January 2025 Our Broomfield™ Magazine

EDITOR FROM THE Our Esteem

As the Our Broomfield Team and I finished up this January issue just before Christmas, it occurred to me that starting the year with a recognition issue is contradictory to January being about improvement and resolutions, and I kind of love that. Or maybe it is perfectly appropriate to be celebrating a shiny New Year, by celebrating the best of our community. Either way, I am pleased to share with you this milestone issue and hope you will indulge me a few additional musings.

2025 is the start of our 5th year in business! It seems like just yesterday that I sat on the living room floor with my husband and kids discussing starting this business as the darkness of Covid settled over the world. The odds were definitely against us. But I felt passionately that we needed to try, and that Our Broomfield would fill an important information void in the community. Today we are the only information vehicle that reaches 37,000 Broomfield homes each month. We did not get here alone! Through the years we have been thankful to work with hundreds of local advertising partners to get their businesses messages out to consumers.

In 2024 we were out and about more than ever! We were fortunate to be able to sponsor numerous community events and partner with many beloved local organizations. This past year I LOVED speaking with you, our readers. From the Broomfield Area Bites and Brews to Broomfield Days, and the Women’s Networking Event to the Broomfield Council on the Arts and Humanities Halloween and Holiday Events, it was so much fun speaking with you and hearing how you look forward to receiving the magazine each month!

We are proud to be your connector. And circling back to the top, that is what this issue is all about! Each year, we survey the community to learn which businesses are your favorites. Neighbors share tips with each other, right? To conduct Our Favorites, we hold an online survey from August through October. The survey is promoted on our website, through social media, and in this magazine. We had more votes than ever before this year! And we are proud to announce the winners starting on page 24. Check it out and next time you seek a new business to try, consider one of Our Favorites!

Looking to the year ahead, we are excited to continue bringing you valuable local content and information and seeing you out in the community. We are working on a few new exciting programs and partnerships and I can’t wait to share more details soon. We are continuing to expand our digital presence through our new website and social media channels and will soon be sending digital updates via email! If you would like to join our list, visit www.ourbroomfield.com and click the button in the upper right hand corner.

All of us at Our Broomfield wish you a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2025! Thank you for reading,

Listening to your Intuition

Happy happy new year

my friends! This year is all about listening to my intuition. No big resolutions for me. I actually like to listen to my intuition. I’m not always good at it, but I know it is always there speaking to me. It’s the understanding or knowing something without conscious reasoning or explanation. It’s your gut feeling. We all have it. Listening to it is a different story.

After 25 years in the corporate world, and then staying home with kids for another six years, I recently had the nudge that I really miss working. It’s all I could think about. But what should I do? What is my passion? I have been dabbling in hobbies for a few years, hoping one would stick so that I could make a business out of it. But nothing felt 100% right.

Until early November when I made the decision to join a holistic skincare company out of Germany. When this opportunity came along, something spoke to me from deep inside. It was that moment in life where I felt enlightened and inspired and it was all I could think about. I knew I had to listen and not look back.

This opportunity felt big and scary and overwhelming at first. I have four kids at home. My days and evenings are already packed. But once I experienced firsthand how my family felt using natural products, how my kids acne was clearing up, my wrinkles fading, I knew I had made the right decision. I write constantly about taking care of yourself, so this holistic company was in perfect alignment with my beliefs.

Many days I still feel too busy to do it all, but I choose to focus on the small wins along the way … the success stories, learning something new, helping one person at a time.

What is something that has been silently nudging you, finding its way into your mind over and over that you keep brushing aside? Do you want to cook more? Do you want a career change? Do you want to move? Do you want to try a new hobby? A healthier lifestyle? A simpler way of living? Maybe you want to show up more for your people?

Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try. Maybe writing ideas down is a good place to start. Set micro-goals. Celebrate progress. Focus on consistency, not perfection. Whatever it is that keeps showing up in your life, giving you signs, lean into that and explore what the universe is trying to tell you. Life begins at the end of your comfort zone. And when someone says you can’t do it, do it twice and take pictures.

The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why you were born. Once you know why … don’t let the fear of failing be greater than the excitement of succeeding. Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations. Cheers to your beautiful destinations that lie ahead.

Nourishment to Make You Glow!

Happy New Year! I like to start the new year intentionally. Not with a diet or restricting myself of anything, but rather adding in a few more healthy options so that I can glow from within. And for those of you doing dry January, a fun mocktail too!

Glowing Green Smoothie

Adapted from Solluna

• 4 cups chopped romaine

• 2 big handfuls spinach

• 2 stalks celery

• ½ lemon

• 1 apple, cored and chopped

• 1 pear, cored and chopped

• 1 overripe banana

• 2-3 cups water

• Ice cubes

Blend the first three ingredients until liquid. Add the remaining ingredients and blend with ice until desired consistency. Keeps in the refrigerator for two days.

Superfood Mocktail

Chia frescas are a great way to stay hydrated with benefits. Chia seeds are an excellent source of brain and heart boosting omega-3 fatty acids. They also love water and soak up any liquid they are in. They swell into a gel-like consistency when in contact with water which promotes gut health and stabilizes blood sugars. They are full of fiber which supports weight control and they also are a great way to carb load before a workout!

nutritionstripped.com

• 1 cup chopped strawberries (fresh or frozen)

• 4 cups water (or 2 cups water and 2 cups coconut water)

• 2 tbsp. chia seeds

• 2 tsp. fresh lemon juice

• 1 tsp. fresh basil or mint

Blend strawberries and water in a blender. In a pitcher combine the strawberry mixture, lemon juice, and chia seeds (stir well!) and allow to soak for one hour in the fridge. When ready to drink, stir in the basil or mint, pour yourself a glass and enjoy over ice!

• 2 cups broccoli florets

• 1/2 yellow bell pepper cut into 1 inch pieces

• 1/2 cup baby carrots sliced

• 3 tbsp. low sodium soy sauce

Add one tablespoon of olive oil to a large skillet or wok and heat over medium high heat.

Add chicken (in batches if necessary) and season with salt and pepper. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes or until cooked through. Remove from skillet.

Reduce heat to medium and add remaining tablespoon of oil to the skillet.

Editor’s Note: Each month Our Broomfield Magazine profiles different members of the community. Through Our People: Meet "insert name," our goal is to introduce Broomfield change-makers and highlight their contributions.

Q: Tell us a little about the two books you’ve authored.

A: My first book, The 18 Year Quest, is a small coffee table pictorial book, with several near-death summit stories, that was published in 2014 after having completed the summit of all of Colorado's Fourteeners in 2012, all while wearing the same pair of boots. My second book, Mountains for Peace, which just published, is a memoir of my work with Project Children while simultaneously climbing mountains and finding a healing process from a traumatic childhood.

Q. What do you enjoy most about the writing process?

A: Writing requires a mental focus like climbing a mountain. And the route to a successful story is not always apparent when you start out. It also requires collaboration and sound boarding with others to find the route to a good story.

Q: When did you become involved with Project Children?

A: Project Children was started in 1975 by Denis Mulcahy (retired NYPD Bomb Squad detective and twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize), his brother Pat, (retired NYPD officer) and others of the Irish community in Greenwood Lake, N.Y. I became the Colorado Coordinator in 1998. After almost fifty years of peace work, including bringing 23,000 Catholic and Protestant children and young people to America for summers together, it helped pave the way forward for the negotiation of the Good Friday Agreement and an end to The Troubles in Northern Ireland. The documentary, How to Defuse a Bomb, (narrated by Liam Neeson), recounts this powerful and emotional story. Combined with my Irish roots, (my mother is from Dublin and my grandfather was given full IRA burial honors when he died in 1965), I had always had a sensitivity toward the struggle for freedom for Ireland and for children in conflict.

Q: What do you and your family enjoy most when spending time together?

A: When we've travelled together, we've always enjoyed meeting other people and sharing our life journeys.

Q: What is your favorite restaurant and park in Broomfield?

A: The Burns Pub is our favorite restaurant and I enjoy walking around the open space near Highway 287.

Q: Who is the most interesting person, past or present, you’ve met in our community?

A: Dianne Primavera stands out the most. I met Dianne many years ago at the Broomfield Recreation Center. She was a member of the Colorado House of Representatives at the time. I learned of her surviving multiple cancer challenges and now, as Lt. Governor, she provides our Governor and Legislature with a wealth of knowledge and quiet leadership.

Q: What is something unique about Broomfield?

A: The sense of being relaxed and safe.

Meet Anthony Massey

About Anthony Massey

Anthony is a writer who has lived in Broomfield for 34 years and has also lived in London, Florida, Maine, and Virginia. He and his wife, Darlene, raised their two children, Erin and Elyse in Broomfield. His hobbies include hiking and traveling.

Q: In your book, “The 18-Year Quest” you describe summiting all of Colorado’s Fourteeners. What advice would you give fellow hikers?

A: Climbing Colorado's Fourteeners is hard, risky, and exhilarating. Be willing to embrace exhaustion and pain and try not to go alone.

Q: Who or what inspires you to be a better person?

A: People like Denis Mulcahy, who has dedicated his life to the work of peace in Northern Ireland while also willing to lay down his life to protect others while serving in the NYPD Bomb Squad.

Q: Anything else you’d like to add?

A: All of my travels, having flown more than three million miles, and meeting people from so many backgrounds and countries, has broadened my horizon so I now see myself as a citizen of the world.

A Legacy of Healing: From Mother to Daughter

The NICU nurses at AdventHealth Avista are passionate about caring for the tiniest patients at our hospital. Meet Clinical Nurse Coordinator, Lynn Sibley. Lynn has been a NICU nurse for the past 28 years! Lynn recounts her journey towards finding a career she has fallen in love with and how nursing has become a family affair:

I went to the University of Northern Colorado as a business/accounting major. My mom is a nurse - she always wanted me to follow in her footsteps. I was a typical teenager and chose anything but nursing. My business path only lasted two semesters and one accounting class. I quickly realized that my future was not going to be in business. Sometimes moms do know what’s best for their children even though it can be hard to admit. I changed my major to nursing but I didn't share it with my mom until the following Christmas morning. It was her Christmas surprise - she was thrilled!

Fast forward, I’m pursuing my nursing degree, it was my final semester of classes, and my nephew Jackson was unexpectedly born early at 27 weeks. A very tiny, fragile baby weighing in at 2 lbs., 12 oz. I couldn’t imagine how he was going to survive, or what possible deficits he might have. He had IVs, feeding tubes, breathing tubes, and lines in about every imaginable place. Sitting at his bedside, watching the nurses work and educate my brother and sister-in-law was absolutely amazing. From that moment on my goal was to obtain my degree and become a NICU nurse. Now, 28 years later, Jackson is not only thriving, but we will be welcoming his second child at AdventHealth Avista in March. We delivered his son, Nash last year. You would never know Jackson was born so tiny.

I tell everyone who asks, I am employed by AdventHealth Avista, but it hardly feels like a job. When you absolutely love what you do, it is enjoyable to go to work. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of nights that my body reminds me, it’s still

work after running around for 12 hours.

I love teaching new parents to become confident parents, helping them overcome fears of handling and caring for their newborn infants. Walking beside them as they face the highs and lows every NICU parent faces. Being a friend and someone who listens when they are facing one of the scariest times of their lives. Helping them realize that it’s okay to ask for help and that they aren’t alone, and reminding them that it takes a village to raise children today.

When I started at Avista 25 years ago, I never envisioned myself staying in one place for the duration of my career. Many of my co-workers have been there just as long and we consider one another as family. We have been through pregnancies, raising kids/teenagers, graduations, weddings, and becoming grandparents together and so many other important milestones. We have something unique and wonderful. We have fun and really do enjoy what we have been “called” to do. I take pride in delivering babies into our world and I can't imagine another job I’d rather be doing.

I got the same surprise my own mom received 28 years ago. My daughter, Delaney, followed in my footsteps and is now a NICU nurse.
