outh Florida is a great place to live. This idea is something that most people reading this magazine already believe. It is, however, something that many people from other parts of the country are just now discovering.

Financial firm Goldman Sachs is the latest major New York employer rumored to be moving one of its largest divisions here. According to multiple sources, almost 1,000 people move to Florida each day, with about half of them coming to South Florida. Our combination of natural resources, a less expensive lifestyle, and no income tax has served as a magnet for people and employers from around the county. This trend has only accelerated during the pandemic.

We are excited. Our new neighbors will bring new perspectives, more financial resources, and add to our collective culture. They will also help us more quickly pull out of the financial and public health crises we are facing. When Swearing in Hollywood is a Good Thing…

ednesday, November 18th marked a historic swearing-in ceremony for the City of Hollywood, and its esteemed Mayor and Commissioners. Mayor Josh Levy and District 6 Commissioner Linda Sherwood were re-elected and two new Commissioners representing District 2, Commissioner Linda Hill Anderson and representing District 4, Adam Gruber took the Oath of Office.

Back in 1998, the City’s Charter was revised to create six Commission districts with one of the stated goals being to achieve greater diversity on the City Commission and assure that all residents felt represented. While the City of Hollywood has had Commission members and a Mayor of Hispanic descent, they graciously welcomed the City’s first African American Commissioner with the Swearing-In of Linda Hill Anderson.

Commissioner Anderson, a fourth-gen-

eration Hollywood resident and graduate of Hollywood Hills High School and Sheridan Technical School, has been working to ensure that the concerns of Black Americans in the City are heard now and for many years to come.

The proud mother of two and grandmother of four will continue doing so through her work on the City’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day planning committees, service on the African American Advisory Council, and assistance with the City’s Black History month celebrations. Additionally, her focus will be on environmental issues facing the City, improving neighborhood visibility, and enhancing educational opportunities for children and residents.

Commissioner Adam Gruber has always been an active member in the community

since moving to Hollywood in 1978 from Montreal. His focus for the City will be on improving the quality of life, increasing property values, and implementing traffic calming strategies on major roads throughout the City.

This Hollywood Resident is All Ears

G

iving back is nothing new for Katie Lizana. The third-generation watchmaker is co-owner of Circa Tempus, LLC, a company that produces watches for individuals with special needs.

Although it is her paying career choice, she loves that her unique watches help those who have impairments and life challenges.

But always wanting to do more, the Hollywood resident is passionate about volunteering. Not only is she the president of the local Kiwanis Club, the selfless mother of four takes part in coastal clean-up efforts and organizes and participates in multiple area fundraisers.

And if all of this is not enough, during the early stages of the global pandemic she heard that so many on the frontlines were experiencing discomfort when wearing surgical masks to protect themselves and others that she wanted to create a product that would help them.

“When the pandemic first started, I was reading about nurses and doctors with raw and sometimes bleeding ears and red faces from wearing masks for so long or doubling up on them and causing them so much pain,” explained Lizana. “Like so many others, I felt helpless. I knew there had to be something I could do.”

With help from her product-testing neighbor, who happened to be a nurse, she developed an ear-saving product prototype

out of torn strips of bed sheets stitched with buttons on each end.

“When I gave it to my neighbor, she said it worked! I knew I was on to something,” exclaimed Lizana.

Immediately, the eager watchmaker turned seamstress spent much time and money figuring out how to create these “ear savers” and distribute them in a timely and cost-effective manner. Finally, strong ribbon and buttons were used to form a soft strap that could attach to the face covering which she proudly named “Ear Savers”. She gave a few to her neighbor and started posting about them on Instagram.

In no time at all, doctors, trauma nurses, and other medical professionals started reaching out about getting ear savers for their teams. Lizana received messages from all over the country. If the first responders were local, she would leave a bag of ear savers somewhere close for them to pick up. From local schools, a fence at the YMCA, and grocery stores to the parking garage at Memorial Hospital and the valet at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, she has left thousands for anyone who wants them.

“Most people did not want them just for themselves, they wanted them for everyone in their unit. I even got a few custom requests for specific ribbon colors,” stated Lizana. “A couple of people insisted on paying, and I just could not take the money. I was at home feeling helpless. These people are going to work every day putting their lives on the line. I had the luxury to switch my watchmaking company to a home-based business, and even though it was a tough transition, I felt very lucky and this has made me feel useful,” added Lizana.

Each cost approximately seventy-five cents and take about four minutes to sew by hand and two minutes on a sewing machine.

The philanthropic ear saver has never accepted any monetary compensation for the products. She stopped counting, but she estimates that she has made thousands of ear savers and sent them to almost one hundred different hospitals nationwide. She is also teaching other organizations how to make them so they, too, can spread the love.

enough for what they do on a daily basis,” said Lizana. “When I send out a batch of ear savers and get pictures back from an entire ward at a hospital, it makes me happy and makes me feel like I am doing a small part.

People are always searching for the path to true happiness in life, and time and time again, I have found the only thing that really makes people happy is doing something for someone else.”

Lizana was nominated by two peers, including one who doesn’t even know her but received her ear savers, for the “CGI Heroes: Celebrating Strength” contest.

Committed to the community, Hialeahbased CGI Windows & Doors, part of the PGT Innovations family of brands, launched the contest to recognize four other area residents who have gone above and beyond to help others with a $2,000 cash prize. Katie is the second winner.

he United States’ first museum dedicated to Caribbean life, culture and history just opened its doors at the Westfield Mall in Plantation. Island SPACE Caribbean Museum​is a museum, exhibition, and event facility in Plantation, Florida featuring a collection of artifacts, iconic paraphernalia, cultural relics, and historical data representing South Florida’s Caribbean communities.

urrently, everyone knows that COVID-19 has been detrimental globally and locally for so many individuals, businesses, industries, and nonprofit organizations. Fundraising in 2020 has been quite the challenge since social gatherings and events had to come to an abrupt halt. However, sometimes a crisis can bring creativity within philanthropic communities.

More than 500 supporters of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation recently gathered online for a celebrity wine tasting event that raised $350,000

to underwrite the cost of programs, equipment, and facilities at the Hollywoodbased hospital.

“Our supporters and sponsors really came together to make this event a huge success,” said Kevin Janser, senior vice president and chief development officer for Memorial Healthcare System. “The pandemic didn’t change the mission of the children’s hospital or the resources they need to fulfill it, so we’re thankful to continue to underwrite life-changing impact in our community.”

The event was produced in conjunction with Media Stage, a Sunrise-based livestreaming video and webcam production company.

Hosted by the Diamond Angels and sponsored by UKG – Ultimate Kronos Group, the event featured a Hawaiian-themed luau, a sommelier, multiple celebrities, and a virtual good time

as they enjoyed their selection of wines and cheeseboards.

Patients diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer have few treatment options. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation or IRE for short has changed that for many patients who are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.”

Grab & Go - Broward Schools Feed Families During Break

amilies throughout Broward County let “someone else do the cooking” over the Holiday Break thanks to Food and Nutrition Services at Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) The school system offered free Grab-and-Go meals

to any family with children, regardless of where they attend school. The extra meals were distributed to families with kids under 18 years of age on December 15 through December 17th.

Children and their parents were allowed to pick up multiple meals by walking or driving through the car or bus loop at multiple schools across the county. The program was put in place to help offset the costs of feeding families during the holidays for those most impacted by the pandemic.

BCPS began food distribution in March, 2020 and has not wavered. With most students still learning from home, meals have been distributed through the drive-up/ walk-up system to any needy child or family.

BCPS anticipates continuing with meal distribution through the end of the school year at a minimum.

Most of us were forced to stop working and with that followed, no more soccer games, no more dance classes, no more group activities indoor or outdoors.

Direct Financial Assistance Update

ince the City launched a financial assistance program for families impacted by COVID-19, in October, 863 residents have been served with $1,095,991.12 in Federal CARES Act funding distributed. An additional $465,000 has been distributed to 105 households using State CARES funding as part of the SHIP rental assistance program. The remaining State allocation is expected to be expended by the program deadline. More than 250 persons have been helped with rental, mortgage and utility assistance. One Hollywood resident who took part in the program says “I was in a state where I didn’t know how I was going to pay my rent and I was at high risk for eviction with nowhere else to go. I can’t thank the City enough for the help that allowed me to stay in my apartment.” Another resident mentioned their partner is expecting and is currently bed ridden. Before the pandemic they were actively employed in the hotel industry, but due to the negative impact of COVID-19 they unfortunately lost their positions. The financial assistance program has allowed the couple the stability they needed as they work to get back on their feet.

Two Resources for Sustainable Business Two new tools from Debris Free Oceans are available in the Sustainability section of the City website, www.HollywoodFL. org, to help businesses support the expanded ban on single-use plastics and polystyrene, which applies to City-owned property and City vendors. The Reusables Calculator estimates the cost savings and environmental benefits that businesses will obtain by using reusable instead of disposable products. Savings estimates can be calculated for a variety of disposable products, including straws, cutlery, cups, plates, and bowls. The Responsible Products Catalog is an easily searchable database that provides sustainable alternatives to single-use plastic and polystyrene disposable products. Most of these items are backyard/cold- compostable and will break down in the environment. All products in this catalog are from southeast Florida businesses to support the local economy and reduce our carbon footprint. Anyone can apply to be part of the guide. Visit the Waste Reduction page under Sustainability on the City website to use these tools and for a link to be added to the guide.

GO Bond Projects in Progress Hollywood Beach Golf Course: Selection committee met on December 1st for the Oral Presentations for the selection of the Architectural/Engineering Consulting firm. The top three firms selected presented based on criteria’s set by the city.

New Police Headquarters: The consultant has moved on to the next design aspect of the Block and Stack and presented to the stakeholders 3 options. The Block and Stack Concept designs will focus on how the buildings and garage are laid out and the locations of departments within the buildings.
