Spring is finally here!

I

t seemed this Florida ‘winter’ season had a num-

ber of cool days and even colder nights. But now, with the Easter/Passover holidays behind us and the kids back in school after their March break holidays, the temperatures are slowly creeping upwards and the A/C units are humming. It’s time to start thinking about what to do this summer. For kids, summer time means camp. We are blessed with a variety of different program options. From language camps to sports camps to music camps and even arts & craft camps, there is some sort of program available to appeal to every child. Many people are now planning where to go over summer vacation. Like my family, many of us have relatives and friends out-of-state or even in another country. Summer is always a fantastic time to go and visit, to re-connect, and to maintain a close bond with those we love. As South Floridians we love to visit different cities, climb mountains and travel abroad. Of course, our own state offers plenty of travel options from the azure waters and fantastic fishing in the Keys to the always popular theme parks in Orlando to beautiful and historical Saint Augustine. Wherever your travels take you, don’t forget to take along a copy of Davie Town Times. It’s a great way to keep up with what’s going on at home while you’re away. Plus, if you send us a picture of you holding your magazine from your vacation destination, you might be the next winner in our The World’s Favorite Newspaper™ contest.

M

ore than 50 years ago,

On April 27, the City of Cooper City will host the 54th Founder’s Day Parade and Festivities to celebrate his success. There will be plenty of activities for the entire family to enjoy all day long. The morning festivities will be held at the Cooper City Community Center, 9000 SW 50th Place. They begin at 7:30am, with a pancake breakfast, sponsored by the Boy Scouts. and much more. The evening activities begin at 6:30pm, with a concert in the park. Residents are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and picnic blankets to listen to the music. At 9pm, residents can watch a spectacular fireworks display. The weekend ends with the Annual Founder’s Day Golf Classic on April 28, hosted by the Cooper City Optimist Club. “I wait all year for this event,” said Cooper City resident Mike Fish, who has attended for the past six years. “It is a great way to spend time with friends and neighbors. We always have a great time.” Individuals, groups, and organizations wishing to participate should stop by the Community Center or call the Recreation Department at 954-434-4300, ext. 233. For a complete list of events and application forms, visit www.coopercityfl.org.

The parade is one of the highlights of the celebration.

Sea Dragons Triathlon Club Promotes a Multi-sport Lifestyle for Kids By Debby Teich

T

riathlon is a great way for kids to

stay active and have fun. This month, the South Florida Sea Dragons will kick off another season of training kids to compete. The youth triathlon club is dedicated to promoting a multi-sport lifestyle for boys and girls, ages 7-15. “Although triathlon is one of the fastest growing youth sports in the United States, it is not as well known in South Florida,” said Sea Dragons founder and coach Maria Supik. “I hope to help change that.” The triathlon season runs from April to September. The Sea Dragons will participate in 12 events, with half of them in the South Florida area. Most of the races feature the familiar swim-bike-run format, but the distances are much shorter than in adult races. “Kids do not have to be super athletes to participate in a triathlon.” said Maria. “If they can run, bike and 2012 Sea Dragons Triathlete Club swim, they can enter. Since there are three very different activities, they don’t get bored. These are also three sports that most kids do well.” The athletes in the club represent every body type and fitness level and each one has a different race goal. Some just want to finish, while others are trying to set a new personal record or win the whole race. Last year, members competed in local races,

Ironkids, regional and national youth triathlons. “In most team sports, the best players get the most playing time,” said Maria. “In triathlons, everyone has the same opportunity to compete. No one is ever left out.” Maria coaches the kids Monday through Thursday on a rotating schedule. Training consists of one day of biking, one day of running and two days of swimming. They practice running and biking at local parks. They swim at the Cooper City Pool and Tennis Center with the Cyclones Swim Team. The kids also work on transitions and conditioning. “Most kids can finish a triathlon, as long as they have the desire,” said Maria. “The more they train, the better they get. They see the results from race to race.” During the off season, the Sea Dragons strengthen their mountain biking skills. They work on bike handling, strength, conditioning and agility. “They build their self-confidence both on and off the bike, while having fun,” said Maria. “We have some great trails in South Florida with paths that range from easy to very challenging.” For information, call 786-553-2763, visit www.southfloridaseadragons.com, or send an email to sfseadragons@hotmail.com.

Chiropractic? Why Not?

“A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward” It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say:

Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first.

Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy in the back.

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that!

Davie Residents to Participate in 17th Annual Waterway Clean-Up By Debby Teich

T

he message is clear. Davie residents are proud of their com-

munity and they want to make sure that it is litter-free. On April 27, several hundred residents are expected to participate in the Town of Davie and Central

Broward Water Control District’s 17th Annual Waterway Clean-up and Trash Splash. The effort started with a group of volunteers gathering on a Saturday and has grown into a major event involving school clubs, boy and girl scouts, religious and non-profit organizations, local families and individuals. Organizers are looking for groups, families, or individual residents to help clean and pick up trash from the canal banks. They also need residents with small boats to clean the canal waters.

Check-in for the event begins at 8:30am at Davie Town Hall and the clean-up will last from 9 to 11:30am. Each of the volunteers will be assigned to a small area along the C-11 Canal. In total, they will clean more than eight miles along Orange Drive and Griffin Road, between State Road 7 and Flamingo Rd. In return for their efforts, participants will receive community service hours, a free Waterway T-Shirt or hat, and a ticket for admittance to the “Trash Splash” pool party, held at Pine Island Park Pool after the clean-up. There will be free food, a DJ, swimming and lots of fun. The public awareness campaign seems to be working. In the past, volunteers found many large items, such as cars, refrigerators and air conditioners. Each year, however, they find fewer large items and less trash. Allison Gibbs plans to participate in the clean-up with her children. She is very concerned about the environment and wants to do what she can to keep her Town clean. “I was impressed by last year’s Clean Up and decided to join the effort,” said Allison. “I am always so frustrated by people who litter. We must preserve the planet for our children and future generations.” Pre-registration is required. For information, visit www.davie-fl.gov or call 954-797-1153.

Beat Belly Fat – Hormone Optimization By Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette

H

Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Reverse The Signs of Aging

ave you noticed that as you age unwanted fat

appears to settle around your waist? Not only is this unattractive, but carrying weight around your mid-section predisposes you to many health risks, such as diabetes, coronary artery disease, hypertension and more. Belly fat is a key indicator of a hormonal imbalance. The hormonal imbalance may be one or more of the following: high or low Estrogen, low Testosterone, low DHEA, and high Cortisol. It is imperative for a weight loss program to include diet, exercise and sleep. However, even with the best exercise and diet program, without hormonal balance it will be extremely difficult to lose the weight and keep it off! Diet A diet low in processed sugars, refined carbohydrates and high in protein is best for fat burning. This means making wiser food choices, such as avoiding sugary drinks and sodas, alcohol, processed foods, and packaged low-fat foods. Apply what is known as the five second rule. If you pick up a food and within five seconds you are unable to determine the source of the food, then don’t eat it. Try eating either plant or animal derived foods which are not processed. Diets high in protein help maintain your blood sugar, which in turn decreases cravings. Good choices of protein rich food are those low in fat like the following: turkey, chicken, eggs, shell fish. Cortisol Consistently elevated levels of Cortisol, the stress hormone, can wreak havoc on the body, both internally and externally. Internally, continued elevated Cortisol levels cause a loss in bone density, libido, memory and depression. Externally, you will notice increase flabbiness and loss of muscle mass. Elevated Cortisol levels will increase food cravings. Not only will you have the propensity to gain weight, but will look older than your age with continued increased levels of Cortisol. With a simple saliva test, your Cortisol levels can be determined and proper treatment with natural supplements can correct this imbalance. In addition to customized supplements, sleep and diet is imperative for treatment. Sleep is extremely important as this is the time the body repairs itself. Sleep deprivation can cause an increase in Cortisol levels. It is recommended to get between 7-9 hours of sleep nightly. In addition, Cortisol levels may be increased when not eating every 3-4 hours to fuel the body. Greater than 4 hours between meals will raise Cortisol levels, increasing sugar levels and insulin and promoting fat storage. Look for us next month for Part 2 as we will discuss the impact of an imbalance with DHEA, Estrogen, and Testosterone causing an increase in Belly Fat – and how balance can help YOU loose it and keep it off! Call us today and schedule your free consultation at 954-384-8989. Saint Mark’s Annual Carnival Returns By Debby Teich

S

aint Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, located in Southwest

Ranches, held its Annual Carnival in the Ranches to benefit the St. Mark Catholic Church and School. The carnival had midway rides, entertainment and an indoor garage sale. There was also the popular “home food international” tent, featuring American, Latin and Italian cuisine made by parishioners. Some of the food included: gyros, corn on the cob, funnel cakes, chicken wings, a Country Corner, hot dogs, brats, ice cream and more. Adults also enjoyed beverages at Bob Egan’s Irish Pub, named in memory of a long time St. Marks Men’s Club member and volunteer

who passed away last year. The carnival concluded with a once in a lifetime achievement for Pastor Father Edmond Whyte, who was invested as a Monsignor at Saint Mary’s Cathedral in in Miami. Over 1,000 people attended the ceremony, which was conducted by Archbishop Wenski. Father Whyte’s appointment was one of newly retired Benedict XVI’s last acts. Local Scout Promises “Fun in the Sun” for Autistic Children By Debby Teich

O

n April 27, during Autism Awareness month, Zachary Hoagland

of Cooper City will reach out to the autistic community to offer them Fun in the Sun. This event will help him achieve his dream of becoming Troop 460’s next Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in the program. The family picnic and water play day will be held at Markham Park, from 11am to 2pm. There will be a water station with hoses and sprinklers, as well as sensory stations, arts and crafts, bounce houses, bubbles, a box maze, bean bag toss, basketball throw, obstacle course, fire rescue vehicles, and plenty of food. Kids with autism who attend will get a T-shirt and a Goodie bag. Since Zachary is expecting more than 500 people to attend the free event, he will need plenty of assistance. Volunteers from Troop 460, as well as Cooper City High School’s drama and Best Buddies clubs will be at the park to help make the day a success. The title sponsor, Autism Society of Florida, will also offer support. “It is an event that will provide a safe setting for families to bring their children with autism to enjoy their day without stares from those who don’t understand autism,” said Zachary. “There will be games that are especially adapted for kids with autism. It will be an overall great time for kids who may not get a lot of outdoor play for a bunch of different reasons.” Three years ago, his brother, Matt, organized something similar Zachary Hoagland organized Fun in the Sun for kids with autisim.

to earn his Eagle Scout rank. It was called Fun in the Field. “My event will have more water play, because I know that’s what kids with autism like,” said Zachary. Zachary was diagnosed with autism when he was two years old and was non-verbal until the age of three. Although school is more difficult for him than most kids, he made a decision to stay in regular classes and was never retained. In June, he will graduate from Cooper City High School with his peers. “He could have graduated with a Special Diploma or graduated a few years late, but he was determined to graduate on time with a regular diploma,” said Stacey Hoagland, his mother. “He worked hard for every Zachary Hoagland teaches younger scouts to cook. grade. It is a huge accomplishment. His life is very challenging and I am so proud of him.” Zachary has been involved with Scouting since he was in first grade. Only five percent of all Boy Scouts achieve Eagle Scout rank and he was determined to be among them. Requirements include earning at least 21 merit badges, as well as an extensive service project that the Scout plans, organizes, leads, and manages. If everything goes as planned, Zachary will soon share a prestigious title with notables like Neil Armstrong, Michael Bloomberg, Gerald R. Ford, Bill Gates Sr., James A. Lovell Jr. and many others. T

his month, Young At Art Museum

(YAA) will come alive with two events. On April 6 and 7, it will partner with the Broward County Library for the YAA Festival of the Arts. On April 26, it will host the STOMP for YAA! gala. Both events will be held at the YAA Museum, located at 751 S.W. 121 Ave. in Davie. On April 6, from 10am to 6pm, the visual and performing arts will take center stage as children and teens, ages 5 to 18, create and sell their artwork. There will be entertainment by Broward County cultural and musical groups. Artists Ricardo Agudelo, Henning Haupt, Rachel Henriques, Hugo Moro, Gustavo Oviedo, and Ruben Ubiera will display their works throughout the museum and host interactive educational art workshops for the public. There will be several free workshops which will teach kids about drumming circles, cartoonists, Raku firing, printing on fabric and more. For a fee, patrons can join photographers Melanie and Stephanie Metz in the darkroom to learn about cyanotype printing or professional artist Niko Yulis and YAA Institute Instructor Sue Aguilera in the Ceramics Studio for a spin at the wheel. On Sunday, April 7, from 11am to 6pm, the literary arts will be highlighted as renowned children’s book authors, storytellers, guest artists and an outdoor book fair are featured. Some of the appearances and readings by children’s book authors and art

workshops include: Forest of Families Collaborative Totem Art Project with artist Eddie Garden; Toni Withaneye, author and illustrator of Moon Jumping Babies and Little Thunder’s First Sound; Author Dani Lynn and Artist Jacklyn Laflamme, creators of The Fairy Tale Project, which combines fantasy images with the written word. “We started this festival 18 years ago and it grew into one of our signature family events and one of the largest outdoor children’s art festivals in the nation,” said Mindy Shrago, CEO and executive director of Young At Art Museum. “We are thrilled to be adding the literary component by partnering with the Broward County Library.” Presented by the Hudson Family Foundation, STOMP for YAA! will be held on April 26, at 7:30pm. The second annual gala will bring together athletes and donors to help raise funds to benefit YAA’s programming for underserved and atrisk youth. Guests will be treated to entertainment, featuring a live performance by cast members of STOMP, as well as local dance sensation Sean’s Dance Factory; hands-on art encounters; and epicurean delights throughout the Museum. The exciting silent auction offers the opportunity to bid on cruises, sports memorabilia, jewelry and more. For information, visit YoungAtArtMusuem.org.

n a Dissolution of Marriage, the couple’s finances

are usually the main issue in the case. Finances are considered in determining the division of assets and liabilities (equitable distribution), child support and alimony. In most instances, determining a spouse’s income is not very difficult. Tax returns, w-2’s and pay stubs can assist in determining a person’s yearly income. However, not everyone is a salaried employee who gets paid on either a yearly salary or standard 40 hour work week. There are many people who work on commission or have a large part of their income paid in either quarterly or yearly bonuses. So are these bonuses income? How do we determine income when a bonus is not guaranteed or a commissioned sales person cannot predict how his year will be? In determining child support, each parent’s income must be considered to calculate the monthly support. It cannot be recalculated each month depending on an individual’s income which may vary based on sales totals or bonuses. Income is actually defined by Florida Statutes as follows: ▸▸ Salary or wages. ▸▸ Bonuses, commissions, allowances, overtime, tips, and other similar payments. ▸▸ Business income from sources such as self-employment, partnership, close corporations, and independent contracts. “Business income” means gross receipts minus ordinary and necessary expenses required to produce income. ▸▸ Disability benefits. ▸▸ All workers’ compensation benefits and settlements. ▸▸ Reemployment assistance or unemployment compensation. ▸▸ Pension, retirement, or annuity payments. ▸▸ Social security benefits. ▸▸ Spousal support received from a previous marriage or court ordered in the marriage before the court. ▸▸ Interest and dividends. ▸▸ Rental income, which is gross receipts minus ordinary and necessary expenses required to produce the income. ▸▸ Income from royalties, trusts, or estates. ▸▸ Reimbursed expenses or in kind payments to the extent that they reduce living expenses. ▸▸ Gains derived from dealings in property, unless the gain is nonrecurring. The above clearly shows that income is not just what a person may bring home each week in a check. Car allowances, for instance, would be considered reimbursed expenses or in kind payments, which must be considered as income. I am often asked whether overtime (again never guaranteed) is income. The answer is “yes” and it will be considered when determining child support. Of course, if overtime is no longer available because of economic conditions, then it should be considered as well. A voluntary reduction in income, such as refusing overtime when it is available, is not permitted and such a reduction will not be considered. Once again, if you have any questions, I suggest you contact an experienced family law attorney for the answers. Call my office for a free consultation at 954-385-9160.

the iPads. By opening day of the 2012/13 school year, AMHS was fully integrated and using the iPad to its maximum ability. The administration and staff were committed to continued improvement in student learning by fostering exploration, collaboration, and communication through technology. All AMHS classrooms had been retrofitted with flat screen TV’s and Apple TV. The school also converted the Media Center to an iLounge, where students study in a university style setting and check out free ebooks. In February, the school broke ground on a 21st Century Classroom. The flexible 8,000 square foot learning space has movable walls that can transform five separate classrooms into one large learning space. It should be completed and ready for the beginning of the 2013/14 school year.

wo years ago, Archbishop McCarthy

High School in Southwest Ranches had spotty internet access and teachers were using overhead projectors. Since then, the school has enhanced teaching and learning through a variety of innovative technological changes. It was recently one of 87 schools in the country to be named an Apple Distinguished School for 2012-2013. The designation is reserved for schools which meet criteria for innovation, leadership, and educational excellence, and demonstrate a consistent vision of exemplary learning environments. On February 8, Apple representatives enjoyed a warm welcome from the entire student body, Supervising Principal Father Brendan Dalton, Principal Richard P. Jean, and Dr. Donald Edwards, ADOM Associate Superintendent of Secondary Schools. “Archbishop McCarthy’s Apple Distinguished School designation is due to our dedication to educational innovation through technology,” said Principal Richard P. Jean. The changes have been gradual. In 2011, AMHS introduced students and teachers to the concept and daily use of iPads in the classroom. The school also implemented a security system managed through

Loan Modification vs. Foreclosure – A Dangerous Waiting Game By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

M

ost homeowners that are in foreclosure, or even at risk of

foreclosure, attempt to solve their mortgage crisis through self-help. They will submit one loan modification application after another, numerous sets of the supporting documents, and updated financial information in hopes that their lender will respond with a positive result. This process, however, may take months or even years if you choose to do it on your own. Most lenders may not stop the foreclosure process or even a judicial sale of your home just because a loan modification application is under review. In fact, the longer the modification review process takes, the more likely you will be declined, and lose your home through foreclosure. Here are three keys to stop foreclosure proceedings so that you can obtain a loan modification before losing your home. The first key is to consult with professionals that are knowledgeable not only about the loan modification process, but also about the foreclosure process. The Arcia Law Firm has an experienced in-house loss mitigation department with full time loan negotiators, and over 17 years of experience defending foreclosure matters. We are familiar with the valid legal defenses to a foreclosure case in Florida, and also how to properly and legally cancel foreclosure sales.

The longer the modification review process takes, the more likely you will be declined and lose your home through foreclosure. Secondly, the best defense is usually a good offense. As explained in our previous articles, whenever it is appropriate, we will present a counterclaim against lenders within a foreclosure case. This counterclaim usually involves violations of Federal or State laws committed by the original lender that may be attributable to the current lender. Through a valid counterclaim, you may even be entitled to relief from errors committed by your current lender while servicing your loan, such as escrow errors, misapplied or unapplied funds, and overcharges. Placing lenders on the defensive usually slows down the foreclosure process, and provides much needed motivation for lenders to negotiate a loan modification under more reasonable terms. Thirdly, a bankruptcy filing under Chapter 13 not only stops the foreclosure proceedings, but actually provides homeowners with an opportunity for a “second look” at their loan modification application under the all new mediation program available only in South Florida bankruptcy courts. You will be entitled to participate in this program even if your loan modification application has been previously declined. The Arcia Law Firm has an established bankruptcy department with more than 12 years of experience that works alongside its loan negotiators to ensure that a viable loan modification plan is submitted with every bankruptcy petition. Under a Chapter 13 bankruptcy, you may also be able to eliminate second mortgages, homeowner’s association and IRS liens, pay off investment properties in five years or less at their current market value, and wipe out credit card and medical debt. In short, a foreclosure is a serious legal matter that can lead to the loss of your home, and a significant money judgment against you if not properly handled by legal professionals. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new consumer-friendly DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home,” available for purchase on our website. If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine you will receive a FREE copy during the appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free consultation, or visit www.arcialawfirm.com for more information.

CN the Expert Ask

Early Orthodontic Treatment By Dr. Alon Grosman

T

here is no doubt that the average age of orth-

odontic patients has lowered through the years. Just open a yearbook from the 50’s and 60’s and you will see many young adults wearing the stereotypical “train tracks” across their teeth. Movies have spoofed the usage of head gears during the high school years, which was common practice in that era. Braces have become smaller, sleeker, more colorful, and worn with pride by many preteens. For those of you who have young children at home, the main question is whether early treatment is right for your child. To best answer this question, it is first important to define some terms. When discussing “early treatment,” I personally prefer the term “interceptive treatment”. It has the connotation of catching something before it becomes a bigger problem. The more common and practical term is “phased” orthodontic treatment. In this case, treatment done at an earlier age (usually between 6-9 years old) is referred to as Phase I. It is aimed at correction of habits, skeletal discrepancies as well as severe abnormalities in dental eruption. The later treatment, Phase II, is usually done at around 11-13 years old in order to place all permanent teeth in an ideal position. I call it more practical, because in most cases the second treatment is needed. The name serves as a reminder to the parents of this fact. Currently, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that the first orthodontic evaluation occur by age 7. Does this mean that all children require phased orthodontic treatment? Certainly not. The criteria for starting early treatment should be better or more predictable results. In my opinion, this is certainly the case when the upper jaw is too narrow and must be expanded, when upper front teeth are so protrusive (“buck”) that the incidence of trauma is much more likely (unless corrected), and in cases of underbite (when the lower jaw is forward of the upper jaw). These treatments are “no brainers” for two reasons. The body of the younger patient is more amenable to these specific orthopedic (growth) corrections and statistically the preteen is more likely to traumatize a front tooth than at any other time. There are other times that treatment may be done for psychosocial reasons, as some children are very conscious of cosmetics. For those parents who are considering early treatment for their children, I recommend listening with an open mind. See if the reasons for starting treatment make sense to you. If it does not make sense, don’t do it! I find that most parents have a life philosophy which may make them either more or less open to preventative type treatments. As a parent, I find that I know what my child will be able to handle. Most importantly, if you decide as a family to start, have fun with it. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. What You Need to Know About Deep Brain Stimulation There are more than 100 nervous system disorders that afflict millions of people across the globe. Many of the disorders affect a person’s movement and alter their motor controls. This includes balance, gait, speed of movement, tremors, jerks and abnormal postures. Deep brain stimulation or DBS has successfully treated these symptoms and allowed many sufferers to reclaim their lives.

If further treatment is needed, the neurologist and the neurosurgeon will work together to coordinate the DBS procedure. The team will monitor electrical impulses to correctly diagnose and supervise recordings that optimize their patient’s treatment.

Badih Adada, MD Cleveland Clinic Florida, Neurosurgeon

Q: Who should consider DBS? A: There are many complex factors that must be considered before committing to DBS. You should discuss your condition and symptoms with a neurologist who specializes in movement disorder. Patients who have tried medical treatments including medications, and have not attained satisfactory control of their disorder, should talk to a physician about their DBS options.

At Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Neuroscience Center, a collaborative approach is utilized. The team of neurologists and neurosurgeons has pioneered the use of DBS since the original clinical trials in the mid-1990s. Cleveland Clinic Florida continues to be at the forefront of innovative breakthroughs and successful treatments.

To schedule a consultation, please call 800.639.DOCTOR, or visit clevelandclinicflorida.org.

Q: What is deep brain stimulation (DBS)? A: DBS is the use of small electrical shocks sent to the brain. Electrodes are placed in specific areas of the brain; the location depends on each patient’s specific symptoms and treatments. The electrodes are connected by wires to a device, similar to the pacemaker and that are implanted under the skin, below the collarbone. The device will continuously send electrical pulses to the brain targets, stopping the impulses that cause tremors or other movement disorders. s I have reported to you, there is a shortage

of inventory in Davie and Cooper City. According to the National Association of Realtors (NAR) Existing Home Sales Report, there is a shortage of housing inventory being reported throughout much of the country. At the same time, buyer demand is dramatically up over last year. Consider these national statistics: ▸▸ Total housing inventory at the end of January fell 4.9 percent to 1.74 million existing homes available for sale, which represents a 4.2-month supply at the current sales pace. ▸▸ This represents the lowest housing supply since April 2005, when it was also 4.2 months. ▸▸ Listed inventory is 25.3 percent below a year ago, when there was a 6.2-month supply. ▸▸ Raw unsold inventory is at the lowest level since December 1999, when there were 1.71 million homes on the market. As you may remember from your high school Economics 101 class, the price of anything is determined by supply and demand. According to NAR’s report, inventory is at its lowest level since the real estate boom eight years ago. Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist, reveals: “Buyer traffic is continuing to pick up, while seller traffic is holding steady. In fact, buyer traffic is 40 percent above a year ago, so there is plenty of demand but insufficient inventory to improve sales more strongly. We’ve transitioned into a seller’s market in much of the country.” Calculated Risk, a well-respected blog, stated: “With the low level of inventory, both in absolute numbers and as a month-of-supply, and the recent price increases in some areas, it would seem likely more inventory would come on the market.” Lawrence Yun agrees: “We expect a seasonal rise of inventory this spring.” Therefore, one would conclude that NOW would be the time to list your home. As sellers realize that home prices are truly on the rise, homeowners may want to beat their “neighbor to the punch” by being the first to list and first to sell. There has been very little rise in mortgage rates, giving buyers more buying power than ever before in history. If you have decided to stay in your home, enjoy it a little longer and perhaps even update it before you list. What updates would be the best return on your investment? The cost and ROI averaged across America (according to Melissa Dittmann Tracy, of Realtor magazine), showed an above fifty percent return on your investment. Take a look at just a few of these examples: Project Entry door replacement (steel) Deck addition (wood) Garage Door replacement Minor kitchen remodel Window Replacement (wood) Major kitchen remodel Bathroom Addition Bathroom Remodel

Job Cost $1,137 $9,327 $1,496 $18,527 $10,708 $53,931 $70,969 $50,007

Return on Investment 85.6% 77.3% 75.7% 75.4% 73.3% 68.9% 56% 58.3%

Whether you decide to stay and remodel and live through the inconvenience is up to you. Perhaps you would like me to discuss the benefits of listing your home now “as-is” versus doing a remodel. Recently, I remodeled my home and I can give you first-hand recommendations and share some stories with you that may help you make a decision. Regardless, I am here for you. Just give me a call. If you would like a comprehensive, comparative market analysis of a property, contact me at Horton.z@ewm.com, and I will send your report within 24 hours. ennis in South Florida is one of the most enjoy-

able and practiced sports activities. Unfortunately many tennis players and other athletes develop shoulder pain from playing and overuse. This pain can be caused by a traumatic event or by wear. If the pain started after an event such as serving the ball when you developed sudden onset of pain and limitations in range of motion and strength, most likely you have injured your rotator cuff tendon. If, on the other hand, your pain started slow over a prolonged period of time you may have shoulder bursitis or tendonitis. Most of the shoulder injuries can start a basic treatment protocol. Rest for one to two weeks, immediate icing for 20 minutes three times a day, and anti-inflammatory medications for 14 days. Failure to get better with this basic treatment is an indication that you should visit an orthopaedic surgeon. If you noticed that raising your arm causes you to have pain in your shoulder you may have “IMPINGEMENT” or “ROTATOR CUFF” syndrome. This pain is directly a result of your bursae and rotator cuff getting pinched within your shoulder or a partial versus complete tear of your rotator cuff tendon, respectively.

Sports like tennis, golf, racquetball, and weight lifting can also cause you to have impingement of the rotator cuff. The symptoms are pain, pinching, stiffness in your shoulder. Overhead activities aggravate the pain and problem. In other people, you may feel a nagging pain even when you are not using your shoulder. The pain can be located in the anterior or lateral aspect of the shoulder joint, but in some cases it can be nonspecific in location. When you try to elevate your shoulder to the side of your head and it has no strength and drops back down, that usually is a sign that you have a tear in your rotator cuff tendon. The treatment usually allows you to return to tennis or other sports without limitations. Failure to get better will then require your doctor to offer you injections, order MRI scans and even surgery in cases that do not get better. Most patients do not require surgery, most patients get cured with rest, ice, medications and an exercise program to strengthen the muscles around the shoulder joint. Patients with complete rotator cuff tears usually require surgery to be able to return to tennis without pain. Dr. Moya is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in knee and shoulder surgery. He completed his doctoral fellowship at Harvard University, receiving his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (Robert Wood Johnson Medical School). Dr. Moya completed his orthopaedic residency at the University of Puerto Rico. He practices at the South Florida Institute of Sports Medicine located in Pembroke Pines at 17842 NW 2nd Street, (954) 430-9901 with additional office locations in Weston at 1600 Town Center Blvd., Suite C, (954) 3895900 and Tamarac at 7447 N. he integration of Implantology in the practice

of Oral Surgery is experiencing an extraordinary success rate of late. Therefore, now is the time to consider seeing an oral surgeon to have him place dental implants to replace missing teeth. Dental implants were introduced about thirty years ago. Theses cone shaped implants (similar in appearance to what is used today), were the result of many years of extensive research and numerous clinical trials. In the decades since their introduction, dental implants have become more sophisticated and innovative and thus enjoy a very high rate of success. In addition, bone deficiencies, which once thwarted solid Implantology, has been overcome by various products, which can fill theses defects and deficiencies. Irradiated cow bone, and non-bone replacement materials, along with biological membranes have been developed which improve and encourage bone growth and also osseointergration (growth-union of the implant to the jaw bone) of titanium implants. This cutting edge dental technology available to the oral surgeon has added significantly to the long-term success of implants, eliminating previous challenges. Yet another progressive step in having an oral surgeon install dental implants is the possibility of an “immediate” implant following the extraction of a tooth. Provided that the extraction site has adequate bone, or the site is amenable to bone replacement for osseo-integration, the patient can leave the oral surgeons office well on their way to tooth replacement. As a matter of fact, some implants placed into dense enough bone can have crowns installed immediately, in lieu of the previous requisite of 2 ½ to 5 months for osseo-integration. Dental implants have proven useful in the Prosthodontics (making false teeth) and Orthodontics (braces). In the past, getting a denture to fit comfortably has been problematic. Having an oral surgeon place implants in a denture wearer’s mouth can stabilize them and assure a solid fit, thus reducing or even eliminating the need for creams and linings to make poorly fitting dentures more comfortable. In these cases, patients have proven to be uniformly pleased with the outcome. In orthodontic cases, the oral surgeon places an implant as an anchor to adjacent teeth that need to be moved. This avoids putting stress on those adjacent teeth and avoids root resorbtion (loss of tooth structure as a result of movement). Consequently, the success of orthodontia is aided by the use of dental implants. It is important to note that getting dental implants placed by an oral surgeon has an additional benefit. Most oral surgeons are trained and state licensed to perform Impantology (and most other procedures) under general anesthesia or sedation, along with local anesthetic (novocaine). Success of dental implants and over all dental health is enhanced by a patient’s good oral hygiene. Implantology has been one of the greatest breakthroughs in dentistry, in the hands of a qualified and experienced oral surgeon. Given the advances in the procedure, NOW is the time to have your needs evaluated and enjoy the confidence that a healthy mouth and smile will give you! Dr. P. Stuart Seider’s practice is located at Broward Oral Surgery Associates, 3157 North University Drive, Suite #104. For information, call 954-431-1600 or visit www. browardoralsurgery.com.

everal years ago, Broward County was con-

sidered ground zero for prescription drug abuse. Unfortunately, we became a hotspot for out-of-town visitors who would come to our county for the sole purpose of purchasing and abusing powerful pain medication. With an increase of illegitimate pain clinics dubbed “pill mills”, we experienced a major influx in the supply of dangerous narcotic medications. Throughout the last several years, increases in prescription drug abuse and its related criminal activity have brought enormous challenges to our community. In response to this rising epidemic, the Broward Sheriff’s Office acted quickly by imposing a multi-faceted approach to combat the problem, known as Operation Medicine Cabinet (OMC). The three-pronged OMC program focused on increased law enforcement efforts to target pill mills and prescription drug traffickers, educational presentations to inform the public about the dangers of prescription drugs and drug “take back” events to encourage the safe disposal of unused, expired or unwanted medication. Over the years, our efforts to combat this problem have been fruitful, and I am pleased at the success of the OMC program. Through proactive law enforcement efforts, we have been successful in shutting down many of the pill mills that once plagued our community. As a result, the title that once haunted Broward County no longer remains. On average in Florida, eight people die every single day as a result of prescription drug abuse. As a parent, it is hard for me to fathom that many of these victims are our youth. Aside from law enforcement, efforts to curb the problem need to include education. The OMC educational presentations given throughout our community have helped to reveal an eye-opening reality about the life-threatening dangers of abusing and misusing prescription medications. It is important for parents, grandparents and friends to know that prescription drugs are easier for kids to get than illicit drugs. Most of the time, these drugs are obtained from their parents’ or grandparents’ medicine cabinets, friends’ homes, internet pharmacies or from classmates. Seventy percent of teens have reported that they get their prescription drugs from someone close to them. To date, these presentations have been given to more than 10,000 people, including school children, parents, senior citizens and educational and healthcare professionals. Many people do not know what to do with old or expired medication, or what to do if a loved one passes away, and they are left with a cabinet full of powerful medications. The prescription drug “take back” component of the OMC program has provided a means for the public to rid their medicine cabinets of unused, unwanted or expired medication. The benefit of the “take back” is two-fold, providing for the safe disposal of these medications and making them less accessible to our youth. To date, the Broward Sheriff’s Office has collected more than one million pills during our monthly “take back” events. While we have seen tremendous success as a result of the OMC initiative, we know this program alone will not solve the problem. We will continue to stay proactive in our enforcement efforts and implementation of innovative programs. As a Broward County resident, I also encourage you to do your part and get involved. Monitor your medicine cabinets. Talk with your child about drug use. Attend one of our drug “take back” events to rid your home of unused, unwanted or expired medications. As we continue to move forward, I believe that by working together, we will combat this problem to help make Broward County a safer place to live and work. Stay safe! The Broward Sheriff’s Office will also be participating in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, from 10am – 2pm on April 27. Prescription medications will be accepted at 17300 Royal Palm Boulevard, Weston. For information, visit www.sheriff.org/omc.

Summer Fun Starts With Camp Sagemont By Stacey Bomser

C

amp Sagemont has been delivering

spectacular summer experiences for longer than its campers have been alive. Now celebrating its 17th season, Camp Sagemont continues to evolve to provide new and exciting experiences for its campers. From tiny tots to teens, there is truly something for everyone this summer.

JoAnn Laskin, Executive Director for Camp Sagemont, has been actively involved with the camp since it first opened in 1997. She has seen and helped it grow from a traditional day camp to offering a selection of specialty camp programs from sports to science to the stage. Laskin shares her thoughts on what makes Camp Sagemont so special and what’s Art campers “loved” the during a field trip to in store for campers exhibit the Young At Art Museum. this summer.

along with our themes. The campers love our on campus pool run by The Swim Academy. All of our campers, whether in traditional day camp or one of our specialty camps, enjoy building lasting friendships and memories while trying new activities and developing new interests.

How and why do you always incorporate field trips into your camp programs? Camp

summer, in addition to our traditional day camp and popular adventure camp, art camp, science camp, sports camp and travel camp, we will be offering zoo camp, voice/performance camp, marine camp and cheer camp. The campers in each camp will benefit from a hands-on approach through the exposure of field trips, presenters and performances.

trips and exploration and other camps have field trips once a week to locations that tie into the programs’ activities. Our campers visit places like the Morakami Museum, the Venetian Pools, Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale, Biscayne Nature Center, airboat rides, water parks, and Marlins games.

How does Camp Sagemont come up with these original programs? We have many

which we don’t announce until camp begins. We always introduce new special events to go

Some students need academic support over the summer. What is offered in the Summer School program? We are very proud

of our academic Summer School program because these are hard to find in Broward County. We cater to students who want to get enrichment or remediation to help bridge the learning gap that can occur for students over the summer. Some students attend just summer school and Camp Sagemont’s youngest others choose to parcampers always enjoy showing their team spirit ticipate in a summer during Color Wars. school and day camp combination. In addition, we offer an English Learning camp for students who are just being introduced to the English language.

Why did Camp Sagemont expand from a traditional day camp program to providing so many specialty camps? We found that our campers have so many diverse interests that we wanted to create a variety of options for them to grow and expand into. There is something offered for everyone from preschool through 8th grade. In addition, our camp programs are geared towards active involvement while having fun!

tors attend universities or are graduates and have majored in the field such as marine biology or zoology. Our cheer instructor currently coaches cheerleading for her school as well as the Sagemont School cheerleaders.

Camp Sagemont is for students through middle school. Do you offer a program for

interest from parents, we are offering a limited bus service this summer for the first time serving the areas of Miramar to Plantation. The service will be based on demand and parents can call the camp for details.

Anything else you would like readers to know about Camp Sagemont? Our campers have come to know and love their summers with us. We are always changing things up and adding new experiences. We are very excited about introducing more new programs geared to appeal to middle schoolers. We want the campers and their parents to know that our daily activities, adventures and travels provide a great opportunity for building friendships plus exploring South Florida’s attractions in an easy, safe and affordable environment.

Camp Sagemont begins the week of June 10th and runs through August 9th. Camp hours are 9am to 3:30pm, with early care and after care available. All programs are held on Sagemont’s Lower School Campus in Weston. To learn more about Camp Sagemont visit www.campsagemont.com or call (954) 384-1894.
