Our People
Our Broomfield Magazine is successful because of its people. We are successful due to the support of our loyal advertisers, our dedicated readers, and our critical community partners. But every day, I am most thankful for the contributions of the amazing Our Broomfield staff.
Our staff includes the immediate members of my family (Pat, Megan, and Allison) and a few other family members (Dad, Andrea, and Dylan) who are always at-the-ready to help whenever needed. Our staff includes a talented team of writers, some of whom I have worked with for decades, including my longtime colleague Kristen Beckman, my dear friends Missy Ruzicka and Lisa Payne, and Broomfield treasure Bette Erickson. And our staff includes my friend Tammy Degenhart, advertising consultant #1 in the entire city and a true community builder and caring connector.
But three years ago, when this magazine was just an idea, the staff included myself and just two former colleagues from another venture who were willing to take the leap and start this business by my side – in the middle of a pandemic no less!
I often receive compliments from happy clients who have had the pleasure of working with these two critical team members. Our Sales Coordinator Jason De La Cruz carefully handles each and every advertisement, in each and every issue, making sure that artwork is approved and in order in a timely fashion. He holds the business history of the Broomfield magazine in his brain and keeps the details assembled perfectly.
The creative, beautiful, and imaginative designs on these pages - in the articles, on the covers, and in the ads are thanks to the magic of Art Director Matt Clark. Matt has been involved with the Broomfield magazine for more than two decades. He works tirelessly to bring professional design and unique marketing approaches to each page and each client. He is a true talent. A few months ago, I took the call from him that you never want to receive as the boss. Matt was stepping down due to another opportunity. He gave me very generous notice and offered to help in the transition in any way he could.
After I collected myself, I started thinking about who I knew. I have had the good fortune to work with more than one great designer in my career. And the great ones are to be held close! So I called my old friend and colleague Stacey Horne and asked if she would join the team. She eagerly said yes and this is her first issue as our new Art Director. Matt of course, kept his word, patiently coaching all of us through the transition.
So, I wanted to take this time to acknowledge EVERYONE who is so critical to this publication, and I also wanted to welcome Stacey, but mostly, I wanted to thank Matt. So much of what this magazine is today, is rooted in his creation. Matt, I am honored to have worked with you through the years and wish you nothing but happiness and success! And I am hoping I might be able to convince you to pop back in for a special project now and then. Hopefully the flattery helps …
Thanks for reading and Happy New Year!

What Brings LIGHT Into Your World?
By Lisa PayneIt is literally called Nice News (www.nicenews.com), and you can wake up to positive news in your inbox each morning.
Who wants to hear about nice news this year? News that talks about dogs rescuing owners and how to be happy doing nothing and learning how to make your own vase or write a poem? You can have this! It is literally called Nice News (www.nicenews.com), and you can wake up to positive news in your inbox each morning. It has been such a breath of fresh air for me and I can’t wait for you to try it. It is a very light way to start your day.
Across the top of the website you can read by category such as acts of kindness, animals, culture, environment, everyday heroes, health and wellness, innovation, and science. You will never see anything negative or polarizing or political. Just words that make you feel good.
I’ve been feeling so good from my new morning routine that I wanted to carry the light feeling to other areas of my life. At the beginning of each year, I like to pick a word that will guide my actions for the next 12 months. This year I picked the word light. I want to feel the opposite of what the world has been feeling through traditional heavy news. I want to make decisions based on more joy and fun. I want the words that come out of my mouth to make others feel happy. I also want to make sure that I don’t expect anyone else to make me happy. That is a job I am fully capable of.
Wow. Okay. These are big goals but they feel so light. Huge like a hot air balloon but light as the air inside. I will have to put a sticky note on my bathroom mirror so I can be reminded of these goals every day. Will my words bring a smile to others? That already feels light. Am I relieving others of the burden to make me happy? That also feels light for everyone in my life. And am I living like today could be my last day? Heck yeah! That will feel incredibly light as I make more choices from a place of peace and joy. Should I let the kids stay up a few extra minutes to snuggle by the fire? Umm, definitely. Clean the kitchen or watch the movie? Dishes can wait. Finish the
last piece of pie? Always. Oh this is going to be my lightest year ever (unless I keep eating the last piece of pie!).
What is your word going to be this year? The process of finding your word can be very simple. I like to sit alone in a quiet room with my eyes closed and just breathe. I will think about what is important to me and ask for my word to come to me. Your word will come I promise. It may be while brushing your teeth or picking up dog poop later that day, but it will be there. Just pay attention and be open to the unexpected.
Wishing you a New Year filled with a lightness that carries you further than you ever imagined.

CCOB Celebrates SERVING THE COMMUNITY IN 2022
By Jennifer Hoffman - Broomfield City and County ManagerAs 2022 comes to an end and we look toward embracing and moving into 2023, the City and County of Broomfield (CCOB) City Council and our respective teams are hard at work for our residents.
From continuous improvements which enhance citywide public health and safety, to expanding the extensive trail system and means of transportation in Broomfield, providing the space for community members to express themselves artistically, and working toward building a financially sustainable future, 2022 has been another year of implementing a strategic approach to embrace the future while honoring our past.
Among the many accomplishments in 2022 were a number of new programs implemented by public safety designed to engage and educate our residents. This includes starting the Her Own Hero program, a free self-defense course for women in the community, partnering with the Colorado Auto Theft Protection Authority to give tools for residents to prevent auto theft, and raising money for the Colorado Breast Cancer Awareness Fund by selling pink Broomfield Police Department patches.
Public Health expanded Broomfield’s response to communicable disease outbreaks by partnering with nonprofits, schools, businesses, and faith organizations. The improved response covers not only COVID-19 but also RSV, monkeypox (MPOX), and the flu. In addition, the Broomfield Opioids Response Plan was approved, which will provide $201,000 to implement new strategies to address the opioid crisis and continue efforts by the Communities That Care Coalition and Youth for Youth. In fact, our Youth for Youth advisory group won the 2022 Heart of Broomfield Youth Award for their work in youth substance use prevention!
The mobility and pedestrian access and movement efforts continued in 2022. Not only has the preliminary design of the Airport Creek underpass and trail been completed—a collaboration with capital improvement projects and open space and trails— but Broomfield was awarded a $4,050,000 grant to help pay for construction. Beyond this, a number of other multimodal projects designed at offering accessible transportation for all Broomfield residents are in the works across Broomfield.
Sustainability has been working toward building a greener future for Broomfield. CCOB partnered with Solar United Neighbors to create the Broomfield Solar Co-op; a way for residents to purchase solar panels for their homes and/or businesses. The Broomfield Municipal Code was updated to include requirements for electric vehicle infrastructure in new developments within Broomfield. Another sustainable push was made by CSU Extension, which opened the Broomfield Seed Library on Earth Day this year.
Creativity remains a focal point for the Broomfield community in 2022. inventHQ—Broomfield’s makerspace—had its busiest year ever, helping more than 8,000 community members bring their creative ideas to life. Seven new public art projects were installed between the Broomfield Library and Auditorium and the Broomfield Commons Open Space along the inaugural stretch of the ARTery, Broomfield’s first Creative Corridor.
Achievements in engagement from 2022 include expanding the accessibility of Broomfield’s Open Space, Parks, Recreation and Trails Refresh survey by offering the survey in five languages, a successful summer concert series with more than 3,200 people in attendance, and usability and accessibility improvements of websites including Broomfield.org. Diversity, Development, Equity, and Inclusion training for all CCOB staff was offered, including enhanced learning opportunities encouraging staff to increase their perspectives and gain deeper understanding regarding underrepresented residents and fellow team members.
As we recognize and celebrate the many accomplishments in 2022, we are honored to serve our residents and each other. 2023 will bring a heightened awareness and effort to secure a sustainable water supply while focusing on ensuring the ever increasing infrastructure demands are met.

Danse Etoile Ballet Presents The Wizard of Oz
By Kristen BeckmanDanse Etoile Ballet will perform a familiar favorite - The Wizard of Oz - on January 27-29 at the Broomfield Auditorium. The family-friendly ballet retells L. Frank Baum’s classic story chronicling the travels of Dorothy along with the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion as they follow the yellow brick road.
“The Wizard of OZ has that magical appeal of a young girl’s journey and lots of fun characters, and it can be adapted well in a dance form,” said Danse Etoile Ballet Director Marie-Jose Payannet. “Like with all the stories we are choosing, we will put a Danse Etoile stamp on it, which means we are not going to reproduce the movie or another production but will give the beloved story a new way to be seen.”
That will include a Wicked Witch who is completely different from what you would expect, promised Payannet.
“Along with the 13 company dancers, this year we are adding eight dancers from our younger classes to play the munchkins and the mice,” added Payannet. Dancers all audition and those chosen participate in extensive training and rehearsals.
“The show incorporates classical ballet but also contemporary moves and jazz,” said Payannet. “It is super fun, but also super technical. The acting is really important, too, in this type of story. The dancers are working hard to portray their characters well.”
The production will include musical contributions from two
Colorado composers, Bruce Klepper and Dave Heffner.
“The entire music choice is pretty eclectic, very lively, and different,” said Payannet. In addition, the production will feature the artwork of Colorado artist Sarah Winkler on backdrops and videos created by Christopher Darling.
Show times are Friday, January 27, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, January 28 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, January 29 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door or at https://bit.ly/3H1JU39.
Payannet grew up in Southern France where she studied ballet at the Conservatory of Classical Dance and Music in Avignon. She moved to Colorado in 2000 and opened Danse Etoile in August 2004.
Danse Etoile is dedicated to producing quality artistic performances, programs, and instruction for dancers of different backgrounds, levels of training, and talent. Its mission is about building self-esteem through hard work, learning self-discipline, responsibility, and commitment; and the value of working as part of a larger
community.
“Danse Etoile Ballet’s reputation has grown over the years as we offer three different types of performances every season, all of which are very affordable for families,” said Payannet. “Every show is unique and has a very original flavor.”
After The Wizard of Oz, the company will begin work on the story of The Brontë Sisters, which it will perform in June.

By Lisa PayneDid you know that there are foods that actually help release dopamine in our systems?
I’m not kidding and it makes me so happy just to think about! If you wake up feeling kind of blah, have a cup of coffee, some eggs and sliced apples. Had a hard morning at work and want to quit your job by noon? Have yourself a piece of avocado toast, a handful of nuts like almonds or walnuts, and top it off with a cup of green tea. And if by dinner you are ready to trade in your kids, have a nice piece of salmon, some steamed spinach, and bananas foster for dessert. Sounds a tad healthy for me. But even if you incorporate some of
Egg Roll in a Bowl
these foods into your day you will be better off than where you started. Here is a recipe I love to jump start a New Year of happy eating! (adapted from 40aprons)
Instructions:
Heat sesame oil in a large skillet and place over medium heat. Add white parts of green onions, diced red onion, and garlic and saute, stirring frequently, until the red onion begins to soften, about 5 minutes.
Add ground pork, grated ginger, water chestnuts (Skip for keto), and 1 tablespoon sriracha hot sauce or chili-garlic sauce and cook until pork is browned, broken up, and cooked through, about 7-10 minutes.
Add coleslaw mix, raw sauerkraut, kale, coconut aminos or soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, white pepper, and salt, to taste, and stir until well combined. Cook, stirring regularly, until cabbage is tender, about 5 minutes.
Meanwhile, in a small bowl whisk together 1/4 cup mayonnaise and 1-2 tablespoons of hot sauce. Add a pinch of salt, to taste. To drizzle, place creamy chili sauce in a small plastic sandwich bag.
To plate: spoon a hearty helping of the pork-cabbage mixture in a serving bowl. Snip off the corner of the sandwich bag with the creamy chili sauce and drizzle over egg roll in a bowl recipe mixture. Garnish with green parts of the green onions and black sesame seeds.
You can also add a piece of grilled salmon to the top of your bowl and omit the ground pork. For dessert simply sauté peeled, diced apples in a little butter, brown sugar and cinnamon. In this meal you benefit from these dopamine releasing foods: raw sauerkraut, leafy greens, salmon, apples, avocado, sesame.

Trivia Challenge Seeks
‘Smartest Brains in Broomfield’
By Kristen Beckmanit’s time again for Broomfielders to test their trivia talents at the 6th Annual Broomfield Brain Trust Trivia Challenge. The event is scheduled to take place from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, February 24, at the Chateaux at Fox Meadows, 13600 Xavier Lane.
Thirty teams of four, five, or six contestants can enter the challenge for $300 per team. Pizza, salad, drinks, and dessert are provided for participants and included in each team’s entry fee.
The trivia contest includes eight categories consisting of eight questions each. Questions are projected onto a screen, and participants fill out a form with their answers, which contest monitors tally after each round. Questions are developed by the club’s Quiz Mistress, Jan Stokes, with help from a few
club members and kept secret until they are presented at the event.
Since the event was launched seven years ago, participation has grown each year, starting with 15 teams during its first year and nearly doubling that number as of 2020. Most teams return to participate year after year.
After taking 2021 off due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event returned in 2022 to test Broomfielders on their
knowledge of a wide variety of topics. Bruce Erley of Creative Strategies Group emceed the event, which included questions on topics ranging from famous movie lines, equine luminaries, textiles and fabrics, and under the sea.
Last year’s challenge drew more than 120 competitors and volunteers, including 17 teams of six competitors competing for the title of “Smartest Brains in Broomfield” and the coveted electronic Broomfield Brain Trust trophy.
Part of the evening’s fun is the creative team names. Last year’s team monikers included Honorable Mention, made up of the Broomfield mayor, mayor protem and four council members. Other team names were Clueless, The Brainy Bunch, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Gray Matters, and Emerald Dragons. Teams were sponsored by local businesses, charities, and individuals.
After all questions were answered last year, there was a tie between the Emerald Dragons, representing Emerald Elementary School, and the Catfished team sponsored by Broomfield FISH. This prompted a single-question run-off that boosted the Catfished team to victory.
The Rotary Club of Broomfield Crossing sponsors and staffs the event each year and the proceeds from the team entry donations benefit charities such as End Polio Now; Broomfield FISH; Emerald Elementary School; FRIENDS of Broomfield; Stargate School; and the Broomfield Community Foundation. Proceeds raised during the event typically total up to $5,000, said Broomfield Brain Trust Boss Jeff Taylor.
“The Trivia Challenge is a great chance for people to get out at a time of year when not much else is happening, enjoy terrific food, and have fun building camaraderie with their teammates while donating to local and global charities,” said Taylor.
Contact Taylor at taylorx3@comcast.net or 970-331-2375 to reserve your table now. Earliest reservations get best seating, and there is a space limitation of 30 tables.
Bal Swan Helps Local Families Grow Through Inclusive Early Childhood Programs
Mark Your Calendar for the Bal Swan Ball, February 25
By Missy RuzickaOur Future in Bloom!” is this year’s theme to Broomfield’s longest standing black tie event, The Bal Swan Ball.
It starts with a spark of thoughtfulness. As Broomfield’s first non-profit organization established in 1963, Bal Swan Children’s Center’s Board and Founders knew that Broomfield was a community that wanted to take care of its people, with a strong focus on preserving the dignity and self-worth of all Broomfield citizens. Mr. Bal Swan and Mr. Fred Spallone donated money and land so Bal Swan Children’s Center could be built, and there would be an intentional space in Broomfield for children of all abilities to learn and grow together.
Its legacy has grown through the decades, in a reciprocal spirit of love and commitment to the community. Here are just a few comments about the school from those directly touched by the magic of Bal Swan.
“Five years ago, our son started at this amazing school. We were broken, we were lost, we were scared, and we had no idea what to do. The staff scooped us up and held us. Everyday, we were reminded that our amazing kid has so many strengths and endless potential.”
Bal Swan Children’s Center knows what families need to grow in their care.
“You taught [my children] love and kindness and patience and self-control. You oozed this out from your soul because your soul is so kind and so patient and so full of love. You gave me grace and forgiveness and encouragement. You told me I was doing a great job when I was sure I was scarring my children for life. And it’s not just me.
You call every child and every parent who walks through that door, ‘friend.’ And you mean it. When I think about all of the families you have touched, I marvel at how much love you have spread into this world. I marvel at how Bal Swan has changed lives and given parents so much peace and a chance to catch their breath.”
At Bal Swan, supporting children, their families, and caregivers is like spreading sunshine and love on the gardens of spring.
“My oldest son experienced a variety of special needs challenges in his early years. In preschool he was listed by the State of Colorado as an ‘At Risk Child’ and as a result he attended Bal Swan for a year prior to entering Kindergarten. At the time, we were very discouraged as parents, but the year at Bal Swan became the turning point of beginning to have hope based on the resources and support that was provided. While it has continued to be a journey with my son to work through his challenges, today he is a well-adjusted young man working towards a college degree. And his time at Bal Swan was the starting point of positive development.”
All visitors to Bal Swan Children’s Center feel the magic of this school. Children feel intuitively loved and valued and the parents are supported in their parenting.
Please support us in creating many more life changing family stories by attending “Our Future In Bloom,” Saturday, February 25, 2023, at the Omni Interlocken Hotel and Resort for a evening of dinner, entertainment, and dancing, and learn more about how Bal Swan is an integral part of the Broomfield community.

As things slowly get back to the new normal, our health partners over at Avista Adventist Hospital want to help you get back into the swing of things by taking care of yourself and making sure you find the perfect primary care doctor.
One of the most important things when looking for a primary doctor is comfortability. Dr. Leif Redal with Centura Health says it is important that you feel 100% comfortable with your primary care doctor and that you feel like they are really listening to what you have to say. The ideal doctor is easy to talk to and explains things so you can understand the importance of the topic and therefore make you feel like you’re working as a team. It is the strong relationships primary care doctors build with their patients over years that doctors find most rewarding and reflective of why they went into family medicine in the first place.
Finding a Primary Care Doc Who Will be Your Partner in Health
Vital tests like mammograms and colonoscopies are some of the diagnostics that people put off during the craziness of 2020, and even now that restrictions have been lifted, many people still haven’t scheduled those important preventive tests. The American Cancer Society says 90% of patients survive colon cancer when found and treated early, and the best way to do that is by scheduling your colonoscopy when your primary doctor says it is time. Mammograms are still the best tool for finding breast cancer even before a tumor is big enough to feel or cause symptoms. Prevention is better than a cure, so take some time today to schedule your overdue preventive tests.
If you, like many others, have simply been avoiding your basic annual physical the last few years, it’s time to schedule those appointments too. Once you have a primary care doctor that you feel comfortable with,
make the appointment. There is so much a doctor can learn about you and your health just by listening to you at the consult, and learning about your family history. These histories can lead us to the path of healthier futures. For those with medical issues such as diabetes, thyroid, and high blood pressure, it is imperative to stay in contact with your doctor and up to date with lab tests so that as a team you and your doctor can make the best medical decisions for treatment.
The staff at Avista Adventist Hospital and all their surrounding clinics are here to help guide you through the maze of medical progress, which includes preventive health screenings, immunizations, and even getting back up on your feet after a seasonal cold. Your primary care physician is here to help, basing recommendations on what is best for you and your family, for we are all in this together.
