Getting into the Holiday Spirit

I

t is hard to believe, but winter is at our door. While we gener-

ally do not get the snow flakes or the frosty winter temperatures, we do get the holiday season. While the upcoming holidays may have different meanings for many of our readers due to their diverse cultural backgrounds and religious beliefs, for all of us it should be a time to reflect on the year gone by. It’s the season to gauge our own conduct. Have we made enough time for our children? Have we reached out to our neighbors to lend a helping hand to those in need? Have we spent time with our parents, our family and our friends? This is the time to mend minor disagreements with family, friends and neighbors; to forgive and forget. This is also the time to remember those less fortunate, to teach our children to share our good fortune with our loved ones, as well as those in need. There are families right here in our communities who need our assistance. Help make the season brighter for them by giving generously. And consider giving your children gifts they will cherish for a lifetime; the gift of love and the gift of giving. The holidays are the perfect time to teach your children to be thankful for what they have and to help others. For that is truly what the holidays are about.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Aktion Club Holds Car Wash Fundraiser for Ease Foundation By Debby Teich

M

embers of the People Helping People of Fort Lauderdale Aktion Club

have been reaching out to people and organizations in the community that need help. They recently held a car wash at a United Cerebral Palsy group home in Davie to raise money for Davie’s EASE Foundation, which offers aid to residents that are in need of temporary emergency assistance. The Aktion Club is part of the Kiwanis clubs in Division 24. It allows adults living with disabilities to participate in community service projects, gain leadership skills and become more involved in society. Several Kiwanis Clubs in Division 24 partnered with their high school Key Clubs and parents to help the Aktion Club with the car wash. All of the Aktion members contributed in some way. Most washed cars, while those who were wheelchair bound cheered for them. The group was determined to raise money and did not let the rainy weather stop them. In total, they raised $125 for the EASE Foundation. “They had so much fun at the event,” said Ingrid Lazarus, Aktion Club chair and advisor. “They could have washed cars all day long, rain or shine.” The Aktion Club currently has 20 members with varying disabilities. They meet once a month to participate in activities, as well as service projects that will benefit the community. In the seven months since the club was chartered, members have collected books for a day care center, golf balls and newspaper for the Humane Society, cards for the military, pennies for puppies at the Humane Society, canned goods for the Salvation Army and much more. “As Kiwanis, it is our responsibility to help the members of the Aktion Club,” said Ingrid. “They run their own meetings and come up with the ideas. We are there to offer advice and help them execute some of their ideas.”

TAG USA wins State Championship Two Years In A Row!

T

AG USA Gymnastics has once again been crowned Florida USAG 2012 State Champions for Level 3 Girls Gymnastics. The First Place USAG State Championship is TAG USA’s second in a row for Level 3 Gymnastics. During the 2011-12 season, TAG USA won State Championships in Level 3, Level 4, and in Prep-Optionals. The unprecedented string of State Championships has vaulted TAG USA Gymnastics into the upper echelon of the nation’s best gyms. On November 17th and 18th, Florida USAG held their State Championship Competition for Level 2 and Level 3 teams in Deerfield Beach. Over 100 participating gymnastics clubs competed in Florida’s illustrious meet. The TAG USA Level 3 Team finished with an all around score of 116.200, beating other top three Florida gyms by nearly two points. TAG USA beat perennial powerhouses like Tampa Bay Turners, Ace, and Orlando Metro by a large margin. TAG USA finished first all around in vault, beam, bars and floor. No other Broward County Gym finished in the top five.

TAG USA Level 2 Gymnastics Team

TAG USA’s gymnasts also had over 20 individual First Place State Champions with every one of their Level 3 gymnasts finishing in the top three in their age group. Even TAG USA’s smallest gymnasts, the Level 2 Team, finished their season with a third place finish in the USAG State Championships. TAG USA’s Level 2 Team is composed mostly of five and six year old girls competing in their first championship meet.

When asked about TAG USA’s amazing success, owners Marissa and Michael Zoldan explained that “success is about quality and numbers.” TAG USA hires the best coaches and doesn’t skimp on the number of coaches needed to properly train a team.” Marissa adds “The quality is TAG USA Level 3 Gymnastics Team in the outstanding and experienced coaches that have been with us and the numbers are in the many coaches that train our teams.” TAG USA, led by Head Coach Leesa van Werven, has eight coaches for the compulsory girls teams, four coaches for the optional girls, two coaches for the boys team, and two for the trampoline team. TAG USA’s investment into quality coaches has certainly paid off with State Championships. Having the largest gym with the most equipment also proves that bigger is better when athletes do not share equipment or floor space with recreational classes. Michael adds that “When you look onto the gym floor, no athlete is waiting in line to train, there are no cost-saving owners training the team, and there is no coach holding a coffee cup or leaning against a wall.” With only four years of ownership, Marissa and Michael Zoldan have raised the quality of girls and boys gymnastics in Broward County. The TAG USA facility is absolutely beautiful and their gymnastics program has become the consistent champion in Florida sports.

We Wish You A Happy & Healthy Holiday Season!

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”

Dear Friend,

well write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 12/31/12) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $45. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell YOu THAT YOu OR AnY OTHeR peRSOn ReSpOnSIBLe FOR pAYMenT HAS THe RIgHT TO ReFuSe TO pAY, cAnceL pAYMenT, OR Be ReIMBuRSeD FOR TReATMenT, WHIcH IS peRFORMeD AS A ReSuLT OF AnD WITHIn 72 HOuRS OF ReSpOnDIng TO THe ADveRTISeMenT FOR DIScOunTeD, OR ReDuceD Fee FOR SeRvIce, eXAMInATIOn, OR TReATMenT.

I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the right. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You Benefit from an Amazing Offer-Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as

great care at a great fee…please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life college and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. Girl Scout Troop Celebrates 100th Birthday in Savannah

By Debby Teich

I

t has been 100 years since Juliette “Daisy” Gordon Low assembled

18 girls from Savannah, Georgia for a local Girl Scout meeting. Today, Girl Scouts has grown to nearly three million members. Last month, members of Girl Scout Troops 10262 and 10465 traveled to Savannah to learn more about Low and to tour her birthplace. Although the organization has evolved to reflect the changing needs and challenges of the girls, it has remained faithful to Low’s vision of building girls of courage, confidence and character. It continues to provide them with a safe place to discover more about themselves and the world around them, to connect with others, and to take action to make the world a better place. The girls in Troop 10262 have been together since they were in first grade. They meet at the New Horizon Methodist Church in Cooper City. For the past seven years, they have been saving all of the money from cookie sales and fundraisers to help pay for the trip. “They wanted to visit Low’s home this year in celebration of the 100th anniversary,” said Cindy Clayton, troop leader. “It taught them the importance of saving for something special.” Although Hurricane Sandy was looming, it did not stop the girls from boarding

14 DTT ALL 1212.indd 14

the Amtrak train to Savannah. The first stop was a tour of Low’s home, where they got a taste of what life was like in the 1800’s. They made thread from cotton and sat at a loom to practice weaving. They also held a pinning ceremony in the garden and talked about the meaning of Girl Scouts. The next day, they took a tour of Savannah. They visited the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, which is the only place in the city that is not “haunted.” They also spent time at the Savannah College of Art and Design, where they drew portraits, built 3-D geometric designs, watched short films, and more. At night, they went on a ghost tour in a hearse. “It was fun to be with the girls from the troop on the trip,” said thirteen-year-old Gianna Clayton. “It was very exciting to see Low’s house and to learn all of the history behind it, but the best part of the trip was the ghost tour.” Throughout the year, the troop participates in a variety of community projects. They have volunteered at the Hollywood Beach Cleanup, Founder’s Day, and many other events. “Girl Scouts teaches the girls so many things that they would not learn normally,” said Cindy. “It helps them develop their full individual potential, relate to others with understanding, respect all people, and use their resources wisely. It also encourages them to help others.”

EASE Foundation Fire Creates Greater Need for Gift Donations Debby Teich

F

or 26 years, the EASE (Emergency

Assistance Service Effort) Foundation in Davie has made sure that less fortunate children in the area have gifts to open on Christmas Day. This year, they planned to provide over 500 kids with five to seven new toys each. They had already started collecting gifts when the unthinkable happened. Last month, a fire destroyed the entire building and all of its contents. “Everything is gone, including the toys and all of the data we have gathered over the past 26 years,” said Linda Owen, executive director of the EASE Foundation. “We had over 200 families already signed up and we are not even sure how to locate them. We are getting calls every day from families who depend on us to help them make it through the holidays.” The non-profit foundation is in the process of finding a temporary home until the permanent structure can be rebuilt. While the fire has been a setback, Owen still plans to try to help as many families as she can during the holidays. “The need is huge and we have never turned anyone away,” said Owen. “This time of the year is so hard for all of our families. They barely have enough money to feed their families and certainly not enough to buy gifts for their children. We want to make sure that at least this one day of the year will be really special for the kids.” EASE is collecting toys and diapers for infants as well as toys for children ages 7-12.

Everything should be new and unwrapped. It is also accepting gift cards. “The kids never know that the gifts come from EASE,” said Owen. “The parents give the gifts themselves with dignity.” Established by the business community and residents of Davie, the EASE Foundation is a prime example of neighbor helping neighbor. The non-profit’s motto is “a hand up, not a hand out,” since it focuses on residents who have experienced a temporary setback and are trying to “ease” their way back into a self-sustaining, productive life. Their hardship is often the result of an emergency, accident, illness, job loss, home or car repairs. Throughout the year, the Foundation also reaches out to the homeless with food, clothing and hygiene supplies. Owen says that the need this year is greater than ever. With the sluggish economy, the Foundation has been helping many middle class families who are struggling to pay their bills, in addition to seniors and others with lower or fixed incomes. “In October alone, we provided over 250 families with two bags of food and a $25 Publix gift card,” said Owen. “We have been averaging 50 to 60 new families each month.”

Lowe’s Hero Program Volunteers Help Clean up Davie PAL By Debby Teich

V

olunteers from the Lowes Hero

Program recently donated their time to give the Davie Police Athletic League facility a much-needed facelift. They made significant improvements to the building, both inside and out. “They did an amazing job,” said Officer Tim Albury, director of Davie PAL. “Now it looks like a professional establishment.” Transforming lives one community at a time — that’s been the mission of Lowe’s Heroes since the volunteer program began in the stores more than 10 years ago. The program encourages employees to team together, adopt a volunteer project with a local nonprofit organization or K–12 public school, and make a difference. Approximately 65 volunteers from several stores in the Davie area arrived at 6:30am and enjoyed breakfast, donated by Rebuilding Together. By noon, they had painted the interior walls of the building, in addition to mulching and landscaping the entire property. They also turned an old storage room into an equipment room by painting the floors and walls, putting up paneling and installing cabinets. “The room looks great,” said Tim. “Now we will be able to keep track of all of the equipment. The kids were so excited to see all of the changes.”

20 DTT ALL 1212.indd 20

At the end of the day, Lowes donated all of the ladders, shovels, paint rollers and tools. Lowes also donated enough paint for the newly resurfaced basketball gym, as well as paneling for the teen room. Davie PAL is a youth crime prevention program that utilizes educational, athletic and recreational activities to create trust and understanding between police officers and youth in the community. It currently offers flag football, boxing, after school tutoring, and mentoring. In the spring it will also offer basketball. Davie PAL is located at 4300 S.W. 57th Terrace, in Davie. For information, visit www. daviepal.org or call 954-3212567. For more information about the Lowe’s Hero Program, visit the web at www.lowes.com.

Neighbors to Celebrate the Winter Solstice By Debby Teich

is strategically placed so that it cradles the sunset during summer and winter solstices. When the sun sets, it appears to sit perfectly in the saddle, where a rider would. Residents have celebrated the solstice since the park opened in 2004. This year’s event is scheduled to begin at 5pm, leaving enough time for everyone to find a spot for their chair or blanket before the sun sets. Organizers will serve light refreshments. Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park is located at 5840 Volunteer Rd., just north of Stirling Rd. in Sunshine Ranches. It has more than 20 acres of lushly-landscaped open space designed for the enjoyment of Southwest Ranches residents and their horses. It is the City’s first public recreational facility and a great place to school a horse; walk a dog; meet some friends or enjoy the surroundings. The park includes a 10,400-square foot practice ring, 37,500-square foot show ring, as well as more than 10 acres of horse and nature trails. It also has a playground, restroom facility and a sheltered seating area.

solstice on December 21, a group of neighbors from Southwest Ranches will meet for a small informal gathering at Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park. They will celebrate the official start of winter, catch up with old friends, and meet some new ones, as they experience the beauty of Richard Medlock’s sculpture. “All are welcome as we gather to celebrate the Solstice and holiday season with neighbors in our tranquil, country location,” said December Lauretano-Haines, Parks, Recreation and Open Space Coordinator for the Town of Southwest Ranches. The word “solstice” is derived from a combination of Latin words meaning “sun” and “to stand still.” Solstices occur twice a year. They are the longest and shortest days of the year, marking the start of summer and winter, respectively. They are also the best days to witness one of the key Richard Medlock’s sculpture is designed so that the sun design elements of Medlock’s Equestrian Oasis, appears to set in the saddle during the solstice. which is located in the park. ver 7,000 chocoholics visited the Festival of Chocolate,

held at the Nova Southeastern University Arena in Davie. The allchocolate shopping, interactive and educational event included two days of creamy, dreamy, cocoa-flavored fun – all in one place. There was something for chocolate lovers of all ages. Some of the highlights included live professional competitions, a cocoa couture fashion show, live demonstrations, chocolate game shows, chocolate classes, guest competitions, wine and chocolate pairings, a chocolate vender showcase and more. Visitors sampled a variety of chocolate-flavored items, including barbeque sauce, wine, olive oil and balsamic vinegar. “Residents in the Davie area sure do love their chocolate!” said Aileen Mand, show producer. One of the big winners was Jonathan Grotsky of Cookielicious in Davie. The former Hard Rock Pastry Chef won the Best Cookie, Best Cake and Best in Show. Carlos Coronado, from the Cordon Bleu Culinary School, won the Chocolate Showpiece Competition. Angela Encio, from the Fontainebleau Miami Beach, won the Live Cake Decorating Competition. Dragana Bubic won the Cocoa Couture Fashion Show for the Chocolate Meltdown, made with over 1,000 chocolate wrappers. Robert Grime attended with his seven-yearold son. “We had so much fun sampling all of the chocolate,” said Robert. “My son got to compete in the cookie stacking contest and decorate a cupcake.”

University School Students Go Bald for a Day By Debby Teich

W

hile most students at the University School of Nova

Southeastern University in Davie paid careful attention to the way their hair looked on November 2, members of the Debbie’s Dream Club decided to go bald. They joined thousands of people around the world that went bald on the same day as part of “Be Bold, Be Bald,” a global fundraiser which honors cancer patients and raises money to fight the disease. Seventy-four students purchased

bald caps for $5 and wore them for the entire day in honor of patients fighting cancer or in memory of someone who lost their battle to cancer. They asked friends and relatives to sponsor them. Between the sale of the caps and online donations, they raised more than $1,000. The Debbie’s Dream club at the school organized the event. Twins Rachel and Zachary Zelman, 14, started the middle school club for their mother, Debbie Zelman, who was diagnosed with Stage IV advanced, incurable stomach cancer in April 2008. The club has its own activities and also supports Can’t Stomach Cancer: The Foundation of Debbie’s Dream. The non-profit organization is dedicated to raising awareness about stomach cancer, advancing funding for research, and providing education and support internationally to patients, families, and caregivers. “I am so proud of how much awareness the middle school club brought to this year’s event,” said Debbie Zelman, club advisor and founder of Can’t Stomach Cancer (formerly Debbie’s Dream). “It means so much to me to see their club grow. The passion that they have to help my dream of making the cure for stomach cancer a reality is overwhelming. This event honors all of those who are affected by cancer in general – especially me. They have warmed my heart.” To make a donation before December 31, visit beboldbebald.org/beneficiary/cantstomachcancer. Legally Speaking CN

Wipe Out Second Mortgages, Avoid Foreclosure and Stay in Your Home By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

T

housands of homeowners in our community are more than

50% upside down on their home mortgages and are looking for a way out. Some are frustrated in their attempts to modify their home loans, and others simply choose to give up their home because they are unsure of their rights. Wouldn’t it be much easier to save your home if you only had one mortgage and no other payments? How about if you were able to eliminate all your mortgage debt through a short sale, and stay in your home through a long term lease? For homeowners who have taken out a second mortgage on their home and lines of credit, facing our current economic climate can be particularly challenging. Additional liens on your home beyond your initial mortgage, however, can be wiped out through a Chapter 13 personal bankruptcy filing. When a judge removes mortgage liens from a property during bankruptcy proceedings it is referred to as “stripping” the lien. In a Chapter 13 bankruptcy, second mortgages, lines of credit and association liens against a homestead residence can be eliminated. Many bankruptcy courts follow a rule that makes a second mortgage, line of credit or other secondary lien totally unsecured if the principal amount owed on the first mortgage exceeds the fair market value of the personal residence. Even if you are not current on your first mortgage, you can use a Chapter 13 bankruptcy catch up on the arrearage over an extended period of time, or you can make a proposed modified mortgage payment under your Chapter 13 plan while your loan modification application is being processed without losing your home to foreclosure. Another effective strategy to remain in your home and wipe out excessive mortgage debt is to negotiate a short sale with an extended term leaseback. Under this strategy, you will be able to wipe out most, if not all your mortgage debt when the short sale is completed. This will allow you to obtain a “fresh start” without filing bankruptcy, and within two years you may be eligible to purchase another home under FHA guidelines. The challenge is to find an investor willing to lease your home back to you, and convincing your lender to authorize the arrangement. The Arcia Law Firm can put you in contact with serious investors who are not interested in “flipping” your home, but instead keeping families in their homes after a short sale through a long term lease. The Arcia Law Firm will also assist you in negotiating every part of the transaction with your lender right down to the closing itself. Holiday Cheer By Evan Baron

M

ost people think of the holiday season with

954-385-9160

gleeful anticipation of time with family. For couples who have been through a divorce, the holiday season can often be a very stressful time. This stress can also be felt by the children of a divorced couple. It is not uncommon for holiday visitation issues to surface during this time of year. Hopefully, the parties’ settlement agreement or final judgment is specific as to time sharing. Over the course of approximately 30 years of practice, my clients have experienced many issues concerning holiday visitation. The biggest obstacle to solving an issue in court during this time of year is the reality that court time is very difficult to schedule during December and, as such, last minute issues usually will not be addressed. Of course, the parties are always able to try and work things out on their own or with the help of attorneys and mediators. I would certainly suggest not waiting until the “last minute” to address any concerns. The best way to insure there will be no conflicts during the holidays is to anticipate potential problems ahead of time and address them in the marital settlement agreement. The more specific your agreement is, the more likely you will not experience conflicts along the way. For couples with minor children who have been divorced in the past three years, Parenting Plans have been mandatory. These Parenting Plans are designed to be very specific as to time sharing in an effort to head off any trouble in years to come. Unfortunately, these Parenting Plans were not used prior to the latter part of 2008 and, therefore, many existing agreements do not include this provision. I believe the most important thing to remember is that any time sharing arrangement should always keep the best interest of the children as a priority. Children want to spend time with both parents and this is especially true during the holidays. They also want to be a part of any family gatherings. Sometimes that is not always possible, but advanced planning may be able to achieve this goal. Often parents divide the entire winter break in half, with Christmas day being the “exchange day.” As an example, in even numbered years such as 2010, perhaps Dad has the children from the day school ends until noon Christmas Day. Mom will pick up the kids and keep them until school begins again. Next year, they can reverse the schedule. In some cultures, Christmas Eve is more of a celebration, so perhaps one parent can celebrate every Christmas Eve and the other Christmas Day. Also remember that “gift giving” is not a competition, with the winner being the parent who spends the most money. Often times the finances of each parent may not be the same and one must buy gifts within his/her budget. For a parent to embarrass the other by purchasing a more expensive and lavish gift is only going to lead to hard feelings and potential problems. Hopefully, the parents can discuss this issue beforehand and plan together. Often parents wish to visit family out of town. Consider the feelings of your former spouse and the children in the planning such a trip. Children have the need to be with extended family during the Holidays. Perhaps holiday trips out of town can be rotated from year to year between parents. Mom and Dad can certainly make the holiday season a joyous time for their children or they can focus on themselves and make it a time that everyone would like to forget.

ccording to Bloomberg, “Warren Buffett’s

Berkshire Hathaway Inc. is extending its bet on the U.S. housing market by forming a venture with Brookfield Asset Management Inc. as low interest rates, inventory and prices spur a real-estate rebound.” One would assume this is a great sign that he believes a real estate recovery is guaranteed. Although the average family has lost over $21,000 in personal “household” wealth because of foreclosure activity, in the grand picture, it is only a matter of time before our housing market fully rebounds. On a personal and local note, I have been listing single family properties this year and they are “flying off the shelf!”

Please view our website for our new educational video.

Consider my current evaluation of Davie: ▸▸ There are 22.8% fewer homes on the market than the same quarter one year ago. ▸▸ Sales are up 16.1% and 7.3% more homes have pended. ▸▸ Prices are up. The Average Active Price is up 7.4% over last month, 4% over last year and .7% over the same quarter one year ago. ▸▸ Sold prices are even better. They are up over 8% over last month, 19.5% over last year and 13.9% over the same quarter one year ago. ▸▸ Currently, there is 6.4 months of inventory. Homes are staying on the market no longer than 90 days and are selling within 90% of their original list price. Consider Cooper City: ▸▸ There are 31.3% fewer homes on the market than the same quarter one year ago. ▸▸ Sales are up .8% and 24.5% more homes have pended. ▸▸ Prices are up. The Average Active Price is up over 8.9% over last year and 7.5% over the same quarter one year ago. ▸▸ Sold prices are even better. They are up over 7.1% over last month, 15.3% over last year and 10.8% over the same quarter one year ago. ▸▸ In Cooper City, homes are selling within 96% of their original list price and are on the market an average of 65 days. ▸▸ Currently, there is 2.9 months of inventory in Cooper City – an indication of a Seller’s market and a recovering market. A sensitive subject: South Florida has one of the strictest building codes in the world. Our homes are built for harsh weather conditions and, in light of what has just occurred in the Northeast with Hurricane Sandy, we must be grateful for the quality. Here’s to a happy and healthy 2013. If you would like a comprehensive, comparative market analysis of a property, contact me at Horton.z@ewm.com, and I will send your report within 24 hours. You can visit my website at www.zonahorton.com to search properties in all of Broward County. You can even perform a search in one of thirteen different languages. I look forward to working with you on your home sale, purchase or lease.

Look Good, Feel Better with Bioidentical Hormone Therapy

S

EX. Everyone is interested or curious when

it comes to this subject material, although we don’t necessarily admit it openly. Even so, Shades Of Grey didn’t fly off the book shelves by itself. Sex and sexuality are important to men and women. As a physician I frequently address patient concerns regarding interest, discomfort, energy, etc. We now see more direct advertisement on television, newspaper and internet. After 2 ½ years of administering bioidentical hormones, I want to bring awareness to everyone that both men and women are having improved sexuality as a result of replenishing a natural level of hormone to the body. Aging is inevitable. Our bodies don’t produce the same level of hormone as we age. Taking care of these changes by bioidentical hormones is not only logical but also natural. How many medication ads on TV list so many side effects that you then are afraid to use the product? This is a treatment that exposes your body to something you have produced naturally. In addition, there are health benefits that go along with this. One of my patient’s asked recently, “How come people don’t know about this?” As physicians we strive to increase knowledge and awareness as we spend time (consultation) with patients to facilitate this. Some examples of common patient complaints can easily be resolved by taking hormones. For instance, “My exercise doesn’t help me lose weight.” Taking bioidentical hormones will raise testosterone levels which in turn facilitates muscle metabolism and reduction of body fat. Or, “My skin is dry. My hair is thinning.” Estrogen will replenish skin and hair better than buying expensive skin creams and hair treatments. Putting back what is missing is far more therapeutic than treating a symptom. The help is here with bioidentical hormones. You need to recognize this and want to receive it. We get older everyday but you don’t have to feel like it. I will close by sharing my personal experience. Bioidentical hormone (testosterone) therapy was very helpful. I noticed that I don’t feel like I need a nap at 2:30 in the afternoon anymore. I enjoy exercise and muscle development is more efficient. Libido is enhanced with physical benefits as well. I encourage everyone to read and understand the benefits of natural bioidentical hormones so you can enjoy the quality of life and health improvements that they provide.

Office are committed to keeping Broward County residents and visitors safe this holiday season and throughout the year. Following some simple safety tips will help keep you and your family safe. Too often, opportunistic criminals prey on holiday shoppers. While you are out making your purchases, stay alert. Remember to park your car in a well-lit area and secure valuables inside your trunk or take them with you. When you return to your vehicle, have your keys in hand so that you can quickly unlock the door and get in. You should never carry large amounts of money and if you go to an ATM for cash, do so during daytime hours in a safe location.

At Vein and Vascular of South Florida we specialize in treating ugly varicose and spider veins. We are one of the first in South Florida to offer the new FDA ClariVein® procedure to treat large varicose veins. This procedure can be done in less than 15 minutes in the office. With the number of vehicles on our roadways and in crowded parking lots, it is important to practice patience. Speeding, distractions and alcohol contribute to the increased number of accidents this time of year. If you are attending a holiday celebration and plan on drinking alcohol, designate a driver or take a cab. The Broward Sheriff’s Office has a ZERO tolerance policy for drunk drivers and will be out in force to ensure all of our roadways are safe. If you will be leaving home for the holidays and live in a Broward Sheriff’s Office jurisdiction, I encourage you to sign up for our free Home Watch program. To sign up for this free service, visit www.sheriff.org/homewatch. Once you fill out the form, please return it to your local BSO district office. There are many ways you can protect your home from thieves. Before you leave town please remember to: ▸▸ secure your doors, windows, garage, storage sheds and gates ▸▸ leave a parked car in your driveway or ask trusted neighbor to park in your driveway ▸▸ have the post office hold your mail ▸▸ stop your newspaper delivery Remember, a few minutes of prevention can save you from becoming a victim of a crime this holiday season. On behalf of the men and women of the Broward Sheriff’s Office, I wish you a safe holiday and very happy New Year. To contact me, call 954-831-8902 or send an email to Ask_The_Sheriff.org.

Live a normal, symptom-free life WiThouT the use of avoidance, pills or shots

At the age of 5 years old, my son, Scottie, was unable to attend birthday parties, could not participate in sporting events, and felt left out of enjoying his childhood due to chronic illnesses of food and environmental factors. Since he began his treatments with Dr. Popkin he is enjoying a healthy asthmafree childhood and can participate in sports. The best news is, that for the first time, he can go to camp and enjoy foods without having allergic reactions. No longer needing to live on a special diet has allowed me and my family to finally enjoy life. To me, this is a miracle! I am so thankful for finding Dr. Popkin and to experience NAET, a natural method for eliminating allergy symptoms. - Susan G.

illi and Cooper are both Shih Tzu’s. Cooper (the darker

haired one) might also have some Yorkee in him. Milli is the princess of the house and Cooper is the new prince. He was recently adopted from Pets in Distress after he was tossed out of a car and left in the street. Cooper loves to play with his stuffed ducky that quacks and chew on his raw-hide bones or anything else he can get. Milli just likes to sit and look pretty. They both love to go for long walks to the park and play with their neighborhood friends Zoe, Cody & Nicky. They don’t like thunder and storms. They get very scared and always run looking for their mommy or daddy. They were last seen chilling out and happy to be so loved.

It’s Their Business

A Facial or Massage from Massage Envy Spa Makes the Perfect Holiday Gift By Debby Teich

A

s the holidays approach, many are

searching for the perfect gift for friends, family and colleagues. A facial or massage is a great way to help alleviate stress as well as to restore balance to the body, mind and spirit. Massage Envy Spa in Cooper City offers a variety of choices for the holidays. Buy one as a gift or treat yourself.

Owner Rick Altman answered some commonly asked questions about Massage Envy Spa in Cooper City.

How long have you been in business? My wife, Pam,

choice. As always, gift cards are a fabulous choice as they allow the recipient to choose their services that best suit their needs. The cards can be sent to out-of-town recipients who can use the card at their nearest spa.

What is so special about your facials? The

Murad Healthy Skin Facials feature specially formulated products from world-renowned dermatologist Dr. Howard Murad. The facials help clients achieve balanced, more youthful looking skin. Sessions begin with a skin analysis by a licensed, trained esthetician who recommends one of four 50-minute custom facials, including a choice of Anti-Aging, Acne, Vitamin C and Sensitive Skin facials. We also sell the full line of Murad retail products so clients can continue their skin care regimen at home.

and I just celebrated our fourth anniversary in our Cooper City location. We Owners Pam and Rick Altman continue to add new services to give our clients more choices, including the addition of Murad Healthy Skin Facials, to our wide variety of massages.

Why do you think massages and facials have remained so popular? In these difficult

economic times, stress plays a major part of our lives. A massage or a facial becomes more of a necessity than a luxury, allowing our clients to have an hour or two of relaxation and “me” time. It is a wonderful gift to give yourself or someone else.

Why do you suggest a membership to Massage Envy Spa? Our members pay discounted rates for all services and can participate in specials and birthday surprises that aren’t offered to non-members.

Are you offering anything special for the holidays? We are offering luxurious gift baskets

which include a package of services of your

Tell us about your therapists. Every therapist

has gone through an extensive interview process, including a hands-on massage with a member of our management team and a professional background check. All of our therapists are licensed, certified and have years of experience.

How many treatment rooms do you have?

We have nine single rooms, as well as one couple’s room that is perfect for couples, friends, or even a parent and child who want to experience a massage together.

What made you decide to open a spa? Pam

became a member of Massage Envy over seven years ago. At first, she went about once a month. She loved it so much that she began going at least 2-3 times per month. She noticed, and so did I, that regular massages helped lessen the frequency of her migraines and lowered her stress level. So, when we were looking for a new business to invest in, it was a perfect match.

the client listens to soothing, spa music lying on a padded table covered with a warming blanket.

What makes Massage Envy Cooper City so convenient? We are open seven days a What are your most popular massages?

Clients can choose from a variety of massages, depending on their needs, whether it be therapeutic or relaxing. Four new aromatherapy massages have proven extremely popular. Clients are treated to a wonderful scented lotion and given a bottle of the lotion to take home. Clients also love the Hot Stone Therapy, which helps melt away tension, eases muscle stiffness, and increases circulation and metabolism. Our Deep Heat Relief Muscle Therapy is ideal for anyone who suffers from chronic pain or limited mobility due to athletic training, repetitive movements, and overuse. Clients are also able to choose 90 or 120 minute sessions, which allow the therapist to target a specific troubled area and give an amazing full body massage.

Describe a typical massage session. A mas-

sage therapy session begins with a five minute consultation, which allows the therapist to customize the treatment and address any injuries, ailments or other areas of concern. A session includes 50 minutes of hands-on therapy while

week for over 84 hours, including late nights and weekends. Many customers come during lunch, after a long bike ride or run, once the kids are asleep or to celebrate a special occasion.

Do you sell retail products? We sell

the full line of Murad skin care products and specialize in anti-aging, acne, vitamin C, resurgence, sensitive skin and men’s grooming products. In addition, we offer all natural wonderful smelling soy candles that double as a hand lotion and Biofreeze products.

Dining Out

Salsa Fiesta Celebrates One Year Anniversary with New Menu Items By Debby Teich

S

ince opening a year ago, Salsa Fiesta Urban Mexican Grill in

Pembroke Pines has become the go-to dining destinations for fresh, affordable Mexican cuisine. The menu includes an assortment of dishes that are robust in flavor and range from classic tacos, burritos and fajitas to salads, soups, specialty dishes and combination platters. Patrons can mix different items from the menu or build their own dishes customized to their personal tastes. To celebrate its one year anniversary, the restaurant has added a variety of tempting new items, including “tortas,” an array of homemade Mexican griddled telera bread sandwiches. In 2009, Cesar Olivo, Samuel Perez Benatar and Adriana Perez Benatar opened Salsa Fiesta in Miami and it was an instant success. All of the food is cooked to order using only fresh, high quality ingredients. The restaurant is as popular with foodies and the business crowd as it is with families or teenagers seeking a delicious meal at an unbeatable price. “The secret to our success is our commitment to customer service and never skimping on quality,” says Olivo, who is currently, along with his team, Acapulco Salad working on a third location to open in Aventura later this month. “Our guests know that everything is made in-house and that freshness, flavor and affordability are our priorities.” The restaurant boasts a vibrant, urban ambiance, replete with colorful Aztec and Mayan-inspired murals and artwork. Featuring smooth concrete walls lined with reclaimed wood and exposed ceilings, the décor expresses an industrial, loft-like setting with dynamic pops of color from tangerine chairs to planters of bright mosaic tiles. In addition, Salsa Fiesta uses eco-friendly products. The restaurant serves their dishes on organic bamboo plates which are non-toxic, melamine-free and biodegradable. In lieu of plastic forks and knives, Salsa Fiesta uses real silverware as well as reusable plastic cups which are not harmful to the environment. The dishware helps reduce waste in the environment and enhances the overall dining experience. Salsa Fiesta uses fresh vegetables from the field (Napa tomatoes, cabbage, Hass avocados, Caribbean plantains, Elote corn, tomatillo, fresh peppers) and all of the meats are marinated on the premises. The restaurant has an open kitchen, so customers can watch as the chefs peel the avocados for the infamous guacamole, the plantains for the crispy Tostones or the tomatoes for one of the Gourmet Salsas (Hot Tamale Salsa, Mango Relish, Pico de Gallo, Creamy Cilantro Salsa, Creamy Avocado Salsa, Creamy Chipotle Salsa). There are also many options for the health-conscious, including gluten-free. There are a variety of vegetarian dishes and anything on the menu can be ordered without meat. When ordering tortillas, customers can choose crispy, flour, whole wheat or lettuce wraps. They can also order white or brown rice. All of the creamy salsas are made with low fat yogurt. The new Tortas have quickly become one of the most popular items on the menu. Choose from Milanesa (crispy chicken breast, black beans, poblano rajas, pickled onions, Chihuahua cheese, chipotle cream, avocado and arugula), Choriqueso (chorizo, queso fresco a la plancha, black beans, poblano rajas, sundried Levanta Muerto tomatoes, crushed chili

Huevos Rancheros

salsa and avocados), and Pepito (steak, chipotle black beans, caramelized onions and mushrooms, Chihuahua cheese, light balsamic aioli and arugula). All Tortas are served with freshly-made tortilla chips, Salsa Fiesta’s signature Hot Tamale salsa and an arugula side salad. All of the old menu favorites still remain. Some of them include the Acapulco Salad (roasted corn, pico de gallo and guacamole served over a bed of lettuce with creamy cilantro salsa and crispy tostones), with a choice of Chicken, Beef, Carintas, Veggies, Steak or Fish. Another popular item is the Guerrero Taco Platter (three lettuce-wrapped tacos filled with onions, cilantro, mango salsa, red cabbage, creamy cilantro salsa and cheese), served with chips and pico de gallo, with a choice of Chicken, Beef, Carintas, Veggies, Steak or Fish. If you are looking for a weekend brunch that isn’t the “same old same” and won’t break the bank, come to Salsa Fiesta on Saturdays and Sundays, from 10am to 1pm. The special brunch menu is filled with appetizing Mexican brunch favorites, including Levanta Muerto (a.k.a. Salsa Fiesta’s “Hangover” Tortilla Soup), which is topped with a fried egg and Gluten-free Mexican Style Waffles (made with almond flour, dusted with Azteca cinnamon sugar, topped with fresh seasonal berries and whipped cream), which is served with organic blue agave nectar syrup and guava dipping sauce. On the libations front, guests can enjoy refreshing Mimosas (made with freshly squeezed orange juice and champagne), Margaritas and Sangria. The Happy Hour is always a favorite. It runs Monday – Friday, from 3 – 7pm. Specials include $2.50 Margaritas and Sangria; $1.99 on all draft beer; and $1.50 for imported beer bottles. Salsa Fiesta also has an extensive catering menu for a crowd of 10 to 1,000. Guests can enjoy the same great food while attending a meeting, special event, birthday party or some other function. Pick up the food or have the catering department Zocalo Torta Sandwich deliver, set up and serve. Salsa Fiesta Urban Mexican Grill is located at 14914 Pines Blvd. in the Cobblestone Plaza, on Pines Blvd., just west of I-75.It is open for lunch, dinner and brunch.
