Happy Mother’s Day!

Y

ou ’ ve probably heard the expression “April

showers bring May flowers.” Well, the timing couldn’t be better because flowers are a beautiful way to show Mom how much you love and appreciate her. Let’s all take a little pause and honor our mothers, and the mothers of our children, for all they do. They work hard to care for us, look after us, and pamper us every single day. Let’s set aside one day and pamper them for a change! May also signifies that summer is just around the corner. Before we know it, school will be done, the afterschool activities will be over, and the pressures of everyday life will be eased just a little. This is the time to relax and enjoy our time together…because August will be here in a blink of an eye.

32nd Annual Take-A-Kid Fishin’ Rodeo Offers Quality Family Time By Debby Teich

O

n J une 7, Davie children will trade their elec-

tronics for fishing rods as they spend some quality time with their parents, grandparents and friends at the 32nd Annual Take-A-Kid Fishin’ Rodeo. It will be held at Wolf Lake Park, 5400 SW 76th Avenue in Davie. “Fishing is a great way to spend quality time together,” said Davie resident Greg Frank, who takes his kids fishing most weekends. “We always have some great conversations while we are waiting for the fish to bite.” There is a $9 fee to participate, which includes lunch, bait (live red worms), a goodie bag, an event cap for the first 250 kids to register, and all the fun you can handle. Extra live red worms will be available for sale or you can bring your own. Kids need to bring their own fishing poles. All children must be accompanied by an adult throughout the event. Once families find a spot on the lake, they are permitted to fish from 9 to 11am. The kids will be divided into three age groups: 5 and under, 6 to 8, and 9 to 12. When they catch a fish, they bring it to the judges table, where a member of Everglades Bass Anglers will help to identify, measure, and unhook the fish before releasing it back into the water. Prizes will be awarded in all age groups for the length of the fish (not for its weight) in the following categories: the most fish caught over 3 inches, the longest bass caught, the longest fish caught (not a bass), the most unusual catch, and sportsmanship. Some of the prizes include fishing rods and reels, tackle boxes and trophies.

Some of last year’s participants pose with Davie Mayor Judy Paul (back left) and Council Woman Susan Starkey (back right).

Registration begins at 7:30am on the morning of the event. No pre-registration. Kids must bring their own fishing poles. For information, visit www.davie-fl.gov.

have an emergency, they call the Davie Police Department or Fire Rescue for help. On May 17, they will have an opportunity to meet and learn more about some of the people who serve them at the Town of Davie Police and Fire Expo. Approximately 1,000 people are expected to attend the annual event held at the Public Safety Complex, from 10am to 2pm. “The event is a great opportunity for adults and children to interact with our officers and to get to know the Davie Police Department by seeing and learning about many of the services that we provide to the community,” said Sergeant Ed Smith, Public Information Officer for the Davie Police Department. “The Expo gives us an opportunity to showcase many of our specialized units, the police department building, and our various programs, all in a fun and exciting atmosphere. We really hope that everyone will come out and participate.” Visitors to the Expo will enjoy demonstrations from the Police Motorcycle Unit, SWAT team, K-9 team, and Dive team, as well as a Repelling exhibition, fire extinguisher demonstration, vehicle extrication drill, and CPR demonstration. Throughout the day,

they can explore fire engines, rescue trucks, SWAT trucks, community response vehicles, the smoke trailer, the Crime Scene Unit, and more. They can visit with Sparky the Fire Dog and McGruff the Crime Dog. They can also tour the inside of Fire Station 65 and the Police Department, where they will see the equipment that the firefighters and police officers use and carry. Children can even try on some of the gear. Local and state agencies will have tables and booths set up with information about Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), stroke awareness, blood pressure checks, child fingerprinting, child car seat safety, drowning prevention, Davie Crime Watch, and more. The Food Truck Round Ups will also be at the event, offering a variety of delicious foods. Cole Winston of Davie plans to attend for the second year with his three young children. “My kids loved touring the fire station and trying on the gear,” said Winston. “They also loved all of the demonstrations. We are all excited for this year’s event.” The Public Safety Complex is located at 1230 South Nob Hill Road. For information, visit www.davie-fl.gov.

Davie Road Designated As Purple Heart Trail By Debby Teich

Mayor Judy Paul and the Davie Town Council designate Davie Road as a Purple Heart Trail.

I

n J uly 2013, the Town of Davie became a P urple H eart Community. Mayor Judy Paul and the Davie Town Council recently unveiled the first of 12 signs that designate Davie Road as a Purple Heart Trail. “It is our duty as Americans to honor, respect, and acknowledge the heroic actions of the men and women who carry the Purple Heart distinction,” said Mayor Paul. “This is the only Purple Heart community and the only Purple Heart Trail south of Tampa. We are making history today.” The Purple Heart is a combat decoration awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces, who die or become wounded by an instrument of war in the

12

hands of the enemy. The organization, now known as the Military Order of the Purple Heart, was formed in 1932 for the protection and mutual interest of all who have received the decoration, and is the only veteran’s service organization comprised strictly of “combat” veterans. The purpose of the Purple Heart Trail is to create a symbolic and honorary system of roads, highways, bridges, and other monuments. It serves as a reminder to those who use the road system that others have paid a high price for their freedom to travel and live in a free society. The 77th Annual Orange Blossom Parade followed the unveiling ceremony. The theme of year’s parade was “Davie Honors the Armed Forces and Acknowledges Davie Road as a Purple Heart Trail.” Jerry Olivo, past commander of the Herald Square Chapter 126, and Marvin Simon, former Commander of the Jewish War Veterans Post 730, were the Grand Marshals of the parade. “It is important to honor our Vets, who gave their lives for our country,” said Olivo. “If not for our Veterans, we would not be here today,” said Simon. “Every city should have a Purple Heart roadway. I am proud to live in the Town of Davie, which honors its Vets.” Davie Purple Heart recipients or the families of those awarded posthumously should contact Mayor Paul at 954-797-1030, or send an email to judy_paul@davie-fl.gov. Include recipient’s name, mailing address, phone number, email address, branch of service, years served, and any other details you may want to share. For information, visit www.davie-fl.gov.

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Opens in Davie By Debby Teich

D

An angel Moroni statue stands at nearly 100 feet on the center spire above the 30,500 square-foot temple. Unlike a cathedral, the interior is not constructed with large meeting rooms that hold large numbers of people at one time. Instead, it is made up of numerous smaller rooms designed to accommodate functions such as marriages, baptisms and small gatherings, as well as personal reflection and contemplation.

avie is now home to the

second Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Florida and the 143rd operating temple of the Church worldwide. The temple was formally dedicated on May 4, following a cultural event the prior day that featured music and dance. The Church announced plans to build the new temple in October 2009 and broke ground in June 2011. It will serve approximately 25,000 Church Exterior members from congregations in South Florida. The church was open for public viewing for a three-week period, but that has ended. Now that the temple has been formally dedicated, it will only be open to faithful Latterday Saints. People who wish to attend religious services can visit the Church’s 18,000plus meetinghouses. Mormans believe that their temples are the most sacred places on earth. In keeping with the Church’s standards Instruction room of temple building, the materials and workmanship are of the highest quality, and the grounds are intended to bring a sense of peace and tranquility to members, as well as the surrounding community.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is located at 3901 SW 154th Avenue in Davie. It is closed on Sundays. For information, visit www.mormon.org.

28th Annual New Horizon Golf Classic to Benefit Children’s Home By Debby Teich

V

olunteers at N ew H orizon U nited M ethodist Church in

Southwest Ranches have been busy preparing for the 28th Annual New Horizon Golf Classic and Silent Auction Luncheon on May 10. Proceeds will benefit the Florida United Methodist Children’s Home, a faith-based, welcoming and diverse Home that provides care to children, youth and families throughout Florida. “The event supports children, is on a beautiful course, includes a delicious lunch, and will be a lot of fun,” said Wanda Stalnake, New Horizon United Methodist Church volunteer. “It is for a great cause and we encourage everyone to participate.” The Classic will be held at Jacaranda Golf Club in Plantation. It features an 8am shotgun start. One lucky golfer will get to drive a sports car for two years, compliments of Pompano Ford, for getting a hole-in-one. The tournament ends with an awards luncheon and a silent auction, with items such as family vacations, sports memorabilia, gift baskets, hotel and restaurant certificates, spa visits, golf course foursomes, and much more. The cost is $150 for a single or $500 for a foursome, including greens fee, cart, drawing ticket, range balls, luncheon, shirt and/or gift bag, and other fun. Non-golfers are also welcome and can pay $35 to attend the luncheon and silent auction. This is the 11th year that the golf tournament will benefit the Florida United Methodist

Children’s Home, which helps over 1,500 children each year. What began as the Florida Methodist Orphanage in 1908 has become a 100-acre safe haven for children who have been abused or are victims of broken and dysfunctional families. It gives them a safe place to heal and get support, so they can grow into healthy, educated adults. The Children’s Home offers specialized residential care and treatment with nurturing house-parents and therapists who help each child. Additionally, the Home reaches into the community by recruiting, training, licensing and monitoring loving foster care families and adoption services. This year, the proceeds of the New Horizon Golf Classic and Silent Auction will be used to help launch the Home’s Open Hearts Family Services Foster Care Program in South Florida. This program has been established in other Florida counties with huge success, because it carefully matches the child to the best foster parents and then provides the important ongoing physical, mental, and emotional support required. For information on the golf tournament, call 954-217-2551 or visit www.newhorizonumc.com/golfandauction2014.html. For information on the Florida United Methodist Children’s Home, visit www.allchildrenfirst.org. Davie’s Actors Community Theatre Presents Marvin’s Room By Debby Teich

T

his month , Davie residents can experience

live theater right in their own neighborhood. The Actors Community Theatre of Davie will present the last show of the season - Marvin’s Room by Scott McPherson. Performances are May 9, 10, 16, and 17 at 8pm and May 10, 11, 17, and 18 at 2pm. This powerful, moving and sometimes hilarious play is the basis of the Oscar nominated film starring Diane Keaton, Meryl Streep and Leonardo DiCaprio. Estranged since their father’s stroke some 17 years earlier, sisters Lee and Bessie lead separate lives in separate states until a family crisis brings them together. The reunion forces them to take stock of their lives and, in the process, rediscover the meaning of “family.” The results are unpredictable, riveting and poignant. ACT of Davie’s production of Marvin’s Room is directed by Geoff Short. The cast features: Elli Murray (Bessie), Wendi Librach (Lee), Lori Berger (Ruth), James Mobley (Hank), Bryan Germano (Charlie), Stanley Ross (Dr. Wally), Terri Beck (Dr. Charlotte), and Larry Bressler (Bob/Director). Since 2000, ACT has provided residents with a way to enjoy local theater. It all started when the Davie Town Council requested that an ad appear in the Town’s local paper asking

for thespians. Several people responded and became the nucleus for the Town’s first community theatre. The volunteer group is funded by the Town of Davie and run by its Board of Directors. The board’s script committee selects three shows to produce every year and then sends out audition notices throughout South Florida. The director chooses cast members, who have ranged in age from 6 to more than 80. Some are first-time actors, while others have been acting for years. The plays are performed over two consecutive weekends and often sell-out. “The plays are always very professionally done and you cannot beat the price,” said Harry Pickler, who has attended many of the productions. All productions are held at the Davie Pine Island Multi-purpose Center, 3801 S. Pine Island Rd. Tickets are $12 at the door; $10 in advance or $8 for groups of 10 or more. For information, call 954-797-1153 or 954-473-0372, send an email to billfra@usa.netcall or visit www.davie-fl.gov.

TAG USA Gymnastics Continues to Celebrate and Innovate By Stacey Bomser

T

AG USA Gymnastics owners Michael and Marissa Zoldan are celebrating a milestone this year – their fifth anniversary as gym owners. They are also celebrating the continued success of their gymnastics program. With Michael’s business acumen and Marissa’s training as an Elite gymnast, the couple totally reinvented TAG USA Gymnastics. Through their expertise and passion, the powerhouse gym has produced State and National Champions and continues to grow and expand. They share the secrets of their success and what’s in store for the future of TAG USA Gymnastics.

It’s hard to believe it’s been five years since you bought TAG USA Gymnastics. What have you accomplished in this time? Marissa: We have

used our progressive training system to develop USAG State, Regional and National Champions like no other gym. Before we bought TAG, our children were in a stagnant local gym and we were determined to build our gym very differently. We definitely are different! Here at TAG USA, all classes have lesson plans, our coaches are mature and active, and the 38,000 square-foot, stateof-the-art facility is amazing. Once a parent tours this facility and meets our staff, they see the difference between TAG USA and other gyms that are out there.

Your summer camp program has always been popular. Why do you think so many children want to spend their summer at TAG USA Gymnastics? Michael: Our

sports camp is unique and different. It’s all action with no movie time and no sitting. The boys’ groups play indoor basketball, soccer and lots of trampoline and flipping. Our girls’ groups concentrate on gymnastics and a lot of tumbling. The campers also love meeting the famous sports figures that visit our camp. Last summer we welcomed Olympic Gold Medalist Aly Raisman.

TAG USA Gymnastics has always been on the cutting edge. What new and exciting programs do you offer? Marissa: International

Coach Dennitza Bengtsson has begun classes and a competitive team for Rhythmic Gymnastics. There are a couple of rhythmic gyms in East Fort Lauderdale and Miami, but none in this area. We love the balance of dance and gymnastics and look forward to creating another winning program for rhythmic gymnasts.

20

May 2014 | davie town times

You already provide camp on school days off and breaks, have you thought of offering an after-care program? Michael: We are ready to

begin afterschool pick-up in Weston and Cooper City for the new school year. At TAG USA, we have clean vans, properly licensed and insured drivers, and a safe and separate aftercare study room and multi-purpose gym. With over 50 families on our wait list, I know that parents are impressed and eager to have their children in our aftercare program.

Your Boys Team has had some amazing accomplishments at competitions lately. What are some of their successes? Marissa: TAG

USA’s Boys Team is by far the most complete and best in this area. There are over 40 team athletes with three full coaches, and we are the only gym with all of the regulation equipment. I wouldn’t understand why anyone would want to train anywhere else. Twenty-nine TAG USA athletes competed at the USAG State Championships with seven TAG USA athletes finishing as 1st Place Champions. Overall, we had eleven 1st Place event champs, 23 2nd place and 23 3rd place winners as well as Qualifier to Nationals. It’s a great team with great coaches.

Your Girls Team has also seen much success, including back-to-back Florida State Championships and a National Champion. What are you planning to expand on this success? Michael: When we first

bought the gym, we excused the older Optional girls because of poor training habits. Now, five years later, the girls that have trained through our progressive system are now young Optional gymnasts. Along the way, they have won multiple individual and team state championships and have become part of an exciting new Optional program. For upper level and passionate gymnasts, we are starting the Two-a-Day/Virtual Home School program this summer. This program will create earlier and twice-a-day training sessions for fast-track gymnasts who are targeting national competitions and real college scholarships. It’s a very exciting time at TAG USA!

TAG USA Gymnastics is located at 1951 North Commerce Parkway in Weston. TAG USA offers recreational gymnastics classes for children from ages 12 months and up. Classes are offered in ten-week sessions. TAG USA has championship competitive girls and boys gymnastics teams, cheer team, and a trampoline and tumbling team. For more information or registration for classes, birthday parties, summer camp, please call (954) 384-9393 or visit www.TagGymnastics.com.

Is Your Body in Need of a Detox? By Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette

D

etox is an informal word we use for detoxi -

fication, representing a range of ways to rid waste and toxic substances from the body. Signs that your body might be in need of detoxification are: Digestion, Elimination Problems, Elevated Cholesterol, Overweight/Underweight, Allergies, Skin Disorders, Fatigue, Anger, Depression, Irritability, Dark Circles Under the Eyes, Blood Sugar and Hormonal Imbalances, PMS, Asthma, Frequent Flus, Colds, Sinus Infection, Muscle and Joint Pain, Fibromyalgia, Insomnia and Chemical Sensitivities. If you can identify with any of these signs listed, your impaired health may be due to inadequate clearance of toxins. Sometimes we don’t pay attention to our health until it begins to fail and often we don’t recognize the combined burden our environment, diet, lifestyle and metabolic processes place upon our bodies each and every day. Did you know that during our lifetime, we will consume between 30 and 50 tons of food? Our GI system is responsible for breaking down these foods, digesting and absorbing those components which are potentially useful, and eliminating the rest. Our liver works to remove these toxins from our food, as well as toxins produced in our bodies. Periodically, it is important to restore the body’s ability to cleanse itself and eliminate toxins.

What are toxins and where do they come from?

A toxin is defined as any substance that causes harmful effects to our body. Sometimes our toxin levels are in excess of our body’s capacity to remove them. As a result, they build up and are stored until they are removed. We are all aware of environmental toxins, but might not be as familiar with lifestyle and internal toxins. Today, we use more prescription drugs, eat more sugar and highly processed foods. We also turn to addictive substances, such as caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco to help us deal with the daily stresses of life. Not enough sleep and exercise also pay a critical role in relieving stress and eliminating harmful toxins from our bodies. Metabolic reactions, intestinal microbes, and emotional toxins are also produced within our body. These internal toxins are bacterial, yeast, fungal overgrowth, by-products of metabolic reactions, such as carbon dioxide, ammonia, hormones, undigested food, stress, unresolved trauma or abuse, and unhappy relationships. A proper detoxification program will help restore healthy digestive system function by removal of harmful toxins and enhance nutrient absorption which can help you feel better and energized. A good detoxification program should assist the liver in changing harmful fat-soluble toxins into a water-soluble form, so they can be easily eliminated from the system through the kidneys or colon.

Why should you detoxify?

It will help you feel better, unmask GI and other health problems, and maintain good health. It will restore the way your liver detoxifies and how your digestive system operates. This in turn will help your body to regain proper digestion, elimination, and absorption of nutrients needed for optimal health.

Community Gathers for Saint David Carnival, Street Naming, and Dedication By Debby Teich

M

ore than 20,000 people gathered for the four - day 35th

Semi-Annual Saint David Catholic Church Carnival, which raised funds for the school and church. It was the second year that the carnival was held without Saint David’s founder, Reverend Gabriel O’Reilly, who passed away in June 2013. Some of the carnival’s main attractions included a merry-go-round, ferris wheel and a variety of other rides for all ages. There was plenty of food, including homemade cakes pies, cookies and soups; pizza, pasta, quesadillas, hamburgers, Cuban sandwiches, Shepherd’s pie, and more. There was a fortune wheel for the adults, as well as face painting and a dunk tank for the kids. Prior to the carnival, the Town of Davie renamed SW 39 Street to Father O’Reilly Path. Town officials, Saint David representatives and parishioners, as well as many others participated in a moving sign dedication ceremony. Father O’Reilly’s brother Terry, who flew in from Ireland, spoke about his brother with endearment.

24

May 2014 | davie town times

“Now we will always be able to look at the sign that represents the man we followed as our church leader and our spiritual inspiration,” said Paulette Vitale, Human Resources. “Father O’Reilly was here when there was nothing much beyond University Drive and Masses were held in a store front. He touched the lives of thousands with his words, smile and outstretched arms. You could not help but love him as a human being. They broke the mold when they made him. We miss him very much.” Reverend Steven O’Hala blessed the new statue of the Archangel, Gabriel, in the school garden. Father Steve is the new pastor of the Saint David congregation, which consists of approximately 5,000 families. There are approximately 500 children enrolled in the school. According to Vitale, the church and school work closely together in the ministry of community. Saint David Catholic Church is located at 3900 South University Drive in Davie. Davie PAL Sponsors Three Triathlons for Kids at Bamford Park By Debby Teich

rea youth have been practicing their biking , running and

The races feature the familiar swim-bike-run format, but the distances are much shorter than in adult races. In addition, the course is well-suited for beginners. There will be awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for each age group, both male and female. Racers who sign up for each group will save $20. Many kids have been training with the South Florida Sea Dragons, a Cooper City youth triathlon club that is dedicated to promoting the multisport lifestyle for boys and girls. They participate in local and statewide youth triathlons throughout the season. There is a Youth Development Team, for kids ages 7-15, as well as an Elite Competitive Team, for youths ages 12-16. “Kids do not have to be super athletes to participate in a triathlon.” said Sea Dragons founder and coach Maria Supik. “If they can run, bike and swim, they can enter. Since there are three very different activities, they don’t get bored. These are also three Coach Maria Supik (back) has been training members of the sports that most kids do well.”

They will be held on May 25, July 6 and September 7 at Bamford Park in Davie. “The triathlons are a great way to encourage the kids to stay active and have fun,” said Officer Tim Albury, Director of Davie PAL. “They will also raise money for a great cause.” Proceeds from the triathlon will benefit the programs at Davie PAL, a youth crime prevention program that utilizes educational, athletic and recreational activities to create trust and understanding between police officers and youth in the community. Over 600 kids of all income levels are enrolled in flag football, tutoring, boxing, mentoring, Youth Leadership, and a variety of other programs and activities. The races will be broken down into four age brackets: ▸▸ 5-7 year olds – Swim (25 yds.), Bike (.5 miles), Run (.5 miles)

AMHS Students Raise Money for Schott Communities By Debby Teich

T

he C ampus M inistry Club at Archbishop E dward A. M cC arthy

High School recently organized an event to help those who are unable to help themselves. The school’s Liturgical Choir and Best Buddies Club invited residents from Schott Communities, which address the needs of persons who are deaf or disabled in South Florida, for an afternoon concert and dancing. The event raised $152 for Schott Ministries. Eight students from the Liturgical Choir, as well as some from the Spanish Choir and band collaborated on the music. They performed an assortment of old and new classics that involved the keyboard, drums, guitar, bass, and vocals. Amanda Rementeria, Best Buddies Club president, was responsible for bringing the event to the school. She has been working with people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities since she was in 8th grade. “When I see those from the Schott Center enjoying themselves and dancing, it makes all that I do worthwhile,” said Amanda. Juliet Rivero, 16, also volunteered at the event. “I believe that every single person with a disabil-

ity should have a friend,” said Juliet. “All of the buddies had so much fun at the concert.” There are currently 123 members in the Best Buddies Club, which is being offered for the first time this year. Members have participated in a variety of activities for children and adults, including a Halloween party, school sporting events, the National Best Buddies Annual Friendship Walk, and more. They also initiated an “End the ‘R’ Word” campaign at the school. Cristina Boyd, who co-moderates the Best Buddies Club with Nikoletta Huck, says the AMHS students gain many things by participating in the club. “Just interacting with people with different abilities gives our students an opportunity to see that while they may have different abilities, they have a lot in common as well,” said Boyd. “The students also see that they have the power within themselves to make someone else’s day better just by spending time with them and treating them with respect.” Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School is located at 5451 South Flamingo Road, in Southwest Ranches. For information, visit www.mccarthyhigh.org or call 954-434-8820.

Davie Students Get a Glimpse of the Sun By Debby Teich

A

lesson on the solar system recently came alive for 3 rd and 4th grade students at David Posnack Jewish Day School in Davie. During Solar Week, they had an opportunity to see the sun close up and witness the power of its UV rays. “This was the third time our school participated in Solar Week,” said Marsha Fischer, science teacher at the Lower School. “It encourages children to ask questions and explore science outside of the classroom.” Students participated in a week of online activities and curriculum, which included lessons on solar eclipses, sunspots, solar flares, solar storms, and more. The students were able to submit questions via a “message board” to solar scientists from around the world who answered them. For many, the highlight of Solar Week was a visit from a group of local scientists. The students had a chance to see the sun through a solar-equipped telescope valued at more than $15,000. The volunteers spoke to them about the sunspot activity

that they saw, showed them some interesting pictures, demonstrated beads that changed color in the sunlight, and more. Solar Week is produced by the University of California, Berkeley Space Science Lab. Since 1999, the week-long educational program has been offered in the spring and fall. It is open to all students, primarily upper elementary through middle school. “During Solar Week, the students have an opportunity to explore the Sun online and in the field, which helps to spark their imaginations,” said Jim Stryder, UC-Berkeley Solar Week volunteer, who organized the event and has been involved with Solar Week since its inception. “Many students take their first view ever of the sun, not knowing they can actually do so without hurting their eyes. It is all done using safe, professional-equipped, solar telescopes and accessories.” For information, visit www.solarweek.org.

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding.

Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first.

Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy in the back. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more…

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that!

Some Commonly Asked Questions By Evan Baron

D

uring my initial consultation with a prospec-

tive client, I try and educate them as to the basic laws in Florida dealing with a Dissolution of Marriage. After explaining some of the basics, I always inquire as to whether they have any questions. It seems that there are a number of questions which are common to most cases. I thought I would share them with you.

How long does a divorce take?

I explain that every divorce is different, so it is impossible to predict how long any individual case will take. There are also a number of factors which are out of my control. For instance, the particular Judge who is assigned the case may have a great influence on how long the proceedings will last. Each Judge controls his/her own docket and, as such, some divisions are more “backed up” than others. In some divisions it may take a couple of weeks to schedule a hearing, while in other divisions it may take a couple of months. I have handled simple uncontested dissolutions in about six weeks, while more complex cases can last a year or more. Obviously the greater the amount of issues involved, the longer it will take. Cases that settle by way of a Marital Settlement Agreement will normally conclude more quickly than a contested matter, which must be presented to a Judge. If the participants reach an Agreement, then a Final Hearing can be scheduled within two weeks.

How much will this cost me?

As previously stated, each case is different. Since most Family Law attorneys charge on an hourly basis, the time spent will obviously affect the “bottom line.” In most cases, it is impossible to predict how long a case will last and therefore impossible to advise as to the eventual cost. One must remember that in litigation the time spent is also somewhat controlled by your opposition. When an attorney files his/her “Notice of Appearance,” it requires his/her involvement in all aspects of the case. The more the parties chose to litigate, the more costly their case will be. It is really up to the client as to how much the “bottom line” will be.

I don’t want anything from my spouse. Can I agree to that? The answer is yes and no. A person can waive all of his/her rights if he/she wishes to do so. The only aspect of the case which cannot be waived is child support for any minor children. Florida law will not allow a Final Judgment to be signed without a provision for child support. The rationale is that the support belongs to the children and therefore cannot be waived by the parents. I have found that many individuals are initially prepared to “just walk away” from a long term marriage without obtaining his/her share of property accumulated. It is obviously his/her right to do so, but nobody should ever make a decision based upon emotion. The reason a person should retain an attorney is to insure that decisions that are made are rational and based upon the law. No individual should give up rights that the law has provided.

he anterior crucial ligament (ACL) is a vital

knee joint stabilizer. It helps control anterior stability in the functional knee joint. Our modern day athletes are tearing up their ACL’s at alarming rates. The most common mechanism of tearing has to do with a high energy athletic event where the knee is subjected to high torque forces that are required for our bodies to change directions or come to a stop. Also, many people are tearing their ACL’s while skiing. The most common story by patients is that something suddenly happened on the knee and they heard or felt a “pop” with immediate swelling and guarding. The physical examination demonstrates that the knee is “loose,” comes out of its normal socket, and there is swelling and guarding. The immediate treatment of this knee will consist of ice, protection and getting diagnostic studies such as X-rays and MRI scan. The X-ray is usually normal. The MRI usually confirms the tear of the ACL and excludes further damage of other structures in the knee joint like articulate cartilage, meniscus cartilage, bone contusions, bone fractures and tears in any other ligament. Most of these patients are young and athletic and most of them will require surgical intervention to fix the problem. Again, the problem is an unstable knee joint because of a tear of the ACL. You can fix the knee joint by using your own tissue (from patella tendon area or from hamstrings). In older athletes or patients who want to minimize the size of the scars and time in the operating room, you can use transplant tissue to replace the torn ACL. The surgery is outpatient and arthroscopic in nature with small wounds and takes approximately one or two hours to do.

Normal ACL

ACL Tear

Repaired ACL

The rehabilitation of the surgery consists of physical therapy with the objective to return the athlete to unrestricted sports activities in approximately six months. The success rate and achievement of this goal is very high and most patients are very happy that they had the surgery. Not everybody is a candidate for surgery and in this type of older sedentary patient a strenuous physical therapy protocol is established and with the protection of a brace most of them can return to sports. Dental Trauma By Dr. Maria Grosman

Y

ou are going about your regular business on

a Wednesday afternoon and the phone rings. It is the nurse from your child’s school informing you that he/she has fallen in the playground. It seems that there was an injury to the mouth. You are assured that your child is comfortable and the bleeding has stopped. The nurse would like to know what YOU would like to do next. This is not an uncommon situation. Studies show that one in five children will experience some form of oral trauma during the school years. First decide if the involved tooth is a primary tooth (“baby tooth”). The baby teeth are smaller, whiter in color, and those in the front of the mouth tend to fall out naturally around the ages of 6-8 years. In this situation, you do not need to do anything yourself. See your dentist as soon as possible. The most important thing to remember in this situation is NOT to put back a knocked out baby tooth. The reason is that it may cause damage to the permanent tooth developing underneath. What if a permanent tooth is knocked out? Immediately locate the tooth after impact. It should be picked up by the crown (the part of the tooth normally seen when smiling) and the root should be rinsed under running water, without touching it, for 10 seconds to remove any debris. If possible, place the tooth back into the socket and support it by biting down softly on gauze or tissue. Do not worry if the tooth does not fit properly. Having the tooth in its natural environment is the best way to keep the tissue of the tooth healthy for reattachment. If this is not possible, you can place the tooth in a cup of milk or the child’s own saliva. The two most important factors in saving the tooth are the solution of transport and the time taken till replantation. What if the permanent tooth is injured but not knocked out? See if the tooth has moved or if it is bleeding. The best prognosis is when the injured permanent tooth has not moved (even if it is slightly loose) and there is no observed bleeding (even if the tooth is fractured). In this case, you should still see your dentist within 48 hours. Just make sure that any tooth fragment is located and stored in water as it may be used in restoring the tooth later. If the injured permanent tooth has either moved in the bone or the tooth is bleeding as a result of fracture, see a dentist immediately. The tooth may require a splint or some initial root canal treatment. Again remember to recover any fragments for future restoration. Considering the importance of timing in dealing with most of the above scenarios, we cannot stress enough the importance of finding a dental home for your child at an early age. Being an established patient of a dental office will ensure quicker access to care in a familiar environment. It will also increase the likelihood of receiving “after hours” care if needed. We hope that by following some of these basic guidelines in dental trauma you will feel empowered to handle most dental emergencies. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. Mommy Makeovers: Combined procedures for rejuvenation of the breasts and abdomen.

If you’re a mom who is looking to regain your prepregnancy physique, then a Mommy Makeover may be something you want to consider.

Procedures are performed by a board certified

Typically, this combined procedure includes breast augmentation, tummy tuck as well as liposuction; however, there are other cosmetic procedures that can be combined as well. For a consultation, call 954.659.5212, or visit clevelandclinicflorida.org for more information.

plastic surgeon, in the safety of our hospital.

Mommy Makeovers: Combined cosmetic procedures Going through pregnancy and giving birth can be such a wonderful experience. However, during pregnancy a woman can gain anywhere from 10 to 30 pounds, and not to mention the potential enlargement of their breasts and overall stretching of the skin. Unfortunately for many women, their body does not look the same after giving birth. What is a Mommy Makeover? The term “Mommy Makeover” is typically used to describe a combined procedure for rejuvenation of the breasts and abdomen. The goal is to address some of the common physical changes that can occur following pregnancy. On the breast, these most commonly include sagging and deflation. On the abdomen, it is often excess skin with stretch marks and bulging. Martin Newman, MD Breast augmentation fixes the volume of the breast that has been lost due to breast feeding, along Cleveland Clinic Florida with a breast lift that can help with the shape of the breast by removing excess skin. Abdominoplasty Plastic Surgeon is to correct the skin that was been stretched and tearing of the deep skin, which is known as stretch marks. This procedure tightens up the skin while the muscular layer of the abdomen can be flattened. A large problem is localized areas of stubborn fat collections that just don’t want to leave. Liposuction can also be offered as well.

Who is a good candidate for a Mommy Makeover? Someone in overall good health who has completed her childbearing, and is looking to address several of her body concerns. Although diet and exercise can help, it will not necessarily reverse the effects of pregnancy completely. Many women begin to regain their pre-pregnancy energy levels and self-image, but that is not always enough to help get to the pre-pregnancy body they desire. Sometimes mothers need a little extra help getting their bodies back to the way it looked pre-pregnancy. Why consider combined procedures? If you are like many moms, you are probably interested in improving more than one area of your body, such as your breasts and your tummy. However, you might be worried about the time away from work and family. By combining multiple procedures like breast augmentation and a tummy tuck in one procedure, you can get the results you want with only one recovery period. Mommy Makeovers are designed to combine time off from work, time away from home duties and recovery time, into one neat package. What to expect During your initial consultation, you will discuss which options will work best for your concerns, and you will be evaluated in order to determine if plastic surgery can accomplish your goals. If you are a candidate, you will receive a surgical plan that addresses your areas of concern. Some common surgical combinations include: • • • • • •

Breast Lift and Tummy Tuck Breast Augmentation and Tummy Tuck Breast Lift and Liposuction Breast Augmentation and Liposuction Liposuction and Tummy Tuck Breast Reduction and Liposuction

Your treatment will depend on which procedures you choose, but combination surgeries are performed under general anesthesia, by a board certified plastic surgeon, in the safety of our hospital. Cleveland Clinic Florida is now offering mommy makeover packages. For a consultation, call 954.659.5212, and request a “Mommy Makeover” evaluation.

are reported nationwide. These cases can result from either deliberate abuse or merely the failure to take proper care of an animal. As Sheriff of Broward County, it is my duty to ensure that all animals in our community are protected. Whether you live in an urban or a rural community, animal abuse is a serious crime. Studies reveal a strong correlation between animal cruelty and many other crimes. If an individual is capable of harming an animal, there is a greater likelihood of other forms of abuse, from child abuse and domestic violence to battery and sexual assault. By identifying animal abuse as a likely early indicator of other serious problems in a household, we can help prevent the cycle of violence. The Broward Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit (SVU) is comprised of highly skilled, trained and experienced detectives responsible for investigating all felony abuse and neglect crimes, including crimes against animals, children and the elderly, as well as domestic violence and sex crimes. Recognizing that these crimes require special expertise and sensitivity, BSO SVU has also broadened “Animal Abuse and Animal Fighting Crimes Training” for all deputies. This training better equips law enforcement to recognize signs of animal abuse, cruelty and neglect, and provides the necessary techniques for preserving the on-scene evidence. It is our goal to increase awareness about the possible correlation between animal cruelty and subsequent future violent crimes against people. Not every call we receive concerning an animal is related to abuse. Many calls for service are for pets that are missing or in distress; however, these cases require the same resources for investigation. Often a deputy’s time is spent going door to door, conducting neighborhood canvasses in an attempt to locate the animal’s owner. Unfortunately, when the owner cannot be located, the animal may be taken to Broward Animal Care (BAC). One way the community can assist law enforcement in reuniting animals with their owners is by microchipping pets. Collars and name tags can easily fall off, but the microchip is inserted with a simple injection and is designed to stay in place. In essence, the chip provides a permanent, lifetime identification. Animal shelters, rescues, animal control, veterinarians and law enforcement routinely look for microchips to return lost pets quickly to their rightful owner. BSO’s Cooper City district office partnered with local veterinarians and initiated a pilot program to microchip pets free of charge to the residents. The Cooper City “Chip-a-Pet” Program launched earlier this year, and we are exploring expansion of the program into additional cities. For some who suffer from physical or emotional pain, a bond with an animal can be a source of relief. Therapy animals have proven to be an effective treatment method for abused children and veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. We are embracing the utilization of animal-assisted therapy into existing BSO programs to address issues such as mental illness. By working together, we can give a voice to the voiceless and help prevent animal abuse in Broward County. If you think an animal is being abused, neglected, used for baiting/fighting and/or kept in inhumane conditions, it is your responsibility to do – and say – something about it. Your involvement may be an animal’s only hope. For animal abuse or cruelty crimes in progress, call 911. To report non-emergency concerns, contact the Broward Sheriff’s Office at 954-765-4321 or your local law enforcement agency. Anonymous calls can be placed with Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477 (TIPS) or toll free at 1-866-493-8477. To stay up-todate about BSO events, crime trends and safety tips, sign up for Sheriff Israel’s e-Alerts at www.sheriff. org/e-alert or join our Facebook fan page at Broward Sheriff’s Office (official) or follow us on Twitter@ browardsheriff.

an increase in inventory, which is a welcomed relief to buyers who are competing for great homes and creating a multiple-bid situation in the hottest of neighborhoods. The housing market is extremely competitive from April through June. The most serious buyers are well aware of this and double their search efforts in early spring in order to beat the heavy competition. These buyers are ready, willing and able. As you can see below, they are also carrying cash.

Davie

There are currently 246 single-family homes listed for sale. Twenty of those listings are short sales and nine are foreclosures. The highest priced home is a 13,000 sq. ft. equestrian estate, which is listed at over $7.5 million. Compared to last year: ▸▸ Number of homes for sale is up 8.9%. ▸▸ Number of homes sold is up 20.7%. ▸▸ Average sold price per square foot is up 8.4%. ▸▸ Average listed price is down 3.1%. ▸▸ Average sold price is up 9.7%. ▸▸ “Months of inventory” is down 9.8%. Our inventory has been so low for so long that the 9.8% decrease reflects 5.9 months of inventory. This is still indicative of a Seller’s market. A balanced market is 9 to 12 months. Of the 110 closed sales for this first quarter, 54 buyers paid cash.

Cooper City

There are currently 88 single-family homes for sale. Nine of those listings are short sales and nine are foreclosures. The highest priced home is listed for $980,000 in the new subdivision of Monterra (home built in 2012). Compared to last year: ▸▸ Number of homes for sale is up 41.8%. ▸▸ Number of homes sold is down 5.9%. ▸▸ Average sold price per square foot is up 12.9%. ▸▸ Average listed price is up 12.3%. ▸▸ Average sold price is up 42.2%. ▸▸ “Months of inventory” is up 50.7%. Again, our inventory has been so low for so long that the 50.7% increase merely brings Cooper City to 4.9 months of inventory. This is still indicative of a Seller’s market. Of the 148 closed sales for this first quarter, 108 buyers paid cash.

What about the luxury market?

Of the 110 homes sold in Davie this year, five were priced over $1 million and two of those homes were purchased with cash. There are currently 62 homes in Davie priced over $1 million. If you are serious about getting the highest price, now is the time to sell. As inventories increase, prices will level. t is hard to believe that 33 percent of the

world’s population has undergone orthodontic treatment. Eighty percent of teenagers in the United States are currently receiving orthodontic treatment. The popularity of orthodontic treatment is accredited to the advances in comfort, ease, and technique of the treatment. Originally, teeth were banded with large metal bands. Some were silver and even gold. Of course these precious materials made the treatment very expensive and not very attractive. In the 1970’s, with the advent of adhesive dentistry or bonding, the metal bands were replaced by smaller brackets. These brackets held a wire that moves the teeth. The wires were changed or tighten periodically to replace forces that changed as the teeth moved.

Make the most of life with Allstate Life insurance.

In 1997, two individuals from Sanford University came up with a new idea for tooth movement. Zia Chishti noticed that the clear orthodontic retainer he wore to stabilize his teeth after finishing his orthodontic treatment would actually move his teeth. If he neglected to wear his retainer, his teeth would begin to shift. If he wore the retainer, his teeth would move back in place. Therefore, instead of tightening a wire of braces, a patient could wear a series of consecutive retainers. The idea of the Invisalign treatment was born. Generally, orthodontic evaluations are done on all children around the ages of 7-10 years old. By the time most children are 12-years-old, they have all of their permanent teeth and are able to receive orthodontic treatment. Many older patients now are seeking orthodontic treatment to correct their misaligned teeth, but don‘t want to go through traditional wires and brackets; hence the introduction of clear aligners. Initially, the doctor collects measurements from the patient. These typically include x-rays, photographs and models. With the use of 3-D computer technology, the patient and the doctor can visual the change of the patient’s teeth in progressive stages. Each stage is assigned a number and a corresponding tray. Each tray is worn for a specific amount of time, anywhere from 2-3 weeks. Each tray causes slight movement. After the last tray, a retainer is made to keep the teeth in their new position. Orthodontic treatment used to be considered “cosmetic,” but today dentists and patients alike realize that orthodontic treatment may be a necessity. Correcting misaligned teeth can often prevent a lifetime of periodontal problems, severe tooth wear, and even premature tooth loss!

Let me help explain all that life insurance can do for you. Many Americans don’t realize that some types of life insurance can provide “living” benefits as well. If you’re diagnosed with a chronic or terminal illness you may be able to receive a partial death benefit payout* to spend on long-term treatment or care. Call me today to find out how.

Broward Tutorial Services Makes the Grade By Stacey Bomser

S

ometimes even the

brightest students need help. For the past twenty years, Michael Eldeiry, owner and operator of Broward Tutorial Services, Inc., has been providing expert test preparation and tutoring for high school and middle school students. Michael answers some commonly asked questions about his company.

What services do you provide? We provide small group test prepara-

tion, private and pairs tutoring, one day workshops, and diagnostic testing to prepare students for college entrance exams, including SAT, ACT and PSAT, as well as preparation for high school entrance exams and high school subject tests.

What distinguishes you from other test prep centers?

Broward Tutorial Services is founded on the premise that all test prep and tutoring is only as good as the teacher in the room. For that reason, everything is taught by myself or Adam Moss, or by full time tutors hand-selected and trained by us. Adam and I are both former college professors who now do test prep full time. Adam has a Broward Tutorial Services Office Manager Lisa Cohen, Owner Mike BS in English from the University Eldeiry and Tutor Adam Moss. of Florida and an MS in English from Florida International University. I have a BS in Biology from Tufts University, an MA in Biology from Harvard University, and an MBA from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

What is your success rate? We work with students at all levels and our average improvement on the SAT is over 300 points and on the ACT is over 4 points.

Seventy of our students have received perfect scores and 30% of our students have scored in the 90th percentile.

Is there anything else you would like readers to know about Broward Tutorial Services? The importance of the SAT and ACT can-

not be overstated. After the high school transcript, test scores are the most important factor for admissions into college and for scholarship money. The tests are very different from school work and are constantly changing, so you need an expert to teach you about the tests and guide you through the process. Broward Tutorial Services, Inc. is located at 2883 Executive Park Drive, Suite 104, in Weston. Office hours are Monday through Thursday from 10am to 9pm and Friday through Sunday from 10am to 6pm. For more information call (954) 667-6500 or visit www. browardtutorial.com or email info@ browardtutorial.com. Follow them on Facebook at Broward-Tutorial-Services.

Silver Isles Cleaners Opens in Cooper City By Debby Teich

S

ince 2005, S ilver I sles Cleaners has been offering dry cleaning, shirt laundering and more. They deliver high quality, personalized service at each of the three locations in Miramar and Cooper City.

Jaime Z. Bendeck, President/Owner, answered some commonly asked questions about Silver Isles Cleaners.

Silvia Alfonso (front desk), Jaime Bendeck (owner) and Myriam Orozco (front desk) serve customers with the same professional service offered at the other locations.

When did you open? Silver Isles Cleaners has been open since 2005. We have two locations in Miramar. In February, we opened our newest location in the Countryside Shops in Cooper City.

What services do you offer? We provide a variety of services, such as: dry cleaning, hand-finished business shirts that are creased and pinned individually; expert alterations; expert shoe repair and polish; high end handbag/purse repair and shampoo; expert leather cleaning and repair; drapes, rug and curtain cleaning; wedding gown cleaning and boxed preservation; shoe dyeing and tinting; comforter cleaning; and more. What distinguishes you from your competition? My staff and I always strive to meet our customers’ strict demands for timeliness, quality and service. Our goal is to finish business shirts better than any other cleaners in the area by paying close attention to details, such as pinned and well-formed collars, as well as creased and pinned shirt sleeves. We never place more than four shirts in a bag and carefully inspect the clothing prior to placing it inside. We also

offer alterations, handbag cleaning and shoe repair services to complement our clothing cleaning services. How do you handle specific customer requests? Our system has the capability of storing customer information about how they want clothing cleaned, pressed or packaged. We note special requests on the account and invoices, such as “crease on all pants,” “do not use paper cover under the bag” or “check cuffs for no crease.” We want to make sure that customers are satisfied on each visit. How do you make your services convenient for customers? We notify many of our customers by email/text when their orders are ready. This creates a better customer experience, since they know in advance if their clothing is ready before attempting to pick it up. Regular customers can buy express bags, which come with a name tag. This allows them to drop their clothing knowing that it will be properly handled. We are also able to send customers their invoices by email, which saves them wait time, as well as a little paper. Do you offer coupons? We have ongoing deals on our website for those who love our service, but are price conscious. Stores are located at: Countryside Shops, 5850 S. Now open in the Countryside Shops in Cooper City. Flamingo Road, Cooper City, 954-434-6545; Shoppes at Silver Isles, 16375 Miramar Parkway, Miramar, 954499-4545; and Miramar Town Center, 2405 Main Street, Miramar, 954-241-2455. The hours of operation are: Monday-Friday, 7am–7pm, and Saturday, 8am–6pm. proud to announce the grand opening of its new location. After almost six years, the spa has moved from its original home in the Embassy Lakes Shopping Center to Countryside Shops on the corner of Stirling and Flamingo Roads. Upon entering the spa, clients immediately notice the transition from the bright outdoors to the tranquil interior, which is reminiscent of a high end luxury spa. The Cooper City location is the first Massage Envy Spa in South Florida to showcase the franchise’s new look.

Owner Rick Altman answered some commonly asked questions about Massage Envy Spa in Cooper City.

What does Massage Envy offer? Massage

Envy Spa Cooper City offers more than just the joy of relaxation. We encourage a healthy lifestyle which revolves around restoring balance and well-being to even the busiest of lives. Taking good care of yourself is paramount to helping you look after everything and everyone in your life.

Why did you open a spa? Pam became a

member of Massage Envy over eight years ago. At first, she went about once a month. She loved it so much that she began going at least 2-3 times per month. She noticed, and so did I, that regular massages helped lessen the frequency of her migraines and lowered her stress level.
