Planning for Broomfield Town Square: The New Heart of Broomfield

By Jennifer Hoffman, City and County Manager

Thousands of resident comments, ideas, and input the past several years have made it clear that Broomfield is missing something: a community center that is unique, authentic, and welcoming to all. The Broomfield Town Square will fill this need and create an innovative, inclusive, and one-of-a-kind city center where visitors and residents will gather, linger, and discover for many years to come. While the City is supporting this privately led development, it will not result in any bond/debt assumption for Broomfield.

The Broomfield Town Square (BTS) development will be nestled south of Broomfield Civic Center, adjacent to the Broomfield Library. BTS is being developed by the Broomfield Town Square Alliance and scheduled to begin construction in late 2022. The future phases of the BTS project were presented to Broomfield City Council on Aug. 31, and include a mix of residential properties (townhomes, apartments, multifamily housing, and senior living), with creative and modern commercial spaces, and an enlarged lake.

The plans show the former Safeway store, just north of W. 120th Avenue, reimagined as a Market Hall. An open air pedestrian walkway will create an outdoor feel as visitors explore local businesses, creative retail, unique restaurants, and also innovative office space. Entering from 120th, and continuing through the Broomfield Market Hall, patrons will discover community steps leading to the plaza and beyond.

The plaza will incorporate an art walk experience playing off themes seen at Paseo Bandera in Santiago de Chile, but with its own local character. The BTS plaza will host various public art pieces; anticipated to be both innovative and eccentric. This curated collection will also feature local artists and is envisioned to be placed below, beside, and above guests - the Broomfield art walk along the plaza is currently envisioned to be an immersive experience stretching from 120th Avenue straight through to First Avenue.

As the art brings the area alive, a new waterfront, and historic landmark will ensure Broomfield Town Square is uniquely Broomfield. The expanded lake is a cornerstone in the overall project, as it ties all the components together by creating a unique and authentic place that can only be found in Broomfield. The return of the restored retro “Welcome to Broomfield”’ sign brings a bit of Broomfield’s past into this modern and innovative development.

An interconnected and pedestrian-friendly network of streets, promenades, and trails will promote mobility and ensure accessibility for all users. With a curated mixture of local and unique retail, dining, and innovative workplaces, the Broomfield Town Square will create a community gathering space for all. Immersed within a beautiful lakeside setting alongside diverse housing options and business opportunities, BTS will be vivid and vibrant: the Heart of Broomfield.
