2009 Summer Recreation Brochures Coming Soon! The 2009 Summer Recreation Brochures will be ready for mailing during the last week of March. Registration for camps will begin on April 1, 2009, and residents will be able to register on-line at www.guilderlandrec. com, by mail or by visiting the Parks & Recreation Office now located across from Tawasentha Park on Route 146, 181 Route 146. Office hours are Monday - Friday 9:00 - 4:30 pm. Residents will be able to view the brochure on-line at www.townofguilderland.org or at www.guilderlandrec.com in mid-March. Tawasentha Summer Adventure Day Camp will begin on Monday, June 29 and run for three 2-week sessions until August 7, 2009. Camp hours are 8:00 - 11:45 a.m. each day at Tawasentha Park. The Town of Guilderland will also be offering swimming lessons for youth, golf camps and over 100 sports and enrichment camps throughout the summer. CHAMBER FOCUS FOR SPRING IS HEALTH INSURANCE FOR SMALL BUSINESS The Guilderland Chamber of Commerce is having a “sale.” For small businesses, it could be one of the best deals they ever got. It is on membership dues so that they can get health insurance for themselves and their employees. “Many small business owners are paying on average $1,000 a month to health insurance companies for health insurance just for one person, “ says Chamber Executive Director Kathy Burbank. “Being part of a chamber allows us all as a group to get a discounted rate on health insurance, saving many business owners $600 a month on those premiums! Many small businesses do not know this, or do not know how much they could save!” The “community rate” given by health insurance carriers to chambers and trade associations is the same no matter of the group is 100 or 1,000,

but the cost of the association or chamber membership can vary depending on the organization. Why the “sale” on membership? The chamber has an open enrollment period in May for health insurance, where businesses and employees can “shop around” for better plans offered by a chamber. The problem is the state says sole proprietors have to wait 60 days from when they join a chamber and small businesses -30 days, until they can get the health insurance. Burbank says “We can’t lower the insurance rates, so it is one thing we can do to help businesses in the area who are in need of health insurance; we are waiving the 2 months cost of membership for sole proprietors and small businesses, so that it is not a deterrent to making the changes that they need. “

Although small businesses are the backbone of our economy, are flexible in tough economic times, and foster a sense of community, they are hit the hardest when it comes to providing health insurance for owners and their employees. “They become less competitive that way, and have to charge higher prices on goods if they want to retain employees by offering benefits; it’s a shame and it’s not fair, but I feel great when we save a sole proprietor $600 a month!” says Burbank. “It happened over the November and December open enrollment period several times, which prompted the idea for this special.” For more information on health insurance or other great things the chamber is doing for businesses visit our website at : www.guilderlandchamber.com.

The Secret to Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookies Why is that whenever you see a recipe with the finished cookies pictured and then try to duplicate those cookies they never come out “just right”? It’s like the fast food commercials that tempt you with a big juicy hamburger perfectly sitting on a fresh bun and when you actually purchase the burger, what you get is a shriveled piece of meat stuck between two flattened pieces of bun! Do you want your chocolate chip cookies to come out soft and chewy every single time? The secret to perfect chocolate chip cookies is really very simple! And you can make them with any chocolate chip recipe at your disposal. The problem with most chocolate chip cookie recipes is they have you drop a spoonful on a cookie sheet and bake them for 9 to 12 minutes until the tops are golden brown. That is too long! By the time the tops are golden brown, your bottoms are dark brown, or worse, burnt. After the cookies have baked this long, removing them from the oven in this overbaked condition and having them stand only causes them to harden up like jawbreakers. Instead of soft, chewy cookies that melt in your mouth, you end up with hard, crunchy cookies with burnt bottoms. Dropping larger amounts on the cookie sheet to make bigger cookies doesn’t work. It takes longer for the middle of the cookie to bake and you still end up with burnt bottoms and hard cookies. Instead of following the recipe instructions to bake 9 to 12 minutes, under bake your cookies by a couple of minutes. The first time you try this, you will have to play around with the time and the size of your cookie drops

to get the perfect chocolate chip cookie for your oven. But, as a general rule, after you put your cookie tray in your oven (always on the top rack), set your timer for 6 to 8 minutes. When you pull your cookies out, the entire top should NOT be golden brown. Instead, the peaks of the top of the cookie should just be turning brown. At this time, the entire bottom of your cookie is golden brown and the rest of cookie is the same color as the batter. Remove the cookie tray from the oven and let them stand for a minute or so since the cookies will be incredibly soft and will fall apart if you try to immediately remove them from the cookie sheet. After they have firmed up a bit, remove them from the cookie sheet to your cooling rack or a piece of wax paper. With this method, you are guaranteed to bake the perfect chocolate chip cookies and have people asking you what YOUR secret is! Basic Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe 2-1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup butter, softened 3/4 cup granulated sugar 3/4 cup packed brown sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 eggs 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate morsels 1 cup chopped nuts (optional) Combine flour, baking soda and salt in small bowl. Beat butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla in large mixer bowl. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Gradually beat in flour mixture. Stir in morsels and nuts. Drop by teaspoon onto ungreased baking sheets. Bake in preheated 375 degree F oven for 6 to 7 minutes or until peaks in top of cookie are starting to brown. Let stand for 2 minutes. Remove to wire racks or wax paper to cool completely.

Q. What year did your business start, and how and why did you get into the business?

A. I was born in Washington, DC and moved to Colonie with my family in the late 1950’s. My Father, Roland Bourgeois started a hearing aid business in the Albany area when hearing aids were described in three ways: behind the ear aids, body aids, or hearing aids in the bow of eyeglasses. I began work in that business in the sixties after a tour of duty with the United States Navy as a Navy Medic attached to an airwing of the United States Marine Corps and I have continued to devote my life to the care of the hearing impaired. Fortytwo years of experience makes it possible for me to help people hear as well as they possibly can. I have seen the technology improve greatly with the advent of digital instruments but I also remember a time when I was paid for hearing aids in gallons of raw milk!

A. Home care is still a major aspect of my business. I put a lot of miles on my vehicle every year, but the number of great friends and acquaintances that I have made through this business far outdistances the number of miles I have put on my car. When you fit hearing aids, it is important to have conversations with your clients so that you can see how they are hearing or if their own voice doesn’t sound right when they speak. I have been privileged to have many spirited conversations with my clients about politics and religion, and so many other interesting subjects. My clients enrich my life well beyond the paycheck.

Q. Are you known for anything special?

Q. Besides the hearing aid business, what other things have you done in your life?

A. In the early days, most of my work was done in the home. One of my clients didn’t have a lot of money but she did have a cow and I would leave her home with milk as partial payment for her hearing aids. I also remember one client who I could only see at the end of the day because she insisted I have a glass of homemade anisette and Italian cookies with her before I left her home. And then there was Dora, an elderly woman who lived on top of a mountain in Schoharie County. She didn’t

Q. Do you still see clients in their homes?

A. I am the former President of the Mohonasen music parents, an honorary Girl Scout, and former owner of the skate shop at Achilles Rink at Union College. I have always worked part-time in the medical field. I was one of the first of people in New York State to be licensed as an Emergency Medical Technician and I worked evenings for Mohawk Ambulance Service. In 1996 I returned to school on a part-time basis and achieved National Paramedic Certification and subsequently, graduated from Maria College at the age of 60 and I am now a Registered Nurse working part-time at St. Peter’s Hospital in their Hospice Unit providing care for the dying and their families. This is some of the most important work I have done in my life. I have recently also begun working part-time in the emergency department at St. Peter’s.

Q. Are other family members involved in the business? A. My wife Corlis does all of the “behind the scenes” work in the business and she is the unsung hero of this business. In addition to her love and support for my work with the hearing impaired, Corlis is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University at Albany. She is an accomplished writer and artist. This year she will publish a volume of her poetry and an anthology of people’s stories from all over the country entitled “When Mother Died.” Her artwork hangs in our office and in the summer she directs an internship program on a remote island off the coast of Maine for college students interested in pursuing a career in art. Q. What is your policy with regard to pricing and refunds? A. In the past few years, with the advent of digital hearing aids, prices have escalated. It is my opinion that hearing aids are overpriced and we do our best to provide the highest level of care at the lowest possible price and in most cases, apples for apples, our prices are the lowest in the area. I have been at this location since I opened, but I worked as an associate in Corning, NY for 4 years prior to opening my own office. Q. How and why did you get into the business? A. My sister was diagnosed with scoliosis at a young age and she regularly had chiropractic adjustments. The benefits that she gained from the adjustments at such a young age made a significant impression on me. I decided to become a chiropractor to help people achieve optimal health, naturally. Q. Do you have many regular customers? Is there anything specific that they are always coming in for? A. All of my patients are on corrective programs based on specific recommendations. All of the patients are coming in because they have weaknesses in the structure of their spine, which forces pressure on their spinal cord and spinal nerves. They come to my office to fix these weaknesses, which will relieve pressure on their nerves and allow the nervous system to work at 100%.

The piece talked about the increase in library card signup on a national basis and informed the audience how Los Angeles public libraries had 18 million visitors in 2008, two million more than the previous year. FMS PLACES 10 IN NATIONAL FUTURE CITY COMPETITION; WINS BEST COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM AWARD GUILDERLAND, NY—The Guilderland Central School District is pleased to announce that students from Farnsworth Middle School recently won the ninth-annual IEEE-USA Best Communications System Award at the National Engineers Week Future City Competition National Finals. In addition, the FMS team placed 10th out of 38 teams in the overall 2009 National Future City Competition. Farnsworth earned its trip to the nation’s capital by winning the New York (Albany) regional Future City competition last month. This is the fourth year in a row that students from FMS have taken home the top regional prize. The FMS team included studentpresenters Zubin Mukerjee, Abigail Schooner and Joseph Sipzner; extended team members Isaac Malsy, Matt Gu, Adam Janover, Michelle Xiong, Edmund Doyle, Jake Van Buren, David Lasselle, Laura Chevalier and Sid Varma; team advisors and FMS teachers Deborah Escobar and Tom McGreevy; and engineer-mentor Robert Sipzner, P.E. Their winning city, “Cibola,” is set in 2237 in Pando, Bolivia on the Madre de Dios River.

Farnsworth was recognized for the most “efficient and accurate communications system” at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill.

“They gave thorough consideration to the capabilities and limitations of the technologies, including a consideration of spectrum crowding and frequency collisions,” Mallini said after Monday’s judging. “This distinguished M tthem from the other teams. ““They were focused on learning, and ttheir presentation was very descriptive over several applications and features o of the system.” o

A hand-held “Personal Education Device,” or PED, is the featured element of Farnsworth’s communications system. The PED utilizes a contact lens to reconstruct important events into a video to help students learn. In addition, students can go on virtual field trips through holographic imaging. The holograms also allow youngsters to transport themselves virtually so they can communicate with others anywhere in the world. Wally Lee and Monica Mallini, both of Alexandria, Va., selected Farnsworth from among the 38 regional championship teams that competed at the finals.

The Future City Competition is T designed to promote technological d lliteracy and engineering to middle sschool students. Under the guidance of aan engineer and teacher, the children create their own vision of a future city, working first on computer and then constructing three-dimensional scale models. The students also have to write an essay about a predetermined challenge the city might face. This year’s theme was “to design systems to conserve and reuse our most precious resource,” water. The final piece of the contest is a presentation before a panel of judges. More than 1,100 schools and 30,000 students from across the United States competed during the 2008-09 season.

The biggest challenge is convincing someone to let me try a hearing aid on them so that they can see how much better they will hear. Often people come to me who have been fit poorly, the aid that they have been fit with amplifies too much sound and they just don’t like wearing them. My challenge is to convince them that 40 years has taught me a lot about how to fit a hearing aid and I am able to fit hearing aids so that they will want to wear them. Another challenge is getting the word out to people that it is always wise to get a second opinion before purchasing anything and we provide that second opinion consultation at no charge.

Q. What do you want the community to know about you? A. I want the community to know that I have their best interest at my heart and I live by the Golden Rule. Q. Where are your offices located? A. Around the Kitchen A great looking and functioning kitchen can add significant value to your home. Kitchen remodeling projects can come with significant costs, but there are a few low cost projects that almost any homeowner can handle on their own. • A fresh coat of paint can liven up any outdated kitchen. Paint can be used to resurface cabinets and redo walls. With a little prep work and the correct color choice, just about anyone can make their old kitchen look new. • If your cabinets look a little outdated, try upgrading to more modern looking cabinetry hardware. Accurate measuring and drilling will do the trick. Many fixtures can be purchased and installed without costing a great deal of time or money. • Sometimes an upgraded faucet can give the effect of a modern kitchen area, especially when combined with other low cost upgrades such as paint and cabinetry hardware. In the Bathroom • Again, a fresh coat of paint can do wonders to your bathroom. Since bathrooms are smaller and more private spaces, homeowners can afford to get a little creative with color choices. • Fixtures and accessories such as faucets, towel racks, showerheads, and shower curtains are often just enough to spice up your bathroom. Several manufactures have a variety of faucet and water flow products that can modernize the average bathroom. • Mirrors and lighting can do wonders for the forgotten bathroom. Often, large rectangular mirrors can be replaced by smaller ovalshaped or circular mirrors for a more dramatic effect. In some cases, one or more mirrors may need to be mounted. Combined with a simple upgrade in lighting, mirrors can add a touch of class to any bathroom. With a few tools and little financial investment, most homeowners have the know how to complete any of the above home improvement projects. If you are fearful of making mistakes, major home improvement stores offer how-to clinics that give homeowners step by step instructions for such projects. When projects outweigh the scope of your personal skills and expertise, it is advisable to contact an experienced contractor .
