From live music every Friday night to seasonal special events, Weston Town Center provides plenty of entertainment options for the community to enjoy. The community center hosts events like The Home Expo, Craft & Talent Show, Classic Car Show, and Food & Wine Festival

The 2021 holiday season was magical at Weston Town Center. The community gathered in the spirit of the season, regardless of faith. Families filled the streets for the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, which included a visit from Santa Claus, as well as the annual Menorah Lighting. City leaders and VIP’s helped the Chabad of Weston light the giant menorah. Weston Town Center also played host to several community and cultural events such as Weston’s Hometown July 4th Parade, Celebrate the Arts Day, and the free outdoor pops concert.

Onstage, international artists brought instrumentals, dance and drum performances throughout the event. Attendees loved the return of Ronin Taiko, an acclaimed Japanese taiko drum ensemble which has wowed past audiences, as well as new acts such as the Paraguayan bottle dance.

Weston World Fest has once again been recognized as the Best Cultural Event in town. That’s not surprising when you consider it celebrates our community’s cultural diversity. The theme for this year was Animals of the Planet, highlighting native wildlife of the air, land and sea around the globe. All 20 international country booths as well as the Theme Village area featured the event theme.

New for 2023 was an expanded restaurant and dining section. Guests tasted both sweet and savory specialties from such countries as Lebanon, Greece, Italy, Spain, Singapore and Turkey along with beverages such as bubble tea and U.S. coffee concoctions.

OUTDOOR POPS CONCERT A Community Spring Favorite

On a lovely spring evening in April, the City of Weston and the Weston Music Society presented the South Florida Symphony Orchestra which headlined the annual Outdoor Pops Concert.

Over 500 were in attendance, the largest crowd ever which included many, many families with their kids. Everyone paid rapt attention to the wonderful music they were hearing. Many of these youngsters have been exposed to the Weston Music Society In-Schools Program, where they enjoy a concert by different sections of the orchestra. Diane Marett, Vice President of Events for the WMS, commented, “This is a wonderful concert for the elementary students to hear a full orchestra in concert, and for the middle and high school students to know there can be a career in music.”

From the opening number of the “World of Warcraft”, followed by soloist Amanda Lund performing “Let It Go” from “Frozen”, through to the finale ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno” from “Encanto”, it was an enchanted

evening. The singers involved some of the youngsters on stage in that final number. Along the way, soloists showed their skills in “New York, New York” and “My Way”, sung by Christopher Santiago, and “All I Ask of You” from Phantom of the Opera. The audience showed their enthusiastic appreciation. The orchestra was superb under the energetic and dramatic direction of guest conductor Huifang Chen.

Gina Catone, Weston Music Society President, noted, “This concert has become a community favorite and a staple spring offering. We are delighted with this year’s attendance and we hope to bring more orchestral music to the community.”

Annalisa Walker, Special Events Manager for the City of Weston, said, “This concert is a great addition to the variety of programs the City brings to the community. We enjoy working with the Weston Music Society on events like this one.”

LOCAL Author Ken Kaye Spins Tabloid-Worthy Mysteries

As a young man in Cleveland, Ohio, Ken wanted nothing more than to become an airline pilot. He was working toward that goal, building hours as a flight instructor, when a spark of inspiration took him in a new direction. His first book idea helped him determine he was better suited for a creative life and pursued a career in journalism. He started writing for Sun Newspapers in Cleveland before moving to South Florida in 1978 to write for Sun Sentinel.

They’re just a few of the scenarios found in local independent author, Ken Kaye’s, mysterysuspense novels. A retired Sun Sentinel reporter living in Weston, Ken has published ten books featuring Broward County tabloid

Ken’s flying experience led him to numerous articles and columns featuring aviation. He was the lead Sun Sentinel reporter on the ValuJet Airlines DC-9 crash in the Everglades in 1996 that killed 110 people, earning multiple awards for his reporting on the story. He also covered weather and hurricanes for 18 years and was the team-lead during the 2004-2005 hurricane seasons. Both years, Sun Sentinel was a Pulitzer Prize finalist. Ken retired in 2015 after 41 years in journalism, 37 at Sun Sentinel.

Ken’s passion for aviation and his fascination with the Everglades often find their way into his stories. He casts his main characters as tabloid reporters because they are usually paid to fabricate stories. In his books, they stumble upon fantastical

Ken purchased his home in Weston in 1990. He and his wife, Maria, who is from the Dominican Republic, love living here because it feels like Disney. After decades of writing on deadline, Ken enjoys the freedom to write at his own pace. He spends about four hours a day writing and revising, and publishes his books independently through Middle River Press, owned and operated by Oakland Park residents Judy and Bruce Borich. He’s working on two books now and has ideas for many more. When asked what motivates him, Ken says, “I’m just an old guy who likes to write books.”

Heel Pain in Children

Does your son or daughter complain of heel pain daily, especially during or after activity? Do they remember any traumatic event or did the pain just occur? If this sounds like your child, there is a high probability that they have Calcaneal Apophysitis (or Sever’s Disease). This is actually a condition and not a disease. This occurs when the growth plate (apophysis) located at the bottom and back of the heel (the portion of the bone that allows growth) becomes painfully inflamed. Although plantar fasciitis (inflammation of the ligament that supports the arch) is the most common cause of heel pain in adults, it is extremely uncommon in children.

CAUSE

▸ Growth plate inflammation on the back and the bottom of the heel

▸ Over-activity in children commonly between the ages of 8 and 14

▸ Tight muscles in the lower extremity, especially the calf muscle

▸ Flatfeet

▸ Poor shoe gear or walking barefoot

▸ Growth spurts

SYMPTOMS

▸ Discomfort in the heel bone at the end of activity

▸ Occasionally painful to the Achilles and ankle

▸ Stiffness in the foot in the morning and pain with walking or running

▸ Pain alleviated by rest and a decrease in activity

SEVER'S DISEASE

▸ Pain is usually present during or after a child is done with the activity, sits for a period of time, and then tries to get up and walk

SIGNS

Tenderness to the back and bottom of the heel with touch or grasping the heel

▸ Walking on the ball of the foot to avoid touching the heel to the ground

▸ Discoloration and swelling are almost never seen in the heel

▸ Limping at the end of an activity that may persist as the condition worsens

TREATMENT

▸ Modification of activity and avoiding going barefoot

▸ Rest and ice

▸ Stretching exercises

▸ Proper shoe gear and heel lifts to decrease tension on the heel

▸ Night splinting to stretch the tight calf muscle and arch ligament

▸ Taping the foot to decrease the pulling of the plantar fascia on the heel bone

▸ Custom molded orthotics to support the foot and help restore proper alignment

▸ Occasional immobilization in a boot or cast to completely rest the heel and allow healing

▸ Physical therapy to improve flexibility and diminish inflammation of the growth plate

MACULAR DEGENERATION

Macular degeneration is a common eye condition that affects many people in our community, particularly those over the age of 50. It is a progressive disease that can cause a loss of central vision, which can have a significant impact on daily activities like reading, driving, and recognizing faces.

There are two types of macular degeneration: dry and wet. Dry macular degeneration is more common and progresses slowly, while wet macular degeneration is less common but can cause rapid vision loss. While there is no known cure for macular degeneration, there are treatments available that can slow down its progression and prevent further vision loss.

One of the most effective ways to prevent macular degeneration is by adopting a healthy lifestyle. This includes eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and fish, as well as exercising regularly and avoiding smoking. These lifestyle changes can help reduce the risk of developing the disease and can also help slow its progression in those who have already been diagnosed.

Another important step in preventing and managing macular degeneration is regular eye exams. Eye exams can detect the early signs of macular degeneration before vision loss occurs, allowing for early intervention and treatment. It is recommended that individuals over the age of 50 have a comprehensive eye exam every year, or more frequently if there are any concerning symptoms.

For those who have been diagnosed with macular degeneration, there are several treatment options available. These include injections of medication directly into the eye to slow the growth of abnormal blood vessels in wet macular degeneration, as well as laser therapy to seal off leaking blood vessels. There are also vitamin and mineral supplements that can help slow the progression of dry macular degeneration.

Living with macular degeneration can be challenging, but there are many resources available to help individuals manage the disease and maintain their quality of life.

FLEA & TICK PREVENTION

What Are Fleas and Ticks?

Fleas and ticks are external parasites that can cause extreme discomfort for your pet and can also cause serious diseases.

Fleas

Fleas are insects that are ubiquitous in the environment—meaning they can be found almost everywhere. There are more than 2000 species of fleas, but the common cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) is the one that most commonly afflicts dogs and cats.

A disease of concern that can be caused by fleas is flea allergy dermatitis (FAD), which is a severe allergic reaction to flea bites. Some pets are so allergic that even a single bite can cause a reaction. FAD makes pets miserable. In severe cases, it can cause severe itching and inflammation that, if left untreated, can lead to excessive scratching and chewing that can damage the skin. Secondary bacterial or fungal infections can develop as a result.

Finally, in very severe infestations, particularly in old, ill, or young animals, fleas can remove so much blood through feeding that they can weaken the animal.

Ticks

Ticks are not insects, but they are closely related to spiders, scorpions, and mites. There are approximately 80 tick species found in the United States, but only a handful of them are of real concern to pets and people. Some of these include the brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus), the deer tick (Ixodes scapularis), and the American dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis). The brown dog tick is the only species that can complete its entire lifecycle on a dog and can infest homes and kennels.

Tick bites can be painful and irritating, but the real concern with ticks is the number of serious diseases they can transmit, such as Lyme disease, babesiosis, anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. These diseases can cause significant illness and even death in both pets and people.

How Do I Know If My Pet Has Fleas and/or Ticks?

Larger tick species can typically be seen or felt in the hair coat, especially once they are engorged after feeding. Deer ticks, on the other hand, are very tiny—about the size of the head of a pin in some stages—and can be harder to see.

Repetitive scratching is a telltale sign that your pet may have fleas. Adult fleas can be identified on the pet, but fleas in other stages of their life cycle (eggs, larvae, and pupae) can be harder to find. Adult fleas are tiny and can be hard to see, but flea combs can be used to remove fleas as well as flea dirt. Flea dirt is essentially flea feces, which is digested blood. To check your pet for fleas, run a flea comb through your pet’s fur and dump any hair and debris onto a

white paper towel. Dampen it slightly with water. Any small, dark specks that stain the towel red are a clear indication your pet has fleas. Finally, excessive grooming is also a sign of a potential flea problem. Infested cats will groom themselves repeatedly in an effort to remove fleas.

Never use flea control products intended for dogs on cats. Some medications can be highly toxic to cats. Only use products on the species for which they are intended, and follow all label instructions.

ow many of us have found ourselves all alone with our infant or toddler narrating our every move or talking through our own daily struggles. Research shows “that talking, singing, and pointing with your baby or young child are actually some of the most important things you can do to build a strong and healthy brain!” Communication is such an important skill for all ages but can have a greater value for children when taught at a young age.

In the world we live in today, it is easy as a parent to get distracted or have too much to do to take the time to really engage with our children, so it’s time to put down the cell phones and video games and get back to wholehearted family conversations.

HTalking to your child doesn’t have to be a daunting task, opportunities to do so are endless. Bath time is a great time to talk to your child. While eating dinner as a family, model good language and conversation skills with other family members and engage them with open ended questions. If you have older toddlers, making dinner is one of my favorite times to engage them in learning. They are not only hearing new vocabulary words, but they are also learning sequencing words, and performing tasks that match their language.

Teeing Off For A Good Cause: FHV Rotary Club of Weston Golf Classic Raised Close to $200,000 in Funds For Local Scholarships

he Tournament, held April 3rd brought together golf enthusiasts, sponsors, and volunteers to create an unforgettable experience while making a positive impact on our community. After meeting financial need, academic and community service requirements, on May 18th students from Western High, Cypress Bay High, Sagemont, H.A.N.D.Y. and Children’s Harbor will be awarded scholarships from $1,000 up to full four-year tuitions, often making the difference on whether these students are able to attend college or not.

The Rotary Club of Weston’s Annual Charity Golf Tournament is a highly anticipated event that has been held for the past 36 years in the beautiful Club at Weston Hills. The tournament’s success can be attributed to careful planning, dedicated volunteers, and generous sponsors who believe in the cause.

The planning for the tournament starts several months in advance, with a committed team of volunteers working tirelessly to ensure every detail is carefully coordinated. May is national bicycle month

As the weather continues to warm up in South Florida, the number of people hitting the roads on their bicycles is increasing. Not only is bike riding good exercise and good for the environment, but it is an activity families can do together. However, with the increase in the number of cyclists, there has also been a rise in the number of injuries and fatalities. To enjoy the ride and minimize the risk of injuries, it is important that bike riders of all ages follow important safety tips

According to statistics from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, there were 6,513 bicycle accidents in Florida in 2022 alone, resulting in 150 fatalities. Bicycling injuries for children ages 0-19 resulted in 2 fatal injuries per week, 150 hospitalizations per week, and 2,630 visits to the emergency room.

Data shows that as children age, the rate of fatal bicycle injury increases. A properly fitted bike helmet can reduce the risk of head injuries by at least 45 percent, however, more than 50% of children under age 14 consistently wear a bike helmet. Fortunately, there are many things’ parents and caregivers can do to model safe behaviors and keep their children safe while riding.

We want to encourage everyone to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather while being safe on their bicycles and following these top safety tips can help keep you and your family safe while riding:

• Always wear a properly fitted helmet to protect your head in case of an accident.

• Use hand signals to indicate when you are turning or stopping.

• Ride in the same direction as traffic and stay in designated bike lanes, sidewalks, or paths whenever possible.

• Wear bright or reflective clothing to make yourself more visible to motorists.

• Avoid distractions such as using your phone while riding.

• Children should not ride alone.

The City of Weston has also implemented several initiatives to improve bicycle safety in the area. One of these initiatives includes the creation of more designated bike lanes and paths throughout the city and surrounding areas.
