Always Grateful – Local Gym Gives Away Turkeys

nce again, Flaco’s Community Gym proves its name is just that…community. Jose “Flaco” Perez never turns down an opportunity to give to others, especially during the holiday season when others are not so fortunate. This year “Breezy’s Butterball Bash” was the first annual Thanksgiving turkey drive at the neighborhood athletic center.

The idea came about during last year’s annual back to school event, “Thai’s Backpack Giveaway”.

Flaco’s good friend Josh Torv, executive of Gryndhouse Productions expressed his desire to give away turkeys, but it was challenging to put together on short notice.

So, this year when Torv said, “It’s time!”, Flaco got busy organizing the event. Luckily, he has plenty of enthusiastic philanthropic individuals such as himself on speed dial.

Torv and GryndHouse graphic artist Klean Soze got

one hundred turkeys and Flaco took care of the rest.

With the support of regular sponsors and community within the gym, the event planning moved full speed ahead. Flaco’s Community Gym members donated an abundance of side dishes to pass out with the turkeys.

Eddie Aguilar, Principal of Oakridge Elementary and good friend of Flaco’s, asked for some assistance in promoting the event to the kids and families of the local school. Michelle Powell D.O. with Powell Health Solutions was more than happy to contribute, covering the cost of the DJ. Guembito’s Party Rental Service donated a bounce house and a snow cone machine. The face painter Ashley Daniels, an artist and member of the gym, was more than happy to help by adding her services pro-bono. Mercedes Electric, sponsor of “Thai’s Backpack Giveaway”, became a huge asset when last-minute expenses occurred, and

they had no hesitation to save the day.

“The event is meant to bring some happiness, love, and support for people during the Thanksgiving season which can be stressful to families that are struggling. Our main focus for promoting the event was for families in Hollywood.

However, everybody and anybody was welcome to take a free turkey and side dishes to go along with them,” expressed Perez.

After the event, Flaco and Torv were brainstorming on what to do next. Thoughts such as a food truck driving around feeding the homeless during the holiday season were just one of them.

“Who knows what we will do? What I do know is ten years ago we were just two kids running the streets and now were championing charity events simply because it’s the right thing to do,” added Perez.

orean Immigrant Goes from Living in Poverty to Building Family-Focused Martial Arts Academy In Aventura & Sunny Isles Beach Master Sang Koo Kang runs a martial arts academy that provides a stable, family friendly environment where students can excel. However, its two locations, in Aventura and Sunny Isles Beach, are a long way from its founder’s origins in Korea.

Korean Immigrant Achieves the American Dream Sang Koo Kang was born in Seoul, Korea in 1966. Like many Korean children at the time, Sang’s early childhood was hard and his only escape from the harsh realities of life was his introduction, at the age of 5, to Tae Kwon Do. He later emigrated to the United States. Much of his early life and teens were spent living in poverty, yet he continued his Tae Kwon Do training. Eventually,

he became a champion as well as a stand-out football player.

The work ethic he developed while training in Martial Arts led him to Florida State University in Tallahassee. While at Florida State, Sang “walked on” to the football team, earning a spot and playing all four years.

In 1990 Sang opened his first martial arts school in Miami Beach.

He later added locations in Miami Gardens and Pembroke Pines; soon Sang had ten locations throughout South Florida. The poor kid from Korea became a multi-sport athletic star, college graduate and successful business owner.

The Puck Stops at Driftwood Middle School

t wasn’t a typical Thursday for Driftwood Middle School students.

Besides reading, writing, and arithmetic, these Cardinals had the opportunity to hang out with Florida Panthers mascots Stanley C. Panther and Viktor E. Rat and participate in a floorball clinic. The South Florida hockey team and Jet Blue held a pep rally as part of the airline’s platform for social impact and corporate responsibility in the “Everfi Future Goals” program.

Making the World a Better Place One Drawing at a Time

ollywood Academy of Arts & Science student Elizabeth Kohler won first place in the “Broward Education Foundation’s Innovative Teacher Idea Expo Student Art & Design Contest”.

The 22nd annual expo’s theme wanted artwork to reflect teachers sharing innovative ideas, student learning, or classroom supplies using two-dimensional mediums of art.

Hollywood Academy of Arts & Science strives to introduce a dynamic STEAM program to their students, allowing growth in so many areas.

This is how they originally connected with the Broward Education Foundation and their dynamic Innovative Idea Teacher Expo.

The meaning behind Kohler’s creation was to let others know that through compassion and knowledge we can have worldwide love, kindness, and unity. The talented young artist used colored pencils to bring out a special level of brilliance to her submitted piece.

Although, it was a difficult drawing technique, it was

the most exciting feature for the 6th grade student.

“The hands stood to represent mankind being gentler to the world we live in. The world goes on to represent every living thing from children to grownups and plants to animals and so on,” explained Kohler. “Winning this honor makes me feel more competent in what I’ve drawn and expressed to others. Having taken this piece from a rough draft and on through the various stages of drawing and coloring techniques while honoring the visual message allowed me to express myself and my artistic skills.”

“As an educator, teaching the whole child while providing them with a voice to issues that affect them is at the core of what I do. Elizabeth Kohler is a gifted young artist who analyzes and develops strong works of art. She has a kind gentle heart. Her sensitivity promotes compassion, kindness, and love that makes the world a better place,” exclaimed Hilary Fine, Kohler’s art teacher.

How did you, a physician, get involved with opening one of the world’s most advanced gun ranges? (laughs) It does seem far removed from my role in medicine, doesn’t it? Most people are surprised that I had actually never shot until just a few years before opening Nexus.

Once I started though, I was hooked.

I’m an extremely competitive person and became intensely involved in local pistol matches. I was practicing several times a week, often shooting thousands of rounds.

Over time though, I noticed I was strangely becoming short of breath during my regular exercise routine.

I realized I was inhaling gun smoke and the toxic by-products due to the inadequate ventilation of the ranges I was shooting in. My respiratory function was being compromised, and I was getting lead poisoning!

I took a hard look at the gun industry and asked several questions. Why are there no regulations protecting shooters from suffering the same ailment I did? Why are gun ranges and stores frequently

dirty and unsafe “holes” in the wall?

Why are we still shooting at paper targets in the 21st century? How can we make shooting more fun?

Why do gun store “experts” treat women and novice shooters with such disdain? The concept of Nexus emerged to provide the answer to all of these issues.

How has Nexus addressed the toxic gun smoke? We spared no expense on our ventilation system. The ranges are air conditioned with a milliondollar military grade filtration system, allowing our members to shoot in complete comfort, despite the heat and humidity outside. The air is HEPA filtered and exceeds all OSHA regulations.

You also mentioned safety. What sets Nexus apart? Safety is our number one priority. We have range safety officers on the range to assist our members and ensure everyone’s safety. Each member is separated by bulletproof walls. We also have multiple ranges, so you can come in with your friends or family and shoot in complete safety and privacy.

How has Nexus made shooting more fun? Since the gun’s invention, we’ve been making holes in paper targets which is boring and not great training. My brother and partner in Nexus, Michael Hsiao, has a background in programming. We leveraged his expertise to make shooting more exciting through technology.

Thus, our advanced virtual range, the Nexus Lanes, was born. You shoot

your actual gun and real ammo at interactive video targets, like zombie games, skill drills, asteroids, etc. The computer provides instant feedback, scoring and analyzing each shot. We also have a standard paper target range for those that prefer a traditional experience.

Seems like a great partnership.

Was it just you and your brother that started Nexus? Our third partner, Christopher Longsworth, brought the final piece of the puzzle with his background in real estate development and architecture. All the projects in his portfolio are highly regarded as being at the cutting edge of modern architecture, such as Strata at Plantation, and Koi Marina and Residences in Pompano. It was through his vision that the striking architectural design of the building and high-end retail showroom came to fruition. Our guests call our showroom the “Apple Store” or “Guggenheim Museum” of gun stores

because of the spacious, clean and welcoming environment.

What else distinguishes Nexus? It’s really the experience we offer. Shooting is the “new bowling”, a family friendly activity. We’re not here to just sell guns. “MAX” Lumbar Disc Herniation

with a Pinched Nerve

BY EDWARD J. FRANKOSKI, D.O. here is often confusion when diagnosing neck or back pain since many refer to their discomfort as being a pinched nerve or a herniated disc. The diagnosis is often correct because the two conditions are the most common problem of the pain, but they are both different issues that just happen to occur at the same time.

Typically, a herniated disc occurs in the cervical spine (neck) and the lumbar spine (back). Disc pain tends to most often take place in the lower back where most weight-bearing and movement in the spine occurs. A pinched nerve is caused by a herniated disc pressing against the nerve. In most cases, a herniated disc is not painful, it’s the leaking gel substance which it contains that pinches, inflames, and irritates the nearby nerve.

A spine is made of twenty-four bones called vertebrae, but the lumbar (lower back) bears most of the weight of the body. In between each of the five lumbar vertebrae (bones) is a disc which acts like a tough fibrous shock-absorbing pad which prevents the vertebrae from rubbing together. A disc is filled with a gel-like center and if the disc ruptures or bulges, the gel substance escapes and causes irritation to the spinal nerves resulting in inflammation, pressure, and pain.

Some may also experience leg pain, numbness, and tingling.

The spine contains many nerves which branch out and travel to various parts of the body. If a disc herniates it usually presses on the spinal cord or spinal nerves. These nerves pass through small areas between the vertebrae and the discs, so if a herniated disc presses into the area, it can compress (“pinch”) the nerve which results in the pain associated with the herniated disc.

A herniation may develop instantly or gradually over weeks or months. Many factors increase the risk such as lifestyle choices, aging, and poor posture. Obesity, inadequate nutrition and lack of regular exercise, as well as tobacco use, contribute to the condition. As the body ages, biochemical changes can cause the discs to dry out and be less capable to absorb shock from movement. Additionally, body mechanics such as incorrect lifting and twisting combined with daily wear and tear stress the lumbar spine. Rheumatoid arthritis and genetics may also contribute if a family has a history of the problem.

It’s important to seek medical attention if one is experiencing numbness, weakness, tingling, and extreme burning, or pain. An x-ray may be needed to rule out any other causes of back pain. Imaging tests such as a CT or MRI scan can verify the extent and location of the damage of the soft tissues. Sometimes a myelogram (injection of dye) is needed so the physician can view the problem area with more ease.

The condition is most often treated with rest, pain medication, spinal injections, and physical therapy. Many find improvement in approximately 6 weeks and return to normal activity. However, those with continuing symptoms may be recommended to have surgery. Over time, the herniation may shrink, and the pain will subside and perhaps eventually disappear entirely.

Add Safety to Your List of Resolutions

very January 1st, roughly one in three Americans make New Year’s resolutions to re-evaluate some of their life choices. Indeed, as individuals, we take great pleasure into making them, but they are difficult to maintain.

This year, among some worthy resolutions such as, lose weight, stay fit and healthy, quit smoking, cut back on alcohol, enjoy life to the fullest, cut stress, get more sleep, travel, attempt to also include making some crime prevention resolutions that are just as important to your safety, security and well-being for 2019.

Although 2019 will bring some of the same challenges as 2018, the North Miami Beach Police Department (NMBPD) encourages you to consider the idea of a “fresh start” in a good way to make life-saving crime prevention resolutions. Below are some pointers on how to make these safety resolutions stick: KEEP PERSPECTIVE: Crime prevention is everyone’s business and involves taking some simple steps to prevent crime such as burglary. Therefore, do not make your home an easy prey to burglar. Ensure that windows and doors are locked in order to prevent opportunities for burglaries.

RECRUIT SUPPORT: Become familiar with the different programs and services that the Crime Prevention Unit of the NMBPD has to offer. Share your safe neighborhood goals with others because safer homes and neighborhoods happen when people in the communities are connected with each other.

BE REALISTIC: Assess your home with these few steps: (1) close your curtains at night so that others cannot window shop or “peep” through; (2) assure that you have sufficient lighting by leaving your porch lights on at night and possibly placing motion lights around the corners of your residence; (3) record and register your valuables by keeping track of the serial numbers of select items, marking your valuables, taking photographs of items and jewelry; and (4) protect your identity against fraudsters and scammers by not giving them your personal information AT ALL. DO NOT DRINK, TEXT AND DRIVE: Fun times can easily turn into tragedy when someone decides to drive while he/she is impaired. It is imperative to save your life and/or the life of another person by driving sober!

MAKE YOUR RESOLUTION CONCRETE: Resolve to stay alert while applying “situational awareness ability” wherever you are. Also, resolve to avoid making your vehicle a target; therefore, take the necessary precautions by remembering to “Park Smart, to Lock, to Take, to Hide”.
