Happy Valentine’s Day!

I

t’s hard to believe that it’s February already. It

seems like just yesterday we were decorating the house for the holidays. Now it’s time to focus on another holiday – Valentine’s Day. This is the day we celebrate the special person, or people, in our lives – be that your spouse, partner or children. While we contemplate which gift we should purchase for them, we need to remember that the monetary value of a gift is a secondary notion. What’s most important is that the gift comes from the heart -- and there is no better gift than spending valuable time with the ones we love. This Valentine’s Day, be sure to give from your heart and enjoy each others company.

TAG Level 4 Team Wins USAG State Championship For the second year in a row the TAG USA team wins the 2012-13 USAG Florida State Championships for Level 4 Gymnastics. Over 60 gyms competed for the Level 4 Florida championship on December 8-9, 2012 in Manatee, Florida. The TAG USA team beat other gymnastics powerhouses from Tampa Bay, Orlando, and Miami and achieved the top all around team score amongst all participating gyms in these championships. No other Palm Beach or Broward gymnastics center finished in the top tier. Just a few weeks ago TAG USA won the 2012-2013 State Championship for Level 3 Gymnastics, also for the second year in a row. This makes TAG USA the only gym that won multi-level State Champions two years in a row Owner Michael Zoldan believes that TAG USA’s quality of team coaches and hard working athletes has made the Weston gym “one of the best in Florida”. “We always wanted to build a program that emulated the top Florida gyms found in Central Florida.” Head Coach Leesa van Werven

The back-to-back State Championships has made TAG USA into the Home of Champions. Head Coach Leesa van Werven, a key contributor to her athlete’s success, loves to see the hard work and dedication of her gymnast’s pay off.

Cooper City Couples to Say I Do…Again By Debby Teich

V

alentine’s Day is a time for love

and romance. More than 25 Cooper City couples are expected to celebrate the holiday by renewing their vows during the “Say I Do…Again” ceremony. Mayor Suellen Fardelmann officiated Cooper City’s first “Say I Do…Again” in 1989, when four Cooper City couples re-affirmed their vows in a group ceremony in front of friends and family. Over the years the number of couples in attendance has grown. Some come to celebrate their first anniversaries, while others come back every year and plan their Valentine’s celebration around it. “We encourage our resident couples to join us in an evening filled with memories, love and laughter,” said Lynda Good, event coordinator. The free event will be held on Feb. 14, at 6:30 p.m., at Cooper City Hall. Couples must live in Cooper City to participate. The complimentary ceremony includes a walk down the aisle, flowers, photo under the wedding arch, customary cutting of the cake, refreshments and a Certificate of Re-Affirmation. Some couples come dressed in their wed-

ding attire, while others are more casual. As each couple is called up individually, they will reveal how many years they have been married, where they met, how many children they have, and other information. There will be a table filled with each couple’s wedding photo. The couples will receive coupons and prizes from local businesses. This will be the 17th year that David and Marian Smalley will affirm their vows at the event. On April 29, they will celebrate their 31st wedding anniversary. “Valentine’s Day is so romantic,” said Marian. “We confess our love for each other and look towards another year of romance.” The couple has two adult children, David, 26 and Olivia, 24. Marian says that there are several secrets to a good marriage. “You have to be grateful, have goals, and be patient.” Participants must be residents of Cooper City and sign up by Feb. 11. For information, call 954434-4300, ext. 233 or visit www.coopercityfl.org. This will be the 17th year that David and Marian Smalley will affirm their vows at the Say I Do…Again event.

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”

Dear Friend,

well write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 02/28/13) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $45. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell YOu THAT YOu OR AnY OTHeR peRSOn ReSpOnSIBLe FOR pAYMenT HAS THe RIgHT TO ReFuSe TO pAY, cAnceL pAYMenT, OR Be ReIMBuRSeD FOR TReATMenT, WHIcH IS peRFORMeD AS A ReSuLT OF AnD WITHIn 72 HOuRS OF ReSpOnDIng TO THe ADveRTISeMenT FOR DIScOunTeD, OR ReDuceD Fee FOR SeRvIce, eXAMInATIOn, OR TReATMenT.

I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the right. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You Benefit from an Amazing Offer-Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as

communication devices that are registered. They can be sent using a landline, cell phone, e-mail, text message, fax, pager, and more. If you do not confirm receipt of the message, the system will try to reach your second contact number or email. The system will continue trying to contact you until it receives a confirmation. The success of the service depends on people signing up with their most recent contact information. Registering is easy and only takes a few minutes. Visit www.davie-fl.gov and click on the Davie Citizen Alert button on the home page of the website. Residents and businesses with traditional listed landlines have already been included in the system. You may use the registration link to include additional ways to contact you or to opt out. Any information that is provided will be kept strictly confidential and will not be used for any other purpose.

afety is one of the top concerns of the Town

of Davie. The Town recently implemented the Everbridge SmartGIS System to inform residents and businesses about severe weather, evacuation orders, boil water orders, and other Davie emergencies, issues and disasters as they happen. Officials hope that the early warnings will help save lives and property. The Town will also use the system in non-emergency situations to relay details of important events and activities, such as meetings and street closures. Everbridge is an industry-leading interactive communication and mass notification solutions provider that helps organizations save lives, manage critical activities, and improve the efficiency of daily operations. The new system will allow the Town of Davie to contact thousands of individuals in just a few minutes. It went into effect on January 1st and replaces Code Red. You can receive notifications about emergencies that may affect your home, your parents’ home, your workplace, and your child’s school, as long as those locations are within the boundaries of the Town of Davie. Messages will be sent to all standard voice and text

To sign up for Town of Davie Alerts at www. davie-fl.gov and click on the Davie Citizen Alert button on the home page. Individuals with disabilities who need assistance, can register by calling the Housing and Community Development Department at 954-797-1173.

As president, Gina will lead the organization’s many projects, including the FLITE Center (provides resources for kids who age out of the foster care system) and Healthfully Ever After (a program for 2nd grade students to promote healthy lifestyles and reduce childhood obesity). She will encourage members to participate in “Done-In-A-Day” projects that assist other nonprofits, such as the Susan B. Anthony Center, Pantry of Broward, Feeding South Florida and Salvation Army. She will also help promote the 13th Annual Riverwalk Run fundraiser, held on March 23, which will take runners and walkers on a 5-mile or 5k course through downtown Fort Lauderdale. It also includes a shorter course for children. The JLGFL has created several of Broward County’s top charitable organizations. Some of them include: Jack and Jill Children’s Center (1942), Henderson Mental Health Center (1954), Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale (1958), Museum of Discovery and Science (1974), Kids in Distress (1978), SOS Children’s Village (1988) and OUR House (1993). “It always amazes me to see how much a group of women can accomplish when they come together and work toward a common goal,” said Gina. “It is so exciting to be a part of it.”

to community service since she was a child. In her new role as president of the Junior League of Greater Fort Lauderdale (JLGFL), she will have an opportunity to continue to make a difference. Founded in 1937, the JLGFL is a non-profit organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism and improving the community through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Members range in age from their 20’s to 80’s. Some work full-time or part-time, while others stay at home or are retired. Although the group is very diverse, all of the members have one thing in common. They are all interested in making the world a better place. Gina has been an active member of the JLGFL since 2004. After moving to South Florida, she joined as a way to serve the community and meet other like-minded women. She has served on the Board of Directors for the past four years. She has chaired several committees, helped create a new website, worked on the newsletter, and much more. “I love everything that the Junior League is doing for the community,” said Gina “I have learned so much from working Gina Reynen, president of the JLGFL on all of the different projects and met so many incredible people.” Since joining, Gina has changed jobs, gotten married, had children, and been The JLGFL will be accepting applications for new members through April. Cooper City Mom Wins Top Awards for Interactive Children’s Book By Debby Teich

new places. Decisions may lead to a glorious victory or a desperate end. When the story is over, the reader can return to the beginning to make different choices and explore new paths.” Teachers and parents have been using the app as another way to get kids to read. “We know that kids love the visual enhancements on their phones, IPads and other hightech devices,” said Julie. “Brush of Truth uses the magic of technology to encourage them to read in a way that fits their generation. Book apps like this are an emerging trend in children’s literacy, because they combine a full-text reading experience with the interactive nature of a game.” Julie has already started working on her second book, Brush of Secrets. She recently received a fan letter from a little girl in Australia who is anxiously awaiting its release. The girl wrote that she enjoyed Brush of Truth and wants to see what happens with the brush in New Orleans. “To hear that kids are enjoying the story – that’s just the highest praise there is,” said Julie.

ulie Landry Laviolette has always been

an avid reader. When the Cooper City mom of two noticed that most young children did not share her passion, she decided to take action. She introduced Brush of Truth, an interactive children’s book designed to engage kids in reading. The book, which is a cross between an eBook and a game, has won numerous awards. It recently won the top award in Creative Child Magazine’s Apps and Media category. It also received recognition from several educational app review sites. It has been named a “Recommended iPad Book App for Older and Reluctant Readers Ages 8-12” by Digital Storytime, and one of “6 Interactive Book Apps to Get Kids Excited About Reading” by Tecca. The book tells the story of two tweens who find an enchanted paintbrush made by a medieval sorcerer. The app lets the user choose what happens next in the story. It has 125 pages of story and illustrations, 65 decision points and 20 possible endings. “There are multiple paths and endings, adding suspense to the story,” said Julie. “The reader faces challenges, solves riddles, investigates mysteries, meets curious characters and explores thrilling

Health & Wellness

Hormones & Marriage By Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette

W

hen you said “I Do,” you never imagined that

years later you would lose all interest in a sex life and find your “soul mate” unattractive and irritating. You find yourself constantly battling fatigue, as everything you do requires so much effort. You don’t even know who you are when you hear yourself talking, as the mood swings consume your whole being. How can you possibly maintain a happy marriage when you’re not even happy with the person you are becoming? Can you control this or is this simply a normal progression of married life and you just have to deal with it? I am here to say NO. You absolutely don’t need to live this life. There are options. A lot of the symptoms stated above I hear on a daily basis, and many women and men are suffering unnecessarily. I am here to tell you that you can recoup that basic marital foundation – intimacy. You can get rid of the fatigue and mood swings and become the person you were when you first married. The solution is simple….it’s all about hormones. As we age, our hormones start decreasing and, as a result, symptoms appear. The most common symptoms are lack of sex drive, fatigue, depression, weight gain in the mid-section, inability to multi-task and think clearly, mood swings, and hot flashes. All these symptoms can not only impact you as an individual, but obviously your relationship. A simple blood test is all that is needed to determine if you are lacking hormones. Once the deficiencies are identified, an individualized plan should be created to maximize your hormone levels. The type of hormone chosen - synthetic versus bio-identical - is imperative. Bio-identical hormones mimic exactly your own body’s molecules versus their synthetic counterparts, with known cancer-causing agents within their chemical structure. The methods of bio-identical hormone delivery range from sub-lingual liquids to creams, and from injections to pellets. Most importantly, the delivery method must be constant, with no high peaks and lows. All methods of delivery, except the pellet, unfortunately give you inconsistent absorption of hormones. When you place a cream on the skin in our hot humid climate of South Florida, how much are you exactly absorbing and what is wearing off? When you place the liquid hormone underneath the tongue or give an injection, you have immediate absorption, but what is left to be absorbed the remainder of the day? The absorption rates with these methods are extremely unpredictable, making it really hard to manage the symptoms and regain control of your life. The bio-identical hormone pellet provides a consistent flow of hormone delivery. The pellet, which is less than the size of a tic-tac, is inserted underneath the skin. Therefore, the body has 24 hour access to the hormone, using it as needed. The pellets last up to 6 months, thus avoiding the hassle of taking daily medications. The absorption is predictable and monitored with lab values. The benefits are seen as quickly as five days. Some of the testimonials I have heard are: “Thank you for giving me my wife back,” “I am more centered as a human being” and “I haven’t been this intimate with my husband since our honeymoon.” So you decide: is bio-identical hormone pellet therapy right for you? Can your marriage be improved? Call us to schedule a free consultation 954-384-8989. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is Board Certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner. They both specialize in Functional Medicine, Bio-Identical Hormone Pellet Therapy and IV Nutrition Therapy. Their practice, Bellissimo Medical Spa, is located at 2665 Executive Park Drive, Suite #3, in Weston.

Davie’s Actors Community Theatre Presents Crossing Delancey By Debby Teich

T

his month, Davie residents can experi-

ence live theater right in their own neighborhood. The Actors Community Theatre of Davie will present Crossing Delancey by Susan Sandler. Performances are February 15, 16, 22 & 23 at 8pm and February 16, 17, 23 & 24 at 2pm. The show is about a single Jewish woman, who longs to be a part of the intellectual literary scene. She is, however, tethered to her roots on the Lower East Side, where her old-fashioned grandmother is forever trying to fix her up. She has her eye on a handsome brooding author, but her grandmother enlists the help of a local matchmaker to fix her up with a quiet Jewish man who runs a pickle stand in the neighborhood. Soon she must decide what it is she really wants out of life and what love really means to her. Since 2000, ACT has provided residents with a way to enjoy local theater. It all started when the Davie Town Council requested that an ad appear in the Town’s local paper asking for thespians. Several people responded and became the nucleus for the Town’s first community theatre. The volunteer group is funded by the Town of Davie and run by its Board of Directors. The board’s script committee selects three shows to

produce every year and then sends out audition notices throughout South Florida. The director chooses cast members, who have ranged in age from 6 to more than 80. Some are first-time actors, while others have been acting for years. The plays are performed over two consecutive weekends and often sell-out. “The plays are always very professionally done and you cannot beat the price,” said Alice Cooperton, who has attended many of the productions. The last show of the 2012-13 season will be The Shadow Box by Michael Cristofer. It takes place in cottages on the grounds of what, at the time of the play’s debut, is described as a hospital; in practice, we would probably refer to it today as a hospice facility. The play focuses on three patients and their interactions with the families. Performances are May 10, 11, 17 & 18 at 8pm and May 11, 12, 18 & 19 at 2pm. All productions are held at the Davie Pine Island Multi-purpose Center, 3801 S. Pine Island Rd. Tickets are $12 at the door; $10 in advance or $8 for groups of 10 or more. For information, call 954-473-0372 or 954-797-1153, send an email to actofdavie1999@ yahoo.com or visit www.davie-fl.gov.

Flamingo Elementary Students Plant Gardens By Debby Teich

S

tudents at Flamingo Elementary planted a vegetable garden

at the beginning of the school year and they have already started harvesting crops. “The first time I pulled out a radish from the ground, it sounded like a Justin Bieber appearance,” said Wendi Librach, art specialist who has been spearheading the effort. “The kids were so excited!” Librach has always been passionate about gardening and watching things grow from seeds. “By planting the garden with my students, they have a better visual understanding of what a flower or vegetable looks like and can incorporate that into their artwork,” said Librach. For the last five minutes of each period, Librach takes her art students outside to take notes and create monthly sketches of the plants and flowers in their garden journals. “Sometimes they ask to spend more time in the garden and less time on their art projects,” said Librach. “That is okay. It all ties in eventually.” The garden contains lettuce, corn, tomatoes, beans, peppers, carrots, radishes and basil. The kids have sampled several items from the garden and are learning to make healthier choices. Librach says that the students are more willing to try new things, because they have watched them grow. “I think that children need to see where our food

really comes from,” said Librach. Students also planted a butterfly habitat. This month, they will add a puddling station, where the butterflies can bathe. “The students love seeing the caterpillars come to feast on our milkweed plants,” said Librach. “We watched one grow and then saw it build its crysallis. When the kids see a Monarch butterfly, they want to know if it was from our caterpillar. They also love the wildflowers.” The school’s ecology club helps to maintain the gardens. They meet once a month after school to sow the seeds, label the garden, provide new plants to attract butterflies, add fresh mulch, and more. There are 12 members in the club and most of them are in fifth grade. Flamingo Road Nursery in Davie, in partnership with the Town of Davie Youth Education and Safety (Y.E.S.) Trust Your Pet’s Care to All Friends Animal Clinic By Stacey Bomser

Y

our pet is an important part of your

family, so you want to make sure it receives the best care possible. All Friends Animal Clinic is a full-service veterinary facility specializing in dogs and cats. All Friends Animal Clinic is run by Eduardo Bernal, DVM. His love for companion animals and his dedication to their humane treatment moved him to study veterinary medicine. He graduated from veterinary school in 1992 and for the last 20 years has dedicated his life to supporting the well-being of pets. He has practiced in South Florida since 2004. Dr. Bernal offers a personalized approach to the treatment of each of his patients and believes that pet owners play an integral role in the health and wellness of their pets. “Pet owners are an important part of the health team,

for your pet as a valuable member of our family.” Dr. Bernal is highly experienced in all areas of small animal internal medicine, including radiology, surgery and dentistry. He has an interest in dermatology, as well as alternative therapies and preventive care. Just as you see your doctor for your annual check-up, your pet also needs to visit the veterinarian regularly. Dr. Bernal says this is important for its health and yours. “Some parasites and infectious diseases such as hook worms and rabies can be transmitted to humans. A regular pet medical examination and vaccinations can keep your pet and your family healthy.” All Friends Animal Clinic also wants to ensure that all

and they should be able to communicate their expectations and needs to the veterinarian,” explains Dr. Bernal. “Communication with your vet and vet’s staff is important, especially when it comes to a sick pet. In an emergency or in case of illness, it is always important to get all the symptoms and information as early as possible. Open communication helps the doctor and the pet nurses provide better service to you and your pet.” All Friends Animal Clinic is well known for its exceptional service. In fact, it was voted Best Full Service Animal Clinic in Best of Weston 2012 and Dr. Bernal was voted Best Veterinarian in the Davie Reader’s Choice. It’s not surprising that Dr. Bernal and All Friends Animal Clinic receive such rave reviews. “We are committed to providing high quality care at affordable prices within a family atmosphere,” states Dr. Bernal. “We care

Davie Elementary’s Composers Club Creates Mini-Musical By Debby Teich

W

hen Davie Elementary’s

music specialist, Katina Dziewiatkowski-Mansilla, formed the Composer’s club in the fall, she thought that the students would just write a few songs to perform at the school. After winning a $500 grant from the Town of Davie Youth Education and Safety (Y.E.S.) Advisory Board, the 35 club members were able to accomplish much more. “When I was given the application for the safety grant, I took it to the kids and asked them about writing a song about school safety,” said Dziewiatkowski- Members of the Composers Club Mansilla. “Immediately, the kids wanted to branch out and write a whole play about the different aspects of safety that students need to know, both at home and at school. The safety grant was the catalyst for this entire project.” She used the funds to purchase and repair instruments for the production. Dziewiatkowski-Mansilla sees all of the composers during music class, where they work on different aspects of reading and performing music with their grade level class. Club members also meet once a week before school to work on the safety project. The students, in grades 1st to 5th, have been involved in all aspects of the play, from the actual writing to staging, creating sets and even acting in the play.

28 DTT ALL 0213.indd 28

“The club allows them to create original work,” said DziewiatkowskiMansilla. “Performing someone else’s work is an incredible experience, but having the opportunity to perform or to watch someone perform something that you created on your own is truly exceptional. It is amazing to see what kids are capable of when they are given an opportunity to be creative.” The play addresses safety issues related to the playground, walking to school, riding a bike, visiting a department store, stranger danger and more. It teaches the students what can happen if they do not follow the basic rules of safety, such as wearing a bike helmet, stopping at a stop sign and talking on the phone in the car. At the end of each skit, a “police officer” reminds the audience about the importance of following safety rules, as well as the possible consequences. Students in the composers club met with an actual police officer to research ideas for the play. Dziewiatkowski-Mansilla says that the enthusiasm of the club members has spilled over into the entire school population. Students throughout the school are anxious to see the script and will soon begin auditioning for parts. In May, they will perform the musical for all of the students, as well as for parents and the community.

Some Things to Consider By Evan Baron

I

t is difficult to try and sit down and write an

article this month without thinking about the events in Newtown Connecticut that occurred on December 14th. There has been much discussed about gun control and mental health issues. Hopefully, by the time this article is released, there will be some progress in these areas. As a family law attorney, one of the issues which somewhat jumped out at me was the fact that the shooters parents were divorced. It seems that in many instances when a young adult goes on a rampage like this, he/she comes from a broken home. I certainly am not suggesting that children of divorce households are more likely to be involved in this type of behavior, but I do think that continuing issues between the parents does lead to a greater likelihood that a child can suffer from some emotional problems. Please understand, I am not a psychologist and I am not suggesting that I am qualified to make any diagnosis, but approximately 30 years of practicing family law has allowed me to make several observations.

From what I read, the shooter in Newtown lived with his mother and had no contact with his father for years. Perhaps that scenario had nothing to do with his mental state, but it certainly did not suggest a loving relationship. It is important that parents going through a divorce always remember how their actions will affect their children. Unfortunately, all too often parents focus on getting even with their spouse and forget that the children are “in the middle” of the conflict. It is important for a child to know that they can rely on both parents for love and support. All too often this is not the case. Children are not to be used as “pawns” in a divorce. The law in Florida is very clear in that a parent who may be behind in the payment of child support cannot be deprived of time with his/her child(ren). In addition, child support cannot be withheld because a parent is preventing the other parent from exercising his/her time sharing. In spite of the possible financial issues which may be in controversy, time with each parent is essential. It is no longer uncommon for each parent to have equal time with a child. Unfortunately, often parents resist what is best for a child due to possible financial consequences. In Florida, one of the factors which affect child support is the number of overnight visits each parent may have. Instead of focusing on what is best for the child, it becomes an issue of how much will I pay or how much will I receive? Unfortunately, sometimes parents continue this battle long after the Final Judgment has been entered. Post judgment battles concerning the children can be just as damaging. I strongly urge parents to provide counseling for their children. Even the most “peaceful divorce” has an effect on the children. Just remember, a divorce isn’t only about you! If you know anyone who has questions about the above issue have them call my office for a free consultation at 954-385-9160.

over the last several years, there are still more than 500,000 skiing injuries in the United States every year. Though foot and ankle injuries are becoming less common, knee ligament sprains and upper extremity injuries are extremely prevalent. We have also seen an elevated number of injuries involving the head and neck region, as well as the lower spine. After performing extensive research and giving multiple lectures on this topic, I think there are a number of pearls of wisdom to remember during skiing. Pre-season conditioning programs that include strength training focusing on flexibility and agility are recommended to all skiers to help reduce the incidence and severity of injuries. Though skiing instruction at the time of travel may lower the incidence of injuries, more specific injury prevention courses prior to going on a ski trip have been proven to lower the incidence of injuries.

Remember to acclimate yourself with rest, proper hydration and a high carbohydrate diet, as these elements will protect against fatigue. Most injuries occur within the first few days of skiing because most individuals progress very quickly to a high demand level of activity. To prevent injury progress slowly, avoid prolonged periods of rest and stop skiing prior to fatigue. Also keep in mind that late afternoon skiing has the highest incidence of injury mostly due to changes in skiing conditions. When looking for the appropriate equipment, consider age, height, weight and level of expertise, as beginner skiers should even consider a helmet. Assure proper binding adjustments, as failure to do so has been associated with a higher occurrence of skiing related injuries. Falling backwards (sitting on your skies) may often result in significant injury. Always try to keep your knees flexed and remain balanced on your skies. These are a few tips for all skiing enthusiasts of this season. Remember that safe skiing is always fun. Al DeSimone, MD, is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon. The Key to a Successful Loan Modification By Omar J. Arcia, Esq., Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

T

here are countless homeowners accepting loan modifications

in which their resulting payment is the same, and in some cases, actually higher than their original mortgage payment. Also, the resulting principal balance owed by these homeowners is far more than the home is worth, and even more than when they started the modification process. Still other homeowners end up losing their homes, because they are unable to complete a loan modification before the home is sold at public foreclosure auction. These homeowners were apparently unaware that the key to a successful loan modification is hiring an established law firm with an experienced loss mitigation department. First and foremost, every homeowner should know by now that just because you’ve applied for a loan modification does not mean that your lender will stop the foreclosure of your home. If you do not have proper representation in the foreclosure action, you risk losing your home before you can complete your loan modification. Despite what the bank representatives may tell you, the law firm representing the bank may have a different protocol to pursue the foreclosure of your home. We witness individuals in court lose their homes daily due to their refusal or inability to hire a qualified attorney to represent them. The attorneys at the Arcia Law Firm have been representing consumers in foreclosure defense cases for over 17 years, are familiar with all the available legal defenses in a foreclosure case, and have established credibility through years of successful practice throughout the State of Florida. In addition, the Arcia Law Firm is one of only very few law firms with a local in house loss mitigation (“loss mit”) department that works hand in hand with our clients and our litigation department to ensure that the loan modification is completed before the foreclosure. When preparing a loan modification application, it is important that it contain everything the bank’s loan negotiators are looking for, and that it be organized in a certain specific order. If items are missing, your application is passed and sent to the back of the queue to start from the beginning. This process can continue for months, and then you must convince a loan negotiator that you qualify under the various government and/or the bank’s own in-house loan modification programs. This complex cycle is where most homeowners get stuck for months without success, or where they become so frustrated they accept the first modification offered despite the terms being worse than the original loan (higher principal, higher payments, etc.). The key to breaking the vicious cycle, and obtaining a viable loan modification is to be properly represented by a law firm that has both an established foreclosure defense as well as a knowledgeable and experienced loss mitigation department. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new consumer-friendly DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home,” available for purchase on our website. If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a FREE copy during the appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team.

If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free consultation, or visit www.arcialawfirm.com for more information.

Six Common Mistakes By Ellen Latham

W

hat are six of the worst things you can do if you want to

ignite your body’s own fat burning furnace and get ripped in less time?

Mistake #1 – Doing Isolated Exercises. Doing isolated exercises, like bicep curls and tricep kick-backs, will not get you any significant results. These one-muscle-at-a-time moves simply don’t stimulate enough muscle fibers to build lean muscle or expend enough energy to maximize your calorie burn. Ideally, multi-joint exercises, like used in the ultimate workout, and large muscle group combinations dramatically accelerate your results.

TREAT YOURSELF TO A LITTLE EUROPEAN PAMPERING Complimentary wax for first time guests.

Mistake #2 – Working Out with Gym Weight Machines.

Fancy machines may make the gym look high end, but they are not effective. The problem is that the machines alter the way your body naturally moves and restrict your range of motion. This severely limits your ability to fully activate all of your muscle fibers, which means less fat burning and less muscle definition. The fastest results come from exercises that allow your body to move naturally with full range of motion. They skyrocket your metabolism and tone your entire physique.

Mistake #3 – Doing Long Bouts of Cardio. You need to do

© 2013 EWC You must be a state resident.

cardio if you want lose weight and burn fat, but there’s a right way and a wrong way to do your cardio workouts. If you have been pounding the pavement or the treadmill with nothing to show for it (except sore joints and a pair of stinky worn out sneakers), then interval training is the answer. The only way to burn fat requires oxygen. To a large degree, burning fat is dictated by oxygen delivered via the cardiovascular system. Intervals deliver a huge volume of oxygen in a short period of time. The Ultimate Workout at Ellen’s and the Orangetheory Workout improve your fat burning engine and teach you how to use intensity and volume. The goal is to increase your calorie burning capacity.

Mistake #4 – Doing Crunches and Sit Ups to Get a Six Pack. If you want washboard abs, doing traditional abs exercises like crunches and

sit-ups WILL NOT get you a six pack. In fact, doing any exercises that target your abs won’t get you a six pack. The key to getting sculpted abs is to burn off that stubborn layer of belly fat that’s hiding them!

Mistake #5 – Repeating the Same Workout Routines Over and Over. Repeating the same workouts over and over is a surefire way

to stop getting results. We’re creatures of habit and we tend to stick to things we’re familiar with and good at. However, when it comes to your workouts, if you want keep making progress and seeing changes you have to change the routines (like we do in the ultimate routines every day). The Ultimate Workout at Ellens Ultimate Workout and the Orangetheory workout make sure that none of the above take place in your hour workout.

Mistake #6 – Doing Long Workouts. Longer workouts DO NOT equal better or faster results. If you’ve been slaving away at the gym and your body isn’t visibly changing, you can’t do more of the same thing and expect results. Your body responds to quality, not quantity. Ellen’s Ultimate Workout is located at 5173 S. University Dr., in Davie. For information, call 954-472-9440 or visit www.ellensultimateworkout.com.

Get Heart Smart Your heart is only the size of your fist, but it is the strongest muscle in your body. It’s your body’s engine, and it deserves to be taken care of. Many people don’t realize that they are not living a healthy heart life. Learning the risks of heart disease can help you be your own heart health advocate.

What are the risk factors for heart disease? An estimated 17.1 million people die of cardiovascular diseases every year, according to the World Heart Federation. There are many risk factors that contribute to the development of heart disease. It is important to know that some risk factors, called “nonmodifiable risk factors,” cannot be changed, but some risk factors, called “modifiable risk factors,” can be controlled or treated. The more risk factors you have, the greater your chance of developing heart disease. And higher levels of each risk factor correlate with a higher risk for heart disease.

Modifiable risk factors Hypertension is the single biggest risk factor for stroke. It also plays a significant role in heart attacks. It can be prevented and successfully treated, but only if you have it diagnosed and stick to your recommended management plan. Abnormal blood lipid levels, that is high total cholesterol, high levels of triglycerides, high levels of low-density lipoprotein or low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol all increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. Changing to a healthy diet, exercise and medication can modify your blood lipid profile. Tobacco use, whether it is smoking or chewing tobacco, increases risks of heart disease. The risk is especially high if you started smoking when young, smoke heavily or are a woman. Stopping tobacco use can reduce your risk of heart disease significantly, no matter how long you have smoked. Non-smokers exposed to secondhand smoke increase their risk of heart disease as well.

Obesity or being overweight, especially if a lot of weight is located in your waist area, increases your risk for health problems, including high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, high triglycerides, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Viviana Navas, MD Type II diabetes is a major Cleveland Clinic Florida, risk factor for coronary heart Cardiologist disease and stroke. Having diabetes makes you twice as likely as someone who does not, to develop heart disease. If you do not control diabetes then you are more likely to develop heart disease at an earlier age than other people, and it will be more devastating. If you are a pre-menopausal woman, your diabetes cancels out the protective effect of estrogen and your risk of heart disease rises significantly.

What can you do you improve your heart health? Know the risk factors, and be sure to talk to you doctor about the ones that apply to you. Take action to change your lifestyle, and work to prevent your modifiable risk factors from compromising your heart health. For the past 18 consecutive years, U.S.News & World Report has named Cleveland Clinic in Ohio the top medical center in the United States for the treatment of heart disease. Cleveland Clinic Florida is proud to be part of such an impressive legacy of outstanding patient care. Cardiologists and cardiac surgeons offer the same integrated and “cutting-edge” services for the prevention, evaluation, and management of all forms of heart disease that are available in Ohio. This is just one of the reasons why patients travel from around the globe to Cleveland Clinic Florida, their destination for healthcare.

To schedule a consultation, please call 800-639-DOCTOR, or visit clevelandclinicflorida.org/heart.

Physical inactivity increases the risk of heart disease and stroke by 50%. People who don’t exercise regularly are 1.5 times more likely to develop heart disease. That’s why exercise is such an important part of a heart healthy lifestyle.

parrow is a 4-month-old, domestic short hair kitty.

He is named after the famous Captain Jack Sparrow, because of his matching mustache. His favorite person is his mommy. His favorite toy is an aluminum foil ball. He likes exploring boxes and receiving treats. He dislikes taking baths. His favorite thing to do is to take online classes with his mommy and watch the mouse move around the screen. Doctors Best Weight Loss and Wellness Center Helps Patients Look and Feel Their Best

D

By Debby Teich

r. Val Manocchio and the staff at

Doctors Best Weight Loss and Wellness Center help patients lose weight, live longer and enjoy a healthier life. Unlike one plan fits all clinics, they determine the cause of your weight gain and then offer you an individualized weight loss program. They work with adults and children who need to lose hundreds or simply the last stubborn ten pounds.

Dr. Val Manocchio answered some commonly asked questions about the Center.

Dr. Val Manocchio

What is your background? After graduat-

ing from the University of Miami School of Medicine, I trained in Surgery, OB/Gyn, and Anesthesiology. I have practiced conventional medicine for 24 years.

Why did you open Doctors Best? I became

very sick with blood clots to the lungs after surgery. In an effort to heal myself, I studied nutrition and wellness. Since then, I became a member of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians and completed fellowship training in Anti-aging and Regenerative Medicine. Today, I promote optimal health. I do not wait for diseases to appear and then treat them with drugs. My patients focus on prevention through nutrition, diet and exercise.

What are some of the weight loss plans you offer? We offer all of the standard diet

aids people want, such as diet pills, HCG, lipotropic shots, B12/MIC, protein shakes, bars, and more. However, Americans have proven that diets don’t work. We help patients make the necessary lifestyle changes they need in order to optimize their health and bring about the weight loss.

How do you decide which program is right for each patient? Being overweight is a medi-

cal problem that requires a medical solution. We

48 DTT ALL 0213.indd 48

develop a personalized weight loss strategy based on each patient’s preferences and health issues. We follow their progress and modify the plan as needed, based on their progress, fat loss, energy level and, of course, any hunger or discomfort.

How does Doctors Best’s program differ from similar programs? At Doctors Best, we believe

in enhanced patient care through a strong doctor-patient relationship. I follow a scientific, evidence-based approach and work closely with my patients to create a tailored, healthy plan. Weight loss visits are medically supervised. If I recommend a nutrient or medicine, such as fish oil or Vitamin D, I make sure patients know why they need it and what it does. We also offer Lap-Band adjustments or fills on all types of Adjustable Gastric Banding systems and fat dissolving injections, or Mesotherapy.

Rhonda Johnson lost 42 pounds.

What is the age range of your patients? My patients range in age from 6 to 87.

How much do most patients need to lose? Most of our patients come

to improve their overall health and usually need to lose a few pounds. I work with new moms or people who work out and can’t lose the last 15 pounds. I also treat people who have been heavy all their lives and come in now because it is beginning to seriously affect their health. We help patients optimize their health, while they are dieting and during follow ups.

Alex Astacio lost 55 pounds.

I’m very excited about our newest service, IV and IM Nutritional Therapy. High concentrations of B vitamins, Vitamin C and Vitamin D can prevent and treat a wide variety of diseases and conditions.

What cosmetic procedures do you offer?

What are factors that can affect our overall health and cause weight gain? There are

We have been offering cosmetic procedures for quite a while, including Botox, Dermal Fillers, spider vein treatment. We recently started working with a radio frequency device, which is FDA approved treatment for cellulite, waist reduction and skin tightening.

Do you offer bio-identical hormone balancing and testosterone replacement? Yes.

Do you offer free consultations? Yes. We offer free consultations for all services, including vein treatments, anti-aging and cosmetic treatments, hormone imbalance, IV and IM Nutritional Therapy.

many. Some of them are: stress, sleep difficulties, hormonal imbalances, lack of nutrition in our soil, toxins, and electromagnetic radiation.

We offer treatments for men and women. We treat adrenal fatigue, thyroid problems, PMS, menopause and low testosterone. Many of us, not just weight loss patients, need our metabolism checked, our thyroid optimized and blood sugar brought under control to feel well, sleep well and enjoy sex.

Do you offer IV and IM Nutritional Therapy?

Do you sell retail products? Yes. We have a retail protein and supplement store.
