Over 360 local newspapers have gone out of business since the pandemic began. According to Northwestern University’s journalism school, about two local news providers close their doors each week. Increases in the prices of paper and postage combined with a global recession in advertising spending have hit smaller publishers the most.

Our City has been impacted by these trends as well. We are, however, committed to continuing to bring the community the same local and school news we have had for years. We are restructuring and reinvigorating ourselves for a prosperous 2023.

We will publish our magazines in the Broward County cities we serve and continue to inform you about the latest goings-on in the community. Our focus, as always, will be on providing our readers with a valuable source of community news and offering advertisers an unparalleled way to reach local residents. Here is to a healthy, happy, and prosperous 2023!

Sincerely, Christy

Advanced Restoration Gives Homeowners Peace of Mind After Water or Mold Damage

Advanced Restoration is a locally owned and operated company that has been providing top-quality restoration services to the residents of our city for over 9 years. From water and fire damage to mold remediation and general construction, Advanced Restoration has the expertise and experience to handle any restoration project.

One of the things that sets Advanced Restoration apart from other companies is its commitment to customer service. They have recently invested in additional staff, training and equipment to grow the business and help the community. We sat down with Chief Strategy Officer, Bob Griffin, to learn more.

Tell us about Advanced Restoration. We restore homes that have been damaged by water and mold. We handle mitigating the loss as well as building back the home. We can also do upgrades that you may want above what your insurance company will pay. We are always a phone call away, 24 hours a day.

Mold remediation is a big concern in South Florida. How do you help concerned homeowners?

We specialize in mold remediation. The dangers of inhaling black mold make hiring Advanced to remove the mold and use green (safe) products to keep mold from coming back is critical.

Restoration projects can be quite stressful. How does Advanced Restoration help clients keep their peace of mind?

All of our employees are background checked, trained on safely restoring your home, and taking care to ensure homeowners are aware of the damage and restoration process. We work with our clients every step of the way throughout the process. Our quality is unmatched in the industry. We can also do upgrades that you may want above what your insurance company will pay.

Sawgrass Springs Middle School Is Off To A SMART Start!

Sawgrass Springs Middle School is excited to announce that construction has begun on its campus as its SMART Bond improvement projects are now underway. At the School Advisory Council meeting held in early December, attendees – which included students, parents, District and school-based staff – learned how the renovations at the school will make a drastic impact on the campus and on students’ learning experience.

The Deputy Program Manager for the Program Management company AECOM (Architecture, Engineering Construction Operations and Management), detailed the full scope of work that will take place at the school, including building envelope improvements – such as exterior painting, window replacements, etc. – the installation of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, as well as a new fire sprinkler and fire alarm system and ADA code compliance work.

In all, the district is investing approximately $13 million in improvements at Sawgrass Springs Middle. Principal Melinda Frame-Wessinger shared that she’s most looking forward to the new paint job, which will instantly enhance the school’s appearance. School Board Chair Lori Alhadeff, who represents District 4, was at the ceremony to celebrate the groundbreaking with school community. “I’m really excited to start our SMART bond project here at your school. Let’s get it moving, we’re going to be done by 2025,” Alhadeff said.

Sawgrass Springs Middle School is just one of fourteen schools in active construction in the City of Coral Springs. Across the District, nearly 200 projects are in various stages of construction – the largest number of projects undergoing active construction in the history of the voter-approved SMART Bond Program. To achieve this progress, AECOM developed and implemented several strategies and standards of procedures, including weekly coordination meetings and site visits with District staff.

AECOM was hired by Broward County Public Schools to manage the implementation of the SMART Bond Program, which has invested approximately $1.4 billion in improving the quality of the Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) educational experience through investments in the areas of Safety, Music and Art, Athletics, Renovation and Technology (SMART).

Follow along with the progress of Sawgrass Springs Middle and other projects across BCPS, by visiting the SMART Futures website at www.bcpssmartfutures.com. The SMART Futures website serves as an accessible, easy-to-use, comprehensive place for school communities and key stakeholders to find information about all SMART projects and the latest happenings in the Program.

BCPS Superintendent Makes Surprise Visits to Announce Teacher of the Year Finalists for BCPS 2023 Caliber Awards

Congratulations to the outstanding educators chosen as Teacher of the Year finalists for Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) 2023 Caliber Awards. On Friday, December 9, BCPS Superintendent Dr. Vickie L. Cartwright, School Board members, and school leaders visited teachers in their classrooms with the surprise announcements and gift baskets.

The five finalists vying for the top honor include: Dr. Danielle Bradley, a ninth-grade Cambridge AICE, honors and gifted English teacher at Coral Glades High School (21 years in education, all with BCPS).

“Dr. Bradley has a dynamic way of including students authentically in their own learning,” said Principal Dr. Mark Kaplan. “She methodically plans her lessons and demonstrates an uncanny ability to make those lessons come alive for her students.”

Otto Jesus Rodriquez, an 11th grade science teacher at South Broward High School (35 years in education, 20 years with BCPS).

“Mr. Rodriguez sets the bar extremely high for all those who work in education with his compassion, dedication and level of service to his students,” said Principal Patricia Brown. “It is difficult to

convey how awe-inspiring Mr. Rodriguez truly is. He has an outstanding impact on all his students and colleagues.”

Coral Springs To Mark Its 60th Anniversary Events & Celebrations

Growing from a master-planned “city in the country” to a thriving suburban hub, Coral Springs was first incorporated in 1963 as “the last piece of gold on the gold coast” and has since become home to more than 134,000 residents. Known for celebrating milestone years with a big bash or an attention-grabbing spectacle, city staff intend to keep with tradition by implementing larger-than-life plans for marking the 60th year

“The city with everything under the sun has always gone above-and-beyond for our residents by celebrating milestone years in grand fashion,” said Coral Springs Mayor Scott Brook. “The 60th Anniversary will keep that tradition with large-scale events, family-centered activities, and, of course, delicious food and fun!”

A team of Anniversary

Ambassadors will be on-hand throughout the year to enhance the celebration through community outreach. This group of volunteers, from teens to retirees, will serve at events, share the city’s past with visitors to the Museum of Coral Springs History, and encourage their neighbors to get involved in the festivities.

It was wonderful to be home for the holidays, to attend so many local events, and to meet and catch up with constituents and friends. Thank you to everyone who stopped by our office Open House. It was so nice to see you and have some time to talk and catch up. The New Year is often a time when we reflect on the past and make resolutions on how we can improve upon the future. Every January for the past few years, I've chosen a word to set the tone for the year ahead. This year I have chosen the word "Teamwork". No matter what we do in life and no matter where we go, we all have people we lean on and who lean on us for support, motivation, and to get things done. Sometimes our work and lives can be isolating. It is important to always realize there are people willing to help make this better. This year I will strive to do even more outreach to the many teams and groups in our community, to be more present in the moment, to not let the negative completely drown out the positive, to keep things in perspective, and to work toward solutions.

Perhaps we want to become more physically active, dedicate ourselves to more community service, commit to becoming a more supportive spouse/ partner, or enrich our work/life balance. We may even want to embrace a more patient outlook and approach to the daily routine of our lives. As mundane as they may sometimes seem, we must realize that our routines are something many others would love to have.

Making positive change is always important. But let’s pause for a moment and

Hreflect on the WHY. Are we making those changes for ourselves or are we feeling pressure to “Keep up with the Joneses?” These days, with social media and other outlets, our activities and our lives seem to be on display 24/7. I often find myself scrolling through Facebook when I have trouble sleeping, looking through my friends’ feeds to see what they are up to, which is both a blessing and a curse. Sometimes it’s hard for all of us to keep true to what’s important.

We often try to conform to please those around us or to feel like we fit in and that can cause us not to be ourselves from time to time. Catherine and I always do our best to ensure our children are independent and confident in themselves.

As you build goals for yourself and your families, make sure that you are doing it for the right reasons. It’s not easy. It takes work and we are not perfect. But that certainly doesn’t mean starting the New

Year with goals to improve yourself is not a great idea. I look forward to witnessing the positive changes and growth we are all ready to make.

Let’s lift one another up and support our loved ones and our neighbors to help each other achieve their goals in 2023.
