiences with performances that are full of soul and love well beyond his peers of today. His refined style combining classic soul with a slight modern touch is why audiences everywhere are calling him the new voice of American soul. Robert E. Palmer Named Miramar Interim Fire-Chief SECTION HEAD COMMUNITY NEWS

South Florida native of Cuban decent, Chief Palmer grew up in the City of Miramar and graduated from Miramar High School. He began his career as a Firefighter/EMT with Miramar Fire-Rescue in 1992, in the aftermath of hurricane Andrew. He has always considered himself fortunate to serve the residents of Miramar, a city he lived in for 38 years. Chief Palmer has a Master’s degree in Emergency Services Management; a Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health/Fire Science and an Associate’s degree in Fire Science. He has served as Deputy Fire Chief since 2014 and has previously held numerous other leadership roles within the department. Chief Palmer holds many professional certifications: State Certified Live Fire Trainer, American Heart BLS and ACLS Instructor, Dive Rescue I and II Certifications, State Certified Fire Officer I, American Heart BLS and ACLS Provider, State Certified Paramedic, State Certified Firefighter, State Certified Fire Inspector, State Certified Fire Instructor, and State Certified Emergency Medical Technician. He is the driving force behind the very successful Fire-Rescue Cadets, a department program he spearheaded in order to introduce local students to the fire service. When not at work, Chief Palmer’s hobbies include vehicle restorations, boating and photography. Chief Palmer thanked City Manager Kathleen Woods-Richardson for entrusting him with the fire chief’s significant responsibility and honor and he thanked the countless number of members in the fire department and other departments within the city who have helped him grow professionally and personally by their service as valuable mentors, team members and colleagues. “As a department, we have made many accomplishments,” said Chief Palmer. “Now with the passing of the axe and with the support of our members, I commit to continue the forward momentum that we started and will continue moving forward making this department better than we found it.” For more information, please call 954-367-9117.

What Is A Cataract? ataracts are the leading cause of decreased vision in adults older than 65. It is the most common surgical procedure for elderly people. You can still get an “age-related” cataract when you are in your 40s or 50s, although most likely it will be small and not rob you of your vision. Only 15 percent of people are affected with cataracts by age 55, but this figure jumps to 50 percent by age 75, and 90 percent by age 85. It is important to note, however, that cataracts worsen over time … so it’s never too late-or early-to try to prevent them and/or treat them.

What is a cataract?

A cataract is an opaque spot on the lens of the eye that you can’t see through. The lens lies behind the iris and the pupil, and works like a camera lens. It focuses light onto the retina at the back of the eye, where an image is recorded. The lens also adjusts the eye’s focus, which allows you to see things clearly, both up close and far away. The lens is made of mostly water and protein. But as we age, some of the protein may clump together and start to cloud a small area of the lens. This is a cataract. Over time, the cataract may grow larger and cloud more of the lens, making it harder to see. The haze can vary in size, density, and location, which means its effect on your vision will also vary. At first, many people experience an overall reduction in their vision. They may need more light to read by or may have difficulty reading street signs while driving. A cataract can also affect depth perception, which is particularly dangerous for the elderly, who are more prone to falling.

What causes cataracts?

▸ Free radicals - natural by products of metabolism - are highly reactive chemicals that cause oxidation, which in turn causes aging. ▸ Toxins, pharmaceutical drugs, and smoking ▸ Diabetes (high levels of sugar in the blood contribute to cataract formation, so it’s not surprising that diabetics are 3-4 times more likely to have cataracts) ▸ The protein in the lens changes from the wear and tear it takes over the years, and hardens and loses its ability to focus.

Treatment of cataracts

Cataracts can only be treated surgically. This procedure would be performed by an Ophthalmologist, and is often an outpatient procedure. The surgery often involves placement of intraocular lens (IOL), which is used to replace the eyes natural lens, which is removed in the cataract surgery. Glasses may be required for far/near correction following the procedure, depending on the type IOL used and the surgical outcome. The pre- and post-surgical care of the cataract patient may be and often is provided by an Optometrist. South Florida Loan Modification Program Is A Huge Success BY OMAR J. ARCIA, ESQ. FORECLOSURE DEFENSE AND BANKRUPTCY PROTECTION ATTORNEY

t has been over three years since the Mortgage Modification Mediation Program (“MMM”) was launched in all South Florida Bankruptcy Courts. This innovative program started as a direct response to the frustration experienced by many homeowners who have tried to modify their home loans time and time again without success. The success rate for traditional loan modifications outside of bankruptcy is less than 15%. So far, about 85% of the eligible homeowners that have completed the MMM program have obtained permanent loan modifications with significantly better loan terms, lower interest rates, and even huge principal forgiveness. Here are some of the other benefits of the MMM Program that you need to consider: ▸▸ Under the MMM program, the foreclosure process stops immediately and any foreclosure sale date is automatically cancelled without further hearing. ▸▸ The entire program is court supervised, a mediator will be appointed to your case, and all negotiations must be concluded and a decision rendered within 150 days of the date a mediation Order is signed by the Court. ▸▸ Another frustrating feature for homeowners about conventional loan modification applications is that lenders continuously misplace documents. Under the MMM program, there are no more “lost documents” by the bank since all documents are uploaded to a single website portal to which all parties have immediate access. ▸▸ If the lender refuses to provide a timely response to a completed loan modification application, or even refuses to participate in the program, the homeowner now has the right to seek assistance from a federal judge to ensure that the lender complies with its obligations. This enforcement component is not available to homeowners trying to do a loan modification on their own. ▸▸ The program applies to both Chapter 7 and 13 bankruptcies, but the program is significantly more successful in Chapter 13 cases. ▸▸ There is an increased likelihood that your Chapter 13 Bankruptcy Plan will be confirmed by the Trustee given that once the mortgage loan is modified under MMM, the homeowner’s future financial picture is more clearly defined. While these are exciting new benefits for any homeowner struggling with a loan modification of their mortgage, a Chapter 13 bankruptcy petition is NOT a do it yourself proposition. Many consumers that attempt to file their own, have their cases dismissed with prejudice for 180 days for failure to comply with the Bankruptcy Code. This means you cannot refile for bankruptcy during that time. appy New Year my fellow Miramarians! We’ve just concluded a great year in our City but we have much more to do and look forward to in 2017. Here’s an update on our great City: Capital Projects funded by the passage of the 2013 Revenue Bond continue to make progress and come online. The Miramar Amphitheater at Regional Park is scheduled to be completed and operational in a few months. The Bandshell at Shirley Branca Park as well as other park renovations around the city are nearing their completion dates. Fire station 107, which will service the central area of the city, will be operational this year and will reduce response times. The Adult Day Care Facility will receive its state license which will allow assistive services to our seniors who cannot be left home alone. As you can see, Miramar continues to make progress ensuring that all of these capital projects are successfully completed. There are also updates on issues of importance to our residents including the Kanter Real Estate, LLC oil drilling application and the White Rock Quarry blasting that is impacting our community out west. The city is optimistic that oil drilling will be defeated given the recent denial by the State. In regards to the blastings taking place in Miami Dade County, the Miramar Commission has passed a resolution to object to the blastings and has authorized our city attorney to forward a list of demands to address many of the issues reported by residents and we will continue to work on behalf of residents to address the many concerns reported. This issue is challenging due to the fact Miramar has no jurisdictional authority but will enforce every legal option available to us to seek a remedy. To help provide assistance to residents who wish to make home improvements or even get access to high speed internet, a number of programs that will make life more manageable for some residents are in place: the PACE Program which allows for energy efficient upgrades to your home or property via deferred payment through Cityapproved vendors is now available. Some of the qualifying improvements include roof replacements, impact windows or even air conditioning units. For families who may be faced with challenges in getting access to high speed internet, Miramar and Comcast Cable has an Internet Essentials program that provides internet access and low cost computers. In addition, for families who may be in financial transition or hard times, Miramar is collaborating with Broward County to provide financial aid for those in financial difficulty. The Mayor’s Office will hold Workshops with more information about all of these programs. We all make promises, be they solemn (“till death do us part”) or playful (“there are no monsters under the bed.”) Many promises define our character and reinforce our relationships with those we love. As a new year approaches, promises traditionally take the form of resolutions. Perhaps your 2017 resolutions include adding regular exercise to your daily routine, or eating a diet that contains more fruits and vegetables. This year, why not add to your list of resolutions the promise of protecting those you love? Consider the following: ▸ Who will take care of me if I can’t take care of myself? Do I have adequate insurance? Is there a clear successor to manage my financial and business affairs? Are my personal wishes set forth in writing so they are known and accessible when needed? ▸ After I am gone, how will my family and loved ones manage the debts, taxes, and other legal obligations I leave behind? Have I laid out a way forward to reach important family and financial goals? ▸ Who will take over my business if I am disabled or gone? What can I do to increase the probability that my business will survive after me? ▸ Who will care for my young children if my spouse and I cannot? What financial protection and instructions have I left for their care? ▸ When and how will my spouse, children and other loved ones receive their inheritance? How can I be sure they receive their gifts in a manner which maximizes use and enjoyment and protects against creditors and predators? Thinking about these matters is daunting. But because we care about our families we are obligated to raise the questions and explore the answers. As spouses, we want to provide the resources and safeguards to make our loved ones’ futures more secure. As parents, we want our children to have a happy and secure life, especially if that life does not include us. Why not resolve to start the process of caring for your family should something happen to you? The first step is to meet with a qualified estate planning attorney to design and put into place a plan which will ensure that these are promises you can keep. If you have already done your estate planning, good for you! You should also make a habit of reviewing your plan, including beneficiary designations for insurance policies, retirement accounts and 401(k) plans. Changes in your financial situation, family circumstances, and the law all conspire to make the review, revision, and updating of your estate plan essential. Estate planning is a deliberate, premeditated act of love. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?
