EDITOR Our Businesses Most of my life, I have worked for someone else. Numerous companies, many industries, dozens of bosses. Anyone who is employed feels a commitment, an obligation, to ensure that the person or entity that is paying them is successful. But when you own a business it is a whole different thing. When my husband and I started this magazine, as publisher it was the first time that I was the de facto decision maker and person responsible for the direction of a ship. I remember thinking in the early days, “I should ask someone about that.” And then quickly realizing that “someone” was me. I needed to decide what was right or wrong for the success of this business each day. The reality of that was sometimes stressful and heavy. But it was not too difficult to decide most things. Decisions were and are based on “what’s best.” What is the best content and information for the Broomfield community? What is the best, most valuable rate structure for our advertisers? What is the most fair way to represent our local organizations? How do I set up a structure that is rewarding and satisfying for the staff? What are the best decisions to ensure that we remain in business? When I ask that question, most answers come easily. But the road has not been completely smooth. Like most/all business owners experienced, Covid presented some extremely tough challenges. The printing industry was not immune from the rising cost of everything, and don’t even get me started on postage rates! As our costs climbed, I sternly resisted passing it along to our advertising customers, but finally had to listen to the gentle reasoning from my husband. If we did not keep pace with our costs we would not be publishing very long. And so there were some moderate increases about a year ago. Thankfully inflation has cooled a bit and we are leveling out. But I feel for our clients. Being a business owner is not for the faint of heart. And we consider each advertiser a true partner and are equally vested in each company’s success as we are our own. That is why I love this issue: Our Broomfield’s Our Favorites. Our very own “Best of Broomfield” as selected by YOU, our readers throughout the community. So please enjoy! Check out the list and learn about a business you may not know. The strength of our community overall is directly tied to the economic health of our businesses. EVENTS 2024 Women’s Self-Defense

Police Department Listening Engagement

Help shape the future of how the Broomfield Police Department (BPD) serves your community! The BPD is conducting an ongoing engagement effort to listen to the community in order to understand what the department is doing well, identify opportunities for improvement, and learn how the community wants to engage with police. Share your experiences, concerns, and impressions of the Broomfield Police by completing a brief survey at BroomfieldVoice.com/PDListens by March 15.

The Broomfield Police Department is proud to present an empowering and educational self-defense class for women. The program is called Her Own Hero and is offered free to all. The course is designed to provide an opportunity for women to learn necessary self-defense and crime prevention fundamentals, both physical and mental, to address a wide variety of situations. Attendees are welcome to attend regardless of previous experience or fitness level. Two classes are being offered to those who’d like to attend. The first is a basic, three-hour course that covers safety essentials such as boundaries, mindset, assertiveness, situational awareness, and more. Participants will learn simple and effective safety techniques designed to build confi-

dence. Those vital and life-saving skills will be a part of the participant’s “toolbox” of options moving forward. The advanced class is five-hours long and takes participants to a whole new level of empowerment. BASIC CLASS IS A PREREQUISITE. During this session, women have the opportunity to put their newly learned skills to the test as they “fight” their way out of specific scenarios. During the drills, participants will make a risk assessment of their situation, and then determine the best course of action.

You Are Your Thoughts appy New Year everyone! How are all of you feeling? Have you chosen your word of the year? This year I choose to believe. I choose to believe that people are good. That even when others are in the midst of their worst moments I will still believe and support and love. Everyone gets a pass. I am leading my year ahead with an open heart and love. My dear friend Joni sent this to me recently and it made a deep imprint: Hate has 4 letters, but so does love. Enemies has 7 letters, but so does friends. Lying has 5 letters, but so does truth. Sad has 3 letters, but so does joy. Negativity has 10 letters, but so does positivity. Life is two sided. Choose the better side. I find this powerful. For me, it’s not choosing the better side, but choosing the happier side. The side that makes me feel good.

The human spirit can be tested beyond comprehension, and the human spirit can also prevail. In the end, you get to choose. We have choices. Every single day when we wake up we have a choice. Am I going to carry anger from a past hurt or am I going to forgive and move on? Am I going to let the muddy dog prints on my white carpet ruin my day or will I be happy to have a dog that shows me such unconditional love? Am I going to be annoyed that snoring kept me awake part of the night or am I going to wake up grateful that he loves me so much and always has coffee waiting? Sometimes I want to have the pity party and be mad or sad or angry. And that is okay. But I am also going to realize how bad I feel when I choose that negative route and then try to steer myself in the other direction. I know several people who had a lot of heartache in 2023. One never knows when it will be their time to have to endure so much pain that it hurts to breathe. So much bad news that

they feel it in the depths of their soul. The place where you go so low, you have to dig yourself out and it feels like you will never see the sun. The human spirit can be tested beyond comprehension, and the human spirit can also prevail. In the end, you get to choose. Another good friend, Jill, told me about a book called E2 by Pam Grout. She knows I’m into the power of positive thinking and this book has experiments that prove your thoughts create your reality. It is crazy how these experiments work! It can help with those times when you need guidance making a decision, or want a sign from the other side, or even asking for a sign that you are on the right path. Every experiment that I have done so far has proven powerful and helpful. Maybe give it a shot this year! The new year can be whatever you want it to be. A listening tour is exactly what it sounds like: an opportunity for the community to speak and representatives of BPD to listen. The tour will consist of public, in-person events (listening sessions) across Broomfield where community members (like you!) can participate in activities and small group discussions to help improve policing in Broomfield. “As we recognize the importance of collaborating with our community and the critical importance of being transparent and approachable, we also recognize the need for us to reach out to residents to better understand what you need and want from your police department,” said Broomfield Chief of Police Enea Hempelmann. The goal of both the survey and listening tours is to provide

New Logo Tells Bal Swan’s Story of Love, Inclusion, and Helping Children Soar CREST

The school’s colorful new logo features five elements, each of which represents a fundamental theme at Bal Swan.

s Bal Swan Children’s Center prepares to celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2024 with a storybook-themed celebration in March, the center recently upgraded its brand to reflect a new chapter in its own story. The school’s colorful new logo features five elements, each of which represents a fundamental theme at Bal Swan. “We asked the designer to focus on how to visually represent our core values,” said Debbie Kunz, executive director of Bal Swan. “Our core values are really love (a sense of belonging and safety), inclusion, individualized learning, and interdisciplinary teaming (therapists and teachers working together).” At the bottom of the logo, cradling all of the elements above it, is a large hand. Kunz said the open hand signifies staff and the community working together to both hold Bal Swan’s children safely but also serve as a launching pad for them to soar. “It represents the adults around us in the world who are making the choice to love and support kids and see them thrive,” said Kunz. Above the hand is a heart, which emphasizes the importance of social-emotional teaching and meeting kids in a place of emotional safety and belonging. Above the heart is an abstract figure of a person that is meant to recall the center’s previous logo but add a butterfly-like aspect and vertical energy to represent the goal of helping children thrive and soar. Also included in the logo are mountains with the sun, which not only expresses the center’s pride in Colorado but also the hope of tomorrow. Just above the sun is a branch that conveys the growth Bal Swan is hoping to see over the next couple of years, in addition to the growth of children while they are students at Bal Swan. The bright and varied colors are a striking visual representation that Bal Swan is a place for children, and that it is friendly, diverse, and works together with the community, said Kunz.

Fundraising

Bal Swan also celebrated a successful day of fundraising in December during Colorado Gives Day, an annual day of giving that raised more than $54 million for nonprofits across Colorado in

2023. Kunz described the giving directed toward the center as an outpouring of the community to support the work it does. “I feel a lot of responsibility to be a good steward of the public funds that we receive,” said Kunz. “There's a cost to investing in young children, and there is a lot of evidence if we're looking from a business perspective that the investment is going to pay off. My philosophy is that these kids are worth it.”

Planning continues for the center’s primary fundraising event, the Bal Swan Ball. The 60th anniversary event is scheduled for March 2, 2024, at the Omni Interlocken Broomfield. Bal Swan invited its very first teacher to attend the event, and several longtime supporters and partners, including Dance Arts Studio, also will be on hand. “It’s a storybook theme – ‘Our story starts with us’ – so we’re trying to reflect on our roots and honor our heritage and then also look forward,” said Kunz. “We’re really going to try to show the continuity of heart and community through the work that we’re doing.” Among those sharing their stories about Bal Swan’s impact are families of students, including the mother of a young student who was born weighing less than 2 lbs. in December 2019 and facing a variety of developmental challenges. The teachers and therapists not only helped him adjust to attending school but have helped him thrive, and surrounded his family with support. “Thirteen months after starting, my son is excited to come to school, loves learning from his teachers and peers, and is flourishing beyond my wildest dreams,” the student’s mother said. “When I tell him it is time for school, he runs to the door. He says ‘My school!’ the whole way to school. The team at Bal Swan has taken the time to create better relationships with my son than most of my family and friends. “With all the amazing things Bal Swan has given my son, they also gave me the gift of community, support, and other moms going through all the things too just trying to give their kids the best chance at success.”

Mural Installed in George Di Ciero City Building Reflects Beauty of Broomfield

mural chosen by the citizens of Broomfield is now on display at the George Di Ciero City Building, which provides numerous city services and also houses the City Council meetings. The building is named for Broomfield’s former City and County Manager who passed away in 2020. Local artists Stacey Reynolds and Julia Williams were invited to participate in the project based on their experience with largescale, installation-based digital artwork and murals. The artists were asked to come up with a mural design that incorporated elements that reflect Broomfield and the environment in which community members live, work, and play. More than 3,000 people voted on the two designs through the City of Broomfield’s engagement platform, Broomfield Voice. Reynolds’ design was ultimately selected. “The building represents a connection between the community and the government workers that support their daily lives,” said Julie Story, director of communications for the City and County of Broomfield. “Both of these groups are key to the success of any community, and installing a colorful mural that both reflects their values and provides a welcoming environment to the city building supports a feeling of belonging for all who work or visit the space.” Once the mural was selected, a collaborative effort began to install the mural last month in the building’s unique stairwell. The effort included the city’s Arts & History Department staff, the facilities department, the communications and engagement department, the city manager’s office and local vendor InkMonstr, which produced the vinyl panels that make up the mural.

The project is part of the Broomfield Art in Public Places program overseen by the Arts & History division of the Library, Arts, History, and CSU Extension department. Its mission is to cultivate opportunities to connect, create, and thrive. “The Art in Public Places program aims to enliven public space, reflect community spirit, engage the community and elevate a sense of belonging, among other goals,” said Story. “This project aligns within all goals, many of which were key elements of the design for both artists.” Reynolds said her design, titled “Beautiful Broomfield,” is meant to add color and relaxation to the space while showcasing Broomfield’s uplifting vision and providing opportunities for photographs. “I wanted the mural to be a calming space that reflected the beautiful nature we have around us in Broomfield,” said Reynolds, a professional graphic artist who also channels her creativity into painting in watercolor, block printing, and designing small projects for family and friends. “The building has a really beautiful solar calendar built into its architecture, so I created the design around that to emphasize the beauty of seasonality in changing leaves and upward movement as it climbs the stairs. Each leaf design is based on a tree that is native to Colorado.” The original design was sketched over several versions on an iPad drawing application, which allowed Reynolds to play with colors and placements as she iterated on the design and referenced photos of local leaves and mountains. The final product was created in Adobe Illustrator, which allowed the design to scale as needed. This is not the first mural Reynolds has created for Broomfield. “I’ve done a few traffic boxes and was fortunate to do a mural by the ballpark as well,” she said. “I enjoy these projects because they are creatively open-ended, allowing for the artist’s expression throughout the process. I also really love to create artwork in public spaces for others to enjoy! We have so many beautiful spaces in our community and I am grateful to both live and work here.”

bout Tammy: I have been blessed to live in Broomfield for over 30 years. I have a passion for our community and the people in it. I am a connector by heart, in business, Tammy Degenhart with friends, and by helping those around me build community and expand their business. My faith, family and friends mean the world to me.

Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.

A: I have been married for over 30 years. My kids were born and raised here and graduated from Broomfield High School and went on to attend and graduate from the University of Colorado, Boulder. I feel very blessed they both live close by.

Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?

A: I worked at Amgen until I had children and then started working from home. I built a large organization of 800 consultants with Southern Living at Home. That is where I fell in love with working with people! I am currently the Sales Manager for Our Broomfield Magazine. I love it because I get to meet and work with

AMAZING people in our community and help them build their business through connecting with them and our magazine.

Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community?

A: Papa Franks is a long time favorite. Also 3 Margaritas, Pearl Wok, North Side Tavern, Great Scotts, and First Watch. We have many amazing restaurants in the area.

Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?

A: Tina Eichner, because of her passion for helping people and keeping our community feeling small and connected even when we have grown so big. I love that it still feels like a close community.

Q: What advice would you give to people? A: Love people where they are at and give grace. Don’t we all need that?

Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?

A: Our Broomfield because of the great articles that speak to our history. I remember advertising in it over 15 years ago.

Q: If you could choose anyone that is alive today and not a relative; with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would you meet for this lunch? A: Any of my best friends because they have shaped who I am today. But if I

A: In Broomfield with my family close by. Also, hoping to still be volunteering at FISH and other local charities.

Q: (Even for friends or family), what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you? A: My husband and I were featured on a segment on a National Morning Show that highlighted our wedding.

Q: What would you rate a 10 out of 10? A: A day with my family and dogs just enjoying some food and laughs.
