Thankful for the Present and the Future

N

ovember is a time when many of us take a moment to give thanks. But understanding how good we have it requires a bit of perspective. Social media algorithms combined with the current political environment can make our present-day problems seem insurmountable. The reality is we are living such fantastic lives that our great-grandparents wouldn’t be able to imagine them. It is easy to be pessimistic. There is another bloody war in Europe, we are still feeling the after-effects of the worst pandemic since the Spanish Flu, Global Warming continues to pose a long-term threat, and price inflation has returned to the economy. These challenges may be with us for some time, but they will be overcome. We have already come so far, so fast. 100 years ago, in 1922, the life expectancy at birth was about 60 years; today it is 79. Antibiotics did not exist. There was about one vehicle on the road per 100 people. Two in three homes lacked electricity; six out of seven homes did not have a bathtub. A typical person completed about eight years of school; segregation was rampant across the southern U.S., and the most common job in America was a farm worker. And, this was during the “Roaring Twenties,” a period of relative excess. Things we take for granted today like air conditioning, the internet, air travel, television, and higher education simply didn’t exist. Taking stock of all we have today makes us incredibly thankful. We live in comfort, in a beautiful community carved out of a swamp. Our children are relatively safe to pursue their passions. There are numerous educational opportunities for almost everyone. Each of us carries access to all the world’s knowledge in our pocket. Our community is an incredible melting pot of cultures. The necessities of life are almost universally provided for. We are thankful for all we have. Sincerely,

Christy & Terry Jaillet OUR CITY MEDIA PUBLISHERS

Veterans Day

On Veterans Day, we honor and remember every man and woman who has served in the United States Armed Forces to serve and protect our nation, defend the Constitution, and the freedoms that we enjoy as Americans. Originally observed as Armistice Day, commemorates the end of World War I when fighting ceased on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. The holiday evolved to be a celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good of our nation.

Thanksgiving Day

NOVEMBER 14 Flamingo Gardens Orchid Society

Happy Thanksgiving! We hope you gather with family and loved ones to celebrate each other and give thanks for all that we have. In the words of John F. Kennedy, “Over three centuries ago, our forefathers in Virginia and in Massachusetts, far from home in a lonely wilderness, set aside a time of thanksgiving. On the appointed day, they gave reverent thanks for their safety, for the health of their children, for the fertility of their fields, for the love which bound them together, and for the faith which united them with their God.”

This month’s program for the evening will be “Orchid Environments” presented by Scott Peplin. Scott has developed his common-sense style of growing orchids over the last 25 years and has studied the environment of South Florida as it relates to Orchids. Whether you are a beginner or a more seasoned hobbyist you are welcome to attend our meetings. Join us at the Mary Porter Learning Center at Flamingo Gardens, 3750 S. Flamingo Rd., Davie. Program begins 7:30 pm.

Fox Vein & Laser Experts Varicose Veins & Beyond!

V

aricose veins are not just a cosmetic problem. They can make your legs ache, burn, throb, itch, and cramp. Untreated varicose veins tend to get worse over time. They can cause leg swelling, phlebitis (vein inflammation), thrombosis (blood clots in the vein), and skin ulcers. Fox Vein & Laser Experts specialize in diagnosing and treating venous disease, including varicose veins, leg pain and swelling, ulcer care, venous insufficiency, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and blood clotting disorders. We offer the newest and best minimally invasive vein procedures: Endovenous laser ablation, ClariVein®, Ambulatory phlebectomies, ultrasound-guided, foam and traditional sclerotherapy.

DR. SUSAN FOX

DABVLM, DO, RPVI, FSVM Dr. Susan Fox is an expert in vein and vascular diagnosis and treatment. She is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Vascular Medicine, and Phlebology (the treatment of veins). She was one of the first physicians in the United States to be Board Certified in the treatment of veins. She is also a Registered Physician Vascular Interpreter (RPVI) and is certified to read vascular ultrasound studies. After completing her Medical Residency and Vascular Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, she joined the teaching faculty at University Hospitals of Cleveland, Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Fox is a Diplomate of the American College of Phlebology and a Fellow of the Society of Vascular Medicine. She has been featured as a vein expert on multiple news programs in both America and Latin America and has written numerous articles and lectured extensively on varicose veins. She has successfully taught physicians and medical personnel to treat venous disease for over a decade at her vein treatment facility. She is fluent in Spanish and English.

SPECIALIZING IN VARICOSE VEIN TREATMENT ENDOVENOUS LASER ABLATION (EVLA/EVLT)

Endovenous Laser Ablation is one of the most effective treatments for large varicose veins with a 98–100 percent success rate. It involves inserting a thin laser fiber through the affected vein; there are no incisions and thus leaves no scars. Tiny pulses of laser energy are delivered as the fiber is pulled through the vein, gently heating it and causing it to collapse and seal shut. The insufficient veins become shrunken scars that fade over time. These procedures take less than a 30-minutes with little to no downtime afterward.

VARITHENA®

Varithena® is ideal for smaller, less obtrusive veins. It uses foam sclerotherapy and is a safe and effective vein removal technique. During traditional sclerotherapy, a solution is injected directly into the affected veins. While you may feel a pinch at the injection site, foam sclerotherapy isn’t painful. We perform it under ultrasound guidance and direct the foam into the problematic veins watching everything along the way. The person has no downtime, usually minimal to no pain, and only needs to stay active and wear a compression hose afterward.

BEFORE

AFTER

AMBULATORY PHLEBECTOMY

Ambulatory Phlebectomy is a surgical approach to removing larger and more troublesome veins. It is often an in-office procedure that requires a local anesthetic. The veins are teased out through the tiny holes without causing any significant scarring. Most people return to normal activities immediately afterward without much recovery time.

SPIDER VEIN REMOVAL

Spider Veins Removal is deemed cosmetic even though they may cause symptoms. There are a couple of treatment options. We can use sclerotherapy, where a solution is injected into the vein with a tiny needle. The vein lining gets irritated and gradually seals shut, closing the vein over several weeks. It may take several sessions for all of the veins to go away. There is also a cutaneous laser option if you prefer. The laser uses light pulses to heat the vein and scar them shut. For the tiny and unsightly facial veins or tiny red veins, we also have a machine called the VeinGogh. It uses energy microbursts to close tiny veins without any downtime or scarring. This procedure often seals the small veins over a few days to weeks and can be done in a few sessions with excellent results.

Harvest Drive Celebrates 30 Years of Children Helping Children by Feeding Families

L

ocal schools are partnering with Harvest Drive, Inc. to make sure local families don’t go hungry for Thanksgiving. The organization, in partnership with more than 200 schools, will provide a week’s worth of groceries plus a gift card or perishable items to ensure 2,400 families enjoy a Thanksgiving meal. This is nothing new for Renee Herman who founded this grass roots non-profit organization 30 years ago on the principle of teaching children the importance of compassion and empathy for others. What began as an annual Thanksgiving Drive blossomed into a year-round volunteer-driven effort approximately 20 years ago. Entering its 30th year, Harvest Drive continues its tradition by once again helping families to have a bountiful Thanksgiving feast and enough groceries for the holiday week. Students at participating schools have been collecting non-perishable items, household goods, and grocery gift cards. Collections began mid-October and will conclude in early November. The items will be consolidated at 13 school-based distribution sites to ensure that recipient families receive 6-10 bags of groceries in time for Thanksgiving. The mission of Harvest Drive, Inc. is to promote the concept of philanthropy to local

students by providing the opportunity for them to give back directly to their community in a basic and meaningful way. Students working in conjunction with community partners provide food and other necessities including gently used clothing and household items to Broward County schools’ families in need during the Thanksgiving holiday and throughout the year. I

f the Rodeo Grounds in Davie could talk, it would tell some tall stories! From the birth of Five Star Rodeo in 1986 to the transition into the Weekley Brothers Davie Pro Rodeo in 2007, Davie has hosted some of the biggest premier rodeo events in the Southeast. “It’s Just in Your Head”

LOCAL ARTIST’S EXHIBIT BRINGS ATTENTION TO MENTAL HEALTH

C

eramic Artist, Brianna Sopourn is exhibiting her insightful pieces at HCA Florida University Hospital. The artwork, titled “It’s Just in Your Head,” is a series of fifteen ceramic objects constructed to reference the anatomy of the human heart, brain, and stomach. This series focuses on mental health and its direct connection to physical health. The work does not address a specific mental illness but instead focuses on the physical detriment one can face if their mental illness goes without treatment. The fifteen ceramic objects will be a traveling exhibition displayed on pedestals that travel with the work to allow ease of installation, placement, and viewing. This series is designed for hospitals as it functions as found artwork allowing onlookers to view art passively and engage at their own pace. The fifteen ceramic objects include five hearts, five stomachs, and five brains. Each of the five iterations of the organs become

increasingly decayed from right to left. The purpose of representing each organ five times is to symbolize the gradual process that occurs over time. If mental health needs are ignored long enough, a person arrives at an unrecognizable place both mentally and physically. “It is my goal through this instillation to bring to light the physical effect of poor mental health and help viewers to understand the importance of seeking care for their mental health to protect both their mental and physical health,” said Brianna. This series of artwork will be displayed in hospitals across South Florida. The placement of the work in hospitals was intentional to aid visitors in connecting the dots between mental and physical health and allow patients and visitors to begin to process the need for mental healing alongside physical healing.

Brianna Sopourn’s work is on display at the HCA Florida University Hosptial, 3476 S University Dr, Davie.

Honor Flight South Florida Celebrates Milestone 25th Flight

H

onor Flight South Florida recently celebrated its 25th flight transporting 72 veterans on an all-inclusive trip to Washington, D.C.. They visited the World War II Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at the National Mall, Arlington Cemetery, and the US Marine Corps War Memorial. The volunteer-led organization was also honored with a proclamation by Broward County Mayor Michael Udine for the hub’s dedication to serving veterans in South Florida, commemorating the organization’s milestone 25th mission to the nation’s capital. Veterans on the flight were welcomed home at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport with a celebratory homecoming ceremony. “Each of our missions have been special in their own way and we are always so honored to be able to thank the veterans that join us on each of our flights, so to reach this milestone of 25 missions means a lot to us as an organization and everyone who has been a part of this

journey with us,” said Honor Flight chairman Mike Miskew. “Being able to organize a truly memorable day for our veterans is what makes these missions so important.” Founded in 2011, Honor Flight South Florida is an independent hub of the national Honor Flight network that serves veterans in Monroe, Miami-Dade and Broward counties. The local South Florida Hub organizes honor flights from Fort Lauderdale and Miami airports four to five times a year, also hosting additional volunteer-driven events throughout the year.

Each November, the hub hosts its annual Rick Asper Memorial Golf Tournament to raise funds for upcoming flights scheduled for the following year. Honoring the late Rick Asper, founder and chairman of Honor Flight South Florida, the annual golf tournament is one of the hub’s key fundraisers and social events benefiting the organization’s programming for the following year. The Rick Asper Memorial Golf Tournament, slated for November 4, 2022, at the Davie Golf and Country Club, is now accepting participants and sponsors. Veterans, active-duty military, and first responders receive a special discount for single-player registration.

LOCAL STUDENTS NAMED NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP SEMIFINALISTS

T

wenty four local students have been named Semifinalists in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program. Just 117 students who attend public or private schools in Broward County achieved this honor. “This is an incredible honor for every student, and we are so proud of each of them for being recognized for their outstanding scores and academic achievements,” said education advocate Sandra Dubose. The National Merit Scholarship Program was founded to identify and honor scholastically talented American youth and to encourage them to develop their abilities to the fullest. Only 1% of the 1.6 million entrants are selected as Semifinalists each year. The Semifinalists are students who achieve the highest scores on the PSAT/NMSQT in their respective states. Davie and Cooper City semifinalists included:

NMSC winners receive a $2,500 scholarship and the honor of being a Nation Merit Scholar. In order to become a Finalist, a Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT or ACT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test. Semifinalists must also submit a detailed scholarship application which includes information about their academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, as well as honors and awards received. Three types of National Merit Scholarships will be offered in the spring of 2023. Every Finalist will compete for one of 2,500 National Merit® $2500 Scholarships that will be awarded on a state-representational basis. About 950 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards will be provided by approximately 180 corporations and business organizations for Finalists who meet their specified criteria, such as children of the grantor’s employees or residents of communities where sponsor plants or offices are located. In addition, about 160 colleges and universities are expected to finance some 3,800 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards for Finalists who will attend the sponsor institution. National Merit Scholarship winners of 2023 will be announced beginning in April and concluding in July. REACH OUT TO THE 'OTHER SIDE' AT THE FLORIDA DAY OF THE DEAD CELEBRATION

outh Floridians will celebrate the Day of the Dead (DOTD) in Fort Lauderdale. Since 2010 during this sacred time of year, the gate between Florida and Mictlán, the mythological Aztec “Land of the Dead”, opens as thousands of participants costumed like playful skeletons honor their ancestors in a FREE Signature Autumn Event for all of South Florida. The Day of the Dead (Spanish: Día de los Muertos) is a holiday traditionally celebrated on November 1 and 2.] It originated in Mexico and is celebrated broadly across the world. Although associated with the Western Christian Allhallowtide observances of All Hallow's Eve, All Saints' Day, and All Souls' Day, it has a much less solemn tone and is portrayed as a holiday of joyful celebration rather than mourning. The multi-day holiday involves family and friends gathering to pay respects and to remember friends and family members who have died. Fort Lauderdale’s obseverances will take place on Tuesday, November 2 with a candlelight vigil in downtown Fort Lauderdale and on Saturday, November 5th with a processional and celebration. You are invited to dress in traditional costumes, wear masks and Calaveras makeup and bring props and signs honoring your lost loved ones. Schedule of Events MEXHIKA STAGE 4-5:30pm Huizenga Plaza, 32 East Las Olas Boulevard Indigenous roots of Dia de los Muertos are

showcased before the Processional, with Aztec and Mayan performing troupes performing ancient dance and music rituals. Performances by Tloke Nuhake and Mesoamerican Danza. SKELETON PROCESSIONAL The ceremony begins 5:00 pm Sharp at Huizenga Plaza, 32 East Las Olas Boulevard A playful spectacle that honors the Mexican tradition where skeleton costumed revelers animate dozens of 10’-18’ tall giant puppets from Puppet Network and the Puppet Guild of South Florida. Musicians lead the way as this all-ages processional. FOLKLORICO STAGE 5-11pm SW 3rd Avenue just South of Broward Boulevard As the centerpiece of the festival, the Folklorico Stage showcases hundreds of performers presenting the best of traditional folk dance and music traditions from Mexico and throughout Latin America – closing with an amazing Mariachi concert! BONEYARD BANDSTAND 6pm-4am America’s Backyard, 100 SW 3rd Avenue The Boneyard Bandstand opens with New Orleans-styled Brass Bands, reinterpreted with a cool modern twist until 8:30 pm. PROVIDING A HELPING HAND TO INDIVIDUALS EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS By Sheriff Gregory Tony

W

e are all only one major crisis away from homelessness. To understand this startling fact, we need look no further than the devastation wrought by Hurricane Ian, which destroyed an untold number of residences and displaced thousands of people into emergency shelters. Many who went to sleep the night before the storm with a home, food, an income, and easy access to physical and behavioral healthcare are faced with uncertainties of what’s to come. It can happen that quickly. The Broward Sheriff's Office Homeless Outreach Team works tirelessly to link displaced community members with the social services necessary to start anew and get back on their feet. Focused on providing care and assistance, the team has at least one specialist in every BSO district working full-time to support and assist these individuals. Everyone's story is important. These individuals come from all walks of life with diverse backgrounds, passions, and needs. Our Homeless Outreach Team specialists work to build rapport and trust and gain a better understanding of their situation. Sometimes, getting someone to accept assistance may take weeks, months, or years, but we've had tremendous success by never giving up. The men & women of BSO are committed to service – and aiding someone in need is an opportunity we don’t shy away from. In September, off-duty Sergeant Mike Weiner stopped to check on a man sitting alone in his vehicle with a flat tire. Sgt. Weiner, who oversees BSO's Homeless Outreach Team in Pompano Beach, discovered the man's name was Hayward. A Vietnam War veteran, Hayward had been homeless for an extended period and had lost contact with his family and friends. With the man's consent, Sgt. Weiner contacted veteran services. Deputy Mike Francis, who received the 2020 BSO Deputy of the Year Award for his work with our homeless population, contacted a community partner to assist Hayward in getting a hotel room until the Veterans Affairs Division could make accommodations. Hayward has remained in constant contact with our Homeless Outreach Team. He will soon be moving into a Veteran Assisted Living Facility where he can stay indefinitely and receive professional care. The upcoming holiday season will offer more opportunities to positively impact the lives of our local homeless population. Memories of special times with their loved ones can provoke interest in resolving damaged relationships. Our Homeless Outreach Team spends much of the holidays helping these individuals reunite with family and friends. The team also takes this time to prepare for weather changes. This past January, South Florida endured the coldest temperatures in over a decade. BSO's Homeless Outreach Team, in partnership with the Multi-Agency Homeless Task Force, the Broward County Homeless Initiative Partnership and other community organizations, made an emergency purchase of blankets, socks, and other necessities, which our deputies distributed to provide warmth to those in need. Hope is the most important thing we can provide anyone who needs help. Once someone sees the possibility of recapturing their life, it rejuvenates the belief a successful outcome is attainable. As an organization, we are committed to identifying the needs of the community and meeting them however we can – for most, a little hope is all they require. Service Equals Reward,

Sheriff Gregory Tony

■ LEGALLY SPEAKING

HOLIDAY RECOMMENDATIONS

TO ACHIEVE FAMILY

Harmony

T

By Andrea L. Jakob, Esq.

hanksgiving may be the time to begin a family discussion about favorite family items and wishes for the future. The holidays may be a time for thanks and reflection, but it may also be a time to ask your father to consider leaving you his favorite t-shirt or his service medals to avoid a family rift in the future. Your "stuff" may come with various memories and emotions that will differ among your family members. Disharmony among adult siblings often comes at emotional times, such as the loss of a parent or the downsizing of your family home. My client "Maria" (not her real name) lost her father. She and her brothers never had a close relationship during dad's life, but it went haywire following his passing, all over a lawnmower. "Wendy," the neighborhood gossip, witnessed Maria's brother taking items out of the garage late one night and abruptly called Maria. Maria then began fighting with her brothers over the mower! While many people may like lawnmowers, for some reason, it touched a nerve in my client, and she wanted that one! This family also fought over a book and other "cherished" items. The push and grab over "stuff" sometimes happens to the best families out of grief, frustration, or resentment following a parent's passing. While my clients often prepare a list of assets such as homes, bank accounts, and investment accounts to pass to their heirs, what is usually missing are the personal items that, while not expensive, are priceless for their sentimental value. Often these items will cause big family fights between children who feel there was not a fair division of these assets. If your goal is family harmony, it could be a huge blunder to fail to consider the emotional ties children may have to their parent's possessions. I have several ways to remedy this potential disaster. I remember the remarkable way my sister, cousins, and I divided my Grandma Sara's tea sets and tchotchkes "stuff." We went around a circle, each picking one piece after another. The process was emotional as we discussed each item and different memories of our loving grandmother. Since fairness means different things to different people, the processes of drawing lots, letting people pick in birth order, or devising something else to divide is valuable. What's important is to follow the chosen strategy. Even if you're irritated that one sibling got what you wanted, if you agree to the division strategy, you may be okay with the outcome vs. angry like Maria, whose brothers came in late at night to "clean out" the house. A software tool called "FairSplit" helps families divide assets. According to the website, the "system helps move all parties toward agreement and lets each party know that the system provides them a fair and equitable way to divide. FairSplit helps divide things, not families." Sometimes the best strategy is the simplest one: Ask people what they want ahead of time. Many women enjoy gifting jewelry to grown children to see it worn and appreciated. Or, they may say they do not want any of your stuff! Such talks force us to confront the inevitability of aging. The alternative is to keep quiet and risk a family divided over "Stuff."

L

ike the answer to most medical questions, the answer is not so straightforward. There are many factors which go into the decision-making process. These factors include maturity/anxiety of the child, type of sedation available and financial resources available to the family. In our experience, the consideration of each of these variables is of utmost importance in consistently making the right decision for the pediatric dental patient. The first step in the process is to gather all of the available information. This is accomplished by performing a complete assessment of the patient. The information gathered includes the obvious dental needs, diet, home care, age, emotional maturity, and dental anxiety. Most decisions regarding the treatment plan can be made at this stage. For example, a two-year-old who suffers from carious lesions (cavities) on all primary (baby) teeth would likely require a more comprehensive sedation in order to complete the entire dental treatment in a non-traumatic manner. A child at this age does not have the cognitive and emotional ability to complete the treatment without potential long-term negative effects. In other words, without the right approach this child may become an adult with a long -term phobia of dentistry. On the other hand, a 16-year-old who has been consistent with regular checkups and has already had dental treatment in the past, would unlikely require sedation. Most other scenarios fall somewhere in between. Once the needs are established, the type of sedation would be considered. Types of sedation range from simple anxiolysis with nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) administered in the dental office setting to general anesthesia done in a hospital setting. This is where the experience and intuition of the pediatric dentist is of most importance. Ideally, we would like to use the medication facilitating the completion of the treatment with the least sedative effect. Next month’s editorial will review the various types of dental sedations in more detail. It is at this point, that the parent/guardian must be informed and educated as to the process. For example, inhalation agents like nitrous oxide (laughing gas) completely exit the body prior to the end of a procedure. Other medications, depending on their route of administration, exit the body more slowly and prior arrangements should be made for an adult to sit with the child on the drive back home from the dental visit. Lastly, financials should be considered when making final decisions. Insurance breakdowns provided by the major insurance carriers are usually very specific as to what will be covered in most situations. However, if there is any ambiguity an estimation of benefits (“EOB”) may be requested from the insurance company prior to the start of treatment. Finances may also direct treatment. For example, in a situation where there is a lot of dental work to be completed, doing so under a “deeper sedation” may seem more expensive because of the higher cost of administration. However, if there is a large amount of dental work needed, doing so under a “lighter” form of sedation may result in the need for multiple visits. Possibly costing more in both time and money. Our advice is to focus on prevention. The sooner healthy habits are established, the less likely extensive treatment will be needed. Additionally, early exposure to the dental office (when dental work is not yet needed) decreases anxiety levels once dental treatment is necessary. There are also many benefits to the development of a relationship. The child is more comfortable and is more easily read by the doctor. Difficult conversations between parent and doctor are easily handled once there is trust.

■ MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

Davie Update

By Mayor Judy Paul e mourn the passing of Alan Goldstein. Alan was the co-owner of the Tower Deli and spent many years serving his community, not only as a restaurateur, but as a man dedicated to his hometown. Alan was a kind and caring man who loved all animals, especially his dogs. We will miss you Alan. A celebration of life was held on Oct. 15 at the Pine Island Ridge Country Club. The State EOC issued a mission number and requested the assistance of the Davie Police Department to respond to Lee County/Ft. Meyers Beach. We deployed a full team that joined a search and rescue from the fire department that had been requested several days earlier. We wish them a safe journey and we hope their presence can alleviate the pain that is being felt after Ian ravaged the west coast. Economic uncertainty, an array of virus mutations, and social reform are some of the many factors the Davie community continues to navigate. The Town remains a symbol of resiliency, but just as important, is balancing the preservation of our history, with a progressive and diverse vision that is incorporated into our operational and economic development initiatives. This is evident in our upcoming open space and recreation initiatives, such as the Governor Leroy Collins Farm Park, the Davie Wetlands Park, and a pending Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Master Plan. The Town has experienced steady growth in population over the last decade, of roughly a 14% increase to 106,984 residents, which not only parallels eleven (11) consecutive years of tax base growth but also prompted a revised district boundary map. This operating budget results from planning with Town Council, real-time economic and fiscal trend analyses, information technology best practices, environmental initiatives aimed at reducing our carbon footprint, and the continuous assessment of the workforce and community needs, all of which align with the Town’s core priorities for Fiscal Year 2023 - Fiscal Stability; Transformative Redevelopment; Embracing the Technology Movement; and Promoting Sustainability and Resiliency. Three of these priorities are ones we have emphasized for several years now, while Promoting Sustainability and Resiliency is new for Fiscal Year 2023. For Fiscal Year 2023, thirteen (13) positions are added to our workforce to maintain operational efficiencies. The millage rate remains unchanged, as does the residential fire assessment rate. The Debt Service millage rate will decrease due to new construction and higher property values. The solid waste assessment will increase by over 10% due to contractual Consumer Price Index (CPI) increases and disposal costs. The Town utilizes an interlocal agreement with Broward County for disposal services and the agreement’s renewal, commencing July 2023, will lead to significant increases in disposal costs. The interlocal agreement remains the best environmental option as the Town’s waste is burned and utilized as energy to divert waste from the landfill while studies continue for more environmentally friendly options. The Governor Leroy Collins Farm Park, located at the northwest corner of Shotgun Road and SW 36 Street, is under design with an anticipated groundbreaking during Fiscal Year 2023. The Town has phased the project based on its Florida Communities Trust (FCT) grant commitments. Phase 1 of park construction is fully funded at $9 million and will include grant-committed project elements such as an education center (modular), covered ring, overlook, and trails. At the Fiscal Year 2023 Vision and Goalsetting Session, the Town Council directed staff to pursue two (2) initiatives related to Davie Wetlands Park, located at the northeast corner of SW 136 Avenue and SW 26 Street. The first initiative is to explore a partnership using wetland bank mitigation credits to construct the entire site which would likely save the Town significant funds on the design and construction of the wetlands, stormwater retention, and uplands. An additional benefit could be realized through the sale of wetland mitigation credits through which the Town would receive a portion of the revenues. The other initiative is developing a partnership with a reputable environmental group to utilize the park as their main offices and provide educational programming to the community.

THE DONOWAY CENTER Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation for Advanced and Oligo-Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer

If you are being treated for advanced or oligometastatic pancreatic cancer you may want to contact Dr. Robert Donoway at ATLAS ONCOLOGY in Hollywood, Florida. Dr Donoway is using multi-modality therapy combining Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation with chemo-immunoradio therapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients from around the world after they have stopped responding to standard of care therapy and have been left with few options for further treatment. With over 32 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in south Florida, Dr Donoway recognized that because of late diagnosis, up to 85% of patients treated for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis. This fact limited the benefit many patients might receive from pancreatic surgery, which is problematic as surgery has been long held to be the only reproduceable therapy for cure; whereas in reality surgery is currently more likely Palliative in almost 80% of the cases. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating NanoKnife surgery with chemotherapy and now supplemented with immunotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially when compared to chemotherapy alone. Dr Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex cases. During the past decade, patients from around the world have traveled to benefit from

this groundbreaking treatment by Dr Donoway, which is FDA approved. Dr Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, Breast, and sarcomas, using NanoKnife Surgery based on its FDA approved guidelines. Patients experience a brief recovery, which means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating Pancreatic Ca. The treatment history been largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 10% five year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein‘s definition of insanity.” Dr Donoway is involved in ongoing research in identifying the best chemo-immuno therapy and sequencing to be used along with Pancreatic nanoKnife/IRE . Dr Donoway states, “the results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over nine years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have lived a little over a year, and so this technique opens a whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” Dr Donoway has presented his results of pancreatic ablation at the recent annual meeting of the American Pancreatic Association.
