Welcome to the Age of Artificial Intelligence
In the mid-15th century, German inventor Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press. Over the next two centuries, his invention replaced the church’s near-monopoly on the written word. It led to an ever-increasing spread of knowledge, information, and understanding of history.
Similarly, the development of the steam engine kick-started the Industrial Revolution, changing how people lived forever. Economic growth accelerated, people migrated to cities, and goods became less expensive and standardized.
These breakthroughs were followed by the invention of the telephone in the late 19th century and air travel in the early 20th century. More recently, the development of the micro-computer, the Internet, and modern mobile phones have impacted every aspect of human life.
Each of these breakthroughs profoundly impacted the world and led to a democratization of sorts. The printing press allowed for the spread of information to the masses; The Industrial Revolution allowed people to choose vocations rather than inheriting them; And the telephone and air travel enabled people to communicate and meet with people anywhere in the world.
Artificial Intelligence is a similar watershed technology development that will reshape the world. Large language models like ChatGPT and Google’s Bard will soon be omnipresent. How they impact our world is exciting and daunting.
AI is already everywhere in our society. Students use it to “help” write term papers; forecasters use AI to predict hurricane tracks; software engineers use it to create websites; AI is used in healthcare to diagnose illnesses; and finance is used to detect fraud. Soon, any ask that utilizes a computer will likely be completed, at least in part, by communicating with an AI.
Each of the advancements in technology came with accompanying challenges. For example, there were sweatshops across London during the Industrial Revolution, airplanes were quickly turned into weapons of war, and the Internet was used to target people for nefarious purposes. However, each of these innovations has led to incredible growth in human prosperity, creativity, living conditions, and knowledge. We are confident that AI will do the same.

Memorial Day Parade & Ceremony
Memorial Day holiday began as “Decoration Day” on May 30, 1868 – a time to decorate the graves of those that lost their lives in the war; yet, even prior to that date, local observances were held to honor those who died fighting in battles across the North and the South. The Town of Davie will recognize Memorial Day with a Parade beginning at SW 70th Terrace and concluding at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. A Ceremony will be held at the Fairgrounds at 11:00 am. Prep With The Best!
As the 2022-2023 school year quickly comes to a close, students are studying hard for AP’s and final exams and looking forward to an exciting summer! For current juniors, we hope you have achieved your ACT/SAT scores or are on your way to doing so; if you haven’t begun, it’s time to get started! For incoming juniors, it is never too early to begin. But the world of testing has changed and continues to do so every day, and we thought we’d address some specific questions you might have!
Does my child need an SAT/ACT score to apply for college?
If your child is applying to any of the Florida state universities (UF, FSU, UCF, USF, etc.), a score is required for admission! The state university system shows no signs of removing the testing requirement in the near future, so it is essential for almost all students we see. In addition, test scores are still a requirement for Bright Futures scholarships.
What if my student is applying to only testoptional schools?
There is a great debate occurring right now about the role of tests and the advantage/disadvantage of applying without scores. While most schools have not published comparative acceptance rates for test/test-optional, it is clear that having a good test score is still a huge benefit in admissions for almost all schools. It may not be a requirement, but admission has only gotten MORE competitive, and many students are still submitting strong scores as evidence of their academic achievement.
Does it matter which test they take?
Both the SAT and ACT are considered equally by all schools. While the SAT has traditionally been the more popular test, do not let this influence you. Many students do better on ACT and gain acceptance to the best schools in the country with just an ACT score.
How do we know which test is better?
It really is impossible to know without trying both. BTS offers a diagnostic test comprised of half ACT/half SAT, and this is the best way to tell. Many students fear the ACT
science because they are not strong in science in school, but find that the section requires little knowledge of science material. Don’t waste time pursuing the wrong test. Take our diagnostic!
When should we begin?
We like students to begin as early as possible in this process. Whether students are strong or weak test-takers, starting early allows them to have a chance to take multiple tests and still finish by the end of their junior year. One of the nicest things about testing is that when students are done, they are truly done! A great time to start is the summer prior to junior year, before the rigors of school set in. BTS offers comprehensive summer classes for students looking to get a jump start.
What if my child hasn’t taken Algebra II yet?
Many high schoolers do not take Algebra II until their junior year, and both the SAT and ACT cover concepts from this class. Even if they are just beginning Algebra II, we encourage students to start prep early.
When is the digital SAT starting?
Beginning in March of 2024, the SAT will start administering the SAT online for U.S. high schoolers. This means that current Sophomores are the first group to take the test in this format, though their testing in the fall will be traditional.
The new SAT will be adaptive, meaning it will offer fewer questions, but will “adapt” and offer harder or easier questions based on the success on earlier questions. The content will basically remain the same as the old SAT, but reading passages will be shorter and have fewer questions per passage, and an online graphing calculator (Desmos) is available for all math questions. The test will be administered at testing centers on test takers’ own computers or tablets and will not be available at home. Scores will be reported in days, rather than weeks.
This creates a confusing choice for parents this coming year. Should students start with the old SAT and hope to be done by the December test? Should they wait and begin in March with the new SAT? Should they avoid the entire issue and simply focus on the ACT?
The truth is that the plan is different for every student, and we are here to help you make this decision!

DAVIE & BOY SCOUTS TO HONOR FALLEN HEROES ON MEMORIAL DAY
The Annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony has been a longstanding tradition in Davie for almost 50 years. This event provides an opportunity for families to come together and pay their respects to the brave men and women who have lost their lives while serving in the military. The Town of Davie, Scoutmasters Camporee Committee, South Florida Council, and the Boy Scouts of America will be hosting the event on May 29, and all patriotic Americans are encouraged to join.
Scouting Chief Paul Spalding emphasized the importance of Memorial Day as a time to honor the sacrifices made by countless soldiers who dedicated their lives to protecting our freedom. The Parade will commence at 10:15 a.m., starting from the Davie Fire Administration and ending at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. Participants are encouraged to dress patriotically and wave American flags along the route. Several community organizations, including Girl Scout Troops, Boy Scout
Troops, school bands, civic organizations, The Davie Police and Fire Rescue, and Town Councilmembers, will participate in the Parade. Veterans, Scouts, and military members are encouraged to wear their dress uniforms.
After the Parade, the Ceremony will commence promptly at 11:00 a.m. at the Rodeo Grounds on Davie Road. This will be a solemn occasion to recognize and honor the sacrifices made by our soldiers, including those who fought in different wars. The Ceremony will include a 21 Gun Salute, and flags will be available for purchase prior to the event for $1.00. Attendees may also bring their own flags to be placed on Veterans' graves during the Ceremony.
▸ The Memorial Day Parade & Ceremony will be held at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds on May 29, 2023. For more info, contact Paul Spalding at chief@smcc.us

BROWARD COUNTY REGISTERS NEW VOTERS IN HIGH SCHOOLS
In April, Joe Scott, the Supervisor of Elections for Broward County, conducted a month-long voter registration campaign in high schools across the county. Officials from the Elections Office visited each high school and interacted with students in their classrooms, encouraging them to register to vote. During history, government, and civics classes, students were given forms and instructions on how to complete them correctly.
Although many students had already registered via the state of Florida’s driver’s license voter registration program, others took advantage of the opportunity to participate in future elections.
In a video released on Browardvotes.com, Scott said, “Helping young citizens vote for the first time is the most gratifying part of my job. Here in Florida, your sixteenth birthday is a significant milestone, not because you can obtain your driver’s license, but because you can register to vote.” While the students
who registered won't be able to vote until they turn 18, they will be automatically added to the voter register if they participated in the drive. Many of the students received a souvenir water bottle with the @browardvotes emblem.
“I was thrilled,” said Stoneman Douglas
junior Jo. “I can't wait to vote in my first election when I turn 18. Hashtag adulting!”
Scott emphasized that becoming an active voter would have an impact on who our government leaders are at every level, from local to national. "I'll see you at the polls," he said.

FEELING STRESSED? LONELY? ANXIOUS? IT’S OK TO NOT BE OK!
DIAL 9-8-8
COUNTYWIDE INITIATIVE AIMS TO CREATE DIALOGUE AND PROVIDE RESOURCES TO ANYONE IN NEED
We all have one thing in common now- we’re all living in this new “normal”. Whether you are experiencing stress, loneliness, or anxiety, remember that we’re all in this together. It’s OK to not be OK. It’s essential to CARE for one another with respect; COMMUNICATE and listen without judgment and CONNECT those who need help with support services in our community. If you or someone you know needs help, dial 9 -8-8 today.
Mental health and well-being is different for everybody. When a person is experiencing challenges to their mental health, it is important that they have the help and support necessary to guide them through it. Mental health challenges can affect a person’s moods, behaviors, and even their cognitive functioning. The norm in some cultures may be to avoid talking about problems, feelings, or mental health concerns. While some individuals can have healthy coping mechanisms, many people often struggle to find proactive methods of dealing with emotional turmoil or unresolved trauma. For any stressful situation, this initiative encourages talking about the feelings you have, providing an open dialogue, and promoting the fact that it is OK to talk about feelings of stress, isolation, and anxiety.
United Way of Broward County partnered with the Broward Behavioral Health Coalition, and Department of Children and Families to prioritize mental health struggles in its county wide initiative that promotes “It’s OK to not be OK” and the newly created 9-8-8 hotline. The goal is to provide an outlet of support to the community facing challenges with mental health, or any feelings of stress, isolation, and anxiety. Thus, creating a space for dialogue and offering the very much-needed resources during difficult times by providing someone to talk to.
You might notice the “It’s OK to Not be OK” message around the community which directs people to call the 9-8-8 hotline for support. Please help us to share the message. Trained counselors provide callers with guidance and free resources that will help in most situations. United Way of Broward County’s Commission on Behavioral Health & Drug Prevention’s website, drugfreebroward.org, also provides a prevention resource center with tool kits that provide support for mental and behavioral health issues.
Are you feeling stressed, lonely, anxious or depressed? Or do you know someone who is feeling this way? It’s OK to not be OK. Support and Help are available. And, now more than ever, it is essential to come together and CARE for one another with respect; COMMUNICATE and listen without judgment and CONNECT those who need help with support services in our community. If you or someone you know needs help, please dial 988 today. #ItsOKtoNotbeOK

Saving Wildlife in Our Urban Jungle
From time to time, everyone needs someone to look out for them. Even wild animals. The South Florida's Wildlife Center - a non-profit organization that's dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of native wildlife species looks out for our community’s native wildlife on a daily basis. Since 1969, the center has become a cornerstone of the community and an inspiration to animals in distress in Broward, Palm Beach, and Miami-Dade counties. They're able to provide their services thanks to the generous donations, grants, and partnerships they receive.
The center's mission is to deliver compassionate care to injured, orphaned, or displaced animals and aim to return them to their natural habitats. With the help of a team of dedicated wildlife professionals and volunteers, the center tirelessly works to provide medical treatment, food, shelter, and a secure environment for the animals. In a year, they treat more than 13,000 animals and have an impressive release rate of 50% for animals brought to the center.
Apart from rehabilitating animals, South Florida's Wildlife Center also plays a crucial
role in education and community outreach. They offer informative programs and tours to schools, community groups, and individuals, with the goal of increasing awareness and appreciation of native wildlife. Their programs cover a range of topics, including conservation, wildlife rehabilitation, and coexistence with wildlife. Plus, they also offer volunteer opportunities for those who wish to make a difference in the lives of animals.
It's worth noting that the center faces some obstacles. The unique environment of South Florida poses several threats to native wildlife, such as habitat loss, pollution, and collisions with cars and buildings. Additionally, they rely solely on donations to operate and provide the best possible care to the animals, which can be challenging at times. Despite these challenges, the team's unwavering dedication and passion for wildlife enable them to overcome the obstacles and continue to make a difference in the lives of animals and the community.
In conclusion, the South Florida's Wildlife Center is an incredible organization that's doing fantastic work in helping to preserve native wildlife species. Their efforts to rescue, rehabilitate, and release animals, as well as their educational programs and community outreach, are truly commendable. Kudos to the center and their team for the amazing work they do!

ONCE YOUR CHILD TURNS 18 THE RULES OF PARENTING CHANGE
By Andrea L. Jakob, Esq.
In honor of May’s flowers, Graduations and Mother’s Day, I’d love to share one of my favorite checklists for parents who have a new graduate in the family!
The rules of parenting change completely once your child turns 18. They may still be financially dependent on you, but suddenly they are legally an adult in the eyes of the law. This can be both exciting and nerve-wracking! The two documents that are part of your toolbox for a new adult are a Durable Power of Attorney, a Health Care Surrogacy, and a HIPAA Release.
A. HIPAA Release
Once your child turns 18, it is illegal for a doctor to discuss their medical conditions with you—even during a life-threatening emergency. Even if you’re still paying the bills.
The Federal Law that controls our private medical information is called “HIPAA.” While you want your medical information protected, you may have a disaster on your hands if your child is unable to communicate their medical needs. That’s because in this situation, “protecting” your child’s privacy actually means preventing their doctor from sharing information with you.
B. Health Care Surrogate Designation In Florida, we have a specific document to guarantee that if your newly minted adult is hospitalized, you’ll be able to make important medical decisions regarding what type of treatment should be provided.
C. Durable Power of Attorney A Durable Power of Attorney (“POA” for short) enables parents to access and manage their child’s finances. The Durable POA can be useful in many situations. If bank accounts, a car lease, a rental agreement, or other assets are titled in the name of the student, the POA avoids the expensive and drawn-out court process of having to be appointed guardian by the court for your own child.
The POA can be useful as it allows parents to act on a child’s behalf on all financial matters or set limits for financial circumstances. The POA also helps if your young adult has an overdrawn bank account and isn’t addressing the issue in a responsible manner.
Think of it as a superhero cape for you - you can swoop in and help your new adult with everything they may need help with.
D. Other discussions you may have with your graduate: A conversation about budgeting and financial responsibility. Talk to them about the importance of living within their means and show them how to make a budget.
Discuss the importance of good credit. Talk to your graduate about the dangers of racking up debt, and teach them how to build and maintain a good credit score.
Help protect their online identity. Talk to them about the dangers of sharing personal information online, and teach them how to create strong passwords.
Discuss the importance of networking. Encourage your child to meet new people and make connections in their field of interest.
Encourage your graduate to dream big. Talk to them about their long-term goals, and help them figure out what steps they need to take to achieve those goals.
Finally, and most importantly, talk to your new adult about work-life balance. Encourage them to make time for the things they love, as well as working toward their future.

Calling ALL Artists Submit Your Artwork for the Utility Box Public Art Program
The Town of Davie is conducting an open call to artists interested in participating in the Utility Box Wrap Public Art Program. Applications will be accepted now through Friday, May 26, 2023, by midnight. The original works of art will be selected for vinyl wraps on traffic signal boxes throughout the Town.
The Utility Box Public Art Program aims to add a creative touch along our transit corridors by transforming traffic signal boxes into pieces of art. This beautification effort will enhance the experience for visitors and residents alike and help prevent the vandalization of boxes.

Artwork should reflect the theme “What does Davie Mean to You?” The primary focus areas for the artwork should include areas of historical significance, equestrian, rodeo, agriculture, wildlife, nature, and the environment. Each winning design selected will be compensated $200 for one-time reproduction rights of the artwork.

South Florida is Not Always BRIGHT SKIES & BEAUTIFUL BEACHES
South Florida is known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant nightlife, and warm weather year-round. However, our home is also no stranger to the devastating effects of hurricanes. Over the years, the region has been hit by numerous storms that have left a lasting impact.
The history of hurricanes in South Florida dates back centuries. Native American tribes who lived here long before European settlers arrived experienced the effects of hurricanes just as we do today. Unfortunately, there is limited information about these storms.
According to Edward N. Rappaport; Jose Fernandez-Partagas & Jack Beven of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the first recorded tropical cyclone to affect the area that is now the state of Florida occurred in 1523, when two ships and their crews were lost along the western coastline. A total 159 hurricanes are known to have affected the state prior to 1900, destroying more than 100 boats and costing thousands of lives.
In 1935, a major hurricane hit South Florida, this time with catastrophic consequences. The storm, known as the Labor Day
Hurricane, had winds of over 185 miles per hour and caused massive storm surges that flooded much of the region. The hurricane caused over 400 deaths and left many communities in ruins.
In the decades that followed, South Florida continued to be hit by hurricanes, although the severity of these storms varied. In 1992, Hurricane Andrew made landfall just south of Miami, causing over $27 billion in damage and leaving over 250,000 residents without power. The storm was a wake-up call for many in the region, who realized that they needed to be better prepared for future storms. Building Codes were changed after the hurricane to ensure future structures would fare better.
In recent years, South Florida has been hit by several major hurricanes, including Hurricane Irma in 2017. The storm caused widespread flooding and left many residents without power for weeks. Although Broward County was largely spared from the worst of the storm, we still felt its effects. In the aftermath of the storm, many residents were left to deal with the damage to their homes and businesses.
Despite the many hurricanes that South Florida has experienced over the years, residents and officials have learned to be better prepared for these storms. Broward County has invested in infrastructure improvements, including flood control measures and stronger buildings, to help minimize the damage caused by hurricanes. The county also has a robust emergency management system in place, which helps to ensure that residents are informed and prepared for potential storms.
In a recent statement, Broward County Mayor Steve Geller emphasized the importance of being prepared for hurricanes. "We know that hurricanes are a part of life here in South Florida," he said. "That's why we need to make sure that we're doing everything we can to prepare for these storms and protect our residents."
South Florida has a long and storied history of hurricanes, with Broward County being no exception. We are now better prepared than ever to manage the impacts these storms can have. It is still incumbent on all of us to be prepared.

Weather the Storm WITH A ‘HURRICANE KIT’
Living in South Florida offers numerous advantages, from unparalleled weather to world-renowned beaches and a vibrant culture. However, along with the good comes the possibility of experiencing hurricanes.
Given the potential for storms, it's important to be prepared and think ahead. After a hurricane, you may need to survive on your own for several days, which means having your own food, water, and other supplies. This is where a disaster supplies kit comes in handy.
To create your kit, the Federal Emergency Management Agency recommends assembling a collection of basic items that your household may need in case of an emergency. You should store these items in one or two easy-to-carry containers, such as plastic bins or large duffel bags, and make sure they are stored inside air-tight plastic bags.
A BASIC EMERGENCY SUPPLY KIT SHOULD INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING RECOMMENDED ITEMS:
• Water (3 gallons per family member)
• Non-perishable food (3 days worth)
• Battery-powered cell phone charger
• NOAA Weather Radio with extra batteries
• Flashlight with extra batteries
• First Aid Kit
• Whistle
• Package of Surgical Masks (to filter out contaminated air)
• Plastic Sheeting and Duct Tape
• Moist Towelettes
• Garbage Bags
You may also want to consider adding these additional items to your kit:
• Prescription medications and glasses
• Infant formula, food, and diapers
• Pet food and extra water for your pets
• Copies of insurance documents, bank records, etc.
• Cash
• Sleeping bags or blankets
• A complete change of clothes for each family member
• Fire extinguisher
• Matches or a lighter
• Personal hygiene items
• Books, games, puzzles
By being prepared with a disaster supplies kit, you can ensure that you and your family are ready to weather any storm that may come your way.

Preparing Your Small Business FOR THE UNEXPECTED
As a business owner in South Florida, preparing for a hurricane is crucial to safeguard your employees, customers, and assets. With the frequency of hurricanes in the region, it's essential to have a comprehensive hurricane plan in place.
Here are some steps that business owners can take to prepare for a hurricane:
1. SECURE YOUR BUILDING: Before a hurricane strikes, make sure that your building is secure. Cover windows and doors with shutters or plywood, and clear gutters and drains to prevent flooding. If necessary, consider reinforcing your building's roof and walls.
2. DEVELOP A HURRICANE PLAN: Develop a plan that outlines how your business will operate before, during, and after a hurricane. Identify critical business functions and the resources needed to continue operations. Assign tasks and
responsibilities to employees, and ensure that everyone understands the plan.
3. COMMUNICATE WITH EMPLOYEES AND CUSTOMERS: Keep employees and customers informed about your hurricane plan. Share information about the storm's progress, business closures, and reopening plans. Make sure that employees know whom to contact and how to stay in touch during and after the storm.
4. BACKUP CRITICAL DATA: Ensure that all critical data, including financial records, customer data, and business contracts, are backed up and stored in a secure off-site location.
5. HAVE AN EMERGENCY KIT: Keep an emergency kit on hand with essential supplies, such as water, non-perishable food, first aid supplies, and batteries.
6. REVIEW INSURANCE COVERAGE: Review your insurance coverage to ensure that your business is adequately covered for hurricane-related damages.
If a hurricane hits, follow your hurricane plan, and prioritize the safety of your employees and customers. After the storm, assess the damage to your building and assets, and document all losses. Contact your insurance company as soon as possible to file a claim.
Several resources are available to help businesses prepare for hurricanes. The Small Business Administration offers guidance on disaster preparedness and recovery, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency provides a Business Emergency Operations Center to support businesses during emergencies.
By taking the necessary steps to secure your building, develop a hurricane plan, communicate with employees and customers, backup critical data, have an emergency kit, and review your insurance coverage, you can help protect your business from the devastation of hurricanes.

CHILDREN AND FLAT FEET When Should I Worry?
By Dr. Michael M. Cohen, DPM, FACFAS
flat foot or fallen arch is referred to medically as pes planus. Foot and ankle specialists understand that flatfoot is a frequently encountered problem in children. In this condition, the foot collapses or loses the gentle curving arch on the inner side of the sole. A pediatric flatfoot is generally divided into 2 sub-groups. The first, a flexible flatfoot is characterized by a normal arch during non-weightbearing and a flattened arch while standing. The flexible flatfoot may be painful (symptomatic) or not painful (asymptomatic). The second of the subgroup is referred to as a rigid flatfoot which is characterized by a stiff flattened arch regardless of whether the child is weight-bearing or not. Such deformities include a congenital vertical talus, a tarsal coalition (a condition where the bones in the foot did not separate properly by childbirth), peroneal spastic flatfoot or traumatic causes. A flatfoot may exist as an isolated problem, or as part of a larger clinical entity. This may include genetically lax ligaments, neurologic or muscular problems, genetic syndromes, and other collagen vascular disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis.
Flexible flat feet are generally considered normal in young children as babies lack a normal arch. The arch subsequently forms fully between the ages of 7 and 10. A study published in a reputable medical journal evaluated 835 children, approximately half of which were boys and girls equally. Using a laser surface scanner, the children’s feet were measured carefully. The results indicated that the prevalence of flexible flatfoot in the group of 3-6-year old children was 44% but the prevalence of symptomatic (painful or pathological) flatfoot was less than 1%. Additionally, 13% of the children were overweight or obese. During adulthood, 15-25% of people may have flexible flatfeet. Most of these adults never develop symptoms. Adults with flexible flat feet likely inherited their condition due to the laxity of their ligaments.
Pediatricians and parents are often the first to recognize foot deformities in infants and children, but too often the problem may go unrecognized for a long period of time.
When a flatfoot is being evaluated, a foot and ankle specialist would include a thorough family history which involves a review of the medical conditions including a history of trauma or problems during childbirth. Investigating the progressive flatfoot in a child’s family often gives
Aa physician an idea how the condition will evolve. After this, a comprehensive physical exam should be conducted. The foot and ankle specialist will want to evaluate the foot for areas of tenderness and observe the child during gait (walking). There is a prominent bulge in the arch, a heel that leans to the outside resulting in toes that are easily visualized from behind and referred to as the "too many toes sign". Besides evaluating the foot, the child with a flat foot must be examined for possible contributing factors occurring above the level of the foot and ankle which would cause the foot to compensate by becoming flat. This would include the hip and knee, and lower leg. At times a leg length discrepancy may result in a flatfoot condition as well.
The flatfoot is often associated with a number of subjective symptoms which would include pain in the foot leg and knee as well as other postural complaints. Interestingly a flatfoot has been shown to have a direct relationship with medial compartment knee arthritis and bunion deformities later in life. Additionally, a study published in a pediatric journal indicated that a relationship between adolescent bunions and flat feet was 8 to 24 times greater than expected. The flatfoot can result in decreased endurance and voluntary withdrawal from physical activities. At times apparent may relate that the child is clumsy and prone to falling frequently. Children may find it difficult to climb or run and prefer not to participate in sports.
Imaging studies may include standing x-rays, CT scans or magnetic resonance imaging. This will help make a determination as to what the cause of the flatfoot deformity is, particularly if it is rigid. Additionally, a blood test can be ordered to rule out certain arthritic or inflammatory conditions if a larger clinical picture is suspected.
The nonpainful or asymptomatic flexible flatfoot may be physiologic or non-physiologic. Most flexible flat feet are physiologic, asymptomatic, and require no treatment. Physiologic flat feet follow a natural history of improvement over time. Periodic observation may be indicated to monitor for signs of progression. In these patient’s treatment is generally not indicated and patients often do very well.
The non-physiologic flatfoot is characterized by progression over time. The degree of deformity is much more severe in non-physiologic than in physiologic flexible flatfoot. The degree of
deformity is visibly much more evident causing the patient to compensate in several ways. Pain and symptoms resulting from flexible flat feet include discomfort on the inside of the foot pain, on the outside of the ankle, leg, and knee.
Initial treatment for the flatfoot deformity includes stretching exercises, orthotics, at times immobilization if the patient is limping, physical therapy to strengthen muscles and tendons which hold up the arch, and stretching exercises for the heel cord which is often very tight. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories may also be used, but not advised on a chronic basis. If there is a positive clinical response and symptoms improve the patient will just be monitored.
Lastly, when all non-surgical treatment options have been exhausted surgical intervention can be considered. This may be provided in a variety of ways depending on the diagnosis and degree of deformity. Surgical treatment may consist of tightening of the ligaments and lengthening of tendons, a technique referred to as arthroereisis which involves the insertion of a small metallic implant through a small incision between the joints of the foot to restore the arch, to more aggressive traditional treatments such as cutting and realigning bones, known as osteotomies, or fusing the bones in the hindfoot together to stabilize the very deformed unstable flatfoot. In conditions such as a tarsal coalition, the area involved in the coalition is cut away so the bones can move more freely on each other.

How Good Is Your Alignment?
The single most important – and frequently overlooked – full swing fundamental in golf is the setup position. So, here are some stepby-step tips for how to take your stance and achieve that per fect setup.
Alignment in the Golf Stance
At address your body (feet, knees, hips, forearms, shoulders and eyes) should be positioned parallel to the target line. When viewed from behind, a right-handed golfer will appear aimed slightly left of the target. This optical illusion is created because the ball is on the target line and the body is not.
By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional
Foot Position
Your feet should start out shoulder-width apart but adjust depending on whether you’re playing woods/long irons, middle irons or short irons.
The feet should be shoulder-width (outside of the shoulders to the inside of the heels) for the middle irons. The short iron stance will be two inches narrower and the stance for long irons and woods should be two inches wider. The target-side foot should be flared toward the target from 20 to 40 degrees to allow the body to rotate toward the target on the downswing. The back foot should be square (90 degrees to the target line) to slightly open to create the proper hip turn on the back swing. Your flexibility and body rotation speed determine the proper foot placement.
Ball Position in the Golf Stance
The position of the golf ball in one’s stance varies depending on the club used. The ball placement in your setup position varies with the club you select. Your middle irons should be played in the middle of your stance.
The correct ball position for the long irons and fairway woods plus your driver is to be played off the inside left heel.
Keep Your Weight on the Balls of Your Feet
Your weight should be balanced on the balls of the feet, not on the heels or toes. With short irons, your weight should be 60% on the target-side foot. For middle iron shots the weight should be 50/50 or equal on each foot. For your longest clubs, place 60% of your weight on the backside foot. This will help you swing the club on the correct angle on the back swing.
The Final Setup Positions
Always practice proper alignment out on the driving range by placing two clubs down on the ground parallel to each other after you feel you are properly aligned to your intended target and see how well you are lined up. Better yet, while on the golf course ask your playing partner to stand behind you and see if you are properly aligned. The best way is to take a lesson from your local PGA Professional just on alignment. They are the experts in the game

s I sit down to write this article, I am trying out a new tooth whitening product which we are considering for the practice. We have reviewed the research provided by the manufacturer, have listened to paid experts who lecture on its behalf and have read over the instructions provided for use. Still the last test is personal. The doctor has become the patient. There is no doubt that cosmetic dentistry has become a big part of public demand over the past decade. The surprising part is that the market has opened up to a younger population. We are asked more and more about the appropriate time to consider dental bleaching for children as well as the effectiveness of over-the counter products. Let’s first examine the downside/side effects of bleaching. The most commonly documented side effect is sensitivity. This can be from sensitivity of teeth or gum tissue, but is usually the later due to an ill fitting tray. The good news is that sensitivity goes away after the bleaching product is discontinued. The second most common side effect is leakage of the margins of a present restoration. What this

Ameans is that it may shorten the lifespan of a filling or crown. However, well prepared/fitting dental work would tend to be less affected. What then is the benefit of a professional system vs. an over-the counter system (OTC)? The main difference between the two is the concentration of the active ingredient which is carbamide peroxide in most cases. Professional systems work faster, make teeth whiter, and results tend to last longer. OTC systems are more accessible and are usually less expensive. In my opinion, the most important part of the process, no matter which system is used, is making whitening part of the dental treatment plan. For example, whitening may have no effect on specific teeth which were previously traumatized. Whitening in this situation may make the traumatized tooth/teeth more noticeable due to the increased contrast with other teeth after bleaching. Additionally, if you are planning new dental work, it may make sense to whiten the teeth before choosing a shade for your new dental restorations. The reason is that when whitening your teeth, dental restorations will not whiten with your teeth. For these reasons and many others, a discussion with your dentist may save you heartache and possibly money in the long run.
Local expertise you can trust.
Parents often point out a concern that their child’s front teeth are darker than back teeth. In children between the ages of 7 and 12 this is usually due to the contrast between baby teeth and permanent teeth. Baby teeth are typically lighter in color by multiple shades. The reason for this is differing thicknesses of the layers of the teeth which reflect light differently. Bleaching teeth at this stage is not advised because this would create a situation in which there will be more noticeable contrast each time a new tooth erupted. In fact, we recommend waiting until all baby teeth fall out before considering whitening.
From the vantage point of the dental professional, we are looking for a product that whitens teeth effectively and lasts as long as possible. It should cause only minimal sensitivity (hopefully none) and have an easy delivery system. On that note, I will excuse myself to remove my trays and check out my new shade.

SelfView™ is the fast , accurate, and confidential mental wellness assessment that you take privately.
Know
Your Body. Know Your Mind.
By Alex van Putten
Mental health is an integral part of our overall well-being. It refers to our emotional, psychological, and social well-being and influences how we think, feel, and act. Good mental health allows us to lead a happy and fulfilling life, while poor mental health can harm our body, appearance, enjoyment of life, work, and relationships.
Here are some of the personality traits that are associated with good mental health: Positive self-esteem means that you have a positive self-image and high self-esteem. You feel confident about yourself and your abilities and can recognize your strengths and weaknesses.
Emotional resilience allows you to cope with life's challenges and bounce back from setbacks. You can regulate your emotions, manage stress effectively, and maintain a positive outlook.
Healthy relationships are part of your life that lead to healthy and fulfilling relationships with family, friends, and colleagues. You can communicate effectively, resolve conflicts, and maintain meaningful connections with others.
Productivity implies that you function effectively in your daily life. You can focus on tasks, make decisions, and be creative and innovative.
Enjoyment of life is associated with a sense of purpose and joy. You can engage in activities that you are fulfilling, pursue
your interests, hobbies, and sports, and feel satisfied with your achievements.
It’s important to note that mental health is not static; everyone has unique mental health needs. It’s common for people to underestimate the impact underlying mental health issues, such as anxiety, can have on their overall well-being. Sometimes, people may not even be aware that they are experiencing symptoms of anxiety, depression, or other mental health challenges holding them back.
Therefore it’s essential to get a mental health checkup regularly to know the level of your emotional health, just like you get a blood test to understand your physical health. SelfView is accurate and used in top medical centers to support research. We are making it available to you for the first time. Davie hosts Hippity Hoppity Spring & Splash-and-Dash Egg hunts
On Saturday, April 8th, the Bamford Sports Complex in Davie hosted its annual Hippity Hoppity Spring Egg Hunt. The event was filled with smiling faces and baskets full of treats, making it a truly egg-citing affair. Children aged 10 and under were able to participate in the egg hunt, searching for special eggs to win prizes.
The Bamford Sports Complex was the ideal location for this family event. Several sports fields at the 82-acre park were transformed into a magical field of hidden surprises. Visitors also took advantage of the park's picnic areas, playgrounds, and walking trails.
In addition to the egg hunt, there were plenty of free, family-friendly activities to enjoy, including a petting farm, train rides, inflatable
rides, and food trucks. Attendees even had the opportunity to snap a photo with Mr. Peter Cottontail himself!
For those looking for a unique egg hunt experience, the Pine Island Aquatics Center hosted a Splash-and-Dash Egg Hunt. Here, lifeguards tossed more than 500 eggs into the pool for children to collect. Every participating child went home with a free gift bag.
There's something exciting about searching for hidden eggs, and the possibility of finding a surprise inside each one adds to the thrill. It's a chance to enjoy the spring weather and engage in some friendly competition. Plus, once the hunt is over, there's the excitement of opening up the eggs and discovering what's inside!
