rea residents have many “egg-citing” ways to celebrate the arrival of spring. The City of Cooper City will host egg hunts for young children and teens. The Town of Davie offers an egg hunt for young children combined with a multi-ethnic festival.

On March 24, from 7pm to 9pm, the City of Cooper City will host a “Teen Twilight Egg Hunt” for Cooper City resident teens in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades at the Pool and Tennis Center. During the free funfilled event, teens will use flashlights to hunt in the dark for special hidden eggs.

Participants must bring their own baskets and flashlights. There is no charge for this event, but Cooper City teens must pre-register by March 23 in order to participate. They must show a middle school I.D. and their parent’s Cooper City driver’s license.

n March 13, runners and walkers will gather for the 35th Annual Cooper City Richardson 5K Run/Walk and One Mile Run/Walk at the Cooper City Sports Complex.

The community event honors Jim Richardson and Ken Richardson, two Cooper City residents that have contributed to the success of the race over the past three decades. Both are retired from their professional fields and reside in northern Florida with their wives. They return each year in support of the race.

The timed 5K Run/Walk begins at 8am. It starts and finishes at Cooper City Sports Complex and takes participants on a course through a residential neighborhood. The One-Mile Fitness Run/Walk starts at 8:45am and will be held inside

The annual award was established in 1990 as a memorial tribute to Harvey J. Johnson, one of South Florida’s Top Male Masters and a Cooper City resident.

International Orchid and Bromeliad Show Returns to Flamingo Gardens

xperience the beauty and diversity of orchids at the 35th International Orchid and Bromeliad Show. On March 26 and 27, from 9:30am – 4:30pm, over 30 vendors will have rare and exotic orchids and bromeliads on display and for sale at Flamingo Gardens in Davie.

“Flamingo Gardens is a wonderful setting for an Orchid Show,” said Jan Amador, president of the Flamingo Gardens Orchid Society. “It is set under the trees and surrounded by tropical plants and the sweet fragrance of orchids.

Whether you are already growing orchids or might be interested in learning about orchids this is a must attend event. Bring the whole family, because there is something there for all to enjoy.”

There will be orchids for sale by South Florida growers, orchid growing supplies, gardens accent décor, activities for children, demonstrations and lectures from orchid experts, as well as live performances by Treebo, food and more. Kids can also meet the Easter Bunny and make Easter crafts.

In the “Gallery” there will be orchids on display that have been grown by hobbyists and professionals. The Flamingo Gardens Orchid Society will be hosting a contest, which will be judged by the American Orchid Society. Show attendees will also have an opportunity to vote for the “People’s Choice Award.” They can also

purchase a $5 raffle tickets for a chance to win an orchid.

The Flamingo Gardens Orchid Society meets at Flamingo Gardens in the “Gallery” on the second Monday of each month. Formed in 1989, the Society promotes the hobby of orchid growing through education of orchid culture in the community. Meetings include an informative speaker on orchid culture, as well as an orchid raffle, orchid sales and refreshments. There are approximately 90 members, who live in the surrounding area.

Although they come from a variety of backgrounds, all of them share a love of orchids.

“We are a friendly group and are willing to share our experiences and knowledge with each other,” said Amador.

On April 11, the club will hold its biggest fundraiser at Flamingo Gardens, where they will auction off orchids purchased from local growers who have been very supportive of the Society. The preview of the plants will begin at 7pm and the Auction will start at 7:30pm.

16th Annual Relay For Life of Davie/Cooper City Helps Fight Cancer

T

his year 1.5 million people will hear the dreaded words, “You have cancer.” On April 2, thousands of people who have been touched by cancer will gather on the track at Cooper City High School for the 16th Annual Relay For Life of Davie/Cooper City. The 16-hour overnight event, for ages 3 to 93, will last all night, because cancer never sleeps.

“Cancer touches 2015 Relay For Life of Davie/Cooper City everyone, either directly or indirectly,” said Cooper City Commissioner James Curran, event chair. “WE have had enough. We need to fund the cure for this horrible disease, so OUR children and grandchildren won’t have to worry about it. All monies raised stay in our community to help those that are currently battling the disease.”

Relay For Life is the nationwide signature event of the American Cancer Society. It is NOT just a race or walk. Teams of people and individuals have fun while raising funds to fight cancer and increase awareness of cancer prevention and treatment. The event gives participants a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease.

Forty-nine teams participated in last year’s event. The top three teams were: Kiwanis Club of Cooper City ($11,526), Team Hawks Bluff - Kids for a Cure ($10,730) and Embassy Creek Elementary ($6,918). This year, organizers are hoping to have

70 teams and raise over $125,000.

Teams have already held fundraising events, including lemonade stands, garage sales, pancake breakfasts, mini golf tournaments, pizza nights, t-shirt sales and more. Anyone can volunteer, form a team, or join a team.

The overnight event will feature a variety of activities honoring and supporting those who have had cancer. Some of them include the traditional Opening Ceremony and Survivors Lap (4pm) and Luminaria Ceremony (9pm), when candles are lit in honor and memory of locals who have battled cancer. The event will also feature live entertainment, including youth bands, dancers, crossdressing pageants, and celebrity and sports personalities. Interfaith services will take place throughout the night. All of the teams are encouraged to dress up and decorate their campsites in this year’s “Got Purple?” theme.

GFWC Women’s Club Members Are Making a Difference Community News

he General Federation of Women’s Clubs is a unifying force, bringing together local women’s clubs with members dedicated to strengthening their communities and enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service.

It has 100,000 members in affiliated clubs in every state and more than a dozen countries.

The West Broward club meets at the Pine Island Community Center in Davie, on the 2nd Wednesday of every month, from 7pm to 9pm.

“The club is the best kept secret in Davie,” said Marie Ambrosino, who was one of the initial members of the West Broward club. “We are a very nice group of women who are interested in making a difference in the community. We are a very friendly group and love to have fun.”

The West Broward club was established in 1990. Through the federated community of woman’s service clubs, members can exchange ideas and build lifelong friendships with like-minded people. They can also take advantage of the resources and activities available at the club, district, state and international levels to make serving the community both rewarding and fun. Membership is open to all women in the West Broward area. Although the club is small, all 16 members are very active in the club, including the three newest members - Tina Smesler, Mary Ambrosino and Jill Cuba.

“I love the camaraderie and working with different charities,” said Cuba. “I am happy to have the opportunity to give back to our community.”

Although the club supports GFWC’s projects at the state and national level, such as domestic violence, Human Trafficking and Heifter International, most of its efforts are in the Davie area. Last year, the club gave $250 to graduating seniors

at Nova High School, Cooper City High School and Western High School. The club plans to award scholarships again this year.

They support the Wildlife Care Center in Ft. Lauderdale.

They also adopted a dolphin and manatee at the Dolphin Research Center in Marathon Key. Every year, they take a field trip to visit the dolphin and have some fun.

Eagle Scout Builds a Bench at Southwest Ranches Equestrian Park

oshua Hatch, 18, is on his way to sharing a prestigious title with notables like Neil Armstrong, Michael Bloomberg, Gerald R. Ford, Bill Gates Sr., James A. Lovell Jr. and many others. Last month, he received his Eagle rank from Troop 224 for a project he completed at Southwest Ranches Equestrian Park.

“Scouting builds boys mentally, physically, socially, and spiritually,” said Joshua. “It fosters self-esteem, a sense of value and belonging, a sense of accountability, and teamwork. The skills boys learn in scouting help them overcome obstacles and challenges with courage and character throughout their lives.”

Joshua joined the Boy Scouts of America in 2009 and has been working his way toward becoming an Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in the program. Requirements include earning at least 21 merit badges, as well as completing an extensive service project that the Scout plans, organizes, leads, and manages.

Joshua’s troop meets on Tuesdays at Southwest Ranches Equestrian Park. When he realized that visitors did not have a place to sit while watching the horses in the stadium, he knew that he had found the perfect project. He decided to build a bench

surrounded by a garden. The project took a total of three months to complete, from getting the project approved to finishing the bench. Nine Scouts helped him build and place the bench in the park.

Joshua plans to continue with Scouts to become an Assistant Scout Master.

What is your background and where did you train? I have a multi-cultural background. I was born in Israel and at the age of eight I moved to New York City, where I was raised. With both my parents from South America, I grew up speaking Spanish at home. By the age of nine, I was fluent in Hebrew, Spanish, and English. Because of my love for languages, I later studied French and am fluent in it as well. Having insight into various cultures has been a huge asset in helping me communicate on a deeper level with patients of different origins and ethnicities.

I graduated from The Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City and proceeded with my surgical training at Montefiore/Albert Einstein Medical Center. I trained in General Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and Microsurgery.

Is Anxiety Linked to Dementia?

A

recent study conducted by researchers from the University of Southern California discovered that “frantic and frazzled people,” otherwise known as people with anxiety, have a 48 percent higher risk for dementia, compared to those who do not frequently experience feelings of anxiety.

To determine whether anxiety levels correlated to demential risk, researchers compared those who reported high anxiety with those who reported lower anxiety levels. Those in the high anxiety group were about 1.5 times more likely to develop dementia. It is thought the cause of the dementia is related to the fact that those who have anxiety also have higher stress hormones to include cortisol. Chronically, high levels of cortisol are known to damage parts of the brain, such as the hippocampus, which stores memory, and the frontal cortex, which is liable for high-level thinking.

What is more appalling is that most of those coined with a diagnosis of “anxiety” are then prescribed benzodiazepines. These drugs are commonly known as Valium, Xanax, Librium, Ativan and Klonopin. Concerns about these drugs date back to the 1970’s when physician David Knott at the University of Tennessee voiced strong concerns about short term memory loss among clients with anxiety that were prescribed benzodiazepines.

Knott stated, “I am very convinced that Valium, Librium and other drugs of that class cause damage to the brain. I have seen damage to the cerebral cortex that I believe is due to the use of these drugs, and I am beginning to wonder if the damage is permanent.”

In a documentary in 2002 on the Discovery Channel, In Pills We Trust, Dr. Malcolm Lader an expert on benzodiazepines at London’s Institute of Psychiatry, explained “that patients taking markedly increased doses could get dependent. But (we) thought only addictive personalities could become dependent and that true addiction was unusual. We got that wrong. What we didn’t know, but know now, is that even people taking therapeutic doses can become dependent.”

Research continues after the initial clinical trials of these drugs and what is disturbing is that “more serious adverse effects” of these drugs have been seen long after the clinical trials – indicating brain atrophy among long-term users of benzodiazepines. Moreover, in a French study in 2007, it was noted that long-term users of benzodiazepines were 75% “markedly ill to extremely ill…often with marked severity and disability.”

This is where functional medicine offers hope to those experiencing anxiety. Rather than masking symptoms with harmful drugs, the focus is more on fixing the root of the problem. As stated earlier, there is an association with anxiety and stress hormones, especially cortisol. The focus would not only be to test cortisol levels, but to achieve overall balance. First, you would need a Doctor who specializes in Functional Medicine to determine where your imbalance lies. Through specialized testing, it might be determined that testing of cortisol, hormones, and neurotransmitters of the brain is necessary.

Red Cross Volunteers Install Smoke Alarms in Davie Mobile Home Park SECTION HEAD Community News

N

early two-thirds of all fire deaths happen in homes that have no smoke alarms or that have malfunctioning units. When there is a fire,

smoke spreads fast. Working smoke alarms give you early warning, so you can get outside quickly. Thanks to the American Red Cross-Broward Chapter, residents of a Davie mobile home park now have a better chance of surviving a fire in their homes.

The Broward Chapter has a goal to install 1,065 in Broward County before the year’s end. On Martin Luther King Day, about 50 volunteers installed nearly 200 free smoke alarms at homes in the Everglades Lakes Mobile Home Park. The volunteers, led by the Davie Fire & Rescue, randomly knocked on doors and asked to install the alarms if none existed. Part of the volunteer group included community partners - Tropical Financial Credit Union, Broward College, Miami Midnites and members of the military.

The installation is part of the organization’s Home Fire Preparedness Campaign that aims to reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by home fires by as much as 25% over the next several years. The volunteers also provided fire prevention tips, assisted in practicing fire escape plans and replaced alarm batteries.

“We are happy to get behind the Home Fire

Preparedness Campaign,” said Amy McGraw, vice president of marketing at Tropical Financial Credit Union. “Many people think of the Red Cross in times of big national disasters, but the fact is they play a big role assisting victims of home fires on a daily basis.

The fact that they are taking a proactive approach to saving lives by installing smoke alarms for free is a great thing.”

The National Fire Protection Association recommends the following smoke alarm tips to prevent fires: ▸▸ Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home. ▸▸ Interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the home. This way, when one sounds, they all do. ▸▸ Test alarms at least monthly by pushing the test button. ▸▸ Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or sooner if they don’t respond properly. ▸▸ Make sure everyone in the home knows the sound of the smoke alarm and understands what to do when they hear it.

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first.

Daniel’s Dash 5K Raises Awareness of Concussion Injuries Community News

M

any young athletes are reluctant to report symptoms of brain trauma out of fear that it will keep them on the sidelines. They often play through a concussion to avoid letting down their teammates, coaches, schools and parents. On March 12, at 7:30am, hundreds will gather at Markham Park for the 5th Annual Daniel’s Dash for Concussion Awareness 5K Run/Walk to learn more about the dangers of concussion.

The event was started by Davie resident Diana Brett in memory of her son, Daniel. In May 2011, Daniel took his own life as a result of disabilities he suffered from concussions, as well as delayed diagnosis and treatment. Diana has been sharing his story to prevent the same thing from happening again.

Daniel started playing football when he was 11. Although he was not very big, he was tough and fearless. He believed in the motto “no pain, no gain.” In August 2009, he learned he would be the starting linebacker for his high school’s JV team.

Unfortunately, it was also the last day he would play football.

He pulled himself out of practice due to a possible concussion.

“All he wanted to do was play,” said Diana. “If he had a headache, he would take Tylenol and blame it on a tight helmet. He did not understand the dire consequences of hiding or underreporting concussions just to stay in the game. There is a common misconception that concussions are only caused by big, hard hits, but smaller hits can also cause concussions.”

In March 2012, soon after Daniel passed, the School Board of Broward County adopted a Resolution mandating base2015 Daniel’s Dash line concussion testing for all high school athletes, making it easier to diagnose concussions on an individual level. In April 2012, the state adopted a bill mandating that all young athletes suspected of sustaining a concussion or head injury be removed from practice or competition immediately. They cannot return until they get written medical clearance from a health-care provider.

Diana wanted to find a way for something good to come of Daniel’s death.

She started the Daniel Brett Foundation, a 501 (3) (c) organization dedicated to raising concussion awareness and to benefiting student athletes. Some of the Foundation’s accomplishments include: ▸▸ I n 2013 and 2014, the Foundation brought the Sports Legacy Institute’s (SLI) Advanced Concussion Training - a customized multimedia presentation

developed by SLI co-Founder Chris Nowinski - to the four Florida High School Athletic Association Compliance Conferences. ▸▸ In 2015, The Daniel Brett Foundation, Inc. donated $5,000 to sponsor SLICE (SLI Community Educators) programs at South Florida High Schools. ▸▸ In 2015, SLI changed to the Concussion Legacy Foundation. The Daniel Brett Foundation will support them again in 2016 through Team Up Against Concussions (formerly known as SLICE) - a free 30 minute concussion education program for schools, community centers, and athletic programs.

Town of Davie Mourns the Loss of Davie Fire Rescue Chief and Emergency Manager

he Town of Davie is mourning the loss of Davie Fire Rescue Chief and Emergency Manager Joseph Montopoli, who passed away on February 1, at the age of 57. Chief Montopoli was well respected throughout the Town of Davie and Broward County.

“The Davie Town Council, Fire Rescue, and Town personnel are stunned at the sudden news,” said Mayor Judy Paul. “Chief Joe was dedicated to his job, family, faith, and to the residents of this community. He was loved and respected by all. We are all very saddened as we mourn a Davie family member’s passing.”

Born in New York on October 11, 1958, Chief Montopoli lived in Southwest Ranches. He is survived by his five children, Giuseppe, Maria, Gina, Christina, Francesco, and extended family.

He started his career with Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue Department in 1980 and rose to the rank of Assistant Fire Chief. In 2005, he was hired as

the Assistant Fire Chief with the Davie Fire Rescue Department and was promoted to Fire Chief/ Emergency Manager on August 6, 2007. He also served as Assistant Town Administrator from 20082011 and Acting Town Administrator in 2011.

Chief Montopoli was a 35 year veteran in the fire rescue service. He instructed at the Broward Fire Academy for many years, was a transformational leader for professionalism, and served on numerous boards and committees. The Town of Davie Fire & Police Expo, which was scheduled for February 6, was canceled out of respect for Montopoli.

Deputy Fire Rescue Chief Michael Malvasio was appointed as Acting Fire Rescue Chief.

“Chief Malvasio possesses the credentials and skills to lead during this difficult time and is surrounded by a talented leadership team,” said Town Administrator Richard J. Lemack.

Cutting Colon Cancer Out of the Family Tree About five of every 100 people with colon or rectal cancer have the disease because of a gene Giovanna DaSilva, MD passed down through their family. Researchers at Cleveland Clinic Florida are investing in specialists and resources to identify these families at risk, with the goal of preventing inherited colorectal cancer from ever developing at all.

The focus is on familial adenomatous polyposis, or FAP. “Familial” means inherited, or passed down through families.

Adenomas are specific types of polyps that can become cancer.

People with FAP have a 100 percent chance to get colorectal

cancer, and parents with FAP have a 50/50 chance of passing it down to their children.

“We want to get the word out about our program, so we can let as many people as possible know if they’re at risk, educate others in their family and offer each one the latest medical care, education and support,”says Giovanna DaSilva, MD, a Cleveland Clinic Florida colorectal surgeon and researcher.

The centerpiece of the program is the Jagelman Registry, a database of patient information of families with FAP. Using this data, physicians at Cleveland Clinic Florida work with teams elsewhere to research the condition and share the latest medicines and other treatments. Besides colon polyps, FAP can also cause growths or

cancer in the stomach, pancreas, bone and other areas. The earliest preventive care ranges from medicines that stop the growth of polyps to simple colonoscopies to remove those that have not yet become cancer.

“Using the registry, we’re able to let patients know what screenings they should have and how often. That can save their lives and those of their family members,” Dr. DaSilva says. “We’re definitely very proud of our program, and we’re looking forward to helping more and more patients through it.”

NSU University School Students Develop Kar Kit

ell phones are one of the most dangerous and tempting distractions to teen drivers – often leading to deadly situations. In fact, the risk of a crash is four times higher when a driver uses a cell phone, whether or not it’s hands-free. A group of students at NSU University School has developed a Kar Kit to help reduce the problem of texting and driving, especially among teen drivers. The kit also contains a variety of personal and safety essentials that every driver should have in their car. It was conceived and executed by teens for teens.

The entrepreneurs are part of the school’s Junior Achievement (JA) Fellows “company.” JA is a nonprofit youth organization that works with businesses, schools and organizations to deliver experiential programs on the topics of financial literacy, work

Each Kar Kit sells for $20 and comes in a small pouch that includes: a window breaker/ seatbelt cutter, first aid kit, tire gauge, hand wipes, tissues, deodorant, flashlight, stain remover, breath freshener and a rain poncho.

It also has a “No Texting and Driving” pledge card that provides important statistics on the dangers of texting and driving. Customers are encouraged to sign the pledge card (and have their family members sign it as well) and send it into the student-run company to post on the company website’s list of “safe drivers.”

“The pledge card is the most essential item in our Kar Kit,” said junior Alex Shuster, who is vice president of marketing for the club. “There are 1.6 million cell phone-involved car accidents per year. This clearly shows that there is a problem that needs to be solved. Through the pledge card, we hope to end texting and driving.”

The kit rolled out in December and the students are hoping to sell over 400 kits by the end of this month. The majority of the buyers have been family members of new drivers, especially parents of new teen drivers. To send a clear message about their commitment to curtail texting and driving, the team made a pledge of their own. They are donating 10% of their profits to End Distracted Driving, an organization whose mission is to educate the public about the

dangers of texting and driving.

Head of School at NSU University School William Kopas, who is a parent of teens, was one of the Kar Kit’s first customers. “I am incredibly proud of and impressed by the JA students that developed the Kar Kit,” said Kopas. “It’s a great product and a great message, especially for new drivers.”

Broward College Partners with 2016 MLK Day of Service

r. Martin Luther King, Jr. fought for freedom and equality, as well as dignity of all races and peoples. On January 18, Martin Luther King Day, Broward College gave back to the community by partnering with the 2016 MLK Day of Service Advisory Board to support volunteer projects honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy for a national day of service.

With funding from the Florida Legislature, Broward College and the MLK Day of Service Advisory Board awarded $190,986 to 42 community organizations hosting volunteer projects in Broward County on MLK Day. A total of 873 volunteers registered for a project through the Broward College MLK Day of Service - including 719 community volunteers, 93 Broward College students, and 61 Broward College faculty/staff.

The awards were given to various community groups to develop service projects that positively impacted the local area and addressed education, health, clean energy and environmental stewardship, economic opportunity, basic needs, disaster preparedness, veterans and military families’ issues, public safety or neighborhood projects. Some of the participating organizations included Urban League of Broward County, Dillard High, Rebuilding Together Broward, Broward College’s Office of Student Life and Habitat for Humanity of Broward.

This was a substantial increase over last year, when the Broward College MLK Day of Service Awards granted 24 awards to 20 organizations, totaling $96,406.

“Broward College is thrilled to increase the much-

needed support for these MLK Day of Service projects, nearly doubling the award amount to support community organizations and their proposals,” said Broward College President J. David Armstrong, Jr. “One of our priorities is to encourage volunteerism and service within the community year round, and these notable volunteer projects offer the opportunity for sustained service and ongoing community involvement.”

Armstrong participated in several volunteer initiatives at various locations throughout Broward County. Some of them included: packing homeless survival kits with Broward College students, planting health gardens with students from Urban League of Broward County, revitalizing community buildings with Broward College, organizing food drives to assist veterans and more.

AMHS 4th Annual Walk for the Animals Breaks Records

tudents in the Friends of the Animals Club at Archbishop McCarthy High School (AMHS) are always looking for ways to raise funds and awareness about the importance of animal adoption. The Annual Walk for the Animals is the club’s largest fundraiser and this year it broke all records.

Over 300 people came to walk for the animals. They donated pet food, supplies and toys, as well as over $2,500 to benefit the Humane Society of Broward County, Milo’s Dog Rescue and the Wild Life Care Center. Versus last year, this represented an increase of 200 people in attendance and $1,100 in funds raised.

“Our Club members have a deep love for animals and met several times to brainstorm new ways to raise funds,” said Cristin Calder, Science Department Chair/AP Biology Instructor and Moderator for the Friends of the Animals Club at AMHS. “The students are so happy to see how extra effort on their part paid big dividends for the animals.”

This year, they sold Walk for the Animals shirts and solicited donations prior to the walk. To raise additional funds at the event, they included a bake sale and

sold water, hot chocolate, and coffee. Also new this year was the participation of local animal shelters. Milo’s Dog Rescue brought adoptable animals, which the volunteers walked throughout the morning. The Humane Society of Broward County brought games and informational pamphlets.

Throughout the walk, the dogs enjoyed fresh bowls of water, dog biscuits, colored poop bags and more. Participants walked to upbeat music by DjA2, whose entertainment was donated by Party King, which included the song, “Who Let the Dogs Out?” “Maverick,” AMHS’s mascot, and “Digger,” Humane Society’s mascot, had a great time posing for photos, and helped drive home the message about pet adoption.

Davie Students Continue Efforts to Help Fight Childhood Cancer

hroughout the year, the I Care I Cure (ICIC) Childhood Cancer Foundation raises awareness and funds for research for targeted and gentler cures for childhood cancer. Last month, runners and walkers of all ages gathered for the 9th Annual I Care I Cure…I Run 5K & Family Fun Day and Mile Run of Color Fun to raise awareness and funds for the Davie-based foundation. NSU University School students attended the event again this year with a team of over 60 participants.

“We support this walk to raise awareness of the ever increasing number of children in need of the funds for further cancer research, so that one day we might find a cure,” said Jaimee Glazer, team captain for this year’s race and the ICIC Club sponsor for the middle school. “This year, each participant walked in memory or on behalf of someone who is either currently battling cancer or has lost their life to the

debilitating disease.”

The ICIC Club was formed after one of the school’s students, Ian Besner, passed away in 2006 from complications related to treatments for leukemia. It includes students from lower, middle, and upper school. This year, NSU University School has raised over $3,000 for the Foundation.

Senior Rachel Bomser participated in the race for the first time. “I strongly support I Care I Cure’s mission to find gentler treatment for childhood cancer,” said Bomser. “This was my first year participating. The event was a lot of fun and it was extremely organized.”

Approximately 1,500 runners and volunteers attended the event to make a difference in the lives of children with cancer. They participated in the timed 5K and Mile Run of Color Fun, as well as the Student and Team Challenge, which was new this year. The

Challenge attracted companies throughout South Florida, as well as many Broward schools, to form teams and earn points during the month of January by hosting Jean’s Days, attending I Care I Cure Night at a Florida Panther’s Game, and other friend-raiser activities. The teams came together at the event for some fun competition, including an egg and spoon race, jump rope and hula hoop contests, and an inflated rolling log race.

The event is ICIC’s largest fundraiser. This year, it raised over $150,000, which will be used to help support local and national research childhood cancer research. Since its inception, ICIC has funded more than $1.3 million in research projects both locally and throughout the United States.

It is important that you see the many great things our deputies do right day in and day out, but the few times we make mistakes and do things wrong, we must also be accountable. There is no better way of seeing what actually happened than a visual record of an incident. The public and law enforcement officers have a right to see and hear what goes on in the street when we do our jobs.

On my orders, BSO has already begun the process of implementing body cameras for our uniformed road patrol deputies. The use of this technology will protect good deputies from false accusations, build evidence to increase conviction rates for the criminals we arrest and help protect the public from the isolated instances of officer misconduct. Recording the interactions between our deputies and community members will help improve officer safety, strengthen trust and transparency and better document incidents and crimes.

Our community wants body cameras. I want body cameras. And body cameras are here at BSO. The results from law enforcement agencies around the country that use body cameras are encouraging. These agencies saw a drop in use-of-force incidents. The best example is the Oakland Police Department in California, which has 800 body cameras in use – the most of any U.S. police force as of this writing. Since the deployment of body cameras, the department has seen a sharp decline in attacks on officers and officer-involved shootings. At the same time, arrests in Oakland have stayed consistent with past numbers, dismissing a belief that the body cameras cause law enforcement officers to hesitate when they see something wrong occurring. Other departments with body cameras have posted similar positive results.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office currently has nearly 100 body cameras in use where they can be most effective. We are currently equipping road patrol deputies, who have the most interaction with the public. We are already in the process of widening this safety campaign to acquire more body cameras. It is my intention for all uniformed deputies agencywide to wear them while on duty.

There will be only two kinds of law enforcement agencies in the future: those that start using body cameras reactively because something terrible happened and those that use them because they proactively realize the great benefit of the devices. We are proactive. Hesitation to use body cameras could only serve to erode the solid trust we have built within our community.

I believe body cameras are a win-win for our hard working deputies and for all residents of Broward County.

One Mission - Three Alternatives The Secret to Saving Homes in South Florida

I

t is unfortunate that so many South Florida homeowners have surrendered their home to lenders, or have allowed their property to be sold at a foreclosure sale instead of pursuing all available alternatives in order to preserve their home. The secret to saving homes in South Florida is working with a law firm that (1) can aggressively defend a foreclosure proceeding, (2) that has an in-house loss mitigation department to effectively process a loan modification application, and (3) that has proven bankruptcy experience.

Foreclosure Defense. To aggressively defend a foreclosure case in South Florida, the attorney you hire must be experienced in the litigation process, the rules of evidence, and must have a clear understanding of the local court rules that alter when and how cases are heard by our local judges.

Extensive trial experience is a must, since any given foreclosure action can end up going to trial, and may require presentation of evidence and examination of witnesses.

Loan Modification.

Some homeowners believe that a foreclosure defense and a loan modification application are mutually exclusive. large number of homes sell during the spring. Here are three good reasons to get your home on the market now.

More listings are coming to market. Homes that are listed in the spring will represent increased competition to any seller. According to The National Association of Realtors (NAR), more sellers listed their homes in 2015 during the months of April, May and June.

The average list price increased 21% and sold prices increased 9.2%. Both cities experienced 3.6 months of inventory (in December 2015).

Buyers renting after the “Bubble” are making a comeback. According to TransUnion’s latest study, 1.5 million homeowners who were negatively impacted by the housing crisis could re-enter the housing market in the next three years.

During the mortgage bubble in 2006, nationally, 43% of credit-active consumers in the U.S. had a mortgage, more than 8% of these consumers were impacted, and 5 million consumers will be eligible for a mortgage in the next four years.

Here are the numbers of consumers who will meet mortgage guidelines over the next four years: 2016 – 300,000 | 2017 – 500,000 | 2018 – 400,000 | 2019 – 300,000 Interest rates are slated to rise. According to NAR, mortgage rates continue to fall, with the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage now averaging well below 4 percent.

“The yield on the 10-year Treasury stabilized around 2 percent this week, and the 30-year mortgage rate dipped 2 basis points to 3.79 percent,” stated Sean Becketti, Freddie Mac’s chief economist. “The recent market turmoil has given the Fed pause.”

As was universally expected, the Fed stood pat this week, but kept its options open for a rate increase in March. A hesitant Fed, sub-4-percent mortgage rates, at least for a little while longer, and strong housing fundamentals should generate a three percent increase in home sales this year.

With interest rates below 4%, buyers may be getting off the fence to act now to purchase a new home. However, interest rates are slated to rise during 2016 as follows: 1Q – 4.10% | 2Q – 4.25% | 3Q – 4.45% | 4Q – 4.63% With the exception of Fannie Mae, the experts agree that interest rates will increase by three-quarters of a percentage point. Even a small increase in interest rates affects buying power.

I spoke with an individual who had been to see me for a free consultation some time ago. He had a few questions, which he was hoping I could answer for him. In our conversation, he indicated that the reason he had not yet decided to file for divorce is because he was waiting for the “right time.” I explained that in my experience there probably is never a “right time,” but rather a person should want to avoid the wrong time.

A person’s initial consultation with my office is free. This often means that an individual may be considering a dissolution, but he/she is not ready to truly begin the process. That “first step,” that decision to actually begin a court proceeding, is sometimes the most difficult of all decisions to be made. It means that the thought of obtaining a divorce is slowly becoming a reality. Some people who come to see me have already decided that they are ready to move forward. Perhaps they have been interviewing other attorneys and are now somewhat familiar with the process.

Perhaps they have attempted to mediate the case, but have been unsuccessful. They may have already had their decision made for them by their spouse, who has filed for a dissolution already.

The majority of the people I see are generally not ready to take that first step at the initial consultation. I truly understand a person’s hesitancy to jump right into the situation. At the consultation, I provide them with a great deal of information, which usually takes some time to digest. I never encourage an individual to begin the process unless they are sure there is truly no other solution. Some people think about it for days. Some people think about it for weeks or months. Some people think about it for years. I was recently contacted by two individuals - one who met with me a year ago and one almost two years ago. Each needed to wait until they found that elusive “right time.”

There is usually no harm in waiting, other than the reality that a person may continue to live in an unhappy situation. Of course, waiting can at times result in a changing financial situation in the household. It could also result in a spouse moving or hiding assets in anticipation of the divorce as well. It could affect an alimony award, as additional years of marriage can often determine the eligibility and/or the duration of the support. The only situation in which I will never recommend waiting is if domestic violence exists in the household. That situation must be addressed immediately.

Everyone who is moving forward with a divorce has their own individual “right time” to begin. I just tell people that when that time arrives, they will probably know it.

ike the answer to most medical questions, the answer is not so straightforward. There are many factors which go into the decision making process. These factors include maturity/anxiety of the child, type of sedation available and financial resources available to the family. In our experience, the consideration of each of these variables is of upmost importance in consistently making the right decision for the pediatric dental patient.

The first step in the process is to gather all of the available information. This is accomplished by performing a complete assessment of the patient.

The information gathered includes the obvious dental needs, diet, home care, age, emotional maturity, and dental anxiety.

Most decisions regarding the treatment plan can be made at this stage.

For example, a two year old who suffers from carious lesions (cavities) on all primary (baby) teeth would likely require a more comprehensive sedation in order to complete the entire dental treatment in a non-traumatic manner. A child at this age does not have the cognitive and emotional ability to complete the treatment without potential long-term negative effects. In other words, without the right approach this child may become an adult with a long-term phobia of dentistry. On the other hand, a 16 year old who has been consistent with regular checkups and has already had dental treatment in the past would unlikely require sedation. Most other scenarios fall somewhere in between.

Once the needs are established, the type of sedation would be considered.

Types of sedation range from simple anxiolysis with nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) administered in the dental office setting to general anesthesia done in a hospital setting. This is where the experience and intuition of the pediatric dentist is of most importance. Ideally, we would like to use the medication facilitating the completion of the treatment with the least sedative effect. Next month’s editorial will review the various types of dental sedations in more detail.

It is at this point, that the parent/guardian must be informed and educated as to the process. For example, inhalation agents like nitrous oxide (laughing gas) completely exit the body prior to the end of a procedure. Other medications, depending on their route of administration, exit the body more slowly and prior arrangements should be made for an adult to sit with the child on the drive back home from the dental visit.

Lastly, financials should be considered when making final decisions.

Insurance breakdowns provided by the major insurance carriers are usually very specific as to what will be covered in most situations. However, if there is any ambiguity an estimation of benefits (“EOB”) may be requested from the insurance company prior to the start of treatment. Finances may also direct treatment. For example, in a situation where there is a lot of dental work to be completed, doing so under a “deeper sedation” may seem more expensive because of the higher cost of administration. However, if there is a large amount of dental work needed, doing so under a “lighter” form of sedation may result in the need for multiple visits, which might cost more in both time and money.

Our advice is to focus on prevention. The sooner healthy habits are established, the less likely extensive treatment will be needed. Additionally, early exposure to the dental office (when dental work is not yet needed) decreases anxiety levels once dental treatment is necessary. There are also many benefits to the development of a relationship. The child is more comfortable and is more easily read by the doctor. Difficult conversations between parent and doctor are easily handled once there is trust.

It seems simple, but cleaning your hands regularly can get rid of the germs you pick up from other people, or even everyday objects that you touch.

Germs can enter the body through the eyes, nose and mouth – all areas that we often touch without even realizing it. You are also at risk of picking up or spreading germs if you eat or prepare food without washing your hands. The CDC notes that germs can multiply under certain conditions in some foods – meaning more people are at risk of getting sick. Germs can even get on objects that you regularly touch: hand rails, door knobs, countertops, etc.

To gain the maximum protection from hand hygiene, the CDC recommends washing your hands at the following times using either soap and water or a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol: • Before, during and after preparing food • Before eating food • Before and after caring for someone who is sick • Before and after treating a cut or wound • After using the toilet • After blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing • After touching an animal, animal feed or animal waste • After handling pet food or pet treats • After touching garbage How you wash your hands is just as important as the act itself. When using soap and water: • Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.

• Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers and under your nails.

• Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Tip from the CDC: Humming the “Happy Birthday” song twice, from beginning to end, while scrubbing.

• Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.

• Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.

When using a hand sanitizer: • Apply the product to the palm of one hand. Make sure to check the label for the correct amount.

• Rub your hands together.

• Rub the product over all surfaces of your hands and fingers until your hands are dry.

• The CDC states that hand sanitizers are not as effective as soap and water when hands are visibly dirty or greasy.

“Colby” Colby is a 7-yearold Shih tzu. His favorite person is his brother, who takes him on long walks around the neighborhood.

His favorite toy is a stuffed doggy in pajamas that he sleeps with every night. He likes to have his belly rubbed and eat doggy treats. He dislikes thunder storms, loud fireworks, and soap in his eyes during bath time. His favorite thing to do is to play fetch with his toy animals.

Beautification I Do

Cooper City couples celebrated the Valentine’s Day holiday by renewing their vows during the “Say I Do…Again” ceremony at the Cooper City Community Center.

During the 2016 MLK Day of Service, Broward College President J. David Armstrong, Jr. joined volunteers at Dillard’s Beautification Project, which included a school-wide cleanup, revitalization of the school’s flowerbeds, landscaping, and paint touch-ups.
