Navigating the Back-to-School Season in the Modern Age
As we bid farewell to the sun-kissed days of summer, it’s hard to believe that another school year is just around the corner. With the arrival of August 21st, the first day of school for most children in the area, it’s time to gather the necessary school supplies, select the perfect lunch box, and wrap up those summer reading assignments. However, preparing for school has become increasingly intricate over the past two decades, as technology and educational options have evolved.
Gone are the days of covering textbooks in brown paper bags. The rapid advancement of technology has transformed the way students engage with learning materials. From downloading software onto smartphones, iPads, and Chromebooks, to accessing a vast array of digital resources, students now have a world of knowledge at their fingertips.
After-school programs have blossomed into a diverse range of opportunities, surpassing the traditional offerings of sports and music. Today, students can choose from an array of enriching activities, including computer classes, dual language programs, and much more. Likewise, parents now have an abundance of educational options for their children. In addition to traditional public and private schools, charter schools, home school, and virtual schools have emerged, providing families with a broader selection tailored to their needs.
If your family finds itself in the midst of the back-to-school preparations without a concrete plan, fear not! Our City is here to lend a helping hand. Inside this issue, you’ll discover our comprehensive Back-to-School Guide, designed to assist you in navigating the educational landscape. Packed with valuable information on the area’s top preschools, private schools, and educational programs, as well as an extensive directory of after-school activities ranging from arts to YMCA programs, this curated guide aims to provide practical support as you gear up for the upcoming school year.
Amidst the hustle and bustle of back-to-school preparations, it’s important to savor the remaining weeks of summer. Cherish the sun-drenched days, create lasting memories, and relish the freedom that this season offers. Before you know it, school will be back in session, and a new chapter of growth and learning will begin.
So, take a deep breath, enjoy the fleeting moments of summer, and rest assured that you have the resources and support to embrace the forthcoming school year with confidence.

KEEPS RAISING THE BARRE
If you live in South Florida and have any interest in dance, the odds are good you already know the name. With four nearby locations, including two in the Parkland/Coral Springs area, Dance Theatre has become an integral part of our community, one fabulous dancer at a time.
Accolades? Of course. Dance Theatre has been awarded the prestigious “Reader’s Choice” and “Best in the West” awards multiple times. Trophies? Thousands. Dance Theatre’s elite team of competitive dancers, DTX, consistently receives top awards and overall high scores at virtually every competition they attend.
Testimonials? You bet.
Just ask any mom in the carpool line and they’ll tell you that Dance Theatre has been a home away from home for their children.
So what is it that makes this place so special? “My answer is always the same,” says owner and Director Michelle Gerlick, “We build beautiful, safe, clean facilities, hire the best teachers in the business, and treat each child that walks through our doors as if they were our very own. Our staff is teeming with strong, positive role models that are so important to our students as they mature. We work hard, we have passion, and we care deeply about the impact we have on their lives. When a parent tells me their child has flourished since enrolling, I melt. When past graduates return to say we helped them find success in life, as in dance,
nothing can compare. That’s why we do this.”
If all that wasn’t enough to convince you that Dance Theatre is THE place to train, consider this, they offer a truly comprehensive program where dancers ages 2.5 through adult, beginner through advanced, can take classes in every possible discipline including the basics, like ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, hip hop, contemporary, acrobatics, and pointe, as well as specialty classes like our wildly popular aerial silks!!
In addition, dancers who excel and aspire to become dance professionals may join their elite competitive group, Team DTX, where they can travel to local, regional and national competitions and hone their skills against the best from other schools. Team DTX just returned from the Imagine National Finals in Nashville, where they won multiple national titles including the coveted VICTORY CUP, an award given to the overall highest scoring routine. DTX Director Danielle Mednick also won the Best Choreography Award, and Jules Isaacs took home the title of Junior Miss Imagine.
Dance Theatre is also home to DTC, a performance dance company under the direction of Tara Goodman, which entertains audiences near and far. This past year, DTC performed aboard Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas, at Universal Studios, and the Miami Heat’s
35th Anniversary Celebration, where Michelle took part in the Miami Heat Dancer Alumni Reunion Halftime Show. This coming year, DTC will travel to Nashville to perform at The Grand Ole Opry, and will be the halftime entertainment for the Dolphins-Jets game on December 17th. Go Fins!
▸ For those interested in joining the Dance Theatre family, there are two ways. First, you may call the studios at 954-427-7217 for the Parkland location in the Publix center on 441 & Holmberg Rd., or 954340-1544 for the Heron Bay location in the Publix Center on Coral Ridge Dr., and speak to someone today. You may also register for Fall classes at any time by visiting their web-site www.dancetheatre.net viewing the Fall Schedules, and filling out the simple registration form. Better hurry though, Fall Classes begin Monday August 21st and will fill up quickly!

“I’M COMING HOME”
BCPS SELECTS PETER LICATA AS NEW SUPERINTENDENT
Broward County Public School Board (BCPS) announced the selection of Dr. Peter Licata as its next superintendent. The country’s sixth-largest school district announced the selection after a nationwide search. Licata is set to be in place prior to the start of the 2023/24 school year. He was selected via a 7-2 board vote. East Baton Rouge Louisiana School District Superintendent Dr. Sito Narcisse received the other two votes.
BCPS Board Chair Lori Alhadeff announced the selection, saying, “I am so excited to introduce the next superintendent of Broward County Public Schools, Dr. Peter Licata. I believe he is the transformational leader that we were seeking.”
By joining BCPS, Licata is coming full circle, returning to the school district where he was once a first-grade student at McNab Elementary School in Pompano Beach.
“I’m coming home. We will change Broward County to an A (school district),” Dr. Licata said, “We are down the street from where I was born and where my wife was born.
I feel like a fortunate son to be able to do this.”
Licata began his almost 30-year career in education as a teacher and basketball coach for the School District of Palm Beach County and has continued to advance his leadership career – most recently holding the position of South Region Superintendent. In this role, he oversees 60 schools, 65,000 students, more than 5,000 teachers and four instructional superintendents.
Licata comes from a family of teachers and was inspired to pursue his career by his father.
“It was at my father’s funeral, when thousands of people came to me to say what an impact, as coach and algebra teacher, my father had on their lives. That day I became a teacher.” Licata said during his public remarks at the school board’s public interview.
Licata’s experience includes 15 years of teaching and leading at the middle and high school levels, and 14 years at the district-leadership level as Director
of Secondary Curriculum and Assistant Superintendent, before becoming a regional superintendent.
“Our goal has remained to find the most qualified candidate to lead our schools while maintaining our dedication to excellence in education and to preparing our students to reach their highest potential,” Alhadeff commented. “We are excited to welcome Dr. Licata to Broward County Public Schools.”
During the interview process, the new superintendent laid out his vision to get the school system to become an ‘A’ district.
“It’s my vision and mission that every child that starts school at BCPS has an experience as memorable as mine with the same opportunities. I know being born and raised in Broward County doesn’t automatically qualify me as the best candidate, but I believe it gives me a unique perspective and knowledge of the county… Broward County is where I was born, raised, married, and I now want to make it the best educational system in all of Florida as superintendent.”

August UPDATE
By State Rep. Christine HunschofskyIt is so hard to believe that the summer is already slowly coming to an end and that the school year is about to start up again. As a mom of two children who are now grown up, I can certainly relate to those of you sending your children off to preschool, kindergarten, or college for the first time, and it can be hard. However, be assured that your child can manage the new situation, and more importantly, let them know that you know they can handle it and that you will always be there to support them. I wish everyone a wonderful rest of the summer and a great start to the new school year.
We are all looking forward to a great 2023/2024 school year! As we prepare to go back to school, the Florida Legislature approved a 14-day Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday this year to help alleviate the cost of school supplies. The sales tax holiday takes place July 24 - August 6, 2023, and covers a whole range of Back-to-School supplies. For a full list of qualifying items, please visit www.floridarevenue.com.
Broward Public School students return to school on August 21, while teachers, administration, and staff go back on August 14. As we head back to school, please be mindful of the school zones and look out for students crossing the road or riding bicycles to get to school. Please allow yourself extra time in the morning so that you are not in a rush and can be fully attentive while driving.
One of the issues I have been very involved within the Florida Legislature is mental health. In 2021, I was honored to sponsor legislation that established the Commission on Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder. Former Speaker Chris Sprowls and current Speaker Paul Renner both appointed me to serve on the Commission. Currently, I also chair our Children and Youth Behavioral Health Subcommittee. Over the summer, we have had many meetings to work on recommendations for the Commission to approve. On August 15, the Commission will be meeting in person in Orlando. For those who are interested in following the work we are doing and/or joining our meetings remotely, please visit https://www.myflfamilies.com/services/samh/ commission-mental-health-and-substance-use-disorder.
My team and I are always available to help in any way we can. Please reach out to us if we can be of assistance either via email at HDist095@myfloridahouse.gov or at 954-9565600. We have an email newsletter we send out on a regular basis with information about District 95, the legislative process, and resources that are available in the community. If you would like to be added to our newsletter list, please email us with “subscribe” in the subject line. Additionally, connect with me on social media to receive timely District 95 updates. Coral Springs is home to some of the top-rated public, charter, and private schools, and we remain proud of the many accomplishments of the students and professionals who attend and work at our schools. They are true difference-makers in our community.
Residents: sip, savor, and save the date – the city’s first-ever Budget & Brews education series will take place during the last week of August. Residents are invited to join members of the Coral Springs Budget & Sustainability Department to enjoy specially blended coffees, teas, craft beers, and more at popular Coral Springs cafes and eateries. The goal is to interact with members of our Budget & Sustainability team who will be on-hand to answer questions and share details about our city’s budget process. These informative sessions are free, but the cost of food and drinks is an additional fee. A full list of dates, times and locations can be found at CoralSprings.gov/Brews.
Tickets are still available for the International Dinner Dance taking place on Saturday, August 26 at 7 p.m. at the Marriott Heron Bay (11775 Heron Bay Blvd.) The event is presented by Al Hendrickson Toyota. PARKLAND UPDATE
By Mayor Rich WalkerWhile back-to-school mode is about supplies and schedules, it is also about taking a moment to set a positive tone for the months ahead.
Making a point to start off the year with respect for parents, teachers, and administrators is also key to a successful school year. It is our duty to show them the respect and appreciation they deserve. By being attentive in class, completing assignments on time, and following school rules, we demonstrate that we are committed to our education and value the efforts of those who make up our school communities.
As students focus on academic and personal growth, they can also set meaningful goals, whether it be improving grades, joining a club or sports team, or volunteering in the community.
Here are a few quick tips that will help students to maintain a sense of purpose and reach their goals throughout the school year. I think these points can help benefit us all:
• Set goals.
• Establish good study habits early in the school year.
• Stay organized and focused.
• Take care of yourself physically and mentally.
• Get enough sleep.
• Eat a healthy diet.
• Commit to being a good friend.
I believe the last point—committing to being a good friend— is crucial. If we strive to be kind and caring to those around us—especially those struggling with personal or academic challenges—we can make a positive difference in the lives of others and foster a sense of community within our schools.
Make the most of the few weeks ahead to approach the new school year with positivity, determination, and kindness, and make it a school year to remember.
