Flamingo Gardens Orchid Society

Javier Morejon is a native of Miami who started growing orchids around 1987 and has been an active grower for the last 35 years. He has a collection of over 250 orchids including several species and hybrids of Bulbophyllums. He believes these are among the best to grow in South Florida and will be showing us how he grows and mounts these interesting and unusual orchids. Aden Perry Hero Run & Celebration

Join members of the community for a 5K run/walk followed by BBQ, a live TJ and Tribute Band with great food, drinks and more to celebrate the life of Aden Perry. Aden tragically lost his life attempting to save a fellow teen who had crashed his car into a lake. The 5K honors his memory and helps raise money to help students on their academic journeys through the Aden Perry Good Samaritan and Scholarship Fund. Federal Income Tax Filing Deadline

Don’t forget to file your tax return (or request an extension). All United States taxpayers are required to file a return with the Internal Revenue Service that shows their income from last year. Did you know that the Federal income tax was first introduced in 1861 as a way to help pay for the Civil War? The original law was subsequently found to be unconstitutional and revoked. The Sixteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution reinstated the national income tax in 1913.

The Town of Davie brought back its outdoor Sounds of the Town concert series featuring live music from local bands. ORANGE BLOSSOM JUBILEE: A CELEBRATION OF HERITAGE AND HARMONY IN DAVIE

Cowboy Town’s biggest event of the year was a huge hit! Thousands came from far and wide to celebrate The Town of Davie’s roots at this year’s Orange Blossom Festival and Parade. More than 200 floats, bands, and groups participated in the parade, followed by three days of festivities at Bergeron Park. Music was on tap each day as participants danced the night away. There were also dozens of local vendors on site with home-made crafts and foods, a petting zoo, carnival rides, and more.

The Orange Blossom Festival is a long-standing tradition in Davie. It is a celebration of the town's agricultural roots and heritage and is named after the orange groves that once dominated the area.

STATUE UNVEILED HONORING BROWARD COLLEGE DONOR

THE LATE ROBERT “BOB” ELMORE

Broward College Foundation celebrated the legacy of the late Robert “Bob” Elmore with the unveiling ceremony of a bust in his likeness during a special reception to honor the esteemed Broward College donor.

Gifted by Elmore’s partner, Joan, and sculpted by renowned international artist Nilda Comas, the beautiful bronze bust is on display in the stairwell of the library on Broward College’s Central Campus in Davie, Florida.

“Mr. Elmore truly loved Broward College, and he leaves behind an incredible legacy that continues to inspire our students to become the best that they can be,” said Megan R. Cottle, Vice President for Advancement and Chief Development Officer for the Broward College Foundation. “Beyond his generous financial contributions, he was especially generous with his time by mentoring students and collaborating with faculty.”

The Robert "Bob" Elmore Honors College at Broward College, named in his honor, strives to provide a rigorous, relevant, and coherent experience for Broward College students. Every aspect of the Honors College, academic, extracurricular, and social, is organized around the Four Pillars of Honors Education: Critical Thinking, Service, Research, and Leadership.

Elmore’s generosity created transformational opportunities for students to succeed, including Honors College alumnus Robert Diaz. “Bob turned his vision into a reality through his constant support of both students and faculty,” said Diaz, who today serves as Senior Director STEM ACCESS Project at Broward College. “His impact is exponential, and now it’s my privilege to pay it forward and carry on his legacy by sharing the gifts I was given.”

Elmore passed away in 2010 at the age of 91. He retired as a successful paving company executive and was a philanthropist who supported more than 50 nonprofit organizations. His community involvement earned him the Lifetime

Philanthropic Achievement Award from the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

“Some of my happiest memories with Bob were from our time spent at Broward College and in conversation with the many honors students we hosted at our home,” said Joan Elmore. “Although he lost his sight, he always had a great vision for the college community and loved inspiring the next generation of future leaders.”

Joan also served as a mentor to students at Broward College. “Having Joan as my mentor has been a blessing,” said Maria Quintero, a sophomore at Broward College who is studying interactive

design. “The Elmore family has been very gracious and given so much to the community while expecting nothing in return. I’m really excited to learn more and see where this mentorship leads me.”

Attending the ceremony were alumni and current students from the Honors College, the Elmore family and friends, and faculty and staff, including Dr. Quakish Liner, Dean of the Robert “Bob” Elmore Honors College; Dr. Lulrick Balzora, Dean of Social Behavioral Sciences & Human Services; and Dr. Monique Blake, Dean of Libraries and Academic Success Centers.

How long have you been at Wellpath?

I have been with Wellpath since 2018. Previously I was with the company from 2006-2011 as the Mental Health Director at the Shelby County Jail in Memphis. How did you get into correctional medicine?

I was lucky enough to get into corrections when I moved to Memphis from South Florida in 2006. The opportunity interested me as my background at that point was in acute care psych hospitals and forensic psychology. I saw

correctional mental health as the perfect blend of both of those backgrounds.

What is your why? What gets you up every day to do this important work?

“We have the privilege of being able to help anyone in our care who wants the help and is willing to work with us. We change lives for the better.”

I have worked in a number of settings and have learned I am happiest when my work is mission-driven. We provide services to people who often don’t receive adequate help when in the community. We have the privilege of being able to help anyone in our care who wants the help and is willing to work with us. We change lives for the better.

What is most rewarding about this work?

It is rewarding to see many people who come into our care with mental health challenges accept our care and leave the jail much healthier and more stable. We try to give them hope. That’s why our mantra is “To Hope and Healing.”

What kind of mental healthcare heroes do the best in this unique setting?

People who are not judgmental, work well in a team, want to help the underprivileged and underserved, and understand that anybody can end up in our setting. We must treat our patients like we would want to be treated if we ended up here.

TRUE OR FALSE: If you inherit money in Florida, you must pay income tax on the money received. False, Beneficiaries in Florida do not pay income tax on money received from an estate because inherited property does not count as income.

TRUE OR FALSE: Floridians do not have any Federal Estate Tax: False. Even though Florida doesn’t have an estate tax, you might still owe the federal estate tax, which kicks in for estates worth over $13.61 million for 2024.

TRUE OR FALSE: Proper estate planning can help in taking advantage of tax deductions. True: If you do have an Estate Tax burden, properly structured estate planning can leverage available deductions, potentially reducing the overall tax burden on your estate.

TRUE OR FALSE: A well-crafted estate plan can prevent the need for paying unnecessary taxes. True: A well-crafted estate plan can incorporate strategies to minimize unnecessary taxes, allowing more of your assets to be passed on to your chosen beneficiaries.

Withdrawing certain funds from retirement accounts: some income taxes can be levied on the funds withdrawn from these accounts after the account holder's death (but withdrawals from Roth IRAs are not taxed when someone dies) receiving income from an estate: If income producing property is in an estate there may be a tax on the income received before the property is transferred to the beneficiary.

Selling inherited assets. As mentioned, income taxes don't apply to property received directly from an estate or trust. However, if you sell property that you inherited, the funds you receive may be subject to federal income tax if the asset has gone up in value after the decedent's passing. As an example, if you inherit stock with $20 on the date of death and sell it for $25, the $5 gain would be subject to tax.

FUN FACT: Did you know the most misused Social Security number of all time was 078-05-1120? In 1938, as part of a promotion to sell wallets through Woolworth, a wallet manufacturer wanted to demonstrate how a Social Security card would fit into its wallets. A sample card was placed inside each wallet and displayed the Social Security number of the company’s secretary, Mrs. Hilda Schrader Whitcher. The sample card was half of the size of an actual Social Security card and written in red, with “Specimen” written in bold, over 40,000 people reported 078-05-1120 as their own social security number on tax returns.

JUMPING FOR JOY: Two Babies Born on Leap Year Day at Broward Health

Broward Health welcomed two special arrivals on Leap Year Day, bringing joy and excitement to the families and hospital staff alike. The first arrival was baby boy Amari Garcia, born at Broward Health Coral Springs at 2:52 a.m., weighing 6 pounds 12 ounces. His arrival marked a moment of celebration, filled with love and anticipation for his future.

Not long after, another bundle of joy made her debut at Broward Health Medical Center around 8:00 a.m. This beautiful baby girl, yet to be given her permanent name, weighed 6 pounds 11 ounces. She carries on a cherished family tradition, as her name will be the third generation to begin with the letter “J.” For now, she is lovingly referred to as Baby J, a placeholder for the special name that will soon be hers.

The births of these two babies on Leap Year Day added an extra touch of magic to an already special day. Leap Year, occurring only once every four years is known for its rarity, making these births even more unique and memorable.

As these babies grow and thrive, they will forever hold a special place in the hearts of their families and serve as a reminder of the joy and blessings that each new life brings. Their stories are a testament to the miracle of birth and the incredible journey that awaits them.

March was Women’s History

Month and the Town recognized 6 of Davie’s women as this year's SHEroes. Each one has contributed to the fabric of Davie and interestingly, all share agricultural roots and are tied to the history of our town. Each member of the council introduced their Shero for recognition which they shared with their families.

Councilmember Caryl Hattan selected Shirley Prevatt.

She has been living in Davie since 1956 and has seen Davie transformed right before her eyes. When her family moved to Davie, University Drive was a cow pasture.

When you think about community participation, Shirley has done it all – she has been CERT Certified since 2015; attended the Davie Civilian Police Academy; and served on the Neighborhood Crime Watch called the Orange Blossom Crime Watch team for the Eastside community.

Shirley Prevatt is a retired owner and co-owner of several Davie businesses for over 30 years.

Councilmember Michelle Whitman chose Mary Stone who is a longtime Davie resident who has lived in the South Florida area since 1976 and Davie since 1987.

When Mary’s family moved to South Florida from New York, they bought a horse farm on 100th Avenue and her entire family lived there. When her mom sold the farm, they all bought houses on the same street in east Davie.

Mary is an accomplished real estate agent who has been the recipient of several awards. She has been participating in the

She supports Davie every chance she gets. She was the co-director of the Miss Davie Pageant in 2003 and 2004 where 67 girls competed for their Davie titles.

Vice Mayor Susan Starkey honored our recently retired Fire Rescue Chief Julie Downey.

Julie, a Broward County native, has lived in Davie since 1985. She has over 43 years of fire service experience, with close to 20 of those right here in Davie.

Climbing the ranks, she eventually became the EMS shift supervisor. In 2004, she assumed the Battalion Chief of EMS role with Davie Fire Rescue, leading to her promotion to Assistant Chief in 2005. In 2016, she reached the pinnacle of her career as the Fire Chief of Davie Fire Rescue, the first in Broward County's history.

Councilmember Marlon Luis selected Dr. Joyce Loeser as his recipient for the 2024 Shero Award.

She is a Veterinarian who graduated in 1991 from the University of Florida. After graduating, she interned at Hollywood Animal Hospital in 1991 and became an associate veterinarian there for 6 years.

She specializes in physical therapy, general medicine, and surgery and has had her practice on Flamingo Road since 2002.

She grows food, and for those who love coffee, she has 100 coffee trees and enjoys spending time with her chickens.

As Mayor, I chose a team!!!! Vickie Mize Ulrici and Leanne Sullivan personify the spirit of Davie. They are Hard-working, determined and passionate about the cowboy culture. It seems I have known them forever from

the Davie for Horses shows and the spirited summer belt buckle series for the children through the Davie Rodeo Association. They are a great team and proof that Davie has been and always will be Cowboy Town!!

Vickie Mize Ulrici was born in Hollywood and attended Driftwood Elementary School. She moved to Davie in 1962 and attended the Old Davie School from 2nd to 4th grade. From there, she attended Nova Middle and then graduated from Nova High School.

She worked for the school board at Davie Elementary for 34 years teaching children with special needs.

Vickie’s ties to Davie run deep, her father, Jack Mize became a Davie resident in 1941. Her parents met in 1954 at the Davie Woman’s Club.

I also recognized Leanne Sullivan, a Nurse's Assistant at American Heritage School for 16 years.

Her grandson, who is seven years old, said he would describe her as FUN! (She likes that )

Her daughter said PASSIONATE because she is passionate about her Family, the Rodeo, and the Arena. LOYAL, because she has been a part of Davie Jackpot Rodeo for 41 years; CARING since she works in a clinic and always cares for everyone in her family. But when you ask her, she describes herself as BLESSED.

Leanne's dedication to the Davie Rodeo circuit is genuinely remarkable. For 41 years, she has served as Rodeo Secretary at the Davie For Horses / Davie Rodeo Association. She also spent four years as the Rodeo Secretary of the Florida Junior Rodeo Association and the Florida High School Rodeo Association. Her long-term commitment speaks volumes about her loyalty and passion.

Ankle Ligament Injuries in Teenagers & Adults

The ankle is a complex joint consisting of bones, ligaments, cartilage, tendons and joint lining. The primary motion of the ankle is up and down. It has limited side-to-side motion. When excess motion occurs from side to side, ankle ligaments can tear.

Ligaments connect bones together. Once the ligaments are torn instability can develop. On the outside of the ankle there are three ligaments. The inside of the ankle has five and connecting the tibia and fibula are three more.

Ankle ligament injuries can occur from stepping off of a step and rolling the ankle, to playing sports and coming down and landing on somebody’s foot. It is also very common in women who wear heels and roll their ankle to the outside, causing damage to the ligament structure of the ankle.

When ligament injuries occur, it is most often associated with a feeling of a crack or a pop, and

is associated with pain, swelling, occasionally discoloration and inability to weightbear.

It is always best to evaluate these ankle injuries as soon as possible. A thorough history and physical will allow the doctor to identify the ligaments that have been injured and the extent of the injury. X-rays are taken and occasionally MRIs if the suspected damage is significant.

Treatment is then aimed at reducing the damage to the ligaments and giving the ligaments an opportunity to heal primarily. Treatment for these injuries could be as simple as RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation). For a very simple stretching injury to the ankle ligaments, an ankle brace is used most often. When the ligaments are torn, then immobilization is absolutely necessary. A boot or a cast is applied for two to six weeks. Patients are allowed to immediately weightbear. Cross training is completely allowed. Avoid any type of anti-inflammatory. This will help to reduce the inflammation but at the cost of allowing those ligaments to heal because inflammation is a critical part of the healing process. Physical therapy may be necessary after cast removal. A return to sports

Chronic instability may develop if treatment has not been initiated immediately. This may be corrected with a ligament tightening procedure. Long-term prognosis is almost always excellent.

UNEXPECTED CAVITIES

Call 954-368-9910 to schedule your free quote! A lmost daily, we have a child come in to our office with many more cavities than anticipated. In some instances, they are “regulars” coming in for their six-month checks and everyone present attests to their daily brushing ritual. Still, in a relatively short period of time, these cavities have formed between the teeth. To understand this situation better, it is helpful to look at the underlying causes of cavities.

In order to form a dental cavity, there are certain ingredients which are a must. First of all, cavity causing bacteria must be present. The most notable of these bacteria are the Streptococcus Mutans. Although the thought of bacteria entering the mouth is an unsavory one, it is a fact of life. In fact, these bacteria make a home in our mouth at a very early age and are usually transmitted unintentionally by a child’s caregiver (i.e. when blowing on a hot spoon during feeding time).

The bacteria colonize on our teeth and form a plaque. They use sugars we ingest to increase the size of the plaque. Biproducts from these colonies are acidic. This decrease in pH begins the process of breakdown of the tooth’s outer layer, the enamel. Once this shell is accessed, the bacteria can start to travel through the tooth. Therefore, the main players are bacteria, sugar, and acidity.

We recommend brushing and flossing to reduce the quantities of bacteria and remove sugars left behind after meals. Fluoride can be used to strengthen the enamel. Xylitol products are showing some promising data in the ability to limit the effectiveness of the bacteria. Still, a person who brushes/flosses and goes to the dentist for cleanings and fluoride application can still have cavities depending on intake of certain foods and liquids.

As it turns out, consumption of sugar is not the only advantage that our diet provides the bacteria. Many of the foods and beverages we are consuming are acidic and therefore lower the overall pH in the mouth speeding the process of cavity making. For example, diet soda may have no simple sugars useful to the bacteria, but the carbonation creates a very acidic oral environment. Studies have shown that many of the popular sports drinks are more acidic than batteries used for small appliances. After a little digging, we usually find out that the unexpected cavities are preceded by the intake of acidic beverages.

The bad news is that our modern diet is full of sugary acidic foods. Our children’s heroes promote them in every marketing medium.

Our office philosophy is not to deny our children their treats, but rather to modify eating habits and limit the periods of exposure to certain foods. For example, a child who drinks a sports drink after practice should do so at one sitting rather than doing so throughout the day. We recommend rinsing with water after consuming acidic drinks as it is very effective at balancing pH. If hard candy is eaten, brushing should be done. Sugary snacks should be eaten with meals. Snacks eaten between meals should be of a healthier variety, like fruits veggies and granola. The idea is to be creative rather than restrictive. Happy eating!
