FROM THE
EDITOR Our Gifting To quote a well-loved favorite line from the movie Elf: “Santa? Here? I know him!” Yes. Santa’s coming! And this is the perfect issue for everyone who is getting ready. Especially if you value shopping local, and especially if you lean toward experiential or consumable gifts which are both quite in vogue! Check out our Local Holiday Food and Gift Guide beginning on page 26 for some great ideas. And if you are still trying to catch the holiday spirit, you will also want to read our list of local holiday events beginning on page 10. At our house and our stage of life we are beginning to think a little differently about gifting. Last Christmas instead of showering our now adult kiddos with gifts, we took a family vacation departing the day after Christmas. While it was a little strange to NOT be shopping throughout the month of December and the number of gifts under the tree were far fewer, I was more relaxed leading up to Christmas, and our daughters gave the pivot a resounding thumbs up afterward. Everyone loved it so much that we are doing something similar again this year. Gifting each other our time and experiences together. I have tried to apply this to other gifting situations as well. My younger daughter would always opt for a massage over a new sweater, and my older daughter would always prefer a play or a concert to something wrapped with a bow. I am not perfect at it yet, but always shifting and remembering what they will truly treasure. We went to Fiddler on the Roof at the Boulder Dinner Theatre this year to celebrate my Mom’s and Mother-in-Law’s birthdays, which are both in November, and created a memory that I hope will last much longer than something in a box. My husband and his brother, who live in different cities, opted to meet each other for a college football game this year rather than exchanging birthday gifts. They had a great time and created a memory that will last for years. A “thing” can be an experience too. I know that my brother and my brother-inlaw would both prefer a fine bourbon or a rare cigar to anything from a sporting goods store. These gifts feel like a reward and bring them community and relaxation. The approach does not need to be completely exclusive. There is great fun in shopping and selecting something that is just perfect for your loved one; in wrapping it, presenting it, and watching them delight in receiving it. And believe me, I still love to buy “things,” especially for my girls. But doing this selectively with thought and intent, and without getting swallowed up in consumerism. I hope you find in this issue some ideas for heartfelt gifts for those you care for; both the kind that are wrapped and the kind that are lived. And may this holiday season bring peace and joy to all. Until next time. Thanks for reading and Merry Christmas,
Tina Eichner, Editor & Publisher

T
he holidays can be filled with grief when we have loved ones no longer with us. The traditions and family dinners can bring on feelings of anxiety and deep sadness. Some people may not show up at all, to avoid those painful feelings. If this is your first holiday without a loved one, go easy on yourself and give yourself permission to relax and take care of yourself. People will not have high expectations of you during this time. What if there was a way to honor those who are no longer here? A new tradition you could start? Not all memories will feel painful or sad to everyone. Some may find that this is a great opportunity to connect with each other and reminisce, offering feelings of support, love, and joy. Here are some ideas to get your creative juices flowing, and perhaps inspired to start your own new tradition. What if you made their favorite meal on Christmas Eve, in their memory? Did they love a certain soup, or always request or make a special dish? Maybe there are several random things they loved, and you can make a potluck type meal with each of their favorite dishes. You could also set a place for them at the table, with a picture of them on their placemat facing everyone. If your family members are open to it, perhaps people go around the table and share a favorite memory they have with the deceased person. Or put a playlist together of their favorite songs to play during dinner. Not everyone likes to talk out loud about memories because it brings up too much emotion. You could have a notebook where family members write a little paragraph or two about a favorite memory they have, and add to this special notebook each year. It would be fun to have the notebook sitting out each holiday season for loved ones to look through. Do you have videos of your loved one while they were alive? Someone who is good technically could put together all of the videos to watch together as a family on Christmas morning or whenever your
family gets together. You will laugh and cry and feel like they are with you. Any picture books you have of them could also be shared and passed around at the same time. Did your loved one have a special cause they believed in or a charity they volunteered for? You could gather the family and volunteer together in their honor. If you can’t volunteer together, perhaps everyone donates to that special cause in their name. I bet your loved one had a favorite Christmas movie or maybe they loved watching Hallmark shows! Gather everyone to watch these together and feel their presence in the room with you. My last but not least idea, hang a stocking for them on the mantel to keep their memory alive. As you are missing them or have a special thought come to you during the month of December, you could write little notes to them and stick them in the stocking. It would be fun to look back on all the accumulated notes in years to come. Even when someone is no longer with us in their human body, their spirit and memory lives on with you forever. May you find some comfort this holiday with these ideas, and may you feel their presence throughout the whole season and beyond. Happy Holidays! Lisa Payne writes about food, home, and family. Begin Your Holiday Festivities by Cutting your Own Christmas Tree

Broomfield’s Stephen Katsirubas finds the perfect tree last year in the Roosevelt National Forest. He said he and his daughters make it a yearly tradition to harvest their own holiday tree. Courtesy photo

aybe it’s the warm, vanilla scent of pine, or perhaps it’s the love and labor required, but there’s really nothing like a snowy trudge in the forest to find the perfect Christmas tree. Whether it’s a longstanding family tradition, or something you’re considering for the first time – Have you given any thought to harvesting your own Christmas tree from the forest this year? Broomfield resident Stephen Katsirubas said he and his three daughters have made choosing just the right tree, cutting it down, and To secure an Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests Christmas Tree Permit, visit: www. bringing it home a tradition. He enjoys being outdoors recreation.gov/tree-permits. Christmas Tree with his girls and having fun, permits went on sale Thursday, November including all the laughs they 9. The cost is $20 per tree with a maximum of five trees. To avoid crowds, schedule your have while doing it, he said. tree-cutting adventure on a weekday. For Jim Admire agreed. “When visitor information call 970-295-6600. the kids were younger, we would get a Forest Service tree cutting permit and cut down a tree the day after Thanksgiving every year,” he wrote to me via Nextdoor.com. “Lots of fun memories.” While his kids are now grown, he said he and his wife, Mary Ann, are looking forward to grandchildren someday to go with on the Christmas Tree hunt. If harvesting your own Christmas tree this year sounds appealing, keep in mind these guidelines: • Do not cut in or near developed recreation areas, such as a campground or picnic area, or near any residential areas • Do not cut in wilderness areas, special protection areas, experimental forest or anywhere else that is marked as “No Cutting” • Tree trunk size must be six inches or less in diameter (strictly enforced) • Cut tree six inches or less from the ground • No topping of trees • No cutting trees within 75 feet of any road, trail, and all bodies of water • Avoid cutting trees marked with blue paint • Handsaws required (chainsaws prohibited) • Permits must be visible on the tree for easy viewing or visible on your dash • You cannot cut holiday trees on the Boulder or Clear Creek Ranger Districts

Keep in mind, due to impacts from wildfires, there have been numerous changes to the availability of holiday tree cutting opportunities. Find your adventure. PROFILE
Broomfield Med Spa Colorado Center for Aethetics & Rejuvenation Provides Superior Aesthetic Care with Gentle Touch
A
By Tina Eichner
s a Colorado lady of a certain age, and increasingly aware of how our harsh sun and dry climate impacts my skin, I recently made a visit to Colorado Center for Aesthetics & Rejuvenation for a little pampering and some advice on how best to care for my skin this winter. Owner Laura Gajewski recommended an appointment with their esthetician Melody and suggested a few treatments. I arrived at their beautiful, cozy, and relaxing spa-like facility and was warmly greeted by both Laura and Melody. My appointment started with a few photos under special lighting so that Melody could assess the condition of my skin. We then went into her treatment room where I was given a warm blanket for my comfort during the treatments.I felt very relaxed! Melody started with dermaplaning which is a cosmetic procedure that utilizes a scalpel or dermatome at a 45-degree angle to scrape away the top layer of dead skin. The goal of dermaplaning is to exfoliate the skin and remove dead skin cells and facial 'peach fuzz,' also known as vellus hair. The gentle scraping is not at all painful and it felt great knowing that the dry skin was being removed. Melody followed that with the DiamondGlow Facial (by Allergan Aesthetics the makers of Botox, Juvederm Fillers & CoolSculpting & CoolTone) which I had heard a lot about from friends and was anxious to try. The procedure is considered the ultimate facial for ladies and gents that want to take their GLOW and skin care further. DiamondGlow uses a patented recessed diamond tip wand to simultaneously The professionals at The Colorado exfoliate, extract debris from Center for Aesthetics & Rejuvenation pores, and infuse the skin with professional-grade SkinMedica Pro-Infusion Serums, when pores are open and most receptive. The facial involved a bit of pressure on the skin but was also refreshing and relaxing. Immediately after, my skin felt bouncy and moist, and I did indeed have a glow! I was thrilled to have super soft and supple skin for almost a week after (even with normal cleansing and make-up use). And even after that my skin continued to be softer than normal and I looked relaxed

and refreshed for days – almost like after a restful vacation! The DiamondGlow can be repeated about once per month to build and maintain its great results. When we were finished, Melody expertly recommended some products suited to my particular skin issues, particularly sun protection, and I scheduled another appointment. The winter months, when we spend more time indoors, are a good time Founders Dr. Timothy to utilize treatments that might and Laura Gajewski leave you more sensitive to the sun’s harsh effects. A good sun protection plan is a must for beautiful skin year round! So we set a plan for the winter. Colorado Center for Aesthetics & Rejuvenation has been offering medical spa services to Broomfield and the surrounding area since 2018. Founded by Dr. Timothy and Laura Gajewski, a practicing urologist and medical sales and marketing professional respectively. In addition to offering a full spectrum of facial treatments, Colorado Center for Aesthetics & Rejuvenation is proud to be a top-of-the-line practice dedicated to overall aesthetics and wellness. The clinic specializes in CoolSculpting, Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy, laser aesthetic services, facial and body treatments, medical grade skin care, and supplements. As the medical director of the facility, Dr. G invests in the continued education of his staff so they can be experts in their field on the most up-to-date information and technology. The concept of medical spas has been gaining popularity for the last 15 years in conjunction with the expansion and evolution of aesthetic treatments. Only highly-qualified, licensed, and trained medical professionals provide services, so you can be confident in your treatment at the hands of a Medical Doctor, Nurse Practitioner, Physician’s Assistant, or Registered Nurse. The professionals at Colorado Center for Aesthetics & Rejuvenation are ready to help you with a consultation to meet all of your therapy, treatment, and product needs. Our skin is precious and valuable! Give yourself the gift of elevated skincare this holiday and schedule your visit today!

Celebrate the Holidays with BCP’s at the Broomfield Audi By Bette Erickson
Charles Dickens’ not to be missed holiday classic, “A Christmas Carol” is back on the Broomfield Auditorium stage this month presented by the Broomfield Community Players (BCP). Directed by Melissa Williams, the adaptation by Steve Blount is a family-friendly production closely following the original Dickens’ story of reflection and redemption. Using minimalistic sets and sumptuous costumes, the heart-warming story takes audiences back in time to Victorian England. The story unfolds on Christmas Eve as Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his former business partner, Jacob Marley. Marley reveals that his own greed and hard-heartedness have resulted in an afterlife of turmoil and chains. He warns Scrooge that his fate will be the same unless he changes his ways. Three spirits visit Scrooge that night, giving him insight into the past, present, and future, ultimately culminating in a moving transformation for Scrooge. The following morning, Scrooge begins life anew as a changed man, finally celebrating Christmas with a softened and generous heart. With a cast of 11 adults and six youth actors, the talented BCP ensemble offers audiences all there is to love about community theater. “Justin Davis reprises his role as Ebenezer Scrooge, along with Alan Krueger as Fezziwig and Tristine Henderson as Belle,” producer Beth Crosby said. “Brian Dowling, an accomplished

We’re also excited to welcome youth actor Evie Sickbert as the Ghost of Christmas Past.” Crosby has been involved with the Broomfield Community Players since its inception in 2016. BCP offers three productions per year: a spring performance; a late summer/early fall show, and a holiday event, she explained. “’A Christmas Carol’ is a familyfriendly production,” Crosby said. “It’s a great way to introduce families and children to live theater.” When asked what she enjoys most about live theater, Crosby replied, “I think it brings people together in a way we’ve lost touch with. There’s something about the collective experience, taking a story journey together is so valuable and it builds unity.” While this is the third time BCP has presented ‘A Christmas Carol’ to the community, each performance offers something The BCP 2023 cast of ‘A Christmas Carol’ poses for a playful different, group picture. Warm Your Soul Delights
M
By Lisa Payne
y mom has a Christmas tradition where every year she gives the grandchildren a special ornament to hang on the tree. The ornaments have accumulated, and special memories surround each one. The kids keep them in their own special box to open up year after year. And when we put them away they always know which
ones are theirs, which makes clean-up a breeze. I even have a huge box of my own ornaments she and my grandma have given me over the years too! Stories adorn our tree. Thank you, mom. We love traditions in this house. Another one we love is our good friend and neighbor Emily Hastings makes the kids hot chocolate and a special braided bread
when the kids are busy outside sledding and building snow forts. My son Rowdy is already talking about snow days so he can go over there and eat the bread dipped in hot chocolate (a tradition my husband also grew up with!) This year we will incorporate this bread and hot chocolate tradition after hanging ornaments on the tree. Thank you mom and Emily for the inspiration this month, and for providing our family with treasured memories.
Homemade Hot Chocolate Batch Powder Form: Ingredients • 2 cups powdered sugar • 1 cup dutch-processed cocoa powder • 2 ½ cups powdered milk • 2 tsp. cornstarch • 1 tsp. kosher salt In large mixing bowl, combine all of the ingredients with a whisk and store in an airtight container for up to six months. To make, mix together one cup of hot milk or water with ¼ cup hot chocolate mix. Stir well to combine. Top with marshmallows and enjoy!
Fresh Hot Chocolate (serves 4): • 6 cups whole milk • 16 oz. high quality semisweet chocolate, chopped • 8 tsp. packed brown sugar • 2 tsp. vanilla Heat the milk to steaming. Add the chopped chocolate, brown sugar, and vanilla and stir on low until melted. Pour into mugs and top with fresh whipped cream. Yum!
Emily’s Braided Christmas Bread
Makes 2 loaves. In mixer with dough hook attached, dissolve 2 Tbsp. yeast in 3 ¼ cups warm milk. Add and mix together: • 3 Tbsp. melted butter • 2 tsp. salt • 2 Tbsp. sugar • 5 beaten eggs

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | December 2023
Mix in about 9 cups of flour, one cup at a time. Knead/mix for 10 minutes. Cover and let rise until doubled. Divide dough into 6 pieces, 3 for each braided loaf. Roll into long strips. Twist and braid 3 together and form into a circle, connecting the ends, trying to hide the seams. Place onto a greased cookie sheet. Brush with 1 egg mixed with 1 Tbsp. water. Cover and rise until doubled. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until golden brown. Delicious dipped in hot chocolate! Lisa Payne writes about food, home, and family. Whether you’re hosting a holiday get-together or making a side dish, make sure you don’t leave your cooking unattended. Keep flammable items like potholders and towels away from stove burners. 22. Although little helpers are great to have in the kitchen, children should stay at least three feet away from the stove. Keep hazardous items like knives, cords, and hot food and liquids out of reach. 33. Should a fire ignite, do not pour water on it. Place a lid over the pan to smother the fire and turn off the stovetop. Baking soda can also be helpful in extinguishing small grease fires. If the fire is in the oven, keep the oven door closed and turn it off if you can safely do so. Holiday decorations are another common fire starter. Deck your halls safely by: 44. Checking your holiday light cords to make sure they aren’t frayed or broken. Additionally, ensure that there are only three stands plugged into each extension cord. Here are some tips to keep in mind when buying gifts for kids: 77. One common choking hazard that may be surprising is deflated balloons – keep away from children under age eight. 88. If you are buying a child a bike, scooter, or other riding toy, make sure to also provide them with proper safety gear. Helmets in particular can help

prevent serious injuries. Other common holiday related injuries we see are cuts and injuries from low-height falls. 99. This time of year, we handle all sorts of sharp objects. Around 13% of holiday injuries are cuts. Whether you’re opening gifts, slicing turkey or roast, or trimming trees, be sure to take your time, keep your other hand away from the area you are cutting, and cut with the blade facing away from your body. 10. Tripping on toys, cords, and decorations 10 is another common injury we see in the ER, particularly in adults age 65 and older (one in four falling each year). Wear shoes with traction, watch your step, and use extra caution when you’re carrying something that makes it hard to see where you’re going.
