There is one day each year when everyone is Irish and downtown Hollywood is transformed into a sea of green. A huge crowd fills the downtown area as floats roll by and bands begin to play.

Floats begin to roll down Hollywood Boulevard with live music and dancing all afternoon and late into the night. Area businesses open their doors to local families as well as tourists from as far as Ireland itself. The family-friendly nature of the Hollywood festival makes it especially inviting. We can’t wait for COVID-19 to go away, so we can celebrate in style again!

In the evening, on the third Saturday of every month, downtown Hollywood is transformed into an art lover’s paradise. Our readers love the laid-back, unassuming vibe as they peruse galleries and shops. There is certainly no pressure to purchase anything, but there are tons of great finds every time!

The highlight of the event is always the Artisan Market on Harrison Street between 20th and 21st Ave. Pop-up shops, live music, and artist showcases are on display. There are frequently guided tours of Hollywood’s famous murals and galleries. The Art Walk is great to visit anytime, but we love it in the winter on a cool evening. Patients diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer have few treatment options. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation or IRE for short has changed that for many patients who are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies. Dr. Robert Donoway, who has one of the largest International experiences for performing this procedure on the pancreas and liver is a Hollywood based, Sloan Kettering trained Pancreatic Surgical Oncologist, and former medical director of two of the local cancer programs remains among a very small handful of Pancreatic surgeons who perform the procedure which is done in the operating room as an outpatient.

During the procedure, Dr. Donoway places fine needle probes under direct ultrasound guidance into and around the pancreatic tumor while carefully avoiding critical structures. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is then delivered in 90-microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems.

The pulses destroy the cancer cell membranes which then causes the tumor to die and be absorbed by the body. The average procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and the patients may be discharged the following day. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner.

Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. The longest survivors are now out over 5 years and without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.”

Children’s “Halloween Drive Through” at TY Park The Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts, in partnership with Broward County Parks and Recreation, will be hosting a Halloween Candy Kick-Off Drive Through Event at T.Y. Park, 3300 North Park Road in Hollywood on Saturday, October 31st from 4 to 6 p.m. Children ages 3 to 12 are welcome to participate, candy supplies are limited.

This is a drive through only event. All attendees must remain in their vehicles at all times and facial coverings are required, no exceptions. For more information on the drive through event, please call 954.921.3404.

High seasonal tides can cause low-lying coastal areas to flood Based on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s tide predictions, above average high tides are expected. High seasonal tides, also known as King Tides, can cause low-lying coastal areas to flood. Motorists are urged to use caution and seek an alternative route to avoid traveling on flooded streets. Seasonal tides can raise the water level by more than 2 and a half feet during high tide which can cause coastal roads, parking lots and docks in vulnerable areas to flood during the times of high tide.

The City is working on both short and long-term solutions to help minimize the impacts of tidal flooding. NOA A predicts above average high tides again November 13th through 18th.

Early Voting Expected to Shatter 2016 Records

All indications suggest a record turn-out for this year’s general election. Voters supporting President Donald Trump and Democratic nominee and former Vice President Joe Biden stood in line wearing raincoats and holding umbrellas. The early voting comes on top of a record number of vote-by-mail requests.

More than 2.5 million mail-in ballots were requested in Florida prior to early voting polls even opening.

In the 2016 presidential election, 9.5 million Floridians cast their vote, including 816,000 Broward County residents. Experts expect those numbers to be significantly eclipsed in this year’s race.

According to the Broward Supervisor of Elections, more than 300,000 Broward votes were cast by the end of the first day of early voting.

The increase in vote-by-mail activity is expected to offset delays caused by COVID-19 safety precautions. The vast majority of voters respected requests to wear masks and to anticipate delays while voting

expected on election night, November 3rd.

There are 1,267,187 voters eligible to vote in Broward County this year.
