FROM THE

EDITOR

Our Heart, Our Home

Someday, I might live in another community, but for most of my life Broomfield has been my home. During college and in young adulthood I “lived” in Fort Collins and Denver for brief periods of time, but those places never became a home. Broomfield has always been home. So, I don’t really know if other towns have the same special sense of safety, security, concern, and community caring that I have experienced here. I know they do. They must. You read about it and you see it portrayed in movies. Yet living in Broomfield brings me a rather Dorothy-like feeling of, “There’s no place like home.” I feel it at press time as we plan for our first Our Broomfield Our Favorites Winners Celebration (look for highlights in the March issue), and prepare final details for the presentation of awards at a party to be held at Broomfield’s own Chipper’s Lanes. I feel it having breakfast with Mr. Paul Derda to talk about the Chipper’s event, reflect on Broomfield’s “old days,” and thankful to have him act as Master of Ceremonies to present the awards. I feel it as I catch up with friends and colleagues at a recent Chamber of Commerce Happy Hour at Planks & Paint and enjoy a New Year chat with an old friend and classmate from Broomfield High School Mike Lutz, who is the Food Manager at our Broomfield FISH Food Bank. Mike and I talked (as we often do) about our amazing home and the generosity we regularly witness. He shared how the 2023 Holiday Season was busier than ever at FISH, with more and more people needing assistance. He told me how even as they worked to meet needs, in the door walked an unexpected benefactor with a generous year-end gift that helped significantly. If this touches your heart and you would like to support FISH, it’s easy to do. Visit broomfieldfish.org. I feel it when our Sales Manager Tammy and I learned about the pipes bursting at Bal Swan Children’s Center and the damage to the gym and the library. Right away we wanted to reach out and had a phone call with Bal Swan Director Debbie Kunz to see what they needed. We were not the only ones! That evening, the school was featured on two local news stations and the community also rallied via social media. With the outpouring of support, I imagine by now that their library of water soaked books has been nearly replaced. But the issue with the pipes just amplifies a greater need at Bal Swan. The original building has been updated and mended many times, but a new facility is needed. That is one reason Our Broomfield is proud to once again support the upcoming Bal Swan Ball coming up on March 2. If you want to learn more about that event and ways to help Bal Swan, read our article on page 26. So, February is the month of love, but these stories of Broomfield’s heart are not unique. I see Broomfield Valentines shared throughout the community year round. And that is just one reason no matter where I am, my heart lives here. This is home. Until next time. Thanks for reading,

iscover the power of your voice and creativity with Broomfield Out Loud, an innovative project empowering the Broomfield community through storytelling and art. Share your unique story, unleash your creativity, and uplift Broomfield voices by participating through collective expression. Broomfield Out Loud is a community storytelling project in which stories from Broomfielders, like you, are brought to life through performances and exhibits. Run by the City and County of Broomfield (CCOB) Arts and History division, Broomfield Out Loud pairs community members with local artists, facilitating the creation of exhibits and performances that breathe life into the diverse stories of Broomfield residents. Broomfield Out Loud will take place across four distinct stages: Voice, Create, Experience, and Grow. Voice, the first phase of Broomfield Out Loud, sees the Arts and History team and the Friends of Broomfield History uncovering and collecting stories from the Broomfield community. These stories will find a permanent place in the city's historical archives. During this phase, a jury panel will select ten stories for transformation into various forms of creative artwork. CCOB is still looking for and accepting new stories for this project. If you’ve got a story to share, visit Broomfield.org/BroomfieldOutLoud and submit a Broomfield Out Loud interest form. There are various ways to share your story including a quick recorded conversation and storytelling session with the team. Artistic individuals in and around Broomfield should look forward to Create, the second phase. During this time artists will be invited to respond to an art call, submitting proposals to commission new works that retell the selected stories. Selected artists will collaborate closely with storytellers to bring these narratives to life through their chosen artistic disciplines. Fall of 2024 will kick off the third phase, Experience. This stage will see the public unveiling of the artworks. These events may

include free performances, exhibits, galleries, pop-ups, and film screenings all funded by CCOB. Grow is the fourth and final phase of Broomfield Out Loud. During this time, the Arts and History team will explore educational opportunities that include developing curriculum that incorporate stories and creative works from the project as primary sources. The aim is to perpetuate the sharing of community stories through creative expression while connecting themes from storytellers' narratives to broader community resources. The Broomfield Out Loud project received funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Rose Community Foundation. Hike to St. Mary’s

Glacier By Bette Erickson

T

he most romantic Valentine’s Day I remember is a trip to the Silver Lake Lodge preceded by a snowy trek to St. Mary’s Glacier. The rugged 400-foot elevation gain to St. Mary’s Lake and Glacier presents itself in only .75-mile along a trail that is serious about ascent. But once you arrive at the lake framed by a gravel beach, you’ll feel as if you’ve discovered a secret alpine haven. St. Mary’s Lake and Glacier is an ideal destination with opportunities to hike, snowshoe, ski, and glissade. The area is located 9.2 miles north of Idaho Springs in the Clear Creek Ranger District of the Arapaho National Forest. Besides the serene natural beauty, here you’ll be treated to an up-close look at one of the few remaining glaciers in Colorado. However, technically, some call it a large, perennial snowfield. To begin the hike, follow the chain link fence at the end of the parking lot to the sign that indicates, “Glacier Hike.” The rugged roadway leads you uphill on the left. The route is essentially left, left, then right. More details: Stay left when presented with your first fork in the trail. A second option requires another left along the deserted cobbled roadbed. When you come to a large weathered, gray tree stump — that’s your cue to go right along the wide expanse. A

short, nearly level rocky stretch leads you directly to the lake with the large snowfield quietly sitting above it. If you want to hike closer to the glacier, cross the bridge at the lake’s outlet and follow the east flank of the hill to the snowfield. Choose a nice boulder to enjoy a snack in this sublime area. Rest awhile and snap some pictures before returning the way you came.

If You Go …

To the trailhead: From westbound I-70 take Exit 238 for St Mary’s / Alice – Fall River Road. Drive carefully 8.7-miles up winding Fall River Rd. to the large trailhead on the left. Leave the parking area by walking a bit further up the road to begin your hike where the chain link fence ends. Distance: About 2 miles out and back; more if you head up beside the glacier

52 Weeks of Reading A

By Missy Ruzicka

reader lives a thousand lives before he dies … The man who never reads only lives one.” -George R.R. Martin

As the cold weather of February takes over the sunny Colorado skies, you may find yourself with more reading time but not sure what to read next. With Broomfield Library’s 52 Weeks of Reading Challenge that will not be a problem. “Rainy days should be spent at home with a cup of tea and a good book.” -Bill Watterson Photo by Pat Eichner

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | February 2024

Once again, this year the library has thrown out the challenge of reading for 52 weeks guided by a set of criteria. The 52 prompts can be found on the 2nd floor of the Broomfield library. What better way to spend a snowy night than cozied up with a good book. There are 52 weeks in a year and there are 52 prompts in the challenge to help you find a new book to read. Here is a peek at some of the 2024 prompts and some ideas to go with those prompts. Pick a story set in Colorado. Cenntenial by James Michener is a classic not to mention the various Stephen King books set in our great state. For those younger readers there is The Capital Ghost Mystery by Michelle Barone which takes place in our own Colorado Capital building. “If you don’t like to read, you haven’t found the right book.” -J.K. Rowling With the success of the Disney+ series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan would be a perfect fit for the prompt about reading a book with mythological characters. The series is a fun adventure for both young readers and the young at heart. Books can take you on excellent adventures while staying curled up under a blanket with a hot cocoa.

“I guess there are never enough books.” -John Steinbeck Another prompt is one that will help you branch out and read something that you normally would not even think about, and that is reading a book that one of the library staff has on their recommendation list. You may not think about picking a fantasy book until you see Sword Catcher by Cassandra Clare on a staff member’s list and it might turn out you really enjoy reading it and look forward to the next book in the series. “The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go!” -Dr. Seuss The Broomfield Library’s 52 Weeks of Reading challenge is run through Beanstalk and it is extremely easy to register and log your reading either every day or weekly, checking off the prompts as you go. Rise to the challenge of reading all year long and make it a personal goal or a family team event, either way adventures will be had.

Two million! One in ten children under the age of five in the United States receives Imagination Library books through the program. Mrs. Parton grew up in the small town of Sevierville, Tennessee. To enroll your child in the program you can go to the Imagination Library website or https://broomfieldrotary.org/. As a local partner, the Rotary is seeking donations to make the program a reality in our community. Only $25 buys a new book delivered EVERY MONTH to a child for one year. al Swan Children’s Center’s 60th Annual Ball is only a month away.

The storybook-themed event, which will take place March 2 at the Omni Interlocken Broomfield, celebrates the people who have been part of the school’s story and those who have been impacted by it. The theme incorporates classic storybook tales, and attendees are invited to dress up as their favorite storybook character to add a touch of magic to the elegance and charm of the evening. Bal Swan teachers, administrators, and staff are a huge part of the center’s story. One staff member said they work at Bal Swan because it doesn’t feel like work, rather it feels like they are living out their passion and purpose every day in a special place. “There truly is an indescribable magic that lives in the air and the people of the Bal Swan community,” the staff member said. “We are a tight-knit group of genuinely compassionate and hardworking people that care so deeply for the children and families that we work with, for each other, and our leaders care deeply about us. I miss it when I'm gone and I am constantly motivated to see how I can do more and be better. I have never been able to say all of those things about a job before and it's an amazing feeling!” This staff member described a meaningful moment when a child who had graduated from Bal Swan came to drop off his younger sibling and jumped into the staff member’s arms. “As I hugged him, he let out a long, calming breath and said, ‘I feel so happy now. I just want to stay right here.’ This moment has just been a reminder for me of the magic of Bal Swan and how children feel safe and loved here.” Following are a few other thoughts shared by staff members about why they choose to work at Bal Swan and some of their most meaningful moments.

26

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | February 2024

“One of my favorite memories of my work at Bal Swan is the Ball! It was overwhelming to see the support that parents and members of the community give to our school because they believe in the good that is happening here. It was so much fun to see everyone all dressed up, dancing, and having fun together!” “I work at Bal Swan for the environment that each child is special and we meet each child where they are at. This has been a long-standing model and it is what has kept me here for 19 years. I have never worked in an environment as enriching as Bal Swan.”

"

“I have so many meaningful moments from non-verbal children becoming verbal. Children arriving in walkers and graduating across the stage on their own. Parents who support what we do and give back to our school and community.”

“It’s a cutting-edge inclusive school with dedicated, loving, and knowledgeable staff who are committed to best practice and ongoing learning to benefit all children and families who walk through our doors!”

“I like the smaller class sizes, the two-deep teaching teams, and the feeling of belonging I get from all of the staff. I made the switch from clinic therapy to Bal Swan for an opportunity to support children across settings from school, to home, and the community. I also wanted to feel a part of a community and have found that at Bal Swan.”

“A favorite moment of mine has been attending my first Ball and seeing and hearing the love that the community has for our little school. I was in awe of the stories shared, the community coming together and the generosity of all within our community.”

“I remember being at the SpiderMan park with one of the classes. A smaller child climbed to the top of the ‘web’ and couldn’t get down. One of our admin’s daughters climbed to the top and talked the child all the way down.”

Romance At Home ow does a nice romantic dinner for two at home sound? Send the kids to grandma’s and turn down the lights, light a few candles and settle in for a night of delicious homemade food. Start with this month’s recipe (below) and finish the night with store bought Berry Chantilly Cake from Whole Foods. If you are feeling adventurous you can make your own … try searching google for a copycat Whole Foods Chantilly cake recipe. It is also very easy to dip a few strawberries in melted dark or milk chocolate for an easy yummy dessert. To spice things up and keep the conversation flowing, ask each other fun questions (we love the book 808 Conversation Starters for Couples). You will be laughing all evening. For the main dish, I hope you enjoy this copycat Hell’s Kitchen Lobster Risotto – it’s so delicious! And perfectly served with a crusty French baguette.

Easy Lobster Risotto Ingredients: Quick Lobster Stock • 6 cups water (or 5 cups water/1 cup good white wine) • 1½ lbs lobster shells (I used 3, 8 oz lobster tails) • 1 medium onion, diced • 1 carrot, peeled and sliced • 1 rib celery, sliced • 1 tomato chopped (or 8 oz diced tomatoes) • 1 bay leaf salt & pepper, to taste Lobster Risotto • 1 tablespoon EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) • 1 tablespoon shallots, small dice • 2 cloves minced garlic • 1½ cups Arborio rice • ¼ cup white wine • 4 cups lobster stock (see above) • diced lobster meat, reserved from lobster stock • 2 tablespoons butter (more, as needed)

32

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | February 2024

• 2 tablespoons mascarpone cheese (or 4 tablespoons cream cheese) • zest of 1 whole lemon • salt and pepper to taste • 2 tablespoon chives (fresh, chopped) • shaved parmigiano cheese Instructions Quick Lobster Stock Bring 6 cups of water to a boil, add fresh or thawed lobster and continue to boil for 4 minutes. Remove lobster and plunge into ice water. Remove the lobster meat and dice for the risotto, then refrigerate. Return the shells to the boiling water. Add onion, carrot, celery, tomato, and bay leaf then add salt and pepper to taste. Simmer the broth for 20 minutes then strain out the lobster shells, vegetables, and spices. Reserve broth and keep on medium heat for use in the risotto. Lobster Risotto Bring a large skillet or frying pan to medium heat, add olive oil, shal-

lots, and garlic. Cook until softened (1-2 minutes). Add the Arborio rice, cook (stirring occasionally) for 1-2 minutes before adding white wine. Add wine and cook for a minute, keeping the rice moving (stirring frequently). Add one-third to half of the lobster stock, cook (stirring occasionally) for 3-5 minutes until the rice has absorbed most of the liquid. Add the remaining lobster stock in ladled increments, allowing the rice to slowly absorb the liquid until the Arborio rice becomes slightly translucent and is an al dente firmness and the core can still be seen in the center (about 20 minutes total time once broth is added). Add the reserved diced lobster meat, butter, mascarpone cheese, lemon zest, and salt and pepper (to taste). Stir vigorously until all ingredients are well combined and a thick, creamy risotto is achieved. Serve and garnish with parmigiano and chives.

ave you noticed a spike in your electricity bill from last year that you can’t quite explain? Or maybe your air conditioning or furnace is running all day and doesn’t cycle on and off like it used to? It could be time to have a professional come out and check your heating and air conditioning systems to ensure they are running efficiently, said Adam Torrez, owner of Northglennbased Unique Heating & Air. For 17 years, the company has provided heating and cooling repair, installation and maintenance as well as air duct cleaning and indoor air quality products for residential and light commercial properties. You may have seen Unique Heating & Air on TV. The company sponsors the seven-day forecast on Fox 31, helping people know what’s going on outside with Denver’s sometimes extreme weather so they can be comfortable inside. Unique Heating & Air’s 20 employees make service calls throughout the Denver metro area and are NATE-certified and knowledgeable about all brands. The company also has worked to earn a certification with the Environmental Protection Agency. Unique Heating & Air offers free estimates and 24/7 service along with a 10year parts and labor warranty on new systems. Torrez has more than two decades of experience in the field. He has built his business on a model that emphasizes fair pricing and quick service. One way the company tries to make things as easy as possible for homeowners is by offering service agreements that provide members priority service and extra discounts, among other perks. Maintenance agreements typically include tune-ups in the fall for furnace systems and in the spring for air conditioning systems. Annual maintenance is the best way to keep your indoor air systems working efficiently and effectively, said Torrez. Professional air conditioning maintenance usually includes a thorough cleaning of the outdoor unit and a check of components including coils, blowers, fan motors, condensers, and drains. The main thing homeowners can do on their own to keep their systems healthy is to check their air filters at least once a month and change them out at least every three months, said Torrez. When choosing an HVAC company, Torrez recommends looking at online reviews and making sure whoever is doing the work is licensed and insured. Verify that they're a reputable company so that if you need follow-up or warranty work, the company will still be there, he said. Grant Programs

Help Cultural Programs and Local Businesses By Kristen Beckman

T

he City and County of Broomfield offers several grant programs designed to assist both arts, history, and cultural endeavors as well as entrepreneurs and businesses within the community. The Arts, History, and Cultural Council supports the arts grants program both through guideline review and funding decisions, particularly in its role as Cultural Council for the Broomfield County Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) grant program. In addition, three grant programs are available through the Arts & History division.

Arts, Culture, and Science Grants

Each year, the Broomfield City Council offers funding to support arts, culture, and science programs offered to the community through the Arts, Culture and Science Grants (ACS) program. These grants are intended to serve local groups, organizations and educators that are not receiving SCFD funding to provide or participate in arts, culture, and science programs and projects that benefit Broomfield residents.

Sister City Grants

President Eisenhower started the Sister City program in 1956 to establish greater friendship and understanding between the people of the United States and the peoples of other nations through direct contact. The City and County of Broomfield supports such people-to-people connections through its Sister City grant program. Grants encourage the exchange of diverse cultural, educational, artistic, scientific, and professional ideas and programs by funding programs, projects, and activities of officially recognized Broomfield Sister City organizations.

Busing Subsidy for Education (BSE) Grants

Recognizing that transportation funding is a common barrier to educational experiences outside of school sites, the Library, Arts, History, and CSU Extension Department offers Busing Subsidy for Education (BSE) grants. These funds are intended to support transportation subsidies for students to participate in arts, culture, science, and humanities programs and events otherwise not available in school. “These grants provide opportunities to increase access and inclusion for artists, youth, families, and adults in Broomfield to participate, enjoy, and celebrate creativity and culture in our community,” said Megan Gilby, Arts & History Manager for the City and County of Broomfield. “These grant programs have supported hundreds of programs and organizations, from creating an educational experimental vegetable planting garden and funding original professional contemporary dance productions, to STEM-based outreach activities in the Broomfield Library and providing MIDI keyboards for elementary students. The Arts and History division is proud to play a small role in these dynamic and creative programs to ignite curiosity in Broomfield.” In addition, Broomfield supports entrepreneurs and businesses in the community through two grant programs.

Enhance Broomfield Program

The Enhance Broomfield program provides grant funding to businesses that want to expand the capacity of existing operations, facilitate the creation of jobs and invest in the long-term sustainability and vitality of their business while benefiting the residents of Broomfield. The program has awarded more than $325,000 to small businesses across Broomfield since 2022.

Grants may be used for marketing activities, architectural services, remodeling spaces to increase capacity or activity, working capital and more. The program is administered by the Broomfield Economic Vitality Department.

Entrepreneur Microgrant Program

The Entrepreneur Microgrant program, also offered through the Economic Vitality Department, partners with new and existing startup businesses by providing funding for activities that will facilitate early startup growth and stimulate the business environment of Broomfield. Funds can be used to expand the capacity of existing operations, increase economic activity and revenue generation, and invest in new ideas and innovations. This program uses Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds designated for business owners that are Low to Moderate Income as defined by the U.S. Department of Housing and

Urban Development (HUD). Corazón Printing was awarded an Entrepreneur Microgrant for 2023. The Latina-owned and Woman of Color-Owned unionized print shop specializes in a wide range of services including high-quality printing, comprehensive mailing services, creative design solutions, and expert consulting services. It plans to use its grant to invest in advanced printing machinery and technology that will not only increase its efficiency but also allow it to offer a wider range of printing services to its customers.

“By expanding our services and enhancing our operational efficiency, we can contribute more significantly to the local economy,” said Ana Temu Otting, president and CEO of Corazón Printing. “This includes creating job opportunities and offering superior services to other local businesses and community members. The Entrepreneur Microgrant program is not just a financial boost for Corazón Printing; it's a catalyst for growth, innovation, and community engagement, helping us to solidify our role as a key contributor to the vibrant business landscape of Broomfield.”

AdventHealth Avista Nurse Donates Kidney to Give Teen Greater Odds at Finding Perfect Match

C

aring for others has always been second nature for Carly Decker, a nurse at AdventHealth Avista’s surgery center. Carly’s family friend, 15-year-old Asia, suffers from an autoimmune disease which creates antibodies that attack her kidneys and have the potential to attack other organs as well. Asia has gone through many surgeries, including a kidney transplant from a deceased donor which her body unfortunately rejected years ago. In hopes of giving her kidney to Asia, Carly began going through testing to see if she could be a match for Asia. Although the results looked promising at first, additional test results showed that Asia’s body would likely reject Carly’s donation. Even though Carly couldn’t give Asia her kidney, she donated her kidney to someone else in need on behalf of Asia, putting Asia at the top of the recipient list when her perfect match becomes available. Because of Asia’s autoimmune disease, finding a match is very difficult. “A kidney from a living donor would be life changing for her,” said Carly. Carly quickly recovered from the surgery and feels completely back to normal. “I was pleasantly surprised to learn how safe and straightforward donation was,” said Carly. “Donors and recipients are screened so thoroughly that if there is even one red flag, they won’t move forward pairing the donor and recipient, keeping the safety of both at the forefront.” Though the original wish for her kidney to go to Asia fell through, Carly is pleased that her kidney is a perfect match for someone in Pennsylvania. Along with the kidney

DonateLifeColorado.org they received, they were also provided with Carly’s contact information if they want to connect with her in the future. "As a mom of three young boys, I thought what if one of them was in Asia's shoes in ten years? If my boys needed something and another person could help, I would do anything for that gift," said Carly. Carly’s message to others from this experience is simple. “Ordinary moms and nurses can make a big difference – you can change people’s lives. If you’re interested in organ donation, I wholeheartedly want to encourage you to learn more about how you can help. Everyone can play a Asia and Carly role, whether it’s donating a kidney or just spreading awareness. You might be surprised by how many people in your life have been affected by organ donation.” In early January, Asia found out she had been matched with a donor and received her new kidney a week later. Thanks to this amazing gift, Asia and her family are hopeful she can enjoy her teenage years and live the rest of her life to the fullest. Observed every year on February 14, National Donor Day is an observance dedicated to spreading awareness and education about organ, eye, and tissue donation.
