Weston Regional Park

hether you are looking for action packed sports or quiet relaxation, Weston Regional Park has something for everyone. The 102 acre park is home to the Weston Community Center and the Sheinberg Family YMCA. It also hosts Moonlight Movies in the Park and the annual Rock & Pop Masters Concert. Weston Regional Park houses a variety of sports venues including baseball/softball fields, football/soccer fields, basketball courts, roller hockey rinks, and sand volleyball courts. There is also a Skate Park for inline skaters and skateboarders. A 1.5 mile exercise trail weaves throughout the entire park. In addition, Weston Regional Park offers two shaded playgrounds, including the city’s first “universally accessible” playground. While all playground equipment in city parks meets the standards for accessibility for individuals with disabilities, the Regional Park playground has components that allow participants in wheelchairs to utilize ramps to access higher elements within the play equipment. Designed in two sections for children ages two to five and five to twelve, the new equipment provides for hours of exercise and entertainment. Weston Regional Park also offers Wi-Fi, providing all park visitors with access to free internet connectivity.

Over the last year Sven has taken over publishing responsibilities for the well known ‘Our City Weston’ magazine and ‘Davie Town Times’ magazine. Under his leadership his team has successfully launched the new ‘Pines Miramar Town Times’ magazine, which now provides the same free local news to the residents of Pembroke Pines and Miramar. As of April 2011 the team expanded their group of magazines with their inaugural ‘Plantation Town Times’. Now our local community news magazines can be enjoyed every month by 80,000 households!!

Halloween Safety Expo

The Harvest Drive

hosts and goblins, pumpkins and police cars. The annual Halloween Safety Expo has become a Weston tradition. Families look forward to this free festival each year because they know it is a safe place to enjoy Halloween. Children are encouraged to come dressed in costume for trick-or-treating. A DJ plays Halloween-themed songs to get everyone into the holiday spirit. The pumpkin patch is a great place for a family photo-opp. Kids can even decorate a pumpkin at the arts and crafts table. The Broward Sheriff’s Office always brings its impressive fleet with fire and rescue trucks and other emergency vehicles, along with the crowd-pleasing K9 unit and mounted patrols. Another popular attraction is the Teddy Bear Clinic. Volunteers from Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital guide children through various stations as they learn to treat teddy bears and other stuffed animals. Weston’s annual Halloween Safety Expo is always a great way to get a head start on your Halloween festivities. It is sponsored by the City of Weston and the Broward Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.

he Weston ArtWalk and ShowTime Outdoor Festival is a celebration of the superb artistic talent within our community. The annual event, which takes place at Weston Town Center, showcases our local visual and performing artists. This year’s juried event featured work by more than 70 artists exhibiting a wide variety of mediums including painting, sculpture, photography, creative crafts, jewelry and much more. The ShowTime portion of the event highlighted the talents of our local entertainers. It featured a variety of musical, dance and vocal performances by professionals and non-professionals, including students enrolled in Weston dance and music studios. Speaking of students, the winners of the Student Artist Showcase were featured at the Arts Council of Greater Weston’s tent. Here, visitors could admire artwork created by talented students of all ages. The Weston ArtWalk and ShowTime just celebrated its fifth season. The event gets bigger and better each year. It is presented by the Arts Council of Greater Weston and sponsored by the City of Weston.

rom its humble beginnings here in Weston at Country Isles Elementary in 1992, the Harvest Drive has grown into one of Broward County’s biggest food drives. But what makes this program so special is that children are at the helm of this collection. Children helping children is the heart and soul of the Harvest Drive. Well over 1,800 students from kindergarten through college helped make last year’s Harvest Drive the biggest ever – it served 1,582 families in need. From the Harvest Drive headquarters at Western High School (it outgrew Country Isles years ago), hundreds of Weston students helped collect, sort and distribute tens of thousands of grocery items and other essentials. Each recipient family received no less than ten overflowing grocery bags. Families also received gently used clothing, toys and books.

he City of Weston is replacing over 1,000 city-owned street lights with LED lights on public roadways. Not only will this conserve energy, it will also save substantial money. The City estimates the new energy efficient LED lights will save between $120,000 and $160,000 a year on electricity costs. That is a savings of 50 to 70 percent. Over half the cost of this $1.06 million project is funded by a federal Energy Efficiency Conservation Block Grant. This is not the first time the City has replaced older light fixtures. All of the public buildings have already been retrofitted with energy efficient fixtures. By replacing older technology fluorescent lighting in the Weston Community Center, police and fire stations, public works building, and other city-owned buildings, Weston has realized a 25% reduction in lighting energy consumption and reduced greenhouse gases. The City Hall was built using energy efficient products.
