Spring has Sprung

iving in South Florida, we do not get to experience the chang-

ing seasons, but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate them. As we usher in spring this month, let us take a moment to appreciate the new buds on the trees and warmer weather. With Spring Break almost here, why not spend some time as a family enjoying the many splendors of our sunshine state. Why shouldn’t we enjoy all the benefits of living in the so-called “Spring Break Capital of the World.” Where else can you see alligators in their natural habitat and Mickey and friends in their not-so-natural habitat – all in the same day? Where else can you get a sunburn at the beach during the day and endless entertainment all night? Where else can you go flats fishing on a secluded sandbar and cruising the intracoastal dining scene -- all on the same boat trip? Only in South Florida! On this happy note, let’s enjoy all that our state has to offer and let’s have some FUN.

Eat Pancakes and Find Bargains at Cooper City High School By Debby Teich

O

n March 24th, hundreds are expected

to start off the morning with a pancake breakfast before they spend the rest of the day hunting for bargains. They will be attending the Cooper City High School Key Club and Kiwanis Club of Cooper City 4th Annual Pancake Breakfast and Community Garage Sale, at Cooper City High School, from 7:30 a.m. to noon. It is an opportunity to enjoy food, fun, shopping, prizes and other exciting activities. The breakfast includes pancakes with a variety of toppings, as well as juice, coffee and hot chocolate. Tickets for the allyou-can-eat breakfast are $5; kids under 5 years old cost $2 and kids under 2 are free. There will be a free babysitting service, live auction, Chinese auction, face painting and more. After breakfast, shop for clothing, jewelry, furniture, books and other items. If you prefer to clean out your closets or garage, spaces are for rent for only $20 per parking spot and the seller keeps any money collected. The CCHS Key Club and Cooper City Kiwanis are also collecting items for an interclub garage sale table. Donations will be accepted from 5 to 7 p.m. on March 23rd at the front of the school or on the morning of the sale beginning at 6:30 a.m. Proceeds will benefit local charities and the CCHS Key Club, a student-led organization which provides its members

with opportunities to provide service, build character and develop leadership. Students volunteer for charities such as Becca’s Closet, Kids in Distress, Horses and Handicap and Ronald McDonald House. Proceeds will also help fund the Mike P. Kadel Scholarships, named for a charter Kiwanis member who passed away last year. CCHS students who are Key Club Members, plan to attend an accredited college or university, and display excellence in academics and service are eligible to win the two $500 scholarships. “These Cooper City children are the future leaders of our city,” said Lydia Kruger, president of the Kiwanis Club of Cooper City, which oversees, assists and mentors CCHS Key Club members. In the past, the Kiwanis club created an ad booklet to help raise money. This year, the club is selling Silver ($200) or Bronze ($100) sponsorships, which entitle the purchaser to a full color banner or laminated sign that will be displayed at the event. Rick Case Automotive has already purchased the Gold Sponsorship. Rita Zane attends the event every year. “The pancakes are always delicious,” said Zane. “I have also found some amazing bargains. And it is all for a great cause.”

Alan Paoli enjoys a pancake breakfast at the 2011 event.

Achieve Youthful Skin with a Natural Alternative - PRP

Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Reverse The Signs of Aging

By Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette

C

utting edge rejuvenation using your own blood

– Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), restores the skin’s appearance by increasing your own natural collagen production, making the skin look younger, firmer and more even. The technique, called Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), has been effectively used as a cosmetic procedure in Europe for years to rejuvenate and slow down the aging process of the face, neck and hands.

Benefits of Platelet Rich Plasma in cosmetics

Platelet Rich Plasma enriched treatments allow the use of your own cells to rejuvenate the skin to a much healthier state by releasing a number of proteins that accelerate healing and stimulate collagen growth. PRP injections are truly organic natural stimulators that contain concentrated growth factors, proteins and cytokines that will increase collagen and provide a gradual thickness to the skin. They are not fillers. Because PRP comes from your own blood, the treatment is extremely safe. There is no risk of allergic reaction. PRP can be used for the following: ▸▸ Improve forehead lines ▸▸ Improve the appearance of crow’s feet ▸▸ Improve smile lines ▸▸ Nasolabial folds

▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸

Vertical lip lines Marionette lines Full face rejuvenation Back of Hands Wrinkled Neck

PRP is the most natural rejuvenation treatment today. The results are a healthy younger looking skin. What is PRP? Platelet Rich Plasma is a technology that uses components of you own blood to regenerate your skin. Through this technique, it is possible to separate from your blood the PRP, the plasma that is enriched with growth factors, proteins, and platelets. Once injected into your skin, these substances will accelerate the healing process in that area. About two ounces of blood are drawn and put into a special PRP centrifuge. When completed, 10 cc (1/3 ounce) of pure PRP is drawn off and ready to be injected. How many treatments are needed for optimal results? For optimal results, it is recommended to have 2 to 3 treatments 4-6 weeks apart. PRP results last approximately 12 months and its desired effects usually take 3 weeks. To keep the skin looking vibrant, maintenance treatments are recommended every year depending on skin type. How’s the PRP treatment performed? On your first appointment with the doctor will go over your past medical history and discuss any medical conditions that may be relevant to this treatment. Once determined if you are a candidate, a small amount of your blood will be drawn to be separated in the special PRP centrifuge. Then, the PRP will be injected in the areas to be treated. Prior to injection, the area to be treated is numbed, making the procedure very comfortable. Most patients do not feel much sensation. How long is the recovery time? In most circumstances, there is little to no downtime associated with the treatment. There may be some redness present, but it fades within a day after the treatment. Minor bruising and swelling are possible, but they clear up within a week and can be concealed with cosmetics. Although normal activity can be resumed immediately, your face and skin should be protected from the sun. Call us to schedule a free consultation to address your needs and the results you would like to achieve at 954.384.8989. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is Board Certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner. They both specialize in Functional Medicine and Bio-Identical Hormone Pellet Therapy. Their practice is located at 2665 Executive Park Drive, Suite #3, in Weston.

Cooper City Residents Trained to Respond in a Disaster by Debby Teich

H

urricanes, tornadoes, plane

crashes and building collapses, as well as other natural disasters and large scale tragic events, are often reminders that we are all vulnerable. If Cooper City were to experience a true emergency, communication failures and road blockages might prevent people from accessing emergency services they have come to expect at a moment's notice through 911. It could take hours or even days for emergency personnel to reach everyone in need. A group of Cooper City residents is trained to respond in an emergency to help themselves, as well as their friends, families and neighbors until the proper help arrives. They are members of Cooper City’s Cooper City CERT members. Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), a FEMA program that educates citizens about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. CERT members use the training learned in the classroom and during exercises to assist others in their neighborhood or workplace. They are able to provide basic care that will help limit further injury to disaster victims and lessen the possibility of further damage to property. Cooper City implemented the CERT training program in 2004. Approximately 60

Cooper City men, women and teens, ages 18-85, are members of the team. “It is a great relief to know that we have CERT members who can help treat their neighbors if we are not able to respond,” said Richard Sievers, Assistant Chief of BSO Fire Rescue in the Cooper City District. The initial training consists of approximately 24 hours of free classes. When the residents graduate, they receive a backpack, which includes triage supplies like masks, gauze, splints, gloves, scissors and other items. The team meets monthly at the Cooper City Police Department to keep up with their training and learn additional skills. Along with the basic training, Cooper City’s CERT team has participated in mass casualty drills at the airport and local schools; made “ride-along” calls with local firefighters and paramedics; learned how to help rehabilitate firefighters who are fighting major fires; helped the elderly and special needs population with shutters during hurricane warnings; marched in parades and much more. They recently recorded the GPS locations of more than 2,000 fire hydrants in the city to help the fire department locate them more easily. “When the City is in need of manpower, we are there to help,” said Gregg Ross, team coordinator. Many Egg-Citing Ways to Celebrate Spring By Debby Teich

A

rea residents have many “egg-citing”

ways to celebrate the arrival of spring. The City of Cooper City will host egg hunts for young children and teens. The Town of Davie offers an egg hunt for young children combined with a multiethnic festival. On April 5, The City of Cooper City will sponsor a Twilight Egg Hunt for students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade, at the Community Center, from 7 to 9 p.m. When the teens arrive, they will participate in fun “egg games” inside until the time of the hunt. Once it is dark, organizers will turn off the park lights and participants can use their flashlights to search for eggs filled with chocolate and other special prizes. There is no charge for the evening of fun, but Cooper City teens must preregister by calling the Cooper City Recreation Dept. Teens must also bring their own baskets and flashlights. On April 7, the Cooper City Recreation Department will host an Egg-stravaganza for toddlers through 5th grade, at the Cooper City Sports Complex, at 10 a.m. sharp. The event is for Cooper City residents and their guests. The kids will hunt with others their own age and in grade school, while parents wait on the side. After the hunt, they can enjoy snow cones and special treats and get their favorite tattoo. There is no charge to participate and children should bring their own basket.

cultural or diversity displays.

On April 7, the Town of Davie will host the 32nd Annual Spring Festival, Egg Hunt & International Multi-Ethnic Festival, at Robbin’s Lodge, 4005 Hiatus Rd., from 9 a.m. to noon. The egg hunt begins at 10 a.m. sharp and ends shortly thereafter. Kids, 8 and under, who live and attend school in Davie, will be divided up by age as they search with their parents for more than 8,000 eggs. After the hunt, they can exchange the plastic eggs for candy. There will also be some special eggs hidden that the kids can trade for prizes. The International Multi-Ethnic Festival will feature diversified and multi-ethnic displays, cultural entertainment and hands-on activities for the entire family. There will be a variety of free activities including an animal farm, family hayride, giant slide, bounce houses, climbing wall and more. There will also be some activities at a small cost, such as sand art and pictures with Peter Cottontail. Local school multicultural clubs, diversity groups, and not-for-profit organizations are encouraged to participate in the festival by setting up

black and white furnishings and the knowledge they are in the Fort Lauderdale/Plantation hotel of choice. Travelers have always loved the Renaissance because of its central location in Broward County, just off I-595, which provides a quick link to all of the area’s other major highways. This convenient location makes the Renaissance Plantation a great launching spot for business travelers needing easy access to corporate clients as well as guests wanting to experience all South Florida has to offer. “We are the center of it all. We’re the perfect blend of luxury and location,” Elizondo commented. Named the Number One Hotel in Event Satisfaction Achievement in 2010 among all 82 Renaissance Hotels nationwide, the Renaissance Plantation is a highly

sought-after venue. “Many people don’t realize our hotel can provide the perfect setting for almost any special occasion, said Elizondo. With more than 10,000 square feet of event space, beautiful Cornerstone Ballroom, a lakeside terrace, catering and floral services, the experienced Event Management and Catering team at the Renaissance Plantation can help create an unforgettable event. Whether it is a wedding, Quinceanera, Bar/ Bat Mitzvah, banquet, corporate event, fundraiser, or intimate cocktail reception, Elizondo says the staff will work with any budget to make sure guests are getting the affair they’ve dreamed about. “We are easy to do business with,” said Elizondo. “We are well worth the dollar to spend for the product, the service levels, the

AMHS Wins Football Video Contest By Debby Teich

video contest that honors big moments in high school football. A fine arts department cinematography class at Archbishop McCarthy High School in Southwest Ranches recently entered a video in the contest and won. State Farm awards a total of $160,000 in prize money to schools across the U.S. and parts of Canada to use however they want. When AMHS Fine Arts Chairperson Robin Gleason learned about the contest, she began working with some of her students to create a video entry. McCarthy senior Robert Barreras led the project, along with fellow seniors Mathew Lowe, Cedric Coles, Ryan Cifuentes, Brandon Mulenfield and Cassie Cayon. The 45 second video, “A Football Play,” featured a football play from an AMHS football game. “McCarthy has a sense of family that is like no other school,” said Barreras. “This award would not from an AMHS Fine Arts Department Cinematography class pose with Janet have been possible without the project team and the incredible Students Fernandez, State Farm agent in Cooper City, Jose Soto, State Farm Public Affairs Specialist, AMHS Vice Principal Robert Siccone and Robin Gleason, AMHS Fine Arts Chairperson. faculty, especially Ms. Gleason." Embassy Creek Students Receive Pocket U.S. Constitutions By Debby Teich

W

hen students at Embassy Creek Elementary in Cooper City

begin learning about American history this month, they will already be well versed on the U.S. Constitution. In an effort to promote civics education, the Kiwanis Club of Cooper City donated pocket U.S. Constitutions to every student and teacher in the school’s seven fifth-grade classes. The idea of presenting students with a gift is not new for the Kiwanis. For nearly 100 years, the organization has been donating pocket dictionaries. Members of the Cooper City Kiwanis Club felt that most kids in their public schools had access to dictionaries at home, school or on the Internet, so they searched for an alternative. “We searched for a gift that would be relevant for today’s students, but still promote civic education,” said Bruce Blitman, attorney and member of the Cooper City Kiwanis Club. ”We suspect that most kids do not have a copy of the U.S. Constitution. If they do, chances are they have not read it.” Blitman visited each class at Embassy Creek Elementary to present the gifts and talk about the importance of the Constitution. He also plans to visit 5th grade students at Griffin Elementary School and Cooper City Elementary to give each of them a pocket U.S. Constitution. “We hope that the students cherish their copies and discuss the Constitution with their families,” said Blitman. “This is especially important during an election year.” So far, the effort has been well received. The Cooper City Kiwanis Club plans to distribute pocket U.S. Constitutions to next year’s fifth grade classes, as long as they have funding. To help raise money for this project and many others, the Kiwanis Club of Cooper City and the Key Club of Cooper City High School will be hosting their annual Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser at Cooper City High School on March 24. For information on the Kiwanis, send an email to sru625@aol.com.

Three Keys to an Effective Loan Modification By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

T

here are countless homeowners accepting loan modifications

in which their resulting payment is actually higher than their original mortgage payment, and the resulting principal balance owed is far greater than the home is worth. Still other homeowners end up losing their homes because they are unable to complete a loan modification before the home is sold at public auction. These homeowners were apparently unaware of the following three keys to an effective and sustainable loan modification.

Principal Reduction Alternative

If your home is worth significantly less than you owe on it, you may be eligible for a Principal Reduction Alternative (PRA) under a Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP). To be eligible for PRA, the home must also be occupied as your primary residence, you must be either delinquent or in danger of falling behind on your payments, and your mortgage payment must be more than 31% of your gross monthly income. If you qualify for PRA, the principal balance on your home loan is reduced to the current market value of your home. This allows you to continue making affordable mortgage payments on a long term basis. Other eligibility criteria may apply for PRA, and we encourage you to seek legal advice before submitting a PRA request to your lender.

Second Lien Modification Program

If your first mortgage was permanently modified under HAMP, and you have a second mortgage on the same property, you may be eligible for a modification or principal reduction on your second mortgage under the Second Lien Modification Program (2MP). In order to qualify for 2MP, your lender must also participate in the program, and you must be current on your HAMP modification.

Defend While You Modify

The third key is ensuring that the lender does not foreclose on your home before you loan modification is finalized. As explained in previous articles, just because you’ve applied for a loan modification does not mean that your lender will stop the foreclosure of your home. Unless you hire a qualified and experienced law firm to defend your interests in the foreclosure, all the time and energy spent attempting to modify your home loan may be wasted. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight for Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a FREE copy when you make an appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm at 1-800-770-7102 to schedule a free consultation, or visit www.arcialawfirm.com for more information.

laws concerning time sharing with minor children is the increase of 50-50 or equal time sharing. It is not uncommon for Moms and Dads to share equally in the time they spend with the children. In most instances, this schedule is looked upon favorably. It allows the child(ren) to develop a close relationship with both parents and have both parents be an active part of the child’s life. This schedule can produce conflicts however if the parents are not on “the same page” in their attempts to co-parent. The equal time sharing seems to work best when both parents reside within close proximity to one another. Since this is no longer a weekend only event, both parents will be responsible for getting the children off to school in a timely manner. If both parents reside within the same school district, this is generally not a problem. But what if the parents live a considerable distance from one another? How easy will it be to get the children to their school? More importantly, how fair will it be to the children if they are now required to travel a considerable distance early in the morning from one parent’s home to their school in another part of town?

The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisements. Before you decide, ask us to send you free written information about our qualifications and experience.

Recently, I have been faced with several situations concerning where the children will attend school. The parents live a considerable distance from one another and in each instance a minor child is starting high school in August. Since in both instances the child goes to a private school, the neighborhood public school is not acceptable to either one or both of the parents. In neither instance does their Marital Settlement Agreement address this particular issue. Instead of considering what is best for the child, the parents are now in a power struggle, each wanting to register the child in a school close to their home, but distant from their former spouse’s address. In each instance, court intervention will probably be necessary. In neither case are the parent’s considering what is best for the child. Equal time sharing can only work if the parents co-parent for the good of the child. Remember, it is not about you; it is always about the child! If you have any questions please feel free to contact my office for a free consultation at 954 385-9160.

Shading with Style By Faryal Ali

indows are “energy holes.” So, even though

windows make up only about 10% of a home’s insulated shell, as much as 50% of our energy is lost through our windows. Translated into dollars and cents, up to half of what you pay for cooling pours right through them. In Florida, heat is a way of life. Incoming sunlight is harmful to wood causing premature cracking and fading. The UV fades art work, rugs, furniture and upholstery. But there is a beautiful solution from Hunter Douglas. You can have your view and at the same time block the heat and UV with Silhouette and Luminette sheer shadings from Hunter Douglas. ▸▸ Kill the heat but keep the view - Come in to our showroom and see the evidence yourself. We’ll measure the temperature of the heat coming through the window glass with and without a Silhouette and you’ll be amazed at how much cooler it is with the shade in there.

ting the window actually enters the home. Lower numbers are better. Standard double-pane windows have a SHGC of 0.76, meaning 76% of the solar energy gets into the home. Add Luminette Privacy sheers and watch that number drop down to as low as 0.20. With energy prices rising, you’ll want to save as much as you can. At Beautiful Windows we have many different options to help you save money. Daylighting - This is the practice of lighting rooms with natural light rather than generating illumination from electricity. The sheers from these products actually diffuse light as it enters and help draw it deeper into the room. Plus, you can direct incoming light where it is needed most by tilting the louvers and slats. Another added advantage is that the sheers on the Silhouette actually keep out 80% of the incoming UV to protect upholstery, flooring and art from fading. When you visit us, ask to see our oversized Silhouette with room darkening features to keep your master room cozy & cool. Motorization - Flipping a wall switch to operate your shades beats having to go window to window to operate each blind individually. Wall switches and remotes can be programmed to handle multiple shades individually or in unison. The “platinum technology” from Hunter Douglas can be integrated into any home automation system. View Through - If view is important, then you want the “4” Silhouette because it offers the most “view through” (space between louvers). It brings the beauty of the outdoors in. The Luminette marries the beauty of sheers with the privacy of soft draperies and allows you to rotate the vanes for infinite degrees of light control. Living smart - Going green is about making small changes that can have a large impact: Energy costs dollars – so the more energy we save, the fewer dollars we spend. Plus, by saving money and energy resources, we leave a healthier world to future generations. Living smart is the best choice for everyone.

Move Over and Make Way for Emergency Vehicles By Sheriff Al Lamberti

H

ave you ever approached an intersection and

heard a siren? Perhaps you have looked in your rearview mirror and seen flashing lights behind you. Chances are that you have passed an emergency worker or a law enforcement officer who pulled off the roadway with his or her lights flashing. You should be aware that in Florida the law requires that you move over, make way and slow down when approaching all emergency and law enforcement vehicles stopped on the roadway. The law, known as the Move Over Act, is designed to protect law enforcement officers, firefighters and other emergency workers from needless, accidental tragedy.

After 34 years in law enforcement and public safety, I have learned that driving, especially when responding to calls for service, is the most hazardous duty performed by law enforcement officers, firefighters and emergency service professionals. We at the Broward Sheriff’s Office are not immune to such tragedies. This past February was the six-year anniversary of the death of Deputy Ryan Seguin, who was killed by a motorist while conducting a traffic stop. This tragedy and numerous other fatalities and injuries to emergency service workers could have been avoided had the driver simply slowed down and moved over. The Broward Sheriff’s Office strictly enforces the Move Over Law to help keep you and all public safety professionals safe. While on the roadway, please be alert, pay attention and remember the following: ▸▸ If an emergency vehicle is approaching from behind, put on your turn signal, yield to the right-of-way, slow down or pull over. Once the emergency vehicle has passed, use your turn signal and carefully re-enter the roadway. ▸▸ On a two-lane roadway, you are required to slow to a speed that is 20 miles per hour less than the posted speed limit. If the speed limit is 20 miles per hour or less, you must slow down to five miles per hour. ▸▸ If you are driving on an interstate or roadway with multiple lanes of travel in the same direction and you approach an emergency or law enforcement vehicle parked along the roadway, you must vacate the lane closest to that vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so. ▸▸ When arriving at an intersection where an emergency vehicle is approaching from the cross street, come to a complete stop and wait until all emergency vehicles have safely passed before continuing. If you are a driver who violates the Move Over Law, you can be charged with a moving violation, which results in a fine and points on your license. More importantly, by violating this important law, you would be putting both yourself and a dedicated “first responder” at risk. On behalf of the men and women of the Broward Sheriff’s Office, I urge you to help protect those who are sworn to serve and protect you. Always remember to make way, slow down and MOVE OVER when approaching an emergency or law enforcement vehicle – it’s the law. Experience the LUXE Day Spa Difference By Stacey Bomser

UXE Day Spa is setting a new standard for body and skin care. Every inch of this luxuriously appointed retreat was designed with client comfort and relaxation in mind. The full-service day spa boasts an extensive treatment menu with some the most unique and innovative treatments available, all designed to pamper clients from beginning to end.

What do you think distinguishes LUXE Day Spa from other day spas? What sets us apart are the little "extra" touches we provide. For example, clients receive a warm neck wrap during nail treatments. Massages and facials also include a heated neck wrap to promote relaxation and they end with a scalp massage with argon oil, which is a reparative hair treatment. We also use hot towels and aromatherapy in our services. It’s these little touches that make a huge difference. LUXE Day Spa’s one-of-a-kind zero gravity pedicure chair provides clients

This allows your heart rate to slow down, producing a feeling of weightlessness and encouraging your body to settle quickly into a natural state of relaxation, and you just float away. To make this experience even more relaxing, clients are wrapped in warm towels and provided with an eye pillow and heated neck wrap. Our clients can take comfort in knowing their service is being conducted with safety and hygiene in mind. There is no concern about cross-contamination because there are no pedicure tubs; rather clients soak their feet in a small bowl of warm water.

Do you offer any other special services? We are pleased to provide EliminInk tattoo removal. This is a revolutionary, non-invasive alternative to laser treatments. EliminInk bonds with the tattoo ink to lift the color out of the skin. There is no scarring and it is safe and effective for all colors. It can even remove permanent make-up.
