ach year, on February 14th, millions of people around the world demonstrate their love for someone special by giving Valentine’s Day gifts. While chocolate, flowers or jewelry remain the most popular presents, there are many more interesting options available. People who appreciate sentiment more than financial value may give a hand-written coupon book to their love, complete with “free massage” or “I do the dishes” coupons, to be redeemed by their mate at a future date. Others may give a gift in support of their partner’s passion -- a new 3-wood for a golfer or a set of paint brushes for an artist. Other options include heart-shaped pizzas or twohanded mittens, meant for lovers to keep warm while holding hands (probably not the most practical present here in South Florida). Personally, we prefer the simple Sweetheart candies with “be mine” stamped on the side. No matter what you give, if you give from your heart, your Valentine is sure to be happy. Get in Gear - It’s Time for the 8th Annual Tour de Broward COMMUNITY NEWS

any know about the annual internationally acclaimed bicycle race, Le Tour de France, which has occurred each July for over the past century. South Florida may not have that many years or miles under its belt, but the “8th Annual ANF Group Tour de Broward” will take place at Miramar Regional Park on February 26th. Last year more than 6,000 participated in the 2016 Tour

de Broward, including Naida Revelo. Revelo sported a t-shirt saying, “Joe D’s Saved My Grandson’s Life”. It was clear what motivated this grandmother to run her first 5K. This year, thousands are expected to come out again and exercise in an effort to help children and families at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, the region’s largest pediatric facility serving Broward, Palm Beach, and northern Miami-Dade counties. Tour de Broward offers something for every age, physical ability and level of fitness. This 50 and 100K bicycle ride, 5K timed run and 3K walk is a community fundraiser sponsored once again by the ANF Group. There will also be the sports-themed “Power of Play Kid Zone” which will provide healthy, fun activities for children ages 13 and younger. Registration fees range from $10-$40 depending upon the event one signs up for and the sign-up date. “This is an opportunity for the South Florida community to assist our efforts to provide safe, high quality, cost-effective, patient and family-centered care,” said Memorial Healthcare System President & CEO Aurelio M. Fernandez, III, FACHE. “We want everyone in our community to get involved.” Last year the event raised $501,000 which positively impacted the thousands of children who required outpatient visits, surgery and other medical services at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. This year’s funds will be designated to continue the expansion of the pediatric programs and services. So far, in its seven-year history, the Tour de Broward has raised more than $2.5 million to aid the growth of the Hollywood-based hospital that

his well-known couple have won 26 Grammy Awards, sold hundreds of millions of records, and paved the way for some of the most successful Latin musical artists of all time. They are also the first couple ever honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and now Emilio and Gloria Estefan can add the 2017 Joe DiMaggio American Icon Award to their illustrious resume. The Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital “American Icon Award” is given to those that represent the highest values for Joe DiMaggio stood. The couple joined NBA legends Pat Riley, President of the Miami Heat and Earvin “Magic” Johnson, and former U.S. President Bill Clinton as honorees that uphold and have the societal impact of the award’s namesake. Married since 1978, the Estefans have had great success as entrepreneurs and philanthropists. The benevolent humanitarians were recognized by the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation at a gala banquet honoring them last month at the Diplomat Resort & Spa in Hollywood where they received the prestigious award. The annual event benefits thousands of children and families with life-saving care provided every day at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. In the mid-1980s Emilio and Gloria rose to international superstardom with the Miami Sound Machine. Emilio managed his wife’s career as she topped charts as both an English and Spanish- language recording

artist. The success made her the most successful crossover performer in Latin music history. The dynamic duo also influenced a generation of Hispanic superstars that followed including Shakira, Jon Secada, Mark Anthony, and Ricky Martin. “Emilio and Gloria are global treasures that South Florida is fortunate to be able to call our own,” said Aurelio M. Fernandez, III, FACHE, President & CEO of the Memorial Healthcare System. “Their body of work, in and out of the music business, has positively impacted more people than can be counted.” Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital is the largest regional children’s hospital, serving all of Broward, Palm Beach and northern Miami-Dade Counties. With 224 licensed beds, six operating rooms, and an entire floor dedicated to pediatric oncology, JDCH combines advanced technology, the expertise of some of South Florida’s most diverse board-certified pediatric specialists, and a patient and family-centered focus. Proceeds from the event benefitted the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and the nonprofit Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation which provides philanthropic funding to the children’s hospital. Hollywood Residents Shine as ArtServe Volunteers COMMUNITY NEWS

A
s 2016 came to a close, many organizations not only had holiday parties and special events, but some celebrated and thanked their volunteers. ArtServe was one that held its annual volunteer appreciation reception to thank the nearly 90 volunteers who donated their time last season to Broward County’s premier arts service organization. The generous host of the evening was the Atlantic Hotel & Spa. They presented an elegant cocktail reception for the volunteers. In addition, many door prizes were provided by reception sponsors that included Elements Massage, Cinema Paradiso, ArtBlend Magazine, Slow Burn Theatre Company and the Winterfest Boat Parade. Two of these outstanding volunteers are Hollywood residents, Xiamara Owens and Donna Pacheco. Pacheco has volunteered at ArtServe for the past two years. The role she plays at ArtServe is crucial since she is directly involved with the artists. She collects and prepares their works to the gallery for themed exhibitions. “I retired very young and I wanted to revisit my creative side,” Pacheco said. “I used to pass ArtServe going down the road and I looked up their website. I

dropped in and visited with Rebecca Wilkner, the volunteer coordinator, who was very warm and inviting.” Fluent in English, French, Portuguese and Spanish, Pacheco says she has had the opportunity to use her language skills at ArtServe. “I love meeting people and I love the international community. I like people with a creative side who have an artistic edge, and who color outside the lines.” Pacheco has also volunteered with other organizations such as the Wounded Warriors. “The challenge when you retire is how to move on to a new phase of your life. By volunteering you will meet new people and foster new relationships. It’s all positive,” adds Pacheco. ArtServe volunteers greet gallery and exhibition visitors, assist at receptions and with gift shop sales, help administrative staff answer phones, do mailings and minor clerical work and coordinate service hours for volunteer students. Student volunteers are eligible to earn community service hours toward their graduation requirement. The award-winning arts incubator is one of the original six created in the United States. The 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization offers individuals and businesses a wide range of services, events, affordable facilities and collaborative opportunities that enrich the community, strengthen the economy, foster entrepreneurship and help artists have successful, sustainable careers.

The Art and Culture Center/Hollywood Invites Everyone to the Eighth All-Media Juried Biennial BY BEVERLY PERKINS

ust last month The Art and Culture Center/Hollywood opened the Eighth All-Media Juried Biennial which will be exhibited at the Center until March 5, 2017. The exhibition features 77 selected projects by 63 artists throughout Florida. Artists residing in the state of Florida were invited to submit entries of contemporary artwork for consideration in this Biennial. Paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture, photography, video, computer-generated images, performance, and site-specific installations were considered. Juror Katherine Pill, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, collaborated with Laura Marsh, the Center’s curator and reviewed 1,084 entries submitted by 391 artists from 85 different cities in the state. Katherine Pill has organized the permanent collection exhibitions Color Acting: Abstraction Since 1950 and Marks Made: Prints by American Women Artists from the 1960s to the Present, and Shana Moulton: Journeys Out of the Body, the artist’s first solo museum exhibition in the United States. Pill previously held the position Andrew Nigon, of Assistant Curator at the Kemper The Mark of Cain 2015, Urethane Plastic, Museum of Contemporary Art in Steel, Wood, Acrylic Paint, 14” x 10” x 12.” Kansas City, Missouri. She earned

a BA in Art History from McGill University in Montreal and a dual MA in Art History and Arts Administration from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. This year’s solo artist is Andrew Nigon. His exhibition, Adam and Eve, will be in the Project Room. His work explores the divine spaces that exist when trauma and grace are architecturally united. Awards totaling $6,500 will be granted to four exhibitors selected by Pill. The Art and Culture Center/Hollywood recognizes the practices of living artists and further supports artists in the studio. Announcement of the winners will take place during the opening reception. Distribution of the cash prize is as follows: ▸▸ $3,000 Best in Show ▸▸ $2,000 First Place ▸▸ $1,000 Second Place ▸▸ $500 Third Place Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday, 10 am to 5 pm and Saturday-Sunday, noon to 4 pm. Free parking is available at the Center, which is located at 1650 Harrison St. General admission to the Center’s galleries are $7 for adults; $4 for students, seniors, and children ages 4 to 17; and free to Center members as well as children under the age of 4. The Center will also offer free admission day on February 19th.

Sheridan Technical College Named One of the State’s Top 10 Culinary Arts Schools SCHOOL NEWS

any locals are surprised to hear what’s cooking in their backyard. Talented individuals are learning and earning a degree at one of Florida’s top 10 culinary arts schools right here in Hollywood. Sheridan Technical College Culinary Arts School recently earned the number seven spot amongst other state institutions by Best Choice Schools. Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) happens to be home to two of the top 10 best culinary schools in Florida, the other being McFatter Technical College (#9). Both schools, Sheridan Technical and McFatter, earned the recognition based on their reputation for excellence in the industry, high-quality program offerings, and real-world hands-on experiences. Both technical colleges are accredited by the American Culinary Federation (ACF) and have received exemplary status. “It is an incredible achievement to be ranked among the top 10 state culinary programs,” said Sheridan Technical College Director D. Robert Boegli. “This recognition validates that our technical colleges are offering the best in culinary education, and underscores that our graduates are trained and prepared to become leaders in the culinary industry.” The Commercial Foods and Culinary Arts program offered at Sheridan
Technical College is a 1200 hour course that can be completed in less than one year of full-time study and articulates to a culinary arts management degree at Broward College. The extensive certification program offers training in bakery and dessert preparation, entrepreneurship, communication skills and cost control with classes such as Garde Manger (Cold Foods), Hot Foods, Culinary Baking, Sanitation & Safety, Nutrition, Supervision & Management, and Controlling Foodservice Costs. “We are very proud of this Top 10 recognition by Best Choice Schools. Engineering Showcase at Colbert Museum Magnet Makes the Grade BY BEVERLY PERKINS
M
ore than 150 parents and community members attended Colbert Museum Magnet School’s quarterly engineering exhibition. Students were proud to exhibit their hands-on, product based knowledge of the engineering design process in the crowd-filled cafetorium. The exhibition served as a culminating showcase for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Throughout the quarter, all students are engaged in inquirybased STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) curriculum that teaches students thinking and reasoning skills needed for success. Built around the engineering design process, students are tasked with solving a real-world problem and developing a solution to a design challenge. Students collaborate, think critically and creatively, and communicate with one another as the work on their designs. The ambitious students were able to act as docents as they elaborated on their engineered solutions to the admiring visitors. In addition, they also engaged the crowd in interactive activities which allowed the inquisitive guests to also become engineers. During the exhibition showcase, first grade docents shared how they became chemical engineers in order to improve the play dough process. They gave a brief

synopsis of a story about a girl who designs a better way to make play dough. Docents further explained how they explored the properties of different materials and the properties of a mixture of materials. Visitors were then invited to design their own process for making high quality play-dough and were able to make and take their own play-dough. Some of the other engineered solutions on display included building bridges, taking on the role of a packaging engineer, and designing and building alarm circuits. “Engineering teaches students the critical thinking skills they need to be successful learners. During our engineering exhibitions, students confidently take visitors through the engineering design process (EDP) as they explain how they create, fail, and rethink their designs,” said STEM Magnet Coordinator Chentel Neat. “Through the EDP they learn that failure is good and persistence is important in order for their designs to be successful. Students revel in the fact that it’s not just a project but the real world, and that they get to transform into a real engineer. These exhibitions hold great value, as students and visitors alike learn that anyone can engineer.” As an added bonus, the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) was on hand to share their knowledge as well as their conservation efforts with the students and community members, as well as provide them with the opportunity to touch and feel some ocean critters. Neat further added, “As our year continues, the students will take on many more roles and responsibilities such as aerospace engineers, structural and civic engineers, and entomologists. To be a part of our next Engineering Showcase, stop by Colbert on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at 5:30 PM to get hands-on and engaged in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math.”

Avant Garde Academy Students Showed Their Holiday Spirit to Those in Blue SCHOOL NEWS

During the holidays, the second grade classes from the Avant Garde Academy in Hollywood wanted to do something special for the Hollywood Police Department. This thoughtful bunch of boys and girls created and decorated holiday cards as a way to thank those who serve and protect the community each and every day of the year. However, it was Lara Leader, parent of an Avante Garde second grader, who was responsible for organizing this good deed along with the second grade Academy teachers and Lieutenant Selina Hightower and Sergeant Jason Bloch of the Hollywood Police Department. “I try to teach my children to give back, especially during this special time of year when many of the officers will have to work while we are celebrating the holidays,” said Leader. “It’s nice being part of a community that is supportive and appreciative of the police department.” Leader also approached local businesses to donate treats. Every business asked did not even hesitate. They all responded by saying, “Whatever you need, we will be happy to contribute.” The local businesses who participated in the event were: ▸▸ Hoffman’s Chocolates ▸▸ Mimi’s Ravioli ▸▸ Gino’s Italian Deli ▸▸ Joan’s Florist
Approximately 25 students and their families came out to the Hollywood Police Department to share their special gifts with the officers. The students also participated in the Police Toy Drive by bringing unwrapped toys for those less fortunate. Newly sworn in Mayor Josh Levy attended with his family, and also thanked the department for their dedication to the community and the students for their gesture. “As mayor, it warms my heart to see that we have such thoughtful parents and school children in Hollywood, stated Mayor Levy. “These second graders are to be applauded. They came to police headquarters to say ‘thank you’ to our officers and it means a lot.” The basic principle of Avante Garde Academy is to give their students “an opportunity to develop moral and democratic values on an intellectual level during daily activities”. Furthermore, they require that “each student make a determined effort to take every opportunity toward their own fulfillment and as a member of the community via the established structures and support systems provided by the School”. No doubt, they made their school proud as they performed an act of gratitude and kindness in the community. They showed that their spirit and presence truly is a gift.
South Broward Graduate Helps New Zealand Recovery Efforts BY BEVERLY PERKINS
H
ollywood native Paige Krwczynski is a crewmember for the U.S. Navy. The 2014 South Broward High School graduate carries the title of Seaman and is a Gunner’s Mate aboard the USS Sampson (DDG 102). The guided-missile destroyer assisted in earthquake recovery efforts in Kaikoura, a town on New Zealand’s South Island. As a Gunner’s Mate, Krawczynski is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the weapons systems, gun mounts and other ordnance equipment, as well as small arms and magazines aboard USS Sampson. She’s also responsible for electrical and electronic circuitry, mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems. “What I like about my job is the huge responsibil-

ity of making sure the ship is in readiness condition, keeping our launchers up and running, and ready for anything that gets thrown at us,” said Krawczynski. “We use not only muscle, but brains as a gunner’s mate. At the end of the day I know I’m making a difference by keeping all the weapon systems up to the Sampson’s Standards” Fortunately, Krawczynski and her crew were scheduled to participate in New Zealand’s International Naval Review, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Royal New Zealand Navy. Therefore, they were able to render assistance to those affected by the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that shook the South Island last November. Sailors flew ashore in MH-60R helicopters

to distribute water, aid in infrastructural repair, assess damage, and pass out informational packets that informed residents what services were available. The USS Sampson is capable of helicopter operations and warfare areas such as anti-submarine, surface, air, and strike in support of ensuring stability and prosperity throughout the Pacific. “While viewing sobering images of widespread infrastructural damage in Kaikoura, I was also reminded and encouraged by the sight of my Sailors going ashore with an unwavering can-do spirit that assures me we are doing our part in supporting the New Zealand forces,” said Cmdr. Tim LaBenz, commanding officer of Sampson. As one of approximately 350 crew members, Krawczynski explained they are building a legacy that will last beyond their lifetimes. As with the American Navy, New Zealand is an important leader in the Pacific, a key contributor to global security, and a valuable military partner on issues like humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and peacekeeping. “What I like most about being on Sampson is we are all family. You pass anyone in the passageway, it’s a big smile and hello, especially when you’re a gunner’s mate,” said Krawczynski. “I couldn’t imagine being on any other ship that makes me feel like I’m right at home. Hard work and determination is definitely Sampson’s number one goal.”

ipoabdominoplasty is an advanced technique bringing significant change to the traditional tummy tuck. The procedure involves a combination of traditional liposuction with an open skin and fat removal procedure, typically referred to as a tummy tuck. The combination of the two procedures enables the plastic surgeon to better contour and shape the abdomen and the adjacent areas more completely. Patients who have experienced increased skin laxity and excess fat deposition in the abdomen, hips, and waist can now transform their bodies into a more beautiful shape. This procedure is ideal for patients who have excess skin and fat with abdominal weakness, commonly seen after childbirth, weight loss, and with the alterations that are seen with the aging process. Lipoabdominoplasty safely Before After combines suction-assisted lipectomy (liposuction) with abdominal muscle tightening and skin removal. The fat which is removed via lipoaspiration can be added to other areas of contour deficiency like the buttocks through fat grafting or transfer. This combination reshapes the entire midsection and buttock giving the individual the Abdominoplasty shapely body contour they desire. The technique should be used with caution in patients who have a history of smoking or previous abdominal surgery and should be performed only by experienced surgeons who are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. There are a number of important variables that determine whether a patient is a candidate for a lipoabdominoplasty. For any plastic surgical procedure to be a complete success, medical and psychological fitness for surgery is a prerequisite. The appropriate patient typically is close to their ideal body weight with anatomic features that may be improved surgically, including loose skin, excess fat, and weakened abdominal muscles. The distribution of fat is one determinant of the improvement a patient will have from a tummy tuck. Fat in the superficial tissue is the type that is possible to pinch. This superficial fat may be removed through excision (tummy tuck) or aspiration (liposuction). If skin laxity or looseness is significant, the skin and fat should be removed with a tummy tuck. If the skin elasticity is adequate; however, the superficial fat may be removed through liposuction alone. Liposuction may flatten the abdomen, but it will not tighten the skin significantly. Patients who have soft, distended abdomens frequently have lax muscles or a separation of rectus muscle in the midline known as diastasis. This is common after multiple pregnancies making it a great procedure for ‘Mommy Makeovers’ or significant weight loss patients. When patients have excess skin that extends to the lateral hips and lower back or buttocks, an extended or circumferential abdominoplasty may be necessary. For most patients, the resultant incision is well hidden within underwear and bathing suit lines. The procedure usually takes 2 – 3 hours. Patients should prepare to rest for a minimum of one to two weeks after their procedure. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
