Touch-A-Truck Event Appeals to Kids of All Ages Community News

any kids dream of climbing inside some of the big trucks they pass on the road. On June 20, they will have an opportunity to see, touch, and explore their favorite big trucks and vehicles, as well as to meet some of the people who drive them at the 17th Annual City of Cooper City Touch-A-Truck event. Over 500 people are expected to attend the event, from 9am to noon, at the Cooper City Sports Complex, located on the corner of Stirling Rd. and Palm Avenue. All ages are invited and admission is free. “We invite everyone to come out and get a birds-eye view of trucks and vehicles of all shapes and sizes,” said Annie Boyle, Recreation Program Specialist for the Cooper City Recreation Department. “This hands-on event is the perfect opportunity for children to get up close to and touch all kinds of vehicles they usually only see from afar.” There will be more than 30 trucks and vehicles on display from a variety of governmental agencies and private collectors. The fire and police departments in Cooper City will bring out some of their trucks, cars and equipment. Waste Management will show kids how a dump truck crushes the trash. There will be cranes and other construction trucks, Recreation Department shuttle buses, utility pump trucks, SWAT trucks, motorcycles, and much more. Sandy Becker brought her three children, ages 4 to 8, to the event last year and plans to attend again. “They have been talking about it, since they attended last year,” said Becker. “They especially loved the fire rescue truck. I had just as much fun as they did!” Organizers are still looking for companies that want to display their vehicles. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Residents Celebrate Cooper City’s 56th Anniversary Community News

he City of Cooper City recently celebrated its anniversary at the 56th Founder’s Day Parade and Festivities. There were plenty of activities for the entire family to enjoy throughout the day. The celebration began at the Cooper City Community Center, with a pancake breakfast sponsored by the Boy Scouts, a One-Mile Family Fun Run/ Walk/Stroll and a free kiddy show. Griffin Elementary’s PTA received a $100 donation for having the most student participation. The morning activities continued with a parade that included City officials, principals and other representatives from each of the Cooper City schools,

BSO, fire department, Cooper City High School band, scout troops, sports teams, local organizations, clubs, businesses and more. There were a variety of afternoon events at Brian Piccolo Broward County Park, including a car show, Optimist All-Star baseball and softball games, community entertainment, bingo, arts and crafts, food booths, BSO Expo, Cooper City Business Expo, youth free throw contest, children’s activities and much more. In the evening, there was a concert in the park, featuring “Big City Dogs,” and a spectacular fireworks display. The weekend ended with the Annual Founder’s Day Golf Classic, hosted by the Cooper City Optimist Club.

Cooper City Mayor Strengthens His Commitment to the League of Cities Community News

reg Ross, Mayor of Cooper City, will now play an even larger role in the League of Cities. Last month, he took an oath to become the First Vice President of the Broward League of Cities. He will also represent the Broward League of Cities as its newest board member of the Florida League of Cities. Headquartered in Tallahassee, the Florida League of Cities is the official organization of the municipal governments in Florida. It is designed to serve the needs of Florida’s cities and promote local self-government. The League is governed by a Board of Directors composed of elected municipal officials. Ross will join five other Broward League of Cities members on the 13th District of the Florida League of Cities board of directors, including Davie Councilwoman Susan Starkey. Chartered in 1957, the Broward League of Cities is a non-partisan, non-profit organization representing the 31 municipal governments and more than 120 associate government, non-profit and business organizations, including 1.8 residents in Broward County. The organization is dedicated to increasing awareness and

providing resolutions to issues that affect day-to-day operations at the county, state, and federal levels. Ross became a member of the Broward League of Cities in 2012, when he was elected Mayor of Cooper City. Since then, he has been dedicated to ethics reform; lobbying in Tallahassee and Washington D.C. on behalf of the League of Cities; chairing the local Issues Committee and much more. “All 31 cities have common interests, problems and solutions,” said Mayor Ross. “It makes sense to get together to talk about everything and come out with a single voice to air our concerns and solutions. There is definitely strength in numbers.” As first vice president, Ross is poised to become president in May 2016. Although he has not revealed his “theme,” he has said that he plans to focus some of his efforts on the issue of homelessness. uch of Broward County is surrounded by canals and waterways, which are home to fish, birds, alligators and other wildlife. In celebration of Earth Day, students were recently asked to take a close look at their environment and capture the images on paper for the 9th Annual Everglades Eyes Children’s Art Competition. The winners were announced at an award’s ceremony at the Old Davie School Historical Museum. Town of Davie Hosts Animal Fashion and Open Horse Show Community News

outh Florida is well known for its “human” fashions, but this month the focus will be on the animals. On June 14, the Town of Davie, Friends of the Davie Farm Park and Project Stable Town of Davie will sponsor the 2nd Annual Pet Fashion Show and Open Horse Show at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. Gates open at 9am. There is no charge for spectators. The Animal Fashion Show begins at 10am. Area residents are invited to bring their pets and equines for a dress up day of fashion and fun. If you can dress it up, there will be a way to compete. Some of the classes include: Dogs, Cats, Farm Animals, Horses, Mini›s, Donkeys, Ponies and more. There will be three classes for each pet: Most Fashionable, Best Matched PairPet and Handler, and Most Unusual. In addition, there will also be a Best of Show winner. The cost to enter is $10 per class. Participants can enter in one class or all three. All dogs, cats and ferrets must show proof that they have a current rabies vaccination. Pets must be on a leash or in a cage and under handlers control at all times. Aggressive animals are not permitted. The Open Horse Show begins at 12noon. It will feature classes in: Halter, Showmanship, English and Western Riding, and 4-H. At 2:30pm, there will also be games and timed events. 2nd Annual Tee It Up Golf Challenge Is A Success Community News

eam sports can present many difficult situations for kids with autism. During the 2nd Annual Tee It Up Golf Challenge, 30 teens and young adults on the autism spectrum had the opportunity to play golf in a safe and secure environment. The event was sponsored by PGA golf Pro Gary Braeseke and the GB Golf Center, with support from the Autism Society of Broward County. It was held at Cooper Photo Credit: Teenography Colony Country Club in Cooper City. “It is always amazing to watch these kids play golf, especially the ones who are playing on-course for the first time,” said Jared Barclay, senior at University School of NSU, who founded and organized the tournament. Unlike most golf tournaments, there was no fee to participate, no money raised, and no experience required. It was simply a chance for participants to play golf and have fun interacting with their peers, while their parents watched with pride. Golfers could either play up to nine holes on the course or participate in the Drive and Putt Skills Challenge. Each group of players on the course was paired up with volunteer caddies that rolled their bags to each hole. There were approximately 20 volunteers, including students from Cypress Bay High School, University School and Western High School. “I am not sure who has more fun – the golfers or the volunteers,” said Barclay. “The event is rewarding for everyone involved.”

After the golfers finished, they enjoyed dinner, as well as yogurt, provided by Menchies. They also received medals for participating, and framed event photos of themselves, provided by Teenography. Barclay came up with the idea for the tournament while volunteering for Golfing Fore Autism. During the Friday night program at Cooper Colony Country Club, middle and high school students with Autism Spectrum Disorders buddy-up with student coaches to learn to play golf. PGA professional Gary Braeseke, who has been teaching golf in the South Florida area for more than 20 years, runs the Friday night program. Participants learn the physical mechanics of the golf swing, rules of golf, and golf etiquette. Some play nine holes, while others hit balls on the driving range. The teens who participate have an opportunity to build their self-confidence and social skills, as they exercise, make friends and have fun. There is no equipment or experience necessary. Barclay will be attending Claremont McKenna College in the fall. He is hoping that one of the junior golfers in the program will organize the Tee It Up Golf Challenge next year. want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy in the middle. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! Town of Davie Sponsors Independence Day Fireworks and Family Fun Day By Debby Teich

n July 4th, Davie residents can celebrate the holiday at the Town of Davie’s Independence Day Fireworks and Family Fun Day. The festivities begin at 3pm, at Pine Island Park, 3801 S. Pine Island Road, and end with a fireworks show at 9pm. Activities will take place at ball field #2, as well as all around the park. Some of them include: live music, arts and craft displays, youth entertainment, bounce houses and inflatables, hayrides, food trucks, rides, and free cake for residents (while supplies lasts). There will be a variety of sports and activities throughout the park, such as a Family Fun Run, pickle ball, inner tube water polo, volleyball, swimming and more. The fireworks begin at 9pm. Food and snacks will be available for purchase throughout the event. The local Boy and Girl Scouts will be selling snow cones, popcorn and cotton candy. No alcoholic beverages, guns, or fireworks, including sparklers, are permitted at any time during the event or inside the park. Although the Fourth of July is traditionally known as a fun holiday, it is also the one that typically has the most fires. Often, it is children and teens that are injured, since they do not know how to use fireworks safely. According to the American Red Cross, the safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public fireworks show put on by professionals, such as the one at Pine Island Park. he residents of Southwest Ranches have an opportunity to enjoy the Town’s beautiful parks and rural landscape on a daily basis. In fact, Southwest Ranches has more trees than residents. The children of Southwest Ranches were recently invited to celebrate their surrounds by participating in the Schools & Education Advisory Board’s 6th Annual Arbor Day Art Exhibition. They used their creative talent to recognize the impact that trees have on their lives through their drawings. “The Arbor Day message is catching on,” said Kathy Sullivan, Chairperson for the Southwest Ranches Schools and Education Advisory Board. “This year, the schools were ready to submit their students’ artwork prior to the Board formally issuing the invitation!” Over 50 students submitted work; most were in fourth grade. Participants attend Hawke’s Bluff Elementary, Apple Tree Montessori and several other schools. At a Town Council meeting, the students received certificates for their participation that said their artistic expression “communicated a message of hope for the

Davie Golf & Country Club Offers Summer Programs for Youth and Adults By Debby Teich

D

avie Golf & Country Club offers several ways for youth and adults to participate in golf programs this summer. The club is providing a series of Junior Golf Camps as part of the Town of Davie’s Summer Youth Golf Program. The program is funded by the net proceeds of the James B. Pirtle Memorial Golf Classic, which is held annually during the Orange Blossom Festival. The camps will be conducted by the professional staff of Greenway Golf, which manages the course for the Town of Davie. Davie’s Junior Golf Camps are open to boys and girls, age 6 to 17, who want to learn the fundamentals of the sport. No experience is necessary and clubs will be provided to children who don’t have their own set. Each camp will provide ten hours of professional instruction, plus fun and games. Lunch will also be provided for each day of camp. Camps are scheduled Monday through Thursday, from 8:30am – 11:30am, on the following dates: ▸▸ June 15th – 18th - Registration deadline is June 12th ▸▸ July 20th – 23rd - Registration deadline is July 17th ▸▸ August 10th-13th - Registration deadline is August 7th

The fee for Junior Golf Camp is $140 for first child per camp session, and $125 for each additional child in the same family. There is also an optional one-day camp fee of $38 per child. Adult golfers can play in the “Summer League Cup Series,” which features a 9-hole round at 5:45pm on Wednesdays. Although the league started in May, golfers can still join during the first two weeks of June. League members can also participate in a mid-summer, 18-hole tournament on July 18. The league season will culminate with a barbeque dinner, awards ceremony and presentation of the “Summer Series Cup” on August 26. Scoring will be on an individual player point system, and will be a based on the PGA Tour “FedEx Cup” point system, so all participating golfers have a chance at winning prizes and the Davie Golf “Summer Series Cup” regardless of handicap. Davie Golf will keep the Summer League competition interesting by playing varying formats each week, including two person best ball, two person scramble, individual stroke, two person Stableford, and two person alternate-shot. Peaceful Ridge Rescue to Host 3rd Annual Tack and Yard Sale Community News

hether you are looking for horse related items, jewelry or household goods, Peaceful Ridge Rescue’s 3rd Annual Tack and Yard Sale has it all. It will be held on June 20, from 9am to 3pm, at 2995 S.W. 121st. Avenue in Davie. The event is one of many ways that Peaceful Ridge Rescue raises money to help with its efforts to rescue horses. Located in the heart of horse country, Peaceful Ridge Rescue wants to make sure that every horse has a home. The 15-acre property has three barns, many turn-outs and a variety of amenities. It also has a staff and volunteers ready to care for forgotten or abused horses with experience, understanding, and love. It can take months of physical and mental healing to restore a horse’s health and trust. Once the horses are healthy, they are available for adoption. Since opening in 2013, Peaceful Ridge Rescue had saved over 100 horses. Each one needed some level of care for a variety of reasons. Sometimes well-meaning owners simply cannot afford to care for their horses any longer or the animals are thought of as property and simply abused. Sadly, many of the horses that fall victim to these scenarios do not survive. The non-profit organization’s mission is to rescue horses from neglect, abuse, abandonment, and slaughter; to improve their lives by providing a safe haven for healing and rehabilitation; to find a home for every horse, through a rigorous adoption process, sponsor and foster program; and to educate the

community through instructional support, and equine-assisted programs. Founder Victor Cutino says it costs approximately $50 to feed a horse for two weeks. This includes fresh hay, salt, mineral supplements, and other nutrition as needed. Each visit to the vet costs $130. Peaceful Ridge is always looking for donations, including lumbar, wheel barrows, and pitch forks. It is also always in need of plenty of volunteers to help. No experience is necessary, just a love of animals. Peaceful Ridge has orientations to teach volunteers about horse care and farm chores. any Davie/Cooper City students dream of becoming a professional dancer, artist, musician or actor/actress. Six seniors from Nova High School and Cooper City High School may be well on their way to a career in the arts, and paying for it just got a little easier. Each of them recently received a check for $1,000 from the Arts for the Future Scholarship Fund. The students from Cooper City High School and Nova High School are:

The celebration included musical, theatrical and dramatic performances by students that attend a variety of schools throughout the district. The Arts for the Future Scholarship Fund is a communitywide initiative designed to promote artistic career opportunities for graduating high school students. The scholarships directly assist students in their future educational and artistic endeavors to

attend colleges and postsecondary institutions. Every Broward County Public high and technical school is invited to select graduating seniors who are outstanding in the arts including: theatre, dance, music, visual arts and technical arts (e.g. lighting, sound, set design). Since its inception, approximately $807,000 has been distributed to over 698 students pursuing secondary education in the arts. Scholarship funding is provided by community organizations, corporations and giving individuals. Sarah Sharpe was one of the Cooper City High School students that won. In the fall, she will be attending Muhlenberg College, where she will double

major in Theatre and Film Studies and plans to pursue screenwriting. “Throughout high school, I’ve learned that the one thing I have the biggest passion for is telling stories, whether that be onstage or behind the camera,” said Sarah. “There’s something very fulfilling about knowing that you’ve affected someone and made them feel something so deeply. Whether it is as a writer or performer, I honestly can’t imagine myself anywhere else besides the entertainment industry. If being a Teen Ambassador for the past four years has taught me anything, it’s that the Arts is a very delicate field and it needs today’s youth to help sustain it for generations to come.”

Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz used it as a time to recognize someone she believes will make an impact in the future. She awarded the inaugural Make Her Mark Award to Marisa Lefton, a 12th grade student at Western High School. “The Make Her Mark Award celebrates young women in South Florida whose actions and contributions today prove that they will undoubtedly become the leaders of tomorrow,” said Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz. “Marisa selflessly gives back to the community by leading service projects with Jewish Student Connection and she works to empower other students by breaking down cliques and barriers that interfere with schools being a safe space for all. I cannot wait to see where her extraordinarily promising future takes her.” The award celebrates young women, in grades 9-12, whose activities, achievements, and personal stories demonstrate the leadership, commitment to others and community, tenacity, and perseverance that are characteristic of the great American foremothers

n April 7, the Mayor and Council met with the Town Administrator and all Department heads for our annual vision and goal setting session, which kick starts our budget preparations for the 2016 fiscal year. Two of the topics covered were our Capital Improvement Plan and upcoming road improvements. Capital Improvement Plan discussions included: Town Hall Renovations (Building B under renovation) • Fire Station 86/Shenandoah Park (design 90%; bidding) • Storm water Master Plan (preparation) • Eastside Infrastructure (finalizing design; bidding) • Westside Infrastructure (finalizing design; bidding) • New Equipment (Fire, Public Works, Utilities) and Utilities Facilities Rehab. I started the Mayor’s Scholarship Fund. I offered two scholarships of $500 each to deserving graduating seniors that plan on majoring in areas of public affairs, such as public safety, and public administration, as well as careers in law. This is open to Davie residents who attend Davie schools, and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. A letter of intent stating their area of interest, colleges to which they have applied and/or been accepted, and any experience in the field, such as police or fire explorer, JROTC, and internships was required. The application also included a letter of recommendation from someone, other than a family member, who has known him/her at least four years. The students included a resume and sent the package to Mayor Judy Paul. Members of the Youth, Education and Safety Advisory Committee reviewed the applications and made their recommendations to the Mayor. An announcement will be made shortly. Congratulations to the South Florida Cloggers. They recently returned from their Tennessee Tour, where they competed with others from around the country. They won seven medals in freestyle; 1st place over all for Boss, ages 16-18, Moving Line division; 1st place for Precision, ages 7-9; 1st place overall for Exhibition, ages 30 and over; 2nd place for Small Team, ages 7-9, Spice Girls; 3rd place for Up Town Funk, ages 10-12; and 2nd place for Circus, ages 13-15. Circus got the only standing ovation of the competition! Way to go! You help to spread the word about the wonderful Town of Davie.

O

ne of the most common anxieties parents share with us concerns the timing of the eruption of teeth. We are often asked: “When are the first teeth scheduled to enter the mouth?” or “Which is ‘better,’ late vs. early erupting teeth?” The truth of the matter is that although there are published milestones, there is still a normal variation/range that teeth may be expected to erupt. In terms of which is better, there is no real benefit for early or late eruption. However, extreme deviations may cause a practical challenge, as we will discuss. Let’s start with the primary (or “baby”) teeth. The first primary tooth to erupt is usually the lower central incisor between 5-8 months of age. The teeth will then follow the “rule of twos,” which is that two additional teeth will erupt every two months until around 2-2.5 yrs old. There are a total of 20 primary teeth equally divided between upper and lower arches. After the eruption of the lower central incisors, we will see the eruption of the upper central incisors, the lower lateral incisors (as the name suggests, next to the central incisors), followed by the upper lateral incisors. The

pattern will continue from the center laterally, with the lower erupting earlier than the upper counterparts. Premature eruption of primary teeth occurs in 1:2000. This can occur in two ways. “Natal” teeth are present at birth and “prenatal” teeth erupt in the first 30 days of life. When teeth erupt prematurely, it is important to consult with your healthcare provider (pediatrician or pediatric dentist), as strategies for feeding will need to be addressed, especially if breastfeeding is planned. There are also structures which are present at birth and resemble premature teeth, but are actually not the primary teeth. One of the most common examples of this is “Epstein pearls.” They are visible cysts located in the upper arch in the front close to where the primary teeth are expected to be positioned. There is no treatment recommended for this, as long as there is no interference with feeding and no observed discomfort for the child. As with all published milestones, it is important to acknowledge the fact that these are just averages and that “normal” has a range. We find variation in gender, with females being ahead of males. It is also important to note that deviations in one area may have no bearing on others. For example, there are many children who are either “ahead” or “behind” in dental development, but are at the opposite ends of the spectrum in skeletal growth. They do, however, give us an idea of what to plan for and some guidance on timing of interventional treatment, whether dental or orthodontic, when indicated. Drs. lients who are going through a Dissolution of Marriage are often surprised to learn how much personal financial information they must reveal. The laws of this state require complete financial disclosure. Most people get overwhelmed with this requirement, since it can be very time consuming. I’m often asked, “Do I have to produce all of this information. I just don’t have the time!” I reply that it is called Mandatory Financial Disclosure for a reason. Since Florida is a “No Fault” State, the primary area of dispute between a husband and wife is usually financial. It is obviously important to know all of the facts before negotiations begin. The following is a list of the financial information required pursuant to Florida law. All parties MUST complete a Financial Affidavit. This Affidavit lists a party’s income, expenses, assets and liabilities. It is a sworn document, signed under oath by the client, swearing to its truthfulness. A financial affidavit must be filed in all dissolution proceedings, even in the most simplified uncontested matter. In addition to the financial affidavit, certain documentation must also be exchanged between the parties within approximately six weeks from the date of filing. If it is a simplified divorce, this requirement can be waived by both parties. The Financial Affidavits must be produced however. The documents that are required include: ▸▸ Income tax returns ▸▸ Pay stubs for the past three months ▸▸ Statement of income ▸▸ Loan applications and financial statements prepared during the preceding 12 months ▸▸ Deeds, leases and promissory notes executed during the past 12 months ▸▸ Checking account statements for the past three months ▸▸ Bank statements (other than checking) for the past 12 months ▸▸ Brokerage account statements for the last 12 months ▸▸ The most recent statements showing value of retirement accounts, profit sharing or deferred compensation accounts. ▸▸ Life insurance documentation ▸▸ Credit card statements for the past three months The above list is just a partial list of what might be required. Requests often require documents dating back three years. It is not unusual that clients often become quite anxious when assigned the task of gathering this information. Here are a few words of advice: ▸▸ Do not wait for the last minute to gather these items. Time deadlines are extremely important and any delays could result in sanctions, which can include payment of attorney’s fees to opposing counsel. ▸▸ Don’t try and do everything at once. Give yourself enough time to “pace yourself.” ▸▸ Be as accurate as possible in filling out all Financial Affidavits. Please remember that it is a sworn document and your answers (if incorrect) can be used against you. ▸▸ Do not ignore items or questions you feel are not relevant. If you are not sure of something, just ask. ▸▸ If you have an attorney, don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek his/ her advise. It can make this task a lot less stressful for all concerned. BSO’S Diverse Workforce – A Reflection of Our Community ask the sheriff

S

ince taking office as sheriff of Broward County, my goal has been to broaden the diversity within our agency. I believe the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) should reflect the multicultural community we serve. I have always based decisions about assignments, transfers or promotions on the qualifications of the individual and the skills he or she brings to the job – regardless of race, sexual orientation or religious beliefs. When decisions are made based on merit, diversity happens naturally. One of the greatest challenges facing public safety agencies around the country is that many departments don’t truly reflect the diversity of the communities they serve. This problem causes a breakdown in trust, leading often – in the aftermath of tragic incidents – to unrest and other problems. Today, I am proud to say that the percentage of minorities employed in sworn positions at BSO is greater than the percentage of minorities in Broward County’s population as a whole. This diversity is reflected among all ranks in our agency, all the way to the top of our command staff. The deputies on the street protecting our community every day are also protecting their own community – they are our neighbors, our friends and our family members. This connection builds trust.

Traditionally, fire departments nationwide are among the least diverse of public safety entities. This was also true here in Broward County, which is why we are working to change it. BSO has established a partnership with the Progressive Firefighters Association to enhance minority recruitment outreach efforts. We are working with Nova Southeastern University to expand scholarship opportunities for both swimming and vocational fire rescue training. We have also established a partnership with Boyd Anderson High School to create a magnet program for recruiting and educating young people about opportunities for a fire rescue career. These efforts have slowly but steadily helped to raise the number of minority firefighters in our ranks. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue Lieutenant Keith Martin is one of our leaders in this recruitment effort. At community centers, schools and local organizations throughout the county, he talks about the rewards of a career in fire rescue. This process helps to garner interest and find candidates in a wider range of communities. Over time, these outreach efforts by BSO will lead to a more diverse fire rescue workforce. Progress is being made, but we are only just beginning. BSO’s diverse workforce is building bridges across our multicultural community in order to strengthen all of us.
