New Year Brings New Beginnings

ew Year’s Day serves as a point in time for many of us to make a change; our New Year’s Resolutions. These resolutions, big and small, can be a helpful way for people to motivate themselves to improve their lives in a positive way. Like many people, our New Year’s Resolutions are focused on living healthier lives: we want to exercise more, eat healthier, and sleep better. To achieve these goals, we must develop new healthy habits. William James, a turn-of-the-century psychologist, was one of the first researchers to study habit forming. He discovered three keys to establishing a new habit: (i) Creating an environment to reinforce the behavior you are seeking; (ii) Sticking to the new routine until the habit is fully formed; (iii) Acting now, without delay. For our resolution to get healthy, we have dedicated Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings to working out. We have pledged to make sure we don’t miss a day, at least for the first two months of the year. If you have a New Year’s Resolution, block out the time, don’t let anyone or anything interfere with your focus, and, in the words of the Nike slogan, Just do it! All schools and non-profit groups in Broward County are invited to participate. Entries may include any type of poem, from haiku to sonnet. Pine Island Road, Davie, FL 33328) by January 11. “Martin Luther King was an extraordinary man,” said Beverly White, who attends the picnic every year. “He stood for peace, justice, tolerance and so much more. His message is still very relevant in today’s world.” Davie residents enjoyed the 2016 MLK festivities.

hen most Davie residents have an emergency, they call the Davie Police Department or Fire Rescue for help. On January 28, they will have an opportunity to meet and learn more about some of the people who serve them at the Town of Davie Police and Fire Expo. Approximately 1,000 people are expected to attend the annual event held at the Public Safety Complex, from 10am to 2pm. Last year, the event was cancelled out of respect for Davie Fire Rescue Chief and Emergency Manager Joseph Montopoli, who passed away on February 1. “The event is a great opportunity for adults and children to interact with our officers and to get to know the Davie Police Department by seeing and learning about many of the services that we provide to the community,” said Lieutenant Ed Smith, Public Information Officer for the Davie Police Department. “The Expo gives us an opportunity to showcase many of our specialized units, the police department building, and our various programs, all in a fun and exciting atmosphere. We really hope that everyone will come out and participate.” Visitors to the Expo will enjoy demonstrations from the Police Motorcycle Unit, SWAT team, K-9 team, Dive team, U.S. Coast Guard, police mounted unit and rappelling exhibition, as well as a fire extinguisher demonstration, CPR demonstra-

tion, and a vehicle extrication drill. Throughout the day, they can explore fire engines, rescue trucks, SWAT trucks, community response vehicles, the smoke trailer, the Crime Scene Unit, and more. They can visit with the Davie Police “Justice League,” as well as Sparky the Fire Dog and McGruff the Crime Dog. They can also tour the inside of Fire Station 65 and the Police Department, where they will see the equipment that the firefighters and police officers use and carry. Children can even try on some of the gear. Local and state agencies will have tables and booths set up with information about Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), stroke awareness, blood pressure checks, child fingerprinting, child car seat safety, drowning prevention, Davie Crime Watch, and more. George Kovacs plans to attend for the fourth time with his three young children. “My kids love visiting with the police officers and fire personnel,” said Kovacs. “They also love all of the demonstrations and trying on the gear. want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. n January 27, Cooper City dads and their sons will have an opportunity to enjoy a special evening together at the Father-Son Adventure Night. If dad is unavailable, grandfathers, step-dads, and uncles are always welcome. The event will be held at the Cooper City Community Center, from 6:30pm-9pm. “Father-son relationships are extremely important to a child’s development,” said Felicia Trainor, Recreation Program Specialist for the Cooper City Recreation Department. “We believe this event provides a positive environment full of fun and entertaining activities to cultivate their bond.” Approximately 100 fathers and sons are expected to attend the night of adventure, which will include dinner, games, activities, and fun. They will rotate around to different activities geared around this year’s “camping” theme. There will be a camp fire, guitar playing, marshmallow roasting, Wii Fishing, archery and other camping related activates. Seating is limited and no tickets will be sold at the door. Tickets are on sale at the Community Center. The cost is $25/ pair and $10 each additional son. Proof of residency is required. The City of Cooper City has several other events throughout the year to promote positive family relationships. All of the events are limited to Cooper City residents and require reservations. At last year’s Mom-Son Night of Fun, held in September, over 100 moms and sons dressed up as their favorite super hero duos and enjoyed an action-packed evening filled with activities, prizes, dancing and dinner. At Grandparents Day, held in September, they enjoyed fun, games, crafts, snacks and an old fashioned ice cream party. At the Annual Daddy Daughter Dance, held in November, daughters enjoyed a memorable “date with dad” at a “Sock Hop” that included an evening of dancing, dinner and fun. n January 14, seniors will have an opportunity to learn more about community programs and services that are available to them at the 3rd Annual Cooper City Senior Lifestyle Expo. The Expo has been so successful in the past that it is moving to a new location this year. The free event will be held in the Cooper City High School cafeteria, 9401 Stirling Road, from 9am to 12noon. “This event offers valuable resources for our senior community,” said Felicia Trainor, Recreation Program Specialist. “From free health screenings to information on community living, our Senior Expo provides an abundance of information in one location to help improve the quality of life for our active adults.” Participants can meet some of the City’s program activity instructors, learn about City services, gather information from vendors on medical services, retirement opportunities, wellness, and more. Organizers are expecting approximately 500 people

The Broward Sheriff’s Office will be on-hand to teach home and car safety tips. Davie Road Race Dash 4 Cash 5K and Mayor’s Mile Challenge Walk Returns BY DEBBY TEICH

n January 22, get in shape, take a walk with the Mayor and raise money for your school at the 2017 Davie Road Race Dash 4 Cash 5K Run and Mayor’s Mile Challenge Walk. All proceeds will benefit the Davie Police Athletic League (PAL) and the Davie Police Memorial Foundation. “We are very excited for this year’s race,” said Officer Tim Albury, Director of Davie PAL. “We encourage the community to come out and get involved by running, walking or just being a spectator along the course cheering everyone on.” The 5K run will begin at 8am at Bergeron Rodeo Grounds and proceed up Davie Road to Nova Drive. Runners will then U-turn back down Davie Road, where they will enter into Broward College and wind around the lake. Runners will then proceed south on Davie Road to the Finish Line. Several high school bands will be located along the race course to provide support for the runners. Mission BBQ will provide sliders and cole slaw for all participants and Menchie’s will be serving yogurt. The overall top three winners, male and female, will receive the following: 1st place ($500), 2nd place ($100) and 3rd place ($50). The top three runners in each age group, male and female, will be presented with medals. All participants will receive finisher medals. During the Mayor’s Mile Challenge Walk, which begins at 8:30am, participants can take a walk with Davie Mayor Judy Paul and benefit area schools at the same time. When they sign up for the Challenge, they pick the school they want

to support. The school with the most participants will win the Mayor’s Cup Challenge trophy. Each school that participates in the event will receive Photos from 2016 race 20% of the proceeds donated back to that school to benefit its programs. Participants are encouraged to wear their school shirts to show their spirit. All participants receive finisher medals. The Davie PAL is a youth crime prevention program that utilizes educational, athletic and recreational activities to create trust and understanding between police officers and youth in the community. Over 600 kids of all income levels are enrolled in flag football, tutoring, boxing, mentoring, Youth Leadership, and a variety of other programs and activities. Through this event, the Davie PAL has raised money to revitalize the boxing program, redesign and create a new teen room with board games, air hockey, pool, video games, and more. he Kiwanis Club of Cooper City is committed to serving the children of the world, as well as those in their own community of Cooper City. On January 28, the club will sponsor the 9th Annual Pancake Breakfast and Garage Sale at Cooper City High School. It is open to the community. The event usually raises $3,000 - $5,000, which is used for scholarships for Cooper City Key Club seniors and to help defray the cost of some events. Breakfast begins at 7:30am and costs $5. It includes pancakes, sausage, pancake toppings, coffee, juice and pastries. Approximately 400 people typically attend the garage sale in search of a variety of old and new items. Vendors can purchase a spot for $25, which includes two parking spaces. They must bring their own tables, chairs and tents. avie residents celebrated the holidays with friends and family in a variety of ways. During the Winter Holiday Lighting of the Greens and Music Under the Stars at Town Hall, they watched the Mayor and Town Council turn on thousands of holiday lights to officially proclaim it

“holiday time” in Davie. During the Jingle Bell Parade, the South Florida Trail Riders paraded their decorated horses down Orange Drive. Santa visited the Old Davie School Historical Museum for Old Davie Christmas, which included pony rides, a petting zoo and more. At the Winter Holiday Snow Play at

Bergeron Rodeo Grounds, children played in 20 tons of snow; took pictures with Santa; and enjoyed a petting farm, bounce houses, slides, a climbing wall and more. Santa also called many of the wonderful children in Davie to tell them how proud he is that they were good all year.

n December 2, the City of Cooper City kicked off the holiday season with Light Up Cooper City at Memorial Park. The family event included mini twinkle lights, children’s activities, visits with Santa, and more. They even saw snow flurries during the community youth performances. Renaissance Charter School won the Holiday Tree Decorating Contest. On December 9, adults had an opportunity to join their friends for a holiday lunch celebration that included music, fun, and games. On December 10, Cooper City children enjoyed a magical meal during Brunch with Santa at Cooper City High School. Davie Teen Invites Public to Screening of Girl Rising BY DEBBY TEICH

welve-year-old Cate Kapp of Davie was searching for a “good deed” to do as part of her Mitzvah project. Since she loves school, she decided to focus on education. When Cate learned about Girl Rising, she knew she had found the perfect project. Girl Rising is a global campaign for girls’ education and empowerment. It uses the power of storytelling to share the message that educating girls can transform societies. On January 17, from 6pm-8:15pm, at Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El, Cate will be screening the documentary film Girl Rising. She will also be hosting a discussion surrounding the film. All ages are invited. “Every girl deserves an education, but right now 66 million girls often face barriers to education that boys do not due to gender, violence, early marriage, trafficking, bonded labor and gender discrimination,” said Cate. “When we help one girl, all girls rise. We can no longer afford to be silent.” In the documentary film, Girl Rising follows the life stories of nine girls from the developing world, who struggle every day for freedom, education and a voice in their home countries of Cambodia, Haiti, Nepal, Ethiopia, India, Peru, Sierra Leone and Afghanistan. Since learning about Girl Rising, Cate has been trying to read as much information as possible

about the issues surrounding the girls in these countries. “I love learning and school,” said Cate. “I can’t imagine being told you can’t go to school, because you are a girl. I would fight every step of the way until I got to attend. I see myself in these girls and I simply cannot walk away from them. One girl with courage is a revolution.” The screening is open to anyone who wants to learn more about this issue. Cate has invited her friends from school, a women’s film group, people in the local community and many others. Girl Rising has provided her with some discussion points and a representative from the organization will join the discussion by Skype. Cate will be accepting a donation of $18 at the door and will have t-shirts to sell as well. One hundred percent of the proceeds will be donated to Girl Rising. A team of certified instructors lead over 100 classes per week in a state-ofthe-art, 7,000-square-foot studio. Ellen is an exercise physiologist, so she is able to develop unique programs that are effective. Davie Police Department Offers Civilian Police Academy COMMUNITY NEWS

f you have ever dreamed of riding in a police car with an officer on patrol, now is your chance. It is one of the many things participants will get to do during the Davie Police Department’s 46th Civilian Police Academy (CPA). It features a series of informative presentations on a variety of topics designed to teach participants about the roles, responsibilities, and functions of the Davie Police Department. The 12-week class usually fills up quickly. The next one begins in February. Members of the 45th Civilian Police Academy class “The Civilian Police Academy gives participants a good understanding of all aspects of the police department,” said Lieutenant Ed Smith, Public Information Officer. “The program allows them to interact with our officers and staff. It also gives them insight into what it is like to be a police officer and how the police department is managed.” This academy is open to all residents of Davie and Southwest Ranches. Attendees have ranged in age from 18 to their 80’s. Some are representatives of HOA’s, while others just want to know more about their local police department. The course includes both classroom and field instructions. Attendees learn about the various responsibilities that face officers, as well as the procedures and techniques used by officers when handling different situations. Some of the topics include: police use of force, legal issues, community policing, crime prevention, firearms familiarization, DUI enforcement, patrol and criminal investigations, and more.

During the course, participants will tour the entire police department, including the crime lab and gun range. They will interact with representatives from each unit within the police department. They will discuss investigations and view crime scene photos. The week prior to graduation, they will have an opportunity to engage in live scenarios that police officers encounter on a daily basis. They will also participate in scenario-based demonstrations from the Canine Unit, Dive Team, Motor Unit, SWAT and others. The class is held on Tuesdays nights, from 7pm - 10pm, in the Community Room at the Davie Police Department, located at 1230 South Nob Hill Road. It is limited to no more than 25 people. undreds gathered to enjoy fun, food and festivities at the 17th Annual Forest Ridge Holly Day Parade and Fair. The theme of this year’s parade was “Jingle Bell Rock.” It included Santa Claus in a vintage Rolls Royce convertible, Cooper City High School Marching Band, NSU Baseball Team, Reef Independent Drum Line, Western and Everglades High Junior ROTC groups, Soroptimist of Davie, Magnolia Service Unit (Brownies), Veterans, South Florida Trail Riders of Broward, floats, classic cars, Mahi Shriners, Forest Ridge Lords & Ladies, dignitaries and more. “Our crowd was much bigger than in years past,” said Kitty Preziosi, event leader of an all-volunteer neighborhood team and co-founder of the parade in 2000. “Many viewers called it our best parade ever.” Over 45 groups participated. They threw candy and beaded necklaces to the crowds that lined the streets. Broward Health Medical Center handed out literature and had their crash dummies on display. Indian Ridge Jazz Band, led by Larry Brewer, entertained the crowds before the parade started. Some of the VIPs included Grand Marshall Davie Fire Chief Julie Downey, Davie Mayor Judy Paul, Town Councilmembers Susan Starkey and Caryl Hattan, Superintendent of Broward County Public Schools Robert W. Runcie, Broward School Board member Laurie Rich Levinson, Indian Ridge Principal Frank Zagari, Billy the Marlin, Seminole Indian Princesses, Victoria Post, Publix “Plato” Dinosaur and others. After the parade, the crowd moved to the Forest Ridge Greens for the fair. They enjoyed refreshments, hot dogs, inflatable fun, face painting, balloon twisting, games, raffles, and more. There were also live stage performances by the Forest Ridge Woman’s Club Dancing Queens, South Florida Cloggers, Pure Dynamics Dance Studio, Police Pipe & Drum Corps of Florida, North Perry Squadron Civil Air Patrol Cadets and others. t’s the beginning of the year and many of you have New Year Resolutions to lose weight so you can look and feel great! But how do you stick to your resolution? Did you know that if you did not get enough calories per day you could actually gain weight? The body sees this as starvation and turns on different glands, such as the adrenal glands in the body, to increase blood sugar that then that gets turned into fat. Do you know what your calorie intake per day should be? Instead of filling out an equation that can lead to false information, test your Resting Metabolic Rate to determine your actual needed caloric intake needed to achieve weight loss. This is done medically, while measuring your exhaled air over a period of time in a specialized machine. ▸▸ Is your metabolism on point? Thyroid optimization is essential to weight loss. An underactive thyroid could sabotage your weight loss efforts. Go one step further in assessing thyroid by testing the active form of thyroid that so often gets missed in annual exams. Most people only get their Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) tested, but if further testing is not done then you may be missing the boat. ▸▸ Are your hormones balanced? Knowing which heart rate parameters to train in is essential for obtaining your goal of weight loss. This can be done through VO2 max testing. This is a specialized in office test that assesses your heart rate and breathing while on a treadmill to determine which heart zones are best for you to train for gaining endurance, strength or weight loss. Care Physicians of Hollywood aims to provide comprehensive primary and preventative medical care that is affordable and accessible to the entire family.

How long has the practice been open? Our original

Hollywood office opened in 1977 and it was a one physician office. Today we offer eight convenient locations from Aventura to Plantation with 17 providers and a wound care center on campus at Taft street that does home visits if needed

What is your background? Where did you

do your training? I was born in Nicaragua and raised in Miami. I went on to receive a minor in Chemistry with a Bachelor in Biological Science from Florida State University. I then received my Medical Degree from Ross University School of Medicine. I did a one year internship in Family Practice at Prince George’s Hospital in Maryland and went on to do a three year residency in Internal Medicine at Crozer Chester Hospital affiliated with Temple University in Philadelphia.

We have specialists in the areas of dermatology, cardiology, optometry, ophthalmology and gastroenterology. We offer acupuncture, on-site labs, immigration and school physicals, glasses and contacts, at hone sleep studies, diagnostic imaging, an in-house pharmacy, diabetic testing and weight loss programs..

Cooper City Teen Collects Chemo Care Packages for Girl Scout Gold Award BY DEBBY TEICH

s a member of Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida Troop #10425, 16-year-old Ashley Klement is dedicated to making the world a better place. She is in the process of earning a Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouts. She will join the ranks of generations of young women who have made a difference, both locally and globally. Ashley joined the Girl Scouts in 1st grade. She has already earned a Bronze and Silver award. For the Bronze, she collected Band-Aids for the Children’s Oncology Department at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. For the Silver, she made dog and cat toys and dog beds for Broward Humane Society. In order to earn the Girl Scout Gold Award, she will need to complete a project that would make a mark on her community and create a lasting impact on the lives of others. She has to develop a plan, raise funds, find helpers and take action. She also has to share her experience with others. Ashley is very familiar with the impact of cancer. She lost her aunt and grandfather to cancer and her grandmother is a breast cancer survivor. For her project, she decided to create Chemo Care packages for patients who are receiving chemotherapy, regardless of their age or gender. Some of the items she is collecting include: hand sanitizer, hard candy, lotion, socks with grips, gum, scarves, bandana hats, blankest, Sudoku books, Kleenex, word search books and more. “My goal is to help over 100 patients feel they are not alone in this and that there are a lot of people here to help them,” said Ashley. “If collecting items and putting together care packages brightens their day, then I have reached my Gold. While delivering packages I would also like to meet some of the patients and just be there to listen to them. wenty-four years ago, Renee Herman initiated a canned food drive to help 25 families in need. As the effort grew and she needed more space, she moved her collection site to Western High School in Davie. The Harvest Drive is now a yearlong project that culminates in an event that takes place every Thanksgiving. It is a classic example of “children helping children.” “We are teaching the children that together we can create a culture of giving,” said Herman. This year, Harvest Drive provided 2,700 families in Broward County with a complete Thanksgiving dinner, plus a week’s worth of groceries. Students at more than 190 schools, as well as churches, temples, neighborhoods, girl/boy scout troops and others conducted drives in order to supply the Harvest Drive with families. non-perishable food that were be distributed to the families. There are 12 high schools and three middle schools that schools that serve as distribution centers, plus 200 participating schools. The families, who are referred by social service agencies and Broward County school social workers, received an average of 10 overflowing bags of groceries containing turkey, stuffing, vegetables, pies and more. They also “shopped” for clothing, shoes, books, and toys. At Western, the entire school got involved in the Harvest Drive, including staff, administration and many clubs. To kick off the effort, students brought non-perishable items to the Homecoming Pep Rally. s I sit down to write this article, I am trying out a new tooth whitening product which we are considering for the practice. We have reviewed the research provided by the manufacturer, have listened to paid experts who lecture on its behalf and have read over the instructions provided for use. Still the last test is personal. The doctor has become the patient. There is no doubt that cosmetic dentistry has become a big part of public demand over the past decade. The surprising part is that the market has opened up to a younger population. We are asked more and more about the appropriate time to consider dental bleaching for children, as well as the effectiveness of over-the counter products. Let’s first examine the downside/side effects of bleaching. The most commonly documented side effect is sensitivity. This can be from sensitivity of teeth or gum tissue, but is usually the later due to an ill fitting tray. The good news is that sensitivity goes away after the bleaching product is discontinued. The second most common side effect is leakage of the margins of a present restoration. What this means is that it may shorten the lifespan of a filling or crown. However, well prepared/fitting dental work would tend to be less affected. What then is the benefit of a professional system vs. an over-the counter (OTC) system? The main difference between the two is the concentration of the active ingredient, which is carbamide peroxide in most cases. Professional systems work faster, make teeth whiter, and results tend to last longer. OTC systems are more accessible and are usually less expensive. In my opinion, the most important part of the process, no matter which system is used, is making whitening part of the dental treatment plan. For example, whitening may have no effect on specific teeth that were previously traumatized. Whitening in this situation may make the traumatized tooth/teeth more noticeable due to the increased contrast with other teeth after bleaching. Additionally, if you are planning new dental work, it may make sense to whiten the teeth before choosing a shade for your new dental restorations. The reason is that when whitening your teeth, dental restorations will not whiten with your teeth. For these reasons and many others, a discussion with your dentist may save you heartache and possibly money in the long run. Parents often point out a concern that their child’s front teeth are darker than back teeth. In children between the ages of 7 and 12, this is usually due to the contrast between baby teeth and permanent teeth. Baby teeth are typically lighter in color by multiple shades. The reason for this is differing thicknesses of the layers of the teeth which reflect light differently. Bleaching teeth at this stage is not advised, because this would create a situation in which there will be more noticeable contrast each time a new tooth erupted. In fact, we recommend waiting until all baby teeth fall out before considering whitening. From the vantage point of the dental professional, we are looking for a product that whitens teeth effectively and lasts as long as possible. It should cause only minimal sensitivity (hopefully none) and have an easy delivery system. On that note, I will excuse myself to remove my trays and check out my new shade. Drs. elocation involves a parent who wishes to move out of this jurisdiction with his/ her minor children. This issue can surface during a divorce or after a divorce has been finalized. The fact that many of the residents of South Florida are originally from another location adds to their desire to move “back home,” where they may have emotional and perhaps financial support. Sometimes a family relocates to South Florida due to a job transfer or a better career opportunity. It may require the couple to move away from the comfort of their home and the security of their family. The problems that a desire to relocate creates cannot usually be resolved by a simple agreement. As an example, mom wants to move back to New Jersey with the parties’ two minor children. They are either in the midst of a divorce or the divorce has already occurred. Dad is choosing to stay in South Florida and has no desire or intention to move back north. Can mom move? Can dad stop her? The answer to each of these questions is “perhaps.” The law in Florida allows a parent and the minor children to relocate a maximum of 50 miles from the address where they reside. This of course can

cause problems as well. If both parents are involved in the children’s lives, a move of 50 miles can drastically change a time sharing schedule. A relocation of even 10 miles can affect a child’s school district. A change of 50 miles will require, more often than not, a modification of the time sharing schedule. Midweek dinners or morning drives to school with the parent remaining in the area will become impossible. This is especially true if the parents are following a 50/50 time sharing schedule. If a move of just a few miles can alter a time sharing plan, imagine how a relocation of hundreds of miles will affect the status quo. The law does, however, allow for relocation under certain circumstances. The court must weigh the benefit to the minor children against the effect it will have on the parent/ child relationship. It’s true that the relocating parent may experience better financial circumstances if allowed to move, but how will the parent/child relationship suffer as a result? There are generally no easy answers. The most important thing to remember is that a parent cannot relocate with a minor child beyond 50 miles without a court order or agreement of the other parent. In reality, even a 50 mile change will usually require a modification to be filed, as long as it affects the current time sharing schedule. The parent seeking to relocate must file a petition and fully inform the other parent of his/her intentions; including address of new residence, purpose in moving and a proposed time sharing schedule. Family court judges will often express the fact that these types of cases are the most difficult to decide. nterest rates are increasing. According to Freddie Mac’s latest survey, the 30-year fixed rate mortgage interest rate jumped up to 3.94% in December 2016. Interest rates had been hovering around 3.5% since June of 2016, and many of you may be wondering why the significant increase. A presidential election creates uncertainty in the markets. As November approaches, many investors pull their funds from the more volatile and less predictive stock market to invest in Treasury Bonds. When this occurs, the interest rate on Treasury Bonds does not have to be as high to entice investors to buy them; therefore, interest rates decrease. Once the President has been elected, investors return to the stock market and other investments, leaving the Treasury to raise rates to make bonds more attractive again. am pleased to report that the town has multiple copies of a document put out by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. It is the small scale horse operations manual, which is intended for use by horse and pony owners who do not typically operate as a business and are characterized as “non-commercial.” It is an educational tool to provide guidance to small scale noncommercial horse owners on equine management practices that will help minimize nonpoint source pollution and protect Florida’s water resources. The documents will be available in the lobby of the Town Hall administrative building. The two officers of our mounted patrol have been highly visible at town events and we are excited that a third officer is now in training. They are regularly patrolling downtown Davie and the trail system, as well as areas in and around mobile home parks. As the unit increases in number, their areas of coverage will also expand. Congratulations and good luck to all. The horses also wear badges and are considered an integral part of our police force. You can view all the tips at the Davie Police website: ▸▸ Always take your keys. Never leave them in the car. Nearly 20% of all vehicles stolen have the keys in them. ▸▸ Always lock your car. Approximately 50% of all vehicles stolen are left unlocked. ▸▸ Never hide a second set of keys in your car. Extra keys can easily be found if a car theif takes time to look. ▸▸ Park in well-lighted areas. Over half of all vehicles thefts occur at night. ▸▸ Park in attended lots. Auto thieves do not like witnesses and prefer unattended parking lots. ▸▸ If you park in an attended lot, leave only the ignition/door key. If your trunk and glovebox use the same key as the door, have one of them changed. Don’t give the attendant easy access to your glovebox and trunk. Upon returning, check the tires, spare and battery to insure they are the same as those you had when parked. ▸▸ Never leave your car running, even if you will only be gone for a minute. Vehicles are commonly stolen at convenience stores, gas stations, ATM’s, etc. Many vehicles are also stolen on cold mornings when the owner leaves the vehicle running to warm up. Leaving your key in an unattended motor vehicle is a crime in some states. ▸▸ Completely close your car windows when parking. Don’t make it any easier for the thief to enter your vehicle. ▸▸ Don’t leave valuables in plain view. Don’t make your car a more desirable target and attract thieves by leaving valuables in plain sight. ▸▸ Park with your wheels turned towards the curb. Make your car tough to tow away. Wheels should also be turned to the side in driveways and parking lots. ▸▸ If your vehicle is rear-wheel drive, back into your driveway. Front-wheel drive vehicles should be parked front end first. hank you, Broward! I am extremely humbled and grateful for your support and overwhelming vote of confidence. On January 3, I will take the oath of office for my second term as Sheriff. This distinct honor is more than a personal victory for me - it’s a victory for all the amazing men and women of the Broward Sheriff’s Office, and for those in our community who support our public safety mission. When I first took office four years ago, I promised to bring fresh ideas to BSO. The ways of the past – where our young sons and daughters were sent to jail for minor infractions, and produced soaring crime rates – was not acceptable. As head of the nation’s largest fully-accredited Sheriff’s agency, BSO is expected to set an example for other law enforcement agencies around the country to follow. Through effective and innovative programs, BSO delivered on these promises - and I’m extremely proud that our dedicated sworn and civilian personnel are a shining example of everything law enforcement should strive to be. Each day, BSO makes a real difference in all of our diverse communities. Crime is at historic lows, our children are given every opportunity to succeed and Broward is safer and more united than ever before. But we cannot be content to rest upon our current successes. As we move forward into the New Year and my second term as Sheriff, we also begin writing a new chapter. The successes of the past four years laid a solid foundation and serve as a launching pad for bigger and better things to come. In the coming months, BSO will roll out numerous initiatives and programs focused on both ensuring the safety of all Broward’s residents, while also taking steps to improve their quality of life. These initiatives will tackle pressing problems with commonsense solutions. As you may know, helping children mature into successful adults is my highest priority. The civil citation and P.R.O.M.I.S.E. programs are huge successes, and I believe an expansion of these programs can produce even more significant results. We must also continue to help those suffering from mental health issues. These are not problem people, but people with problems. We are working on multiple programs to provide them with the assistance they need and deserve. Addressing this issue is a great way we can reduce the growing number of incidents of violence and prevent them from happening here. Mental illness isn’t a crime, and incarceration shouldn’t be the solution. Changes within BSO will also continue to progress. Our proactive bodyworn camera initiative will expand so that all uniformed law enforcement deputies will be equipped with body cameras by the end of 2017. The program is our most visible commitment to providing transparency and enhancing community trust. And, finally, BSO will continue to become more reflective of our multicultural county. Thanks again for your continued support, and I look forward to unveiling more exciting programs to make Broward an even better place to live. If you want to eat a healthy diet, you’ll need to do more than choose the right foods. It’s also important to prepare foods in a healthy way. There are many different methods to cut cholesterol, trim fat and reduce calories without sacrificing taste or spending all day in the kitchen. Here are a few tips to help you serve more savory dishes that are both heart smart and nutritious.

The way you prepare foods is just as important as the foods that are being prepared. ▹ Roast using a rack so the meat or poultry does not sit in its own fat drippings. ▹ Baste with fat-free liquids such as wine, tomato juice or lemon juice instead of pan drippings. ▹ Stir-fry in a wok with vegetable stock, wine or a little bit of peanut oil. ▹ Grill or broil with a rack to allow fat to drip away from the food. ▹ Steam foods in a basket over simmering water.

Now that you have prepared a mouth-watering, heart-healthy entrée, don’t be tempted to add on butter, sauces or dressings that can be high in cholesterol and saturated fat. Instead, try some low-fat flavorings to spice up your meal, such as salsa, horseradish, herbs (oregano, basil, cilantro, thyme, parsley, sage and rosemary), spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, pepper and paprika), mustard, catsup, and reduced fat or nonfat mayonnaise, yogurt or soy sauce.
