notes from the SUPERVISOR’S OFFICE 5209 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 356-1980 • www.townofguilderland.org

Guilderland, NY- Well, the summer season is now upon us. We have had some hot and humid days and some pretty stormy ones as well, but we have also had a fair portion of long days with sunshine, warm temperatures, and low humidity. Enough to offset this past winter? That’s something for each of us to decide for ourselves, but we surely have enjoyed some days recently that remind us how enjoyable Guilderland weather can be! I’d like to begin this month by thanking everyone involved in the response to the fire at the Tawasentha Park pool house on June 21. Our volunteer fire departments coordinated for a quick knockdown of the fire, and our Parks Department staff immediately began working on the major tasks needed to restore services and to get the park re-opened. I am really pleased to say that we have been able to restore public access to the pool, using portable trailers for rest room and changing room facilities, and setting up temporary shower stations. I would also like to express our sincere gratitude to our community partners at the Guilderland YMCA and Pinehaven Country Club for providing access to their facilities so that our summer camp programs were able to start on time, and to include swimming lessons, as has always been the case. I am also pleased to report that the pool house, like all of our other Town facilities, was covered by appropriate insurance, and will be replaced by a new facility of the same size as the old pool house. We are working with our insurance carrier to coordinate and schedule this project, and are hopeful that construction can commence in the fall. I want to assure our residents that the Town Pool will continue to serve as a major recreational resource for both summer campers and residents alike in the future. Guilderland’s park system consists, of course, of resources that extend well beyond swimming. Tawasentha Park itself offers 5 miles of hiking trails, picnicking, a playground, the lovely Lawlor Memorial Gardens, newly-resurfaced tennis courts, basketball, and the Guilderland performing arts Center, which will continue its Thursday night concert series program this summer. We also offer sports-themed parks, including DiCaprio, Keenholts, and Nott Road parks, and neighborhood-scale facilities such as Abele, Fort Hunter, McKownville Reservoir, and Volunteer Firemen’s Park for

everyone’s enjoyment. Visit our Town website at www. townofguilderland.org or call the Parks Office at 456-3150 for more information or with questions. Work has wrapped up on the sidewalk project in Guilderland Center. The new sidewalks give the hamlet more of the feel of a consolidated neighborhood, and also provide a visual cue that helps with traffic calming in the project area. We see people using them regularly, which is a pretty good indicator that residents like the idea. Sidewalk construction on the north side of Western Avenue between Route 155 and the Albany city line will continue through the fall. This project will connect all the pieces of a currently-fragmented network, and will significantly increase walkability and pedestrian safety along Guilderland’s busiest thoroughfare. Crews from our Highway Department will, as they always do, circulate through our neighborhoods this summer picking up bagged grass clippings and bundles of brush. Please be considerate of the work these folks are doing by not leaving grass clippings at the curb (vacuum trucks are out only during leaf season), and by bundling brush so that it can be picked up and set in our collection trucks. Our work crews will be very focused on worker and resident safety, and your cooperation will be appreciated. This month marks the sixth anniversary of the appearance of this column in Our Towne Guilderland. I would like to thank publisher Lowell Knapp for providing this space as a way for the Guilderland Town Supervisor to informally update Town residents on events and activities in Guilderland, Please feel free to contact either Our Towne or my office at Town Hall (356-1980, extension 1040) if you have suggestions for improvement. Best wishes for a safe and enjoyable summer season!

Guilderland, NY- Consumers have many choices as they look for good dental care, from large corporate practices to your small independent neighborhood dentist. In a recent article published in the Times Union newspaper, a well known dental management company was fined $450,000 for over 300 complaints concerning “quality of care, billing practices, misleading advertising, upselling of medical services and products consumers felt were unnecessary, and unclear or incomplete terms for the financing of dental care”, according to a news release. Our dental practice is built upon patient service. We can assure you that we do not double book appointments. You are always given all the time necessary for your individual treatment whether by me or my hygienist. We use only quality materials and highly regarded reputable American labs for all your restorative work ( crowns, dentures, implants, etc..). After each patient’s comprehensive exam and before any treatment I consult with each patient and clearly explain all the dental findings and treatment recommendations. Patients are encouraged to ask questions and be actively involved in their treatment. No patient is pressed for any unnecessary services or products. We are patient driven not profit driven. Where you and your family choose to go for dental care makes a difference - - potentially a big difference in terms of your health, satisfaction, comfort, and appearance.

ROADTRIP: Eating Healthy Away From Home By: Dr. Kim Leis-Keeling Guilderland, NY - A few years ago my husband decided it would be a good idea to take our son on a good ole’ fashioned hunting trip to the middle of “nowhere” Arkansas. Our son was 4 at the time and I had done a pretty good job of keeping his food intake to “mommy approved” cuisine. I try to stick to “real” food and buy organic as often as I can. So you can imagine the panic I had trying to predict what my husband was planning to feed this child for 4 days. Before they left I remember subtly begging my husband “Can you at least eat at Subway and not stop at McDonald’s for every meal?” A few days later, I met up with them and after I gave my son a big hug the first question I asked was “What did you eat today?” With his big blue eyes he looked up at me all smiling and said “I had Fruit Loops for breakfast, Fruit Loops for lunch and Fruit Loops for dinner.” I just had to laugh. It is not exactly the colorful variety of food we are supposed to get each day but he survived. So is it possible to eat nutritious foods while taking a summer road trip, camping or while on vacation. Yes! Absolutely! I wanted to put together a list of simple snack ideas so your healthy eating doesn’t go out the window on a vacation. So at some point we have all stopped at a convenience store looking for something to drink or eat while on the road. Look for the healthy options first. Start again with the basics of the list above. Most convenience stores have all these items hidden between the potato chips and the candy barsJ. For beverages, water and milk will be your most nutritious options. Avoid foods that only contain sugar such as fruit juice or bags of sugar candy. If you give your child a bag of gummy worms on a road trip, you are asking for trouble. As a last resort, you can always buy a loaf of bread and a jar of peanut butter for quick and inexpensive sandwiches that will

HERE ARE SOME SIMPLE IDEAS TO CONSIDER TO BE PREPARED FOR YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP: 1.

Easy to eat fruit: bananas, apples, grapes, peeled oranges.

2.

Cut up vegetables: carrots, celery, cherry tomatoes, zucchini, cucumber slices, radishes and broccoli.

3.

Dried fruits, nuts and trail mixes.

4.

Yogurt or apple sauce that comes in the squeeze packets.

5.

Make sandwiches and put them in individual containers or bags.

6.

String cheese, cubed or sliced cheese.

7.

Protein bars.

8.

Small bite sizes crackers or pretzels. Avoid larger crackers and chips that can crumble all over your car.

feed the family. What about navigating the restaurant? First, survey your options. My husband has this theory that there is a Subway within a mile of almost every McDonald’s. We have taken many road trips and as much as I hate to admit that he is right, this is true most of the time. If you are looking for something quick, it would be the better of the two options. Most restaurants have salads. You just need to make the word “salad” come out your mouth when ordering instead of

“cheeseburger with fries.” That just takes a little will powerJ. I have included a recipe, provided by Kelly Pickering who is our Wellness Coach, for some homemade protein bars. These are delicious and packed full of nutrients. They are perfect for a summer trip, an athlete in training or anytime. If you have never heard of some of these ingredients, take this recipe to the health food store and they will help you find them.

NO-BAKE PROTEIN BARS Ingredients: 1 ½ Cups Organic Whole Oats ½ Cup Organic Unsulphured Shredded Coconut ½ Cup Organic Raw Unsalted Pumpkin Seeds ¼ Cup Organic Unhulled Raw Sesame Seeds ½ Cup Organic Dried Fruit (raisins, dates, cranberries, cherries, apricots, goji berries, etc.) I use ¼ cup tart cherries and ¼ cup goji berries. ¼ Cup Organic Raw Cacao Nibs ½ Cup Pure Maple Syrup (I only use between 1/8-1/4 cup) ½ Cup Organic Peanut Butter (or any nut butter). I use ¼ cup almond & ¼ cup peanut. 2-4 Scoops Organic Brown Rice Raw Vegan Protein Powder. I use 3 scoops. 2 TBSP Organic Ground Flax Seeds 2 TBSP Organic Chia Seeds 1 & ½ TSP Cinnamon 1 TSP Vanilla ½ (or a little less) warm water Mix all dry ingredients together. I find that the vanilla mixes in more thoroughly if I mix it in with the maple syrup first and then mix the maple syrup/vanilla with the nut butters and water before I add it to the dry ingredients. Once thoroughly mixed, press into an 8X8 inch casserole dish. The mixture will be sticky, so sometimes it helps to wet a large spoon with warm water to smooth out the top of the mixture. You can also cover with waxed paper and press mixture firmly into pan. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate till firm. Cut into 8 servings (or more). Keeps for about 2 weeks in the refrigerator, or wrap individually and freeze. Enjoy!!

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

2050 Western Ave, Suite 201, Guilderland, NY 12084 (518) 456-6611 • www.guilderlandchamber.com Guilderland, NY - As the summer begins, our fiscal year ends here at the chamber. That means we are embarking on yet another year of business events, networking, development, and challenges. It also means are wrapping up our previous years business. And, it also means that we are smack dab in the middle of certain campaigns, like our GuilderLocal campaign! There have been many changes in recent years at the Guilderland chamber, and as I look back at this past year at both our success and at some of our local businesses success, I see a year of milestones. This was the year in which we as a chamber, not only kicked off our GuilderLocal campaign, but we also kicked off our Health and wellness program designed to help our smaller businesses see the importance on putting an emphasis on their employee’s well-being. This was also the year that we truly focused on our members and community businesses and asked what they wanted, and now we are trying to implement those ideas. This was also the year in which we noticed that our community is looking for knowledge and education to be able to run their companies better and more efficiently, where in turn, we will start to offer better programming.

ZZZ '(17,67*8,/'(5/$1'1< FRP

But, this year was not just about us. It was about our businesses and our partners. This is also the year that Albany Country Club is celebrating their 125 years in business. Only a handful of country clubs around the nation can tote that accomplishment. The Appel Inn is also celebrating 250 years since the Tavern was first built. We saw the Pine bush Preserve get designated as a National Natural Landmark, and the very same day, celebrated Lord and Taylor coming back to the region. On the town end of things it was announced that long time Supervisor Runion will be retiring at the end of this year which means that someone new will be holding that post come January. Every year we see change, but we always keep striving and working for making our members and our businesses better at connecting with the community and with each other. As we dive into our new fiscal year and look back at our accomplishments, we know we will see many more milestones and changes and hope that our businesses continue to dive in with us. Happy Summer everyone! Be sure to check out our calendar for more business and community events coming up! www.guilderlandchamber.com Sincerely, Erika Gauthier, President Expires /15/15 12

PERSEVERANCE Guilderland, NY - I know that I have written about perseverance before, but it is really a significant portion of the foundation of great character so I return to it again. For those that at follow, you may also recall that I have previously written about my son Mete’s pursuit of the art of fly fishing. In that article I focused on the benefits of the age we live in n for learning. If you ou are motivated and have the perseverance thatt may be required, you can teach each yourself just about anything and be a part of the world community also learning and sharing on the Internet. Since that article about a year has passed. One weekend recently our family visited Trout Town USA, Roscoe NY. Since Mete began his investigations and practice of fly fishing, he has dreamed of going there to fish the renown Beaver Kill. We fished for two days at many different locations but he did not catch a trout. Some people around us were successful and there was a lot of action, but still he did not manage to hook one of these elusive fish. Here’s the best part: his attitude is still positive and his perseverance level is still high. We talked just a day or two after our trip about making the next trip there to try again.

Sometimes success gives positive reinforcement that practice, but sometimes leads to more pra it is the lack of success that leads to more practice and more perseverance. One year of persev learning, teaching oneself, lear practicing, preparing and pr persevering and not one p trout. Success isn’t really always the only outcome, many times the path to success and the journey are the most important. This is crucial for T character and learning. cha The journey of learning and stumbling and trying again and stumblin persevering sweetens the pot of Success will happen for Mete success. Succes because he wants it. Desire and perseverance lead to success, and Mete has been here before. He is a third degree blackbelt in Taekwondo, and achieving that goal has taught him the lessons necessary to succeed in anything he wants to do. All of my immediate family members are blackbelts and all of them will achieve anything they want because they have been down “perseverance street” many times and they know about and practice the great character that the study of martial arts promotes. Getting what you want out of life is easy when you practice the character you may need to achieve it while doing something fun!

Master Rice owns Guilderland Martial Arts and holds a 5th degree Black Belt in Taekwondo. Master Rice is also a Math teacher at Guilderland High School. Guilderland Martial Arts offers classes starting at age 4 as well as an afterschool program and summer camps. For more information please call 690-1269.

BOND PERFORMANCE UPDATE Guilderland, NY- In previous bond performance articles, we have discussed the two broad types of risk that impact the prices of bonds, interest rate risk and credit risk. We have consistently urged investors to “stay the course” with respect to their bond positions, assuming that bonds are a component of the target asset allocation within their Investment Policy Statement. Despite warnings throughout 2014 to avoid bonds due to the potential for rising interest rates, bond investors saw interest rates remain level or even drop during the year. This resulted in excellent total returns for various bond categories during 2014, as shown in the below table: Barclays US Aggregate Bond Index

+5.97%

Barclays US Corporate 1-5 Year Index

+2.08%

Barclays US Corporate 5-10 Year Index

+7.29%

Barclays US Treasury Inflation Protected Bond Index

+3.64%

S&P Municipal Bond New York Index

+8.60%

Bond yields have held increased ever-so-slightly steady throughout 2015, as shown by the below year-to-date total returns through 06/29/2015: Barclays US Aggregate Bond Index Barclays US Corporate 1-5 Year Index Barclays US Corporate 5-10 Year Index Barclays US Treasury Inflation Protected Bond Index S&P Municipal Bond New York Index

-0.14% +1.00% +0.43% +0.30% +0.41%

Bonds provide investors with the important feature of relatively low volatility (compared to riskier assets such as stocks and commodities), combined with predictable income streams. If and when bonds suffer another negative period, we urge you to consider why you hold bonds, and caution you against abandoning ship when the tides look rough. Bonds have historically provided an excellent diversifier to equity positions.

Healthy Diet and Eye Health Guilderland, NY - Many of my pa ents ask me about diet and how it relates to their eye health. I advise them that adding certain nutrients to their diet every day – either through foods or supplements has proven beneficial. Studies udies have shown a reversal of cataracts, AMD and d improvement of overall health by ea ng the right foods. A diet rich in green leafy vegetables and colorful fruits along with fish and a decrease in the amount of saturated fats will put you on the right path. However, ea ng the recommended servings a day may not be realis c or affordable so supplementa on may be necessary. For a healthy young individual or someone with a family history of eye disease a regular mul vitamin with zinc may be enough. Forr someone with age related macular degenera on, or early signs of AMD, a mul vitamin containing the AREDS formula on and addi onal supplementa on with lutein and zeaxanthin may be be er. •

Lutein & Zeaxanthin

EssenƟal FaƩy Acids

Lutein and zeaxanthin are important nutrients found in green leafy vegetables, as well as other foods, such as eggs. Many studies have shown that lutein and zeaxanthin reduce the risk of chronic eye diseases, including age-related macular degenera on and cataracts.

Fats are a necessary part of the human diet. They maintain the integrity of the nervous system, fuel cells and boost the immune system. Two omega-3 fa y acids have been shown to be important for proper visual development and re nal func on.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is an an oxidant found in fruits and vegetables. Scien fic evidence suggests vitamin C lowers the risk of developing cataracts, and when taken in combina on with other essen al nutrients, can slow the progression of age-related macular degenera on and visual acuity loss. •

Zinc

Zinc is an essen al trace mineral or ‘helper molecule.’ It plays a vital role in bringing vitamin A from the liver to the re na in order to produce melanin, a protec ve pigment in the eyes. Zinc is highly concentrated in the eye, mostly in the re na and choroid, the vascular ssue layer lying under the re na.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E in its most biologically ac ve form is a powerful an oxidant found in nuts, for fied cereals and sweet potatoes. It is thought to protect cells of the eyes from damage caused by unstable molecules called free radicals which break down healthy ssue. Dr. Chad A. ARE YOU SQUATTING ENOUGH? Next time you’re near a toddler, take a moment to observe how she moves. As soon as she finds something interesting, you’ll see her sit down into a squatted position to check it out. Squatting is one of the most basic human movements – so basic that every child knows how to do it! Squatting regularly provides a host of health benefits, including improved circulation and increased core strength. Squatting properly can offset the impact of sitting for extended periods of time. Unfortunately, as our lives become less physically intensive, squatting has become a lost skill for most people. Yes, most can sit down onto a chair and stand up from it, but can you perform a full-range-ofmotion deep squat, like that toddler you just saw doing the same?

I thought deep squatting was bad for your knees? Full-depth squatting with poor technique can be harmful for your knees as well as back, hips, and ankles. In order to access the benefits of squatting, you need to do it well, and often. Re-learning how to squat the way our bodies were built to can be difficult and might take some practice. Here are the basic instructions we give to our CrossFit ABC program participants: Extend your arms straight out in front of you and set your feet shoulder-width apart. Establish a proud posture with your head up and shoulders pulled back. Take a deep breath and hold it, squeezing the midsection to brace your core. Once braced, send your hips down and back toward your heels. As you lower your body, push your knees out over your pinky toes. This will enable better hip flexion and protect the knees. To achieve full hip range of motion, lower yourself until your hips pass just below the top of your knees, maintaining your weight in your heels throughout the entire movement.

How do I know if I’m doing it right? There are several classic faults that can occur when trying to squat properly. The first one is letting the knees come in; push them out! The second is letting the chest drop forward as you squat. Fight this by putting your hands higher in front of you, and looking slightly upward. If you find yourself coming forward onto your toes, pull your hips back and reestablish a solid base on your heels before continuing to move yourself lower. The best way to ensure that your squatting is up to snuff is to have an expert trainer help you out! We believe in the importance of squatting so much, that it’s the first movement we teach during our Aevitas Boot Camp (ABC) course. This beginner-friendly program is designed to teach you the basics of all of the foundational movements we use in our CrossFit training method, and set you up for a lifetime of health and fitness! ABC courses begin during the first week of every month, and registration is limited to the first eight people. For more information and to sign up for our next ABC course, visit www.crossfitaevitas.com, email us at info@crossfitaevitas.com or visit us at our facility in Charles Park just off of Rt. 155.

B IKING FOR BREAD Co-Director of Guilderland Food Pantry Sets Goal for XC Bike Ride. Guilderland, NY- “Riding a bike across the country wasn’t on my bucket list”, says Mark Hopper, Co-Director of the Guilderland Food Pantry, “but a friend encouraged me and once I found someone to join me, it was all systems go.” Dan Greene of Springville, NY, will join Mark on the adventure. They will be riding from Portland, Oregon to Springville this summer. “At 61 and 64 years old, we initially called this the this the “Two Old Men On a Bike Tour.” Recently though, Mark got the idea of shifting the emphasis towards assisting the GFP. As co-director with his wife Susan Hennessy, he thought about using the trip as a way to promote the work of the GFP by soliciting support as he rides. “Summer is our ‘off season’ for donations.” The ride is going to be three thousand miles so he’s hoping to get a dollar a mile for a total of $3,000.00. “That will cover our summer budget.” Every penny donated will go directly to the GFP. So, the new slogan became the “Bike for Bread Tour.” “At first this was just a ride for fun. Now, it has a sense of purpose. We can provide a lot of bread for a lot of people when neighbors help their neighbors.” They hope to average 60 miles a day over a two-month period. Built in are ten days for recovery and weather conditions. They will be riding Route 20 most of the way. “It’s America’s longest road and I grew up on it,” says Mark. Originally planning on taking Route 20 from coast to coast, the trip was “modified” to simply make it easier. “We opted for a shorter and more scenic route through Oregon and Washington but we will pick up Rte 20 in Boise ID.” Susan and Mark became Co-Directors of the Guilderland Food Pantry, housed in the Hamilton Union Presbyterian Church, in 2014. Along with a staff of committed volunteers they continue the work that began there 30 years ago. The pantry serves the hunger challenged in the community and helps families and individuals fill the food gap. “We provide about 500-600 meals every five weeks.” The GFP is one of thirty pantries in the Capital Region but one of only three that depends solely on contributions for their work. “We are one of Guilderland’s best kept secrets. We’re hoping to build on the solid foundation that we have in order to expand our service to our neighbors in need.” Food contributions of food can be dropped off weekdays between 9-11:30. Donations can be made out to the Guilderland Food Pantry, PO Box 7, Guilderland, NY 12008. If you would like to be a part of the “Bike for Bread” campaign, note your check “Bike for Bread.” Anyone interested in volunteering can reach the office at 930-1001 or contact them online at guilderlandfoodpantry.com.

FARNSWORTH MIDDLE SCHOOL RE-DESIGNATED AN ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS SCHOOL TO WATCH BY NYS DUCATION DEPARTMENT GUILDERLAND, NY—Farnsworth Middle School was re-designated as an Essential Elements School to Watch (EESTW) by the New York State Education Department and the Essential Elements Schools to Watch leadership team in March. On June 3, Farnsworth Middle School held an official ceremony, and the middle school was presented with a banner and certificate from the New York State Education Department. This prestigious designation recognizes the middle school’s continued commitment to enhancing school programs and practices. Farnsworth is one of only 27 schools in New York state currently designated as a School to Watch. Farnsworth Middle School was commended for developing a model educational program that is consistent with the Regents Policy Statement on Middle Level Education, the Essential Elements of a Standards-Focused Middle Level School, and the National Forum’s Schools to Watch criteria. The EESTW program recognizes schools

and accountability to bring about continuous improvement.

that demonstrate continuous improvement and excel in four domains: academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, social equity, and organizational structure. State leaders selected Farnsworth its academic excellence, its responsiveness to the needs and interests of young adolescents, and its commitment to helping all students achieve at high levels. In addition, Farnsworth— like all designated schools—was proven to show strong leadership, teachers who work together to improve curriculum and instruction, and a commitment to assessment

Selection as an EESTW starts with a written application. State teams visit schools that meet the necessary criteria to observe classrooms and interview administrators, teachers, students, and parents. State teams also look at school achievement data, suspension rates, quality of lessons, and student work to help inform their selection process. Selected schools are recognized for a three-year period, and at the end of three years must repeat the process in order to be re-designated. Fewer than 400 schools nationally currently have School to Watch designations. The schools vary in size from several hundred to several thousand students and represent urban, suburban, and rural communities. Farnsworth Middle School will be formally recognized as both a state and national School to Watch at the upcoming National Schools to Watch Conference in Washington, D.C.

BAILEY

Bailey is a little bitty extremely gentle one year old female kitty. She was found wandering the streets looking for food as her owner moved and left her behind. Her favorite things to do are to cuddle and have her belly rubbed. She also loves to be brushed while curled up in your lap. Bailey will start out a little timid at first. But within a few days of getting acquainted to your home she will want to be with you when you come home and sleep on your bed at night. When you come into the room she will run to greet you. The best home for her will be a quieter one. If there are other kitties they would need to be non-aggressive gentle cats like herself. She is spayed, up-to-date on her vaccines, and has tested negative for Fiv/Felv. If you would like to know more call Laurie at 518-461-0251 or brightsky@nycap.rr.com ROCKY

Rocky is an adorable active easygoing cuddly one year old small male cat who is looking for his forever home. He was found abandoned at an apartment complex. Sadly he had to spend the entire winter struggling to find food and to keep warm. Rocky’s heart is huge. He has a little endearing chirp (instead of a meow) to say hello and he will meet you at the door when you come home. He is the ultimate lap cat and likes to be included in all family activities. Uncovering Financial Secrets ut Guilderland, NY- We have received a lot of positive feedback about our columns in Our Towne. Many readers have told us that the issues discussed and the advice given has been eye-opening. The inspiration for the articles comes from our experiences representing people from all socio-economic backgrounds and education levels. However, the inspiration for this article came from a recent Dear Abby column that I read in the newspaper. A woman wrote to Abby and asked for advice about what to do with her husband that would not share financial information with her. She explained that she was in a long term marriage and that although she managed the household expenses the Husband would not share financial information about bank accounts or any of their assets or debts. The Wife said that when she pressed her Husband for information hee became defensive. Obviously, this is not a good sign. The Wife did not know how to proceed. Abby’s advice? Go see a lawyer. While I do not disagree that the Wife may need to consult with a lawyer, there may be other steps she could take find out the information she wanted. Here are a few steps that can be taken to flush out financial information that your spouse has not shared with you: 1. Tax Returns – I am always amazed at the number of people that do not read or know what is on their tax returns (even though they are signed by the tax payer). Tax returns are a treasure chest of information. Tax returns will tell you if there exists interest bearing savings accounts, stocks, IRAs, 401(k)s, other retirement/investment accounts or business interests. A tax return should be carefully reviewed and all forms and schedules attached to it should be examined. If the tax return is prepared by an accountant, you should contact that person for a copy your return if you do not have one. If your accountant does not have a copy, then you can request a copy from the IRS or state tax agency. If you do not understand the information on the tax return, then you should seek the advice of an accountant. 2. Credit Reports – Although you cannot obtain your spouse’s credit report without his/her consent, you can certainly obtain your own. A credit report will show you what debts are associated with your name and how many credit inquiries have been made on your file. You can obtain a free copy of your credit report once per year by visiting the website www. annualcreditreport.com. 3. Bank Accounts – If it is a joint bank account, you are entitled to records. Account statements will show you how much money has been deposited and withdrawn. Statements also provide clues as to the existence of separate bank accounts. For example, if there are deposits/transfers to/from other bank accounts, that will show up on the statement. I have discovered the existence of “secret” bank accounts simply by examining joint bank account statements.
