How Broward College Helped Jean Saintgeorges Achieve the Education of his Dreams
When Broward College student Jean Saintgeorges was awarded the 2023 Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship, he received hundreds of messages of congratulations. Friends, faculty, and family were proud of his achievement: a scholarship worth up to $55,000 per year for use toward tuition, living expenses, books, and required fees to complete his bachelor’s degree. But while many were impressed, few were surprised.
After all, to everyone who knew him, Jean was already the kind of high-achieving
individual who had the ability to impact lives and change the world around him. At Broward College, he arrived with a desire to make a difference — in his own life and in the lives of others. Broward College simply showed him the way.
Where do we go from here?
Jean is passionate about math, business, and accounting. He hopes to take his academic excellence and community service passions to a university where he can earn a bachelor’s degree in
Accounting and a master’s in Business Administration. He aspires to be a certified public accountant and work in the private sector before owning his own accounting firm.
No matter which university he decides to attend, he is confident he will be able to navigate life’s uncertainties
and overcome any obstacle that stands in his way. Broward College helped him prove he’s capable of anything.

This Independence Day We Remember Our Heroes
As Independence Day approaches, we want to give a “shout out” to the 2.2 million men and women serving in the United States military. While we don’t see them often, it is reassuring to know that these brave people are across the globe serving their country.
It is a little-known fact that our Navy, Army, and Marine Corps are older than the country itself. The Continental Congress formed all three service branches after hostilities began against England in 1775. In fact, the very first military unit of the United States was essentially a bunch of farmers.
The “shot heard round the world” at the Battle of Lexington and Concord occurred 15 months before the Second Continental Congress signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The battle was fought by local militia members known as Minutemen. They were mostly farmers, tradesmen, and ordinary citizens who took up arms to defend their rights and resist British forces. They were also the beginning of what would become the most powerful force in human history.
The minutemen were quite the rag-tag group. Each man (they were all men then) brought his own musket, clothing, and gear. They elected their Captain, John Parker, who famously said, “Stand your ground. Don’t fire unless fired upon, but if they mean to have a war, let it begin here.”
The minutemen have few similarities to today’s high-tech and highly disciplined armed forces. Today’s forces, however, do hold the same values of selflessness, honor, loyalty, duty, patriotism, and courage that those few hundred men from Massachusetts held 247 years ago.
With the war in Ukraine, violence in the Balkans, and increasing tensions with China, today’s service members are asked to deal with complex situations in distant lands. About 173,000 people are serving abroad, and about 50,000 Marines and Sailors are at sea. When you grab a cold one this July 4th, raise your glass to the minutemen and today’s Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen, Coast Guardsman, and Guardians.
Happy Independence Day!

SUN CREDIT UNION
Helping Hollywood Residents Achieve Financial Goals Since 1946
SUN Credit Union is the only Hollywood-based financial institution. The not-for-profit credit union was founded in 1946 with a simple idea: put their members’ needs first. SUN Credit Union has changed significantly over the years, but it has always put its members’ best interests at heart.
SUN Credit Union is a financial institution that is owned by its members, not shareholders. Traditionally, they offer loans with lower interest rates, and provide higher rates on savings, with fewer and lower fees than banks.
Large Bank Services with Home-Town Atmosphere
“We offer fixed, low-interest rates on revolving personal loans and lines of credit in, what is elsewhere, a rising, variable-rate environment,” said President & CEO Patrick Mason, “Those looking to manage their budget and increase their
in-pocket savings would do well to talk to us.”
SUN Credit Union offers a wide range of consumer loan products, including vehicle financing, credit cards, Home Equity Lines of Credit, and first mortgages. Familiarity with their members (SUN’s management staff has an average tenure of over 17 years) is what makes going to the credit union feel more like visiting with an old friend than making a financial transaction.
Safe, Insured Deposits
The safety of funds in banks and credit unions has been top-of-mind for consumers recently. SUN Credit
Union is considered a financially “Well Capitalized” institution by the National Credit Union Administration. Deposits up to $250,000 are federally insured. Interest rates have increased quite a bit in the past months. A wise consumer should look at their billing statements and the interest rates that they are paying on loans, and be open to switching to another financial institution. Often, a South Florida resident deposits funds in a financial institution that is siphoning funds from the local community. SUN Credit Union has been local going on 77 years. They keep your money working here, in the local community.
▸ SUN Credit Union has two convenient locations at 4205 Hollywood Blvd in Hollywood and 701 Promenade Drive in Pembroke Pines. To open an account, apply for a loan, or learn more visit suncu.org or call 954-967-4441 to schedule an appointment with one of their friendly staff members.
For the Love of Mangos THE
2023 MANGO FESTIVAL WELCOMES ALL
Ahh, the luscious, juicy Mango — the undisputed star of Florida’s summer fruit bounty.
And one of the loves, like travel and parties, of Clarence “Hamm” and Vera Hammerstein, the generous donors of the house where the Hollywood Historical Society lives at 1520 Polk Street. Hamm and Vera were, in fact, early investors in and supporters of Flamingo Gardens, one of the first botanical gardens and tourist attractions in South Florida.
This summer, the Hollywood Historical Society pays homage to the couple and the fruit with an exhibit, For the Love of Mangos, highlighting both the fruit itself and the couple’s fascination with it.
The free exhibition, For the Love of Mangos, is scheduled to run through the end of August. Visitors are invited to tour the presentation and the historic Hammerstein House, on the first Sunday of each month from 1:00 to 4:00 pm, or by appointment.
For the Love of Mangos explores the rela-
tionship between Clarence and Vera's life and this much-loved South Florida summertime fruit. The show features mango fun facts; a look at the story of Hamm’s original cultivars and his promotion of mango growing in the community; the story of Flamingo Groves;
recipes for historic mango dishes, and how the Hammersteins’ world travels impacted their love of Florida’s favorite fruit.
The Hollywood Historical Society offers self-led walking tours of historic buildings all over town — download a printable copy of a map at the Hollywood Historical Society website, or pick one up at 1520 Polk Street (please phone 954-923-5590 for hours). Your donations are appreciated and allow us to continue to offer these and other community benefits.
▸ To learn more about the Hollywood Historical Society, a nonprofit 501(c)(3)* cultural organization founded and operated by volunteers, or to join us, email HollywoodFLHistory@att.net, or visit www.hollywoodhistoricalsociety.org.
The Hollywood Historical Society has over 20,000 items in its collection, and also offers many unique items, including books, historic postcards, photographs, maps, and posters, for sale at the Research Center at its headquarters at Hammerstein House. Please call 954-923-5590 for hours.
Club of Hollywood Announces 2023 Scholarship Awards
By James Roberts, KIWANIS Club of HollywoodAt a luncheon held at the Jaycee Hall of Hollywood, Mr. Saied Taie, Chairman of the Mary and Ken Rhodes KIWANIS Scholarship Committee, recently announced the recipients of the 2023 awards. The event was sponsored by the Community Service Foundation of Broward County, Robert Giacin, Trustee and KIWANIS member.
This year, the KIWANIS club of Hollywood granted a total of $59,000 in scholarships to 29 graduating seniors from seven high schools in Hollywood. Every graduating student from a high school in the city of Hollywood is eligible to apply for the scholarship before the specified submission deadline, which is communicated in advance to all the high schools in the city each year. The applications are then reviewed by the Mary and Ken Rhodes Kiwanis Scholarship Committee. The next step in the process involves an in-person interview. However, this year, due to lingering concerns from
students and educators following COVID, interviews were still met with hesitation. Consequently, all 29 students who applied before the submission deadline will receive $2,000 checks upon providing proof of college registration in September.
To solve the Sudoku puzzle, each row, column and box must contain the numbers 1 to 9.
and one community at a time. We welcome anyone interested in learning more about KIWANIS to join us.
▸ KIWANIS Club of Hollywood, 5837
In his address to the students, parents, and school educators, Mr. Taie remarked, "Every member of the KIWANIS Club of Hollywood eagerly anticipates this day each year. It serves as a wonderful reminder of the excitement that comes with completing high school and embarking on a fulfilling future. We hope that these scholarships will support you in your journey."
For those interested, the Kiwanis Club of Hollywood holds its meetings at noon on the first and third Tuesday of each month at Piccadilly Restaurant, located at 4500 Hollywood Blvd. KIWANIS is a global organization of volunteers committed to making a positive impact on the world, one child
Roundabouts Getting Much Needed Attention
Anyone concerned with the appearance of Hollywood in general, and the Lakes area, in particular, will see our roundabouts sorely need attention. The HLCA has been concerned about them for quite some time. Thanks to an agreement with the new Director of Public Works, Joseph Kroll, members and residents will be working with the Department to “rehab” them over the next few months.
As you can see, the roundabouts need paint, they need signs (repaired or replaced) and they need PLANTS! Native plants to be specific.
Thankfully, our civic association and Alex Bruno, a director, will be donating the muchneeded plants. HLCA members will be getting them in the ground and helping to water/ maintain them until they are well established.
We were hoping to salvage the bromeliads on 13th / Tyler and supplement the pups with grasses, however, the 1000-year flooding changed our plans. At both Harrison and Tyler Streets, the Alexander palms will remain, and we will now be planting the Florida native, locustberry (Byrsonima lucinda.)
This project will largely encourage increased use of locustberry to help the highly endan
gered Florida duskywing butterfly, as it’s the only larval plant for this butterfly. The project is modeled on the successful program to save the Atala butterfly with the plantings of coontie in many locations.
On the roundabouts on Johnson Street, the inner tiles will be removed. Slash Pine surrounded by (dwarf) Firebush, as well as, Firecracker plants will be planted. Once these native plants are established, they are drought tolerant and need minimal maintenance. As Clive Taylor, a former director and historian of all things Hollywood, has noted, Slash Pine once dotted the landscape of South Florida and Hollywood. These Pines grew in the dry, sandy, nutrient-poor soil with no irrigation, fertilizers or pesticides and were also known as Dade County Pine. They were a prized building material because of their resistance to termites as well as being extremely hard and dense. Early images of Hollywood, before being developed, show these pines dominating the landscape. We will be returning to our native trees while protecting the environment from both pesticides and fertilizers.
Some of you have already volunteered (THANK YOU) and we welcome anyone who wants to pitch in. When we have a more
definitive timeline/plans coordinated with Public Works, I will send an email alert. Our general idea is for (somewhat, cooler!) morning plantings with the rainy season helping to bolster our watering efforts.
▸ If you want to help, my email is Siobhan7715@aol.com or phone (954) 920-7715 and Alex’s is (954) 673-7739. His email is Alexbrunoteam@outlook.com.

Home Renovations in South Florida THAT MAXIMIZE YOUR SELLING PRICE
By Rose Sklar, The Sklar Teamhen it comes to selling your home in South Florida, strategic renovations can significantly enhance its value and attract potential buyers. With the region's unique architectural styles, climate considerations, and buyer preferences, knowing which renovations to prioritize is crucial. Let's explore a few home renovations that can help maximize your selling price in South Florida.
Kitchen Remodeling:
The kitchen is often considered the heart of a home, and a well-designed and updated kitchen can make a significant impact on potential buyers. In South Florida, where outdoor living and entertaining are popular, consider an open-concept design that seamlessly integrates the kitchen with the dining and living areas. Updating countertops, cabinets, and appliances with sleek and modern options can enhance both the functionality and aesthetic appeal of the space, making it more attractive to buyers.
WOutdoor Living Spaces:
South Florida's pleasant climate makes outdoor living spaces highly desirable for homeowners. Invest in creating inviting outdoor areas such as a patio, deck, or screened-in porch that seamlessly blend with the indoor living spaces. Consider adding features like an outdoor kitchen, a pool, or a landscaped garden to enhance the appeal. These additions not only create a relaxing oasis but also add value to your home and increase its overall marketability.
Energy-Efficient Upgrades:
With South Florida's hot and humid climate, energy efficiency is a key consideration for homeowners. Upgrading your home with these features can be an attractive selling point. Install energy-efficient windows and doors to improve insulation and reduce cooling costs. Consider replacing old appliances with energy-star-rated models, which not only save energy but also appeal to environmentally conscious buyers. Adding solar panels to the roof can also significantly increase your home's value, as it demonstrates a commitment to
sustainability and offers potential savings on electricity bills.
Bathroom Updates:
Bathrooms are another crucial area of focus for home renovations that can maximize your selling price. Consider updating fixtures, faucets, and lighting to give the space a fresh and modern feel. Opt for neutral colors and timeless designs that appeal to a wide range of buyers. Upgrading the bathroom's functionality, such as adding dual sinks, a spa-like shower, or a luxurious bathtub, can also increase its appeal and overall value.
When it comes to selling your home in South Florida, strategic renovations can be a game-changer. Best strategy: Keep the focus on the kitchen, outdoor living spaces, energy-efficient upgrades, and bathroom updates that can make your home more appealing to potential buyers. Remember to choose renovations that align with the region's climate, architectural style, and buyer preferences to maximize your selling price and attract a broader pool of interested buyers.
Is It Time to Replace Your Roo F ? MAYBE NOT
One of the defining characteristics of South Florida neighborhoods is the sea of terracotta roofs that cover so many homes. The Spanish-style roofs are a popular choice for builders and homeowners alike because of their beauty, long life, and relatively low maintenance requirements. They are also, unfortunately, a source of anxiety. This anxiety is driven by the state of Florida’s home insurance market.
The expected useful life of a tile roof is about 30 years. After that period of time, the effects of the hot sun and years of storms tend to degrade the grout holding the tiles together, causing cracked tiles and leaks. Replacing a roof can cost as much as 10% of the value of a home.
Florida Home Owners Insurance
South Florida is particularly susceptible to hurricane damage. It is also an area that has had particularly high roof-related insurance claims over the past decade. Many people within the insurance industry blame many of these claims on fraud or unnecessary replacements.
Since early 2022, many insurance companies and the re-insurance companies
who back their policies have announced they are either scaling back their business or discontinuing coverage in Florida entirely. An increasing number of Florida insurers have also fallen into insolvency.
The result has been a sharp escalation in insurance policy rates for many Florida homeowners and uncertainty over the future solvency of more of the state’s providers. There is also a new focus on the age and condition of a roof, with most insurance companies requiring at least five years of roof life.
“Anything over 20 years tile is becoming an issue,” said M&L Insurance owner David Vaandering, “with some carriers, as long as they can prove the roof has five years life expectancy, you should be ok, but again it depends on the insurer.”
Home Value Impact
Homeowners planning on selling in the next few years should think carefully about if and when to replace a roof.
“A new roof definitely adds value to a home,” said Keyes Real Estate Agent Mariem Garcia, “Buyers are more inclined to make an offer on a newer roof.”
She added that if an existing roof still has life, home sellers may be better off investing their money elsewhere, “As long as it (the roof) has at least four to five years left of life, and if it’s insurable, then you’re good. If the roof has reached its life limit, then you may have to replace it unless you find a cash buyer who doesn’t mind the old roof.”
To Replace or Not
Deciding to replace a roof proactively is a decision every homeowner must consider at some point. Perhaps the most important, sometimes overlooked criterion to consider is your roof’s condition. Roofs that are structurally sound, not leaking, and fully intact are likely good to go, regardless of age. Most reputable roofing companies offer roof inspections to evaluate your roof. If your home has a roof that is more than 20 years old, it is advisable to contact your insurance agent to ensure you don’t have any upcoming issues.
In short, if your roof has five years of life expectancy and is insurable, there are likely other places to invest your money than buying a new roof.

In today's world, where environmental concerns are paramount, making ecofriendly choices is crucial. One area where we can make a significant impact is in our homes. By incorporating sustainable home improvements, we not only reduce our carbon footprint but also create a healthier living space for ourselves and future generations. In this article, we will explore some inspiring ideas for transforming your home into an eco-friendly haven.
Energy-Efficient Appliances
One of the easiest ways to reduce energy consumption is by upgrading to energy-efficient appliances. Look for products with an ENERGY STAR label, which indicates that they meet strict energy efficiency standards. Efficient refrigerators, washing machines, and dishwashers can save both electricity and water, reducing utility bills and environmental impact.
Solar Panels
Harnessing the sun's power is an excellent long-term investment for sustainable living. Solar panels can generate clean, renewable energy for your home, reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Depending on your location, you may even be eligible for government incentives or tax credits to help offset installation costs. With technological advancements, solar panels have become
more affordable and efficient, making them an attractive option for homeowners.
Green Insulation
Enhancing your home's insulation is not only a cost-effective measure but also an eco-friendly one. Proper insulation reduces heat transfer, keeping your home cooler. Consider using natural and sustainable materials like cellulose insulation, made from recycled paper, or sheep's wool insulation, which is both renewable and biodegradable. These alternatives provide excellent thermal performance while minimizing environmental impact.
Water-Saving Fixtures
Conserving water is essential for sustainable living. Upgrading to water-saving fixtures such as low-flow toilets, aerated faucets, and showerheads can significantly reduce water usage without sacrificing comfort or functionality. These fixtures use innovative designs to maintain water pressure while consuming less water, making them an eco-friendly choice for every home.
Sustainable Landscaping
Extend your eco-conscious efforts beyond the four walls of your home by embracing sustainable landscaping practices. Plant native species that require less water and maintenance, reducing the need for
chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Implement rainwater harvesting techniques to collect and utilize rainwater for irrigation purposes. Additionally, consider creating a composting system to recycle kitchen scraps and yard waste, enriching the soil naturally.
Smart Home Technology
Integrating smart home technology can enhance both convenience and sustainability. Install programmable thermostats that adjust temperature settings based on occupancy, reducing energy waste. Smart lighting systems can automatically turn off lights in unoccupied rooms, further conserving electricity. These innovations allow homeowners to monitor and control their energy usage, optimizing efficiency and reducing environmental impact.
Incorporating eco-friendly home improvements not only benefits the environment but also enhances your quality of life. By implementing energy-efficient appliances, solar panels, green insulation, water-saving fixtures, sustainable landscaping, and smart home technology, you can create a truly eco-friendly haven. These sustainable choices will not only reduce your carbon footprint but also save money on utility bills in the long run. Let's take responsibility for our homes and contribute to building a greener future for generations to come.
Earth Tones & Texture are the BIGGEST TRENDS IN HOME DECOR
By Valentina ValderramaUpdating your home is one of the best ways to improve your quality of life. With so many choices, it is helpful to learn what the latest trends are before pursuing a home improvement project. We sat down with Valentina Valderrama, Architect and designer at Weston Floors and Remodeling to learn more.
What is important when making home decor design decisions?
Home decor doesn’t undergo change as fast as other things because it’s very expensive to switch home design from season to season. Therefore, the pieces that make up the harmony in interior design need to be timeless and well-preserved. So, the key is always to find interior solutions to renovating and elevating spaces that will last years and still be relevant.
Great point! What is popular right now?
Earth tones have been dictating color schemes, textures, and lighting in the past years and are still popular today. Earth-tone materials possess calming effects that are associated with nature, which are often preferred for aesthetic purposes in homes, pushing away anything that involves the color gray, shiny fixtures, and overly graphic printing of materials.
Brutalist style is something that is still very popular this year and will be in the year to come; the use of concrete-like materials and the choice of raw textures, materials, and colors are present in all aspects of design. This style won’t disappear soon since it incorporates natural elements such as wood, stone, and plants that go into a more calm
aesthetic than other styles. It sounds like people love tex ture in their home decor.
Yes! Textured materials are another big trend this year. From varied flooring materials like porcelain, ceramic, wood, and floating floors to textured cabinetry and accent fixtures, the texturizing of home elements brings depth and dimension to any space. Gold and bronze accents have been replaced. Homeowners are now opting for more matte silver and black fixtures that contrast better against earthy tones and texturization of materials.

HOLLYWOOD UPDATE
By Mayor Josh LevyBig thanks to our Hollywood Police Department for quickly identifying and arresting all five of the South Broward area teenagers who were involved in the shooting that injured nine people on Memorial Day at Hollywood Beach.
Our deepest gratitude also goes to the community for assisting law enforcement and showing that we stand united in not tolerating such behavior in our cities and public spaces.
The collaborative response that we saw following this incident, from the public, law enforcement, good Samaritans, paramedics and medical professionals highlights the power of unity when we stand united against crime and come to the aid of those in need.
Moving forward, let us continue to support one another, remain vigilant against any form of criminal activity, and foster a culture of care and responsibility.
While our law enforcement agencies diligently work to address and prevent all forms of violence, it is essential to understand that targeted incidents such as this often arise from specific conflicts and underlying issues, which further emphasize the significance of early intervention and community support in preventing, identifying and resolving such disputes.
Remember the "See Something, Say Something" principle in maintaining the safety of our community. If you see something suspicious or know something, say something.
It is crucial that we instill in our youth the understanding that if they witness or hear about any situation that may pose harm to someone, their responsibility is to confide in a trusted adult, whether it be a teacher, a parent, police or any reliable person. Keeping our community safe requires the active participation of each and every one of us, and by empowering our youth with this knowledge, we are fostering a culture of care and vigilance.
Our city leadership is steadfast in its commitment to providing highly capable police and rescue services in Hollywood. We spare no expense investing in public safety, funding the highest levels of personnel possible and equipping them with advanced technologies such as CCTV surveillance cameras and other tools which aid in crime prevention, detection, and investigation. Leveraging these resources creates a safer environment for everyone in our community, and all of the above, increased personnel and additional technology, are part of a set of proactive measures that our Police Department has committed to, to ensure a safe and pleasurable beach and city for all our residents and visitors.
Let us continue to build upon the strong foundation of trust and unity that we have cultivated in Hollywood. Together, we can create a future where criminals will know to avoid our city and where the well-being of our residents is a shared value that we all care for and protect.
Thank you for being an integral part of our community and for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Josh Levy Mayor of Hollywood
