Imagination Is More Important Than Ever

I

n a 1929 interview with The Saturday Evening Post, Albert Einstein famously quipped, “I am enough of the artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge.

Knowledge is limited.

Imagination encircles the world.”

It is worth noting that someone universally regarded for his scientific knowledge and intelligence had a higher regard for his own imagination than knowledge. Parents in modern America should heed these words today, more than ever.

State school rankings, the proliferation of standardized tests, competition to attend selective universities, and peer pressure have combined to create a cauldron of stress for students today. Academic achievement and high scores on SATs, AP tests, and state assessments are often priorities for parents. While high achievement is important, developing and encouraging a child’s creativity and imagination are likely even more vital to their future success.

Robert Closner, a representative of the Firefighters and Police Officers Pension Funds spoke in favor of the financial benefits of the proposal stating, “the maintenance of the public safety services in the future will cost more than the projected revenue…

We support the project because of the impact it will have on the stability of the public finance.”

One of two commissions to vote against the project, Vice Mayor Caryl Shuham said “This is a domino effect in the wrong direction… To put this building there, it signals to those speculators that Hollywood is getting ready to fold.”

The existing community center and beach will remain open until the development is set to begin.

Learning A Second Language The Secret Weapon in Child Development

earning a second language is the gateway to future success and overall brain development in children. Multiple studies have identified over a ten-point IQ increase in children who speak a second language as well as better assessment results in future academic tests. The job market is increasingly more attractive with graduate students who hold a second language; as well as the globalization and economic impact within the world, children who speak a second language are better applicants for universities and job offers worldwide.

Second language classes begin at the age of one years old in Sunshine State Academy.

Children learn Spanish, Mandarin-Chinese or Russian as part of the DUAL-LANGUAGE Sunshine Program. English is taught as the primary language by certified teachers who hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s in Education.

ince the pandemic, children have been deprived of valuable opportunities to socialize safely and, as a result, have become increasingly isolated.

With COVID-19 restrictions easing, children can now go to camp this summer to enjoy socialization, various activities, and stressfree fun that they've missed!

Camp is an opportunity for children to branch out, meet new people, try new things, and detach from reality for the summer. Between day camps, sports camps, science camps, dance camps, art camps, drama camps, and sleepaway camps, there is bound to be an option that is most suitable for your child.

DAY CAMPS, SPORTS CAMPS & SLEEPAWAY CAMPS

The multitude of camps available provide children and teens with opportunities to try new things and maybe even discover a new passion or develop an existing one even further. Camp encourages kids to live a healthy lifestyle by making new activities fun and by providing new experiences.

For example, some day camps include an overnight in which your child will have the opportunity to bond with other campers longer than a traditional day. They may be able to hike and sleep in the woods for the night or just stay over and watch movies like a giant slumber party. Science camps challenge their campers to create robots and learn coding. Two Invaluable Putting Tips

P

utting using a name or line on your ball can really help in setting you on the correct path line. The key is to use your dominant eye so you will not struggle in correctly lining up your ball.

First, to determine your dominant eye, hold both hands out in front of you clasped together and create a small hole to look at the flag. Close one eye at a time to determine which eye is still able to see the flag. The eye that you see the flag with is your dominant eye and you will want to use that eye in lining up your ball.

If you are left eye dominant you will want to aim your ball line with your left hand. If right eye dominant, use your right hand to aim your ball line at the target. Use the same hand to increase the odds of getting the ball directly in line between your dominant eye and the target. You should now find it much easier to aim the ball directly at the target.

Once your ball is all lined up, go set up to the ball and make sure the clubface alignment matches the balls. Now you are ready to stoke it at your target. Trust your aim, begin focusing on your speed and you will become a better putter. If you are having difficulty matching your putter to the line (so it feels like you are aiming at your target), you may want to change your set-up until they match.

Check to see if your eye is directly over the ball. Think about why this is so important. When you line up to putt you want to see the direct line from the ball to the intended target. In this case, it’s the hole that you are putting the ball into. Set up to putt with your normal putting stance over the ball and place a ball under your eye. Now you want to release that ball to see if it lands directly on top of the ball that you are using to putt into the hole. If the ball lands before it, you are standing too far away. If the ball lands past the ball to the right, you are standing too close. Keep trying this test to make sure your eye is directly over it with the ball always landing directly on top of it. You will be surprised how you need to make the proper adjustment to get the eye directly over the ball and see the right line that you are stroking the putter head on the same path your eyes see it.

Fellow Hollywood Residents, So many great things happening in Hollywood, it’s hard to narrow it down to fit into this month’s message! We are fresh off another one of the City’s signature events, the wildly popular St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival in downtown Hollywood. The ArtsPark at Young Circle has been activated and audiences have been enjoying one high-profile event after another.

Musical performances have included Dumpstaphunk, and Third World, and the Maestro Marley Cup included a soccer tournament and live concert. This month I am looking forward to the Brazilian Carnaval, Salsa Festival, and concert by Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn. I encourage all to visit Hollywood and enjoy what our beautiful City has to offer. For those who have chosen Hollywood as their destination to enjoy Spring Break, I welcome you and join with the Hollywood Police Department, Hollywood Fire Rescue and Beach Safety, and the Community Redevelopment Agency in asking our visitors to enjoy responsibly.

The City recently announced that Hollywood has been awarded $1.7 million in federal funding to implement the Hollywood Police Department’s (HPD) Body Worn Camera (BWC) program. Co-sponsored by Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Shultz and Congresswoman Frederica Wilson as part of the 2022 Community Project Funding Appropriation Requests, this award will enable Hollywood to procure 250 body worn cameras and associated infrastructure and equipment. The funding is part of the $1.5 trillion omnibus spending bill recently signed by President Biden.

Because of the efforts of Congresswoman Wasserman Shultz and Wilson, and the City’s federal lobbyist, the City of Hollywood will now be able to implement a BWC program that will enhance transparency and trust between police officers and the public. Having this additional form of evidence will help resolve cases in a timelier manner, build the public’s confidence in the police force and serve as training opportunities to improve policing.

The City has been awarded over $16.2 million in matching grant funding for three environmental resilience projects in the City to help address the impacts of sea level rise, tidal flooding and storm surge. As part of the $404 million Resilient Florida Grant Program spearheaded by Governor Ron DeSantis, Hollywood will combine the award with existing funding from the City to enhance and harden its public infrastructure in an effort to protect inland and coastal neighborhoods. In Hollywood, grant funding of $16,263,650 will be directed to three high-priority projects: • Tidal Flooding Mitigation and Sea Walls • A1A Pump Station Project • Swale Restoration Pilot Project To learn more about these projects, please visit the City’s website at www.HollwyoodFL.org And finally, Cycle 1 funding for the Mobility Advancement Program (MAP), funded by the Broward County voter-approved transportation surtax, has been approved and Hollywood’s project total approximately $11.7 million. Projects range from replacing designated sections sidewalks to resurfacing select roadways.
