FROM THE

EDITOR Our Teachers I took a day off recently to go hiking in Nederland with my husband Pat. As we drove through Boulder and up the Canyon toward the trail head, I was struck by a vivid memory. I was in 8th grade traveling in a SuperCab pick-up with several other students and Mr. Gray. Coach Gray. It was the first year that Broomfield Heights Middle School was open and Mr. Gray was our homeroom teacher. He was taking a group of kids to his property in Nederland to go sledding (teachers could do things like that in the 80s). Team building. Mr. Gray managed the Broomfield Swim and Tennis Club in its early years and he and his kids taught me to swim long before he was my classroom teacher. He was a strong and powerful person, even somewhat imposing, but what I remember most about him was the very gentle interior and that he was often a champion for the underdog. From him I learned fairness and compassion. The memory caused me to reflect on some of the other teachers who helped shape me. A trio of teachers helped make me a writer. Mrs. Brinker, in the 2nd grade, noted my “talent” and encouraged me to practice it to perfection by being a writer AND a reader every day. Later, in my high school years, Mrs. Babb taught me the importance of clarity in writing and respect for the rules of the English language. Another high school teacher, Mr. King taught me to be brave in my writing, to use my voice to have impact, and that the greatest rewards tend to come with a certain amount of risk. The first male teacher I ever had, Mr. Terlau (5th grade), taught me to widen my viewpoint through social studies lessons heavily based on real world experiences, including economics. In the 7th and 8th grades, Mr. Birnberg taught me the value of being informed. Current events were a daily topic in his class and you had better not show up without a firm grasp on the day’s headlines. There were many others, but these teachers were the most significant sculptors in my life. With the start of school looming, there is a lot of focus on kids and back to school. But please indulge me a moment and join me in giving a nod of respect to our educators. I have been married to one most of my life (Mr. Eichner, 5th grade) and this year our daughter is starting her career as a high school English teacher (go Ms. Eichner). Our other daughter faithfully tutors several students in math each week (thank you Mrs. Mayes). I am proud of all of them. Thank you to all of our local educators! Your value cannot be overstated. Have a great year ahead.

WeatherTech Car Show

Plans for the new Broomfield Town Square continue to progress as developers refine development plans with community input. Initial plans for the Broomfield Town Square, formerly referred to as the Civic Center, were crafted in 2017 through a series of community focus sessions. This plan was designed to be extremely walkable and feel uniquely Broomfield. Featuring an enlarged Community Park Pond, entertainment spaces, and public art, the plaza would be located northeast of 120th Avenue and Main Street. The greatest addition within the first plans were retail and restaurant space, housing, offices, and community common areas. While these plans did include the construction of new structures for these uses, they also include the repurposing of the old Safeway building for retail and co-working space. In the last two years, formal plans have begun to take shape. Mainly, the new plans include additional residential units and commercial development. Developers have created a custom zoning plan to address the specific land use. Construction would begin with housing including mixed-use apartment buildings and three-story townhomes. In the updated plans, affordable housing is required in the development. The former Safeway building would be converted into a market hall with a mix of retail and restaurant space, co-working space, and community common areas. Additional commercial development will be included on the ground floor of the mixed-use apartment buildings. The main gathering area of Broomfield Town Square would be a large plaza near E. 1st Avenue Future plans in the later stages of development include a beach front and boathouse at the northwest edge of the lake with space for the future development of restaurants around the lake. Space for a future expansion of the Broomfield Library and Broomfield Auditorium are also included in the later stages of the project. Development will be phased over time and is projected to be completed in 2029. The most current plans are under staff review now. An updated schedule is anticipated to be shared on September 13, 2022, at 6:00 p.m. at the City Council Meeting. Broomfield residents can participate in the meeting by calling 1-855-695-3744. Residents can also watch Council Meetings live at Broomfield.org/LIVE or on channel 8.

BUSY FAMILIES

End Summer WITH

LAST MINUTE FUN! By Lisa Payne

Did anyone else spend their summer as an Uber driver, shuffling their kids from one thing to the next?

This summer felt busier than ever. Maybe I’m not used to the world being back open and this was actually what it was like two years ago. There has been a LOT going on. But I always tell myself that this time in the car with our kids will end so I soak up our talks and just being next to each other even if no words are exchanged. My oldest gets his driver’s license in February and he won’t need me. Ouch. I wonder if he will still drive me places just for fun? I dread back to school. I absolutely love having my kids and all of their friends around all summer. I’ve learned to embrace the mess and hungry bellies and constant sleepovers. I’ve decided I can sleep when I go to heaven. Some parents love back to school. They need the schedule and consistency in their world. No matter which category you fall into, it’s happening and we all have to shift into that mode this month. So let’s make the last part of summer extra fun (I hit up my daughter Tennyson for most of these ideas)! Get outside and eat! This covers so much ground. Have you been eating your meals al fresco this summer? Not often enough? Get out there for every meal – sunrise breakfasts, picnic lunches in the yard, and dinner under the stars. Take it a step further and try cooking outside too. Roast hotdogs and smores over the fire pit, grill and smoke all those wonderful garden veggies with your favorite protein and even plug in an electric skillet and cook pancakes on the back patio. Meals are always quality family time and your kids may be more willing to put their phones down and eat with you (or even talk!) dining outside in nature.

12

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | August 2022

Speaking of eating (my favorite thing to do), make homemade ice cream together. Each person in the family can come up with their own flavor and have a taste test for the winner. Don’t forget to have all the toppings on hand such as candy, sprinkles, sauces, and whipped cream. Get outside some more and plan an entire day of fun. You could start with a hike, color the entire driveway in chalk art, go thrifting, have a water balloon fight, and then end the night with yard games and an outdoor movie. Gather your softest blankets and pillows and pop lots of popcorn and snuggle in with your crew. And don’t forget to have a lazy day! Clear your calendar, shut off your phone, and spend the whole day in your pajamas and binge movies and read books with your kids. Don’t even bother cooking. Order in or have the kids cook that day. And most importantly … don’t feel guilty about it! We all need to do this at least once a week as far as I’m concerned (I wish). Whatever your heart desires, spend your last weeks of summer doing exactly that. Refill your heart with what it needs most. No guilt allowed. Lisa Payne writes about home, health, and family. You can reach her at lisa@paynefam6.com.

With Gratitude

FOR OUR BROOMFIELD PUBLIC SERVANTS By The City of Broomfield

The City and County of Broomfield has always prided itself on being a great place to live and work. It is a community enriched by its residents and those providing critical public services on behalf of the greater public good each and every day. Therefore, we celebrate the importance of our City and County of Broomfield employees by declaring August as Employee Appreciation Month.

O

ur success as a community is often dependent on the dedication and commitment of Broomfield’s employees. Nearly 1,300 full-time, part-time, and temporary employees work each and every day to positively affect the lives of Broomfield’s residents and visitors. Though some departments are more visible than others, many people work behind the scenes each and every day to ensure we deliver quality city and county services. Broomfield employees ensure we have clean drinking water; a safe community; guidance to protect our public health; education opportunities in the arts, recreation, literacy, sciences, and history; and facilitate a beautiful, walkable, and enjoyable community for all. While the City and County of Broomfield celebrates our employees internally, we invite Broomfield residents to join in the celebration as well. Appreciation does not have to be anything more than offering a simple “thank you” when you see a City and County of Broomfield employee at work.

We value our employees and their daily contributions and are always looking for qualified people to join the Broomfield team. If you or someone you know is interested, please take a look at the job opportunities currently available at Broomfield.org/Jobs

In the ER, our caregivers are ready to serve you and your loved ones, right now, with expertise and compassion. “You won’t find a better team of health care professionals anywhere,” says Kathy Adam, a Clinical Nurse Coordinator who works to ensure all patients receive care in a timely, safe Kathy Adam and caring manner. “My mission is that of any professional nurse - to give competent and quality patient care, be a patient advocate, and treat each patient with kindness and understanding.” Kathy has been delivering whole person care for 21 years at Avista, and is one of many caregivers here who have served the Louisville and surrounding communities for decades. “It is a privilege being able to help others and this is my way of doing so!” “I have been a nurse for over 34 years, and I’m on a mission to ensure we remain caring, safe, focused, and inclusive.”

Sharon Robinson shares that mission as a House Supervisor. Her job takes her to every department, including the ER, where she helps patient care, logistics, and other issues as they arise. “I enjoy critical thinking, problem solving and looking outside the box for solutions. I love being part of a Sharon Robinson team of caregivers and associates that want to make a positive difference each day,” Sharon says. “We have an amazing team of Physicians, Nurses, EMS crews, and so much more. This group is truly committed to providing the best Emergency care and advocating for patients and families.” The commitment is also personal for Sharon and her colleagues. “I love that I have opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life. To know you were there for someone when they needed support is truly special and humbling.” If you or a loved one should ever need us, we’re here for you 24/7 at 100 Health Park Dr. in Louisville, near S. 88th St. and Dillon Road.

PROFILE

FirsTier Bank The New Bank on the Block By Missy Ruzicka

With Broomfield and the surrounding area booming with new businesses and residents, it’s nice to know that there is a bank that can provide all the services of a larger banking institution, while still being just small enough to deliver personalized individual attention. You work hard for your money and with FirsTier Bank of Broomfield, customers are so much more than a number; you’re a member of the community the bankers want to help grow and be successful.

FirsTier Bank might be new to Broomfield but the company is well established having gotten its start in Kimball, Nebraska back in 1955. As the company has spread to surrounding states one thing that hasn’t changed is its dedication to the vision of helping each local community grow and prosper. This family run bank has strong ties to the Broomfield area and saw an opportunity to open their style of community bank right here in Broomfield at US 36 and Wadsworth. FirsTier has already taken part in Broomfield traditions such as Broomfield Days, become members of the Chamber of Commerce, and even adopted a shelf at FISH. Upon entering this beautiful bank, which opened its doors in February of 2021, you are greeted by a welcoming team willing to sit and talk about your immediate banking needs along with

helping plan for long-term goals. The knowledgeable personnel can assist with everything from opening personal checking and savings accounts to applying for a business loan. An approachable staff is just one thing that sets the community bank apart from bigger institutions, and they take pride in knowing their customers and building relationships that strengthen the community we live in. FirsTier Bank of Broomfield is a full-service FDIC member bank that understands how important business owners are to our economy. They know both big and small businesses are needed to keep our communities growing. Broomfield Library Selects

Beekeeping Memoir for Community Reading Program By Kristen Beckman

Every year since 2006, Broomfield community members have come together to read one book and participate in a variety of programming centered on the book, including a chance to hear the author speak.

20

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | August 2022

One Book One Broomfield is a citywide reading program led by the Broomfield Library that aims to create a shared sense of community through literature. The One Book One Broomfield title is chosen by a combination of a committee and a community vote. The One Book One Broomfield committee diligently discusses potential titles to bring to the community. Once the titles are narrowed down, the committee takes their top three or four choices to a community vote. This year’s selection is “The Honey Bus: A Memoir of Loss, Courage, and a Girl Saved by Bees” by Meredith May. May’s memoir shares her own journey as a young girl finding her

- 5TH ANNUAL -

place after her parents split up through her time spent with her grandfather, who kept honey bees in an old military bus. May learned about life through the secret world of bees, which provided an escape from her tumultuous reality and taught her to care for herself. All the while, she forged a relationship with her grandfather and developed an appreciation for the magic of nature. ‘The Honey Bus’ by Meredith May was loved by the committee for its prose, its message, and its appeal to our community,” said Katherine Skeels, a librarian at Broomfield Library. “It is a memoir crossed with a beekeeping journey. Even if you are not a fan of nonfiction, May’s writing and the pacing of the book makes it an engrossing page-turner.” Author, Meredith May May is both a memoirist and a children’s book author, whose other works include “I, Who Did Not Die,” the true story of an Iranian child soldier who risked his life to save an enemy during the Iran-Iraq War, and “Loving Edie: How a Dog Afraid of Everything Taught Me to be Brave” about lessons she learned from her usually anxious dog. In addition, May is a fifth-generation beekeeper who maintains several hives. Previous One Book One Broomfield selections include “Deep Creek: Finding Hope in the High Country,” by Pam Houston, and “Afterlife” by Julia Alvarez. Those who want to read “The Honey Bus” can stop by the library to pick up a copy from the One Book display or place a hold through the library catalog. E-book and e-audiobook versions are available through the Overdrive or Libby applications. The library buys almost 100 copies of the selected title and they are checked out consistently throughout the program, said Skeels. For the first time since 2019, the One Book One Broomfield author talk will be in-person this year. The author talk will take place on Nov. 5 at 7:00 p.m. at the Broomfield Auditorium with a book signing to follow. In addition to the author talk, there will be various supporting programs to help support community conversations around the title, said Skeels. Information on those programs will be available soon at broomfield.org/ onebook and on the Library’s program calendar. “Books are a wonderful way to bring the community together,” said Skeels. “Community read programs give neighbors and community members a chance to experience the same book at the same time. It provides a way to have important conversations, form connections, and bring people together with a common thread. It is also a great opportunity to introduce folks to a book they might not have picked up otherwise!”

Make

YOUR CHILD A

READER By Missy Ruzicka

“ EVERYONE IS A

READER; SOME JUST

HAVEN’T FOUND THEIR FAVORITE BOOK YET." ~ Anonymous

24

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | August 2022

Reading is one of my favorite things to do but that wasn’t always the case. When I was younger, I hated reading! My mom still can’t believe her nonreader became an elementary school librarian. One of my favorite parts of my job is watching kids find that one book that turns them into a reader and *click* just like that, they love reading.

Education has seen a shift in how we approach reading with kids. Gone are the assigned books and book reports with deadlines. We give the kids choices, everything from which book they pick to how they report on it. We find kids are more likely to finish a book they picked because it’s interesting to them than a random book their teacher picks. Giving kids the choice sets them up to explore the different genres to see what they like and find the endless amounts of adventures in that genre. Did you know that children who read a mere 20 minutes a day are exposed to 2 million words a year? Research by Scholastic Books shows us that those same kids are likely to score in the 90th percentile on standardized tests. Just 20 minutes a day can make all the difference in a child’s education. Now don’t get me wrong, I know that sometimes getting those 20 minutes is like pulling teeth, but repetition becomes habit, and healthy reading habits are imperative for boosting your child’s love of reading and their comprehension. You can do the “Five-finger read” to help your kids get that just right book at their reading level. Have them grab a book they think they will like and open it to any page. Read that page and keep track of the words they don’t know on their fingers. After reading the page if they have one finger up, that book is too easy for them and they can keep it for a dessert book (a book for fun), but they should try to find something a little more challenging. If they have two to four fingers up then that book is a just right book and perfect for them. If they have five or more fingers up that book is a little hard for them and kids who pick too hard of books can become frustrated and discouraged. If they really have their heart set on that book, read it with them. Reading an adventure together fosters a love of reading for the whole family. Screen time doesn’t have to be the enemy of reading time, there are a lot of really good award-winning reading apps for kids. Mom’s Choice award-winning Tikatok StorySpark by Barnes and Noble is for your pint-sized publisher. Kids can write and illustrate their own story and publish it for $3 on tikatok.com. There is also Parent choice Gold Award winning Tales 2 Go which streams on-demand unlimited access to more than 1,000 stories for $10 a month. Screen time with educational apps teaches kids a new media to enjoy reading through. Children learn and grow differently so don’t get caught up on “milestones.” Focus on the adventures your kids are going on while reading, ask them to keep you updated on what’s happening in their stories, ask them to predict what they think is going to happen. They are likely to stick with a book, if they see you are excited about it too. It’s never too late to fall in love with reading and kids who see parents reading are more likely to pick up a book. Remember, “Everyone is a reader; some just haven’t found their favorite book yet.” - Anonymous

lunchbox

YUMMINESS By Lisa Payne

Every August when school rolls around, I have big plans to put more homemade food in my kids’ lunches. Fresh hot dishes in thermoses (yes I’m from Minnesota – others may call them casseroles), homemade applesauce, plenty of baked goods, and fresh granola bars. Yeah well that may happen for the first week and then we are back to grocery shelf snacks and pre-packaged everything. It’s very sad because I LOVE to cook. Life just gets busy. In fact, I just asked my daughter what her favorite food is that I make for her school lunch and she said spicy Taki’s. I am officially ousted as those are 100% prepackaged, food color laden, and fried rolled chips. Eeew.

HERE ARE A FEW IDEAS FOR EASY, DELICIOUS ROLL UPS AND SNACKS FOR ANY PALETTE AND PICKINESS LEVEL.

TORTILLA ROLL UP IDEAS You can use any flavor tortilla of any size. Once filled, roll them up and slice several times or cut them in half and roll in plastic wrap.

TACO: Spread tortilla with warmed refried beans, sour cream

seasoned with taco spice, shredded cheddar cheese, and black olives if desired.

CAPRESE: Layer tortilla with tomato slices, fresh mozzarella

cheese slices, fresh basil leaves, and drizzle with balsamic glaze.

BLT:

Spread tortilla with a thin layer of mayonnaise or ranch dressing, layer on lettuce, tomato slices, and crisp bacon.

PBJB:

Spread tortilla with a layer of peanut butter, any flavor of jelly, and sliced bananas.

TENNY’S FAVORITE: Spread tortilla with Nutella and lay a whole banana in the center and roll it up.

MEAT and CHEESE: Use whatever condiment you love with any meat and cheese combo.

PIZZA: Spread pizza sauce on the tortilla, cover with shredded mozzarella, and slices of pepperoni.

Faith, Excellence & Service:

why nativity: faith & reason is growing By E. Bardeau

Our family moved to Colorado weeks before the pandemic sent students home from school. The struggle to keep three elementary kids engaged in studies while balancing our new work situation was not unique. And, like many others, we searched for alternative schools. After considering several formats and touring local options, we happily enrolled our children at Nativity: Faith & Reason. Our story is similar to families across the community and the country, as seen in the statistics showing Catholic education enrollment up +3.8%. But COVID protocols were only part of the reason we chose to invest differently in our children’s future.

Academic Excellence: Catholic schools are expected to provide instruction comparable to public schools, and the Archdiocese of Denver consistently exceeds the standard. Nativity also reinforces excellence with smaller class sizes, math and reading focus, and extra-curriculars. More than the curriculum is the underpinning “Faith & Reason” philosophy and the desire to develop critical thinkers. Father Michael Carvill shared, “We want to give the students a critical ability to question, verify and discover the truth for themselves of the proposals that we make to them. It’s only verified conviction that will carry the kids in a world in which everything is saying the opposite to the faith.” Accessible Education: Importantly, Catholic schools are an affordable investment and help strengthen our community. At Nativity, 16.5% of costs are covered by generous donors and 21% of students receive financial assistance.

In a May 2022 survey of Nativity: Faith & Reason families, 85% cited Catholic values and 75% cited academic excellence as their reason for choosing the school, followed closely by teachers and community. 91% rated their school experience Excellent or Good. Catholic Values: Proverbs 22:6 tell us to "Train the young in the way they should go; even when old, they will not swerve from it." The formative years of elementary school offer parents the best opportunity to prepare their children to answer the call to holiness and to pursue a saintly life. Catholic schools, like Nativity, surround a child with a love for Jesus Christ, for his Church, and for the sacraments.

Many families are reconsidering education, and are concluding that an investment in Catholic education is an investment in their child’s future. The Roberts family, longtime Nativity parishioners, shared: “We chose Catholic education for our children because we believe that school is an extension of our home. We know that our administration and educators share our values of community, honesty, and integrity. We feel confident each day that, at school, our children are safe, loved and cared for as much as they are with us at home.”

BROOMFIELD’S

There are crews working year round to make Broomfield a beautiful place to live and visit. The summer is their time to shine, and you’ve definitely seen their work in our local parks and neighborhoods, and around city buildings. Flower pots are bursting and flower beds are blooming. The abundance of color and texture in the local environment gives our beloved city an incomparable charm. Brittany Jensen is a Park Operations Foreman and Horticulturalist for the City and County of Broomfield, and she was able to provide some insight into the city-wide planting process as well as some tips for home gardeners.

Preparations begin earlier than you might expect, with the majority of annual flowers being ordered in January and some special request flowers being ordered the October well before they will be planted! Greenhouse growing begins for facility planters in March so the beautiful displays will be ready by May. Local preparations, such as tilling soil and topdressing annual beds, begin in April to make the ground ready for another year of planting. “In addition to the 50 planters that we send out to be grown for us, the city crews do a large amount of planting. The horticulture crews plant and maintain 76 annual beds, 21 street reservoir planters, 37 facility reservoir planters, and another 35 permanent planters at our city buildings,” said Brittany.

In order to achieve the brightly colored and abundant displays you see around the city, 16 large racks are DON’T UNDERESTIMATE filled nearly to a level of bursting with a THE VALUE OF QUALITY variety of flower species. These include SOIL, GOOD DRAINAGE, Marigolds, Petunias, Geraniums, Snap AND PROPER NUTRIENTS Dragons, Cannas, Dahlias, and other annual blooms. This assortment can stand up to the heat and retain vibrancy all summer long with the proper care. The city deploys two water trucks that quench the beds and pots throughout the week. There is also usually a truck running through the weekends to keep the displays in top shape. To help maintain moisture in the beds, crews apply pre-emergent about two weeks after planting and then use mulch as a topper. Just like home gardens and yards, the beds are routinely weeded to maintain the health of the beautiful flowers. Fertilizing and pest-control further help the plants survive through the summer so locals can appreciate them as long as possible. All this to say, our city requires a lot of work to maintain and we are lucky to have skilled horticulturalists dedicated to this craft! Brittany has some words of advice for home gardeners looking to maximize their growing experience: don’t underestimate the value of quality soil, good drainage, and proper nutrients. Although it is tempting to give your garden a little extra spritz while the sun is beating down, be careful not to overwater. Too much water can cause rot and fungus to spread quickly. Good airflow and soil mixes can assist in drainage to prevent overwatering. All of the flowers used in local displays are great for home gardens but you can also experiment with exotic annuals and perennials. Brittany likes Dianthus, Rudbeckia, and Osteospermum. Let the beautiful flowers of Broomfield and your own backyard brighten your days! August 2022 | Our Broomfield™ Magazine

Reach Your Goal

By Bette Erickson

Over the last half dozen years or so many area residents have made use of the Broomfield 100 Outdoor Passport to help them reach a goal of taking thousands of steps per day.

Back in 2015, city and county planners came up with the clever Broomfield 100 Challenge. The goal of the three-month Broomfield 100 event was to encourage outdoor exercise, expose participants to the city’s expansive and well-planned trails system, and generally get residents enthused about healthy activity. The kick-off of the Broomfield 100 this year coincided with National Trails Day (the first Saturday in June), and interested residents showed up at Anthem Community Park. The turnout was impressive with walkers and cyclists eager to log their first Broomfield 100 entry. Passports are available online or via hardcopy at the Citizen Assistant Center at the George DiCiero building, One DesCombes Drive. Participants are encouraged to hike or bike the variety of routes offered – generally summing to 100 miles. Hence the name, Broomfield 100. In the center of the Passport, just for kids, is the Nature Explorer Booklet so the little people in your life can get in on the fun. The online access allows participants to contribute to a community guest book, photo scavenger hunt, and more. The summer-long outdoor community challenge is enjoyed by hundreds of residents each year, culminating on Broomfield Days, Saturday, September 17. Challenge finishers can expect prizes given out that day at the city and county tent on the south side of Midway Park.

S R O M U R

BY NEIL SIMON

Are you ready for some laugh-out-loud entertainment? Award-winning writer, Neil Simon, created this production what could be called a farce - based on the fact that truth becomes slippery when multiple people retell it.

As in, remember the telephone game from school? By Bette Erickson

The show takes place at a large, tastefully-appointed Sneden’s Landing house, where the Deputy Mayor of New York has just shot himself. Though only a flesh wound, four couples are about to experience a severe attack of playful hilarity. Gathering for their 10th wedding anniversary, the host lies bleeding in the other room, and his wife is nowhere in sight. His lawyer, Ken, and wife, Chris, must get “the story” straight before the other guests arrive. As the confusion and miscommunication mount, the evening spins off into classic comedy. Joanna Ramsey is the director of this performance. Ms. Ramsey taught at Westminster High School for 25 years and the school’s theatre is named for her. The show is brought to us by The Broomfield Community Players (BCP). “In this show, Neil Simon is the master of adult comedy with misdirection, miscommunication, and farce,” explained Ms. Ramsey. “It’s unbelievable how silly we adults can be at times and this show is a delightful romp.” BCP was formed in the spring of 2016 as an all-volunteer group providing opportunities for adults in our community to explore or reignite their interest in the dramatic arts. Broomfield Community Players, administered by the BCAH, is a group of volunteers who produce theatrical shows in the Broomfield community and neighboring municipalities. To be sure, accessible performance art is vitally important to a community’s cultural identity. “High school student interns will be hard at work supporting this production in all the magical ways audience members rarely notice - unless something goes awry,” said Ms. Ramsey. The BCP has created a robust theatre company that includes Broomfield residents and members of neighboring communities and generously collaborates with area community theatre organizations. Appealing to a broad audience, the BCP produces theatre relevant to modern times, continuing to appeal to a broad Denver metro-based audience. THE FIRST

Crea+ve Immersion COMING THIS FALL FROM BCAH

By Megan Mayes

The Broomfield Council on the Arts and Humanities (BCAH) works year-round to support local artists and provide residents with entertaining and intriguing experiences. This fall, BCAH will be hosting a new artistically stimulating event to showcase the wide variety of creativity and art that is alive right here in our city. The 2022 Creative Immersion Gala will be an exclusive interactive event you do not want to miss!

Before you even get to the event, attendees are encouraged to get their creativity flowing by dressing on the theme Masquerade. BCAH Director Keri Dillingham describes this as “creative black tie, where you can be a moving work of art.” For those who don’t have masks at home, do not worry! Masks will be in abundance with wearable masks created by local artists and face-painting available for purchase, as well as decorative display masks that will be put up for auction. Hors-d’oeuvres and cocktails will be served during the silent auction, creating a fluid environment for guests to explore all of the installations. Professional performers will be both indoors and outdoors to showcase artistic talents in aerial acrobatics, modern dance, improv comedy, adult story-telling, and orchestral music. Attendees also participate in games and a paddle raise to contribute to fundraising efforts. The evening will end with exploration experiences including telescopic star-gazing, neon gaming, guided painting, musical experimentation, and a creative immersion room created by Lumonics Light and Sound Gallery. Lumonics is best known for their installation in Meow Wolf Denver, and gala attendees will be treated

to a one-of-a-kind experience with their light sculptures. The first annual Art Gala will be hosted at The Establishment on September 8 at 6:00 p.m. If you are interested in attending you should act quickly, as there are only 200 tickets available for this firstof-its-kind Broomfield event! Tickets can be purchased on the BCAH website under the Events tab. This same web page provides information on sponsorships, program ads, and silent auction donations. BCAH appreciates the support of the community and local businesses, and they are still accepting sponsorships for this event. The Gala is a new event that will contribute significantly to the fundraising efforts of BCAH as well as showcase all of the programs the council supports. As a non-profit and membership-based organization, the council relies on the contributions of the community to sustain and deliver artistic and cultural experiences for all Broomfield residents to enjoy. For nearly 50 years, BCAH has been building quality programs to nurture creativity and encourage community participation. By purchasing a ticket or making a donation, you can help the council reach their funding goals to hire staff and continue growing in overall programming. Your support continues the Broomfield tradition of inclusive access to more than 70 events and workshops that increase our quality of life through artistic expression. Keri said it beautifully: “Creativity is essential to a well-balanced life, and we want to make sure Broomfield is an enriching place to work, play, and visit. We want you to be educated and entertained right where you live!”
